PLAYERS TALK Q: Dear Ms. Lang, Editor-In-Chief. I just love your Arizona Gaming Guide and try every month to pick one up at the Desert Diamond Casino [in Tucson]. Unfortunately, I could not get the September issue. I was following the articles on craps basics by Daniel Cruikshank. Is there any way you could send me the page for part two? I would really appreciate it. I am elderly and just couldn’t get to the casino last month. Thank you very much and keep up the good work. I know many of us enjoy it and learn a lot of information on gambling. Nancy Hymer – Tucson, AZ A: Dear Nancy, Thank you very much for your kind words. We appreciate all our fans and love to hear how important our magazine is to all of you. We will mail you copies of the September, October, and November issues so you can keep up with the articles on electronic table games. Enjoy and good luck! Readers can always get back issues of the Arizona Gaming Guide on our website at AZGamingGuide.com. If you choose to visit our site, make sure to sign up for our electronic newsletter. Every month, we’ll email the digital issue to you at the beginning of the month. For those readers who are table game enthusiasts beyond blackjack, house banked poker, and traditional poker games, be aware the agreements between the Tribes and the State of Arizona do not allow for live craps, roulette, baccarat, sic-bo, etc. So, in Arizona, you’ll only find electronic versions of those games. While the agreements between the Tribes and the State are frequently amended, most likely some approval would be required on the part of the state legislature in order to incorporate all the different table games as live games. In addition, there is no legal framework for sports betting within the boundaries of Arizona at this time. Again, this area of gaming will have to be approved, in some way, by the legislature and agreed upon by all the Tribes and the State. Please remember the Tribal casinos are the only places where wagering, aside from bingo and charitable gambling, can take place. Beware of any establishment offering slot machines, poker, and other card games. Those businesses are most likely operating illegally. If you believe a business in your area is operating as an illegal gaming establishment you can contact your local law enforcement agency or the Arizona Department of Gaming at 1.602.771.4263. Their main office is located at 1110 West Washington Street Suite 450 in downtown Phoenix. $

HOW TO PLAY OMAHA—PART II Just Like Texas Hold ‘Em But With Four Cards To Start!

T

he best part of Omaha - a game just like Texas Hold ‘Em but with four cards to start - is that every hand seems exciting. Unfortunately, that’s also the worst part of Omaha. You must have the discipline to throw many hands away. Sure, 7-7-6-5 double suited looks good, but your only real money hand is a full house with a board that includes a 7 and a pair of lower cards. And, quads happen much more often in Omaha than Texas Hold ‘Em. So, you need to choose hands carefully and you need to throw away many starting hands after seeing the flop. This will minimize your losses and keep you from chasing hands that even if you make them (like a flush with 7-6 high from above or a straight of the same cards) are unlikely to win. Go ahead and spend a half-blind on that 7-7-6-5 if you want, but don’t be surprised if you flop a set of sevens, turn a straight, and then river the third-best flush. That’s Omaha in a nutshell. Keep in mind that starting hands that are all one suit aren’t going to help you. Neither are the hands that contain three (or four) of one card value. Even if you start with J-J-J-8, what could you flop? The one remaining jack I guess, but on the rare times it happens, it usually won’t hold up as the winning hand. Starting Hands That Work in Omaha If you start with Ace-Ace King-King, you’ve got a good hand in Omaha, but not great. Sure, you can make the nut full house two ways, but if the hand isn’t double suited (the ace-king of spades and say the ace-king of hearts), you don’t even have a top-30 hand. Your best-starting hands in Omaha are always double suited and contain at a pair of aces or faces. That means Ace-Ace KingKing is number one, but number two happens to be Ace-Ace Jack-Ten. The advantage of making the top full house, nut flush, or straight is the best quality for a starting hand. The next best-starting hands are any pair of aces with another pair, working their way down from queens to deuces. Then comes King-King with pocket queens, jacks or tens, and then queen, jack and ten combos. After that group comes Queen-Queen hands with pairs of jacks, tens, nines, and combos that make high flushes and straights

14 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2019 | azgamingguide.com

(ace, king, jack, ten, nines), and finally Jack-Jack Ten-Ten and Jack-Jack Ten-Nine. That’s the top three-dozen starting hands. Is that all you’ll be playing? No, but sticking with hands that contain aces and faces, suited cards, and connected face cards that you can make a straight with will keep you busy enough that you won’t get bored – or broke. You will go broke if you don’t recognize when you are in bad shape or even drawing dead on the flop or turn. Play good cards, and your decisions will be easy. When you don’t flop a hand that is or might become the nuts, you aren’t likely to make any money. Finally, if there is a possible straight, flush, or just a single pair for a full house and you run into any aggression, well, you should assume you are up against the hand represented. INTIMIDATION & BLACKJACK Don’t Let This Natural Response Kill Your Game

T

he seat to the right of the dealer is called third base. Many players won't sit there because they believe that player controls the flow of the cards, and a bad play by this player can ruin the game for everyone. While you will remember a bad play that caused you to lose a hand, in the long run it has no effect on your outcome. Stupid players help you just as much as they hurt you, the problem is you only remember the ones that caused you to lose. The intimidation of this seat will cause many players not to sit there or will cause them to play hands incorrectly as to not mess up the cards. If you were sitting at third base and you had the hand of 12 versus the dealer up card of 2, how many of you would hit it even though it is the correct basic strategy play? If you deviate from basic strategy so you don't get rude comments from the other players, you will cost yourself money. You have to eliminate intimidation from your game. It’s tough enough to make money playing Blackjack so you have to play the hands correctly. I personally like to sit at third base, and since I am a card counter my strategy is different than basic strategy. For example, when my count is negative I hit 12 versus a dealer up card of 4. It drives the other players crazy and I am often told that I need to learn how to play the game by other players! But these are the same players that can't understand how I ended up winning while they lost at the end of the day. In fact, I like it when other players get mad and leave the table! I prefer one-on-one with the dealer because I can get 200 hands in an hour as opposed to only 60 with a full table. Since I have a long term advantage over the casino it helps me get to the long run expected outcome quicker. Have you ever run across the self proclaimed Blackjack expert at your table? The one who always tells you how you should have played your hand after it’s over! I don't talk much when I'm playing, but not too long ago I doubled Ace-8 versus a dealer up card of a 6 and caught a 10, then the dealer caught a 5 to make 21 and beat everyone. When “Mr. Blackjack Expert” asked why I did that I simply replied, “if you don't know, this game is going to cost you a lot of money.” That shut him up because he knew that I knew!

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2019 | azgamingguide.com

So if the correct play is to hit our 12 against the dealer’s 3, or hit your Ace-7 versus the dealer’s 9, do it. Don't let any player or seat intimidate you. I have a brand new book out called How To Become A Blackjack Jedi. It teaches you everything you need to know and some things that you haven’t even thought of before. ROULETTE BASICS—PART I Let’s Spin That Wheel!

T

his is probably the easiest, and most fun, electronic table game to play. There is more to it, though, then just betting your favorite number and hoping to win big. It helps to have a strategy. In this article, I will discuss the various bets that can be made and provide you with a strategy. Below is a reasonable facsimile of a Roulette betting layout:

The other outside bets consist of twelve numbers referred to as Dozens. They pay 2-1. These bets are described below: • 1st 12 - the first twelve numbers (1-12) • 2nd 12 - the middle numbers (13-24) • 3rd 12 - the last twelve numbers (25-36) • TOP - The twelve numbers in the top row • MIDDLE - The twelve numbers in the middle row • BOTTOM - The twelve numbers in the bottom row You may have noticed that none of the above bets contain the 0 or 00. Again, this provides the house with an edge by not paying the true odds.

In American style Roulette there are the standard 36 numbers consisting of 18 Red and 18 Black. These numbers are laid out consecutively in a grid, starting with 1 in the lower left corner, and ending with 36 in the upper right corner. In addition, there are two Green numbers, 0 and 00, referred to as Zero and Double-Zero. The game consists of a slotted wheel and a ball track. As the wheel spins clockwise a ball runs on a track counter clockwise. As the ball slows down it eventually lands into a numbered slot. The odds of any one number winning are 37-1. If you bet on a single number then you win 35 times your bet. Why not 37 times, according to the true odds? The difference is referred to as the House Edge.

The following are a few ways to make grid bets: • Split - a bet placed on the border of two numbers pays 17-1 • Street - a bet placed on the bottom border of the first number in a column of three numbers pays 11-1 • Neighbors - a bet that includes two numbers located to the immediate right and left of another number on the wheel, not the betting layout. The payout depends on how the bet is made. • GREEN - a split bet placed on the border between the 0 & 00. I have been using the following strategy: • GREEN • Street bet which includes the last winning number • Street bets which include the winning number’s neighbors • Street bets which include the neighbor’s neighbor.

On the Roulette betting layout there are several additional bets you can make. The odds vary depending on the bet. I will review these bets beginning with the outside bets and then finishing with the inside or grid bets. The following bets usually appear at the bottom of the layout and represent a grouping of 18 out of the 36 red and black colored numbers. They pay even money. The bets are clearly labeled as follows: • LOW - the first eighteen numbers (1-18) • EVEN - even numbers (2,4,6,8 thru 36) • RED or BLACK - the color of the winning number • ODD - odd numbers (1,3,5,7 thru 35) • HIGH - the last eighteen numbers (19-36)

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2019 | azgamingguide.com

Above is another betting layout which simplifies making Neighbor bets. Using the layout, if the last number is 22, then I bet the streets containing 15, 34, 22, 5 and 17. Beware, most other roulette strategies available in books, magazines, or on websites advocate really poor wagering decisions. Among the worst are strategies advocating doubling your bet after losing. $ Writer Daniel Cruikshank lives in Arizona, is retired, and has been an Electronic and Live Table Games player for decades.

AZ Department Of Gaming $28.9 Million During Q1 Of FY 2020 Strong & Steady Upward Trend

Talking Stick Resort Wins “Top 100 Resorts” & “Top 25 Best Buddies Resorts”

The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) announced $28,899,442 in tribal gaming contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund for the State’s first quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2020. This amount represents a 5.3 percent increase when compared to FY2019 and follows the highest year on record since the Arizona Tribal State Gaming Compacts were signed in 2003. “We’re pleased to report a strong start to the State’s fiscal year 2020,” said Ted Vogt, Director, Arizona Department of Gaming. “With this healthy increase of 5.3 percent, tribal gaming contributions have shown a steady upward trend for 10 consecutive quarters.”

Talking Stick Resort, an enterprise of the Salt River PimaMaricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), has been named the recipient of GOLF’s “Top 100 Resorts in North America” and also won in its “Top 25 Resorts for Buddies” category.

ADG distributed State FY2020 first quarter tribal gaming contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund as follows: Instructional Improvement Fund/Education $14,403,482 Trauma and Emergency Services Fund $ 7,201,741 Arizona Department of Gaming Operating Costs $ 2,600,950 Arizona Wildlife Conservation Fund $ 2,057,640 Tourism Fund $ 2,057,640 Problem Gambling $ 577,989 TOTAL: $28,899,442

Hundreds of resorts across North America were assessed by GOLF Magazine for this first-ever award. Those selected to be a Top 100 Resort were then put into one of four experience categories: Luxury, Buddies, General Excellence and Families. Talking Stick Resort was placed in the “Top 25 Resorts for Buddies” category. Those selected in the Buddies category have demonstrated player satisfaction, featured multiple golf courses and gave players a place to unwind and have fun after a day spent on the course.

Per the AZ Tribal-State Gaming Compact, Tribes with casinos contribute 1 to 8 percent of their Class III gross gaming revenue to the state, cities, towns and counties. Currently, there are 24 Class III casinos in AZ, which ADG regulates with AZ tribes. Established by the AZ State Legislature in 1995, ADG is the state regulatory agency for tribal gaming, racing and parimutuel/simulcast wagering, and unarmed combat sports. ADG also provides and supports education, prevention and treatment programs for people and families affected by problem gambling through its Division of Problem Gambling and 24-hour confidential helpline, 1.800.NEXT.STEP. $

Talking Stick Resort has the perfect balance of fun and relaxation and everything in between. The resort has a multitude of amenities, including its two championship golf courses, three swimming pools, a world-class spa on the 14th floor with breathtaking views, a state-of-the-art fitness center, 11 restaurants and lounges, and a whole world of gaming on the main floor. Talking Stick Resort is a AAA Four Diamond Rated Resort and a central landmark within the emerging Talking Stick Cultural and Entertainment Destination.

Norm retires all material he has used on specials and guarantees that no two shows will ever be identical. Thursday, Dec. 5: Charlie Daniels Band – Wild Horse Pass Known for his number one country hit “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” his up-tempo fiddle playing, and his contributions to Southern rock, country, and bluegrass music, Charlie Daniels is a country music legend who has been thrilling audiences with his energy-packed shows since the 1950s. Little Joe Y La Familia, a dynamic and lively Tejano band, is a Grammy-winning group led by Temple, Texas native Joe Hernandez. Known as Little Joe, Hernandez has been performing for half of a century and credits his fans for helping him sustain his 50-year career. “It’s an incredible feeling to see men and women in the audience who get sentimental and sing, cry and dance,” says Hernandez. “I’m so impressed with the positive energy of our crowds, there’s always a lot of love in the audience.” “Our fans get the most excited about our signature song, Las Nubes, which some people also call the Chicano National Anthem,” says Hernandez. Not many artists get to have a signature song in their lifetime, so we’re very honored.” Off stage, Hernandez is passionate about giving back to his community and is involved in several organizations that help children. As a diabetic, he is passionate about educating people on how to avoid the disease, which led him to found a diabetes and obesity prevention program. “After being diagnosed with Type II diabetes 10 years ago, I noticed people were embarrassed to talk about the disease,” says Hernandez. “I didn’t have all the facts before my diagnosis, so I started this program to help people not feel embarrassed to talk about it and want to find answers.” For more info about this show and other great performances coming to the Events Center, or Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, visit Caesars.com/Harrahs-Ak-Chin or call 1.800.502.8000. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

REGULAR SLOT PLAYERS ARE STUPID? Scientific Study Claims Most Slot Enthusiasts Can’t Make Observations

R

eading scientific research is something I enjoy doing from time to time. I love it even more when media outlets summarize findings using ignorant journalists. I think you know the drill… Global warming is bunk, global warming isn’t bunk, drink this and you won’t get a heart attack, definitely don’t eat this and avoid a stroke, putting sugar in your gas tank actually increases your gas mileage, etc. What I find particularly disturbing (i.e. really pisses me off) is when I come across headlines in the casino gaming industry which just make me shake my head. Unfortunately, I see this all the time. Major media outlets, publishers, people in the casino gaming industry, the general public, and don’t get me started about websites claiming to dispense wisdom on all things casino, all have plenty of disinformation to disseminate and promote bad science. I once read a study claiming problem gambling was a result of the low jackpot limits instituted by casinos in Canada. Wow! Seriously? Respected scientists and their peer-reviewed scientific journals didn’t bother to check that those jackpot limits supposedly put in place by casinos are actually a gaming regulation the casinos must abide by. If there’s a problem gambling angle to investigate, better bring it up with the regulators and don’t point the finger at the casinos and the “evil” slot machines. A group of researchers studying something they don’t even fully comprehend and not bothering to actually “research” and then writing up conclusions is truly a little pointless. Or, one then has to ask what the political or social motivations are behind publishing the “study” and its “conclusions.” Idiots, all of them. I mean, what else can you say? Anywho, enough generalized ranting. Let’s get back to specifics and the “facts,” or, the “supposed facts”…according to studies... Recently I came across an article whose headline implied it was a myth that players can tell the difference between the house edge on the same slot machine. That makes even a non-gambler pause for a minute. It certainly made me pause. But that’s why they call it “click bait” right? And, it works, even on me. The way I read the headline was that your average slot player is stupid and incapable of making basic observations. Perhaps this is what casinos want to hear. Their customers are stupid. Perfect! It doesn’t matter what games the casino installs or what

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | November 2019 | azgamingguide.com

hold percentage the casino sets them at, or even what settings the slot machine manufacturer recommends for top performance based on test bank data and installations around the world. The customers are stupid, so just make the house edge as high as possible. Nobody can tell the difference anyway. Why then do we get letters and emails claiming the exact opposite? The basic content of these communications goes something like this: “I play game A at casino B and I play the same game A at casino C and my money lasts longer at casino C on average.” I recognize this is anecdotal and not scientific research, but after more than ten years since we launched the Arizona Gaming Guide and thousands of letters and emails about house edge one begins to recognize exactly how smart our audience is! I don’t think they are dumb. The rest of the staff doesn’t think so either. What I do know is there are many factors influencing play on a slot machine. House edge is one, but there are many more. Look, what the general public might not understand is while there may be “dumb casino patrons” out there, perhaps even a significant proportion of the entire group of patrons, there are those that are smart. Being a “smart” gambler is actually pretty straightforward. All a casino patron has to do is keep a log of wins, losses, time on device, average spins to the bonus, and the truth pops out quite fast as to which game has a higher house edge when comparing one casino to the next. Just because you don’t see casino patrons keeping a visible log book at the casino, they do know, even intuitively, when they are being hit over the head with high house hold and high volatility games at a particular casino. Patrons can easily compare video poker pay tables from one casino to the next and quickly get a very good idea about the difference in house edge between casinos. Hello! $

Jokes & Quotes Research has discovered that the act of laughing stimulates the immune system, may help prevent disease, and may actually reverse some medical conditions. We suggest you consult with your doctor and perhaps you can show him or her these jokes & quotes! A man walks into a coat-and-tie-only restaurant and asks to be seated. The waiter says, “Sir, you don’t have a coat or a tie.” So the man goes out to his truck and gets a jacket. When he comes back in, he asks, “May I be seated?” The waiter replies, “Sir, you don’t have a tie.” So the man goes back out to his truck and wraps jumper cords around his neck. He comes back in and says, “Now may I be seated?” The waiter says, “OK, but don’t go trying to start something.” There’s a hell of a distance between wisecracking and wit. Wit has truth in it; wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words. —Dorothy Parker The person who knows how to laugh at [themselves] will never cease to be amused. —Shirley MacLane Normal is just a cycle on the washing machine. —Whoopi Goldberg
