M

y team and I always love visiting Cocopah Casino & Resort in Somerton, Arizona just outside Yuma. The casino staff is friendly and welcoming and you’ll always find a brand new slot or a favorite classic ready for you to play. Now that they’ve opened a non-smoking slot room, I’m going to be planning more trips to Cocopah Casino & Resort. I like the selection of games available in the room, and the space is big enough so guests don’t feel like they’ve been stuffed in a closet! During my last trip to Cocopah Casino Resort, I walked in with several hundred dollars as my bankroll and walked out way ahead after playing Video Keno, Video Poker, the original Cleopatra by IGT, Chili Gold by ITS and a fifth game I won’t mention by name as it nearly decimated my win. I had a lot of fun and I can’t wait to go back! Make sure to visit Cocopah Casino & Resort and you just might bump into me! Please visit our Facebook at: Facebook.com/ArizonaGamingGuide, become part of our community and share your thoughts and experiences with others who also love the same casino games you do. You can sign up for our e-newsletter and find current and back issues of the Arizona Gaming Guide on our website at AZGamingGuide.com. Let me know what you think of this issue and have fun! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK Q: I know in other articles you have stated Video Poker uses a random number generator. But what I would like to know is how the numbers are drawn for Video Keno. Also, we know the odds for a Royal Flush are [approximately] 40,000 to one but what are the odds for a six out of six or a seven out of seven on Video Keno. It seems like the number I need to make a six always comes up as the first number on my next hand! Ken Menez, Maricopa, Arizona A: Ken, thanks for your great question! Any Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) in any casino will use a random number generator to determine outcomes. This is true for Slot Machines, Video Poker, Video Keno, Electronic Blackjack, Electronic Roulette, etc. The way this occurs is the same regardless of the game or manufacturer. The internal operating system of the EGM has an algorithm which can return a random number when prompted. A random number is selected the instant a player presses a bet button on the EGM. Depending on the game, one or more random numbers may be selected. A Slot Machine with five reels will require five random numbers. A Video Keno game requires twenty random numbers as twenty “balls” are drawn from a selection of eighty numbers (1-80). Caveman Keno will require 23 random numbers as that game uses twenty standard balls and three special balls indicated after the first twenty have been displayed. Video Keno is a great game. In our opinion Video Keno is a good casino game to play because a player can easily figure out what the return to player percentage and the house hold percentage is on the game by looking at the pay table in the help screen. Our team really liked hearing you appear to enjoy playing six and seven spot Video Keno. The wins are frequent, for a keno game, and substantial. Members of our team have gotten much enjoyment and a substantial boost to their bankrolls in hitting seven out of seven spots for a 1 to 7,000 payoff! Show me a slot machine where wagering one quarter will pay the player $1,750 for hitting a seven out of seven! And, the player also knows the exact house hold through some simple math! To help you in your Video Keno quest, we’d like to give you the return tables (see page 8) with the common pay tables at the casinos and the odds of hitting each combination for six spot and seven spot Video Keno. What is noticeable is the odds of hitting seven out of seven are essentially the odds of hitting a royal flush in Video Poker! About 1 in 41,000! The odds for a Royal Flush in Video Poker fluctuate slightly depending on the particular game played and your skill with optimal strategy. But the payout on a seven out of seven is 1 to 7,000! With Video Poker, the Royal Flush pays only 1 to 800 and then only with

max bet (usually 5 credits) for a total win of 4,000 credits! The first table depicts the highest return to player pay tables for six and seven spot Video Keno games we are aware of that are available to players in casinos. Note the Win column listing the win associated with hitting each number of spots. The Odds column presents a number to be read as “1 in (the number listed)” always. For example, hitting a win of 22 for a five out of seven, the Odds column lists the number 111.76 in the first table. The odds are 1 in 111.76 for that outcome. The second table lists all the common pay tables available to players for a Six spot Video Keno game in casinos. When playing Video Keno, always look at the available pay table and compare it against our chart so you’ll know the house hold you are playing against. Take time to look at multiple Video Keno games across the casino floor. Don’t assume they all have the same pay table! Also, don’t assume one card Video Keno, four card Video Keno, and Multi-Card Video Keno even on the same machine at your favorite casino will have the same pay table! Our team routinely finds a variety of Video Keno pay tables available on the same game and across games on the casino floor. In addition, you’ll obviously find the better pay tables (lower house hold) on higher denomination machines. If you play Video Keno often and intend on playing it for the rest of your lifetime (i.e. over time or the mathematical long run) always take the time to find and play the lowest house hold pay table! The third table lists all the common pay tables available to players for a Seven spot Video Keno game in casinos. As far as your last comment about the number you needed being the first number drawn on the next game, all we can reply to you is that we know how you feel. Experiencing those events ourselves has not been fun over the years. But, our human brains crave order and an explanation to all random events. Unfortunately, in the case of Video Keno (Video Poker, Slot Machines, and all other casino games), a mathematically random event is truly random! To shed light on the condition of needing to have reasons behind random events, let’s look at rats. Specifically, two sets of rats (well, more than two sets as this experiment has been repeated many times to verify the results, but you get the point!). The first set was given a lever to press. Once pressed, a food pellet was released. The rats in this first group happily pressed (Continued on page 8)

the lever, each time receiving their food pellet. One day, the researchers removed the food pellet reward. Very quickly, all the rats in the first group stopped pressing the lever, permanently. The second set of rats was given a lever to press. Once pressed, randomly several food pellets were released. Sometimes none, sometimes one, sometimes two, etc. I hope this doesn’t sound too familiar? The rats in this second group pressed the levers

continually to, randomly, receive the reward of one or more food pellets or none at all (do you know where this is going?) One day, the researchers removed the food pellet reward completely, as with the first group of rats. Unfortunately, the rats in this second group continued pressing the lever, sometimes thousands of times per day! This experiment makes a strong statement about random behavior and how powerful an influence it can be for the reward center of the brain! $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED... Why Casino Dealers Have Split Personalities?

I

think a lot of players like table games because they get to talk to the dealer. Well, that and the group-think comradery among the players to beat the dealer. Of course, that’s why dealers go a little cuckoo at work. They really want to be nice, but they deal with demanding bosses, hundreds of rules, and players who praise and tip them one minute and curse them the next. That kind of behavior is going to turn the screws on even the heartiest card-pitching soul. I know, you didn’t think dealers had souls, but they do. And, they wind up with a split personality trying to keep their bosses and the players happy at the same time, which is impossible. So, if you’ve ever noticed a bead of sweat on your dealer’s brow, it’s there because they are constantly juggling. And, it’s not three soft tennis balls they’ve got in the air. It’s a bowling ball, an egg, and a chainsaw coming at them backwards. But hey, it’s a living. Follow The Rules Dealers have a bunch of rules to follow when working. Unfortunately, the rules change, depending on which game they are on, what side-bet is available, and which boss is watching. Some supervisors want more hands dealt and less talk, some bosses want more conversation from their dealers, and some want dealers to stop calling out every action like making change and handing-in player cards. Still, dealers must follow the rules and they don’t make them up. When they ask you to do something a specific way, it’s almost always because they have been told to make sure you do. So, unless they ask you to do something silly like go home and watch Gilligan’s Island, wash the garage or paint the dog, trust me, they are trying to help.

aren’t to be trusted. But don’t touch your bets after you get your cards. That’s a no-no. And when you cut the decks for a new shoe, cut at least one deck from the end, unless they say you must cut at least a deck and a half. Finally, keep in mind that the dealers are programmed, I mean, taught, not to allow players to touch the cards when they play. Except on the poker games, then you can touch your cards, but just with one hand. Oh, on Pai Gow you can use both hands because those seven cards are hard to hold with one hand. Plus, you’ve got to make two playable hands. So go ahead and use both hands. Clear enough? $

The dealer isn’t being a jerk when they move your double-down bet to their right-side of your original wager. They have to. The original bet stays on the dealer’s left. Always. It’s the same thing when they make you put your cash, chips, or your ID on the table and refuse to take it from your hand. The bosses don’t want anything passed hand-to-hand. Not that you

BETTING SYSTEMS Don’t Fall For Tall Tales!

I

receive a lot of e-mail about "Betting Systems." Plain and simple there has never been a betting system devised that can mathematically overcome the house advantage on any casino game. In fact, they can't even make a dent in it. The bottom line is that dice and roulette have no memory. Each toss of the dice and every spin of the roulette wheel is independent of all past events. Just because you see black come up on the roulette wheel six times in a row does not make red any more likely to come up on the next spin, the odds are always the same. The longer you play, the closer you will get to the expected outcome for that particular game, a loss. The biggest gambling myth is that an event that has not occurred recently is overdue and thus is more likely to come up. This is the basis for most of the betting and playing systems that you see other magazines and, unfortunately, all over the internet making wild claims. For example, one roulette system says that if you see red come up three times in a row that you should load up on black for the upcoming spin. The problem is that the previous three spins have nothing to do with the upcoming spin, it is completely independent and the probability of red or black remains the same.

The system that I get asked about the most is the Martindale System. This is a system where the player doubles their bet after losing. For example, if you bet $1 and lose your next bet is $2, if you lose that your next bet is $4, if you lose that $8, if you lose that bet $16, and so on. The idea behind this system is that by doubling your bet after a loss you would win enough to cover all past losses plus a unit. The problem with this system is that it is easier than you think to lose a lot of bets in a row and quickly run out of betting money or reach the table max bet. Other gambling magazines and the internet are full of people selling betting systems with the promise of huge wins over the casino at games of chance. These salesmen are the modern-day equivalent of the old wonder tonic salesman out of the old west. You should never spend one penny on a gambling system. Every time one has been put to the test in a computer simulation it has failed and failed miserably. They always show the same ratio of losses to money as flat betting. Gambling systems have been around as long as gambling has existed and not one has ever been proven to work. If you want to have an edge over the casino you can do it by learning to count cards in the game of blackjack. It takes a lot of work to master but it is mathematically proven to overcome the casino edge. By assigning a plus value to smaller cards and a minus value to the tens and aces it gives you the composition of the remaining cards to be played, you know if there is a surplus of tens or a surplus of small cards yet to be dealt. With this information you know if you or the house has the advantage on the upcoming hand and you select your bet size accordingly. Additionally, there are 43 changes in playing strategy over basic strategy. This gives you a more accurate way to play the hands. By playing this way instead of the casino having a 0.57% advantage over the basic strategy player, you have a long-term advantage of about 1.5%. You must play perfectly in order to have this long-term advantage and it takes practice but in the long run it is worth it. $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. Casino Del Sol Constructs Gigantic 11ft. Coco-themed Gingerbread House Made Entirely From Scratch

National Congress Of American Indians Youth Commission Hosts Annual Youth Leadership Awards

Casino Del Sol, the Sol of Tucson, is in construction mode lately, and it’s not just for their new hotel. Casino Del Sol’s Executive Chef Ryan Clark and Executive Pastry Chef Gina Skelton have teamed up to bring their culinary skills to the homebuilding front with the construction of a holiday gingerbread house unlike any other. Standing taller than 11 feet, the lifesize gingerbread house was created entirely out of scratch using yummies and other items from the baking and pastry kitchen at Casino Del Sol. Almost two months of creation, 120 hours of decoration, and possibly a few cavities went into the making of the impressive display. The ingredients used to create this massive and entirely edible house include: 266 pounds of flour, 2 1/2 pounds of ginger, 2 1/2 pounds of cinnamon, 1 1/4 pounds of cloves, 1 pound of nutmeg, 27 dozen eggs, 20 pounds of butter, 80 pounds of honey, 120 pounds of sugar, 152 pounds of royal icing, and 100 pounds of assorted candy! The theme for this year’s house is Coco, a Disney movie based on the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Think bright, beautiful colors, sugar skulls, and festive elements. Members from the Pascua Yaqui Tribal youth group lended a sticky hand in decorating this year’s masterpiece. “This is quite an ambitious project, and by far the largest dessert I’ve made in my career thus far,” said Casino Del Sol’s Executive Chef Ryan Clark. “I’m eager for the community to see the final product and experience the holiday season come to life in a special way at Casino Del Sol.” Casino Del Sol will also be collecting holiday gift donations for children in need. There will be a gift drop-off area next to the gingerbread house through December 21. The donated gifts will benefit Casa de los Niños and Tribal Foster Care. The awe-inspiring gingerbread house is a must-see and will remain on display near the hotel lobby for viewing throughout the holiday season through January 2, 2019. Visit CasinoDelSol.com for info. $

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Youth Commission hosted their annual NCAI Youth Luncheon recently as part of the 75th Annual NCAI Convention and Marketplace in Denver, Colorado. National Indian Gaming Association Chairman Ernie Stevens, Jr., presented the NCAI Youth Leadership Awards to Rory Wheeler of the Seneca Nation of New York and Mikah Carlos who is from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Arizona.

30 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2018 | azgamingguide.com

Mikah spoke about her role in mentorship with the NCAI Youth Commission, “I like to do this work because it makes me feel good and I have a passion for making sure that the youth coming behind me have the person that I didn’t have when I was growing up. I want to be a person for other people.” While Mikah and Rory were presented the NCAI Youth Leadership Award, Stevens also took the opportunity to recognize all of the young ambassadors nominated for the award, bringing them all on stage to present a Chairman Leadership award for each of them. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

WHY A POSITIVE ATTITUDE MATTERS! 13 (Yes...That’s On Purpose!) Reasons Which Impact Your Life

H

ere are 13 reasons why positive attitudes change lives.

1. You will make the best of every situation. No matter where you are, who you're with or what you're doing, you are able to have an open mind, appreciate the little things and fully take in every experience of this beautiful life. 2. You won't hold grudges. It's difficult to let go of hurt feelings and to forgive someone wholeheartedly. But with a positive attitude you will find it's easier to forgive. 3. You will take care of others. You listen to and respect others profoundly. You see the good in everyone you meet and try to help them see the good in themselves.

12. You will see the world and yourself differently. The sun will shine a little brighter if you think positively. You will feel brand new. Instead of judging where you are in your life and constantly thinking ahead, trust that you are exactly where you need to be right now. 13. You will be more open to new opportunities & situations. This is especially impactful for your luck at the casino. As your life, attitude, and outlook change towards positivity, your luck will be increased as a result. Moving away from a negative outlook in all areas of your life, naturally your thoughts about losing at the casino will fade away and be replaced with a more positive outlook about your casino experience. $

4. You will help others. The power of positivity makes this world a better place. 5. You will brighten someone's day without even knowing it. You may not realize that you changed someone's day with just a smile. A positive attitude creates a chain of positivity. 6. You will practice self love. You will devote special time to take care of yourself and discover what you truly want in this life. 7. You will feel driven, motivated & excited about everything. Positivity really is a beautiful thing! It can change your life! 8. You will look for the best in others. You don't judge a book by its cover. You try to really get to know someone and find the beauty in who they are. 9. You won't get sick as often. Expect less sick days when you think positively. 10. You will be able to get through a difficult time. A positive attitude can help you see that there is hope and love waiting for you just around the corner. 11. You won't compare yourself to others. You know that comparing yourself to another person is nothing but trouble. You will love who you are, do the best that you can do and work on discovering what makes you happy.
