I urge you to live your life each day as if it were your last. Say the loving caring things you should say, now. Don’t wait for special occasions or for the media to tell you when you should give gifts or show kindness. Everyday should be kindness day towards all living beings, human and non-human alike. I say live each day with a promise to make someone’s day a little brighter each day. This can be achieved by small gestures: opening a door; writing a note; a phone call; a hospital visit; a smile; or a hug. You know I’m a hugger. Several weeks ago, my life got sidetracked. It was not penciled in on my calendar, yet it happened. I suffered among other things a TIA, Transient Ischemic Attack, otherwise known as a "mini-stroke. I was lucky this time around. Though I can’t say I’m feeling 100%, I can say, I’m alive. While I was in the hospital I got the opportunity to educate some individuals on veganism and compassion for animals and I’m proud to say that three of those people were going to enter the path of veganism. Yeah! The doctors were impressed with my numbers and agreed that if I were not vegan…it could have gone a different way for me. Yes, even vegans get sick. I’m here, I’m grateful, but mostly I hope that you take my message to heart and live your days with enthusiasm, compassion and kindness and treat every living being, whether human or non-human, with dignity and respect. If we all stood by these ideals, the world would be such a different place. A home for all, lived in love and harmony. What a beautiful world this would be! Livegan, Nancy & Arwen

ASSISTANT EDITOR’S NOTE

Every time go outside for a walk, I see everything for the first time, again and again. Everything is amazing! Imagine if we lived our days like that! When my human gets home, I am so excited to see her and she is excited to see me as well. To me is like she has been gone for months. Imagine if when you arrived home your loved one reacted like that; or for that matter, you reacted like that when you got home to your friends and family. Livegan: -- Arwen. NM Vegan | 04

I love wine. I love the look of it, the smell, the taste, the conversations it brings to a dinner with friends. But I wasn’t always a wine drinker. I actually used to prefer spirits. While I’ve been into veganism for over 20 years, I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy a few years ago. And though I know that some spirits are gluten-free, lots of cocktails are not. So I started to drink wine. Just like my journey to becoming vegan, my palette and knowledge of wine evolved over the years. It didn’t happen overnight, but now it’s one of my greatest passions. On a trip to France, I learned that egg whites are frequently used in the winemaking process, making the end product unsuitable for vegans. From that day on, I continued my research into wine and realized that many people, including vegans, probably have no idea of exactly what goes into their wine. Once I learned that all wine wasn’t vegan, my dinner dates with my fiancé became more complex. I could go to a vegan or even a non-vegan restaurant any day and have no issues ordering food. But not wine. Most restaurants don’t know which of their wines are vegan. Often when I ask, they’ll respond by telling me they don’t know which wines are organic. Of course, when I explain that I’m asking if the wines are made with animal products, I rarely find that anyone knows the answer. It became very frustrating, but it helped me realize that this is a very new subject for most people, even those who work in the food and beverage industry. Typically I’ll use the website Barnivore for help figuring out which wines are vegan. I love it, but it’s not always convenient because you have to go through their database in hopes that they’ve listed one of the wines on the restaurant’s menu or the wine rack at the shop. As a vegan, I’ve learned how companies sneak so many things into our foods, especially stuff that contains animal products. It’s the same in winemaking. Normally when you visit a vineyard or attend a wine tasting, they’ll tell you all about which grapes they used, whether it’s oak or steel aged, and the history of their wine production. But they rarely tell you how they filtered it. Did they use animal products in their winemaking process? Did they use any for refining the wine? Did they put animal products in the soil they used to grow the grapes? They don’t usually answer questions like this. Many wineries leave us blinded during tours and tastings, so there are lots of vegans out there who are still unaware that animal products are often used in the winemaking process. My mission is to educate people by promoting vegan-friendly wines and doing everything else I can to help increase awareness. That’s why I started Vegan Wines. Veganism is something I strongly believe in. It is my life as well as my lifestyle. Veganism is also taking off around the world, with more people learning about the movement every day. Vegans and non-vegans alike love good wine. So my fiancé and I searched for the domain name - veganwines.com found it, purchased it for a few thousand dollars, and that's how the idea became a reality. It seems to be a relatively new concept, so I decided to begin my venture fast and in full force!

Veganwines.com will sell vegan wines through an online wine club to members, but there’s so much more that I hope will blossom from that. In time, I want to become the brand, the logo, and the name that people can trust. Our logo of the cow drinking wine signifies that I, Frances Gonzalez, went to that particular vineyard or winery to taste the wine, learn the history of it, question the staff, and make sure that the wines I sell through my wine club are truly vegan. I want to be the logo that restaurants stamp on their wine list next to those labels that vegans can drink with full confidence that they are 100% vegan-friendly. I am a foodie and a wine lover. I enjoy wine tasting and learning how every vineyard’s winemaking process is different. I love learning the history of how and why that vineyard is there. I love hearing the fascinating stories of the owners. And I’ve always loved to travel, so visiting the U.S. and other countries to explore different vineyards is an exciting part of my new business as well. Of course I love learning all about the tastes and qualities of wines, but traveling on behalf of Vegan Wines also allows me to learn about the many cultures within the world of winemaking and all over. And our wine club isn’t just for vegans. Vegan Wines is for anyone who cares about where their wine comes from. It’s for people who want to drink quality, organic wines made by environmentally conscious wineries. We’ll only offer our customers wines created from the best and purest ingredients, rather than those processed by using shortcuts like animal byproducts. The vegan movement is real, and though some people might consider it a fad, I’m all for the fad. If a fad is what leads more people to discover the truth about the foods they put into their bodies, then great! That knowledge has the potential to change their lives forever in such a positive and healthy way.

Vegan Wines is the official first vegan online wine club in the USA. Frances Gonzalez is a long time vegan, minimalist, and nature lover. Frances is an animal rescuer and is still active in saving dogs in Puerto Rico. She became a vegan for animals rights first then along the years learned about the health benefits. Frances discovered that not all wines are vegan during a trip to France. As a vegan and wine lover, she decided to research it more. That is how www.veganwines.com was found. Vegan Wines is not just about vegan wines. We select wines that are unprocessed as possible and good quality.

Did you know‌ Located in a collapsed lave tube, the Bandera Ice Cave’s temperature never rises above freezing. At the bottom of the 75 foot deep cave, the ice floor is 20 feet thick, believed to date back to 1100 B.C. Las Vegas was the largest city in New Mexico at the turn of the 20th century. It was established long before its Nevada counterpart. Blue Hole, an 81-foot deep natural artesian spring in Santa Rosa, is a favorite location for scuba divers. It's 4,600 feet above sea level, making the bottom an equivalent of nearly 100 feet of depth in the ocean.

In some isolated villages in New Mexico, such as Truchas, Chimayo', and Coyote in the north-central part of the state, some descendants of Spanish conquistadors still speak a form of 16th century Spanish used nowhere else in the world today.

My 4 year old daughter is getting to the age where she is starting to understand more and more why our family is vegan and which foods we eat and don’t eat. While this is a good thing, it also comes with some challenges. She now has a good idea of things that are vegan and things that aren’t and can list for me what we eat and what we don’t eat. She now asks me if certain foods are vegan that she is unsure of and knows which items have a vegan version and have a non-vegan version. I love that she is questioning things more and cares about what she is eating. She also now understands better many of the reasons we are vegan in the first place: Non-vegan foods hurt animals, non-vegan foods hurt our bodies, non-vegan foods hurt the earth. I can ask her why we are vegan and why we don’t eat certain things, and she can tell me. This makes me very proud and hopeful for the future. Some challenges that come along with it are how she handles situations when I am not around and how she interacts with other people who are not vegan. I often worry whether or not she will know what foods are vegan when she is at someone else’s house without me but happy that she is asking more and more when she isn’t sure. She will also be starting preschool soon and will need to be able to determine whether some foods are or aren’t on her own but I am confident in what I have taught her and in her ability to ask. It is also important to educate those who are caring for your child and I have made sure to always be clear with others about what my daughter eats and doesn’t eat. I am happy though that she is starting to have the skills to advocate for herself. When interacting with others, she is starting to question them about why they aren’t vegan and ask me why they aren’t as well. In both cases she is usually told that different people eat different things but I always make sure to also remind her of all of the reasons why we do eat the way that we do. As she gets older she can choose how outspoken she would like to be about her beliefs and views and who knows, she maybe even be one of our future animal rights activists!
