PLAYERS TALK By Mark Novak
QUESTIONS FROM OUR INBOX How Do We Count Slots? … And Crappy Video Poker Pay Tables
Q: Hi. I have a couple questions about your magazine. First, where you list the number of slots in each casino, I’m guessing that is the number of seats available for a single player. This does not count slots that have multiple games available, such as 4 or 8 different games, or does it? Second, you discuss how crappy pay tables can kill your odds in Video Poker. I’ve read all about this for years in many publications, as well as yours, and I completely agree. One question, where in all of Arizona is there a 25 cent 9/6 Jacks or Better (JOB) game? Last time I saw one anywhere was in Reno 6 or 7 years ago. I don’t think I’ve seen anything better than 8/5 anywhere – including Laughlin. They don’t get much better in a dollar denomination either. Any comment? Jeff Emerson – Phoenix, Arizona A: Hi Jeff! Those are all fantastic questions you ask. And, thank you for being a long-time fan. To answer your first question, the number of “slots” listed next to each casino in the directory on page 38 is the number of Electronic Gaming Machines (EGMs) available in each casino. That number includes every slot machine, video poker and video keno unit, and any Electronic Table Game (ETG). Even if the slot, video poker, video keno, or ETG has multiple game themes available for play, they count as one unit. However, ETGs are counted a little differently than you might think. If an ETG uses one game (like a roulette wheel) and multiple player terminals, that is counted as one EGM, even if there are 50 player terminals. If an ETG uses one game (like a dice roller) and has only one player terminal which can place bets on that dice roller to replicate the game of Craps, that is counted as one EGM. Plus, just because one particular casino has 800 slots (actually EGMs) doesn’t mean that’s the total number of slots (sorry, EGMs!) they could offer their customers. As all of Arizona’s casinos are owned by the Native American Tribes with land in the State, they are allotted a certain number of EGMs based on a formula whose output can change every year. So a Tribe may actually have the right to offer even more EGMs than they cur-
rently do in their casino. Plus, there are several non-gaming Tribes in Arizona which currently include the Havasupai Indian Tribe, the Hopi Tribe, the Hualapai Indian Tribe, the KaibabPaiute Tribe, the San Juan Southern Paiute, and the Zuni Tribe all of whom have “Gaming Device Allocations” which can be leased to Gaming Tribes with established casinos. Why? These Non-Gaming Tribes have chosen to not operate casinos, perhaps because their reservations are quite remote and may lack the infrastructure to support the 24-7-365 operational requirements of a casino. Slots, video poker, video keno and ETGs are all EGMs according to the Tribal—State Gaming Compact here in Arizona. Different states may report the number of EGMs installed in their casinos differently, or not at all! For fun, you can head over to the Nevada Gaming Commission/Control Board’s reports page where EGMs are split up by denomination! Just type (or click if you are reading this online) the address below into your favorite browser. https://gaming.nv.gov/about/gaming-revenue/information/ To answer your second question, our collective chances of finding a 9/6 JOB video poker unit in ANY denomination here in Arizona are about as likely as us finding the most elusive of all mammals in North America, the Arizona Jackalope! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other video poker games which approach the mythical 100% (or higher) return to player value here in Arizona! However, our staff has multiple contacts across Arizona who work in the Slot Departments of casinos all around the state. So, I wonder when one of those contacts might decide to go for a competitive advantage and just go ahead and install a 9/6 JOB video poker in a $5, $10, or even $25 denomination (now that the wager limits on EGMs increased when the 2020 Tribal-State Gaming Compacts were negotiated and agreed upon) and then advertise the heck out of it! Look, a true 9/6 JOB is still “only” 99.54% return to player when played PERFECTLY at max bet. So, in the $5 denomination the house hold is $0.11 per hand. The $25 denomination earns the casino $0.56 per hand. And, let’s just be honest, how many players know optimal strategy? $

Cosmic Wheel Link By Everi
W
e had the opportunity to play Cosmic Wheel Link, a brand new slot from Everi, before it makes its debut here in Arizona. If you see this game on your favorite casino’s floor, play it! If you don’t, ask for it to be installed! You are in for a treat as the slot features two wheel-centric base games – Moon and Sun – that leverage a classic hold & spin and free games bonus. Players experience the hold & spin while building a custom wheel during the bonus as symbols land on the screen, prizes on the wheel or additional wheel spins are awarded. This great, new slot game also presents a unique accumulator in the base game that may randomly award the hold & spin bonus. Look for the game to be installed in a user-selectable penny or two-cent denomination. If the slot has more denominations, expect the number of pay lines to decrease as you move up in denomination. At the lowest denoms, you’ll play 50 lines, then 25 at five and ten cents, and finally 5 pay lines in the $1 and $2 denoms. Everi and the other manufacturers we are featuring this month have more cool games coming our way which we’ll cover in the February 2025 issue. So stay tuned! $

NFL Triple Score By Aristocrat Gaming
T
hree’s a crowd pleaser when triple metamorphic meets Triple Score! You want more? You've got NFL Triple Score! It's modeled after the wildly successful Bao Zhu Zhao Fu family and takes the best features of NFL Slots like team selectability and matching graphics, symbols, and NFL clips! Players can trigger the Super Ultra, Super Double and Super Extra features individually, in pairs, or all together to increase the Cash-on-Reel values! Now that's teamwork! The Super Ultra feature boosts random Cash-on-Reel values. The Super Double feature splits Cash-on-Reel values into two symbols to help players more quickly unlock additional rows. The Super Extra feature resets the spin counter to 4 instead of 3 for additional chances at collecting Cash-on-Reel symbols. Finally, the Jackpot Kick feature is a feature-in-feature where players pick footballs to earn credit prizes and a chance at jackpots. At press time, there were only a very few places to play this game across the country. If you don’t see it on the casino floor, make sure to ask for it by talking to a slot attendant or a representative at the player’s club. More sneak peeks from Aristocrat in February! $

WHO’S THE BOSS? The Odds Of Course!
P
layers tend to forget that casinos rule when you enter their kingdom. It’s a fact. And while “The customer is always right” might work in retail, it doesn’t work when the casinos' inventory is cash! I’m not saying that you shouldn't speak up when there is an issue—casino managers in Arizona bend over backwards to accommodate—but casinos and dealers have rules that must be followed, so they are. And then there are those pesky odds. ODDS AND GAMING SYSTEMS Casino game odds are a good thing. The house can’t step in and change the odds while you are playing, so when things are going well, enjoy! Rushes happen; you should take advantage of them by raising your wagers and enjoying the ride! You haven’t changed the odds so pushing the boundaries, when possible, is excellent. And while you’re flying down the gaming highway, remember there will be a reckoning when you realize you’re the dragonfly, and the rush you feel is the draft from oncoming trucks. Avoiding the pain of splashing your chips across a wide windshield takes some finesse and determination. So, when you’re back to even or up big, allow yourself a trip to the cage with your winnings! Free will exists and it’s a good thing. Even if you count cards, the casino still has the odds in its favor unless you play a shoe game and vary your bet size accordingly. If you don’t count cards and want to play on a shuffle machine, go for it. Surprisingly, the odds are slightly better for the casual player on an automatic shuffler because all the Aces are constantly up for grabs. When many Aces have been used on a shoe game, the chances of making a Blackjack and getting 3 for 2 payoffs are greatly diminished. Is it worth watching and leaving a game in that case? Maybe. ARIZONA CASINOS EXPAND THEIR GAME OPTIONS I’ve always been a proponent of regularly playing games where I can win. I know the odds are against me but with new games like Baccarat and Craps readily available, Arizona casinos are offering a very tempting and tasty spread of low-odds games.
16 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2025 | azgamingguide.com
Statistically, you are twice as likely to hold your bankroll or even win at Blackjack, Spanish Blackjack, Craps, and Baccarat as you are in games like Three Card Poker, Let it Ride, and Mississippi Stud. That doesn’t make the latter bad games—you should play games you love—it’s just a combination of odds and each game's regular table hold. And to achieve those numbers, you’ll need to stick to Pass/Don’t Pass at Craps and avoid side bets on the other games! Also, remember that comp dollars aren’t based on whether you win or lose. They are based on a pre-programmed amount per minute of play at your average wager. If you bet $25 at Pai Gow or Blackjack, you’ll earn about $2.50 per hour. World Poker Tour and Let it Ride will earn you up to a buck an hour more. The tradeoff is the odds are higher, so it costs more to play. Three Card Poker will cost you even more per hour while earning the same comps, so weigh all your options at the casino and get the best bang for your time and your money! $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. He is also the proud father of four beautiful girls.
TABLE GAMES By TJ Jorgensen
ADVICE FOR YOUR BLACKJACK BANKROLL Know Which Plays Are The Bad Ones
T
he days of the $5 Blackjack tables disappeared from the casinos after the Pandemic except in a few rare cases. In fact, if you go to a casino you can expect to see mostly $15 minimum tables; some tables have even higher minimums. So the question becomes: how big of a bankroll do you need to play at theses higher limit tables? Without taking into consideration any other factors, if you want to play a $15 minimum Blackjack table, you need a bankroll of 20 bets or $300.00. However, the most important question you have to ask yourself is, can you afford to lose that much? If you decide to play, I suggest you learn a flawless and perfect basic strategy and do not play any side bets! Playing this way, your money will last longer and you will give yourself the best chance at walking out a winner. In the long run, you will be at a –0.57% disadvantage. This means that you will lose only about fifty-seven cents for every $100 put into play. Here are some bad plays I have seen players make lately that will make your bankroll disappear even quicker! So, please don’t let me see you making these mistakes: SPLITTING TENS While this is not the worst play you can make, it is a big mistake! 70% of all the money that you will win playing Blackjack comes from the hands of 20, and Ace—10. You will only receive the hand of 20, 1 in 9 hands on average. Once you split the hand you have a 1 in 3 chance of drawing another 10. More than likely, you are taking a winning hand and making it into two losing hands. Not to mention the negative reaction you will get from the other players at your table! STANDING ON A SIXTEEN AGAINST A SEVEN Hitting a 16 against a dealer up card of 7 is a 12 to 5 underdog to win if you hit it, considerably less if you stand. So, that's why you must hit it! STANDING ON ACE—SIX A lot of players stand when they receive an Ace and a six, thankful to have 17! A player hand of 17 is a losing hand in the long run against every dealer’s up card except a six. That's why you never stand on Ace—six; either hit it or double it!
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2025 | azgamingguide.com
DOUBLING A HARD TWELVE (TEN & TWO) The probability of winning this hand is 34.92% or about 1 in 3 times. The probability of losing this hand is 60.10%. And, the probability of a push is 4.92%. You do the math! INSURANCE WITH BLACKJACK AGAINST AN ACE I have heard players say that this is the only sure bet in Blackjack and you must take the insurance. A sure bet, but a bad bet! Most players can’t live with themselves if they just sit tight and end up pushing when the dealer turns up a 10 in the hole, which happens 3 times out of 10. The curious thing is, these same people show no remorse at all over the other 7 out of 10 times they end up throwing away an extra half a bet. Some third grade arithmetic will show you that you make more money by winning 1.5 bets 7 out of 10 times than winning 1 bet 10 times. Taking even money on Blackjack against a dealer’s Ace is a mistake, and the bigger the bet the bigger the mistake. The problem a lot of recreational players have is that they can’t keep their emotions out of the game. They will get mad and start chasing losses with bigger bets and before they know what happened their bankroll is gone. That’s why it’s always a good idea to set a loss limit before you arrive at the casino. If you are a recreational player, remember that your bankroll is your entertainment money. You could go to the movies or out to dinner with that money but once it’s gone, your entertainment is over! $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for several decades. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the World Series Of Blackjack. His book “How To Become A Blackjack Jedi” is available in electronic and hard copy formats at Amazon.com.
COVER STORY
HON-DAH MEANS “WELCOME” But it also means Relaxation, White Mountains, Endless Excitement, Fine Dining and More! Why Resort To Anything Less? Hon-Dah Means Welcome My team and I took a trip recently to Hon-Dah Resort Casino and Conference Center in the heart of Arizona’s White Mountains and we had an amazing time. The warmth and coziness of the environment, with its rustic ambiance and southwestern charm, envelopes you from the moment you step through the doors. It’s not surprising that the word “Hon-Dah” in the Apache language means “welcome to my home.” There is a feeling of familiarity, a level of comfort, as if you are visiting friends or family. Although the excitement from the casino is definitely there, at the same time you feel a sense of peace and calm. The staff is incredibly friendly and even the patrons are polite and courteous.

Indian Pines also features daily buffets every day of the week, including a seafood buffet with crab legs every Friday starting at 4pm. In my opinion, a casino is not truly a casino if they don’t offer a buffet. Sorry. (Continued on page 22)

And, for all you Fry Bread lovers like me, you’ll definitely want to try the Apache Sunrise for breakfast which is a Fry Bread topped with beans, chorizo, eggs, lettuce, tomato and cheese and for lunch or dinner the Apache Burger which is two ¼ pound beef patties served on Fry Bread and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and cheddar cheese accompanied by a generous serving of fries (or your choice of various salads, soups and even vegetables). SEDONA SOUL STRETCH 10 Ancient Yoga Principles To Heighten Consciousness And Performance
Y
oga Teacher Johanna Mosca, author of Sedona Soul Stretch, is helping readers improve their quality of life using ten ancient Yoga principles including five social codes to excel with others and five personal practices to maintain internal peace. The Sedona Soul Stretch book helps guide everyday life decisions to achieve inner serenity and greater success at home and at work. After attending a Kripalu Yoga retreat weekend, Johanna fell in love with Yoga and signed up for the 200-hour Kripalu Yoga Teacher Certification. While camping in her Ford van on Mount Shasta, she did a Tarot Reading by lantern light and had an ‘aha’ moment to write a little book about the ancient Yoga principles with explanations, reflection questions, guided meditations, and affirmations. She wrote from her van and marketed the book and CD set to Yoga centers. Her 3,000 self-published Yoga Life books sold out, and she published another 5,000. Johanna’s latest book, Sedona Soul Stretch: 10 Ancient Yoga Principles to Heighten Consciousness and Performance, invites us to be part of her journey of greater awareness as she practices Yoga, faces the ups and downs of life, and leads activities for her Sedona Spirit Yoga and Hiking clients. Johanna presents a series of vignettes reflecting on these principles, times she fell short of practicing them, the rewards of adhering to them, and tips for how the reader can benefit from them. Captivated by the mystical beauty of Sedona, Johanna Maheshvari Mosca left her long-time job as an educational consultant in NYC in 1992, just after earning two licenses to serve as a principal of a NYC secondary school or a principal of an alternative high school. She took a vacation in Sedona, Arizona, where she camped out for fourteen months. Johanna enjoyed practicing Yoga on the red rocks so much that she founded Sedona Spirit Yoga & Vortex Journeys, which has now won Best-of-Sedona Awards for six consecutive years from 2019 to 2024. Johanna holds a Ph.D., from New York University, in Writing Research and Theory and has six Yoga and Meditation Certifications. She also earned two 300-hour program diplomas as a Master Practitioner of Richard Miller’s i-Rest Yoga Nidra Meditation (Inner Restoration Yoga Nidra) and a Practitioner of Alberto Villoldo’s Four Winds Shamanic Energy Medicine.

FOUR-COURSE ITALIAN DINNER Enjoy Italian Cuisine Paired With Tuscan Wines From Avignonesi Winery
T
he Grey Room at Bucky’s Casino is joining Classico Fine Wines & Spirits in presenting a gourmet, four-course Italian Dinner paired with four legendary Tuscan wines produced by the Avignonesi Winery of Italy. Dinner guests will experience authentic Italian cuisine enhanced by education and history of the Avignonesi wines, located in the Tuscany region of Italy, presented by Davide Visentin, the US Regional Manager for the winery. Dinner takes place January 14th at The Grey Room, served at 5:30 p.m. and offered at $75. Guests will first enjoy an Amuse-Bouche for Prosciutto and Melon with Balsamic Vinegar. This will be followed by the First Course consisting of a Crostini Di Fegato paired with Vino Mobile di Montepuiciano DOCG. For those of us whose Italian is a little rusty, the first course is Tuscan Chicken Liver pate on crusty bread. The second course will be a Mushroom Truffle Risotto (a rice dish) paired with Rosso di Montepuiciano DOC. The main event, the third course, will be a Veal Osso Bucco (cross-cut and slow-braised veal shanks) paired with a Desiderio Merlot. And finally, the fourth course, dessert, will feature a Schiacciata Almond Cake which will come paired with a Prosecco DOC Brut. Make sure to leave room!
Food & Beverage Manager Grant Routson (left) Director of Food & Beverage Alex Rivera, and Kitchen Manager William Caster (right) of Bucky’s and Yavapai Casinos.
Seating is limited, reservations with prepayment are required. Visit The Grey Room on the third floor at Bucky’s Casino to complete your reservation. Call 928-515-5222 for more information. And, we highly recommend visiting The Grey Room for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. The culinary team is performing at an incredibly high level with every dish presented beautifully and filled with flavor. We’ve loved Bucky’s Breakfast Sandwich in the morning which consists of two eggs cooked to order, cheddar cheese, choice of bacon, sausage, or ham, and a tomato served on a croissant with a choice of side. And, definitely don’t skip having the Potatoes O’Brien as a side! The Omelets are incredible as well. The Lunch salads are excellent, particularly the Spicy Chicken Wedge, which is essentially a cop-out as the rest of the menu is overwhelmingly fantastic. How can you choose between sandwiches like a London Broil, Spinach Artichoke Grilled Cheese and Chicken Pimento & Bacon? We dare you to find out for yourself! And then there’s the Dinner menu. We can’t decide what’s better, the Tomahawk Pork Chop or the Skirt Steak & Mushrooms. You decide. We definitely enjoyed the Fried Chicken Salad, the Artichoke Spinach Dip, and the Stuffed Steak Burger. Don’t worry, it wasn't all at once! Okay, maybe it was. Shh. $

GAMING NEWS Submitted by HMAPR on behalf of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Written by Michael Kintner, SVP & GM Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino
Honoring The Unsung Housekeeping & EVS Heroes At Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino When we think of casinos, visions of lively gaming floors, bustling restaurants, and dazzling lights come to mind. Yet behind the excitement lies a hardworking, often times invisible workforce that keeps every corner of the property spotless, safe, and inviting. These unsung heroes—members of the Housekeeping and Environmental Services (EVS) teams—work around the clock, often unnoticed, to make the casino experience exceptional for guests. Essential Roles, Essential People With shifts that start and end at all hours of the day and night, the dedicated team members from Housekeeping and EVS ensure that the property maintains a clean, sanitized, and welcoming environment. As a business that operates 24/7, where guests are constantly flowing through, it’s not an easy task. Floors must be swept and vacuumed, spills cleaned, bathrooms restocked, and high-contact surfaces sanitized. Without these tireless efforts, the casino would not be able to meet the high standards of cleanliness and safety that guests expect. Going Above and Beyond for Guest Safety and Comfort The importance of the Housekeeping and EVS teams extends beyond just cleanliness. They are also the first to notice and report any maintenance or safety issues, such as broken fixtures or misplaced furniture, that could pose risks. Their keen eyes and commitment to safety make them an integral part of the casino’s operations and security. People Of Dedication & Pride The work these individuals do requires a high level of resilience, professionalism, and dedication. Housekeepers and EVS team members take immense pride in their work, knowing that they contribute directly to creating a positive and memorable experience for guests. The EVS and Housekeeping teams at Harrah’s Ak-Chin consist of individuals who see their jobs as more than just work. For some, their role is a steppingstone to growth opportunities within the casino industry; for others, it is a stable, meaningful job that allows them to support their families. Their presence is the fabric of our family-style service and culture. A Call For Community Appreciation From the early risers to the night shift, these workers are the backbone of many businesses, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for all who visit. Next time you visit Harrah’s Ak-Chin, take notice of the sparkling floors and spotless

surfaces and remember the Unsung Heroes who make it possible. These hardworking individuals care for Harrah’s Ak-Chin as if it was their own and welcome guests as if they were welcoming them into their own home. A small gesture, a simple thank you, or a smile can go a long way in showing appreciation for these unsung heroes who deserve to be seen, acknowledged, and celebrated. It’s time the community recognized these essential workers who put in the effort, night and day, to keep Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino and all the other properties across the Valley running smoothly. Did You Know? Have you ever wondered why hotel checkout is at 11 a.m. and check-in isn’t until 4 p.m.? The answer lies in the remarkable effort it takes to clean, sanitize, and prepare each guestroom for the next visitor. On average, it takes about 30-40 minutes to ready a single room. Multiply that by 520 rooms, and you’ll see how much the hardworking Housekeeping team at Harrah’s Ak-Chin accomplishes daily! Their dedication ensures every stay is clean, comfortable, and enjoyable. Here’s a glimpse at what goes into creating an exceptional guest experience: From January through September 2024, Harrah’s Ak-Chin’s Housekeeping team cleaned an impressive 72,350 rooms. Each month, they make between 9,000 and 12,000 beds. The EVS team completes 240 cleanliness tasks per shift to maintain spotless public areas. Behind the scenes, the team has fluffed countless pillows, emptied bins, and turned over rooms with precision and care. It’s a testament to their efficiency and commitment to excellence. The Black Moods Talking Stick Resort March 14 & 15
ABBAFAB Mazatzal Hotel & Casino February 21
Arizona's Own Rock Revival: The Black Moods Unite Desert Roots with Timeless Sound! The Black Moods play raw, amplified rock & roll. Born in the Arizona desert and reared on stages across North America, the band delivers a modern update of a timeless sound, breathing fresh life into a familiar mix of electric guitars, anthemic hooks, and percussive stomp. The Black Moods’ three members—frontman/ guitarist Josh Kennedy, drummer Chico Diaz and bassist Jordan Hoffman—aren’t looking to reinvent the wheel. Instead, they’re piling into a vehicle that’s existed for decades, souping up the engine to suit their contemporary needs, and steering those wheels toward their own rock & roll horizon.
Do you love the music of ABBA? Then you do not want to miss this show!
The band formed in Tempe, Arizona. Inspired by local heroes like the Gin Blossoms and Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers — both of whom have become champions of The Black Moods, often tapping the group as a high-profile opening act — The Black Moods began building their audience the old-school way: by hitting the road. They toured heavily, promoting albums like their 2012 self-titled debut and 2016’s Medicine with gigs across the country. By the time “Bella Donna” hit the radio airwaves during the summer of 2018, The Black Moods’ fanbase had grown exponentially. The song became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, paving the way for the band’s biggest shows to date.
Having played to sold-out crowds across the U.S. and abroad, ABBAFAB is a stunning tribute to the music of ABBA featuring the sensational talents of some of TAD’s most talented and loved artists and musicians! This multimedia production is an incredible tribute to some of the greatest music produced in the 70s and 80s including monster hits such as Waterloo, Fernando, Honey Honey, Dancing Queen and countless others. From ABBA’s earliest hits to Mamma Mia, ABBAFAB will take you on a Technicolor journey that is unmatched. Their vocalists and musicians have toured the world as solo artists and band members and have come together to create the most entertaining ABBA tribute on the market today! ABBA’s record breaking string of hits has stood the test of time and continues to thrill audiences of all ages. With vocals and musicianship that are second to none, the ABBAFAB vibe is infectious! ABBA fans love it and new ABBA fans are created at every show. There’s no generation gap here, so let’s ALL party like its 1979! For tickets and more info visit MazatzalCasino.com. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN
ENTERTAINMENT AT ARIZONA’S CASINOS From Tribute Acts To Cover Bands, Don’t Miss Out On True Talent
R
ecently, I’ve had several conversations with fellow casino patrons who have all discussed casino entertainment with me. As a result of those discussions, I wanted to write an article in this month’s issue to kick off the New Year on a brand new, positive, “out with the old—in with the new” vibe. As my readers know, I love to play! That’s why I visit casinos. And, I’ll be the first to admit, I am highly focused. Some call me intense, others ambitious, but that’s how I approach life in every area, not just at the casino. So, no surprise, I don’t tend to pay attention to the entertainment available at casinos, even when there’s a live band playing. In fact, I tend to seek out the quietest, least frequented area of the casino. But, on top of all the recent discussions about casino entertainment with my fellow gamers, one of our team members could not stop raving about a local favorite band who frequently perform at Arizona’s casinos—Silhouette. In fact, they have been together as a band just as long (if not longer) as we have been publishing our magazine (that’s seventeen years, for the triviaminded readers out there). So, allow me to introduce this trio of experienced, energetic, and in-sync musicians. Silhouette, with Anthony Kinchion on Lead Guitar, Steven Johnson on Keyboards, and Cornelius Bishop on Vocals is vibrant and versatile performing Jazz, Motown, Soul, R&B, Funk, Rock, Top 40, and all kinds of contemporary hits. Go see them perform! They put on a fantastic show. Their upcoming casino schedule includes: Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on February 12. Talking Stick Resort on January 10 & 25 and February 1, 21 & 22. We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort on January 4 and February 28. Make sure to check out their full performance schedule at Silhouette-Band.com or on Facebook (SILHOUETTE.AZ).
Silhouette—Steven Johnson (left), Anthony Kinchion, Cornelius Bishop (right)
But wait! There’s more! Our staff has thoroughly enjoyed the sounds of countless other bands (tribute & cover) over the years who perform at Arizona’s casinos. So if you are looking to take a break from the action of casino games, make sure to check out the entertainment schedule at your favorite casino. Or, might I suggest, become a true fan and follow the band around the state from one casino to another! As my readers know, I’ve always been an advocate for trying something new. So, who knows? The band you follow for their music might just introduce you to your new favorite place to play! Looking at the month of January alone, there is plenty of live music to choose from at Casino Arizona, Casino Del Sol, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, Hon-Dah Resort Casino, Paradise Casino, Quechan Casino Resort, Talking Stick Resort, and We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort, just to name a few. In addition to catching a show from Silhouette, in January I’m thinking about listening to the AC/DC tribute act at Casino Arizona and Blue Öyster Cult at We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort. In February, I may go out of state, but still to a casino, to get my entertainment fix in. And in March, I see The Black Moods are playing at Talking Stick Resort. I just might have to go check them out as well, especially since they are a local band. If you have a “shout out” for your favorite band or entertainment experience at an Arizona casino, please let me know! Until next month, Have Fun & Win Big! $

’Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house, Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies I’d nibbled, the eggnog I’d taste’ At the holiday parties had gone to my waist. When I got on the scales, there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber), I’d remember the marvelous meals I’d prepared: The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared. The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese, And the way I’d never said, “No thank you, please.” As I dressed myself in my husband’s old shirt, And prepared once again to battle with dirt, I said to myself, as only I can, “You can’t spend a winter disguised as a man!” So, away with the last of the sour cream dip. Get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip. Every last bit of food that I like must be banished, ’Til all the additional ounces have vanished. I won’t have a cookie—not even a lick. I’ll only just chew on a long celery stick. I won’t have hot biscuits, or cornbread, or pie, I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry. I’m hungry, I’m grouchy, can’t fit through the door, But isn’t that what January is for? Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet! (Author Unknown)
