Superstitions: Things You Mustn’t Do!
VOLUME 14 • ISSUE 02 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com
F
ebruary 1st, 2022 marks the start of the Lunar New Year. This year, it’s the year of the Water Tiger according to the Asian Zodiac. Asian people traditionally believe that the year's start affects the whole year, so the Spring Festival (beginning with the Lunar New Year) is a season of superstitions. Just like the Gregorian calendar’s New Year’s Day and the traditions associated with it around the world and across cultures, there are many things you must not do on the day of the Lunar New Year: Do not make or eat porridge as it may bring poverty in the new year. Do not wash hair or clothes as it may wash away good luck. Do not work with needles as it may deplete wealth. Do not use any “unlucky” words like “pain” as it may bring pain. Do not sweep as it may sweep away wealth. Don’t cry as it may bring bad luck. Don’t break dishes as it may bring misfortune. Don’t use scissors or knives as they may “cut” wealth. Do not lend or borrow money as it may lead to debt. Do not wear black or white clothes as they are unlucky colors. Do not have or handle odd amounts of money as it may be unlucky. Do not visit the hospital as it may bring illness. I’m going to incorporate this list into my day on February 1. It’ll be a lot of fun to practice these Asian traditions on the day of the Lunar New Year! Again, Have A Lucky Year!

PLAYERS TALK
A QUESTION ABOUT VIDEO POKER Do Higher Denomination Video Poker Slots Pay More Often?
My friend and I have a bet. What else would you expect from gamblers? He suggests that on poker slots, especially the $1, $5, or higher dollar slots, the payout frequency is higher. My position is that this is not true. That the dollar amount bet has little or nothing to do with the frequency of wins. The random number generator (RNG) has no concern of frequency of hitting unlike reel slots which may have a bias towards more wins at higher bets. What is the correct answer? Walt Obremski—Green Valley, AZ
2. The game’s rules and/or the RNG cheats. The problem with statement 1 is that every video poker game clearly indicates it is using a standard 52 card deck. Unless a patron chooses to play Joker Poker, then the 52 card standard deck is augmented by one card, the Joker.
The correct answer is the denomination of the game (what you refer to as the dollar amount) has no bearing on the payout frequency of any video poker win.
Fortunately, all video poker games are recreating a real game and, as such, gaming industry regulations prevent the video poker game’s computer program from being deceptive. That is to say, making the Ace of Hearts less likely to be drawn. Rest assured that every card has an equal chance of being drawn by a video poker machine regardless of denomination or the particular type of game you choose to play!
A RNG has no bias regardless of if it is installed in a video poker game, a slot machine, a video keno machine, or any other electronic gaming device (EGD), such as the electronic versions of blackjack, craps, roulette, etc.. Just to be clear, all RNGs used in casinos do not have any bias regardless of bet level or denomination! While a slot machine’s game may allow a jackpot to be available at max bet, or a bonus to occur more often, rest assured that is a direct implementation of a game rule and not governed by the RNG! For example, one of the simplest ways to make a bonus occur more frequently at a higher bet is to add more bonus symbols to the reel strips of the game. However, the RNG is still just an RNG. Changes were made only to the reel strips not the RNG. An RNG’s sole function is to deliver random numbers; the slot machine’s reel strips and game rules decide what to do with those numbers independent of bet, denomination, what day it is, if a player’s club card is inserted or not, or if the previous spin was a winner (or a loser, or a bonus, or a jackpot, or…). Another way to convince your friend would be to point out the contradiction inherent in his argument. The only way for the frequency of large wins to change is twofold: 1. The deck of cards has changed and contains extra high cards to allow for more Royal Flushes, or even extra Aces to have more Four-Of-A-Kinds in Aces, usually a higher paying win.
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2022 | azgamingguide.com
If you don’t believe me, check the help screen on any video poker game in any casino. Trust me, a statement about using a standard deck of cards will be there.
The problem with statement 2 is that every EGD in a casino anywhere is not only subject to strict gaming industry regulations, it is also tested by an independent third party in order to establish the randomness, lack of cheating, and accuracy of the RNG and game play. In fact, all EGDs are tested three times. Once by the quality control department within the manufacturer of the EGD, then by an independent third party testing facility, and finally by the local gaming jurisdiction’s oversight agency. All this testing is to ensure the accuracy of the game’s play and wins after the game mathematician and programmer have implemented what the game’s designer had in mind. And, the mathematician and the programmer also ran their own accuracy tests before their quality control department ever had a chance to inspect the game! How do we know? Because the staff here at the Arizona Gaming Guide has been there and done that! So, unless your friend is a die hard conspiracy theorist, the idea that higher denomination video poker games have more frequently occurring wins is not true. Congratulations Walt! You Win! $

BANKROLL How Much Should I Bring For Video Poker?
D
epending on the denomination of the video poker game you intend on playing, you must always have a predetermined amount of money planned for your play session. This is referred to as your bankroll.
When people ask me how much money they should bring to the casino, I tell them my general rule of thumb: If I intend on playing a nickel machine (max bet $0.25), then I plan on bringing $20 for every hour of desired play time. Then, I just multiply this amount by the denomination of the machine. So, if I intend on playing a quarter machine (max bet $1.25), then I plan on bringing $100 for every hour of play time, $200/hour for a fifty cent machine (max bet $2.50), $400/hour for a dollar machine (max bet $5.00), and so on. This is advice I give casual and recreational players. For those who want to play the games at the level of a dedicated professional video poker player, you need to come to the casino with a large enough bankroll to survive long enough to win. For a serious attempt at walking away with a significant win playing video poker, you must be financially prepared to lose half the value of a Royal Flush during a session. For example, this means coming to the casino with $100 if playing nickels (Royal Flush is $200), $500 if playing quarters (Royal Flush is $1,000) and $2,000 if playing a dollar machine (Royal Flush is $4,000). Furthermore, many serious video poker enthusiasts are able to play around 600 hands per hour! So, if you are one of those types of players, multiply 600 by your bet in order to come up with a bankroll amount. That number guarantees you’ll be at the casino for one hour, even if you lose all 600 hands! Also, keep in mind the casino floor is changing when it comes to video poker. The single hand games are becoming harder and harder to find. In their place are multi-hand games (up to 100 hands) and specialty games where you can be expected to wager 5 credits for a single hand and from 1 to 5 additional credits to qualify for multipliers, a bonused pay table, or other game features. If those are your games, make sure you take the additional money needed to complete the wager into account Remember, your bankroll is the predetermined amount of money you can afford to lose. Never, under any circumstances, should you exceed this amount. Good luck and have fun. $

PLAYERS CLUB & ACTION TRACKING How Is My Play Being Evaluated?
C
asino player clubs are popular with most gamblers because they offer signup bonuses, discounts on meals and hotel rooms, and freebies earned through play. However, I’ve talked to players who don’t use a card for fear that the slot machines know who they are, and therefore they know if they are winning or losing. The scary part is those players are right! The slot machines don’t know how you are doing (but the casino does), and the slots can’t make any adjustments in odds or favorability based on your play. Slots are random, cold-hearted machines with no souls. For those of you who think that’s the exact definition of a Pit Boss, it’s not. Pit Bosses aren’t random. As for the cards, your play is automatically updated in whatever software system the casino you love is using. The more you play, the more rewards you get. Bet more, play faster, get more cash back and perks—end of the story. TABLE GAME TRACKING In the pit, tracking is a different story. Pit Bosses are human (yes, I’ve checked), and they can’t watch twenty players at once and keep perfect accounting for every wager and win or loss. Still, they’re pretty nice about things. Half the fun of gambling is changing your bets as you win, lose, or get that burst of inspiration to follow a streak. And the good news is that while experienced Floor Supervisors try hard to be accurate, they also tend to round up on wagers. If you’ve been betting $15 to $30, they’ll probably give you an average wager of $25. The busier your supervisor is, the more likely you’ll get additional time on your card after you leave, since they won’t always be able to get to your final accounting for a few minutes. Your overall play is likely to be reflected accurately or even a bit in your favor over several sessions. Also, keep in mind that the supervisor is simply entering the details of your play into the casino’s computer. Each table game has a formula pre-entered that automatically gives you points based on your average wager and your choice of games. Rates

are different for blackjack, craps, roulette, and other Arizona table games. Slot players play more hands per hour than table game players. A video poker player might get 300 hands on average, while a blackjack player might only get 60 hands each hour. That makes a massive difference in the overall rewards that slot players can earn, compared to a table games player. If the slot player bets $5 per spin and the table games player bets $25 per bet, their total hourly wagers will be very similar, but the slot player will still earn double or more each hour in rewards because their game has a higher house edge. On the other hand, it’s easier to get a free drink at the tables, and it’s easier to get noticed, so if you want to ask for a discounted hotel room or a sporting event ticket, you’ll have an excellent chance to score as a regular player. Oh, and like milk in the fridge, the points on your players club card have an expiration date. You must play to keep them current, or you may lose them. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF Trust Me, You Will Win More With Basic Strategy!
W
hen you talk to most players about their casino experience, they will tell you about their big wins and, according to them, how they almost never lose.
I recently went to the casino with a friend. Let’s call her Rebecca (that’s not her real name). According to her, she makes a lot of money playing blackjack. So, I decided I’d watch her play. One of the decisions she made which immediately caught my attention was she would hit a hard 17 against a dealer up card of a 10. I told her players will bust that hand over half the time as there are only 4 cards out of 13 that won’t bust it (an Ace, a 2, a 3, and a 4)! But, of course, she’d get lucky, catch a 4 and then say, “See, I know what I am doing!” Argh! Another decision she would make is to stand on a hard 13 against a dealer up card of an Ace. I politely informed her that the dealer only breaks 10% of the time when showing an Ace in the long run. In other words, the dealer will make a hand about 90% of the time. Also, she would be dealt an 11 against a dealer up card of a 6 and refuse to double down. Her explanation was she didn’t want to risk the extra money. Yet, a few hands later, I’d watch her split 5s against a 10! After about 30 minutes of this I told her, “Playing the way you play, you give the casino about a 20% edge over you!” This is in direct contrast to a perfect basic strategy player, against whom the casino only has an advantage of 0.57%.
The pit boss walks over and says, “Let him do it.” The guy catches a 3 for 21 (the dealer did have 20)! So, Mr. Inebriated wins $10,000. On the next hand, he wagers $5,000 again. This time he has a 9 and a 10 for 19. The dealer, again, shows a 10. Beside himself, the player says “Double Down!” This time, the dealer hands him a 2 for 21 (and again the dealer had twenty). All of a sudden, the player falls over backwards in his chair and passes out on the floor. Security helps him and $20,000 of the casino’s money to his room. While this “gentleman” experienced a short run win, if he would have kept playing this way, the odds would have caught up to his style of play and he would have lost all of his money. You can only play the fool and work your hunches for so long before the odds take over. I will say this, when the drunk woke up the next afternoon with an extra $20,000, if he could recall the events of the night before at the table, he probably thought he is one hell of a blackjack player. If you want to find out how you really do at the casino, keep a notebook. And be honest. Record where you played, the date you played, and how much you won or lost. At the end of the month you will know. Certainly by the end of the year. Then, maybe players like Rebecca will learn basic strategy after discovering their truth.
In the short run, you can be the worst player on the planet and sometimes win! But, playing the way Rebecca plays, you will end up a loser most of the time. For example, you can flip a coin 5 times and get 5 heads in one streak. But, if you flip that coin 1,000 times, you will get pretty close to 500 tails and 500 heads. That’s just fact.
If you decide that card counting is for you and would like to take your game to the next level, I cover card counting in my new book. My system keeps track of all the cards as they are dealt, and has a betting and playing strategy according to the count. By playing this way you have a mathematical advantage over any casino. Then it will be you, not the house, who has the advantage when you sit down to play. My book How to Become a Blackjack Jedi, by TJ Jorgensen, is available in digital and printed versions at Amazon.com. $
It reminds me of one time, long ago, when I was in Las Vegas playing blackjack at the Stardust (now a parking lot). Around 4 a.m. some guy arrives really intoxicated (he can barely stand, pun intended) and bets $5,000 on one hand of blackjack. He is dealt a 10 and an 8 for hard 18 and the dealer shows a 10. The guy says, “Double Down!” The Dealer responds, “Sir, you have 18!” The drunk says, “Double Down!” at the top of his lungs.
Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the World Series Of Blackjack. His newest book “How To Become A Blackjack Jedi” is available online at Amazon.com.

o you know the number one reason why we lose at the casino? If you think it’s the house edge, you’re wrong. That’s the second reason. The main reason we lose at the casino is because there’s a little urchin that comes out from time to time, most often uninvited, and he’s the reason we lose.
D
ate best when we adhere to a schedule. The human body is capable of doing incredible things, but only when treated properly. All of us who participate in gambling for entertainment purposes can point to at least one casino trip where we could have made better choices. We lost because we were our own worst enemy.
This urchin, who’s actually more like an imp, enjoys the challenge of going up against the casino. He sees himself as some sort of superhero who can defy all odds. The 24/7 rhythm of the casino doesn’t intimidate him. We humans and our biorhythms, on the other hand, are not equipped to do what the little urchin inside of us can. But we try anyway, to no avail.
We’ve all been guilty of gambling late into the night, way past when our bodies were telling us that it was time to quit. And, how many of us have come home with screaming headaches due to eye strain or not hydrating ourselves enough while at the casino? What about the times we ate everything in sight for dinner at the buffet because we gambled through lunch?
The fact of the matter is no human being can match the casino’s rhythm because human beings are creatures of habit. We oper-

the casino intoxicated, tired, achy, hungry, thirsty, with a sore behind, then we’re probably also leaving broke. What we end up doing to ourselves is not only feeling physically awful but emotionally crappy as well. What about the classic, “I won, but I gave it all back” nightmare? This hurts more than the worst hangover possible. We finally win something at the casino, something worth bragging about to our friends and family, but we have nothing to show for it. This is usually about the time Cher’s song comes to mind, “If I could turn back time, If I could find a way …” Well there is no “way” other than preventing it from happening to begin with. The casino is a fun place and there’s a thrill associated with the risk involved with gambling. No one can deny that. But, there needs to be discipline. Don’t ever allow yourself to be your own worst enemy at the casino. If you find yourself saying, “I wish I would have, could have, or should have …” then you need to take a step back and see how you can modify your behavior for the better.
Know When It’s Time To Go Home Can’t tell if that card is a three or a five? Are the cute little piggies on screen starting to look more like fat ducks? Are you having a hard time keeping up with the bingo numbers? Maybe your brain has had enough. Your body is tired and you’re yawning every few seconds for a reason. It’s time to go home. Listen To Your Body Do you feel thirsty? Order a drink. Is your stomach growling? Eat something. If you don’t eventually do what your body tells you to do, you’re going to regret it. Your body will get pissed off if you decide to smoke too much, don’t hydrate yourself, drink too much, and don’t eat enough. Celebrate Your Luck When lady luck has been kind to you, celebrate the occasion and appreciate your winnings! Don’t use that money as an opportunity to chase after more money. And, by the way, telling yourself, “I’m playing with the casino’s money” to make yourself feel better is ridiculous. Once you win it, it’s your money! If you lose those winnings, you’ve lost your money not the casino’s money. It stopped being the casino’s money as soon as it appeared in your credit meter or in front of you at the tables or in your hands. Be smart, put your winnings aside and don’t give it back to the casino.
Get Up And Walk Around Don’t sit for hours on end at the tables or in front of the slots. Get up, walk around, take a break, use the restroom, get a drink. It’s simply not healthy to sit in one place for extended periods of time.
Make it a New Year’s Resolution for 2022 and say, “I will not be my own worst enemy at the casino.” $
Stick To Your Bankroll Determine the amount of money that you can afford to part with before you get to the casino. Always keep in mind that this money is for entertainment purposes. Don’t ever go to a casino with the intention of making money. I swear that the casino games have a way of sensing when a person becomes greedy. If you let greed take over, then you’re doomed.

Mazatzal Hotel & Casino February 24
Mazatzal Hotel & Casino April 30
February 24th, Mazatzal welcomes country music legend Joe Nichols. Joe Nichols has been a mainstay of country music for two decades, bridging the gap between the genre’s old school roots and contemporary era. He’s a 21st century traditionalist; an artist who’s both timely and timeless, racking up a halfdozen Number 1 singles and ten Top 10 hits that honors his heroes. From his first radio hits, 2002’s “The Impossible & Brokenheartsville,” to 2005’s “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” to 2021’s “Home Run,” Nichols has proudly done things his own way, blurring the boundaries between country music’s past and present along the way.
April 30th, Mazatzal welcomes country music legend, Neal McCoy. Neal McCoy has released fifteen studio albums. In 1993, Neal McCoy broke through with the back-to-back number 1 singles “No Doubt About It” and “Wink” from his platinum-certified album No Doubt About It. His commercial success continued into the late 1990s with two more platinum albums and a gold album, as well as six more Top Ten hits. A seventh Top Ten hit, the number 10 “Billy's Got His Beer Goggles On,” came in 2005 from his self-released That's Life. A new studio album, XII, arrived in 2012 co-produced by Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert. In 2013 he released Pride: A Tribute to Charley Pride, Neal's longtime friend and mentor. 2015 brought the Big Band Standards CD You Don't Know Me. Neal has been on 17 USO Tours around the world and continues to say it's one of the achievements he's most proud of. He is also the recipient of multiple Humanitarian awards from The Academy of Country Music, The Country Radio Broadcasters and The Masonic Grand Lodge. In 2016 Neal has again made a move to continue his patriotic values by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance "Live" on his Facebook page every morning. He's reached millions of viewers all over the country and around the world. Currently he is at approximately 1500 days in a row and going strong. Neal still maintains a very busy touring schedule all through the year. Make sure to catch a show because as Neal says, "No two shows are the same!" Neal McCoy, only at Mazatzal Hotel & Casino!
Carrying the torch for traditional country music is a full-time job, even for a legend in the making. Joe Nichols continues to meet the challenge with the same roll-up-your-sleeves work ethic that helped launch his career decades earlier, mixing sharp songwriting, a palpable appreciation for the genre’s past, and modern melodies into his own sound. There’s more music to make. More milestones to chase down. More home runs to knock out of the park. The game is still unwinding, but Joe Nichols has already hit his home run. Joe Nichols, only at Mazatzal Hotel & Casino! Tickets are $50 in advance ($60 if purchased after February 17, 2022). The event is open to guests 21+. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available online at MazatzalCasino.com or at the cashier cage. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
SLOTS ONLY PAY AT MAX VOLUME... Yeah! Right! Turn The Sound Down, You’ll Win More!
R
ecently, I received a letter from a reader that was a little difficult to believe. To summarize, the reader explained he was playing at a casino on his favorite slot when another patron sat down at the game next to him. First, as an aside, perhaps you've noticed that many casinos are getting louder, and louder, and louder. Why? Because the slots are set to, what I believe are, obnoxiously loud volume levels. What many readers may not know is the slot machine manufacturers have an internal software control for the volume. This can be adjusted by the casino. Then, additionally, the user controlled volume adjustments can also affect the relative loudness of the game. I think you already know where this is going, right? Moving on, the reader claimed in his letter that the slot he was at was set really loud so he turned it down in order to better enjoy the game. The patron next to him, however, had maxed out the volume control on her slot. Apparently, her volume level ensured the reader could not hear anything on his game. So, in order to be able to hear his own game, he decided to match the loudness of her machine by jacking up the volume to max level on his machine as well! Until, of course, he couldn’t take it anymore. At which point the reader claimed to have politely asked the player next to him to turn down her game so both of them could better enjoy the slots at a more reasonable volume. The response was, “I’m not turning anything down because you can only win if the slot is at its maximum volume!” Our reader laughed because he thought she was just being sarcastic or making a joke. Unfortunately for our reader, she got mad and yelled back at him “IT’S TRUE!“ Well, what can I say? I’ve got nothing. Oh, wait! I got something! Slot machine regulations. “Game Fairness. The following requirements shall apply to the fairness of the game: a) Games that are designed to give a player the perception that they have control over the outcome of the game due to skill or dexterity, when they actually do not (i.e., the game outcome is random and the illusion of skill is for entertainment value only), shall fully disclose this fact within the game help screens; b) Games shall not include any hidden source code that can be leveraged by a player to circumvent the rules of play and/
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | February 2022 | azgamingguide.com
or the intended behaviors of game design; this requirement shall not preclude reasonably identifiable discovery features offered by a game which are intentional from a design perspective, but which may be undocumented or unknown to the player.” I think any reasonable individual will agree the volume control button is for “entertainment value” only. And, if not, the slot has to disclose the volume control does provide “control over the outcome of the game” in the help screen. Yeah, go ahead and try to find that kind of a statement in a slot’s help screen. Can you imagine? “Turn up the volume for maximum wins! No, really, believe us!” If the slot machine manufacturers are able to get that into the regulatory environment, then nobody should gamble on a slot. Ever! How would that be fair? What if the speakers were broken? Or, one casino set the game just a little louder or softer than another on the internal software control? Perhaps if the slots weren't set SO DARN LOUD that it gives people a headache, we’d actually win more and win more often because the casino would be a more enjoyable environment to play in! If you want loud, wait until AC/DC goes back on tour where they salute those about to rock at over 120dB! Remember, rock and roll ain’t noise pollution at their concerts. Have fun and drop me a note at Sami@AZGamingGuide.com if you have something to share or there’s a topic you’d like me to discuss! $
