EDITOR’S NOTE

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY Celebrate Love, Admiration & Friendship

T

he modern version of Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th each year, is rooted in the traditions of the Catholic Church. Over time, meanings, traditions, and many other things change. But at the root of Valentine’s Day is a simple message: recognize love, admiration and friendship in your life. Of course, in modern times, gifts, extravagant gestures, marriage proposals and so on are certainly at the heart (sorry, I couldn't resist the pun) of February 14th. However, this day is not just for couples. Let’s take a look at the core of St. Valentine’s Day. LOVE (Noun) 1. An intense feeling of deep affection. 2. A great interest and pleasure in something. ADMIRATION (Noun) Respect and warm approval. FRIENDSHIP (Noun) The emotions or conduct of friends. Regardless of your relationship status the definitions for the three nouns above are something everyone can relate to in one way or another. I’m fond of saying “Every day is Valentine’s Day!” So, take a minute to reflect on what you can do to spread more love, admiration, and friendship around in your life and attract more love, admiration and friendship into your life. And, you don’t have to focus on all three, you can just focus on one. Like love. I LOVE playing slots! Thank You!

PLAYERS TALK QUESTION: What day is the best day to play? ANSWER: Any day. Personally, I prefer to play on a day and at a time when I feel lucky, rested, free of distractions, grateful and happy. And I also prefer to play on a day and at a time where I’ll encounter the least amount of people in the casino. QUESTION: What slot machine is the best one to play? ANSWER: Any slot machine. Gambling is a matter of personal choice. That being said, video poker generally offers the highest rate of return to the player over time once you verify the pay table you are playing, and critically, involves player skill. After video poker, video keno pay tables can be verified for their rates of return. Beyond that, the higher the denomination slot machines have higher rates of return. Readers should note that other than a select few casino employees, regulatory agents at the tribal and state levels, and the slot machine game designers themselves (like the publishers of this magazine) there is no way of knowing the long run payback percentage of the slot machine you are playing at. Even if you know the long run payback percentage of the slot machine you are playing at, winning and losing is all based on the outcome of the random number generator. QUESTION: What should I bet? ANSWER: You should always wager within your budget and never over your head. Maintain an accurate budget for all your personal expenses, including gaming. Be aware of problem gambling behavior for yourself and your loved ones. More information about problem gambling awareness can be found online at ProblemGambling.AZ.gov. That being said, make sure to bet all lines or all ways on a slot machine at a minimum. Make sure to bet enough to qualify for any bonuses or progressive jackpots to ensure you are playing at the maximum payback over time. If those wagers are too high for your budget, don’t play the game. Understand that many bonus events occur, on average, every 100 to 200 spins over time. So, if you can cover all the lines and qualify for the bonus event with a 40 credit bet on a penny machine, that’s a 40 cent wager per spin. This means, you’ll need $40 to $80 just to experience a bonus, on average, over time. If your gambling philosophy is to wager at most a few dollars (or a handful of spins, say less than 100) on a slot and then get up and try the next slot, good luck to you. I can think of no better way to guarantee ending up feeling frustrated along with being a monumental loser every time you enter a casino. Remember, gambling is betting on the outcome of a completely random event and the casino has the long run advantage. $

PLAYING SEVEN CARD STUD Starting Hands, Betting Advice & More

W

ith the fast and furious spread of Texas Hold ’Em poker, you might not find many Seven Card Stud tables in the Valley, but it’s a good game. Learning to play helps with reading opponents and possible hands. Those skills translate well to Texas Hold ’Em and Omaha. Seven Card Stud is played with a standard English deck. There are no community cards, and nothing is wild, but the action, which has a lot to do with having five betting rounds. In a typical $4-8 limit game, each player antes 50 cents. Like Hold ’Em, you get two cards down but then receive a third card face-up. The lowest card showing (starting with the deuce of clubs) is forced to bring it in for $2. Players may then call for $2 or raise to the full bet of $4. Or, they can be sissies and fold for free. Starting Hands If you aren’t the player forced to bring it in, you get to see your first three cards and the up card of each player before deciding to call or raise. Starting with three of a kind rolled-up is best, followed by a big pair in the hole like Aces or face cards. Next best is a pair of those with one in the hole and one showing. Other hands you’ll want to consider playing are three to a straight or three flush cards, especially with big cards. However, since you can see each player’s door card, you might have to dump a pair that can’t improve. If you have two 8s in the hole but see another 8 showing, you don’t have much chance of catching the case 8 to make trips. Often a player with an Ace or King up will raise. They may be bluffing and trying to steal the antes and the bring-in. If you don’t have much, go ahead and let them. Lots of Bets The $4 bets continue when the next card is dealt face up (fourth street), and then the wagers go to $8 after the fifth, sixth, and seventh cards. That’s a lot of betting rounds, and plenty of chances to punish poor play when you’ve made your hand early. Those extra cards are a tantalizing enticement to your opponents to stay in and draw-out on you. With that in mind, you’ve got to bet or raise your good hands to make it as expensive as

14 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2020 | azgamingguide.com

possible for anyone to keep calling. If you check or call with good early hands, you are just asking to get beat on the river. The fifth and sixth cards are delivered face-up, with the final card down and dirty. With three hidden cards, you can surprise opponents, but with four up-cards, they can surprise you too. So, you better learn how to read what hands are likely in a showdown! You can do that by memorizing which cards have been folded by players out of the action. That’ll give you an advantage when it comes to guessing what’s out there. If your opponents were trying to catch cards that have been folded, they are less likely to show you a full house. Likewise, you can use all the cards you’ve seen to decide whether to fold your hand or go to the river to make a winning hand. Good luck and have fun! $

FROM MY MAIL BAG Answering Reader Questions

T

his month I’ve decided to answer one of the many questions I get from my readers and fans. I get a lot of questions and I enjoy the interaction.

QUESTION: I found, after playing Blackjack a while, that in many cases it's good to stand on 15 against 17. Also, if a player starts with an Ace and 4, and gets a 10, it’s good to stand also against a dealer's 7, because in most cases the dealer will not have a high card underneath, and there's a big chance there will be an 8 or 9, underneath the dealer’s 7. I've done this trick that's not in the book numerous of times and the dealer busted more times against me than making a hand. Your opinions? Ablackjackplayer [sic] ANSWER: You are basing your conclusion on a very short trial, and in the short run anything can happen. If I randomly flip a coin there are two possible outcomes, a heads or a tails. Since each is as likely to come up when you flip it, there is a 50% chance of getting a heads or a tails. So if you flip the coin 10 times you would expect to get 5 heads and 5 tails, but you may get 10 heads or any variation, because in a short run trial anything is possible. If you got ten heads in a row, would you say that every time you flipped the coin it is going to be heads? The point is that if you flipped that coin 100,000 times your results would be very close to 50% heads and 50% Tails. In gambling there are two results, expected outcome and actual outcome. If actual outcome and expected outcome were always the same there would be no gambling. The player would always lose. In the short run, players do win, that's why people gamble. But in the long run, you will always lose if you play a negative expectation event. The casinos were built and stay in business because of the long run expectation. Eventually, expected outcome and actual outcome become the same value. Basic strategy is based on millions of hand simulations run on an IBM mainframe by Julian Braun. From these simulations it was determined the best possible way to play each hand in Blackjack. A lot of players think that basic strategy assumes the dealer’s hole card is a 10. That's not true. It’s based on the possible card combinations with the dealer’s up card. You are correct that only 1 in 3 times the dealer will have a 10 underneath when showing a 7.

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2020 | azgamingguide.com

Getting back to your question, with an up card of a 7, the dealer will only break 25.99% of the time. This means roughly 3 out of 4 times the dealer will make a hand with a 7 showing. That makes standing on your 15 a loser 3 out of 4 times with a dealer up card of a 7. If you hit your 15, you will bust it 58% of the time or make a hand 42% of the time. Some simple math would show you that it is better to make a hand 42% of the time than win a hand 25% by standing. You are basing your "Trick" on a very short run trial. Over the long run you will come out worse playing your way than if you play the basic strategy way. If you play 4 hours a week with an average bet size of $10, standing on 15 against a dealer 7 will cost you $37 a year. 15 is a crummy starting hand to begin with for sure. Try keeping a log book over a year’s time and record every time this hand comes up. I think that you will find that hitting the hand is better than standing. Thanks for your question and good luck at the tables! I teach what it takes to be a card counter in my brand new book How To Become A Blackjack Jedi, available for sale now. BETTING STRATEGIES & SECRETS Repeat Bet, Double Bet & Press

T

here is no flawless betting strategy. As I pointed out in the article in January’s issue, the betting strategy I described would eventually result in a negative return. Something is missing, and it’s right there in front of my face on the InterBlock (IB) Roulette or Craps betting layouts-the Repeat Bet, Double Bet and Press (Craps only) buttons. The Repeat Bet button can be used to restore the prior bet. This is the first button I press after a win so I can catch a streak. Many people try to outthink the computers by using a strategy known as “Due Theory.” These types of gamblers understand statistics and think that a certain number, color or dice roll is due, simply because it hasn’t occurred in a long time, based on the statistics. I have witnessed many back-to-back-to-back wins. The easiest way to miss out on a streak is to not repeat a winning bet. The Double Bet button is for those of us who do not bet the max. This is because I double my bets using the “Take and Press” strategy. For example, if my Craps bet wins on a Come-out roll, then I repeat the bet, taking the winnings. If it wins again, I push the Double Bet button. If it wins again, I Press the bet by one betting unit until it eventually loses. The difference between Pressing and Doubling is this; the Double Bet button will double all bets. For example, I have six Street bets totaling $1.50. A Street bet wins. I repeat the bet. It wins again. I push the Double Bet button. My total bet is now $3. I win again. I continue to repeat, take and double until I lose. Note: there is no Press button on the Roulette machine betting layout. The IB electronic Craps machine does come with a Press button. When a Point is established, my betting strategy is slightly different, I use a “Press and Take” strategy. For example, after a point is established, I will PLACE $1 on the 5, 6, 8 and 9 for a total of $4. If I win, I will push the Press button which doubles the bet for the winning number only. My bet is now $5, not $8. If the same number wins again, I take the winnings. If I win again, I Press the bet and continue this strategy until a 7 is rolled. On a good streak, I eventually may reach the maximum bet. Given a choice of machines, I always play IB over the Aruze electronic Craps machine. I find the IB betting layout to be far more intuitive for those of us who play live Craps. That said, I occasionally find

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2020 | azgamingguide.com

myself at a casino which only offers the Aruze machine. I use the same betting strategy, but I must manually repeat, double or press my bets. I do find that the Aruze machine tends to have longer winning streaks than the IB machines. I have never made a $35 dollar bet on a single number, either Craps or Roulette; however I have made multiple bets, totaling more than $35 on the Craps machine. How is this possible when the maximum betting limit is $35? Here is the Craps betting secret. You can bet more than $35 on a single roll at the Craps table. How does that work? When a point is established, any multi-part bets made can be continuously pressed after each roll, until the bet is resolved. This allows you to exceed the $35 limit. Know the game. Enjoy! $ Writer Daniel Cruikshank lives in Arizona, is retired, and has been an Electronic and Live Table Games player for decades.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR WITH CAIFANES IN CONCERT AT HARRAH’S AK-CHIN ON FEBRUARY 15 Spanish rock band Caifanes takes to the stage at the Events Center at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on Saturday, February 15, 2020. Known for their live performances and breaking the stereotypes of what is the norm for a musician, Caifanes performs an alternative style both sonically and visually. Caifanes, formed in 1987 in Mexico City, set a name for themselves as the pioneers of Spanish rock music during a time when pop ruled the radio. Their self-titled debut album “Caifanes” established the band as the catalyst for the explosion of Spanish rock music, quickly earning them international success. Their sound is a fusion of the history and sounds of Mexico with British rock music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, taking inspiration from counterculture rock, alternative and goth style. Hailing from Mexico City, the band is comprised of members Saul Hernandez, Alejandro Marcovich, Sabo Romo, Alfonso Andre and Diego Herrera. During their early days in the late ‘80s, they paved the road for alternative music in Latin America creating timeless hits including “Afuera,” “Viento”, “Mátenme Porque Me Muero”, “Perdí Mi Ojo de Venado” and “La Celula Que Explota.”

ing to the stage in 2011, fans will delight hearing favorites from the band’s previous studio albums. “The Events Center at Harrah’s Ak-Chin has played host to some great entertainers since we opened in April 2019. And Caifanes is right there at the top,” said Michael Kintner, Director of Marketing and Operations. “We’ve heard great things about this band and look forward to having them perform.”

By the mid ‘90s, the band had written four albums, completed several international tours and performed hundreds of soldout shows. They are noted for selling out the largest stadium in their hometown, Auditorio Nacional, performing for more than 25,000 fans. While the band quickly found success and dominated the radio in Latin communities during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, they decided to take a break and pursue other musical projects. During the Caifanes hiatus, Hernandez, Andre, Romo and Herrera formed a new project to continue playing music. This time under a new name – Jaguares. The project included new musicians and most members of Caifanes, including the lead singer, making Janguares and Caifanes sound quite similar. Jaguares would go on to become another important name in the Spanish rock music scene for the next 15 years. After two successful runs with the two different bands, the original Caifanes members got back together in 2011 to play the world-famous music festival - Coachella. The band has been playing together ever since, touring both Latin America and North America.

Tickets for the Caifanes show start at $44.50 and are on sale through Ticketmaster. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. The featured magic show Criss Angel Raw—The Mindfreak Unplugged will perform on February 16. Flogging Molly, the Celtic, Punk and Rock sound infusion will kick off St. Patrick’s Day weekend on March 13 and Josh Turner will take the stage on March 27. For more information about these and other exciting shows and events coming to The Events Center, visit their website at Caesars.com/Harrahs-Ak-Chin. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

AM I SAFE AT THE CASINO? 10 Casino Safety Tips

D

ear Sami, I have more of a question for you rather than a rant or a rave. Last night I was at the casino and a security guard approached me and informed me that I need to hold my purse in my lap. At the time, I had it sitting in between my machine and the other person’s machine. I asked him why and he said that he didn’t want my purse to get stolen. Of course I understand and it makes sense that someone can snatch my purse a lot easier if I’m not holding on to it. However, I guess I just didn’t feel I needed to be that overly cautious. Somehow I’ve always just felt safe at the casinos with all the guards and the employees running around all the time. Do I have a false sense of security? I’ve never personally witnessed any occurrences at any of the casinos I go to, so I was wondering if you know whether theft is a problem at these places? How safe are the casinos? I really enjoy your column and I wanted you to know that your article is the first I read whenever I pick up a new Gaming Guide each month. Thank you and keep up the good work. Francis Lawson – Phoenix, AZ Francis, thank you very much for your kind words about my column and for being an Arizona Gaming Guide fan! If you’ve seen the movie Casino, then you surely remember Robert de Niro’s character as a casino manager and his narration about casino security – The dealers are watching the players. The pit bosses are watching the dealers. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The floor manager is watching the shift bosses. The casino manager is watching the floor manager. And, the “eye in the sky” is watching them all! Let’s face it, a casino is probably one of the safest places to be. Anyone who tries to do something there they shouldn’t be doing will most likely get caught. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautionary measures to keep yourself safe! Here are some simple and practical tips to protect yourself while at the casino: 1. Don’t use the slot trays. Slot trays weren’t meant to house personal belongings such as purses, wallets, keys and cell phones. Someone can easily reach in and grab these items without your knowledge. 2. Use the valet. Take advantage of the valet parking most casinos offer for free. A small tip, or even a nominal fee, is an insignificant price to pay for the added safety and peace of mind.

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2020 | azgamingguide.com

3. Make sure the machine has accepted your money. Watch the money as it goes into the machine and don’t look away until the machine has registered the inserted bill or ticket. 4. Be aware of your surroundings. Always be aware of the people that are playing next to you and standing around you. Be cautious of any person that is behaving in a suspicious manner. 5. Watch your purse. The safest way to carry a purse or hold it in your lap is in a crisscross fashion over the shoulder. It is much more difficult for someone to snatch the purse and run. 6. Ask for a security escort. If you’ve won a large sum of money, especially if several people witnessed your win, ask for a security escort to your car. Then, make sure you are not being followed home. 7. Guard your tax slip. Keep the tax slip in a secure location. Your name, address, social security number and other personal information is contained on tax slips given out by the casinos. 8. Put away your money. Don’t hold your money in your hand. When you’re at the cage or ticket machine, make sure to put away your money safely into your purse or wallet before you walk away. 9. When visiting the restroom, use the buddy system. The public restroom at the casino can be a very vulnerable place. Whenever possible, go with someone else who can watch your back. 10. Don’t get into an elevator with someone that makes you nervous. You can always wait for the next elevator if someone looks suspicious or makes you feel uncomfortable. Better to be safe than sorry. Have fun and stay safe! $

Baby tomato starts lagging behind and papa tomato gets really angry, goes back and squishes him and says “CATCH UP!” What did the baby strawberry say to the mama strawberry? “Mom! Help! I’m in a JAM!” Two pieces of toast (in the front seats), a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jam (both in the back seat) were caught speeding. The police officer came up to the car and the toast in the driver’s seat rolled down the window and asked, “What sems to be the problem officer?” The police officer looked at the vehicle’s occupants and said “All right!
