THE WTO'S IMPACT ON EDUCATION RATES WORLDWIDE
2
By: Jason Eappen, USA
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has played a significant role in shaping international trade policies and practices, which, in turn, have had both direct and indirect effects on education rates across the globe. While the primary mission of the WTO is to facilitate trade and economic cooperation among nations, its influence extends beyond trade, contributing to the improvement of education in several ways. Economic Growth and Increased Resources: One of the most direct ways the WTO has impacted education rates is through economic growth. By promoting free trade and reducing trade barriers, the WTO has facilitated economic expansion in many countries. As economies grow, governments often have increased resources to invest in education. Higher GDP and increased tax revenue can be allocated to improving educational infrastructure, providing better quality education, and increasing access to education for all. Access to Educational Resources: The WTO's role in trade has led to increased access to educational resources. International trade allows countries to import educational materials, books, technology, and expertise that can enhance the quality of education. It also provides opportunities for students to access scholarships and educational exchange programs, leading to a broader perspective and an improved educational experience. Reduction of Poverty and Inequality: The WTO's focus on trade liberalization can contribute to poverty reduction and a decrease in income inequality. As people's economic circumstances improve, they can afford to invest more in their children's education. Reduced poverty rates mean fewer children are forced to leave school to support their families, which ultimately leads to higher enrollment and completion rates.
3
Technology Transfer and Knowledge Exchange: International trade has facilitated technology transfer and knowledge exchange, which can significantly impact the education sector. Access to technology and educational tools can enhance the quality of education and make learning more engaging. The WTO's role in facilitating global knowledge sharing has supported the advancement of education systems worldwide. Increased Investment in Education: The competition and economic growth encouraged by the WTO can incentivize governments to prioritize education. Countries aiming to maintain a competitive edge in the global market often recognize the importance of a well-educated workforce. As a result, they allocate more resources to their education systems, leading to improved infrastructure, better-trained teachers, and expanded access to education. While the primary mission of the World Trade Organization is to promote global trade, its indirect impact on education rates worldwide should not be underestimated. The WTO's influence on economic growth, access to educational resources, poverty reduction, technology transfer, and increased investment in education has contributed to higher education rates in many countries. As nations continue to engage in international trade and cooperation, the potential for further improvements in education remains promising. However, it is essential to strike a balance between trade liberalization and protecting the interests of developing nations to ensure that the

EL IMPACTO DE LA OMC EN LAS TASAS DE EDUCACIÓN EN TODO EL MUNDO
4

YOUTH-LED INNOVATIONS: DRIVING 6 CLIMATE ACTION THROUGH SUSTAINABLE TRADE PRACTICES By: Moses Ekwere Nigeria
Climate change is an imminent global challenge that demands immediate attention (Smith & Johnson, 2022). Young people today are emerging as catalysts for climate action, driven by their unwavering commitment to a sustainable future (Adams et al., 2021). For instance, the global youth-led Climate Strikes movement, inspired by the likes of Greta Thunberg, showcases the power of young activists in influencing climate policy (Thunberg, 2018). The Role of Trade in Supporting Climate Goals The Paris Agreement’s ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (UNFCCC, 2015) underscores the importance of sustainable trade practices. Trade is an integral part of our interconnected world, with profound implications for climate change (UNEP, 2019). It is well-documented that international trade contributes significantly to global CO2 emissions (Peters et al., 2011). Embracing sustainability in trade is, therefore, paramount in achieving the emission reduction targets set by the Paris Agreement. Understanding Sustainable Trade Sustainable trade, at its core, embodies responsible sourcing, reduced carbon footprint in production and transportation, and adherence to ethical labor standards (Brown & Green, 2019). Noteworthy examples include companies like Interface, which have taken sustainability to heart by reimagining their manufacturing processes to minimize waste and emissions (Interface, 2020). The Paris Agreement and its Climate Goals The Paris Agreement outlines an ambitious vision to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius (UNFCCC, 2015). Sustainable trade practices align seamlessly with these goals by curbing carbon emissions. Research from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicates that transitioning to renewable energy sources in trade and transport has the potential to reduce global emissions by a substantial 70% by 2050 (IEA, 2020). Sustainable trade strategies actively contribute to emission reductions through energy-efficient practices, responsible resource management, and ecofriendly packaging (UNCTAD, 2020). A notable example is the commitment of companies like IKEA to become climate-positive enterprises by 2030, achieved through investments in renewable energy and sustainable sourcing (IKEA, 2021).
7
Youth-led Initiatives in Sustainable Trade Youth-led enterprises such as “EcoTech Solutions” in India have pioneered affordable, energy-efficient cooking stoves that combat emissions and enhance indoor air quality (EcoTech
Solutions,
2022).
In
regions
like
Africa,
young
entrepreneurs
have
spearheaded sustainable agriculture initiatives, exemplified by “GreenHarvest,” which leverages vertical farming to maximize yields while conserving water and land (GreenHarvest, 2021). Innovations in Sustainable Supply Chains Companies like Apple have embraced innovative supply chain strategies to reduce their carbon footprint. Their adoption of recycling robots to recover materials from old devices and integrate them into new products is a testament to this commitment (Apple, 2020). Nelly Cheboi of Techlit Africa upcycles old computers to open new worlds for young Kenyans, offering brighter futures through her nonprofit, TechLit Africa (Allie T. CNN, 2022). On innovations in sustainable supply chains, a recent study conducted by Accenture (2021) underscores that businesses embracing circular economy principles in their supply chains have slashed waste generation by an impressive average of 30%.
Youth Engagement in Fair Trade Movements Youth activists, exemplified by individuals like Leah Namugerwa from Uganda, have become staunch advocates for fair trade practices (Fair Trade International, 2020). According to a report by Fair Trade America (2022), sales of fair trade products have experienced a remarkable 24% growth in the past five years. Youth-led sustainable trade initiatives have ushered in significant reductions in carbon emissions, resource preservation, and biodiversity conservation (Smith & Brown, 2018). Research from The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2021) reveals that the adoption of circular economy principles within the fashion industry alone holds the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a substantial 50% by 2030. Beyond their environmental impact, these initiatives have emerged as engines of economic growth, generating jobs and fostering development in local communities (Jones et al., 2019). Reports from the World Bank (2020) illuminate how youth-led sustainable agriculture projects in developing countries have led to a remarkable 30% increase in farmers’ incomes while enhancing food security.

Policy and Institutional Support. Role of Governments and International Organizations Governments worldwide have initiated policies aimed at incentivizing sustainable trade practices (European Commission, 2022). International organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) have begun incorporating sustainability clauses into trade agreements (WTO, 2021). However, a plethora of funding opportunities exists to bolster youth-led climate initiatives, including grants from organizations like the Green Climate Fund (GCF) (Green Climate Fund, 2021). Ashoka, a global network of social entrepreneurs, extends financial support and mentorship programs to young innovators in the realm of sustainability (Ashoka, 2022). Potential for Scaling up Youth-led Sustainable Trade Initiatives The scalability of youth-led innovations is evident in the rapid expansion of sustainable

proliferation while offering plant-based meat alternatives (Beyond Meat, 2021). The scaling of initiatives like Beyond Meat holds immense promise for reducing emissions attributed to traditional livestock farming. Incorporating Youth Voices in Climate Policy The involvement of young people in policy formulation processes is pivotal for crafting effective and inclusive climate policies (UNDP, 2020). The Sunrise Movement, a youthled organization in the United States, stands as a shining example, advocating successfully for the Green New Deal, underlining the pivotal role of youth engagement in shaping policy (Sunrise Movement, 2022). Collaboration Between Youth and Established Trade Organizations Collaborative endeavors between youth-led initiatives and well-established trade organizations, exemplified by partnerships like that between the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and The Coca-Cola Company, are poised to play a pivotal role in reducing the carbon footprint of global supply chains (WWF, 2021). Such collaborations harness the experience

By: Priya Bhardwaj, Canada & India
“The future belongs to those who understand that doing well by doing good is not a contradiction, but a harmonious balance.” - Naveen Jain Ladies and gentlemen, I Priya Bhardwaj, am honored to stand before you as a representative of The Ariel Foundation International. Today, we embark on an expedition to explore the uncharted realms of sustainable trade—a voyage that holds the promise of not just economic prosperity but also a harmonious coexistence with our planet. In an era where the stark realities of climate change confront us, our conventional approach to trade beckons a profound transformation. The pursuit of profit at any cost has steered us down a treacherous course. It is high time we recalibrate our priorities and unlock the untapped potential of eco-friendly trade to secure a sustainable future for generations to come. Economies can thrive sustainably only if they tackle the pressing issues of environmental

challenges would exacerbate societal and health disparities, pushing millions into abject poverty. It would also diminish nations' resilience in the face of future crises. Embracing a Paradigm Shift The pursuit of sustainability in trade is not a choice but an imperative. Traditional notions of trade, solely driven by profit, are no longer viable. We must pivot towards an ethos of responsible commerce, where environmental and social considerations are as integral as economic ones. Green growth emerges at the intersection of these two facets, offering us the means to achieve both in unison.
12
Green growth is not a mere substitute for long-term development; it's a pragmatic and adaptable approach to making tangible progress across economic and environmental dimensions. It also accounts for the social consequences of greening economic growth dynamics. Green growth strategies aim to ensure that natural resources can sustainably fulfill their economic potential, providing vital services like clean air, water, resilient biodiversity for food production, and human health. Recognizing the finite nature of natural resources, green growth endeavors to maximize their utilization. Speaking of India, the three pillars of Indian green growth and energy transformation encompass: 1. Expanding renewable energy production. 2. Reducing the economy's dependence on fossil fuels. 3. Swiftly transitioning to a gas-based economy. Recent budgets have emphasized these concepts with measures such as ethanol blending, the PM KUSUM Yojana, incentives for solar manufacturing, rooftop solar initiatives, coal gasification, and battery storage. India, since 2014, has been the fastest-growing large economy in terms of renewable energy capacity addition. It met the goal of 40% non-fossil fuel contributions to installed electrical capacity nine years ahead of schedule, and it aims for 20% ethanol blending
in
petrol
by
2025-26.
India's
green
initiatives,
including
waterway
construction for greener freight handling, are setting the stage for a sustainable future.
This paradigm shift commences with the acknowledgment that trade isn't a zero-sum game; it can fuel economic growth while preserving our planet. In fact, these two pursuits are intertwined.
13
The Power of Innovation Innovation lies at the heart of progress and holds the key to unlocking trade's green potential. Our world is teeming with brilliant minds, each brimming with creative solutions to tackle contemporary challenges. It is imperative that we harness this collective brilliance and channel it toward sustainable trade practices. Technological advances can empower developing nations to play a more active role in greening global value chains, diversifying their economies, and transitioning to sustainable
sectors.
Successful
strategies
for
accelerating
renewable
energy
technology development, for instance, have been institutional, with governments enacting new environmental legislation to stimulate public-private collaboration on green transitions.
China's renewable energy regulation of 2006, Egypt's renewable energy law of 2014, and the global green hydrogen economy are prime examples of institutional progress. Developing countries now have the opportunity to meet the growing demand for electrolysers, essential for green hydrogen production, in Europe, Japan, and South Korea. Envision a world where renewable energy powers global supply chains, waste is minimized through innovative recycling, and ethical labor practices are non-negotiable. This world is within our grasp if we dare to innovate boldly. . Transparency and Accountability To forge a sustainable future, we must illuminate the shadows of our trade practices. Transparency and accountability are the cornerstones upon which trust is built. Consumers, investors, and governments demand to know the environmental and social impact of the products they support. By embracing transparency and holding ourselves accountable, we can ensure that our trade practices align with our commitment to a sustainable future. The best way to predict the future is to create it, and we have the power to shape a future where ethical trade is the norm.
14
Collaboration: The Heartbeat of Progress No endeavor of this magnitude can succeed without collaboration. Governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals must unite in a symphony of shared purpose. Let us transcend boundaries, both physical and ideological, to forge partnerships as diverse as the ecosystems we strive to protect. Governments have a plethora of policy interventions and financial mechanisms at their disposal to modernize energy and industrial systems, enhance energy efficiency, combat pollution, and conserve natural capital. This includes green taxes, stringent regulations, environmental standards, tax incentives, loans, and grants for green investments. Some nations are even prohibiting environmentally harmful energy sources or mandating the use of green energy. By uniting our efforts, we can set in motion a chain reaction of positive change that reverberates across industries and continents. Together, we can construct a future where sustainability isn't a buzzword but an indelible mark of progress.
Conclusion: Writing Our Legacy In conclusion, I implore each of you to recognize the immense power you hold, both as individuals and as integral components of larger systems. We are not passive observers but active architects of the future. Let us seize this opportunity to transform trade into a force for good, to unlock its green potential, and to secure a sustainable future for all. As we embark on this remarkable journey, remember that our actions today will shape the world of tomorrow. Let us script a legacy that inspires—a legacy measured not solely in profits but in the harmonious coexistence of humanity and our planet. Thank you for joining us in this quest to unlock trade's green potential. Together, we can make a world of difference."

EY: https://www.ey.com/en_gl/government-public-sector/six-ways-that-governmentscan-drive-the-green-transition Clear IAS: https://www.clearias.com/green-growth/

HOW HAS GLOBALISATION AND TRADE IMPACTED EDUCATION IN THE MODERNISING WORLD By: Kevin Wang, Australia In the ever-modernising world, globalisation arising from trade and technological development is inevitable. The increasing interconnectivity with innovations in areas such as transport and communication has naturally led to increased interdependence between economic and otherwise countries. Likewise, education has also been significantly impacted by globalisation and trade. They influence the quality, accessibility and types available to students worldwide. The quality of education has significantly improved with globalisation, with both the improvements in technology and the sharing of educational practices increasing the educational rate over the entire globe. Improvements in technology have led to the creation of many innovative forms of education previously unseen, which undoubtedly have been beneficial to the process of learning worldwide. YouTube, for example, although seen by many as a source of entertainment, actually has 7 out of 10 viewers using it in the process of learning, whether it’d be for work, school or simply personal inquiry. Furthermore, YouTube is unique in its user-created content, allowing people from around the globe to share resources, knowledge and strategies for learning. Recently, YouTube has seen a rise in productivity videos, which are videos specifically designed to share learning strategies and advice. It is this interconnectivity arising out of globalisation that allows platforms like YouTube to compile and offer resources and practices for learning from all across the globe. In fact, YouTube is just one resource of many that can be found online and collated by people from all across the globe. For example, Khan Academy itself has courses taught by experts from different fields and different countries and has been established in 190 countries. These resources, often acting as supplements to learning in real life, are extremely helpful for students who wish to consolidate their learning or explore areas not taught by the school. The advancement of technology also offers a unique and improved education experience in and of itself. One such prominent case is that of ChatGPT. For starters, ChatGPT has access to a huge database of resources, and its interactive features allow the user to also access said database. What makes ChatGPT even more important is its conversation capabilities, allowing it to serve as a teacher and expert in a field and provide explanations, roadmaps and advice.
20
However, what makes GenAI technology like ChatGPT so useful may also raise significant issues. Currently, an estimated 90% of students use ChatGPT for academic pursuits. This raises problems around academic integrity, as this technology which is significantly disruptive to the education landscape raises more questions around plagiarism and whether or not the students are truly learning from the usage of ChatGPT. Nevertheless, the interconnectivity brought by globalisation and trade has seen the creation of many tools and supplements that, albeit positioned in a morally grey area for education, are undoubtedly extremely beneficial in student learning. With increased globalisation, the accessibility of education has also been increasing. It enables remote learning, with students able to attend online classes and complete degree programs from anywhere, breaking geographical barriers. While this was most prominently seen during COVID-19, remote learning and communication using tools such as Zoom remains relevant even now. This has thus allowed people from different geographical locations to collaborate, work and study together, which has opened the door for many new opportunities such as remote learning, online universities and access to live classes that otherwise would have been previously inaccessible. The advent of technology and interconnectivity has also led to affordability in learning, as knowledge previously requiring local teachers and money could now be accessed for free. This can be seen in resources such as the aforementioned Khan Academy, YouTube or other Massive Online Open Courses What’s more, the content is often taught in a better way than before. This means that the monetary barrier to education has been lowered, increasing the accessibility of quality education. This form of education also has the benefit of being extremely flexible, in that one can study whatever they want whenever they want, and at their own pace. This freedom gives individuals who previously chose not to pursue education and interests due to other commitments the ability to participate in learning. In effect, this lowers the barrier to education, increasing its accessibility for people who otherwise could not pursue it. In the educational landscape, the value of large online discussion platforms and communities, such as Stack Exchange, cannot be overstated. These platforms are pivotal in offering tailored support and knowledge to individual learners, facilitating a deeper understanding of complex concepts.
21
The interactive nature of these communities ensures that learners receive real-time assistance, mitigating the frustration and challenges associated with intricate topics and preventing potential disengagement from learning processes. In conclusion, the enhanced global interconnectivity, coupled with technological advancements, has effectively diminished educational barriers. This synergy yields an educational ecosystem characterized by unprecedented accessibility, fostering an inclusive and enriched learning environment for diverse global populations. Globalisation leads to the formation of unique educational opportunities for people worldwide. One such opportunity is studying abroad. OECD statistics show that 4.3 million students are studying outside their home country and pursuing tertiary education. The ability to study abroad for many students gives them opportunities to excel in a new environment to a greater extent than they otherwise would have. This might be due to their particular subject interest, which may be more developed in another country, or due to being able to access more resources in learning and development when studying at another institution away from their home country. Regardless, the option to study abroad gives people more room to develop their interests and obtain opportunities previously unavailable to them. Furthermore, international research has also greatly benefitted from globalisation, being responsible for 24% of scientific publications. International research offers many benefits, such as the inclusion of diverse perspectives leading to the sharing of skills and knowledge, the generalisability of research to the global population and the ability to address global challenges. This fosters the creation of a global united front when pursuing knowledge, which is vital for all future development. Outside of the tertiary environment, there has also been an increase in cultural exchange programs arising from greater global interconnectivity. Especially for students pursuing study in fields such as a foreign language or other humanities, such programs are vital in gaining unique perspectives of people from other places.
22
However, there does exist criticism against the aforementioned studying abroad, cultural exchange and research collaboration. Initially, a high-cost barrier to studying abroad and arguments that studying abroad does not yield greater outcomes remains an issue to be considered, since this does lead to uneven distribution of opportunities. Furthermore, differences in countries, especially with regards to culture and legal or political frameworks mean both studying overseas and international research often face scrutiny in issues over intellectual property and outcomes. Research and education may also face pressures to conform to international norms, potentially impacting national educational sovereignty. Regardless, there are undoubtedly benefits in the new opportunities created by globalisation, and such options will only continue to improve and offer individuals more benefits and opportunities in the future. In the evolving landscape of globalization and education, technology has emerged as a catalyst, enhancing learning quality and accessibility. Platforms like YouTube and Khan Academy exemplify the democratization of knowledge, while AI innovations like ChatGPT highlight the intersection of personalized learning and ethical considerations. The removal of geographical and financial barriers has been instrumental in promoting inclusivity in education. Opportunities offered by globalization, such as international collaborations and study abroad programs, are tempered by challenges related to cultural,
legal,
and
ethical
concerns.
