Y

ou probably recognize “Auld Lang Syne” as the song belted out at the stroke of midnight with champagne glasses raised, but do you know what the words actually mean and why this famous song is sung in almost all English-speaking parts of the world to ring in the New Year? Where does it come from? “Auld Lang Syne” was a poem written by a Scottish poet by the name of Robert Burns in 1788 that was set to a traditional Scottish folk melody. Burns, himself, admitted to drawing inspiration from a similar poem written by another Scottish poet, James Watson, in 1711. What does it mean? “Auld Lang Syne” literally means “Old Long Since” and means “Times Gone By,” so essentially, we are singing “Let’s toast to old friends and to old times and let nothing—no time and no distance come between us.” Why do we sing it on New Year’s Eve? On January 1, 1929, Guy Lombardo and his orchestra sang the song at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City and that night it became the traditional song played on New Year’s Eve in the United States. In fact, Lombardo’s rendition of the song is still played during the “Ball Drop” in Times Square. So, let’s raise our glasses and sing the words in thanks for the old times and the hopes for more good times to come! Happy New Year! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK QUESTION: I love playing Caveman Keno. NOT the new game, but the old game on the old-looking cabinets. I either play 6 spots where 6/6 pays 780 credits or 5 spots where 5/5 pays 215 credits. Obviously, the 6 out of 6 spot win is nicer than the 5 out of 5 win. But my question is which is the better play in the long run: 5 spots or 6 spots? Thank you. Ed Reynolds – Apache Junction, Arizona ANSWER: Let’s compare IGT’s 5 Spot “original” Caveman Keno to the 6 Spot game. What you are about to learn will shock you! Hopefully we make you think carefully about your next play session at your favorite casino. While the two games have almost the same long term expected value, there are several key features about each game that are worth pointing out. As a result of our discussion, you will have to examine the type of keno player you are. Are you looking for big pays and are willing to wait for them? Or, are you a player who is looking for fun and a longer session based on a limited bankroll? In order for you to answer these questions, here are the major categories we need to examine when comparing these two games with one another: 1. How often, on average, does each game pay? 5 Spot pays once every 2.72 spins 6 Spot pays once every 6.19 spins 2. How much, on average, do you win when you are paid? 5 Spot pays 2.54 credits 6 Spot pays 5.78 credits 3. If I start with a bankroll of 80 credits (a $20.00 bill for quarters) and wager 1 credit, on average, how many spins can I expect to play? 5 Spot will let you play around 165 games 6 Spot will let you play around 135 games 4. Show me the money! How many spins, on average, does it take to hit all the spots (regardless of the number of eggs)? 5 Spots pays a jackpot of 5 out of 5 once in 1,551 games 6 Spots pays a jackpot of 6 out of 6 once in 7,753 games Now you have all the facts. Based on your preferred playing style, how many spots do you want to play? $

ALL ABOUT CASINO BOSSES Being In Someone Else’s Shoes

I

recall eating in the restaurants of small-town Nevada as a ten-year-old and watching my father at the slot machines. When nobody was around, he’d wink and drop a few nickels in the slots and wander off. Then I’d dash out of the restaurant and pull the handles myself before running back to lunch. He also let my sister and I play keno while we ate breakfast, but I don’t think that affected me. I’ve been gambling for years and years. I haven’t caught the keno habit yet. I play for fun and excitement like you. We’re lucky here in Arizona. There aren’t casinos on every corner, and we don’t all work in the industry, but we still like a night out from time to time. Still, with all the times you’ve been in a casino, you might not have realized how many bosses there are. Or maybe you have? Casino Bosses – Like Onions If you allow me to paraphrase, I think it was Shrek who said, “Casino bosses are like onions, you have to peel the layers.” No, not for the reason you are thinking, but because there are so many different departments working together in one place. And, each one has a set of rules they try to live by and enforce. But sometimes, the guests surprise you. I watched a Food and Beverage Manager talking to a Security Manager about an incident in the buffet. It seems a guest managed to cut their mouth on a spoon. The F&B manager said, “Well, I’m not sure how that happened, but do we have the offending spoon lockedup?” He was told they did, and the guest just wanted a refund, so when the manager agreed, the guest asked for a refund for his two friends, “Because they were grossed-out by all the blood.” That part didn’t work. The Gaming Factor Casinos rely on gaming to somehow make enough money to stay open. The slots, poker room, and table games departments are important. That means, when you need help anywhere on the casino floor, you’ll eventually make your way up the ladder to reach a Gaming Manager or the Manager on Duty. And, they’ll be happy to help if they can. If they look bored or just smile, it’s not their fault. Not because they know everything, but because they’ve seen everything. I

14 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2020 | azgamingguide.com

heard a Slot Manager talking to a change-person at a club that still had the coin-in slot machines. It seems the change-person had disappeared for a while on duty. He said, “I had to leave and go to Safeway next door.” I thought he needed aspirin or something. It’s noisy around all those slot machines, but no. When asked why he went there, he said, “I had to get change for a hundred-dollar bill.” You can’t make that up. You also can’t make up the greatest parting shot of a dealer who just got fired. He was cranky. He was hungry. He went to the snack bar, got an order of nachos, and walked over to the craps game where his boss was watching the game. Then, with a wink of an eye, he turned the plate of nachos upside-down and pressed it against the middle of the craps game layout and said, “Chips play!” Good luck and have fun! $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. AVOIDING THE BIG LOSS Acceptance, Understanding & Control Separate Pro & Casual Players

O

ne of the keys to showing a profit from Blackjack play month after month is to avoid the big loss. Part of playing winning Blackjack is understanding that losses are to be expected and when they occur, accept them. Emotions have no place in the game of Blackjack. If you lose and get mad, you will start chasing your lost money with more money and when the dust has settled you probably will have dug yourself a hole so deep that you can't recover. And, that’s when you end up walking out of the casino talking to yourself. How many times have you bought in for $40 and didn't have to go back into your pocket the remainder of your playing session? That's when it is easy and fun to play Blackjack. But the down side is the times when $40 doesn't last ten minutes and you’re right back in your bankroll. How a player reacts under these circumstances is what separates the professional player from the recreational player. When a losing situation arises, a professional Blackjack player understands that it's not going to be their day and has the discipline to walk away with a small loss. The recreational player will lose $100 then continue to play until all of their money is gone. If you lose $100 you will probably lose $500, that's just the way it usually goes. Rather than continue to play, have enough discipline to accept it is not your day and walk away. It is a lot easier to come back the next day and only have to make up $100 rather than to try and make up $500 or more. A tool that I recommend to help players stay disciplined is to keep a log book of each and every time you play, and how much you win or lose. Some players have no idea how much they lost but this will help you be honest with yourself and keep losses to a minimum. To help you understand the swings in Blackjack consider this, if I take a coin and randomly flip it, there are two possible outcomes—heads or tails. Each time the coin is randomly tossed, there is a 50/50 chance of getting a head or a tail. If I flip the coin ten times in a row you would expect to get 5 heads and 5 tails, but more than likely you will get 4 tails and 6 heads or somewhere in between. It is possible that some may even get 10 heads or 10 tails in a row. In a short trial, such as 10 flips, anything is possible. But in a trial of 1,000 flips, the results will be very close to the expected outcome—500 tails, 500 heads.

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2020 | azgamingguide.com

When I sit down to play Blackjack, I have a small advantage over the casino because I am a card counter. And, although I know I will win in the long run, I know that in the short run anything can and will happen. Just like someone getting 10 heads in a row in the short run, the dealer’s first 10 hands may be 6 hands of 20 and 4 Blackjacks. Even though you would only expect the dealer to have a Blackjack once every 21 hands, in the short run, dealer results like this can and do happen. When a situation like this arises, I accept that it’s not my day and walk away with a small loss. However, I know that in the long run, just like flipping a coin 1,000 times, the percentages will be true to the expected outcome and I will end up a winner. I teach what it takes to be a card counter in my brand new book How To Become A Blackjack Jedi, available for sale now. You will learn everything you need to know and some things that you haven’t even thought of before. Order it on my website at FreeWebs.com/tjsblackjackcorner/mybook.htm. $

STREAKS & STATISTICS Using Trends In Numbers To Your Advantage

W

hen is the best time to bet on a streak? That’s easy, when the streak begins! Easy to say, that is. We’ve all been there. The Roulette stats show Red has occurred 58% of the time. Bet big on Red. The next spin is Black. Or, the Craps graph shows the 7 is dominating. Bet large on 7 at 4:1. The next roll is anything but the 7. Bottom line, there is no way to predict what the next number, or roll, or card dealt is going to be. If there was, I wouldn’t be writing this article. I would be on my yacht living large in some exotic part of the world; however, there is a way you can use statistics to your advantage. Statistics can be used to spot trends, and where there’s a trend, there’s a streak. By having a strategy you can be at the beginning of a streak, ride it out and walk away with some money. In the next two articles I am going to provide some suggestions to help you develop a strategy you can use when playing your favorite e-Table game. My first strategy rule is to establish a cash management methodology. This involves setting the size of my bankroll, the amount that I am willing to lose; and my buy-in amount per session, the cash I initially enter into the machine. My bankroll is three times my buy-in amount. For example, if my bankroll is $150 then my buy-in amount is $50. A session begins when I put the cash in and ends when I cash out or lose the $50. I use the following mantra when setting my bet amount: Do not bet high, on your own supply. What does that mean? I do not bet the max until I have won several bets in a row. The quickest way to lose your bankroll is to bet $35 on Red, or the 7, in hopes that you’ll win. My minimum bet for e-Roulette is $1.50, for eCraps $2 on the come-out roll or $4 when a point is established. My second rule is to know the game I am about to bet on. I have heard many people bet on the Double-Zero because they think it’s going to pay more than any other number. Wrong! All numbers pay 35:1 including the Green ones. Or they bet on Any Craps thinking they will win when a 7 or 11 is rolled. Wrong again. The Craps numbers are 2, 3 or 12. Know the game. My final rule is to never bet more than I can win. For example, in Roulette a Street bet covers three numbers in a column. The payout is $3 or 2.75:1. I bet six streets at a quarter per street for a total of $1.50. If one of my street bets wins I’ve doubled my bet.

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2020 | azgamingguide.com

My strategy is to bet on the winning number and its neighbors immediately to the numbers right and left; adding $.75 to the total bet. I now have eight bets at $2. If a different street wins, my win amount is still $3, but my profit is only $1. If I win again and add the extra bets, my winnings will only be $.25 This is not a sustainable strategy; however, I can make a minor modification, which changes everything. In the next article I will discuss betting strategies and I will let you in on a Craps betting secret. Happy New Year and good luck to all. $ Writer Daniel Cruikshank lives in Arizona, is retired, and has been an Electronic and Live Table Games player for decades.

For more information about Apache Gold Casino Resort, visit Apache-Gold-Casino.com or call 1.800.APACHE8. Kingdom of the Titans by WMS One ‘oldie but goodie’ video reel slot machine that continues to be a favorite we enjoy playing whenever we visit Apache Gold Casino Resort is Kingdom of the Titans by WMS. We love this slot because of its Spinning Streak game play mechanic. So, what is the Spinning Streak? It’s a feature of the game that we guarantee will have your heart thumping. In short, it’s a re-spin bonus. But hold on a second, because it’s not just any old re-spin feature you’ve seen plenty of times in other games. The Spinning Streak, as its name implies, keeps re-spinning and respinning for as long as additional wins are created on the screen! After the initial spin, all symbols in winning combinations lock in place and all other symbols re-spin in an attempt to make additional larger wins. As long as there is at least one symbol added to any existing winning combination, the Spinning Streak continues – creating bigger and bigger wins! So, during each Spinning Streak you’re hoping that the symbols fill the screen entirely! And that is the most exciting aspect of this game; sitting back and just watching massive wins created on the screen. The Spinning Streak even happens with the bonus symbols! All you have to do is collect three bonus symbols scattered anywhere on the screen to trigger the re-spin feature. Then, get at least one more bonus symbol to trigger the next re-spin feature again! The five symbols required to get into the free spins bonus isn’t very hard to accomplish with the extra re-spin boosts! Five bonus symbols give you 8 free games, 8 bonus symbols award you 10 free games, landing 10 bonus symbols on the reels reward you with 25 free games, and if you can get 11 or more bonus symbols on the reels, you’ll be basking in the glory of 50 free spins! And, guess what? Winning the 50 free spins is not difficult. We’ve hit them several times and have seen plenty of other players do the same. Those free games in the bonus will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, because all the wins are randomly multiplied by 2X to 10X! Whether you walked by this great slot game in the past and just never considered playing it or you gave it a try once but didn’t have the best experience, we strongly encourage you to give this slot a shot! You can experience some amazing wins on this game! We’ve filled the screen with everything from low and medium-valued symbols for several hundred dollars to high-valued symbols for whopping hand pays for thousands of dollars during the bonus round of Kingdom of the Titans! $ azgamingguide.com | January 2020 | Arizona Gaming Guide

Harrah’s Ak-Chin—Maricopa March 27

Mazatzal Hotel & Casino January 25

Josh Turner, MCA Nashville recording artist, has announced that he has rescheduled his performance at The Events Center at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino to Friday, March 27, 2020. After a tragic accident involving members of his touring team, Turner cancelled his remaining 2019 performances. Original purchased tickets will be honored.

January 25, Mazatzal welcomes one of the most popular and widely recognized female country singers of her era, Crystal Gayle. Gayle supported her trademark, nearly floor-length hair with a supple voice, a flair for ballads, and a crossoverfriendly country-pop style.

As one of country music’s most recognizable talents, Turner has been honored with multiple Grammy, CMA and ACM award nominations, as well as received six Inspirational Country Music Awards. Turner is known for his unique voice and many hits including “Hometown Girl,” “Would You Go With Me,” “Your Man,” “Time Is Love,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance” and “Long Black Train.” In addition, Turner is one of the youngest members inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, selling more than eight million units and topping more than 1.5 billion in global streaming and populated radio. Along with his success as a musician, Turner has also tackled the written word as an author. He released his first book, “Man Stuff: Thoughts on Faith, Family and Fatherhood,” in 2014, highlighting songwriting and performing in his childhood. In support of early music education, Turner created The Josh Turner Scholarship Fund to assist other children following the same path, mirroring his own upbringing. Upcoming Events At Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino: Flogging Molly—March 13 For more info about this show and other great performances coming to the Events Center, or Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, visit Caesars.com/Harrahs-Ak-Chin or call 1.800.502.8000. $

Grammy-winning singer Crystal Gayle is an award-winning country music icon whose reign in the music business includes 20 No. 1 country hits, six albums certified Gold by the RIAA and the first female artist in country music history to reach platinum sales with her 1977 album, We Must Believe in Magic. Her list of platinum and gold was to be matched only by her awards and accolades. CMA’s “Female Vocalist of the Year,” for two consecutive years, she became a Grammy Award Winner for “Best Female Vocal Performance,” thanks to her beloved “Brown Eyes” – a song that she today admits she has never grown tired of singing. Crystal swept the Academy of Country Music Awards for three of their “Top Female Vocalist” statuettes. She is the recipient of three “American Music Awards,” voted by the nation as America’s “Favorite Female Artist.” Perhaps nothing sums up Crystal’s career achievements as well as being awarded with a star on the fabled Hollywood Walk of Fame in October 2009. Also famous for her nearly floor-length hair, she was voted one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People Magazine in 1983. Gayle also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame near Lynn’s star. In August 2016, the Academy of Country Music honored Crystal with the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award during the 10th Annual ACM Honors. Gayle was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in January 2017 by her sister and Opry legend Loretta Lynn. Tickets are $40 advance/$50 if purchased after January 19. The event is for all ages. Doors at 6 p.m/show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at MazatzalCasino.com or at the cashier cage. Crystal Gayle, only at Mazatzal Hotel & Casino! $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

MORE ON TAXABLE GAMING WINNINGS Reader Questions

I

n my last article (December 2019), I outlined several tax issues regarding winnings at the casino. I got a lot of rants from readers who think taxation of any winnings is ridiculous and who think the limits should be increased. Mostly, I got more questions about specific situations. So, I’ve tried to summarize and clarify with some additional information below! Gambling winnings are always taxable income and must be reported on your tax return. Any winnings from a lottery, raffle, casino, horse or dog track, just to list a few examples, is considered extra income. Caution: The fair market value of any noncash prizes such as trips or cars must be reported as gambling income as well. The full amount of your gambling winnings for the year must be reported on line 21 of the IRS Form 1040. Be careful to note that you cannot use Form 1040A or Form 1040EZ. This rule applies regardless of the win amount and regardless of whether or not you received a Form W-2G. Caution: You can’t reduce your gambling winnings by your gambling losses and report the difference. Your records should always show your winnings separately from your losses. In other words, you must report the full amount of your winnings as income and claim your losses as an itemized deduction (but only up to the amount of your winnings). If you itemize deductions, you can deduct your gambling losses for the year on line 28 of Schedule A, Form 1040. And, remember that you cannot deduct gambling losses that are more than your winnings! Caution: Generally, nonresident aliens cannot deduct gambling losses on Schedule A, Form 1040NR. In order to be able to deduct gambling losses, accurate records of all gambling winnings and losses must be maintained. This log must include the following information at the very least: 1. The name and address or specific location of the gambling establishment 2. The date, time and type of wager or wagering activity that was made 3. The names of all people present with you at the gambling establishment 4. The amount of money that was won or lost

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2020 | azgamingguide.com

Caution: The IRS may want to see additional items as evidence of gambling wins and losses. These items can include, but don’t have to be limited to: Canceled checks, bank withdrawals, credit records, check cashing statements, and the win-loss statements from the gambling establishment. When playing slot machines, make sure to always record the machine number, date and time played, along with all wins and losses. When playing keno, bingo, or the lottery, keep all copies of the tickets purchased with dates along with wins and losses. When playing table games, keep a record of the table number and whether the credit was issued at the pit or cashier’s cage. We highly recommend consulting with a Certified Public Accountant regarding any tax issues resulting from your gambling wins and losses. $

Three older ladies were discussing the travails of aging. One said, “Sometimes I catch myself in front of the refrigerator with a jar of mustard in my hand and can’t remember if I need to put it away or start making a sandwich.” The second lady chimed in, “Yes, sometimes I find myself on the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or down.” The third one responded while rapping her knuckles on the table. “Well, I’m glad I don’t have that problem; knock on wood.” Then she said, “Wait, someone must be at the door; I’ll get it!” I believe in loyalty.
