WORK / LIFE BALANCE Important Now More Than Ever

S
ometimes I feel like I can’t anymore. I know I’m not alone, but this past year and a half has knocked the wind out of me. And, based on my observations, a lot of people feel the same way I do. I’m not going to state the obvious; we are all aware of what happened in the middle of March 2020. I know the only way back to “normal” for me is to plan for a break. And yes, I have to plan to do this. I have to focus on the break and see it as a goal. As a lifelong workaholic (I began at age 9), I have always had difficulty setting aside time to recharge my batteries, getting a good night’s rest, and not feeling guilty that I’m not letting myself, someone else, or my work down. Casinos are my break. I enjoy going to casinos. I like the entertainment, the fine dining, the energy, (most of) the employees, (most) of the other patrons, the risk, the reward, and yes, some may find this difficult to believe, I can handle a loss. I go to the casino to distance myself from my work and other demands in my life. I practice a certain mindset when I’m going to the casino. As you know, in having read my letters every month, that my mindset on the way to the casino is one of being relaxed, positive, ready to have fun, and ready to win. However, I don’t let the casino get me down or introduce new challenges into my life. I guess I’m telling you to find your break, the way I have to tell myself to find my break. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK
SHOULD I DO WHAT “THEY” ARE DOING? A Common Question Based On Personal Observations
M
y dear experts, I’ve been reading your magazine every month for years and I pick it up at [a variety of Arizona casinos] ready to receive some new advice. I’ve never written in but I just had to because I saw [a fellow casino patron] doing something different at [a favorite casino of mine] and I wondered what you think. I don’t remember an article about this in any of your past issues. Is what [the patron] is doing a good idea or not? [The patron] was playing a video poker game, Jacks or Better, I think, and it wasn’t a good pay table, maybe 6/5, and was switching back and forth between denominations. First it was a five credit bet at $1 ($5 total), then after one hand a five credit bet at $0.50 ($2.50 total), then a five credit bet at $1, then back to $0.50, then $1, then $0.50, and so on. Sometimes [the patron] would play two hands at the same denomination, and at first I thought it was after a win, but then I realized that wasn’t always the case. Is [the patron] on to something or not? Over the years, I have frequently asked myself this question if I happen to come across someone who plays differently than I do. I’m stuck wondering if I’m doing damage to my bankroll or not by adopting someone else’s strategy? Please clear this one up for me. Jamie Rogers—Scottsdale, AZ Hi Jamie! Thanks for writing in. Look, we’ll be blunt here. This “strategy” you describe is ludicrous. Flat out. To each their own, but our opinion is this approach to gambling will drive anybody up the wall, regardless of the game you play. Be it slots, table games, video poker, keno, etc. talk about frustrating! The behavior itself appears to be completely unfocused as well. If you are having a difficult time determining if the patron is switching denomination (and therefore their bet) with every hand or if it is dependent on a win then we believe we can call this an approach that is clearly confusing to the person adopting the “strategy” you outline. First, as you mentioned in your letter, the game being played is 6/5 Jacks or Better video poker. Right away we know the house hold is about 5% (among the worst video poker house holds), if you play with optimal strategy, and even higher if you don’t, or
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2021 | azgamingguide.com
can’t. Switching denominations every hand only changes your average wager over time. This person is actually playing the game at a bet of $3.75 ($5 + $2.50 = $7.50. $7.50/2 = $3.75) over the long run! Why not just stick with one denomination? Players should either feel comfortable with the amount of their bet or not. Why switch bets? Why distract yourself with switching in and out of the game’s menu playing video poker where you have to concentrate on the cards dealt and what to hold? Second, how are you going to feel if you hit a significant hand at the lower denomination? Putting yourself in that situation, anyone, gambler or not, will feel the sting of having “lost out” on the higher win at the higher bet. Guaranteed. Finally, we advocate independence, especially when gambling. Don’t copy other people. You can never get completely inside their heads anyway. As you mentioned, you’re not even sure exactly what the strategy is you observed. Be yourself. We believe, along with being informed, the best way to help you toward more winning sessions, and an experience at casinos which is more entertaining, is for you to do your own thing. $

t’s all about the bubbles with IGT’s Bubble Blast Link video slots. Bubble Blast Link is an extension to IGT’s multi-level progressive (MLP) product line and combines one of IGT’s greatest waterfall mechanics with exciting opportunities to win prizes. With each spin, credit prizes or mini or maxi bonus bubbles move up the screen. If a bubble lands on a “catcher,” a player instantly wins that prize with repeat win options as it moves through the screen. A higher bet increases the chance of seeing the bonus while the credit prizes increase proportionally. Three or more coins trigger the MLP playoff feature, in which the player chooses bubbles to reveal credits, a mini or maxi bonus, or a coin. If the coin is revealed, the feature ends, but will spin to give the player one more chance to win a credit prize, mini or maxi bonus, or the major or grand jackpot. Two Bubble Blast titles are available—Trials of Atlantis and Spells ‘n Whistles—each with attractive themes that stand out with bright, colorful, and entertaining graphics and bonuses, special features, and game combinations. VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann
REVEALING NUMBERS Using The Odds To Help You Win
C
onsider your typical full pay Jacks or Better video poker game at max bet. Do you know how often the winning hands should show up? Knowing the answer to this question is a major component to becoming a good video poker player. One important benefit you gain by having this knowledge and keeping records of your sessions during and after your casino visits is the ability to analyze the short term performance of the video poker machine you chose to play. On average, a full pay Jacks or Better video poker machine, when played with optimal strategy at max bet, should produce a winner once every 2.20 hands. This translates into approximately 45 winning hands out of every 100 hands. That’s a pretty easy value to keep track of while you are playing, right? Count the winning hands for every group of 100 hands. For those of you who like a bit more of a challenge, track several of the other wins across those 100 hands as well!
Count the wins for every 100 hands. You should have 45 winners! In those 100 spins, you should see an approximate average of one Straight, Flush and Full House. Seven Three-of-a-Kinds should have happened, along with about 13 Two-Pairs, and around 21 pairs of Jacks or Better. Or, if you opt for a simpler, less intensive tracking system during each session, then try to just track Four-of-a-Kinds, Straight Flushes, and Royal Flushes across many playing sessions. By the time you reach a total of 100,000 hands played on a full pay Jacks or Better game with optimal strategy, you should have won around 236 Four-of-aKinds, 11 Straight Flushes, and 2 to 3 Royal Flushes! Match those average numbers up against your experience and hopefully you are not coming up short! Regardless of the Jacks or Better pay schedule you play, the numbers mentioned do not change all that much because your strategy essentially remains the same. Have fun chasing Four-of-a-kinds and Royals. We always do! $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe
ARIZONA’S NEW LIVE CRAPS GUIDE A Quick Overview Of The Basics To Get You Started
L
ive craps is here to stay in Arizona. Don’t be intimidated; it’s more fun than the electronic version. Just be prepared to have arms, dice, and a stick waving around you at the
table!
The dealers can explain the game and specific bets to you, but you’ll have to wait until a “hand” is over and the dice are going to a new shooter to get good instruction. To get chips, ask for change and drop your cash close to you on the layout – not inside the lined-off gaming area. They’ll take care of the rest. How A Dice Game Starts A new shooter starts the game by making a wager on the Pass or Don’t Pass line. The two bets are opposites, and most people play the Pass. So, put your bet between the lines where it says Pass Line, and get ready to shoot the dice, or bet with another shooter at the table. Then you root for a 7 or 11 to total on the come-out roll to win. If 2, 3, or 12 rolls (craps), the Pass line wagers lose. Any Don’t Pass bets win on 2 and 3; they push on 12. Winning Pass and Don’t Pass wagers pay even money. If another number rolls (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10), it becomes the “point,” and the inside dealers will place a round puck inside the rectangular box with the corresponding number. If the puck is in the middle of the table, it’s a come-out roll – no point has been established! The Free Bet At Craps Once there is a point, you can take odds on the point hitting by placing an amount (usually double) behind your Pass wager and outside the lines toward you. If you win, you’ll get the exact odds of the point rolling before 7 rolls (more than even money). The house has no edge on this odds wager! And yes, you lose it all if 7 rolls before your point. If you are betting the Don’t Pass against the point hitting, you are rooting for 7 to roll first, and your odds wager costs more and pays less, but the house still has no edge. Now it may be a single roll or dozens of rolls before a shooter fails to make a point, sevens-out, and the dice go to the next
16 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2021 | azgamingguide.com
player to start a new hand. That’s the beauty of craps – you can hold the dice and shoot as long as you keep making your point. And, you can bet the Come area after a point is established and have your own points with odds if you wish. Place Bets You can also bet on the individual numbers of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 with a Place bet. Every time they roll, you win. The catch is that you lose if 7 rolls – except on the come-out roll. You can take any wager down except a Pass line bet after a number is established. Bets in the Field win or lose on the next roll. The Field pays even money; double on snake eyes (2); and triple on boxcars (12). Horn bets and C&E (craps and eleven) are fun, single-roll bets, but the odds are heavy with the house. $

PROBABILY & GAMBLING A Basic Example Explains The Math Of Blackjack & Card Counting
P
robability is the mathematics behind all gambling. Basically, you take the number of possible outcomes, and divide that by favorable outcomes, to get the odds of an event happening. For example, if you take a coin and flip it there are two possible outcomes, a heads or tails. The odds of throwing heads is 1 in 2. If you roll a die there are six possible results. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Want to know the odds of rolling a six? Expressed in an odds format, there is only one way to get a six, so the odds are 1 in 6. Let’s say you want to create a gambling game that you and a friend can play. You roll a die and your friend tries to guess what number is going to come up. If he guesses correctly you give him $6, if he is wrong, he gives you $1. Since the odds of the game are 6 to 1 of your friend winning, and the payoff is also 6 to 1, you are playing a game with true odds. In the long run you both will break even. However, in the short run anything can happen. Now, let’s change the payout. If you pay him $4 when he guesses correctly, and he pays you $1 for each incorrect guess, you would have an advantage and expect to make a profit. In the long run he would win $4 every 6 rolls, but he would lose $5 every 6 rolls. That’s a loss of $1 every 6 rolls! In the short run he could end up winning, but over many rolls he would eventually be a loser. This is the math that all casino games are based on. Even though you may win if you don’t play very long, eventually, if you keep playing, you will lose. Moving on to my favorite game in the casino, let’s take a look at the odds involved with single deck Blackjack. I’d like to explain how to calculate the odds of getting a Blackjack. A Blackjack is an Ace and a card with the value of 10 which is dealt on the first two cards in any order. The probability of getting an Ace as the first card is 4/52. This is because there are 4 Aces and 52 cards in a single deck of cards. The probability of getting a card with a value of 10, after the Ace, is 16/51. So, the probability of getting an Ace followed by a 10 is (4/52) x (16/51) = (1/13) x (16/51) = (16/663). But, we also
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2021 | azgamingguide.com
have to consider the fact we can get a card whose value is 10 first (16/52) followed by an Ace (4/51). That probability is also 16/663. So the probability of either event happening, resulting in Blackjack, is the sum of the two (16/663 + 16/663 = 32/663 = 4.83%) which converts into odds of about 1 in 20. Now we’ll put the math into practice by using a real world example. Suppose you are playing a single deck game and in four hands you have seen 24 cards and no Aces or 10 value cards have been dealt. What are your odds of getting a Blackjack? Since there are only 28 cards left in the deck, the odds of getting an Ace is now 4/28 or 1/7. The odds of getting a 10 value card is now 16/27. Your chance of getting an Ace followed by a 10 are 1/7 x 16/27, or 16/189, or about 8.47%. Just like our first example, the order of the cards doesn’t matter for us getting a Blackjack. So 10, then Ace is calculated by 16/28 x 4/27 = 16/189. Combined, that’s 32/189 = 16.93%, or odds of about 1 in 6. Having this information, you should increase your bet on the next hand because you are now more likely to get a Blackjack. This is how card counting works; letting you know when to bet more. If you would like to be the one that has the winning edge over the casino, my new book, How To Become A Blackjack Jedi by TJ Jorgensen, is available on Amazon in both hard copy and eBook format. I teach how to overcome the house advantage. After all, it’s much more fun to win than it is to lose. Who knows, you might even improve your overall Blackjack playing skills too! $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. COVER STORY
Our readers are telling us they “can’t win the way they used to” on the slots. They are informing us the slots just “feel different.” We are hearing from our fans “the slots are tighter” since the casinos reopened after the stay-at-home orders were lifted. There are two reasons why this is happening. First, and no one likes to hear this, it’s you, your attitude and mindset (along with everyone else). Second, the slots ARE different. And we can PROVE IT!
20 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2021 | azgamingguide.com
You, Your Attitude & Mindset
The Slots ARE Different
As a child (and now as an adult), I never liked hearing how I have to take a good look at myself. I was told to examine how my thoughts influence my experience. I was told to relax, chill, take it easy, get over it. Until I began to understand the difference between willful resistance (bad) and willing acceptance (good), I experienced inner turmoil in many situations.
Having designed slot machines, created the math behind the slots, and been “behind the curtain” in the casino industry for so many years, I have a very unique perspective and experience that perhaps only a handful of people in the industry have.
Gambling post-pandemic is no different than the struggles I’ve gone through in the past and continue to encounter and then persevere in the present. You have to accept your state of mind. You have to examine your behavior, your words, and especially your thoughts. I know this sounds a little out there to many of you, but trust me, this is the way forward. Let’s imagine your friend is thinking to themselves while on the way to the casino, “the slots are so tight now, I don’t win, I can’t win, nobody wins, the casinos set all the slots to higher hold percentages now (post-pandemic), I don’t see any winners, I don’t hit bonuses, I can’t get a jackpot,” and so on. Honestly, what do you think your friend’s experience will be like? Do I really have to answer that question? How about this: As you may be aware, the Phoenix Suns are in the NBA Finals as this issue goes to press. What do you think the outcome of their playoff series will be against the Milwaukee Bucks if the entire team, including the coaching and support staff, and the fans are thinking, “I can’t make a free throw, I can’t shoot a three pointer to save my life, I don’t think my knees will last, the Bucks are just too good, we can’t figure out how to break down their defense, their offense is just too good, they run faster than us, they shoot better than us, we are going to lose,” and so on? Hmm, the Suns will lose, perhaps? Why bother showing up to play? With that attitude, just forfeit! Well, your thoughts about the slots and the casino will translate into results. Trust me. A positive attitude goes a long way to a better experience. While it may not guarantee a win, those positive thoughts will get you closer. A negative attitude, in my opinion, will not generate a positive result, it just gets you more negative results.
I brought up this topic in a previous issue about how the slots are different. Modern technology comes in to the casino industry a little slower than in the consumer electronics area because of the high level of regulation in the industry that creates delays in getting new technology onto the casino floor. With the technology available to slot machines on the floor at this time, new things are possible that weren't just a few years ago. And, the clues are hidden in the help screens. We always tell you to read the help screens, right? Curious? You should be! What follows are direct quotes from the help screens of several newer slot machines. “Reels are determined at the start of each game and depend on if [a certain bet] is played.” “At the start of each spin, 1 of 5 sets of 5 reels is randomly selected to be used in the game. The chances of each reel set being selected is not equal.” “Different reels may be used in any one bought game. The reels used are randomly determined. Different reels contain the same number of symbols as normal reels. It is imperceptible to the player when different reels are used.” “Changing your play option changes the reels and chances of [bonus] wins.” “The game consists of 2 sets of 5 reels. During each spin 1 of the 2 sets of reels will be randomly selected to be used for that spin. One set of reels contains stacks of [the bonus symbol]. The other set of reels contains stacks of symbols that transform into one of the following symbols: [all the base game symbols EXCLUDING the bonus symbol].”
To make matters worse, you are surrounded by other people who are struggling with the same negative thoughts while you are playing your favorite game at the casino! The only way to counteract all of this negativity is for you to play with a winning attitude and find your own space (possibly during a slow day or slow time) where you feel good at the casino you visit.
Seriously? The reels are not the same from spin to spin or between wagers? Why do you think your experience “feels different” on the slots you play? Here’s the proof! We all understand most free games are using different reels, but now the different reels are happening all the time, and they are changing between spins! Say “goodbye!” to having intuition or a “vibe” the machine is hot and about to hit a bonus!
You may not like what I have to say, but you’ll have to really examine what your attitude, and the attitude of those around you, is doing to your casino trips!
And, as newer technology makes its way onto the casino floor, be prepared for more changes to the slots available to you. Make sure to stay informed … read the help screens! $

Seif graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Scottsdale, Arizona with an Associate’s Degree in Hospitality and Culinary Arts. He gained a lot of his experience working alongside his now friend in Fountain Hills at his long-time established restaurant, Phil’s Filling Station, first as a consultant, then as his chef while helping him open two other restaurants; Eagle’s Nest Bistro and Wine Bar, and Fireside Grill. Eric says travelling has influenced his culinary skills in a substantial way. He derives his passion from his travels to Europe and cooking experiences from a vast number of cuisines, which have allowed him to create clean, balanced and layered flavors that complement one another without overpowering each other. As the Chef de Cuisine at Storytellers located at Cliff Castle Casino Hotel, Seif oversees operations in the fine dining restaurant. “I love to combine ingredients from many different cultures, both locally and around the world, and share them with my guests. My guests are the sole reason I do what I do. I love blending new flavors and introducing them to people. Their satisfaction is what it is all about for me,” said Chef, Eric Seif. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino November 5
Friday, September 24, 2021, Mazatzal welcomes country music icon, Jerrod Niemann, unplugged!
Justin Moore, a country music chart topper, is set to take the stage at The Events Center at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on Friday, November 5, 2021.
Jerrod has always been one-of-a-kind. Since the day his charttopping major-label debut, Lover, Lover, announced him as a truly original voice, Jerrod Niemann has been that guy—a little edgier, a little cooler, maybe just a bit off-center in the best possible way. Ten years in, he is making some of the most compelling music of his career. As the world hits reset for a moment, Jerrod has done the same. Always willing to stretch country’s modern and elastic boundaries, he hit the ground running as an artist with a sound that stood out and a compelling visual presence. It did not hurt that he could count on the support of and synergy with friends like Randy Houser and Jamey Johnson, who both made cameos in the video for his #1 country airplay hit Lover, Lover. There followed a string of hits including What Do You Want, One More Drinkin’ Song, the #1 chart-topping Drink to That All Night, and A Little More Love with his friend and sometimes touring partner Lee Brice. Tickets are $30 advance and $40 if purchased after September 20, 2021. The event is open to guests 21+. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available on-line at mazatzalcasino.com or at the cashier cage. Jerrod Niemann, only at Mazatzal Hotel & Casino! $

The acclaimed country singer has an ACM award win as well as multiple nominations from the ACM, ACC and ACA awards. Moore has previously shared the stage with country legends like Hank Williams Jr., Brad Paisley and Miranda Lambert. Apart from Moore’s music stylings, the singer recently started the Justin Moore podcast with his tour manager JR. Notable guests on the podcast include Matthew McConaughey, Jon Pardi and Tracy Lawrence. All Ages Show Doors: 7 p.m. Show Time: 8 p.m. Tickets: $79.50; $59.50; $39.50 $

SHOULD THE SMOKING BAN REMAIN? Non-Smokers & Smokers Hope The Casinos Remain Smoke-Free
T
his is a letter I recently received in my inbox from a loyal fan. As she took the time to write me about this important subject, and, like many who have written, is very passionate about the topic, I thought it is an important message to share with everyone.
husband always used to come home smelling like ashtrays. It was in our clothes, in our hair and sometimes even after a shower I felt like I could still smell the smoke! What used to make matters worse is that some, NOT ALL, smokers are inconsiderate. They will blow smoke in your face and even ash on you! I’ve seen really awful behavior from some smokers. They don’t even use an ashtray! The ash is all over the slot machines, in between the games, on the chairs and all over the floor! One time I even had someone just throw their cigarette butt into my drink! Let me say it again – I know that not all smokers are rude, just some. But, when smoking is allowed in a casino it makes the place look, smell and feel so trashy! Second hand smoke is not healthy. And, obviously, the casinos are not hurting with their business being non-smoking now. In fact, I feel like the casinos are busier than ever! Some casinos have small smoking sections, indoors and outdoors, so why not stay that way? I have a friend who smokes that goes with me to the casino and even she says she hopes it stays smoke-free! So, please help us get the word out to everyone you know at the casinos. All of us non-smokers (and even some smokers!) are finally happy that we can BREATHE in the casinos. Please keep the fresh, clean air! Please keep the cleanliness! Please keep your patrons and employees in a non-toxic environment! Please don’t go back to a smoke-filled casino! Linda Janowski – Phoenix, AZ
Dear Sami, I can’t tell you how happy me and all my friends are that the casinos here in Arizona are finally smoke-free. I realize they decided to go non-smoking because of the pandemic, but I pray that they remain that way! Please tell everyone you know who is in a position to make the decision to stay smoke-free to please, please, please not go back to the way that it was. If the managers and CEOs of the casinos spent as much time on the floor as we gamblers do, they too would realize how awful it is when you allow smoking inside a building. Me and my
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2021 | azgamingguide.com
I do want to let our readers know the best way to voice your feelings about a smoke-free environment is to continue to communicate your opinion directly to casino staff. While the Smoke Free Arizona Act (effective May 1, 2007) bans smoking in most enclosed public places and places of employment, plus bans smoking within 20 feet of all entrances/exits, open windows and ventilation systems, casinos and all other businesses located on Tribal land are exempt from this law as each Tribe is a Sovereign Nation. Again, make your voice heard and speak with casino personnel if you’d like to continue to enjoy a smoke-free atmosphere in Arizona’s casinos. Thanks for writing in and good luck! $

Social tact is making someone feel at home, even though you wish they were. Unknown When it comes to work there are many people who will stop at nothing. Unknown If you could kick the person who causes almost all of your problems, you wouldn’t be able to sit down for a month. Unknown A man went to the Audiologist to buy a hearing aid. “How much does a hearing aid cost?” he asked the clerk. “That depends,” said the clerk. “Our hearing aids are priced from $5 to $5,000.” The man said, “let’s see the $5 model.” The clerk handed him the device. “You just stick this button in your ear and run this cord into your pocket.” “How does it work?” the customer asked. “It doesn’t work,” the clerk replied. “But when people see it, they talk louder!”
