emember when I wrote about missing the buffet at the casino? Just look back at the June 2021 issue’s Editor’s Note. Well, as the saying goes, “Ask, and you shall receive!” I asked, and Casino Del Sol in Tucson recently opened their Festa International Buffet! I wrote about really enjoying being able to make my own salad and then get a simple protein to go along with it and the Festa International Buffet does not disappoint in meeting my needs. But my palate and angle of attack at a casino buffet may be different than other patrons! Casino Del Sol’s buffet includes tempting delicacies reflecting a variety of internationally-inspired dining options that are created right before the eyes. Live-action cooking stations set against a bright and airy ambiance make Festa International Buffet a delight for all the senses. Guests can also try Asian wok stir-fry and sushi, great pasta dishes and pizza, or hand-carved roasts and hearty main dishes. There’s a flavorful salad station brimming with fresh local fare. Plus scrumptious dessert selections include their traditional bananas foster, fresh pastries and more. Everyone will have plenty to choose from. I’m planning a trip to Tucson soon and you know where I’ll go for lunch while I’m there. Casino Del Sol’s Festa International Buffet. Bon Appetit! Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK

HUGE CROWD—WHAT HAPPENED? All Is Not What It Seems When It Comes To “Big Wins” On The Slots

I

was just at [a casino] and I came across something weird. A player won $1,425, just over the taxable amount of $1,200, on a Buffalo slot right next to me. First, two slot attendants showed up. I’m not sure what was said, but a few minutes later two employees in suits showed up. Then, the security came and finally a technician who worked for the casino started to open up the game and made the slot replay the bonus leading up to the big win. I couldn’t believe it! All the time, more and more people started to crowd around the game as more and more of the employees showed up. I could hear people talking about the big win, claiming it was tens of thousands of dollars (it wasn’t—it was ”only” $1,425), claiming someone had cheated, claiming the game broke, claiming the casino was setting the game to not pay now that it had, and on and on. Some of it was really crazy to listen to, because it wasn't even true! The player was eventually paid the $1,425 they won and the game was closed and locked back up and the next person was able to play it if they wanted. I just want to know if you can shed some light as to why the casino opened up the game and made it replay the bonus? I didn’t know they could make a slot do that! Christy Woodford—Phoenix, AZ Hi Christy, thank you for writing in. Wow, what a story! Based on your description, the player, or possibly the slot attendants while interacting with the player, raised a concern as to how much was won during that bonus. Essentially, this is called a “patron dispute.” Once this process is started, the Tribe has what’s called a Tribal Gaming Office (or Tribal Gaming Agency) which then gets involved. The employees in suits were probably from the TGO. Then security shows up for crowd control and as an extra pair of eyes once the slot is opened. There is, after all, money in the slot’s cash box! A slot technician is needed to access certain features made available to the casino by the manufacturer of the slot machine. Most features are required by Arizona’s gaming regulations. These regulations are standard from one jurisdiction to the next. What you witnessed was casino employees accessing what is commonly referred to as “Last Game Recall.” This feature (it’s actually a regulated requirement) requires a slot to be able to

06 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2021 | azgamingguide.com

display what happened during a previous play (or spin). The exact wording of the regulation is as follows: Information on at least the last ten (10) games played on the gaming device shall be retrievable using an external key-switch or other secure method that is not available to the player. Game recall shall consist of graphical, textual, or video content, or some combination of these options, so long as the full and accurate reconstruction of game outcome is possible. Game recall shall display the following information: a) Date and time stamp; b) The denomination played ... c) The display associated with the final outcome of the game... d) The credit meter value at the start of play and/or at the end of play; ... g) Total amount wagered; h) Total amount won; i) Total amount collected after the end of a game... j) The results of any player choices involved in the game outcome; ... The ten (10) game recall shall reflect at least the last 50 events of completed bonus games. If a bonus game consists of 'x number of events,’ each with separate outcomes, each of the ‘x events,’ up to 50, shall be displayed with its corresponding outcome, regardless of whether the result was a win or loss. These rules exist to protect the company responsible for making the slot, the casino, and the player in the event there is a disagreement about what happened on a previous spin. Most likely, that is exactly what happened. There was some confusion and everyone decided it would be best to clear up any concerns by doublechecking with Last Game Recall. Then, the correct amount was paid and everyone moved on. And, yes, Last Game Recall is tested by the company, an independent lab, and the Arizona Department of Gaming to make sure it works. There actually are employees at all three places whose sole job is to try and “break” the slot before it gets onto the floor of a casino! Unfortunately, the crowd that gathered began to spread misinformation based purely on speculation. It’s unfair to the casino and other players when scenarios are invented. This should give insight into what you witnessed and any future events! $

Cashman Bingo By Aristocrat Now At Talking Stick Resort In Scottsdale

W

hat if there was a way to combine the fun of slots with the chase of bingo? And what if the host of that combination were every player’s favorite slot host, Mr. Cashman? If you did all that, you would have the fun and excitement of Aristocrat Gaming’s new Cashman Bingo. Cashman Bingo is a new one-of-a-kind family of games launched with the titles Cashman Bingo Hong Kong Jackpots and Cashman Bingo Babylon Jackpots. This game introduces a persistent cash on reels mechanic and unique bingo card matrix. This true persistence mechanic copies symbols from the reel matrix to the bingo card each time a cash value is landed on the reel set, accumulating, and persisting until one or more bingo lines are hit. Cashman Bingo has three entertaining features: “Bingo,” where landed cash symbols get copied to the bingo board. Cash value symbols on bingo board accumulate and persist until one or more bingo lines are hit. “Cashman Antics,” where a randomly appearing Mr. Cashman character increases prize values and awards bingo prizes. “Wheel,” where players are awarded credits or a mini, minor, maxi, major, or grand jackpot. Cleopatra II By IGT

B

e sure to join Cleopatra on a journey for gold, wealth, and riches with IGT’s Cleopatra II video slots. A spinoff of the classic theme, this updated game explores the pyramids and ancient tombs of “Cleo’s” forefathers with each new spin.

Three or more “Bonus” symbols start the bonus play, and player choice determines the amount of free games. “Wild Cleo” pays double whenever she is a part of the win. Two or more wild symbols on the win line pay. For maximum bonus play action, engage all 20 lines. Initially, players can win up to 20 free spins, while the maximum number of free spins with re-triggers is 50. The bonus is played on different reels, and reels spin in both directions for added visual appeal. Each free spin award is multiplied with a multiplier for that spin. Multiplier numbers coincide with the number of the free spin that is played. For example, if the fourth free spin is played, the multiplier for the win will be four. This is a 20-credit cost to cover game. For more information, visit IGT.com. $

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann

TRIPLE DOUBLE BONUS Take A Ride On A Rollercoaster!

T

o be blunt, I have a love-hate relationship with the Video Poker game Triple Double Bonus Poker. It’s kind of like over-indulging in a scrumptious European style chocolate butter cream cake or going on that rollercoaster ride with your kids a second time (even though your stomach is still in your throat from the first time around). Triple Double Bonus Poker is a brutal, but extremely rewarding Video Poker game. With a bet of five credits, a winning combination of four Aces with a kicker (any single 2, 3, or 4) pays 4,000 credits. This is equivalent to $1,000 playing a quarter denomination machine—the exact same win as the Royal Flush. You can expect this substantial win to happen quite frequently; on average about once in every 14,000 hands! And, not only do the Aces pay much more than usual, but the four 2s, 3s, or 4s with a kicker also pay a much higher bonused win of 2,000 credits than other standard Video Poker games. You won’t need to wait that long for this win either, because one of these sweet four-of-a-kind combinations will appear about once in every 5,800 games, on average.

Hold Those Kickers For Big Payouts! At this point I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “Where’s the catch?” Well, there is a catch and boy is it not pretty. To be able to pay higher rewards for winning combinations that happen less often, the pays for the winning combinations that happen very often are significantly reduced. In this game, you are not rewarded twice your bet back with a two-pair as you are with Video Poker games like Bonus Poker and Jacks or Better, but rather just your bet back. Furthermore, the three-of-a-kind wins are reduced to twice your bet back rather than three times your bet like on most other Video Poker games. HINT: Just like with Double Bonus Poker and Double Double Bonus Poker, you always want to sacrifice a full-house that has three Aces for the chance of getting quad Aces. Hold the three Aces and discard the pair if the pair is a 5 through King. If the pair is a kicker (a 2, 3, or 4), then hold a kicker along with the three Aces. You also want to perform this strategy if the cards are three low cards. Do not hold a kicker when dealt only a pair of Aces or a pair of low cards! Good luck and enjoy the ride. $

ARIZONA’S NEW LIVE BACCARAT GUIDE A Quick Overview Of The Basics To Get You Started

B

accarat as an electronic game came to Arizona in 2013, but now the live version is here too. Hailed for being the lowest house-edge table game, Baccarat has been a massive favorite in Las Vegas and Macau for years. Unfortunately, we probably won’t be getting the stylish full-table game played by suave and daring Agent 007 in the 1960s James Bond films. It’s possible, but unlikely. The large tables take a crew of dealers, more space, and larger bets to make them palatable to casinos. Although higher table wager limits have been approved in Arizona, most casinos will roll out a slightly simplified, faster game of Mini-Bac. And, instead of paying a 5% commission on winning Banker wagers, EZ Baccarat has been adapted to allow it to be played with zero commission. Here’s the scoop. How To Play Mini-Bac A Baccarat game is played with six decks of cards held in a standard plastic shoe like Blackjack; card values are slightly different. Deuces through nines are worth their face value while tens and face cards are zero. Aces always count as one. However, if cards drawn make a total over 9, the 10’s digit is dropped. That means when the hand is 5-2, and a ten gets pulled, the point total is still 7. And, if the hand is 5-2 and an 8 gets drawn for 15, the point total becomes 5.

Banker’s Draw Rules If the Player stood with 6 through 9 and the Banker has 0 to 5, they draw one card. If the Player spot draws a card, the Banker follows set rules for drawing. All winning Player wagers pay even money. The Banker has a slight advantage, so winning bets pay even money minus a 5% commission. EZ Baccarat EZ Baccarat was invented to eliminate commission and add side bets. The game plays like standard Min-Bac, but anytime the Banker wins with a three-card total of 7, the Banker bet is a push while the Player and Tie bets lose.

There are only three standard bets at Baccarat: Player, Banker, and Tie. The dealer handles all the cards and all the decisions. Players root for their Banker or Player wager spot to be the closest to 9.

EZ Baccarat also introduces side wagers. The Dragon 7 wager: if the Banker spot wins with a three-card total of 7 the payoff is 40 to 1, and the Panda 8: if the Player spot wins with a three-card total of 8 the payoff is 25 to 1.

Then, the dealer delivers two cards to the Player spot and two to the Banker. If either spot has a natural of 8 or 9, the hand is over. A natural 9 is the best hand and beats a natural 8 or any other hand total. If both spots have a natural 8 or a natural 9, the hand is a tie. In this case, the tie wager wins 8-1.

EZ Baccarat Banker and Player wagers have a house edge of just 1.02 percent. Dragon 7 house edge is 7.65 percent; Panda 8 is 10.2 percent. $

Player Draw Rules If the Player spot has a two-card total of 0 to 5, a third card is drawn. No other cards are drawn for a 6 through 9.

IS YOUR GAME FOR FUN OR PROFIT? Why Putting In The Effort To Sharpen Your Skills Pays Off

A

re you playing Blackjack just for fun, or are you serious about making some money? I think that if you are reading this column that you at least have an interest in playing a better game of Blackjack. First of all, if you have mastered basic strategy, that’s a step in the right direction. For the perfect basic strategy player, the casino has about a 0.57% advantage. So in theory, for every $100 you play, in the long run you will lose 57 cents. However, I can count on one hand the number of players I have seen who play it perfectly. The way I see most play, they give the casino about a 2-10% advantage. If they are also playing side bets too, the casino edge jumps up to around a whopping 26%. So instead of losing 57 cents per $100 dollars, they are dropping $26 dollars or more per $100. Side bets can be fun to hit, but if you play them every hand you will almost always walk out a loser. If you’re just playing for fun and don’t care if you lose, have at it! You will soon be the casino’s favorite customer. As for me, I go to the casino for one reason, to make money. If I didn’t make money month after month, I wouldn’t do it. When I sit down at the Blackjack table, instead of being at a disadvantage it is me that has the edge, about a 1.5% average advantage. This doesn’t mean that I win every time I play because I don’t, but I win most of the time. I keep a log of every time I play, where I play, when I play and how much I win or lose. I show a profit month after month, year after year. I have a friend of mine, (we’ll call him Jason—to protect the guilty), who wants to make money when he goes to the casino. I have worked with him on basic strategy, and he almost has it down. Unfortunately, he just doesn’t want to put in the time to master it completely. We will go to the casino and both sit down at the same Blackjack table. The first thing he does when buying chips is get some singles. Then he makes his bets and always plays the side bets no matter what they are, even though I have shown him the

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | September 2021 | azgamingguide.com

math on what a bad bet they are. For example, he will make a bet of $10, then put $5 on the Push bet and $2 on Lucky Ladies. So, if he wins his $10 bet, and loses the other two he nets $3. He gets bored because he is not making any money. Then he gets frustrated and goes to play slot machines because of the potential for a big hit. When we leave the casino I will usually be ahead $300-$500, while he’s down $600 or more! Don’t be like my friend Jason. If you would like to be the one that has the winning edge over the casino, my new book, How To Become A Blackjack Jedi by TJ Jorgensen, is available on Amazon in both hard copy and eBook format. I teach how to overcome the house advantage. After all, it’s much more fun to win than it is to lose. Who knows, you might even improve your overall Blackjack playing skills too! $

Caesars Entertainment & Arizona Diamondbacks Team Up For Mobile Sports Betting

Caesars Entertainment, Inc. recently announced a partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks to launch mobile sports betting in Arizona and build a first-class sportsbook and bar concept on the plaza adjacent to the team's home, Chase Field. "We went through a thorough process to identify the ideal partner that would bring experience and the strongest of reputations in legalized gaming," said Diamondbacks President & CEO Derrick Hall. "Caesars is considered the cream of the crop and aligns with our philosophy when it comes to professionalism, brand presentation, and customer treatment and brings its best in class William Hill mobile sports book product and retail sports betting expertise. Equally important, we went through our strong due diligence to find the industry leader in the education and execution of responsible gaming," said Hall. The deal simultaneously grants Caesars Entertainment mobile sports betting market access and exclusive sponsorship in sports betting and daily fantasy sports for the Diamondbacks. In tandem, Caesars also finalized a multi-year agreement with Major League Baseball (MLB) to become an Authorized Gaming Operator of the league. "We have long enjoyed successful gaming operations in Arizona and are delighted to expand into sports betting alongside the Arizona Diamondbacks," said Tom Reeg, CEO of Caesars Entertainment.

"Together, we have the opportunity to create new ways for baseball fans to engage with the game both in-person near the ballpark and online anywhere in Arizona. Our ability to tie those into our Caesars Rewards network will create an unbeatable experience for sports fans." Following recent legislation in Arizona that authorized legal sports betting, the agreement between the Diamondbacks and Caesars Entertainment will result in a brand-new, state-of-theart sportsbook, sports bar and broadcast studio at the location formerly known as Game 7 Grill on the Plaza at Chase Field. When sports betting becomes available in the state, fans can download the sports book app to make a bet anywhere in the state. Through mobile betting, fans can earn credits and tier status to unlock incredible experiences through the industryleading loyalty program Caesars Rewards. Credits can be redeemed in the form of unbeatable hospitality, entertainment, food and beverage, and gaming experiences, including access to VIP experiences with the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. The partnerships with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Major League Baseball are the most recent additions to Caesars' growing list of sports relationships, including a recently announced expanded partnership with the NFL. A part of Caesars Entertainment, William Hill opened the first sportsbook inside a U.S. professional sports complex at the world-famous Capital One Arena in 2020. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

BREAKING THE SLOTS! The Technique—Slam Your Fist Down As Hard As You Can

S

ometimes I wonder how the casino industry always manages to serve up something new, all the time, without fail. I’ve concluded it’s a mixture of the 24—7—365 atmosphere, and a few of the patrons. When I received this email with the attached picture [Editor’s Note: The photo was edited to protect the guilty], I could only shake my head. Dear Sami, I’ve disagreed with some of your articles in the past about the noise and the watchers and the smackers. I just thought “Who cares what other people are doing?” But now, I get what you have been saying for all these years. Now, I don’t like the noise. I don’t like when people watch me play slots. I don't like when people say “Oh! You are going to win big in this bonus!” before the bonus even starts! And I see what the smackers are doing to the slots. They are literally breaking them to bits! Check out this picture I took at [casino name removed]! I watched [a couple] hitting the slot so hard, they finally broke it! The noise was astounding. The entire bank of slots was shaking. A security guard was watching them the whole time and did nothing, until after the game broke. Then they asked them to leave, shut the game down and taped it up so no one could get hurt. [The couple] was raising their hands above their heads, making a fist, and slamming their fist down on the buttons. Plus, if they were in the bonus they would beat on both screens! The only reason I watched them is because of how they were behaving and the amount of noise they were making. It was totally unbelievable! Look, I’ve handled plexiglass, plastic, and sheet metal. Once it’s put in place, these materials are not easily damaged unless there is a significant amount of force being used. I guess enough power was used, by their hands!!! Jeff Pearson – Arizona (from email) Thanks for writing me Jeff! I appreciate your feedback and your loyalty as a reader.

I did not have a difficult time believing your story, but I went and looked at the carnage for myself just to reinforce, in my opinion, how bad the behavior has become by some casino patrons. And, obviously, how some casinos don’t care to do anything about it until after something happens. I hope the casino barred the guests and made them pay for the damage to the slot. Maybe that will get through to them. To me, this result is inexcusable on the part of the patrons and the casino. Does security really not comprehend what will happen with this type of behavior? Does security think other patrons will remain unaffected by the poor conduct of a few guests? Does security think patrons who are smacking a slot machine around will not result in damage to the slot? And, that someone won’t get hurt in the process? Seriously? This is what it’s come to? Patrons damaging games past the point of simple maintenance! Yikes! What’s next? $
