PLAYERS TALK

Q&A On Everything Gaming

Q: When I play a slot machine, if I haven’t won anything, even just one credit after five spins, I will move to another machine. Sometimes this pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. Is this me being impatient or is this a wise strategy? How much time should you give yourself at a machine before moving on? Sheyla Owens – Casa Grande, AZ A: Sheyla, slot manufacturers are designing modern games that are increasingly more volatile—meaning it’s not uncommon to experience five, or even ten, spins in a row without getting a single win. Therefore, it seems as though you may not be giving the games a chance by pressing the spin button just a few times and then moving on. Doing this may deplete your bankroll much quicker than investing a little more time and money on one game. We recommend $40 as an initial investment to “test” a game before you get up and move to another machine if it’s not going well and here’s why: The average number of spins (called the pulls-to-hit) it takes to trigger a bonus varies from slot to slot. Extremely volatile slots can take over 180 spins, on average, to hit a bonus whereas less volatile slots have much lower pulls-tohits of between 60 and 80 spins. (As a slot enthusiast, you should be able to have a rough idea of approximately how many spins it takes to get into the bonuses on your preferred slot games so you can plan your budget accordingly.) If we assume your favorite slot game has medium volatility with an average bonus pulls-to-hit of 120 and you intend on wagering 30¢ per spin, you can expect to spend roughly $36 before triggering a bonus. Remember this amount includes all the wins you will be getting as you’re playing the game as well. With $40, you have a very high chance of hitting one or more bonuses which will, often times, put you ahead of your initial stake. Since the $40 test is based on a medium volatility game at minimum bet, make sure to adjust the initial stake based on your playing style. If you tend to wager 60¢ per spin, then the appropriate bankroll would be $80, and so on. Always be realistic when setting your budget because this will increase your

chances of getting ahead! Be patient when playing these new highly volatile slots, and sit back, relax and have fun!

Q: Do you think we have an advantage if we bet more on the slots? We like to play the ones with the bonuses and the progressives. We also play Video Poker from time to time. Thank you. Mr. & Mrs. Krajewski – Glendale, AZ A: Mr. & Mrs. Krajewski, the simple truth of the matter is that, in many cases, the more you bet the more you increase your chances of winning on most video slot games. Here are just a few examples of games that reward players wagering the higher amounts: Video Poker where max credits played awards a bonused Royal Flush, randomly triggered Progressive games such as the Fort Knox slot games where higher wagers have an increased chance of initiating the Progressive, and Community Games where higher multipliers are offered for larger bettors. There are also advantages to playing some Mechanical Reel Slots that have more pays and higher payouts only available with higher bets. Always make sure to read the help screens and pay tables to determine if betting max will give you an extra advantage!

Q: Why are there fewer and fewer cocktail servers on the casino floors? This seems to be really obvious in larger casinos in Arizona, Laughlin and Vegas. What’s going on? Ronald Gerangelo – Tucson, AZ A: Ronald, we can only surmise why this would be the case, but your first option is to mention your concern to the casino management. Cost and personnel issues are most likely the culprits of fewer service staff. With the downturn of the economy, entertainment destinations, including casinos, have to evaluate budgets and cost-saving measures they might not have considered before 2008. Remember that each casino is still a business, frequently run by people with MBAs. Not all of these executives are always concerned with customer service and providing a complete entertainment experience, which may or may not

Q&A On Everything Gaming include cocktail or drink service on the casino floor. When you do encounter your next cocktail server and order a drink from them, even if it’s just tap water, make sure to tip them as a significant portion of their wages come from tips. Q: I love to play Video Poker. I used to play the Double Bonus and Double Double Bonus games, but I recently started playing Deuces Wild and Joker’s Wild. I feel like these games let me play longer and I also have more fun playing them. My husband says I’m wasting my time playing them because they’re the worst Video Poker games. Is that true? Eugenia Varela – Phoenix, AZ A: Eugenia, I would have to disagree with your husband. Both of the Video Poker games you mention are excellent! There’s a reason why Deuces Wild is one of the most popular Video Poker games on the casino floors. The four Deuces, which are wild cards, not only provide a lot of excitement and anticipation but also make the game a lot less volatile than most other Video Poker games. However, did you know that when playing this game using optimal strategy you are discarding all 5 cards 20% of the time? Yes, 1 in 5 deals will have you drawing all new cards. Patience is key! The good news is that discarding all 5 cards will yield wins 6% of the time!

PLAYERS TALK

Joker Poker games where the Joker is Wild are also a ton of fun! Here’s a hint: watch out for the games that pay 15 credits (with a maximum wager of 5 credits) for a Four-of-a-Kind rather than 20! There is a 4% drop in the payback percentage with this variation. Also, stay away from games that pay on two pair rather than a pair of Kings!

Q: I only play the dollar slots and I do pretty well on them. I’m usually the one coming home with money. My wife, who plays the video slots, just goes home with an empty wallet and a whole lot of ’I was so close’ stories but not a lot of wins to speak of. I tell her to play my slots, she says they’re too boring. She just wants her bonuses. Tell me, on a game like Double Diamond, how often do those three diamonds happen? They must be happening frequently because I’ve gotten them more times than I can remember! Ed Brown – Sierra Vista, AZ A: Ed, you’re right! The jackpot on the Double Diamond slot by IGT has a high probability of occurring as it hits once in every 50,000 spins, on average. Given that one spin takes about 5 seconds to complete, 50,000 spins translates to approximately one jackpot every three days! Those are some great odds! $

Interview with a slot designer

BEHIND THE CAPE—THE MAKING OF SUPER TEAM

T

he most customizable slot adventure in history is ready to take flight, so we sat down with the creative mind behind SUPER TEAM slots by WMS to get a behind-the-scenes look at a game over 15 years in the making. Super Team slots appears to be a very large slot game – how many total bonus and feature rounds exist? It seems like a lot, but there are just two parts of Super Team: Heroes and Bonus Games. Heroes do special things to the reels, like adding wilds in different ways, giving multipliers, or even awarding progressives. Bonus Games play out the full special bonuses with your Personal Hero as the star. There are three different Bonus Games, and 15 different Heroes, and they all combine in a lot of different ways. So in one way there are two things that happen, and in another, there are thousands. How long did you work on Super Team slots? Believe it or not, we’ve been working on Super Team for about fifteen years. We always loved the idea of dynamically generated power-ups for better wins, but the game logic was more than the technology could handle. The new [CPU-NXT3] motherboard and video card let us finally make Super Team the way we wanted to. When we got that, we knew it was time for Super

Team to finally put on its cape and fly. How many people total were involved with Super Team slots? Would you believe ninety-nine? I can hardly believe it myself. But between all the painters, riggers, animators, mathematicians, engineers, sign builders, musicians, play testers, business people, suit-stitchers, cape wranglers, mad scientists, and super villains, we get to ninety-nine. Add the guy who puts the light on top of the cabinet, and it’s an even hundred. This reminds me of playing a cartoon – is this game aimed at a younger generation of players, or do you expect this to be just as popular with more “mature” players? I think both older and younger players will relate to the idea of a powerful friend who can rescue you from a bad spin. For us, these costumed heroes use their powers for spinning up great wins. I’ve often wished someone would just fly down out of the sky and give me a progressive. Well, now Mr. Maximum is here to do just that. It’s funny, but I don’t think of heroes as just for kids. Many comic heroes are in their 70s at this point, and have been around as long as the Social Security they’re collecting. What is your favorite bonus in the game? I like that you can pick which unlocked bonus round you want to play, because our bonus rounds are quite different! The Fortress Bonus gives your hero half a minute to fly through an enemy fortress. Your hero flies through guns while being awarded credit prizes, more time and speedups, and you can use the game buttons to steer up and down. Or people might prefer the Robot Fight Free Spins. On every win in this bonus, your Personal Hero attacks the robot. Destroy a robot for a prize, AND the free spins keep going as another robot appears! They’ll go on as long as your hero keeps defeating those robots. The heroes Expanda and The Big Punch appear in this bonus… when they appear together, you can really get some good wins going. How often can players expect to see a feature trigger? As a player, you get to decide the relative frequency of heroes. We have the heroes divided into two teams, and you pick the one you’d like to play with. Team Emerald comes down more often on average than Team Ruby, but Team Ruby pays larger amounts on average than Team Emerald. (Now that’s an aver(Continued on page 16)

(Continued from page 14)

age…some lucky player could get Team Ruby coming down lots and lots, and some other lucky player could have a really big win on Team Emerald. Math! Go figure.) Do you have a favorite hero? Now, now. They are ALL my favorites. But I think no one who sees Bubble Girl in action will be disappointed. What was the biggest challenge in designing this game? The biggest challenge in designing Super Team was in letting go of some of the really cool ideas we had because the game just got too huge. We could have been working on it for another twelve years if we’d wanted to. Sigh. If Super Team turns out to be popular enough with players, though, maybe we can get them in Super Team II. The trailer for the game showed a player having both trophies and Hero Points. How many trophies are there in the game, and how can players win them? Most of the trophies are won in the casino. We award them for certain wins with different heroes, good bonuses and things like that. A couple are skill-related…for getting through our Fortress Bonus without hitting the walls or getting hit by a missile. There’s also a trophy for online play. If you get the online trophy playing the mini-game, you unlock the super disco outfit for your Personal Hero. They look pretty cool fighting robots and catching burglars in that. All told, there are more than 40 trophies you can win, which are tracked by your Player’s Life account and can be viewed both at the slot machine and online. How does the personal hero customization work? How many possible combinations are there? At any time before or after a spin, you can touch your Personal Hero’s picture on the bottom of the screen and change what they’re wearing, the color of their skin, change hairstyles…you can even make them fly around in their underwear. If you log in and save your Hero Points, you get to unlock even more costume pieces and more colors. All told, there are well over a million combinations. What is your favorite part of the game? I love that you can dress up your own hero, and then they play in the bonus rounds for you. It’s silly, I know, but it makes me feel closer to the win. I’m hoping players will feel the same way! Do you have a favorite hero “look” you can share with us? My favorite combinations…well, we have a program we use to test the games that just randomly touches everywhere on the screen. Somehow, those random touches always came up with the coolest, most unpredictable costumes. So go ahead, close your eyes, and start slapping the screen. You never know what you’ll come up with!

AZ Department of Gaming

Hits The Jackpot!

O

n Friday, October 26, the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) hit the Jackpot Café, located at 6514 West Bethany Home Road, to investigate suspected illegal gambling activities. With the assistance of the Glendale Police Department and the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, the ADG served simultaneous warrants at the Jackpot Café and a private residence of one of the suspects. Agents seized more than 40 gambling devices, computers, a vehicle, and over $940,000. Two patrons were also arrested for unrelated charges.

Evidence gathered suggested possible violations including: the possession of gambling devices, the promotion of gambling, benefitting from gambling and conducting a criminal enterprise. ADG also launched a thorough financial investigation tracking money from the gambling activities to various accounts throughout the country. Ignoring a “Cease and Desist” order served by the Glendale Police Department for licensing violations, Jackpot Café remained in operation until Friday evening. “The flashing lights and sirens went off at the Jackpot Café on Friday, but there were no winners,” said Mark Brnovich, Director of the Arizona Department of Gaming. “Illicit gambling operations and the public hazards they entail will not be tolerated in our communities.” No further arrests have been made as the investigation is still on-going. To report suspected illegal gambling, contact your local police department or ADG at 602-255-3888. About the AZ Department of Gaming

The investigation began earlier this year when ADG received a complaint of an internet café and an amusement center that might be hosting illegal gambling activities in the city of Glendale. The Glendale Police Department received similar complaints and the two agencies launched an undercover investigation. The ADG agents confirmed customers of the Jackpot Café were doing more than just Internet surfing and coffee sipping, they were playing slot machine type games to win cash.

Funded entirely by the gaming industry, the AZ Department of Gaming (ADG) uses no taxpayer funds to operate. They employ over 100 team members which include certified fraud examiners, slot machine technicians, AZPOST-certified peace officers, financial investigators and auditors and administrative staff. ADG’s main office is located in central Phoenix with satellite offices located in Flagstaff and Tucson. Gaming facilities are also located throughout the state. $

As of October 1, 2012, the total Tribal contributions from gaming revenue to the State of Arizona was $819,507,582! That’s over $819 MILLION directly benefitting Arizona.

Nine Successive Quarters of Increased Gaming Revenue Help Support Arizona

T

he Arizona Department of Gaming recently announced that the tribal contributions to the state from gaming revenue was approximately $23.9 million for the quarter that ended September 30, 2012. This is a 3.2 percent increase from the same quarter of last year. It also marks the ninth consecutive quarter increase. “The latest figures are encouraging,” said Mark Brnovich, the Director of the Arizona Department of Gaming. “While the national economy continues to flounder, for nine consecutive quarters we have seen an increase in tribal contributions in Arizona. This trend is a positive economic sign for our state and critical programs will continue to receive funding.” The quarterly tribal contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund will be distributed as follows: Instructional Improvement Fund/Education: $11,909,592 Trauma and Emergency Services Fund: $ 5,954,796 Arizona Department of Gaming Costs: $ 2,150,609 Arizona Wildlife Conservation Fund: $ 1,701,370 State Tourism Fund: $ 1,701,370 Problem Gambling Education, Treatment and Prevention: $ 477,913 TOTAL tribal contributions for the quarter that ended September 30, 2012: $23,895,650

A group of nine lucky co-workers and friends, who work in the financial industry in Chandler, claimed the $1.7 million “The Pick” jackpot from the drawing on Saturday, November 3. The winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at a Circle K located at 295 S. Arizona Ave. in Chandler. The group has been playing The Pick since February of last year and selected the game since it’s Arizona’s own jackpot game. The group plays the Wednesday and Saturday draws each week, and everyone in the pool contributes $8 every other week to participate. Barry Hackett, the pool representative, checked the tickets on the Arizona Lottery website and immediately checked them again three more times before asking one of his co-workers to come check the numbers with him. Her immediate reaction was, “Yeah, right!” Hackett said they then quietly called the seven other players over to their office area and told them the news. There were big grins, excitement, looks of disbelief, and even a few happy tears according to Hackett. “It was exciting to have a big group of winners at the Arizona Lottery Phoenix office,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products & communications for the Arizona Lottery. “It’s always fun to award a prize to an office pool, and it’s a bonus when the prize is shared among a good group of friends.” The group selected the cash option and each member received a check for $125,925.92 before taxes. Most of the office pool members plan to pay off bills and pay off or pay down mortgages with their winnings. When asked if they were going to celebrate, Hackett said, “There’s probably a happy hour in our future for celebration.” Winning numbers for “The Pick” are broadcast Wednesdays and Saturdays during the 10 p.m. news on Channel 13 (CBS) in Tucson and posted on www.ABC15.com in Phoenix. Players can check their numbers by logging onto www.ArizonaLottery.com or by calling the winning numbers hotline at 480-829-PICK in Phoenix and 1-800499-3798 in all other Arizona areas. Players can also opt-in to receive winning number text alerts by texting “AZLOT” to 411247. Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Overall odds vary by game. Proceeds from sales of Lottery tickets - over $3 million per week - fund a variety of state programs. Since July 1981, the Arizona Lottery has paid out more than $5 billion in prizes to players, over $2.8 billion in net profit to the state and almost $591 million in commissions to all the Arizona Lottery retailers.

G

ary Fratos always plays his own numbers when he purchases Mega Millions tickets with the Megaplier, and that’s for two draws a week. He recently went to the store and had the clerk check his ticket for October 2, 2012, never expecting anything other than his usual $2 to $3 win. However, this time, the terminal began to print out a lot of paperwork, so he figured it had to be at least $600. He took the ticket and the paperwork home and carefully, he thought, checked the ticket online and discovered he had five matching numbers for $250,000. He was ecstatic. At 3 a.m., he awoke with a start, because he’d remembered that he always bought the Megaplier. Since the number for October 2 was a four, that meant his $250,000 was really worth $1,000,000. That was the end of his sleep for the night. Gary, who recently retired, admits to being a bit of an adrenaline junkie. He’s done everything in life that he’s wanted to do and has no regrets. The former racecar driver and mechanic still rides his motorcycle, has tried bungee jumping, and now plans to find some new challenges. In the meantime, he plans to buy a new car and give his old car to a friend who needs one. He’s already been in touch with his accountant for some solid financial advice.

Adopted Quick Pick Numbers Are Now Her Own

O

ver the years, a number of AZ Lottery players have purchased Quick Picks on various games, liked the numbers, and kept them for their own to play again. That’s exactly what Catherine DeLong of Phoenix did, and her adopted Quick Pick numbers won her a $194,000 Fantasy 5 Jackpot on October 15, 2012. Since she sometimes forgets to buy tickets, she usually purchases a multi-draw ticket with one line per draw. Catherine checked her numbers by calling the Arizona Lottery Hotline. When she first heard the numbers, her heart began pounding so fast that she forgot to breathe. Her first thought was that she’d made a mistake, so she called back three times to listen to the numbers to be sure. At that point, she still didn’t know if she was the only winner, so she finally called the Lottery and spoke to a customer service representative who told her there was only one Fantasy 5 winner for the October 15, 2012 draw. The winning ticket was purchased from Fuel Stop 101 located 701 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix.

Hints & Tips

WINNING WAYS

YOU CAN HELP CASINO SECURITY If you’ve seen the movie Casino, then you surely remember Robert de Niro’s character as casino manager and his narration about casino security—The dealers are watching the players. The pit bosses are watching the dealers. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The floor manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the floor manager. And, the “eye in the sky” is watching us all. Let’s face it, a casino is probably one of the safest places to be. Anyone who tries to do something there they shouldn’t be doing will most likely get caught. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautionary measures to keep yourself safe. Often times the holidays make people feel desperate, so here are some simple and practical tips to protect yourself while at the casino: Don’t use the slot trays. Slot trays weren’t meant to house personal belongings such as purses, wallets, keys, and cell phones. Someone can easily reach in and grab these items without your knowledge. Put away your money. Don’t hold your money in your hand. When you’re at the cage or ticket machine make sure to put away your money safely into your purse or wallet before you walk away. Guard your tax slip. Keep the tax slip in a secure location. Your name, address, social security number and other personal information is contained on tax slips given out by the casinos. Watch your purse and wallet. Ladies, the safest way to carry a purse or hold it in your lap is in a criss-cross fashion over the shoulder. It is much more difficult for someone to snatch the purse and run. Men, never carry your wallet in a back pocket. It’s in a much more secure location in a front pocket. Take advantage of casino services. Use the valet parking, because a small tip, or even a small fee, is an insignificant price to pay for the added safety and peace of mind. Ask for a security escort to your car if you’ve won a large sum of money. Then make sure you’re not being followed home. Be aware of your surroundings. Always be aware of the people that are playing next to you and standing around you. Be cautious of any person that is behaving in a suspicious manner. Have fun and stay safe! $

Mr. Ben Franklin’s Lessons On Gambling Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States and a noted author, scientist, inventor, and politician, is also famous for his adages; many of which seem to have a universal “gambling” premise. Lessons we can all be the wiser from. “He that waits upon a fortune is never sure of a dinner.” Never go to the casino expecting to win money and never go with money you can’t afford to lose. “In this world, nothing is for certain except death and taxes.” Keep this quote in mind next time you hear yourself or someone else saying “I know the machine is due for a big win/bonus now.” “A small leak can sink a great ship.” Make sure to limit your casino excursions, because even with carefully planned budgets, frequent trips to the casino can start to have adverse affects on your wallet. “Good sense is a thing we all need, few have, and none think they want.” Don’t leave your common sense at the door when you visit a casino! Make sure to set a budget and a time limit, read the help screens, have fun but play responsibly. “Time is Money.” Planning how long you want to be at the casino is just as important as planning how much money you can afford to spend while there. Take each of these lessons to heart and keep them in the back of your mind the next time you visit a casino. $ azgamingguide.com | December 2012 | Arizona Gaming Guide

TRIBAL NEWS

Commentary

Myth of Indian Casino Riches By Dwanna L. Robertson—Guest Contributing Writer Indian Country Today Media Network

I

f I had a nickel for every time someone asked me about receiving money from Indian casinos, I’d be rich. NonNatives generally assume Indians get rich from tribal casinos. People have difficulty reconciling myth with facts, especially about a subject so politicized. The lack of knowledge plus the complexity of federal-state-tribe relations contribute to common misconceptions about Indian gaming. First: What is Indian gaming? Traditionally, most tribes had some gaming—shell games, archery, etc. Now Indian gaming ranges from ceremonial games to Vegas-like operations. Congress established control of Indian gaming with the 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). IGRA categorized gaming into Class I, Class II and Class III and established the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) to regulate federally recognized tribes’ gaming operations. Consisting only of ceremonial and social gaming for nominal prizes, Class I is subject to tribal regulation only—not state or federal. Class II and Class III gaming are both subject to regulation under IGRA. Class II gaming generally means bingo, lotto, pull tabs, poker, etc. Class III operations include games of chance not included in Class I or II; e.g., slot machines, craps & blackjack. IGRA stipulates a tribe opening a Class III gaming enterprise must have a tribal-state compact or an agreement, approval by tribal ordinance, and ap-

proval by the NIGC. Last, Indian gaming activities may only occur in states where gaming is legal. Tribes in Utah may not open Class II or Class III operations. A 2008 government report emphasizes, “One final characteristic of gaming under IGRA should be noted because it is so often overlooked in the public conceptions of Indian gaming: Indians do not have the right to offer gaming. Tribes do. Indian gaming is not a ‘privilege for one group of citizens.’ It is a power of government.” The myth about Indian casino riches goes: every tribe has a casino in which every Indian has a job—if the Indian wants one. But why would the Indian want to work when every Indian gets lots of money from casino profits? Here are the facts: Not every tribe has a casino. In 2012, NIGC reported out of 566 federally recognized tribes, only 246 tribes operate 460 gaming facilities in 28 states. Thus, 320 tribes have no gaming operations. The rural and unpopulated locations of many Native nations discourage gaming. Not every Indian has a job. In January 2009, Native unemployment was 13.9% - greater than the national rate of 7.8%. Many tribes operate facilities primarily to generate employment. The total jobs provided by Indian gaming nationwide is 628,000. But up to 75% of those jobs go to non-Indian employees. Not every Indian gets money from casino profits. Tribal nations must follow strict rules. Per IGRA, gaming profits may be used only: to fund tribal government operations or programs; provide for the general welfare of its members; promote tribal economic development; for charitable donations; and help fund operations of local government agencies. The tribe must use gaming revenue to improve its infrastructure, develop education opportunities and provide social programs for its people. Even if tribes want to distribute gaming revenue in per capita payments to tribal members, they must

TRIBAL NEWS

first develop a revenue-allocation plan, which must be approved by the Interior Secretary. The idea that money flows freely into Native hands is fantasy. Approximately 70 tribes give per capita payments from gaming revenue, ranging from hundreds to many thousands of dollars. Very few distribute large sums—Foxwoods stopped. [Editor’s Note: Foxwoods is a resort and casino in Ledyard, Connecticut on the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Reservation.] A 2008 report finds tribes don’t like to disburse cash, contending “large per capita payments lead to citizen dependence on tribal governments, undermine the work ethic, and discourage young citizens from finishing their education.” So where do the profits go? The scope of Indian gaming is exaggerated. There are resorttype casinos, but many facilities are just trailers with bingo. In 2009 those facilities generated gross revenue of $26.5 billion, 21% of gaming nationwide. But Indian gaming also generated $6.2 billion in federal taxes, $2.4 billion in state income, and $100 million in local income through payroll, sales taxes and direct revenue sharing through government agreements. And, I’m surprised that people seldom question how any tribe pulled millions out of its back pocket one day to start a casino. IGRA stipulates that no entity other than a tribe may possess an ownership interest, but there are layers of lenders. For example, the Mohegan Sun recently refinanced $1 billion in debt; Foxwoods is working to refinance $2.3 billion. But before lenders get paid, think about all those tribal-state compacts. Connecticut receives 25% of the “hold” of slot machines, i.e. the money left after winnings are paid. In January, Connecticut’s share came to $24.8 million, and in the past two decades, more than $6 billion from Indian casinos. Pennsylvania requires 55% of the hold. Former NIGC chairman Harold Monteau states that only about 10% of tribes receive the majority of the revenue. Just how many hands are in the money jar? Gaming is an indigenous legacy, but Indian gaming is a very political issue that is terribly misunderstood outside of Indian country, and not well understood within it. Take the time to educate someone else about Indian gaming so we can dispel the myth of Indian casino riches. $

FUN FACTS

Gift Giving Superstitions There are many superstitions and legends surrounding gift giving and gamblers are the most superstitious people in the world. So, if you’re scurrying to do some last minute gift shopping for the holidays, make sure the gift you give has good luck associated with it!

Gifts Associated With Bad Luck When giving the gift of a purse, wallet, piggy bank, safe, or anything that is meant to hold money, you must put cash or currency (even just a single penny will suffice) in it to bring good luck to the recipient. It’s the gesture, not the amount! The reason behind this superstition is by putting money into the purse it will never be empty! When giving cash money, you should always give in odd amounts such as $5, $11, $21, $51, $101, and so on. Chocolates, wines, and fruits are considered to be good luck gifts. They symbolize very good fortune because they represent the wish that the recipient will have a sweet life. Gifts of fresh baked cookies and breads are thoughtful presents for new homeowners as these treats guarantee there will always be a full pantry and no one in the house will ever go hungry. Gifts of seeds to new homeowners symbolize the growing of the family in that home. Gifts of objects that are considered lucky such as frogs, pigs, ladybugs, horseshoes, and four leaf clovers will all bring good fortune to the recipient. It is believed that gemstones have living energy and that good luck is part of the energy of many stones. The Aventurine and Tourmaline stones are considered to bring good fortune in money matters and the Emerald for matters of the heart. $

36 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2012 | azgamingguide.com

Many cultures around the world believe gifts such as clocks, watches, candles, and the like are bad luck as they symbolize time running out and impending death. Gifts associated with negative events should be avoided as well. In other words, a handkerchief should never be given since it is used when crying or during sad moments. An umbrella makes a bad gift too since it is used during gloomy weather. Knives should not be given because the superstition is that the bond will soon be cut or broken. Pairs of shoes should also never be given as gifts because the belief is that the person who receives the shoes will soon walk away and part company.

In addition to top-notch technology, guest comfort was one of the chief priorities in the conception of the new room. There is both a smoking section and an enclosed glass nonsmoking section available. It boasts a full service kitchen, large flat screen televisions and a four-sided arena-sized scoreboard. Special attention was also paid to the décor in the room to pay homage to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. “As an enterprise of the Salt River PimaMaricopa Indian Community, it was important that the Bingo Hall honor the culture of the Community,” said Ramon Martinez, Director of Public Relations for Casino Arizona. “The cultural details are apparent throughout the room, from the art on the walls to the paint on the ceiling.” The Bingo Hall showcases a new collection of art created and submitted by members of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Among the 20 pieces included in the collection are paintings, textiles and historic artifacts. Further, the Community Great Seal was painted on the ceiling, prominently featured with a dazzling light display. The Bingo Hall is the latest addition to Casino Arizona’s overall renovation project. The accomplished architecture firm, Seaver Franks Architects AIA, was inspired by the Southwest’s rich history and environment in the design of the Hall. While contracting industry leader, Kitchell Corporation, completed the construction phase, which began December 2011. To celebrate the opening, Casino Arizona launched the Bingo Bonus Days promotion. Now through December 7, registered Player Rewards Club members who play bingo will automatically be entered into daily $1,000 drawings. On December 8, one lucky player will win a brand new Ford Focus. Casino Arizona’s Bingo Hall is open daily. Evening games run from 6:30–10pm. Matinee games run Saturday and Sunday 12:30-3:30pm L8 Nite Bingo offers an exciting nightclub feel every Friday and Saturday night from midnight to 2am and will feature a live DJ. $

BINGO FUN FACTS

playing with an electronic bingo machine in which the system can read up to 2000 cards at a time or traditionally by using a dauber and paper cards.

In the 1500’s, the Italians created a game called “Lo Giuco de Lotto,” which was very similar to the Bingo game we know and love today! The first game of “Bingo” in the United States was played on December 17, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia at a county fair! At that time, the game was actually called “Beano” because it was played with beans. A toy salesman from New York, Edwin Lowe, watched the game being played at the fair and was excited by how involved the participants were. He brought the game back to New York and its popularity soared. Whenever players yelled out “Beano” it sounded so close to “Bingo” that it was eventually just referred to by that name. Perhaps this is why the month of December is recognized as “National Bingo Month?” 96% of Bingo players have won a game at least once! Bingo is not your grandmother’s game anymore! Both males and females of all different ages enjoy playing Bingo. Today, 30% of Bingo players are 35 years old or younger. Columbia University Mathematics Professor, Carl Leffler, came up with 6,000 Bingo cards all with non-repeating numbers, but unfortunately went insane in the process. Several surveys have shown the number one reason for playing Bingo is for personal enjoyment and the social interaction. Winning money comes in fifth. Americans spend more than $90 million on Bingo cards every week. Playing Bingo is good for your health! One study from Cornell University concluded that people who played Bingo fared much better at certain mental activities than those who did not play the game. Numerous studies have also shown that Bingo players are happier and have a better overall satisfaction with life. There are 1,474,200 unique Bingo card combinations that can occur in 75-ball Bingo. Nearly 8% of the world’s population plays Bingo on a regular basis. The largest Bingo game recorded in history had 60,000 players and took place at New York’s Teaneck Armory. 10,000 more people were turned away.

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN

LOSING MONEY AT THE CASINO By Sami Becker

Not The Biggest Complaint From Gamblers

Recently, a casino executive asked our publisher what the majority of casino visitors complain about when they write in their rants to us. He mistakenly assumed that most gamblers are just disgruntled about losing money at the casino, so he was shocked to hear that “losing” is actually not a complaint we hear very often. In fact, nearly all casino enthusiasts understand that gambling is a form of entertainment that involves a high level of risk and most are responsible enough to bring money they can have fun with but still afford to lose. Actually, it’s smoking that continues to be the hottest discussion topic amongst our readers. Those that don’t light up object to the smoke-filled casino environments, the small (if any) nonsmoking areas, and what they say are rude and inconsiderate smokers who aren’t careful where they ash and which direction the smoke is drifting. There are also plenty of smokers who write in to us who don’t appreciate the dirty, belittling looks and the condescending treatment they receive from those around them who don’t smoke.

Here are the top five complaints we received in 2012: #1. Smoking. A popular sentiment is that casinos need to focus on better air quality and have larger non-smoking areas. Many people also don’t understand why most poker rooms are nonsmoking while the majority of slot floors aren’t. #2. Employees. Many players expect a higher level of customer service from casino employees and don’t appreciate when they act superior, rude or disinterested. #3. Slots. Slot players feel that the manufacturers are designing games that are extremely volatile, have large minimum wagers, and take too long to trigger a bonus event. #4. Players. Casino patrons don’t appreciate other players who are obnoxious, intoxicated, and disruptive. #5. Comps. Players feel they deserve more complimentary offers (such as free rooms and concert tickets) based on their play. $
