PLAYERS TALK QUESTION: What is the deal with [my favorite casino] getting rid of their best games? I really like playing [several slots] there and now I can’t! I guess I’ll look for the games at [the other casinos] but I’m having a difficult time justifying changing over because of the drive and [the different players club card program]. James A.—Phoenix, AZ ANSWER: James, we understand your pain! We have seen so many slots, video poker and video keno machines go the way of the dinosaurs at a casino, and from casinos across the country. It’s not a fun feeling knowing your favorite games are gone. The loss is similar to misplacing your favorite toy as a child. As creatures of habit, we rely on security and stability to see us through. As fans of casino games, we understand the randomness of the outcomes of our bets but still look for regularity where we can find it. Relying on your favorite slot is what sees us through the sessions where there are no big wins or jackpots as opposed to when we can walk out ahead. All we can say is to embrace the change with a positive attitude and move on. Remember, you are not alone. There are other guests at your favorite casino who also just lost their favorite game, possibly yours, possibly a different one. And, don’t forget, the casino is going through the same situation you are. They also have to embrace change or be left behind. However, you are looking for an explanation as to why your slot left. Sympathizing with the casino may not be what you want to hear! The Slot Department in a casino keeps a close eye on many variables concerning all the slot machines on their casino floor. Most importantly, how much money a specific slot (or group of slots) makes on average each day over the long run. If that number begins to drop to an unacceptably low value, change is inevitable. Another factor can be competitive in nature. Your favorite casino may notice what games other nearby properties are offering and feel the need to add those games (or similar ones) to their floor. So, “older” slots (like your favorite one) get the axe. In addition, we are aware of several casinos in Arizona who are forced to use the “duct tape & bailing wire” approach to certain older slots. Those older games make a relatively large amount of money on average for them and they can’t afford to remove them from the floor just yet. But, and herein lies the rub, these slots are no longer serviced or supported by the manufacturer (similar to owning a manual transmission 2009 Pontiac—the last year that brand of car was made). The slot manufacturer has moved on to more modern platforms also, for a variety of reasons. Now the Slot Department has to scramble to find spare parts or spare games on the used slot machine market which, believe me, is not big (and there isn’t an AutoZone store for slot machines you can just walk into and buy the part you need!). Eventually, the casino just can’t find the parts anymore and your slot goes away. In any event, we suggest you communicate (politely) how you feel to the slot team at your favorite casino. $

SUPER 4 PROGRESSIVE BLACKJACK Available Now At Casino Arizona

f there’s one thing I’ve learned in casinos, it’s that Blackjack is indestructible. It can’t be killed with death-rays from space. It’s perfect. Las Vegas couldn’t kill the game’s popularity by changing from single-deck to six-deck shoes or paying 6-for-5 on Blackjacks or taking away re-split Aces. Fortunately, those of us who play in the enlightened and fairer state of Arizona can still re-split our Aces; and we still get paid 3-for-2 on Blackjacks. Still, inventors keep trying to improve the game by adding side bets. Winning At Super 4 The reason casinos go along with new bets is that Blackjack is very close to a break-even proposition for the best players. So, I understand the goal of improving the casinos’ bottom line. And I can ignore the bonus bets and stick to basic strategy and card counting if I wish.

Unlike most Blackjack side bets, Super 4 tables have a large running progressive jackpot that grows larger with each wager. And, there are multiple ways to win. To start with, should the dealer’s up-card be an Ace, you’ve got an instant winner of at least $10. If the dealer has a Blackjack, you’ll win at least $25.

Change Is Good On the other hand, I don’t want to be an ostrich with my head in the sand or shoved where my wallet goes. And, there are millions of people who like side bets. There are even more people who like jackpots, or slot machines. Otherwise they wouldn’t be so popular! So grudgingly, I accept that some things, like my hair color, change over time. Bummer. And, I guess it’s not a bummer to be able to win a substantial jackpot while also enjoying a Blackjack game. You can win $5,000 on the Super Bonus at Spanish 21, or $8,000 with a Buster Blackjack hit. You can even win $25,000 at Lucky Ladies. Of course, each of those takes a $25 side wager. What’s new in town is Super 4 Progressive Blackjack by the casino games manufacturer AGS (they make slot machines too!). It’s only available right now at Casino Arizona, but for a side bet of just $5, you have a chance to win a progressive that sits at nearly $100,000 as this issue went to print! As with other Blackjack side bets, your wager wins and loses based on your hand and the dealers, but you still play standard Blackjack rules. The big difference is that when you play this new bet, it’s like taking all-day insurance on your hand. You won’t mind if the dealer has an Ace-up or makes a Blackjack because that’s when you win.

When the dealer does have a Blackjack, the dealer’s two cards and your two cards are combined to make a Poker hand. If you can’t make at least a pair, you’ll get the $25 payout. If you have a pair, the payout doubles to $50. Four cards of the same color pay $100, and a Flush pays $200. Then it gets interesting. The rest of the winning hands pay whatever the jackpot meters show. These include a Royal Flush in Diamonds (A-K-Q-J) ($98,210.00 at press time), Royals in the other suits ($47,426.00 at press time), plus a Straight and a Flush. There’s even a random, must-hit jackpot for just playing the wager. It is guaranteed to hit before it reaches $1,000. Super 4 might not change all my ideas about Blackjack side bets, but it’s a good start! Good luck and have fun! $

THE FLOW Using How The Cards Are Falling At The Table To Your Advantage

he Flow, by definition, is an unscientific description by Blackjack players of the way the cards are falling, either for the house or for the player.

For example, have you ever played Blackjack when it seems like every time you double you catch your 10 and every time the dealer shows a bust card they break? This is the description of The Flow of cards when they are in favor of the player. Of course, it goes the other way for the house as well. Here is something that pro players do every time before sitting down to play Blackjack—they scout the tables. The way they do this is to walk through the casino and look at all the tables. What they are looking for are tables where most of the players have more than a typical buy-in of chips in front of them. Players at tables tend to have similar results; either most are losing or winning. Find a table where players are winning and chances are The Flow of cards are in favor of the player. By doing this, it will increase the chances of you winning. Ask before entering a game mid-shoe. Otherwise, if The Flow changes from good to bad, the players at the table will all blame you. Here is another trick of the trade. If you sit down at any table and lose four hands in a row sit out until the end of the shoe, or switch tables, because The Flow is favoring the house. I call this "TJ's four hand rule." Additionally, if you find yourself pushing or losing on the hand of 20 or Blackjack more than a couple of times, change tables. Here's why; seventy percent of all the money that you will win playing Blackjack comes from the hand of 20 and Blackjack. If you are not winning those hands, The Flow is in the house’s favor and it's not going to be a winning table for you. Incidentally, that is also the reason that you never split Tens. Have you ever noticed that when a new player joins your Blackjack table mid-shoe often times the dealer’s very next hand is a Blackjack? There is no mathematical explanation that I know of that can justify it, but both dealers and players all agree it happens quite often. I have spoken with other professional players who tell me they reduce their bet size when someone enters the game mid-shoe just because it does happen so frequently. I personally don't think it makes any difference, it's just that there is someone to blame if it does happen. The dealer’s odds of getting Blackjack are the same as the player on each hand of a randomly shuffled shoe (about 1 in 21 times), so just because a new player sits down, the odds do not change! They remain the same.

The mathematical explanations that I provide in my column are based on a randomly shuffled shoe. For example, the player is at a –0.54% disadvantage at the beginning of a randomly shuffled six deck game, based on the rules of most of the casinos. However, it takes between 120 to 160 shuffles to completely randomize six decks. An observation that I have made is when the casino changes cards, which is usually every 24 hours or less, you will get extreme swings in The Flow of cards, mainly because they are not randomly shuffled. So keep this in mind if you are at a Blackjack table when they change the cards out or open a table.
