PLAYERS TALK Q: Aren’t all the casinos owned by the Indians here in Arizona? Why can’t the casinos get together and make sure they all have the same slots for us to play? This should be so easy and it’s so annoying when I can’t find all the games I like to play at [a casino] but I really want to play them! Magdalena Garcia – Tucson, AZ A: Magdalena, in Arizona there are 15 individual Native American Tribes that operate over 20 casinos on their own or they have an outside company run the casino for them. As you can imagine, this automatically creates a competitive environment. As a result, casinos are not going to make the purchasing of slot machines a collaborative process! Even if two or more casinos are operated by the same tribe, or by the same company on their behalf, there are no guarantees about the composition of the slot floor in terms of the games they offer. Each casino will ultimately make their own decisions about which slots to offer their patrons as every casino is unique in many different ways; all of which affect the slot floor. Q: I recently picked up one of your issues at Cliff Castle Casino. I’ve got a slot machine in my home and after reading the instructions it says that the payouts are adjustable by resetting a certain switch. My question is: If I can adjust my machine for more or less payouts, can the casinos also set their machines the same way and do they? Is there a way to get your magazine online each month? I do plan on reading your magazine each month from now on either by getting an issue at the casino or online. Thank you. D. Malnati – Wickenburg, Arizona The answer to your first question regarding slot machine payouts is YES! Just like you, the casinos can set their machines to various different payback settings. However, before casinos change the settings on their games, they must notify the Arizona Department of Gaming and document the changes. A request for a change must be submitted to the Department 30 days in advance and inspectors need to come out and verify the new settings. Employees from the casino, the Tribal Gaming Agency, and the Arizona Department of Gaming all need to be present when changes to the games are made. It’s just not as easy as many people believe for a casino to “tighten” or “loosen” their games. A strict process needs to be adhered to and several people from various different departments and regulatory agencies need to be involved. This is why many casinos don’t change their settings after the initial percentages have been chosen when the games are first installed! To answer your second question, you can read and enjoy our publication in several different ways! 1. As you know, you can pick up free copies of our magazines in casinos all across Arizona as well as in non-gaming locations. 2. You can subscribe to our e-newsletter through our website AZGamingGuide.com and have the magazine in your inbox. 3. Become our fan at Facebook.com/ArizonaGamingGuide! $

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GAMING—PT. III Psychology To Help You Beat The Casino

D

o you know what your motivation to gamble is? Are you going to the casino to see other people? To forget about the day’s events, or to just have some fun? How and where you gamble should depend on your answers. If you’re shooting for a big score, maybe a slot machine with a big jackpot is the answer. Or perhaps you’ll want to play the side bets at Blackjack and try for a jackpot there. If you’re going for fun or interaction with the masses, skip the pricey side-bets and only make the standard wagers. You’ll risk less and probably find that your bankroll goes farther. You can dramatically improve your odds of winning by refusing to be dominated psychologically. It’s a good thing to learn a little Basic Strategy at Blackjack so you can mash the house edge down to less than 1%. When you do, the house will only beat you for one penny on every dollar you bet. But what about the slot machines? Don’t let the psychology of penny slots dominate you! They entice you with a low wager and chances to win on so many lines. You don’t want to miss out, right?

about making an important call or raise, or bluff. And, more than anything else, you’ll want to know what’s motivating your opponents.

But penny slots are designed to take a lot more than a penny to play. On most games, you’ll be playing 2 cents per line. And, the games offer multiple lines. The more lines you bet, the more chances you have to win, but the more you bet, the more the casino wins. It’s a vicious cycle.

What if your opponent is losing, cranky, and shoving raises in every hand? Don’t get mad; it’s good for you. Just be patient and play only your best cards, and sometimes you’ll be able to play a lesser hand because you’ve got great pre-flop pot odds.

Instead of trying to bet every line and win the biggest jackpot, you can bet just enough to get to the bonus screens and win those payouts. It’s the same with video poker. It’s not mandatory that you bet 50 credits. You just want to get the 4000-coin payoff for a Royal Flush, and that usually only costs 5 credits. At slots and table games, play at your own pace. Don’t let outside influences (other players, the music, your impatience) dictate your action. Take enough time to play accurately, and don’t settle for playing the slot machines you don’t really like or for limits you aren’t comfortable with. Psychology At Poker At the poker tables, you’ll want to be fresh and ready to play. You’ll also want to have a large enough bankroll to not worry

14 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2019 | azgamingguide.com

Just don’t think you’ll be able to bluff. They’ll call you to the end, so you better have the goods. At the same time, make sure you value bet your reasonable hands because, again, they are going to call you all the way. And finally, don’t try to settle a score (love, hate, lucky-player frustration) in any gaming situation. You won’t be thinking clearly, and you shouldn’t take your issues out on your bankroll. Set a monetary limit and stay psychologically sound, it’s your best gamble. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. $115 AN HOUR PLAYING BLACKJACK I Do It And, If You Put Your Mind To It, So Can You!

M

any recreational players think that it would be fun and glamorous to be a professional Blackjack player. It does have its perks; it can be rewarding, and you can make a lot of money under the right conditions, but it is not fun. Making a living playing Blackjack is difficult because you have to put up with rude players, drunks, big losses, and casinos that want to throw you out because you are too good at what you do. However, if you can deal with all that, it is fun to play the casino's game, with the casino's rules, with the casino's dealers, with the casino's cards and walk out with the casino's money. It is simple to do and in this article I will tell you how to make about $115 an hour playing Blackjack. While it is possible to hammer out a living playing Blackjack in the Arizona casinos, I generally limit my play for serious money to the Las Vegas casinos. I have a lot of friends that work in the Arizona casinos as pit bosses and in upper management positions so I would prefer not to jeopardize my friendship by beating their casino out of large amounts of cash. You will see me playing in tournaments locally, but unless I am just playing for fun with some friends, you won't ever see me playing the high limit tables here in Arizona. In Las Vegas, I prefer a two deck game with double down on any two cards, including after splitting pairs, dealer stands on soft 17, re-split Aces, surrender, cut card is at least at 70%, and my betting limits are $50 to $400. I use an $8,000 bank roll for a four hour playing session, and I use an advanced plus minus count system with 42 basic strategy variations that are used for playing the hands according to the true count. Because I am a full time player with no means of replacing my bankroll through a full time job, the risk of losing my bankroll must be very low, around 1%. With a top bet of $400 per hand, the chance of me losing my entire $50,000.00 bankroll is .68% or about 1 in 100 because of variation alone. My betting schedule for one hand in a double deck game is as follows; Count Bet 0 or lower $50 1 $100 2 $200 3 $300 4 or higher $400

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2019 | azgamingguide.com

You can see that it is easy to remember what to bet playing the double deck game because your bet is $100 x the true count. My long term advantage is 1.37% and my average bet is $112.50. My expected value in the long run is 0.0137 x $112.50 = $1.54 per hand. As long as I am not playing at a full table, I can usually get to play at least 75 hands per hour which gives me an expected income of $115+ per hour. While I do not win all the time, using this method of play, I win on average 70% of all my playing sessions. I have a brand new book out called How To Become A Blackjack Jedi. It teaches you everything you need to know and some things that you haven’t even thought of. Order it on my website at FreeWebs.com/TJsBlackjackCorner/MyBook.htm. $

CRAPS BASICS—PART II Come Bet With Me

I

n last month’s article, I provided a simple strategy based on the PASS line bet. In this article, I will expand on that strategy by adding the COME bet.

The COME bet can only be made after a Point (4,5,6,8,9, or 10) has been rolled. The COME bet works just like a PASS line bet, a 7 or 11 wins; a 2,3 or 12 loses; or a second Point is established. In the case of the latter, you can now make an ODDS bet.

FIGURE 1—MAKING A PASS LINE BET

To better understand the PASS, COME and ODDS bets, I will use the CRAPS layout diagram as a visual aid. Figure 1 on the right simulates the CRAPS layout before a Point has been established. The black circle containing the word signifies this is a Come Out roll. The player has made a $1 bet on the PASS line. The dice are rolled, the result is a 6. The OFF button switches to ON and is now appearing in the 6 box. The player makes a $1 PASS ODDS bet and a COME bet. The layout appears as shown in Figure 2. The next roll of the dice is a 4. Neither the PASS line or COME bets win or lose. The COME bet is moved to the 4 box. The player makes an ODDS bet on the 4. The amount you bet can be equal to, or a multiple of, the COME bet. Depending on the game manufacturer and/or casino, the amount of the ODDS bet is based on a multiplier—1x, 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x.

FIGURE 2—ROLLING A SIX

FIGURE 3—PASS AND COME BETS WITH ODDS

The CRAPS layout now appears as shown in Figure 3. A 4 is rolled again. You win $5. The amount you win is based on the odds. Let's figure it out. There are eleven numbers that can be rolled: 2-12. There are 36 combinations: 6x6. The 7 can be rolled six ways. The 6 and 8 can be rolled five ways each, 5 and 9 four each, 4 and 10 three each. The Point wins if it is rolled before a 7, thus the odds of the 4 winning are 6:3, or 2:1. The amount you win is $3; $1 for the 4 and $2 for the 4 ODDS. The total payout is $5, including your initial bet. Once a COME bet wins, the bet and winnings are returned to you. You can now make another COME bet. Do not increase your bet amount. Remember, if a 7 is rolled, your COME bet wins; however, your PASS and PASS ODDS bet lose. That's okay. The $2 you just won on the COME bet covers your PASS bet loss. If an 11 is rolled your COME bet wins and your PASS bet is unaffected. If a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled your COME bet loses.

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2019 | azgamingguide.com

FIGURE 4—PRESSING THE COME ODDS BET If a 4 is rolled again, then press the COME ODDS bet by increasing the bet one unit, or $1 as shown in Figure 4. Continue to press the ODDS bet if the 4 continues to be rolled. If the 6 is rolled, then the PASS and PASS ODDS bets win. Since the PASS point is 6, then you win $1 for the PASS LINE bet, and $1.20 (6:5) for the PASS ODDS bet, a total payout of $4.20. The next roll is a Come Out roll. Next month I will cover the PLACE and BUY bets. $ Writer Daniel Cruikshank lives in Arizona, is retired, and has been an Electronic and Live Table Games player for decades.

Phoenix Area Resident Wins $452,936 Jackpot At Desert Diamond Casino West Valley

Casino Del Sol Earns Top Spot On List Of Best Casinos In America

A Phoenix area resident won big on Wednesday, July 10, when he hit a jackpot of $452,936 at Desert Diamond Casino West Valley in Glendale, Arizona while playing Everi’s popular White Hot Diamonds slot game. Talking Stick Resort Names 2019 Arizona State Poker Champion

A new poker champion was crowned at Talking Stick Resort on Tuesday, August 13 during the 15th annual Arizona State Poker Championship. A showdown full of twists and surprise plays, which amassed a large boisterous crowd, ensued for nearly six hours until just one man was left standing. After many folds and rivers, Arizona native Albert Calderon was named the 2019 Arizona State Poker Champion, securing the victory with a winning hand of king-high. “It feels unreal to win especially because I’m kind of delirious,” said Calderon. “I haven’t had much sleep, so it still feels dreamy.” Three days of poker was not the only reason for his sleep deprivation. A few days before his win, Calderon and his wife welcomed a new baby. He hoped his win of more than $200,000 would make up for his absence. The number of participants during the five-day tournament, which kicked off on Friday, August 9, broke an Arizona State Poker Championship’s record with 1800 seats sold. By day two of the tournament, alternates were no longer accepted and The ARENA Poker Room, which is the Valley’s largest poker room, had reached full capacity. “Out of all the games and tournaments we host, the Arizona State Poker Championship is easily the most exciting,” said Tom Young, Director of Poker at The ARENA Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort. “The tournament was special this year, not only did it break records, but we had more regulars make it to the final table than ever before. It was so fun for our staff to be able to root for some players they interact with every day.” The semi-finals of the tournament began on August 12, with 235 contenders vying for the final 10 spots in the competition. The final table commenced the following day, with four Arizona locals, Calderon, Huy “Turtle” Nguyen, Randy Tucker, and Brett McCallum. After five hours, Calderon and Nguyen were the final two players left to battle it out until Calderon was deemed champion with the winning hand. The Arizona State Poker Championship was not the first time that Calderon had played in Talking Stick Resort’s ARENA Poker Room. A regular to the room, he counts it as one of his favorite places to play. “I like to play at Talking Stick Resort because they have the best games, the most action,” he said.

There are other casinos that have poker, but there’s just way more energy here.” In addition to bragging rights, 32-year-old Calderon won $237,000, a trophy and a Rolex. Second place and third place winners, Nguyen and Tucker, were also rewarded for their performance, receiving trophies and payouts of $183,420 and $133,200 respectively. While the final table of 10 players received the highest payout amounts in the tournament’s history, the last 180 players were paid out. The following are the top 10 players in the Arizona State Poker Championship: Albert Calderon Huy “Turtle” Nguyen Randy Tucker Brett McCallum Jeffery Nicholes Michael Hubbs Franco Bownacci Eli Loewenthal Brandon Conrad Michael Weber

$237,000 $183,420 $133,200 $97,380 $69,480 $57,420 $43,740 $32,940 $23,400 $18,900

Whether in an intimate or a large concert performance, GYPSY provides the most authentic Stevie Nicks concert tribute anywhere. Lisa McCormick says, “When I’m on stage and performing as Stevie, out in the audience I see the smiles, everyone is singing along, all the hugs and so much love. It’s an unexplainable feeling and I am honored to be able to represent her.” Lisa adds, “Our Stevie Nicks Tribute band GYPSY began as a result of a chance meeting with Stevie Nicks. Then, I met Yuko Tamura, the band’s co-founder and keyboardist when our daughters were in school together. We both shared a common interest in music and became good friends.” When asked about the background to her art, McCormick commented: “I have spent many hours researching all I can about Stevie Nicks so that I can give the audience the best tribute experience. My goal is not only to recreate her music as closely as possible with our high-caliber band but also to recreate the same feelings and performance that you would have if you were viewing one of her concerts.” “I try to insert parts of her personality into the show by including stories about how she came to write her songs and multiple costume changes. It wouldn’t be a Stevie Nicks tribute concert if I weren’t honoring her timeless fashion sense,” added Lisa. “I love seeing how our shows can bring back memories for audience members of my generation and how they’re now sharing that music that’s so important to them with their own children and grandchildren.” GYPSY customizes a show specifically for each performance

Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Anka is bringing his tour “Anka Sings Sinatra: His Songs, My Songs, My Way” to the Diamond Center on Saturday, October 12, 2019. Tickets start at $55 and can be purchased through Start Tickets and at Desert Diamond Casino’s Box Office. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Lifehouse, an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, will be bringing its energetic sound to The Events Center at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on Friday, September 20, 2019. The Events Center, which opened in early 2019, seats 2,000 people and is part of the Casino’s multi-million dollar renovation.

Born July 30, 1941, in Ottawa, Canada, into a close-knit family, Paul Anka didn’t waste time getting his life in music started. From an early age he sang in a choir, studied piano and honed his writing skills with journalism courses. In 1956, he convinced his parents to let him travel to Los Angeles to visit his uncle where he hitchhiked to a meeting with Modern Records that led to the release of Anka’s first single “Blau-Wile Deveest Fontaine.” In the early 60’s, Anka became a junior associate of Sinatra and the Rat Pack. In the late 60’s, Anka wrote “My Way” for Frank Sinatra and by the 70’s, he had another string of hits like “You’re Having My Baby,” “Don’t Like To Sleep Alone,” and “Times Of Your Life.” In April 2013, Anka released his New York Times Bestselling autobiography entitled “My Way.” During the same time, his new 14-song album entitled “Duets” featured artists such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Tom Jones, Celine Dion and Michael Bublé. Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment, with three locations in Southern Arizona (Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why) and one in the West Valley, is owned and operated by the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, an enterprise of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Additional information can be found at DDCAZ.com or by calling 1.866.DDC.WINS. You can follow them on Twitter (@DiamondCasinos), Facebook (@DDCAZ), and Instagram (@DiamondCasinos). $

Founded in 1999, the band, formerly known as Blyss, has been topping charts with multiple hit singles for the better part of 20 years. The group, including members Jason Wade, Rick Woolstenhulme and Bryce Soderberg, is best known for hits such as “You and Me,” “Hanging by a Moment,” “Sick Cycle Carousel” and “Breathing.” Since breaking into music in 2000 with their debut album “No Name Face,” Lifehouse has released seven albums – cumulatively selling more than 15 million around the world. They have also topped the Hot 100 with a number two hit, “Hanging by a Moment,” and shared the stage with rock and roll icons including the Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam and Matchbox Twenty. In recent years, Lifehouse has released “Lifehouse: Greatest Hits on Universal Music Enterprises,” a chronological collection of the band’s 18 hit singles and best songs. Tickets for Lifehouse are on sale now through Ticketmaster with prices starting at $34.50. All ages are welcome to enjoy the performance. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. For more information about this show and other great performances coming to the Events Center, or Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, please visit their website at HarrahsAkChin.com or call 1.800.502.8000. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

BAD MANNERS Gone Are The Days When People Strived To Be Polite

D

ear Sami, please inform your readers to remember their manners in and out of the casino. Too many people have become so rude and very inconsiderate. When people lose their money, they become even more angry and their manners just go out the window. I’m 78 years old, I can’t walk without the help of my walker, and just last night I was almost pushed over by a young couple who were obviously angry and in a hurry to leave the casino. Neither one said excuse me or sorry. Sometimes I really can’t believe the behavior I see in the world today and it’s much worse at the casino. Please do an article on manners. Urge people to be decent and courteous! Thanks Sami. Ethel Krakowski – Kingman, AZ

buffet, an elderly gentleman has both hands occupied with two cups of hot coffee, boy runs into man and both get showered with sweltering coffee. This is a situation I recently witnessed with unfortunate consequences!

Ethel, I absolutely agree with you 100%. When I’m out and about, I can’t help but notice how bad people’s manners have become. Gone are the days when everyone strived to be polite and show their best side to the public. Now it seems that most people either don’t care or are just downright oblivious to their own actions. I’m inclined to believe the egocentric tendencies of most people in today’s society just keeps them unaware of how their own attitudes and actions affect others. The question is: how do you even begin to combat a self-centered attitude amongst individuals who are just unaware? With the hopes that I won’t be preaching to the choir and that this article will actually open some people’s eyes, here are some of the most common bad manners I’ve encountered both in and out of the casino:

Rude And Inconsiderate People Please be polite! Remember what it feels like to hold the door for someone or have someone hold the door for you? Be particularly kind to the elderly and disabled people. Why not offer to help move the chair in front of a slot machine for someone who is confined to a wheelchair? Or, just let someone cut in line in front of you that seems to be having a difficult time standing! Simple gestures go a long way in making a person feel good!

Cell Phone Conversations In Public People just don’t seem to care what information they broadcast to the entire world during their cell phone conversations! I’ve overheard people discussing their health issues, their finance problems, and even their marital troubles! Any conversation in public is particularly annoying, especially when it is done at full volume and while you are trying to concentrate on playing your favorite casino game! Children That Misbehave Casinos have become vacation destinations and many offer arcades, movie theaters, and various other family-friendly options. Before you bring your children to any public place, talk to them about their manners! Although it may be okay for them to run around and scream at the top of their lungs at home, it is not appropriate to do so in public—especially in crowded places. Think about this scenario: boy is running around in a casino

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2019 | azgamingguide.com

Pets That Misbehave Most casino hotels now allow pets. As much as I am fond of animals, I still have a difficult time accepting this new hotel policy. Besides dogs barking loudly at other dogs and people passing by, I’ve also witnessed dogs urinating in the elevators and destroying hotel property. Please don’t consider bringing your pet to a casino or any other public place if he or she is not well-trained!

Not Taking The Time To Show Gratitude I’ve written many articles over the years concerning tipping. I’m extremely frustrated when people don’t show their appreciation to service and wait staff. Recently, I’ve observed atrocious behavior where not only is there no tip involved, but drinks are snatched from the cocktail server without any eye contact, acknowledgement, or a mere thank you! It’s simple … do unto others as you’d want them to do unto you! Anger And Excessive Use Of Foul Language Yelling, screaming, pounding on machines, couples arguing, I’ve seen it all at the casino. Losing money, especially money you can’t afford to part with, brings the worst out in people. Hearing expletives in a casino and other public places are common occurrences. There’s something called self-control. Use it! $

Jokes & Quotes Research has discovered that the act of laughing stimulates the immune system, may help prevent disease, and may actually reverse some medical conditions. We suggest you consult with your doctor and perhaps you can show them these jokes & quotes! A woman decided to have her portrait painted. She told the artist to paint her with diamond rings, a diamond necklace, diamond bracelets, a diamond brooch, and a gold Rolex watch inlaid with diamonds. The artist replied, “But you’re not wearing any of these things.” The woman replied, “I know. It’s in case I should die before my husband. I’m sure he’ll remarry right away and I want his new wife to go crazy looking for the jewelry!” Summer vacation was over and the teacher was asking the class how everyone spent their time. She turned to one boy and asked what he did over break. He replied, “We visited my grandmother in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.” The teacher said, “That sounds like an excellent spelling word! Can you teach the class how to spell that?” Without hesitating, the boy said, “You know, come to think of it, she lives in New York City!” Knowing what you can NOT do is more important than knowing what you can do. In fact, that’s good taste!—Lucille Ball Attempt the impossible in order to improve your work!—Bette Davis
