CIDI UNAM Después del éxito con la primera edición del taller “Desarrollando Talento Mexicano” y gracias a esa capacidad de reinvención que caracteriza el trabajo de Ariel Rojo, podemos afirmar que esta segunda edición es una versión mejorada y ampliada. Los estudiantes del Centro de Investigaciones de Diseño Industrial de la UNAM respondieron a esta nueva convocatoria sabiendo que el compromiso era superar las resultados del primero. La presión y exigencia fueron superiores pero los resultados hablan por si solos. En esta ocasión además la modalidad exigió ofrecer los productos a diferentes empresas, ejercicio complicado porque implica argumentar claramente alrededor de las ventajas que ofrecen los proyectos desarrollados. La aceptación que han tenido son muestra de que el binomio concepto respaldado por la comprensión del entorno cultural son garantía de la apropiación por parte del público consumidor. Los objetos-producto resultado de esta edición son motivadores. La experiencia de diseñar y comercializar permite a los estudiantes de nuestro centro adquirir habilidades que en el futuro se convertirán en ventajas competitivas en el momento de su inserción en el mercado laboral. Estos productos se convierten en una carta de presentación invaluable. Agradecemos el apoyo y disposición que Ariel Rojo ha dado a cada uno de los proyectos así como a cada uno de los estudiantes, esfuerzo que, estoy seguro fructificará en egresados de excelencia capaces de competir eficientemente en la economía global contemporánea que caracteriza a nuestra sociedad.
After the great success obtained in the first workshop “Developing Mexican Talent” and because of the capacity of reinvention that characterizes Ariel Rojo´s work, we can say that this second edition is an improved version. The industrial design students form CIDI at UNAM responded to the new call out knowing that the objective would be to out-top the results of the first workshop. The pressure and demands were greater but the final products speak for themselves. This time the students were to present their products to various companies, which meant more pressure for the participants since they had to argue on the benefits of their products over others in the market. The acceptance that they have had demonstrates that a good concept and the comprehension of our culture guarantee acceptance by the general public. The final products designed in this edition are motivating. The experience of having their products commercialized allows the students from our school to acquire abilities that in the near future will be advantages when they go on to work. These product are an invaluable presentation card. We would like to thank Ariel Rojo for the support and disposition that he has put in each project, and given to each student.

DESIGN STUDIO Ariel Rojo Design Studio es una firma comprometida con la calidad de vida buscando soluciones por medio del diseño. Conciencia, responsabilidad y humor son algunos de los ingredientes claves en sus propuestas. Fiel a una idea de Albert Einstein “Si buscas resultados distintos no hagas siempre lo mismo” Ariel Rojo cuestiona en cada uno de sus trabajos la manera en la que éstos son percibidos, robándole al usuario una sonrisa o un momento de reflexión. Parte de su formación académica ocurrió en la UNAM, sin embargo comienza a trabajar desde muy temprana edad, a los 17 años ya diseñaba circuitos impresos para plataformas petroleras entre otros campos de la electrónica. A los 21 años fue parte del equipo ganador del proyecto para la remodelación del Zócalo en la ciudad de México. “la tercer plaza mas grande del mundo” obteniendo una mención aparte por el diseño del mobiliario urbano, mismo que Ariel rojo diseño en este concurso. Estas dos experiencias en escalas han hecho que el trabajo de Ariel Rojo sea multifacético y multidisciplinario. Hoy en día Ariel Rojo Design Studio es una firma de diseño internacional, con clientes en México, Europa, Estados Unidos, Japón y Medio Oriente, su trabajo ha rebasado fronteras y ha sido reconocido y expuesto en diversos concursos, sitios, libros y revistas de diseño, desde la tienda de diseño del MoMA de N.Y. hasta las Olimpiadas de diseño del 2010 en Corea del Sur.
Ariel Rojo Design Studio is a firm committed to improving the quality of life through design solutions. Conscience, responsibility and good humor are some of the key ingredients in their proposals. Faithfull to one of Albert Einstein´s ideas: “If you expect different results, don’t do the same thing over and over again” Ariel Rojo is always after the way his designs are received taking a smile from the user or inspiring him in a deep thought. A period of his professional education was done at UNAM, however he started to work at a very young age, when 17 he was designing mother boards for the oil platforms among other electronic fields. At 21 he was part of the winning team for the remodeling project for the Zocalo in Mexico City, one of the three biggest squares in the world, receiving an individual mention for the design of the urban furniture design by him for this competition. These two experiences, in different scales, have influenced Ariel Rojo´s work to be both multistage and multidisciplinary. Today Ariel Rojo Design Studio is an international design firm with clients in Mexico, Europe, USA, Japan and the middle East. His projects have gone beyond the frontiers and have been awarded and exhibited in a myriad of specialized competitions, websites, books and magazines, from the design store at MoMA N.Y. to the Design Olympics 2010 in South Korea.

GAVA DESIGN Se realizó en mayo de este año un proyecto para desarrollar el talento mexicano y lo enfocamos en los alumnos de Diseño Industrial de la UNAM. En este proceso nos damos cuenta del gran potencial que tienen los alumnos de diseño, y como este concepto del diseño industrial mexicano, cada día está creciendo más a nivel nacional e internacional, y el talento mexicano está cobrando gran fuerza, por su creatividad, calidad e innovación. Teniendo esto en mente nos surge la idea de seguir dando a conocer el diseño mexicano, y apoyar al alumnado a seguir creando ideas que se puedan llevar a la realidad y comercializarlas a nivel internacional. En este taller vemos como hay mucha creatividad y se crean cosas no solo innovadoras, pero con gran funcionalidad y sobre todo muchísima calidad, que considero es una de las cosas que se distingue más en el diseño industrial mexicano. Nuestra propuesta es seguir promoviendo y buscando oportunidades comerciales tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, a estos proyectos en beneficio de los alumnos y el diseño mexicano. Ya que somos consientes que para que esto se haga realidad se necesita el elemento creativo, la producción y la comercialización y es la parte en donde nosotros estamos apoyando ese elemento creativo que tiene tanto valor.
In May 2010 we developed a workshop to promote Mexican talent focused on Industrial Design students from UNAM. After this process we realized the great potential that design students have, and how the concept of Mexican industrial design has grown national and internationally, characterized by its creativity, quality and innovation. With this in mind, we decided to continue promoting Mexican design, with the objective of supporting students so they can continue creating ideas that can be produced and commercialized national and internationally. This workshop is full of creative ideas, and the products designed are not only innovative but also completely functional and with a lot of quality, which is, in my opinion, characteristic of Mexican design. Our goal is to keep on promoting and searching for commercial opportunities national and internationally, for these projects in order to benefit design students and Mexican design in general, because we know that to make these projects possible we need not only the creative element, but also production and commercialization elements, which we provide to students.

A+B=D A+B=D es un proyecto de colaboración entre Ariel Rojo y estudiantes en distintas escuelas de diseño para desarrollar productos funcionales que puedan ser llevados al mercado tanto nacional como internacional. En esta ocasión, Ariel Rojo trabajó en conjunto con estudiantes de Diseño Industrial de la UNAM para crear una serie de objetos utilizando la fórmula de innovación propuesta por él mismo.
A+B=D is a collaborative project between Ariel Rojo and students from different Design schools with the objective of creating functional products with the possibility of being produced national and internationally.
La metodología del taller parte de una formula muy sencilla A+B=D. En donde A puede ser un elemento cultural, una referencia contextual o una historia, mientras que B es simplemente un objeto como una silla, un anillo, una taza, una lámpara, etc... Incorporar estos atributos o referencias culturales o contextuales al objeto son parte del ejercicio y son estos atributos los que le dan sentido al nuevo diseño, en este caso representado en la formula como D.
The methodology used in this workshop starts from a simple formula: A+B+D. The element “A” can be a cultural element, a context reference or a story, while “B” is simply a known object such as a chair, a ring, a cup, a lamp, etc. By combining attributes of cultural or contextual references with known objects results in a whole new object, represented by the element “D”.
Uno de los factores importantes de este taller es el trabajo en equipo con un estudio consolidado en el campo, buscando mejores resultados. Ariel Rojo no solo guía a los estudiantes, si no colabora con ellos en el proceso de diseño y desarrollo de los productos, aportando soluciones formales o conceptos. Finalmente, la oficina de Ariel Rojo se encargará de refinar y promover los resultados para buscar una salida comercial tanto nacional como internacionalmente. Todos los resultados son un trabajo en conjunto entre el diseñador, el estudiante y el equipo de diseño de Ariel Rojo, compartiendo créditos y regalías entre el diseñador y el estudiante.
This time, Ariel Rojo worked with Industrial Design students from UNAM to create a series of objects using the innovation formula developed by himself.
An important aspect of this design workshop is the collective work with a successfull design firm, searching for better results. Instead of guiding the students, Ariel Rojo collaborates with them through the design process contributing with solutions or concepts. Finally, Ariel Rojo’s design studio looks for ways of promoting the end result and a commercial output national and internationally. All the final designs are a product of group work between the designer, the students and Ariel Rojo´s design team, sharing credits and royalties between the designer and the student

TAPETE/OSO BIPOLAR RUG/BIPOLAR BEAR “Bipolar Bear” Rug is the fusion of the classic polar bear rug, that only a few have, with a theme that we should pay attention to: bipolarity. I wanted to handle it with an optimistic vew making a “cartoon like” expression and changin the material under the “non animal pruducts usage” conviction. PIRINOLA/TOMA TODO, TOMA NADA. PIRINOLA/DESIGNATED DRIVER GAME It’s an idea for creating conscience in young people about drinking and driving. This little game of chance, “TOMA TODO, TOMA NADA”has been made to support government programs like “designated driver”. The idea of this game is the acceptance of such programs by youths aged 18 to 35 years old so they can be more conscious of the risks involved in drunk driving Material: Aluminum and wood Con la idea de crear conciencia en los jóvenes del peligro de manejar en estado de ebriedad así como tener un consumo responsable de alcohol. Este pequeño juego de azar TOMA TODO, TOMA NADA está encaminado a apoyando programas como CONDUCTOR DESIGNADO. This is a campaign project, that invites people to give a value (most of all money) to the garbage that we generate, trying to involve the waste management. Giving a value to the garbage will help us to be conscious of what we buy and what we throw away. CINTA MÉTRICA/CINCHO MEASURING TAPE/CINCHO Cincho is a measuring tape that tries to give a sense of humor to the action of measure ourselves, dealing also with the obesity problem. This tape shows a comparative between centimeters and different objects, providing diverse perimeters and a funny learning. Material: Polyethylene(PE) Cincho es una cinta métrica que pretende humorizar la acción de medirnos y abordar el problema de la obesidad. Por medio de un comparativo entre los centímetros y objetos, provee de diversos perímetros generando un divertido aprendizaje. Material: Polietileno (PE)

MACETAS/CABEZAS PREHISPÁNICAS PRE-HISPANIC FLOWERPOT HEADS This design, born from the idea of conserving nature in our heads, consists of three head-shaped flowerpots inspired by three different Mexican ancient cultures: Olmec, Totlec and Totonac. Material: Ceramics Diseño que nace de la idea de mantener la naturaleza en nuestra cabeza, consiste en una serie de tres macetas con forma de cabeza, las cuales están inspiradas en tres diferentes culturas mexicanas (olmeda, tolteca y totonaca). VASOS PARA REFRESCOS SODA CUPS To sensitize people about the dangers of soft drinks, due to its graphics. A character made with black and orange hidden vinyl, reveals the damage in organs and bones caused by soft drinks with every sip, as the cup gets empty. It also contains and informative text about such damages. Material: Plastic cups with pad graphics Vasos para refresco, para concientizar a las personas acerca de los daños de tomar bebidas gaseosas; debido a que tienen un gráfico de un personaje que cuando uno llena el vaso de refresco se esconden los algunos viníles negros o naranjas; y cada vez que se toma un trago estos viníles van revelando los problemas en órganos o huesos del personaje. SALERO-PIMENTERO/SALTAN PEPPER SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS/SALTAN PEPPER The problem around the migration is a topic that in the last years has been growing, as much so exist countries that have implemented norms or systems to avoid the transit of people of illegal way. Based on this, “Saltan Pepper” is a product that makes reference to the border wall between the United States and Mexico, where the napkin holder represents this bard, the salt shaker characterized like a Sheriff and of the “another side”, a migrant like the pepper shaker. Material: Stainless Steel, Walnut wood, Polypropylene El problema de la migración es una termática que en los últimos años a ido creciendo, tanto así que existen países que han implementado normas o sistemas para evitar el tránsito de persona de manera ilegal. Basado en esto, “Saltan Pepper” es un producto que hace referencia al muro fronterizo entre Estados Unidos y México, donde el servilletero representa esta barda, el salero caracterizado como un Sheriff y del “otro lado”, un migrante como pimentero. Material: Wax De acuerdo a la temática del peligro de extinción de especies endémicas de cactáceas en México propongo la idea de unas velas en forma de cactus y de forma simbólica cada vez que se apaga la vela se extingue su llama de forma simbólica, siendo un detonador de plática. This dispensed consumption concept brings to life the general shape of the object, transforming it in to a fluids container pill. Material: Stainless Steel Bottle, 750 ml (commercial piece), Polypropylene, Silicon Rubber Dose Pill es un termo diseñado en torno al concepto del consumo de su contenido como dosis, ya sea por necesidad, costumbre o adicción. Este concepto de consumo dosificado da vida a la forma del objeto, transformándolo en una píldora contenedora de líquidos. The whale on one end is a container for your favourite tea infusions, so when you dip it in hot water the diluted herbs will come out of its belly . Pete will work as a counterwheit, so when your tea is ready, you can easily extract the whale and enjoy! Material: Silicone Fisherman Pete es un infusor de té. ALMOHADA DE VIAJE/COYOTITO PILLOW/COYOTITO Mexican culture is characterized for the appropriation of their language in a playful way; an example of this is the phrase “echarse un coyotito” that refers to taking a nap during the day. In this case the “Coyotito” appears to provide comfort during those naps, fusing Mexican identity with a clear functionality. Material: Felt Textile and synthetic pillow stuffing
La cultura mexicana se caracteriza por apropiarse de su lenguaje de manera lúdica; un ejemplo de ello es la frase “echarse un coyotito” que hace referencia a dormir una siesta durante el día. En este caso ese coyotito aparece para brindar comodidad durante esas siestas; fusionando la identidad mexicana con una funcionalidad clara. Material: Fieltro textil y relleno sintético para almohada

This device helps to direct the bike trajectory through a city in chaos. Material: Plastico Inyectado y acero inoxidable Luces direccionales con un diseño basado en las flechas que encontramos constantemente para señales de tránsito, su estética continúa la configuración tubular del cuadro generando armonía.
