L
ooking for something fun to do? Why not give Bingo a try? Bingo is not your grandmother’s game anymore! Both males and females of all different ages enjoy playing Bingo. Today, over 40% of Bingo players are 35 years old or younger. And, several surveys have shown the number one reason for playing Bingo is for personal enjoyment and the social interaction. Winning money actually comes in fifth place. Playing Bingo is not only fun but it’s great for your health! One study from Cornell University concluded that people who played Bingo fared much better at certain mental activities than those who did not play the game. Numerous studies have also shown that Bingo players are happier and have a better overall satisfaction with life. Take a look at our feature story on Casino Arizona’s Bingo hall on page 20, then call a friend or a family member, grab a couple of Bingo daubers (don’t worry, they sell them if you don’t have one) and get ready for some great entertainment. And, who knows? You may have the chance to yell out BINGO! In the 1500’s, the Italians created a game called “Lo Giuco de Lotto,” which was very similar to the Bingo game we know and love today! The first game of “Bingo” in the United States was played on December 17, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia at a county fair! At that time, the game was actually called “Beano” because it was played with beans. A toy salesman from New York, Edwin Lowe, watched the game being played at the fair and was excited by how involved the participants were. He brought the game back to New York and its popularity soared. Whenever players yelled out “Beano” it sounded so close to “Bingo” that it was eventually just referred to by that name.
96% of Bingo players have won a game at least once! There are 1,474,200 unique Bingo card combinations that can occur in 75-ball Bingo. The largest Bingo game recorded in history had 60,000 players and took place at New York’s Teaneck Armory. 10,000 more people were turned away. Americans spend more than $90 million per week on Bingo. Russel Crowe used to work as a Bingo caller before his acting career took off. The father of actress Catherine Zeta Jones used his Bingo winnings to pay for her acting classes. BINGO!

PLAYERS TALK
Q: Dear AZGG, Last night I was at the casino and a security guard approached me and informed me that I need to hold my purse in my lap. At the time, I had it sitting in between my machine and the other person’s machine. I asked him why and he said that he didn’t want my purse to get stolen. Of course, I understand and it makes sense that someone can snatch my purse a lot easier if I’m not holding on to it. However, I guess I just didn’t feel I needed to be that overly cautious. Somehow, I’ve always just felt safe at the casinos with all the guards and the employees running around all the time. Do I have a false sense of security? I’ve never personally witnessed any occurrences at any of the casinos I go to, so I was wondering if you know whether theft is a problem at these places? How safe are the casinos? I really enjoy picking up a new Gaming Guide each month. Thank you and keep up the good work. Francis Lawson – Phoenix, AZ A: Francis, thank you very much for your kind words and for being an Arizona Gaming Guide fan! If you’ve seen the movie Casino, then you surely remember Robert de Niro’s character as a casino manager and his narration about casino security – The dealers are watching the players. The pit bosses are watching the dealers. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The floor manager is watching the shift bosses. The casino manager is watching the floor manager. And, the “eye in the sky” is watching them all! Let’s face it, a casino is probably one of the safest places to be. Anyone who tries to do something there they shouldn’t be doing will most likely get caught. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautionary measures to keep yourself safe!
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2021 | azgamingguide.com
This pandemic, the economy, change of government leadership and many other reasons can make people uncertain about the present and fearful about the future which can lead to desperate behavior. Here are some simple and practical tips to protect yourself while at the casino: Watch Your Purse And Wallet. Just as the casino security personnel cautioned our reader, pay close attention to your purses and wallets! Ladies, the safest way to carry a purse or hold it in your lap is in a crisscross fashion over the shoulder. It is much more difficult for someone to snatch the purse and run. Men, never carry your wallet in your back pocket. It’s in a much more secure location when in a front pocket! Put Away Your Money. Don’t hold your money in your hand. When you’re at the cage or ticket machine, make sure to put away your money safely into your purse or wallet immediately before you walk away. Guard Your Tax Slip. Keep the tax slip you receive for hand pays in a secure location. Your name, address, social security number and other personal information is contained on tax slips given out by the casinos.
Don’t Use Any Slot Trays. Slot trays weren’t meant to house personal belongings such as purses, wallets, keys and cell phones. Someone can easily reach in and grab these items without your knowledge.

PLAYERS TALK
(Continued from page 6)
Always Watch Your Machine. Always keep an eye out on the machine you’re playing and don’t turn your back, not even for a second. It doesn’t take very long for someone to press the “Cash Out” button, grab the ticket and run!
When Visiting The Restroom, Use The Buddy System. The public restroom at the casino can be a very vulnerable place. Whenever possible, go with someone else who can watch your back.
Make Sure The Machine Has Accepted Your Money. Watch the money as it goes into the machine and don’t look away until the machine has registered the inserted bill or ticket.
Don’t Get Into An Elevator With Someone That Makes You Nervous. You can always wait for the next elevator if someone looks suspicious or makes you feel uncomfortable. Better to be safe than sorry.
Ask A Casino Employee To Watch Your Machine. Don’t trust that a complete stranger will keep an eye on your machine and definitely not the credits in your game! If you need to leave the machine for any reason, don’t leave money in the game. Always, always, always cash out your money – even if you’re just simply getting up to get an ashtray close by or calling over an attendant. This same rule applies for table game players.
Take Advantage Of Casino Services. Use the valet parking because a small tip, or even a small fee, is an insignificant price to pay for the added safety and peace of mind. Ask for a security escort to your car if you’ve won a large sum of money. Then, make sure you’re not being followed home.
Be Careful With Free Slot Play. If you download free slot play onto your machine, be aware that you must play through all the slot play before you can cash out. In other words, if you download $20 but only play with $5, then when you cash out you will only receive the amount you won using the $5. The leftover $15 in free slot play will be left in the machine. All too often, players aren’t aware and walk away from a machine with credits remaining.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings. Always be aware of the people that are playing next to you and standing around you. Be cautious of any person that is behaving in a suspicious manner. Careless behavior gives people a reason to lurk around the casino watching and waiting for an easy opportunity. Have fun and stay safe! Keep the questions coming! BLACKJACK PROP BET 21 + 3 WITH TOP 3 Bet On Your Cards & The Dealer’s Upcard
T
he game of blackjack is more than 100 years old and as popular as ever. Still, in the world of entertainment, casinos and marketers are continually trying to bring new life to everyday products. Slot machines started as all wood and metal contraptions with three spinning reels that paid out a few coins. Today’s devices are wildly different, computer-driven video monoliths that sing songs, play bits of movies, and transfix us for hours. Blackjack doesn’t have quite the panache, but it has a tremendously loyal following and a very low house edge. There have been some changes to the game as it evolved from mostly single deck hand-pitch games to six deck shoes, but there were no changes to speed up the game or grab more bucks from its relatively mild house edge other than shuffle machines until side bets came along. That’s why there are new variations and dozens of bonus bets popping up like prairie dogs at casinos across the state. And like the latest slot machines, I have to try every side bet variation I see because it’s a new adventure. I will admit that it took me several years to give 21 + 3 a try, but I found it an exciting mixture of blackjack and poker. Just don’t expect the game to move along like a standard 21 table. And it’s not the dealer’s fault, so tip often! In 21 + 3, you make your regular blackjack wager, and if you want (why are you sitting at that table if you don’t wish to?), you can make a wager on the first three cards most important to you: your first two cards and the dealer upcard. Regardless of what you draw and your blackjack wager’s outcome, the side bet is based on that first three-card poker hand. Any straight, flush, three-of-a-kind, or straight flush pays 9 to 1. That seems easy enough, right? The six deck payoff has a small house edge of about 3.25%, which is good. But wait, there’s more. Now how much would you pay? The More is Called “Top 3” Although a blackjack wager and a 21 + 3 wager are plenty for
14 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2021 | azgamingguide.com
most players, if you are of a needy type (like me) who wants more than constant input and instant gratification, you can also make the Top 3 wager. And that bet is exactly what it sounds like. To win the Top 3 payout, you have to make the standard blackjack wager and the 21 + 3 bet. Then you’ll have the privilege of making the Top 3 bet. Again, the payoff is based on the same three cards: your first two cards and the dealer’s up card. You’re shooting for the big bucks with the Top 3 wager. Although there are several variations, the payable I’ve seen locally has a top win of 270 to 1 for a suited three of a kind (like three Jack of hearts). The second payoff is 180 to 1 for a straight flush, and the final win is 90 to 1 for three-of-a-kind. If you catch one of those great hands, you’ll also get the +3 payoff of 9 to 1 on the first bonus wager. Whether you win the blackjack hand is another story. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. WHERE ARE THE TOURNAMENTS? I’m On The Hunt For Blackjack Tournaments, Out Of State
T
he community of blackjack tournament players here in Arizona was a thriving one until the COVID-19 pandemic came along in 2020. Since that time, Arizona has been without blackjack tournaments. Fortunately for avid tournament players such as myself, the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas Nevada has been holding blackjack tournaments about once a month in 2021. I played in their tournament held January 10-12, and recently their $75,000 tournament held February 26-28, where 1st Place paid $40,000! It is amazing how many players from Phoenix I see at these tournaments, which by the way are always sold out. The tournaments are conducted a little differently than what I am used to, but now that I am accustomed to the format I actually favor it. Tournament Breakdown The first round begins, but instead of the seven tables of six players per table per round, like their old format, they now use seven tables of three players per table, (due to social distancing). The player with the top chip count per table advances to the next round after eighteen hands. They do a chip count after hand seventeen. With the old format, you had a one in six chance of advancing to the next round by luck alone. Now you have a one in three chance of making the next round. These are, obviously, much better odds and result in a better chance of advancing. Having better odds for the player is always a plus with me! This tournament has a round one, round two, a quarter final, a semi final, and a final. The final has six players, three players at two tables. They take the top chip count player from each of the two tables. Then, the player with the third highest chip total from those two tables also goes to the final table of three. The other three players who didn’t make the top three, are awarded fourth, fifth, and sixth place. The remaining three can chop the prize money or play it out, but they have to be unanimous in a chop, otherwise they play for first, second and third. First place in this tournament paid $40,000, second $10,000, and third $7,000. They also paid through 42nd place, so if you made the quarter final you won some prize money.
16 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2021 | azgamingguide.com
With this tournament, upon entering, they put your name in a drawing for $100 in “play until you lose” promotional chips. I am happy to say I have had my name drawn in each of the last two tournaments. Nothing like starting out with a $100 in free chips to kick off your trip! The Golden Nugget also gives you a $50 food credit with your entry fee good for any of their dining establishments. You can get a discount on their rooms with your entry fee as well. The tournament is run extremely well and is a very smooth and fun tournament to participate in. It is amazing to me that the Arizona casinos don’t follow suit and start hosting tournaments again. The Las Vegas tournaments are filled with players from Arizona, their wives and girlfriends every month. Plus, they always sell out. Imagine the revenue that the Arizona casinos pass on each month. But, I guess that's why I am not in charge of the casinos. If you have an interest in learning how to play blackjack tournaments or would like to improve your tournament skills, my new book, How to become a Blackjack Jedi by TJ Jorgensen, is available on Amazon in both hard copy and eBook format. Who knows, you might even improve your overall blackjack playing skills too! $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the World Series Of Blackjack. His newest book “How To Become A Blackjack Jedi” is available online at Amazon.com.

THE BEST VIDEO POKER GAMES Make Sure You Keep These Pay Tables In Mind
A
rizona doesn’t offer the best pay tables for video poker, unfortunately. Every now and then you can find a hidden gem, even in a low denomination. But, overall, you need to make the decision whether or not it’s worth investing your money in a video poker game that doesn’t have the best payback percentage. However, don’t forget that playing with a player’s card, participating in promotions (such as earn-and-get), and taking advantage of all the comps that are offered to you by the casino can add up to 2% (sometimes even more) to the overall payback percentage. So, if the video poker game you want to play isn’t the “full-pay” version, then try to find the pay table that comes
as close to the “full-pay” version as possible. The percentage due to the comps can make up for a “short-pay” game. I think it’s always best to know what the “full-pay” version is so at least you can compare against what you find when you walk in to your favorite casino. To help out with that task I’ve listed the pay tables for six of the most popular video poker games. Note that all the payouts listed below are for a max bet of five credits for simplicity. Aside from the Royal Flush, divide by five to calculate the one credit pays. The payback percentages listed below are at maximum bet and using optimal play. $

Arizona Dept. Of Gaming Reports $17.6 Million In Tribal Gaming Contributions For Q3 FY2021
Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Launches New SAVVY Business Impact Group
The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) announced $17,631,406 in tribal gaming contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund for the State’s third quarter of Fiscal Year (FY) 2021. This amount represents a 4 percent decrease when compared to the same quarter of FY2020.
In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8th), Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino has announced the creation of SAVVY, a Business Impact Group (BIG) focused on the empowerment, support, and advancement of women within the company. The SAVVY BIG launched with a ZOOM Kickoff meeting to welcome members, identify the purpose and set goals.
"I am grateful for our strong relationship with Arizona Tribes, whose gaming contributions help fund instructional improvement programs like classroom size reduction, teacher salary increases and dropout prevention, reimbursement to hospitals for unrecovered trauma and emergency services costs, the enhancement and restoration of Arizona's diverse wildlife resources, the promotion tourism within the state, and more," said Ted Vogt, Director, ADG. "While we did see a small decrease in contributions this quarter, I believe that the overall strength of Arizona’s economy and the resiliency of Tribal gaming in the state will make this downturn short-lived." Tribal gaming contributions to the Arizona Benefits Fund for the third quarter of State FY2021 follow: Instructional Improvement Fund/Education $ 8,556,115 Trauma and Emergency Services Fund $ 4,278,058 Arizona Department of Gaming operating costs $ 2,000,000 Arizona Wildlife Conservation Fund $ 1,222,302 Tourism Fund $ 1,222,302 Problem Gambling $ 352,629 TOTAL Q3 FY2021 $17,631,406 Per the Arizona Tribal-State Gaming Compact, Tribes with casinos contribute 1 to 8 percent of their Class III gross gaming revenue to the state, cities, towns and counties. Currently, there are 25 Class III casinos in Arizona, which ADG regulates with Arizona tribes. $

Each BIG within Harrah’s is led by members of the management team. Angie Groeneveld, Director of Hospitality, will act as SAVVY’s Senior Level Sponsor, and Donata Cobb, the Events, Promotions, Entertainment, and AV Marketing Manager, will serve as the Executive Sponsor. Other required roles and officers for the group will be elected after the group members are finalized. “It’s the perfect day to launch the SAVVY BIG because it’s International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women,” said Groeneveld. “This member-led group will provide the potential for personal and professional networking and development, as well as opportunities to give back to our community. I’m so happy to be a part of it.” The SAVVY BIG is for team members and their peer supporters who have common goals and are committed to Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino’s diversity and inclusion strategy. BIGs are staff-led groups and are inclusive to all team members who support the BIG’s mission. The goals of each BIG are: Promote cultural awareness and education Develop team members personally and professionally Drive innovation and strategic business initiatives Support diverse team member recruitment and retention Foster a positive company image in communities
This is the second BIG created by Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. The SALUTE BIG for Military team members and their allies was created September 2019. $

Harrah’s Ak-Chin Understands The Importance Of Giving Back And Is A Catalyst For Positive Change
Nestled into the Santa Cruz Valley of Southern Arizona, the Ak-Chin Indian Community is just 35 miles south of Phoenix in the northwestern part of Pinal County. The Community is steadfast in its efforts to preserve its culture, language, and traditions—not just for themselves but also to impact neighboring communities and the world positively. In 1988, when the U.S. Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act—paving the way for the country’s Native American communities to operate casino-style gaming on tribal lands—the Ak-Chin Tribal Council looked at the many benefits to tribes that were possible as a result of Indian Gaming. The opportunity for economic self-sufficiency and secure financial resources to invest in infrastructure and social services programs for tribal members were of utmost importance.
Recognizing the Community’s location and wanting the best opportunity for success, the Ak-Chin Tribal Council sought a management partner that would work alongside tribal leaders to build and grow a successful gaming enterprise. “We chose to partner with Harrah’s, part of Caesars Entertainment,” says Ak-Chin Indian Community Chairman Robert Miguel. “Their long and successful history managing quality gaming and entertainment venues and their commitment to work alongside our tribal leaders and invest with us were deciding factors. Now, more than 25 years later, we continue to reap the benefits of this successful partnership.” Over the past 25 years, as the Casino has expanded to include 529 guestrooms, a variety of dining experiences, a spa, and fitness center, and an events center, one thing has remained the same - Harrah’s continues to invest in the community through a host of activities both onproperty and within the tribal community as well. One such program is Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino HERO Program. The goal of HERO is to strengthen organizations and programs in the communities where employees and their families live and work. The employee-based volunteer program enables Harrah’s staff and their families to make noteworthy and visible contributions to the community by donating their time, skills, expertise, and compassion to dozens of volunteer projects throughout the community. In addition, the HERO Committee funnels in-kind and monetary donations ($50,000 in 2020) into the community.
Despite the pandemic and decreased in-person volunteer opportunities, 90 percent of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino employees still volunteered more than 9,000 hours to such organizations as Sun Lakes Lions Foundation; Maricopa Lions Club; Casa Grande Roller Derby; Maricopa Police Foundation; American Cancer Society-Maricopa Relay for Life; HHHOHP Stand Down for Veterans; United Services Blood Drive; Area Agency on Aging; Pat Tillman Foundation; F.O.R. copa Food Drive; Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation; Maricopa Against Abuse; United Way of Pinal County; and Feed My Starving Children. “As the largest employer in Pinal County, Harrah’s Ak-Chin employs nearly 1,000 people, tribal and non-tribal,” said Michael Kintner, Senior Vice President, and General Manager. “One of my predecessors helped create the Harrah’s Development System (H.D.S.), for members of the Ak-Chin Indian Community to be integrated into key areas of the casino operation, with the goal of long-term employment opportunities.” The goal of H.D.S. is to encourage economic self-sufficiency by providing employment opportunities for tribal members. Here’s how the program works: Community members apply for the program, and a “class” begins the program, which lasts one to two years. Community members spend their time in the program working all aspects of the resort, from washing dishes to doing income control audits. They spend about a week in each position to give each H.D.S. associate a chance to find their best fit. They receive compensation throughout the program. Should they choose, they are guaranteed employment at the successful conclusion of the program.
To date, there have been more than 60 participants since the program began in 1997. “Employment opportunities for tribal members are key to achieving financial independence,” said Chairman Miguel. “Participation in the H.D.S. program provides them tremendous opportunities to learn the gaming and hospitality business.” The Ak-Chin Indian Community had deep roots in farming and agriculture. Protecting and sustaining the land, air, and water is part of the fabric of the Community. Harrah’s takes that pledge seriously as well and regularly supports the company’s Code Green Program. Code Green’s sustainability programs are focused on reducing the property’s carbon footprint, energy and water consumption, and recycling. They also support civic programs vital to the Maricopa community’s success, including organizations involved with education, children and families, adults, the environment, health care, and the arts. “We’re proud that we’ve established a reputation for giving back to the community,” says Kintner. “I believe, and hope others agree, that our partnership with the Ak-Chin Indian Community is a proven model for how casinos can ultimately be a catalyst for positive change in a community.” $

Two Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino Employees Receive Patriot Award
Above: Terri Tooley (Left) and Michael Schauster (Right) received the Patriot Award for their support of David Porter (Center), an employee in the United States Armed Forces Guard and Reserve. The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program, recognized two employees At Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino for their high-level support of fellow employee David Porter, who is serving as Staff Sergeant CBRN Operations NCO 158th Headquarters Support Company in the United States Armed Forces Guard and Reserve. The Patriot Award, presented to Michael Schauster and Terri Tooley, reflects the efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployments, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. “Michael and Terri took the time to learn about the specific military service needs of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Security Officer David Porter,” said Arizona Committee for ESGR State Chair Dan Irving. “Individuals enlisted in the military make huge sacrifices to serve and to know that they have unconditional support at work is appreciated. The Patriot Award is an acknowledgement of the support to Staff Sergeant Porter’s service.” Celebrating more than 25 years in Maricopa, Arizona, Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino is Arizona’s first and only tribal casino to have an international management partner. Harrah’s AkChin is the only casino in Arizona that allows guests, through its Caesars Rewards program, to unlock benefits that can be used at the entire Caesars’ family of casinos. $

NEGATIVE & POSITIVE ENERGY Several Sure-Fire Solutions Seeing You Through Casino Chaos
D
ear Sami, I really enjoy reading your column every month. You always hit the nail right on the head and you don’t beat around the bush. Last month’s article [What? I Can’t Hear You?] was right on. Some casinos have gotten to be so loud that it’s unbearable! I love what you said at the end of the article!! I’m going to take your advice which, by the way, will not be the first time! I’ve already picked [another casino] to play at and I’m more relaxed, having more fun and winning more. [This casino] is way quieter, everyone seems nicer and happier (customers and employees) and the vibe just feels right. I don’t know how to explain it. Is it possible that some casinos actually have a negative energy and some have a more positive energy? What do you think? Mary Jameson—Via Letter, Phoenix, Arizona Mary, thank you for taking the time to write me. I really appreciate your kind remarks about my column. I’m very grateful to have you as a fan. Signs Of Negative Energy Several people have written me since the March issue came out expressing your exact sentiments. Some casinos have really increased the volume of the music and the slot machines to intolerable levels. That noise, coupled with the franticness that some players exhibit (such as smacking the buttons, etc.), can really put someone on edge. I’ll restate my opinion for those that may not have had a chance to read my article last month, “If a loud environment is getting in the way of your positive attitude, which I believe is the key to a winning experience, then it’s time to find a quieter place to play.” To answer your question … YES! I, absolutely, believe that a casino can have negative or positive energy. So, it’s very important for all of us to be in tune with how we feel at a casino. If the environment makes us feel uncomfortable or on edge, it’s very unlikely that we will have a positive experience during that play session. Bad vibes = bad luck! The converse is also true. I learned this many years ago when I was playing at a casino and winning and winning and winning. Suddenly, I realized that everyone around me was winning, smiling, laughing, having fun and did I mention winning? The slot attendants could barely keep up with all the taxable hand pays that were occurring. Ever since then, I have been keenly aware of my surroundings and the energy that envelops me along with how I feel, in general.
We don’t need fancy technological equipment and we don’t need to be psychics or holistic medicine practitioners to know whether or not the energy fields around us are positive or negative! We just need to be in tune with our common sense and our emotions. It’s called awareness and we all have the ability to be perceptive when we want to! It’s also called gut instincts which we can all tune in to as well. There are three sources that can produce negative energy around us. It can come from negative people, from our surroundings, or from our own psyche! Negative People Let’s start with the negative energy that comes from other people in a casino. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the person who is sitting next to you at a slot machine pounding away on the buttons and smacking the screen is not in a good place. So, question … negative energy or positive energy? Hmm. If you don’t know the answer to that one right away, then I’ll give you some more signs to watch for that could indicate a negative aura may surround you. Do they look grouchy or upset? Check. Are they cussing, complaining, whining? Check. Are they exhibiting signs of anxiety like shaking their legs incessantly and fidgeting as if they have to go to the bathroom? Check. Okay, they may actually have to go to the bathroom so reevaluate if (Continued on page 34)

they leave their machine and come back. We humans are incredibly emotional beings. All of us, at one time or another, have had the experience of feeling either positive or negative energy from another person. That’s because humans are able to pick up on anger, sadness, hurt and other emotions that people project. Human beings can sense the emotions of others through both verbal and non-verbal cues even when they aren’t openly expressed. So, if we suddenly feel “off” while we’re playing at a casino, we could be feeling the emotions of people next to us or around us even if they aren’t obviously exhibiting signs of anxiety or distress. A negative attitude is contagious and spreads like spilled water! The easiest way to deal with negative people at the casino is to just ask them to get away from you and go play somewhere else. Okay, not out loud! Sometimes I have just willed negative people to leave and it’s worked. Really! If you’re not open to finding another place to play and they’re not showing any signs of leaving, you can find ways to maintain positive energy in their presence. One is to just imagine an aura of positivity surrounding you like a shield. Negative Environment The easiest way to know if you are in a negative or toxic environment is to determine how you feel when you are there. Environments that make you uncomfortable most likely have negative energy. Environments that give you a sense of calm and peace usually have positive energy. The question is, how can we determine whether the casino we frequent has positive or negative energy? Because, let’s be realistic, a casino isn’t supposed to be like a Zen garden. A casino is designed to be the exact opposite of everything that is considered to be tranquil and serene! A positive energy environment is bright and should have lots of windows to let the sunlight in. Casinos are usually dark. Very dark. And, unless you’re sitting right next to an exit, you won’t see any doors or windows in sight. Additionally, casinos can be quite loud and excessive noise levels are extremely detrimental to a person’s mental and physical state. A sound’s loudness is measured in decibels (dB) with normal conversation being at about 60 dB and a loud rock concert at about 120 dB. In general, sounds above 85 dB are harmful and with continued exposure can cause hearing loss and nerve damage. If a casino plays excessively loud music and has their slot machines on the loudest settings, the average decibel levels can reach or exceed 100 dB! No casino will ever provide a peaceful, spa-like environment but there are ways we, as players, can introduce more positive energy around us amidst the crazy 24-hour, high-energy atmos-
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2021 | azgamingguide.com
phere of a casino. Find a place to play that’s closer to an exit where there’s more light. Not only is the natural light a positive source of energy, but being close to the door also allows the bad energy to leave and fresh, new positive energy to enter. In addition to light, plants give off positive energy and vibrations as well. Now, I don’t know about you but I don’t remember seeing any greenery in the casinos next to the games I enjoy playing. However, if your favorite casino has any windows, sit close to them because even looking out the window and seeing plants and palm trees can provide the same soothing, positive feeling. And, can’t escape the noise of the loud or bad music piped through the sound system? Just wear ear plugs or listen to your own tunes. Negative Psyche Sometimes the negative energy doesn’t come from other people or from the environment, but from negative self-talk; the unspoken thoughts that run through your head that can harm your health and your well-being. It’s important to always stay positive, especially when visiting a casino. There will always be highs and lows during every play session at the casino, but you should never let the lows affect your mood. Nobody can deny that a losing streak can be extremely frustrating. However, letting frustration turn into anger or desperation is when a bad situation becomes even worse very quickly. Here are a few hints on how to shake off some of that negative energy and change your luck around: LOSE THE ATTITUDE. Whining and grumbling about losing isn’t going to do anything for you except keep you in a negative frame of mind. If you find yourself huffing and puffing, protesting and criticizing – stop! SHAKE IT OFF. Sometimes getting up, walking around and then refocusing is all it takes to get into a more positive mindset. Use the restroom. Get a drink or a snack. Step outside for some fresh air. Tell the person next to you a joke! Laughter is one of the best ways to produce positive energy. TRY A NEW GAME. The quickest way to lift your spirits after a bad run is to get your mind off of it. Trying a new casino game you’ve never played before will do just that. Focus on learning the new game and, who knows, beginner’s luck may just follow! GET A LUCKY CHARM. Okay, there is no proof that lucky charms can bring you luck at the casino. However, I will tell you that feeling lucky makes people feel happy. And, I know that the people who feel happy are usually the ones who are having the most fun and enjoying themselves at the casino! $

A woman had a wedding to attend and needed a wedding gift. “Aha,” she thought, “I have that monogrammed silver tray from my wedding that I never use. I’ll just take it to a silversmith and have him remove my monogram and replace it with hers. Voila, one cheap wedding present!” So, she took it to the silversmith and gave him the instructions. After examining the tray carefully, the silversmith shook his head and said, “Lady, this can only be done so many times!” Anonymous Quotes: A husband who thinks he’s smarter than his wife is married to a very smart woman.
