any of our readers are wondering why we are reporting on sports betting when we are primarily focused on slots, the big attraction, on casino floors.
I get it. Who cares about sports betting? Well, someone cares, and it’s not just casino executives. It’s you, our readers. To the tune of $499,213,733.39 from December 1 to 31, 2021 for Event Wagering and another $4,974,390.68 during the same time period for Fantasy Sports Contest entry fees. Of which, the State of Arizona received $1,748,784.20 in total privilege fees. Nonetheless, that’s over half a billion dollars wagered in one way or another on sports in Arizona. Let’s just have that number sink in and simmer in our minds for a bit. No wonder Ted Vogt, Director of the Arizona Department of Gaming, had this to say about the December 2021 numbers, “With a new record for total wagers and payouts in December, I am excited to see the continued strong start to the state’s event wagering & fantasy sports market. I look forward to seeing the benefits to Arizona as the market further develops.” Remember though, there were $459,390,805.57 paid out in winnings during the same month. That’s a lot of winners! So, operators “only” had gross revenues of $38,596,499.92 as a group for the month. Regardless of how large the Tribal Gaming numbers are during a given month, these sports betting numbers are big. And the natural question is, where did it come from? So, ask around. Your family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers are all candidates. And, there are quite a number of you placing wagers in the casino sports books and at the kiosks too! Again, sports betting is just the first step of several leading to an expanded gaming market here in Arizona. I’m excited to see what the future holds! Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK
WHY DON’T YOU PRINT CASINO NAMES? ...And Whose Side Are You On Anyway?
Hi, I have a simple question. Why do you always edit out the casino names in your Q & A section with complaints? Are you on the side of the casinos or on our side? Dave Edmund—Peoria, AZ Thanks for your great question. And, by the way, looking at our magazine from your perspective, we understand your concern as to what side we are on. However, please take a minute to evaluate our position. Our mission is to provide readers with information regarding casino games and the casino industry based on facts. We don’t print guesses, hunches, feelings, and bad information. Are we capable of mistakes? Sure, we’re human. But we don’t intentionally mislead, write articles based on BS, or create spin with “fake news.” You can go to plenty of so-called casino news sources and “casino/slot experts” all over the internet and get misinformation. But not here. And, please don’t get us started about video channels or social media “personalities.” Can you say: Fake, False, Unethical, and Liability, in the same sentence? So, based on our simple mission, with all the reader comments we receive about the casinos, we have to take them at face value. Many describe events which happened in the not so recent past and may have only happened in passing between two people. Furthermore, many pertain to situations a casino has no control over. For example, a reader complaint we received stated another patron accidentally spilled a drink on the reader “last week” and the patron did not apologize. The complaint then elaborates the casino the reader was at “only” apologized for the incident. First, if we believe the story to be true, how could we possibly be investigative journalists and confirm the story? Second, what can the casino do beyond apologize? Give out a steak dinner and dry clean clothes every time a drink is spilled? Third, this is a random incident that could also have happened in any shopping mall’s food court. This incident isn’t really all that significant and specific to casinos. So, even if we were to print it, how would it be fair to single out one casino? So, let’s examine a reader letter that is discussing the increasing noise levels in a specific casino. Well, this is definitely something which affects the casino industry in general. Sure, noise levels all around us are increasing, but it been really obvious in casinos. All of them. Again, how is it fair to discuss loud slots,
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2022 | azgamingguide.com
loud guests (screaming, fighting, cursing, hitting slots with fists and other objects, etc.), loud music, and loud announcements at one casino when so many of them now “pump up the volume?” And, one person’s “loud” is another person’s “fun.” Afterall, the hard rock band AC/DC didn’t make a name for themselves purely based on their catchy melodies, singalong choruses, and tongue-in-cheek lyrics! They’re loud. Really loud! Ultimately, regarding the issue of noise in casinos, you know where we stand. It’s getting beyond loud for our staff. We read the complaints about noise from readers. We hear patrons complaining about the intolerable noise levels to each other when we walk into a casino. This isn’t made up, it’s a real issue. But plenty of casinos are apparently following the logic “more is better” when it comes to volume and loudness. The only way to really get to the bottom of the issue would be to measure the decibel levels daily across several months in each casino across the state using a scientific study to “prove” which casino is “the loudest” based on the results. That we could print. But, that’s not really in alignment with our mission either. But back to taking a reader’s comment at face value. If we choose to print the casino's name along with it. Then, in all fairness, we have to reach out to the casino and get their side of the story. We can do that, but then we’d be a “Casino 60 Minutes” or “Casino 20/20” news outlet doing “Gotcha!” news. That’s not really our mission, presenting the “reader said, casino said,” narrative. And, it’s not much of a story if you only are able to provide half of the story when a casino chooses not to respond. We do know casino executives across many different departments read our magazine. So, they hear what our readers are saying. In fact, some of our articles have changed casino policies. One issue that really sticks out was regarding hand pay/ jackpot limits being set way too low and needing to be moved up to the taxable threshold for a variety of reasons. Most of those reasons benefitting the casino, and some benefitting the player. Several casinos immediately informed us they would be changing their rules based on our article. Hopefully this gives you some insight as to how and why we do what we do. You are the reason we started this magazine. And, we appreciate all of our loyal readers and fans, many of you from the very first issue in 2009. Keep your comments coming! Until next month, have fun and good luck! $

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann
OPTIMAL STRATEGY Yes, It Will Vary Based On The Video Poker Game You’re Playing!
A
ll of a sudden, in the past couple months, my inbox has been flooded with e-mail from readers proclaiming that it’s only necessary to learn the strategy for the video poker game Jacks or Better (JOB) because the same strategy can be applied to Double Double Bonus Poker (DDBP). What is that? Where is this crazy idea coming from? There are always some idiotic betting schemes or wildly wrong playing strategies popping up on the internet and this must be one of them! Although there are hands that are played exactly the same way in the two games, there are many, many hands that are played very differently. One of the main reasons why the optimal strategy varies between the two games is because JOB pays the same amount for every four-of-a-kind while DDBP has much higher pays for four-of-a-kinds. Another reason is because JOB pays twice your bet back with any two pair whereas DDBP only pays your bet back. Let’s assume you are playing both games with a 9/6 pay table where the full house pays 9 credits and the flush pays 6 credits at minimum bet. You wouldn’t play these video poker games with pay schedules less than this anyways, right? Here are a few difficult hands that involve Aces to test your video poker expertise. Q♦ 9♠ A♣ 8♥ 2♣ When playing JOB you hold both unsuited high cards, but when playing DDBP you only hold the Ace. Would you have known to do that? The reason you need to hold both high cards in JOB is because the two pair pays twice your bet back and there are no bonused four-of-a-kinds. In DDBP the four
Aces are the top paying four-of-a-kind, so you never hold another unsuited high card with an Ace. 7♠ T♣ A♣ A♥ 7♦ When playing JOB you hold both pairs, but when playing DDBP you only hold the pair of Aces. JOB will pay you twice your bet back automatically for holding the two pairs and you have a chance at the full house. You want to sacrifice the full house potential for the much greater win of four Aces when playing DDBP. A♥ A♠ A♣ 5♥ 5♣ When playing JOB you hold the dealt full house, but when playing DDBP you only hold the three Aces and you drop the two fives. Some of you may have a difficult time dropping a “sure thing,” but for as often as the fourth Ace shows up when you do make the sacrifice it is worth your while. 6♣ T♥ A♦ K♥ 3♣ When playing JOB you hold the King and the Ace, but when playing DDBP you drop everything and hold only the Ace. You’re still hoping for the pair, at the very least, when playing JOB. However, when playing DDBP, you’re always going to want to hold the Ace even when dealt a suited Queen and Ten or a suited King and Ten. 4♦ 2♣ A♣ 9♥ 5♠ This is a trick question! Here is a situation where you make the same exact play in both games. You only hold the Ace in both games! You weren’t seriously considering holding the inside straight were you? Keep the questions coming! Have fun playing video poker! $

WORKING IN ARIZONA GAMING Everything You Need To Know To Get Started
F
inding work in a local Arizona casino can be a wonderful experience. The casinos range from small properties with just a few hundred slot machines to the three largest employers (Gila River Gaming Enterprises, Casino Arizona/ Talking Stick Resort and Desert Diamond Casinos) with multiple properties, hotels, restaurants, slots, poker, and table games. Finding the right one for you should be more than a splitsecond decision. So do your homework and choose wisely. About Licensing When I first worked in Nevada casinos, I applied on a Tuesday, had my interview, and was hired on the spot. I was given paperwork to take to the local police station where I got fingerprinted, and I had to bring a money order for the FBI to do my background check. The detailed check took weeks, but I got a Sherriff’s card immediately and had my first paid orientation day on Friday. Yes. Things have changed. In Arizona, you must apply, get “approved” as a hire, fill out important background check documents, and be approved by both the casino’s Tribal Gaming Office and the Arizona Department of Gaming. Your background check will take time. You won’t work this week. Probably not this month. Your background paperwork will be different and easier to finish for job seekers beyond the gaming departments (poker, table games, bingo, keno, slots, and sportsbook). And working jobs in other departments can help when in-house gaming positions open! The Casinos in Arizona Without steering anyone towards a specific property for employment, 22 federally recognized tribes in Arizona are part of a Tribal-State gaming compact most recently updated and signed into law on April 15, 2021. That’s Tax Day, a bad day for most of us. My first day working in a casino was April Fool’s Day, but that’s probably not significant. Arizona’s latest compact authorized new table games, including Sic Bo, Baccarat, Pai Gow Tiles, Big Six, Craps, and Roulette. And (drum roll, please) a new maximum wager of $100,000 (up from $1,350). Each casino regulates its table limits, and the 100K number is sky high, but several properties have $2,500 limits every day now. On January 1st, 2022 there were about 550 card

and table games in the state and 18,000 slot machines. Arizona gaming is growing, and there are jobs! The addition of Craps and Roulette was long-awaited in Arizona and sparked a feeding frenzy to get qualified dealers and supervisors for the games. Starting wages rose for supervisors, and some properties have bumped up dealer pay based on how many games they deal. You may not have to know all the games to get hired, but it helps improve your chances! As for pay scales, starting Floor Supervisor and Pit Boss rates are higher in Arizona - at the casinos that have incorporated Craps and Roulette into their gaming mix - than in many comparable casinos in other states and even Las Vegas. And speaking from multiple employment experiences, Arizona casinos are much more relaxed and enjoyable. As for table game tips, most Arizona casinos are “go for your own” and not “split joints.” Your income depends on the number of players habitually visiting the casino, your shift, and personality. I know dealers who are happy grinding out $50,000 and others who quickly make twice that. It is a “go for your own” job! $

TIPPING YOUR BLACKJACK DEALER A $3,000 Tip Will Make Someone’s Day!
Y
ou may not know that blackjack dealers are part of the service industry, just like waiters and waitresses, plus so many other employees working jobs inside and outside of casinos. A lot of players don’t realize that blackjack dealers make minimum wage and depend on tips to boost their income. As a result, most dealers want the player to do well and are happy when you win. When to tip and how to tip seem to baffle most players. Experienced players will tell you that it’s a lot more fun to play with a happy dealer than a grumpy one so they tip early and often. The decision to tip or not to tip is ultimately up to you, and no one can make that decision for you. If you just lost all your money it’s hard to think about leaving a tip, but just remember the dealer is just dealing the cards. Tipping a dealer early in the game gets you favorable treatment later in the game. Dealers tend to remember a player’s name if they are a regular tipper and a regular customer. So how do you tip the dealer? There are several ways. After a hand has ended you can just hand the dealer a chip or chips and say, “This is for you.” That way there is no confusion as to whether you want change or to give the dealer a tip. Another way to tip is by making a bet for the dealer. You can do this by placing your bet in the betting circle, and then placing what you want to play for the dealer above your bet. If you win your bet the dealer also wins their bet. They are paid just like you. And, if you lose, the dealer picks up both bets. You can ask a dealer which way they like to be tipped, which usually puts them in a good mood knowing that they will receive some sort of gratitude for their service. When should you tip? Most players tip after winning a significant hand, or if you have been on a roll you can throw them something every so many hands. How much should you tip? I go by the dealer. Some really make the game fun and I throw them a little more than normal. It really depends how much you win. While there is no right or wrong amount, if you are playing with $5 chips, a $10 tip is
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2022 | azgamingguide.com
reasonable. If you play with $25 chips and have a nice run, then you should give them a $25 tip. I was playing at a table where a friend of mine was playing $25 a hand on the Lucky Ladies as well as $25 for the dealer on that bet. The Lucky Ladies (Drawing two Queens, both in Hearts) came up which paid over $3,000 for him and $3,000 for the dealer. The dealer immediately burst into tears because she was so happy. The point is these tips really can make someone’s day. It’s a real attitude changer and can make a cranky dealer more friendly. And, we all have more fun when everyone is smiling right? If you decide that card counting is for you and would like to take your game to the next level, I cover card counting in my new book. My system keeps track of all the cards as they are dealt, and has a betting and playing strategy according to the count. By playing this way you have a mathematical advantage over any casino. Then it will be you, not the house, who has the advantage when you sit down to play. Roll to Win Craps, a hybrid game, utilizes a 12-foot LED playing field and was designed with everyone in mind. Players can shoot live dice and see all of their information displayed on the screen, including their total chips. Roll to Win Craps is where technology and tradition collide. EZ BACCARAT: EZ to play. EZ to win. Now with $5,000 limits. EZ Baccarat is easy to learn and easy to play! Think of it as a smaller version of Baccarat. It’s played on a smaller table that accommodates

up to seven players and one dealer. The object of EZ Baccarat is like Baccarat – using two or three cards, the "Player" competes against the "Banker" for a hand closest to 9. There are three possible outcomes. The “Player” wins, the “Banker” wins or it’s a tie. A winning hand will be paid according to the posted odds. EZ Baccarat also features two optional wagers, Dragon 7™️ and Panda 8™️. There is one betting spot per position for Dragon 7 and one betting spot per position for Panda 8. A Dragon 7 bet pays 40 to 1—if the banker’s hand wins with a three-card total of 7 points. The Panda 8 pays 25 to 1—if the player’s hand wins with a three-card total of 8 points. SUPERSTITIONS & RITUALS PART II Readers Explain What They Do & Why
I
t’s well-known that professional athletes are an extremely superstitious bunch. Many don’t feel lucky before a big competition unless they’ve performed certain rituals. Well, us gamblers have our very own good luck (and bad luck) charms and superstitions too! As soon as my column in March’s issue, Superstitions & Rituals, went live online and in print, my inbox was flooded with emails from our fans. I have enjoyed reading each and every one of them very much. Thank you to all who wrote in! Below are just some of the many comments I received. Do they ring a bell with any of you? I know some of them do with me! Phil S. I have two rituals I use whenever I am at a casino.
don’t park in the same place anymore and I definitely don’t use the same doors. That’s my way of changing my luck around for the better.
The first ritual is I always play Max Bet on the very first spin. It's a low percentage win spin just like any other, but on the occasions that it does pay, it is usually very good and it's even better if it puts me in a bonus.
Candy C. I love going to the casino when it’s a full moon. I’m always lucky during a full moon. I’ve gotten tax slips at exactly the moment the moon is full, down to the minute!
The second ritual is when I go to a bank of 6 or 8 of the same machine. I always walk around feeling the back of each chair. I pick the one that is the warmest and that's the one I play. It's no guarantee of success, but I feel it is the slot most likely to pay.
Mara S. I’m always lucky when I buy myself a new purse or the casino gives me a purse. When I take it with me to gamble, I always win. Then, I keep some of my winnings in a pocket in my purse to bring me luck the next time.
Who says gambling isn't a mental activity?
Liz M. I have tons of little good luck charms (a pig, an elephant, a silver coin, a roadrunner, just to name a few) that travel with me on my casino adventures. I don’t have a purse filled with them. I take only one at a time. Lol!
Sid L. I cannot say that I have any good luck charms, more like one superstition and one bad luck charm! My superstition is for when I play Blackjack. I never sit at first base as I can’t get comfortable having all those cards played after I’ve played my hand. My bad luck charm is my Aunt Susan. One night, playing Blackjack at the Four Queens in Las Vegas, I was doing quite well. That is, until my Aunt came walking up behind me and watched a few hands. I proceeded to lose the next five hands until she walked away. From that day on she stays away from any table I'm playing, even though I have pretty much quit playing Blackjack and "only" play Pai Gow Poker. Tom W. I always wear my lucky baseball hat to the casino. Ok, I may not win every time I wear it, but I win more than I lose when I have it on that’s for sure. And, I can’t remember a time I actually won when I left it at home. So, the hat’s coming with me. It’s old, used to be black but now it’s gray, but I don’t care. Arlene D. I always try to park in the same parking space, or in the same general area, and I go through the same entrance. As soon as my luck goes from good to bad, I
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | April 2022 | azgamingguide.com
David S. I never play at the same machine after I’ve won something. Let’s say I win on Lightning Link during one trip, on my next trip I’ll play Buffalo. I will not play Lightning Link! I’ve been burned so many times that I’ve learned not to do it anymore. I’ll play Lightning Link again, just not the very next trip. George A. I psyche myself up before every trip to the casino. I tell myself I’m lucky, I feel lucky and I’m going to be lucky. When I walk through the doors at the casino I say I’m going to make the casino wish I didn’t come today. Jenna T. I have one particular perfume that I wear to the casino. When I smell it, it always makes me feel happy. And, when I’m feeling happy I feel like I’m going to be lucky!
Do you have any superstitions or rituals before, during or after your casino visits? I’d love to hear about them! Write me at Sami@azgamingguide.com and let me know about your good luck charms. $

A couple, who were childhood sweethearts, had married and lived in the same neighborhood where they grew up. Because it was close to their 50th wedding anniversary, the couple decided to visit their old school. After a half hour reminiscing, the couple left to walk home. Suddenly a bag of money fell out of a speeding armored car, landing at their feet. “Let’s take it home and then contact the authorities,” the wife said. At home, she counted the money: there was 5 million dollars in the bag! “We've got to turn it in,” said the husband. “Finders keepers,” said the wife greedily, heading to the attic to hide the money. The next day, two FBI agents showed up at their door. “Excuse me, we are going through the neighborhood after the robbery. Did either of you find any money that fell out of an armored car yesterday?” “No,” the wife said quickly. “She’s lying!” the husband interjected. “Don’t believe him, he’s getting senile,” the wife retorted. “Sir, start from the beginning,” one agent said. “Well,” the husband began, “when we were walking home from school yesterday…” The FBI agents looked at each other and said, “I think we’re done here. We’ll move on to the next house.”
