VOLUME 12 • ISSUE 12 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com
T
his may or may not come as a surprise to you, or you might think I may be sharing a little too much with this month’s letter, but, I love pigs. There, I said it! Especially slot machines with pig symbols, a pig theme, or anything hog related in the casino. I just can’t get enough! And, I must admit, I love pork too. Bacon, ham, tenderloin, ribs, the list could go on, but I think you get the picture. Moving on to my main point (about pigs) which is the reason behind my affection for all things “piggy” at casinos. Since metal was both an expensive and scarce commodity across Europe during the Middle Ages, most household dishes and jars were made out of an orange clay called “pygg” which was an extremely durable and economical alternative at the time. Households put away their money for safe keeping in these “pygg” jars. Eventually, they just became known as “pygg banks.” As a visual pun, potters just began shaping the “pygg banks” into the shape of a pig as a joke and so it has remained. That’s why pigs are lucky! And to top it all off, sauerkraut with pork is served on New Year’s Day in most parts of Germany, as cabbage leaves symbolize money and pigs are considered to be a good luck symbol. This custom originated with the German farmers who considered themselves fortunate to have a pig that could feed their families through an entire winter. If a German says to you “ich habe Schwein gehabt” or “I have had pig,” then what they are telling you is “I have had good luck.” Can you guess what I’ll be cooking up for my New Year’s Day feast? Have a lucky month!

PLAYERS TALK Q: I just wanted to say I’m so pleased [my favorite casino] is working so hard to keep everything clean. I love the smokefree air and I feel so much better knowing everyone has had their temperature checked on the way in the door. Can you please tell everyone you know from me “Thank you!” for the great job all the employees are doing. I’m getting up there in years and besides rare trips to the grocery store, the pharmacy, and to visit less than a handful of friends, my only way of getting out to see and talk to other people in person is to go to the casino. My kids and grandkids live in other states and won’t be visiting me for the holidays this year like they used to. Anyway, tell everyone “Thanks” from me for their hard work keeping us safe. It allows me to get out of the house every now and then. I’m sure the casinos are doing more than what I talked about that I didn’t mention but they sure are doing a great job! Great magazine! I love every issue! June Macdougall—Sun City, Arizona A: Thanks June! We all know how difficult 2020 has been on everyone from jobs to socializing to adapting to a different way of life. We are glad to hear how well you are coping and how you are still heading out to the casinos from time to time. Stay safe! And yes, casinos are doing a lot. Even behind the scenes. We thought we’d share with you, and all our readers, the following news about the Tohono O’odham Nation. On October 19, 2020, the Tohono O’odham Nation announced it is contributing $1 million each to the University of Arizona and Arizona State University to support their world-renowned medical researchers’ efforts to combat the COVID-19 coronavirus. The funding will come from the Nation’s 12% gaming revenue grants that are required under its compact to share with local community programs. Both universities will use the funds to mitigate the impact and disruptive consequences of COVID-19, including new testing methods and tools to enable the effective and equitable deployment of emerging technologies. Under the tribal-state gaming compact, the Nation and other tribes are required to share a percentage of gaming revenues with local governments and qualified nonprofits. The Nation has awarded more than 500 of these grants since enactment of the compact in 2003 and, with large awards such as these, the program allows for funding to come from multiple Fiscal Years. Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. said, “This virus is showing no signs of letting up, and until we have better testing, treatment, and a vaccine, our communities remain at risk and our economy will continue to falter. That is why the Nation made the decision to contribute these funds, which we were already committed to share, to support the world-class

research taking place right here in Arizona that is working to overcome the pandemic.” “Our success at Arizona State University is closely tied to our partnerships in the community and we are grateful for the support of the Tohono O’odham Nation, whose gift today will enable us to intensify our efforts to manage the complexities of this pandemic and prepare for future public health emergencies by investing in scientific preparedness,” said ASU President Michael M. Crow. “This generous investment will be put to use to help serve communities across the state.” "The University of Arizona is proud to partner with the Tohono O'odham Nation, particularly as our main campus is located on their ancestral homelands,” said University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. "As Arizona's land-grant university, our mission is to serve the entire state, and the Nation’s support will allow this work to continue and expand, and help Arizona emerge stronger from this pandemic." The Tohono O’odham Nation is a federally recognized tribe with more than 35,000 enrolled citizens. The Nation has the second-largest tribal land base in the United States, with more than 2.8 million acres of reservation land in central and southern Arizona. The Tohono O’odham Nation operates casinos at three locations in southern Arizona (Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why) and one in the West Valley near Glendale, AZ. Q: A long time ago, a guy told me that it’s possible to pull the handle in exactly the right way to hit something on a machine. Is that true? I don’t like pulling the handle, I’d rather just press the button if it doesn’t matter. Ed Mosley—Mesa, Arizona A: Ed, Oh boy! This is just another crazy casino myth that keeps circulating around! The internet, social media, and people at the casinos are just filled with fairy tales, falsehoods, and foolish hopes that a slot can be “beaten” with a simple pull of a handle or push of a button. If that were really true, the casinos and slot manufacturers would be bankrupt. First of all, there are no gears or levers or springs which control the outcome of a spin anymore on mechanical reel slot games. Both the video reels and the classic slot games with the sevens and bars are run off of a computer and a random number generator—they actually have been for many decades! Therefore, if you prefer pressing the spin button over pulling the handle, go ahead and do so because the result will be the same. Just as an additional side note: stopping the reels while they’re spinning by pressing the spin button, or by pulling the handle down quickly or holding it down, also has no effect on the outcome of the game. It just ends the spin quicker. Keep the questions coming! Write us at PO BOX 20636 Mesa, AZ 85277 or email us at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com. $

SHORT—HANDED POKER Tips On The Game, Odds & Players
W
ell, the good news is that we’ve still got some poker games going in Arizona. But if you’re used to fulltable ring games, forget about it. What we’ve got now are cubicle seven-handers. That’s not a problem for some players, but if you are worried about how to adapt and adjust your game, read on. Have The Odds Changed? To start with, don’t worry about your odds of picking up starting hands changing. You’ve got the same chance of seeing a pocket pair (about 5.8%) or an off-suit hand (about 70.6%) as you’ve always had. However, since there are fewer players, the hands go faster, and you’ll have more chances each hour to get premium starting hands. Unfortunately, that’s where some players get in trouble. you. Yeah, the other players are thinking like you too! The idea that you can wait for top-twelve hands (Top Pairs and AK – AQ) and make a profit short-handed is likely an illusion. With fewer players and more hands per hour, the blinds alone will chew into your bankroll and leave you gasping for air. In short-handed play, you’ve got to see more flops. Where the odds have changed is in the “per round hand value.” In a full-ring game, you’ll see top tier hands quite often, and a pre-flop raise often represents a top pair or Ace-King. Shorthanded games are different. Players don’t wait for top hands. They are more than happy to raise with a more comprehensive range of starting hands. And you are likely to see more raises and re-raises. Sometimes, you have to know where you stand! You don’t need Ace-Face every hand to play. You’ll find that KT and Ace-X are quality hands short-handed. If you are playing limit, keep in mind that where you could limp in a 9-handed game with Ace-suited and suited connectors and get value, you won’t see that in a six or seven-handed game. That’s because you won’t have many chances to call on the flop to a flush or a straight draw against three or more players. More flops grind-down to heads up short-handed, and playing heads up on a drawing hand is usually a losing proposition; the odds aren’t there. Not to immediately contradict myself, but keep in mind that your Ace-X has more value than usual. Just don’t be surprised when your Ace-6 makes two pairs and Aces and eights beat
14 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2020 | azgamingguide.com
Still, you can improve the size of your winning pots by always betting for value. You might be reluctant to bet on the end with a single pair, but it’s more likely to be good short-handed than in a full game. It helps if it’s a big pair, but often your kicker is going to be the key. Know Your Players It’s always good to know other players’ tendencies in a poker game, but it is critical short-handed because you will be bumping heads with them more often. If someone is running over the game, you better find out quickly if they are really holding hands, or just using their image to bluff (which is also more valuable short-handed). You’ll also need to know what range of starting hands your opponents are using. You can’t just assume they are playing the best hands. You’ve changed your requirements. So have they! What have you learned over the course of playing thousands of hands of poker? We’d love to hear your stories and your experiences. BLACKJACK AT DESERT DIAMOND I Give You My Report On Their Blackjack Offerings
A
s many of you know, we have a new casino that opened up in Phoenix, Desert Diamond Casino—West Valley Resort (WVR). I went out there to check out the Blackjack and report back to the readers of the Arizona Gaming Guide my findings and thoughts. WVR is a very nice casino with a great food court and bar. It has Blackjack tables in three different areas and the table minimum bets are mostly $15 and $25. I sat down to play some Blackjack and the rules are pretty much the same as all the casinos in Phoenix, but there are a couple of things that they do different. The first thing I noticed was the placement of the reshuffle card. They cut off less than one deck, which means that they deal more cards before shuffling. The next thing is that they only burn one card, but the biggest surprise was they offer surrender. Many players don't know what that is, or even how to play it because I don't think that there is another casino in Phoenix that offers it. However, if you know how to play it, you can add to the player advantage. In my one hour playing session at WVR, it added $60 to my winnings total. Here is how it works: If you are dealt a ten-six, or a nine-seven, for a hand of sixteen, and the dealer shows a ten, you will lose about 54% of all money bet in that situation. You can surrender that hand instead of playing it out for half your bet. For example, if I had a $25 bet out and received a hand of sixteen, I could surrender it for $12.50. Keep in mind when the dealer shows an up card of ten, they will only bust 21% of the time and end with a total of twenty or twenty-one 41% of the time. That's why if you have the option you should surrender your sixteen against a dealer up card of a ten. Knowing how to play this hand can make a big difference in your bottom line. It should be noted that you don't surrender the hand of eight-eight or Ace-five, even though these hands total sixteen. You will also surrender the hand of sixteen against a dealer nine or Ace (After the dealer has checked for Blackjack and doesn't have it). Additionally, you would surrender the hand of fifteen made up of ten-five, nine-six, seven-eight against a dealer ten or Ace, but
16 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2020 | azgamingguide.com
not the player hand of Ace-four. There is one more player hand that you should surrender if you are playing a six deck game and the dealer hits soft seventeen (Ace-six) which are the rules at WVR. If you receive the hand of eight-nine, ten-seven (seventeen) and the dealer shows an Ace and does not have Blackjack, you should surrender that hand as well. The dealer, when showing an Ace, will only break 11% of the time. If you have seventeen, the only way you win is if the dealer breaks, not very good odds against an Ace. By adding this to your playing strategy, you will be surprised how much of a difference it will make in your win/loss total. I live quite a distance from WVR but if I am going to play some serious Blackjack it’s my “go to” casino for sure. Send us an email at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com with the word “Blackjack” in the subject line if you have something to add about Blackjack at your favorite casino. $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. BETTING MAGIC—PART III How To Use The Built-In Functionality Of Electronic Table Games
T
his is the third of three articles on using the Magic Buttons that come with the InterBlock (IB) versions of the electronic Craps and Roulette machines. This article is devoted to Roulette. On the IB Roulette machine there are six buttons; these are: Neighbors, Splits (Black or Red), Red Snake, Complete and Finale. It is important to note that these buttons may not be displayed. If you don’t see them then look for the Hide Special Bets button. Pressing it should bring the Magic Buttons into view. NEIGHBORS Pressing this button will automatically place an equivalent bet on the neighbors to the left and right of the last number bet. The thinking is that the ball may land on the last number won, or its neighbors. The number of neighbors varies by Casino. Most e-Roulette machines make one neighbor bet for a total of three bets per button push. At Bucky’s Casino in Prescott, Arizona, the bet is two neighbors to the right and left for a total of five bets per button push. SPLITS Pressing this button will automatically place an equivalent bet covering two numbers of the same color that are right next to each other. Black Splits will cover 8/11, 11/10, 10/13, 17/20, 26/29, 29/28 and 28/31 for a total of seven bets. Red Splits does the same for red numbers next to each other, i.e., 9/12, 16/19, 18/21 and 27/30 for a total of four bets. I will sometimes bet these if a certain color is dominating statistically, 60% or better, and two or more of the split numbers are Hot. RED SNAKE Pressing this button will automatically place an equivalent bet that covers the red numbers that snake there way across the betting field. Starting from the left, this bet will cover 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 18, 21, 23, 27, 30, 32 and 36. This sequence could vary from Casino to Casino. For example, it could begin at 3, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32 and 34. In either case the bet would be the same, i.e., twelve numbers.
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2020 | azgamingguide.com
COMPLETE Pressing this button will automatically place an equivalent bet that covers all numbers with the exception of the green, 0/00. There are a total of 38 numbers counting the green. The payout is only 35:1 versus the true odds of 37:1. A losing venture in my humble opinion, best to avoid. FINALE Pressing this button will automatically place an equivalent bet that covers all numbers ending with a 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. There are five numbers ending in zero; four numbers ending in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, I will use this bet if I notice a trend of numbers, or numbers ending with the same number, repeating quite often. I always play Final Zero if the number that just won ends in 0. Call me superstitious. SUMMARY The amount of time to place bets on Roulette varies with Casinos. If you play e-Roulette and like to make numerous bets per spin, then I would strongly recommend using one of the canned betting options. Once the bets have been made you can then slide them to cover other numbers, Hot, Cold, birthdays, holidays, “luckies,” whatever. If you are betting quarters then keep in mind that some Magic Button bets may not meet the minimum of $1. You can make multiple Neighbor, Splits or Finale bets. You can also mix and match. Good luck! Talking Stick Resort, an enterprise of the Salt River PimaMaricopa Indian Community, kicked off November with the opening of a new high limit slots and gaming room. The reimagined gaming space comes as part of a series of renovations slated to open in the coming months and takes the place of what was formerly the property’s cigar lounge, Shadows. “Talking Stick Resort is continuously evolving to give our guests new, exciting experiences while on our property. Our new high limit lounge is the epitome of that effort,” said Ramon Martinez, Director of Public Relations at Talking Stick Resort. “We have long wanted a high limit room that echoed the energy and style shown throughout the property and this space does that.” Designed to rival any lounge in Las Vegas, the new high limit lounge is 6,250 square feet of luxury. The room is adorned with intricate chandeliers, mirrored columns and richly hued carpeting reflecting the colors of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community logo. Another nod to the tribal community is a full mural of the majestic Red Mountain, a symbol of home to the Pima and Maricopa people.

Caesars Rewards Loyalty Program Expands to 18 New Properties and Grows Membership by 20 Percent
Caesars Entertainment & William Hill Sign First NFL Team Sponsorship Together With Colts
Caesars Rewards, the largest gaming loyalty program in the world, has recently grown by 20 percent and 18 properties thanks to the merging of Caesars Entertainment and Eldorado Resorts in July. Following the unprecedented merger, the combined network of more than 55 world-class resorts across the U.S., now include destinations in Florida, Colorado, Ohio and St. Louis. Also, customers from each company’s legacy rewards programs were seamlessly integrated into the expanded Caesars Rewards loyalty program on day one. Members can now also use their loyalty currency anywhere in the enterprise, as well as match their status universally.
Caesars Entertainment and its exclusive sports betting partner, William Hill US, announced their first NFL team sponsorship together, becoming a sports betting partner of the Indianapolis Colts. The partnership highlights a new integrated way for the Colts, Caesars Entertainment and William Hill to engage with sports fans throughout the 2020 football season in Indiana.
“Caesars Rewards is a tremendous asset that allows us to understand the wants and needs of our customer database to more efficiently serve them,” said Anthony Carano, president and chief operating officer of Caesars Entertainment. “Now with our expanded network of properties and partnerships throughout the company’s portfolio, Caesars Rewards members have more ways to earn, spend and redeem, providing an impressive additional benefit for our customers.” Additionally, Caesars Entertainment proudly shares that for the third year running, Caesars Rewards was named No. 1 in the 2020 USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards for “Best Players Club.” For information on the expanded perks of Caesars Rewards as well as more on the advantages Caesars Rewards membership can bring and how to join, visit Caesars.com/myrewards. $

“In the digital age, and particularly this virtual world in which we find ourselves now, finding new ways to engage with our fans, partners and community is one of our top priorities,” said Roger VanDerSnick, Colts Chief Sales & Marketing Officer. “This partnership with Caesars Entertainment and William Hill will help us better connect with Colts fans everywhere as we navigate this very unique season in 2020 and offer a greater fan experience well into the future.” As part of the agreement, Caesars Rewards, the largest customer loyalty program in the industry, will sponsor a free-toplay "Pick 6 Predictor” game on the Colts Mobile App. The Pick 6 Predictor generates a series of questions, that fans predict the outcome of, before the upcoming games. Correct picks are rewarded with weekly prizes, and all participants are entered into a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas to stay at a Caesars Entertainment property. "Our company has deep roots in Indiana,” said Chris Holdren, Co-President of Sports and Online Gaming for Caesars Entertainment. “This expanded partnership with William Hill and our long relationship with the Indianapolis Colts deepens our strong ties within the community. fully – and successfully – held off the attempts of federal agents to seize their slot machines, protecting their right to operate a casino on their reservation and provide livelihoods for their tribal members. “We’re proud that we were Arizona’s first casino and are now the state’s newest casino,” said Bernadine Burnette, President of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation. “Gaming has been a part of our tribal community for the past three decades and has allowed us to provide financial security for our members and employees. Our upscale new casino will allow us to take gaming to an entirely new level while keeping a Native American look and feel – with design elements of earth, water, fire and basket-weaving that are so important to our culture.” The first-class We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort is connected to a new four-story covered parking structure and the existing 246room hotel that has received the coveted AAA Four Diamond award every year since it opened in 2006. The casino shares its name with the upscale We-Ko-Pa Golf Club across the street that boasts the consistently award-winning Saguaro and Cholla courses. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
CASINOS POST LOCKDOWN The Good, The Bad, The Ugly—Part II
S
o I’m still getting letters and emails from our readers and fans six months after some Arizona casinos reopened in the middle of May. Even more after last month’s article!
Let’s look at what’s on your minds… Everyone still loves how clean everything is and wants it to stay that way. Everyone prefers the casinos where there is no smoking indoors. (Obviously the smoking ban in most properties hasn’t affected business just based on the observed crowd size!) Some readers don’t appreciate other patrons who walk around pretending to drink (or pretending to smoke where it’s still allowed) as an excuse to keep their masks down. Look, I’m good with the first two. Cleaning is important and should always be top priority, even post-pandemic. I think all of the procedures casinos are performing should remain. Ultimately, the next “super bug” is just around the corner. Protecting employees and guests the way casino management is right now is an excellent reason to continue. Smoking should stay out too. Now, the last comment about the mask being down. Are us
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | December 2020 | azgamingguide.com
gamblers the rebellious type, or just forgetful? Either way, I don’t get it. Are we children? Does a casino employee really have to remind us all the time to put our mask back on when we are at the casino? Is that fun, being reminded? Not for me! That’s why casino employees aren’t reminding me to put my mask back on. Hopefully, the patrons identified by our readers are just forgetful because they are having too much fun! Let’s just be clear, facts are facts. Here’s what the Oxford Dictionary defines COVID-19 as: (noun) an acute respiratory illness in humans caused by a coronavirus, capable of producing severe symptoms and in some cases death, especially in older people and those with underlying health conditions. It was originally identified in China in 2019 and became pandemic in 2020. Where acute is: (adjective) (of a bad, difficult, or unwelcome situation or phenomenon) present or experienced to a severe or intense degree. And respiratory is: (adjective) relating to or affecting respiration or the organs of respiration. [Meaning the nose, mouth, and lungs!] That’s why we are inundated with messaging (in and out of the casino) to wash hands frequently, cover the nose and mouth, and keep at least 6 feet away from others. Especially when indoors and around people who aren’t from your household! $
