Contemporary Art Museum

Birmingham Contemporary Art Museum Building was inspired by other Birmingham City landmarks such as the Selfridges and Library of Birmingham building, which both carried the important part to create and form Birmingham City's identity. So this building will be the next landmark of Birmingham that will help the city to create its identity.

The facade of the museum is made out of polycarbonate panels which use not only to filter direct sunlight into the building but also to give the mysterious figures of the artworks and the visitors inside the building for people from outside the museum. It encourages them to come and visit the exhibition spaces.

Birmingham Contemporary Art Museum Background Birmingham as the second largest city in the United Kingdom have the history of being a fast-moving industrial city and it is still now under massive developments with more new buildings and urban design are being proposed.

In Birmingham, iconic buildings that act as a landmark has always been looked up as what Birmingham City is, such as the Selfridges Building, Library of Birmingham and The Rotunda.

These famous building has been creating the image of how and what Birmingham City is. Creating an iconic building that leaves such an impression to the city will help to build the city’s identity. Contemporary Art has been looked at as the new type of art, what millennials and young adult both enjoyed. Birmingham has more than 60% young adult living in the city and Contemporary Art in Birmingham has been growing without a proper facility that any museum can hold any big exhibition so that contemporary art can come and exhibit their work in Birmingham. With this research and understanding of both Birmingham Iconic Building and Birmingham Contemporary Art. Design Requirements The building needs to show how it can be an iconic building from its facade in reference of the other iconic building in Birmingham such as The Selfridges and The Library of Birmingham to help to form the city’s identity The museum needs to be able to hold a great contemporary art with all facilities that are required. Long Museum West Bund is located at the bank of Huangpu River, Xuhui District, Shanghai Municipality, the site of which was used as the wharf for coal transportation. Before the commencement of the design, a Coal-Hopper-Unloading-Bridge of about 110m in length, 10m in width and 8m in height, which was constructed in the 1950s, is remained with a two-storey underground parking completed as early as two years ago.

The new design adopts the cantilever structure featuring vault-umbrella with independent walls while the shear walls with free layout are embedded into the original basement so as to be concreted with the original framework structure. With the shear walls, the first underground floor of the original parking has been transformed to an exhibition space with the overground space highlighting multiple orientations because of the relative connection of the “vault-umbrella� at different directions; besides, the electrical & mechanical system has been integrated in the vault-umbrella structure. As to the overground space covered by the vault-umbrella, the walls and the ceiling feature as-cast-finish concrete surface so that their geometrical dividing line seems faint.

Environmental With the main facade of the building is facing mostly south and west, there is not really that much problem with the sunlight coming in inside the building, except during summer time where the direct sunlight can heat up the inside of the building. Soon the curtain wall the glass will be replaced with a polycarbonate material that will filter the direct sunlight that goes inside the building.

Polycarbonate as a facade material is not only used in this building to filter direct sunlight that is not needed in most contemporary art museum since it might damage the artwork, but also gives a shadow effect from outside of the building so visitors from outside the museum can see the figure outline of the artworks inside.

The ventilation system of this building will be using both the air conditioner and natural ventilation that will let hot air raises and come out of the building. Air conditioner ventilation system will be placed on the slab floors of the building so it can reheat and cool down the room.

Regulations Fire exit

This building main function is a contemporary art museum, which have a secondary function as a shared community space such as retail shops and cafe. The fire escape system in the building are mainly applied based on the Approved Document B2 for other than dwelling buildings with the maximum escape route of 18 meters on one direction fire exit and 45meters for more that one direction of the fire exit.

On the floor plan the route can be seen as both horizontal and vertical refugee routes.

Structural Strategy

This project main structure components are reinforced concrete with curtain wall at the facade ing. The slab are also reinforced concretes with columns and load bearing walls. These columns and walls are not only used as a building structural system but also it acts as the building stability the lift shaft. The building stability system will helps the building to hold a vertical load from the building such as wind and other lateral forces.

Access

The access route of the site to the Edgsbaston Resevoir are quite easy with a lot of possible public transport and on the site of the Contermporary Art Museum with the difference changes in the topography, a better access of dissabled are very much needed. Such as installing ramps among the site are neccessary but also installing lift and other designs requirements are applied in the public and private toilet and also the fire exit route.

Co Lab Adventures In Hybrid Realities Working with other students on a design process has been a very creative and experimenting experience.

Where we work on a persona, Ashraf, and work in his point of view of how he uses HS2 train station and his experience with Mixed and Virtual Reality. In this module we work as a team to do research on social curency and how it would effect other peple especially Ashraf.

We also experiementing with Virtual Reality software, Unity where we can apply VR (Virtual Reality) to the real reality through different targets, which can be seen in the video links.
