e’re extremely fortunate to have so many wonderful casino options available to us in Arizona and the surrounding states, so if you’re one of those people that only visit casinos close to where you live, make this the year you try something different! Chances are, more than a couple of the following top 10 most common New Year’s resolutions will look familiar to you: Exercise more, lose weight, get organized, learn a new skill or hobby, live life to the fullest, save more money/ spend less money, quit smoking, spend more time with family and friends, travel more, read more. How many are on your list this year? As part of my normal daily habits and routines, I incorporate many of the items in the list in my life already. I exercise because health is very important. I’m extremely organized (sometimes to a fault). I have my finances in order. I quit smoking many years ago. Family and friends are one of my top priorities in my life. And, my favorite hobby is reading in addition to casino gaming, traveling, playing racquetball and being fiercely competitive with anyone willing to play Chess or Scrabble with me. However, I am a workaholic and balancing work and pleasure has always been difficult for me. So, at the top of my list of New Year’s resolutions is to have more fun! Have A Lucky Year!

PLAYERS TALK

A QUESTION ABOUT PROGRESSIVES Why Do They Seem To Hit At The Same Value?

T

he question I have is why some progressives hit at the same number every time and others hit at a different number? This seems like cheating to me. I should be able to win a progressive jackpot on any slot at any number! James Berkoff—via email This is a great question James! We think this is very insightful and many of our readers are curious about the topic in general. We’ll provide you with an explanation based on the mathematics behind the design of progressive jackpots in order to answer your question. There are three basic types of progressives. Let’s identify them as Open-Ended, Must-Hit-By, and Maximum-Value. OpenEnded progressives have a starting amount (usually referred to as the base or reset value) and continue to climb until some event occurs and the amount displayed on the meter is awarded. Must-Hit-By progressives also have a base value and continue to climb until some event occurs and the amount displayed on the meter is awarded, or the must-hit-by value is reached and that value is awarded. Maximum-Value progressives are Open-Ended progressives with, obviously, a maximum value the meter will not climb over. As former slot machine game designers, we never liked Maximum-Value progressives because they give an impression the progressive is somehow set up. In any event, once any progressive’s value is awarded, the meter returns to the reset value and the process begins again. Regardless of how the event which awards a progressive actually occurs, there is always some mathematical probability associated with that event. So, let’s use a real-world analogy and keep things simple in order to explain how progressives tend to be awarded at approximately the same value. A standard deck of cards contains 52 different cards. We will associate the Ace of Hearts as the card which, when drawn, awards the progressive. The other 51 cards in the deck do not award anything. Therefore, the chances of awarding the progressive on a single draw of one card out of the deck, after randomly shuffling, is 1 in 52 or 0.0192 or 1.92%. The question now becomes, after how many draws of one card

06 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2022 | azgamingguide.com

out of the randomly shuffled deck will the progressive be awarded? Any ideas? 52, anyone? Let’s prove why the answer is in fact 52! The chances of drawing the Ace of Hearts out of a randomly shuffled deck of cards is 1 in 52. There’s no arguing needed. That’s just mathematical fact. But, the way to reinforce this fact would be to actually shuffle a deck, draw one card, and record the outcome. If the drawn card is the Ace of Hearts, mark “P” for progressive. If not, mark “N” for not. Make sure to repeat this process at least 10,000 times. After recording at least 10,000 results, count up the number of “P” marks made and I’ll wager really good money you’ll have right around 192 “P” marks (remember the probability was 0.0192, or 1.92%). Exactly 192 of them? No, not every time you perform this experiment. But, perform the experiment over and over again and the combined results will show, on average, over time, when you draw from a randomly shuffled deck of cards, every 52nd draw will be the Ace of Hearts (10,000 divided by 192 is about 52). This is why a progressive seems to award at roughly the same value. But, due to randomness, individual outcomes will vary! The main difference with winning our Ace of Hearts progressive and a slot’s progressive is the chances are much smaller. More like 1 in 10,000, or 1 in 100,000. By the way, for now, slot machine regulations prevent the chances of the highest win on a game from surpassing 1 in 50,000,000! Have fun & good luck! $

DEFINING OPTIMUM PLAY What Does It Mean Anyway?

W

e’ve mentioned the words “optimum play,” “best strategy,” and “optimal strategy,” in past articles, but what exactly do these phrases mean?

All three expressions are synonymous and can best be defined as “perfect play.” In other words, every play is made based on what the absolute highest expected value will be. Okay, so what is “expected value?” “Expected value,” or simply put “EV,” is the average payback of a particular play. The EV of any chance event is the average of all possible outcomes. It sounds a lot more confusing than it really is. Trust me! EXAMPLE Let’s assume you are playing 9/6 Jacks or Better and are dealt: 10♠,J♠,Q♥,K♠,2♠

How many of you out there scratch your heads when faced with this kind of situation? Here you have three possible plays (and many more if you don’t have a clue about video poker)! The first option is to hold for the Flush, the second to hold for the Straight, and the third to hold the suited high cards for the Royal Flush. Now, which play is the optimum play? The answer lies with the play that has the highest EV. Since there are 47 cards remaining (52 cards in a deck minus the 5 dealt cards) then this is a straightforward mathematical equation using the concept of probability. If playing for the Flush, the expected value would be the sum of all possible outcomes multiplied by their respective pay: [ 9/47 X 6 ] + [ 6/47 X 1 ] = 1.28 (9 spades left out of the remaining 47 cards that will complete the Flush, times the value of the Flush, which is 6) plus (6 high cards, a K or J, that can be drawn to make a high pair out of the 47 cards remaining, times the value of the high card win, which is 1.) If playing for the Straight, the expected value is: [ 8/47 X 4 ] + [ 9/47 X 1 ] = 0.87 (8 cards left out of the remaining 47 that will complete the Straight, 4 nines and 4 aces, times the value of the Straight, which is 4) plus (9 high cards that can be drawn to make a high pair out of the 47 cards remaining times the value of the high card win, which is 1.) If playing for the Royal Flush, the expected value is: 1.35 (This is a rather lengthy calculation which we’ll not print here) The correct play is to hold for the Royal Flush because, in the long run, for every dollar you wager on this situation, the expected value proves you will make about $1.35. Stay tuned for more discussions about EV and examples using optimum play in upcoming issues. $

TABLE GAMES By Al Moe

LIVE VERSUS DIGITAL CRAPS What Is The Difference?

F

or some craps players, there’s no difference between a video game, a digital craps table, and the real thing: three dealers with dice and chips flying across the layout. I disagree, but we get what we get most times in life. ARIZONA GAME CHOICES There are four types of craps games in casinos these days. The most generic is a single-player video game where you can make bets like Pass and No Pass, take odds, and bet the Field. The dice totals are computer-generated, and the game rates about a two out of ten on my fun meter. In contrast, players have enjoyed the “Giant Dice” electronic games in Arizona for several years now. They offer a group atmosphere, players sit at their own monitors, making most of the wagers found on a standard live game, and everyone watches intently as the dice bounce oddly in the plastic bubble. The downside is that it’s not a table with a shooter throwing the dice; you can only bet a fraction of what you can on a live game, and “It ain’t the same,” as several players have told me. Still, it’s twice as much fun as the video game. FULL TABLE CRAP GAMES With the adoption of real craps in Arizona late last year, players can get a better feel for a live game by playing at a digital craps table. It’s full-sized, and players do toss the dice, but there’s a strange disconnect having to place all your bets (under the pressure of a ticking clock) on a video screen at your own station. The game sports just one dealer stickperson who offers the dice, retrieves them, and calls out the totals. There’s little conversation, no banter, and some boisterous fun. Still, the dealers can offer help if you’ve got questions about the wagers available or how to shoot the dice. But don’t forget the shot clock is in effect! A real game, the standard offering in Vegas, takes three dealers and a Boxman to handle the action when crowds jam around

the table. In Arizona, with the new wager limits (technically up to $100,000 at baccarat, blackjack, craps, and roulette), bets start at a $25 minimum and top out at $2,500 on the new games. There are always three dealers on the craps tables for those limits – and no clock. You can place wagers, take ‘em down, or turn some off on the next roll. Try that on a video game! If you’ve got questions about a bet, want to take full odds on a wager, or need change, the stickperson will hold the dice up to let the inside dealers handle your action. That’s the service you need on a busy craps game. But the best thing about a live game is the player comradery, rooting their wagers to be winners. You can be loud, silly, and excited every roll. A bonus is the stickperson’s corny jokes, dice slang like two-way bets (you and the dealers), snake eyes (a single dot on each of the dice), and boxcars for a total of 12. You probably won’t hear my favorites like “nino-nineo, drunken wino!”, or “niner-niner, Boxman’s a whiner!” But you’ll hear “come-out roll, horn bet, high, low, and yo!” A busy craps game is off the charts fun. $

A SIMPLE CARD COUNTING STRATEGY How It Works, How To Play & How To Bet

I

f a blackjack player knows basic strategy and employs it flawlessly, casinos have about a 0.52% long term advantage, depending on the rules and number of decks used. This means, on average, for every $100 wagered, you would expect to lose 52 cents in the long run. By learning and utilizing a very simple card counting system, you can reduce the house edge even further! This strategy is very easy to master and play. The system recognizes and keeps track of the two most important cards in the deck. For the player, the most valuable card is the Ace. Besides being the essential element for a blackjack, it also enables the player to make hands because its value can be One or Eleven. The most important card for the dealer is the Five, because when hitting hands of 12 through 16, it will give them 17 through 21. HOW THIS SYSTEM WORKS As the cards are dealt from a new shoe, you assign a value of -1 (minus one) to all Aces, and a value of +1 (plus one) to all Fives. By doing this, you know if there is an imbalance of Fives versus Aces on the upcoming hand. You increase your bet when you are more likely to get an Ace, and bet the minimum when there is a surplus of Fives. For example, if the cards are dealt for the first hand and there are three Fives dealt and one Ace, your count would be +2 (plus two) for the upcoming hand. (Three Fives at a value of +1 [plus one] each or +3, and one Ace with a value of -1 [minus one], so the count is 3 - 1 = +2). With this information you now know that for the next hand you are more likely to get an Ace as opposed to a Five. BETTING For a six-deck game, you will bet the minimum when your count is at +2 or lower. If you get a count of +3 or +4 for the upcoming hand, bet twice your minimum bet. When your count is at +5 or higher for the upcoming hand, bet four times your minimum.

Here is a betting chart for a $10 minimum bet six-deck table: COUNT +2 or lower +3 +4 +5 or higher

BET $10 $20 $20 $40

Betting according to your count will reduce a casino's edge because you are increasing your wagers when the composition of the cards for the upcoming hand favor the player, and playing the minimum when the dealer has the advantage. PLAYING THE HANDS You must know and play basic strategy perfectly to maximize the reduction of the casino's edge. There is no room for hunches or gut feelings. How much of a reduction depends on the house rules, number of decks, how well you play basic strategy, and how accurately you keep track of the Aces and Fives. While you will not have a mathematical advantage over the casino using this system, you will be able to reduce the house edge a little bit more than if you were just using basic strategy. In fact, after 25,000 hands you will have a 25% chance of being ahead! If you decide that card counting is for you and would like to take your game to the next level, I cover card counting in my new book. My system keeps track of all the cards as they are dealt, and has a betting and playing strategy according to the count. By playing this way you have a mathematical advantage over any casino. Then it will be you, not the house, who has the advantage when you sit down to play. To maximize your chances for a successful year! By Lana Hartmann

V

isiting any casino is an exciting entertainment option, but before you consider participating in this form of recreation, you need a game plan! It’s important to be just as organized about a trip to the casino as you are preparing for a party or even just doing your weekly grocery shopping. For instance, looking through the weekly ads and collecting coupons or going online can save you a lot of money on your groceries. Furthermore, writing out a grocery list can save you both time and money by introducing order to your shopping—preventing you from forgetting items you may need to go back for again and buying items that aren’t necessary.

20 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2022 | azgamingguide.com

The path towards a “lucky” and “winning” 2022 is to follow some basic guidelines outlined in this article. Do your homework, just like you would for any other entertainment activity before you leave for a casino trip. If you can incorporate a few simple measures into your planning routine this year, you will have taken significant steps towards becoming a smart gambler in 2022. And, if some of the topics are already part of your routine, good for you! Spend the extra time introducing yourself to those concepts you’re not familiar with. If you use this opportunity to make a change and approach your casino entertainment in a new way right now, you’ll certainly have continued positive experiences at the casino this year and many more years to come! Good luck and have fun! Choose Your Casino Wisely A casino is a business, so make sure whichever casino you play at is living up to your expectations. Never choose a casino purely based on convenience. We are lucky to have our pick from so many casinos across the entire state of Arizona and the surrounding states. Try an out-of-town casino you’ve never been to and make it a weekend getaway. You may just find your new favorite!

Common Payback Percentages By Denomination Generally speaking, the higher the denomination the higher the payback percentage is of a game. Based on our team’s combined industry experience and new game installs we’ve been privy to, here’s a breakdown of percentages by the game’s denomination: 1¢ (85-91%), 2¢ (87-91%), 5¢ (88-92%), 10¢ (8993%), 25¢ (92-95%), $1 (93-96%), $2 (94-96%), and $5 (95-97%).

Play Higher Denomination Machines Generally, the higher the denomination the higher the payback percentage. Casinos do this to reward players that are willing to place higher bets. If you play a 50 line penny game at times five for a $2.50 bet, this is the same as playing a 50 line nickel game at times one for the same wager. The nickel game will, most likely, be set at a higher payback percentage.

may not be such a reasonable expectation. If you’re playing the slots at 50 cents per spin, your $100 will buy you 200 spins. You may be done with those spins and out of money in 15 minutes or less if things don’t go well. Always be realistic when setting your budget. You don’t want to be out of money waiting around for your friends or family or, worse yet, running to the ATM machine for more money! Always leave the plastic at home to avoid those exorbitant transaction fees. Always Use A Player’s Card Points accumulated on a player’s card can be used towards cash back and/or free play, food, hotel rooms, show tickets, and more! If you don’t take advantage of the extra benefits that come with using a player’s card, then you’re giving the casino an even greater advantage! Worried that the slot recognizes when a card is inserted and the performance of the game is compromised as a result? Don’t be! The game’s random number generator in each machine is the only factor that determines the outcome of every spin. The card readers, ticket printers, and bill validators are separate mechanisms that are part of a slot machine designed to perform independent functions and one has absolutely nothing to do with the other! Another popular misconception amongst players is that they “don’t play enough to earn anything.” What players forget to take into account is that card readers record the aggregate total amount of ALL money played through a machine (including the wins along the way). It’s not uncommon for a player to put $20 in a machine and play through $200. The card reader records all the money played through the machine and not just the initial money inserted by the player. Therefore, points do add up very quickly during a play session, even when placing low bets. Just be careful, card readers can be sensitive so check that your player’s card is accepted when first inserted into the machine by looking for the welcome message. Then, glance over to the reader on a regular basis to make sure the card is still being registered. (Continued on page 22)

Set A Budget And Be Realistic Establishing a bankroll is one of the most important lessons to learn. You certainly don’t go to the movies without a very good idea as to how much the entire experience will cost you, right? If you don’t consider how many spins on a slot machine or hands at the blackjack table your money will buy you when determining your budget for a night out at the casino, then you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. Bringing $100 with you to the casino if you intend on playing for several hours

Read The Help Screens There are oodles of hints and tips disclosed within the pages of a slot machine’s help screen! The casinos are just hoping that you won’t take the time to read the information that’s there. Besides the pay tables and the basic functionality of the game, here are just a few of the many, many secrets that are hidden in the help screens: 1. Picking Strategies for bonuses. Risk bonuses that involve player decision on whether to “keep win or risk win for higher rewards” are considered strategy (or skill) games. Regulatory agencies heavily scrutinize these types of games and require manufacturers to disclose the “best strategy” for the game in the help screen. 2. Whether or not bonuses are predetermined. Sometimes your picks in bonuses are already predetermined and it just doesn’t matter where you pick. If a regulatory agency feels that a bonus may be misleading to the players, they will force the manufacturers to include a comment in the help screen. 3. Rules for the progressives and bonuses. Knowing which features of a slot game are available for each bet level is important. All these rules are defined in the help screen. 4. If there are multiple reel sets and overloaded reels. Over the course of the past few years, technology now allows slot machine game designers to use multiple sets of reels in the base game and during free games. This is the natural extension to the overloaded reels that were introduced about ten years ago. Overloaded reels assign certain reel positions to be substituted from a set of symbols defined in the help screen. Multiple reel sets are also described in the help screen. Essentially, on any given spin, the slot makes a random selection which set of reels to use. One of the reel sets may have a lot of wilds but no bonus symbols. Another reel set may have a lot of bonus symbols but no wilds. You get the idea, right? So, next time you sit down to play a slot, take a peek at the help screen. You may be surprised to find what’s there! Sign Up For Free Slot Tournaments Many casinos are starting to offer short, usually 15 or 20 minute, free tournaments that give you a chance to win cash and prizes without having to risk any of your own money! Play With Cold Hard Cash Picture yourself sitting at a blackjack table pulling out one $10 bill after the other and betting on each hand with real money rather than plastic chips! I believe it would feel very different. The same goes for the ticket vouchers for the slot machines. Don’t move from one machine to another with a ticket in hand. A $100 ticket just doesn’t feel the same as five twenties feel in our hands. You may just think twice about staying at a machine if you have to dig into your purse for that second or third $20

22 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2022 | azgamingguide.com

bill! So, whether you’re playing with chips or tickets, don’t forget that they both still represent cold hard cash. Always keep that in the back of your mind when you’re at the casino! Bet Max When Playing Progressives If you’re going to play a slot machine that is hooked up to a progressive, make sure you are playing max bet. Slot manufacturers are designing more and more games that only award progressives to players that are playing max bet. You don’t want to be sitting at a machine feeding the progressive meters if these awards aren’t even accessible to you! The other type of progressive slots that are very popular are those that happen randomly and don’t require you to bet max to qualify for the progressives. However, the player that is wagering the most at the bank has the best chance of being selected by the progressive controller. (Yes, that is why that max bet player keeps winning the progressive!) If you can’t afford to play max bet on a progressive slot or be the biggest bettor at the bank that has randomly triggered progressives, then just don’t play these types of games. Make sure to check the help screen for the rules! Cover All The Pay Lines All The Time This is one of the biggest mistakes we see players making when we walk casino floors. Playing all the pay lines increases your chances of hitting a winning combination on more lines. This is particularly important for the large number of games that have bonus events triggered by symbols landing on active pay lines. If, for example, you decide to “save money” by playing only 20 lines on a 30 line game, you’re actually decreasing the winning combinations available in the game and going through your bankroll even faster. In some cases, playing 30 lines can give you up to 50% higher hit frequency over playing only 20 lines, and who doesn’t want to win more often? Apprehensive about what we’re saying? Do a comparison and see for yourself. Play $10 at 20 lines and $10 at 30 lines on the same game. You’ll feel the increased wins. The extra 10 lines will pay off during the base game and will really pay off during a free games bonus with much larger bonus wins on average. (Continued on page 24)

(Continued from page 22)

Take Advantage Of Double/Triple Offers On The Same Day Casinos, whether intentionally or unintentionally, sometimes send out several offers for the same day. It’s even better when you can take advantage of a raffle or a drawing while there as well. Carefully examine all the offers sent to you by the casino and visit during the most opportune times. In addition, many casinos offer great deals during the week on food, lodging, and golf. Playing with a player’s card may even earn you 2X to 10X more points on a weekday! Try Something Different Look at all the options available to you at the casinos! Not only are there a lot of different kinds of slot machine games, but there are several other casino games you might find entertaining as well. Changing what games you play on a regular basis will help keep things fresh and interesting for you. Consider playing blackjack, but don’t play using hunches the way most players do. Learn basic strategy and stick to it in all situations. It’s not hard and should take less than 2 hours to learn. In doing so, you will be able to decrease the house edge down to almost zero. Don’t be intimidated to ask a dealer or a pit boss if the casino offers “training sessions” for new players. Bingo is also another excellent option! Just $5 to $10 a pack offers several hours of entertainment—you can’t beat that! If you’re willing to risk a little more money, you can increase your odds of winning by purchasing more packs. Bingo is a really fun activity you can do on your own or with friends and family! Calculating The Bonus Pulls-To-Hit First, sit down at your favorite slot machine and as soon as you begin your play session, start counting how many spins it takes to get into the bonus. Then, start keeping track of each bonus. For example, say it takes 116 spins to hit the bonus the first time, then 155 spins to hit it again, then 77 spins, and then 132. Add all the numbers together, 116+155+77+132=480 and then divide by the total number of bonuses played (in this case 4). On average, it takes 120 spins to trigger a bonus on this game!

Know The Bonus Pulls-To-Hit The most important number every true slot enthusiast should know is the bonus pulls-to-hit (the average number of spins it takes to trigger a bonus event), even if it’s just a ballpark figure. There is a mathematical model behind each slot game, so you don’t have to rely on blind luck when playing the slots. First of all, this number is important because it helps you determine an appropriate amount for your bankroll. Let’s assume that your favorite slot game has a bonus pulls-to-hit of 120 (see example above). If you intend on wagering 75¢ per spin and it takes 120 spins to get into the bonus, then you can expect to spend about

24 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2022 | azgamingguide.com

$90 before you trigger a bonus. Therefore, a reasonable bankroll for this scenario would be $100. This amount of money would, most likely, allow you to experience the game’s bonus at least once. And, as all of us who play the slots know, the bonuses are where the players have the best chance of making a little bit of money. Second of all, knowing a game’s bonus pulls-to-hit provides you with a base value for comparison. In other words, when you’re aware of what your typical performance is on a particular slot game you can have certain expectations. If you reach your $100 mark but haven’t triggered a bonus, then it may be time to end the play session and come back to the machine at another time. Here’s a general rule of thumb: highly volatile slots usually take over 180 spins (on average) to get into a bonus, medium volatility slots take about 120 spins (on average) to trigger a bonus, and less volatile slots have a much lower average pulls-to-hit of between 60 and 80 spins. Slow Down Finishing more spins than the person next to you is not going to earn you a prize. Playing super fast only puts you at risk for losing money quickly and potentially shortening your play session! Slot machine manufacturers have gone to great lengths to program exciting sounds and animations into the games. Never play more than one machine at a time. Playing two or three machines at once just means you are risking your money two to three times faster. Don’t play frantically. Sit back, let the credits rack up, and enjoy all the wonderful win presentations. Take What You Win Home Unfortunately, chances are you’re just not going to break even or get ahead at the casino. That’s just plain fact. Even if you’re playing the highest payback percentage games, you’re still most likely to fall short of what you came with. So, during those times you do manage to get ahead, stop playing! Casino games have a way of sensing when a person becomes greedy! Enjoy the win and take it home. $

“Santan Mountain” Fourth Gila River Hotels & Casinos Property To Open In 2023 160 Acres, $150+ Mil., 850 Slots, Table Games, BetMGM Sportsbook & More

Gila River Hotels & Casinos officially announced its newest project, Santan Mountain, at a groundbreaking ceremony recently on Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) land south of Chandler. During the momentous ceremony, GRIC, Gila River Hotels & Casinos and project leadership invited partners and state officials to celebrate the historic addition of Gila River’s fourth casino, which was approved by the State’s reinstated and amended gaming compact last May. Described as a “modern, inviting desert oasis,” the dynamic entertainment and gaming venue on the southeast corner of Gilbert Road and Hunt Highway will continue growing the legacy of Gila River Hotels & Casinos in Arizona. With over 27 years of exceptional gaming experience, this new venue was cultivated to bring a desired entertainment destination and convenient location to the growing Southeast Valley. The development will boast lush décor, breathtaking mountain views and state-of-the-art amenities set against the backdrop of the pristine, picturesque desert. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis and Gila River Hotels & Casinos CEO Kenneth Manuel simultaneously unearthed fresh dirt with the project team which includes Steelman Partners, The PENTA Building Group, Tynan Group and the Casino Expansion Owners Team. Governor Lewis shared his deep appreciation for Community members and his excitement for the future. “Not only will Santan Mountain bring additional revenue, sustainability and critical services to our Community members, it will elevate our prestige in the gaming and hospitality industry

26 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2022 | azgamingguide.com

as we continue to craft an entertainment dynasty,” he said, adding that the project is estimated to create 650 new jobs. When complete, Santan Mountain will include more than 850 slots and table games including mini baccarat, craps and roulette as well as an exclusive High Limit Gaming Salon. The BetMGM sportsbook will extend the casino floor and offer plush seating, multiple large-screen TVs for viewing live games and convenient sports betting. The new property will also provide multiple dining options and a lively bar in the center of the casino floor featuring entertainment. A hotel may be added in the future. The project also calls for road and other infrastructure improvements in the surrounding area. Gila River’s Casino Expansion Owner’s Team (CEOT) Chairman and Councilman Anthony Villareal, Sr. expressed his appreciation for the many people who came together to bring the project to fruition. “I’m so proud to witness this historic moment, which really is a testament to the hard work of our board and the collaboration of our partners and team members,” Villareal said. “We will have many exciting milestones ahead with Santan Mountain, and all of them will be beneficial to our Community.” The gaming enterprise is also slated to open a $143 million expansion project at Wild Horse Pass later this year —bringing 205 additional guest rooms, new meeting space, two pools and a rooftop restaurant and lounge to the Chandler property. The project marks the first expansion since Wild Horse Pass opened in 2009. GRIC operates Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass and Lone Butte, both in Chandler, and Vee Quiva in the West Valley. For details, visit PlayAtGila.com. $

Desert Diamond Casinos Launches First Phase of New Sportsbook

Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment is proud to announce the launch of its Desert Diamond Sportsbook capabilities at its Sahuarita and West Valley locations. The first phase of operations, which will include betting kiosks, went live after a ribbon cutting ceremony with leaders from the Tohono O’odham Nation and the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise. Through a partnership with Kambi, Desert Diamond Sportsbook will be one of Arizona’s only locally owned operations, unlike most Arizona Sportsbooks which are run by out-of-state corporate entities. Local ownership allows for personalized service, and profits from the operation are reinvested here in Arizona. The first phase includes six betting kiosks at the Sahuarita location and eight at the West Valley sportsbook. Located adjacent to the two properties’ sports bars, sportsbook patrons can enjoy great food, drinks, and wall-to-wall TV screens while betting on their favorite teams. Sports wagering operations will continue to grow at the Tucson, Sahuarita, and West Valley locations as more kiosks and live over-the-counter services are added. An online sportsbook under the newly created Desert Diamond Mobile LLC will also open in the near future. “We are thrilled to offer a whole new level of gaming entertainment to our guests,” said Mike Bean, CEO of the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise. “The new Desert Diamond Sportsbook will also add more excitement to our gaming floors, where there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

28 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2022 | azgamingguide.com

Bean went on to say, “Hosting our own Sportsbook using the Kambi platform is unique in Arizona and ensures the more personalized service that is the hallmark of Desert Diamond Casinos.” The launch of the new sportsbooks is the latest in a series of major changes for Desert Diamond Casinos, including: • Launch of live craps, roulette, and mini baccarat at the West Valley, Sahuarita and Tucson properties • Expanded gaming areas at the Tucson location’s Monsoon Room and at West Valley • Re-opening the Bingo Room at the Tucson location for first time since the start of the pandemic • Resumption of 24/7 operations at Tucson and Sahuarita properties Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment, with three locations in Southern Arizona (Tucson, Sahuarita, and Why) and one in the West Valley, is owned and operated by the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, an enterprise of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Originating in mid-19th century France, you might recognize it from several movies featuring the greatest British Secret Service agent of all time! SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

ALWAYS CHECK A CASINO’S PAY TABLES And Don’t Forget To Check Their Food & Drink Prices Too!

O

ur magazine has always advocated our readers be informed gamblers. In most cases, a lot of very valuable information can be found about the slot you’d like to play in the help screen. Accessing the help screen is usually only a button press or touch away. We’ve always instructed you to read though all the pages available to you. If you are a video poker player, the help screen displays not only the rules of the game but the pay table as well. Looking at the pay table provides us all with the knowledge of the exact long run expectation (house hold) for the game offered by the casino. Always check to see the differences in video poker pay tables across denominations and on all the games at a casino. Every now and then, you’ll find a true gem where the house hold is really small (less than 1%) or may even be in your favor. For video poker, finding a pay table in your favor can easily happen if the game is connected to a progressive. The same is true for video keno. The pay table tells the whole story. And, we’ve found differences between games and between denominations even on the same unit! Not to mention looking at different units in different areas of the casino (say the bar as opposed to near the buffet)! The importance of checking pay tables and rules may also apply to electronic blackjack, roulette, craps, and other table games. Although it is much less likely to occur as casinos tend to have a fewer number of these electronic games available on their floor.

drinker to begin with, but differences in wine prices, let me know! I understand why there are differences between pay tables on video poker, video keno, and even electronic table games. The higher the denomination, the more money is on the line for players and the casino. A video poker game with a $5 wager at a 1% house hold over time averages out to $0.05 (five cents) per bet for the casino. In order to get those same five cents on a quarter video poker game (a $1.25 wager), the house hold has to be 4%. This makes sense for an entertainment company designed around loyalty. Spend more, get more back.

But, did you ever think to check the food and drink menus? We didn’t! Until recently, when a reader tipped us off that a casino they play at was selling domestic drafts for $6 at one bar and the same domestic drafts for $5 at another bar!

There are variations on the theme of different pay tables across the casino on different units. Every now and then a Slot Director leaves and a new one comes on board. That new person’s philosophy on house hold now has to be absorbed into the existing casino’s management style. Maybe the new Slot Director can implement their own decisions for video poker pay tables and that’s why you may see a difference between games. There may also have been some time since a new video poker unit was bought or leased and installed. Once the new game goes live, the pay table may be different simply because no one bothered to check what was already out there on the old games.

Seriously???!!! We asked a few employees about the snafu, and they just laughed saying the food and beverage sales system was configured differently at each bar. Apparently the casino fixed their mistake now so you can’t order a cheaper beer at one end of the casino than at the other. Too bad! I’m not a big beer

In any event, start adding alcohol, snacks, and other common food items to your list of items to price check at a casino! Have fun and drop me a note at Sami@AZGamingGuide.com if you have something to share or there’s a topic you’d like me to discuss! $

In any event, I think I’ve made my point! Check the pay tables on video poker, video keno, and electronic table games, at each casino and between casinos to gain any advantage you can.
