How High Will Gaming Revenue Go?
VOLUME 14 • ISSUE 05 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com
O
ne of the main reasons we publish our magazine every month is to provide our readers with some accurate background about important news in the casino gaming industry.
Unfortunately, what the general population is exposed to when television, radio, magazine and newspapers, and above all the internet and social media decide to relay information about casinos, slots, etc. is wildly inaccurate and oversimplified at best (I’m trying really hard to be nice here!). So, here’s a little tidbit of information that might be hard to wrap your brain around. It was for me! In 2019, Commercial Gaming Revenue was at an alltime high of $44 billion. Then COVID-19 happened and many casinos closed for a month and a half or more. Obviously 2020 wasn't a record-breaking year. Although, I have a feeling, if someone were to calculate the proportional revenue across 2020, it might match or beat 2019. Anyway, the true jaw dropper is the Commercial Gaming Revenue in 2021 was up by another 21% from 2019 at $53 billion! And, that doesn't include Tribal Gaming Revenue, which is more difficult to track as not all tribes across the country are required to share publicly the same level of information about gaming revenues as their commercial counterparts. What will certainly boost Commercial Gaming Revenue numbers in the future is the news Chicago is zeroing in on their candidate for their sole commercial gaming license. As of the beginning of April, Bally’s Corporation with their $1.74 billion proposal, Hard Rock with their $1.74 billion proposal, and Rivers 78 with their $1.62 billion proposal are still vying for the license. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK
WATCHING SOMEONE LOSE ONLINE Why Would Gamblers Be Interested?
Hello Experts! I’m a longtime reader and I’ve never written in before. Over the years, you’ve answered a lot of my questions because others have asked them too. But, I’m curious to know what you think about this question. One of my friends, who doesn’t gamble, told me they watched a slot video where the person played one game after another, live, and in less than one hour, they lost over $20,000! Why would anyone, much less a gambler, watch a YouTube or Social Media video of gambling? My friend couldn’t give me an answer, they just thought it was funny. Regardless of if they win or lose in the video, who cares? James Hill—Mesa, AZ
claim for damages against the video’s producer. As a company, and players, we don’t want our likeness, voices, appearance associated with a time and place, or other copyrighted material we own, used without consent or remuneration. I would think others would feel similarly. Especially the casino at which that $20,000 loss happened! Personally we wouldn’t want to step foot in that casino. Their slots are, obviously, “tight!” Isn’t that the basic impression? All players can do there is lose, right? Why would you play at a casino where you can lose $20,000 in one hour? Why would a casino want to participate or, since we’re sure the video is still out there on the internet, advertise that? On the other hand, showing winning all the time is just BS too. See point one above.
Hi James! Thanks for your great question. We have the same question too! Why watch someone gamble in a video? You can watch people win and lose, live, in person, all day long! Sorry, it’s true! As you know from previous articles, we have many issues with internet slot videos.
6. With video posters that purport to show big wins, bigger wins, even bigger wins, and so on, they are truly playing with fire. Unless the videos are faked (and there are a variety of ways to achieve this with just a small amount of production costs and time), the video producer has to start putting more and more money in play on higher and higher denomination slots in order to achieve the next “Massive Win—Click Here!” video. Which again, leads us to points one, two, and three.
Here are our concerns: 1. They aren’t real. They are subject to editing. The individuals recording them can pick and choose which gambling sessions (or parts of them) to post. Unless they do them live. But it sounds like that’s when things went wrong. $20,000 worth of wrong! Isn’t that telling! 2. They are misleading because they never show the entire picture of the gambling experience. Gambling is for entertainment purposes and players should always have a fixed bankroll that is set aside for gambling. Even videos that attempt to show the entire experience have extreme difficulty satisfying the first point above. 3. Unless a viewer has access to the video producer’s Win/Loss statements from all their gambling activities across the year, and their tax returns to examine exactly where all the money is coming from to fund the videos, these videos and the people behind them are all full of BS. 4. These video producers don’t know what they are talking about. Since they didn’t design the slot themselves, their videos are riddled with incorrect and misleading information. Disregard any comments they make about the slots, casinos, the industry, etc.
7. Just like all the “reality” TV series out there, either the program is showing (truthfully or not) something most individuals don’t want to or can’t do, or it’s showing escapism. That is, either watch a BASE jumper, or look at what these people are up to with their problems and I’m glad I’m not them because all I can do is laugh at them. We won’t bring any show names into the discussion, but you can distinguish between the two categories! Internet slot videos and their audiences are no different. 8. Some people enjoy watching other people. Literally. They are interested in hair, nails, makeup, clothes, attitude, behavior, drama, etc. And watchers aren't gamblers. It’s this whole other thing that we can’t relate to when it comes to gambling. Sure, we’ve seen other people win. Sure, we’ve watched someone in a bonus. But it’s never for more than a minute. That’s someone else’s experience. It doesn't do anything for us. Are they sharing their “win” with us? Nope! Plus, you don’t know their story. Are they up or down overall? Are they leaving in five minutes, never to return? Will you get the whole truth out of them? Nope! See point number three.
5. These videos are being shot without the consent of the casinos, the slot manufacturers (those slots, their math models, their graphics, and music are copyrighted, i.e. Wheel Of Fortune Slots, just like the movie Star Wars or the TV series Friends or the latest album by The Rolling Stones), and other patrons. Can you say “lawsuit?” Honestly, we’re not sure why this hasn’t happened publicly yet. We have heard of several lawsuits being settled out of court over internet slot videos. But still, when will someone, or a company, file a lawsuit (maybe a class action) against the video producers and the websites that keep the videos visible?
9. These videos are posted in order to generate revenue. Every view of an ad or a click-through gives the poster money for no reason other than to take advantage of your time. Why participate in that?
In our opinion, the casino, the slot manufacturer (and any copyrighted material they are using or own), brand licensors, and patrons all have a
Thanks for all the questions, we love hearing from you. Until next month, stay safe, have fun and good luck! $
06 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2022 | azgamingguide.com
10. We’ll just put this out there too...At what point does the video producer exhibit or encourage problem gambling behavior? James, our advice is to stop watching. Encourage others to stop watching. These videos aren't worth anybody’s time.

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann
1 VS. 5 CREDIT PLAY? What Players Need To Consider
M
ost discussions on video poker include the advice to always play the 5 credit max bet as opposed to 1 through 4 credits to take advantage of the higher paying Royal Flush. As a player you gain a little bit of expected value and decrease the house edge. If you are fortunate to play a full pay machine, playing the 5 credit max bet can place your long run payback percentage at over 100%! However, sometimes your bankroll doesn't always allow you to play at max bet all the time. So, what do you do now? If you are used to playing quarters at a max bet of $1.25, should you switch to nickels where the max bet is now only $0.25? The answer is: it depends on the game. If the pay table is the same, you should absolutely switch down to the nickel game. Most of you know that nickel games don’t have the same pay table as the quarter games, so by switching down in denomination you are probably hurting your long run payback percentage. More and more, you’re probably finding identical pay tables for different denominations of video poker; most of them nowhere close to where they used to be just a few years ago. Here is some advice to be aware of when considering your options with Jacks or Better. Playing 1 credit on a 9/6 Jacks or Better game reduces your payback percentage by about 1.5% in comparison to 5 credits. If you switch to a Jacks or Better nickel game (generally at 8/5), you suffer a 2.23% loss on the payback percentage because of the re-
duced pays. Not to mention the adverse effect on your bankroll and play session length. If you stay at the 9/6 quarter game and play 1 credit, you are up by about 0.73%. Now you are hoping NOT to hit that royal flush! The situation is even worse with Deuces Wild pay tables! If we play a full pay game at about 100.6% long term payback which pays 25 credits for the four-of-a-kind at max bet, we tend to feel good about ourselves. If we play one credit, the game is reduced by about 1.18%. Yet playing a poorer pay table, where the four-of-a-kind pays 20 credits, on a lower denomination game, even at max bet, costs you about 6% in the long term payback percentage. Overall, you lose around 4.8%! Don’t despair, you can still find some silver lining in the clouds if you are careful. Comparing 8/5, 7/5, and 6/5 Jacks or Better pay tables, you lose around 0.8% switching between 8/5 at one credit and 6/5 at max credits. The same scenario with 8/5 and 7/5 gains you 0.35% payback percentage! If you are just out to have fun, or you are out with a friend who just wants to have fun, don’t let all these numbers bother you. Play some video poker and have fun! If you really are trying to conserve your bankroll, you need to place your bets carefully if you are switching between denominations and the pay tables are changing. Have fun playing video poker! $

WHO’S WINNING IN ARIZONA CASINOS? Noise And Excitement Create Interest!
W
andering your favorite casino, you might see blackjack players wagering thousands of dollars saying nothing as their blackjack hand of twenty gets whacked by a dealer five-card 21, and sports bettors with fivedollar tickets on a football game cheering wildly when their team’s quarterback throws a touchdown pass - in the first quarter! That’s quite a difference, but things change. Back when slot machines paid out in actual coins, some casinos had rounded bowls the coins fell into that offered acoustic advantages (noise) when the machines paid off. And some casinos paid “starters” to sit with a bucket of coins at the dollar slots and whoop and holler every time their machine paid anything. Noise and excitement create interest. The best thing about casinos is they are a great escape. And casino enthusiasts say they have more fun playing blackjack and roulette than playing lottery scratchers. You can’t win millions, but you’ll win more often, and you win when you have fun. Roulette and Craps in Arizona We are lucky enough now to have live roulette and craps in Arizona, and you don’t have to be quiet about it. Although roulette may have originated in Europe, where only the rich quietly played the wheel while dressed to the nines, you can have fun and cheer in Arizona. However, the most noise you’ll ever hear in a casino (except during the Super Bowl) is at the craps game! Craps players love to root for numbers. On the first roll, it’s seven come eleven! Afterward, you might be screaming for the Hardways or a second-roll eleven, but there’s no confusing a dice game with a poker game. The game of craps takes a crew to run, with a boxman watching and three dealers, so the limits may be a bit higher than you are used to in Arizona for a table game. But even if the Pass Line wager is $15 minimum or $25, the proposition wagers (like the hardways and horn bets) are available for less. And, a craps game is different than every other table game. At craps, when you bet the Pass line, Come, Buy, Place, and even the Hardways, your wager can last a long time. Your Pass line wager stays in action until a craps number (2, 3, 12) is rolled
16 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2022 | azgamingguide.com
on a come-out roll, or the shooter rolls seven after establishing a point of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. It could be one roll, or it could be 50. It’s a fantastic game. And, it’s the only game where you are encouraged to shout out your numbers and cheer when you want. Does the cheering help? I’m not sure. But Harold Smith, Sr., thought so. Editor’s Note: According to Wikipedia.org, Harold's Club casino was established in 1935 by Harold S. Smith Sr. (1910-1985) and his brother, Raymond A. Smith. Soon afterwards, their father, Raymond I. ("Pappy") Smith (1887-1967), was appointed general manager and became the public face of the casino. The casino expanded by buying adjacent Virginia Street properties. Harold's Club constructed a seven-story building as part of the casino, but never had a hotel on the property. Pappy Smith developed a marketing campaign that made the casino famous, using more than two thousand billboards across the United States advertising "Harold's Club or Bust", often written on a Conestoga wagon. Harold Smith Sr. strongly believed in a carnival-style atmosphere in his casino. $

SHOULD YOU PLAY AT A FULL TABLE? Examining All The Pros And Cons
F
irst of all, let me debunk the myth that the actions of the other players at a table determine whether you are going to win or lose. The players that subscribe to this theory usually play marginal basic strategy at best. After the hand is over these players will then point out that if a player wouldn't have done this we would have all won, or will take credit for everyone winning the hand since they took the dealer’s 5 that would have given them 21. The truth is that you tend to remember the hand that the player took the dealer’s bust card on that caused everyone to lose, and forget when a stupid play caused you to win. In the long run the way the other players play their hand has no effect on your long term results. They help you just as much as they hurt you, so it all balances out. If you are new to the game of blackjack, a full table can be helpful because it slows the game down, and gives you more time to make the correct play for your given hand. Typically you will play about 50 to 60 hands per hour at a full table. If you are playing perfect basic strategy the casino has a long term advantage over you and this means that you will lose less money per hour at a full table. If you are not playing perfect basic strategy when you play blackjack you are giving more of your money away. For example, if you stand on 12 against a dealer’s up card of 2, you will lose 29.3% of all the money you bet in that situation. If your average bet is $10 it costs you $2.93 to stand. By hitting, you reduce your loss by $0.40 or $2.53 per hand. If you play just 4 hours a week, the amount you donate in this situation may surprise you. Over a year’s time you will play about 12,000 hands, and you will see 12 vs. a 2 about 75 times. Standing instead of hitting your 12 vs. a dealer up card of 2 over a year’s time adds up to $30 a year. Do you really want to give your favorite casino $30 more a year? Do you think they need an extra $30? If you're scared of busting or “taking the dealer's bust card,” you're giving the casino a gift each and every time you stand. This is only one example of what it costs you to misplay a hand. Each time that you deviate from basic strategy you are giving more of your money to the casino. How much? The chart below
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2022 | azgamingguide.com
will demonstrate the amount you give to the casino by misplaying your hand. This chart is based on 4 hours of play per week, and an average bet size of $10. WRONG Stand with 12 vs. 3 Stand with A-7 vs. 9 Hit 11 vs. 10 Stand A-7 vs. 3,4,5,6 Stand A-6 vs. 7 Double 9 vs. 7 Stand 16 vs. 7 Stand 16 vs. 10
CORRECT Hit Hit Double Double Hit Hit Hit Hit
COST OF WRONG PLAY $10.20 a year $9.28 a year $99.00 a year $32.89 a year $21.89 a year $19.44 a year $37.00 a year $12.09 a year
Keep in mind that this is only a partial list of misplayed hands. Can you imagine the amount that is needlessly given away by a "hunch" player? These are also the players that complain that they never win and don't know why. Well now they know. Hopefully this chart is a wake up call to those of you that know basic strategy, but play hunches and gut feelings some of the time. The difference between a player who makes money at blackjack, and those who don't is simple. The perfect basic strategy player will double on 11 against a dealer’s 10 twelve times in a row and lose all twelve, but on the thirteenth time he will do it again, because he has complete faith in basic strategy. Hunches and intuition have no place in the game of blackjack. If you decide that card counting is for you and would like to take your game to the next level, I cover card counting in my new book. My system keeps track of all the cards as they are dealt, and has a betting and playing strategy according to the count. By playing this way you have a mathematical advantage over any casino. Then it will be you, not the house, who has the advantage when you sit down to play. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
I DON’T LIKE POOLED TIPPING! A Reader Has Something To Say About Poor Quality Customer Service
R
ecently I received an email from a reader who had two gripes to communicate. I really thought we should print both of them, but as is always the case, I need more room! I’ll have to print the second gripe in an upcoming issue. Stay tuned for that, but enjoy the first one now! I have a few slot attendants that I have known for years that always greet me and check on me throughout my time playing. When I do win a hand pay, I always give a tip of $10 or more. But realizing that tips are shared with others in a 24hour shift, there are some slot attendants that I just don't care for. Their attitudes are not like the ones who are really nice and I don't feel like giving a tip that they are not entitled to. Can't the casino have boxes that each attendant can put their own tips into instead of everyone sharing? This just might make the grumpy ones get a better attitude! Sharon Saltzman—Arizona—via email Sharon, thanks for sharing your story. I also have a difficult time at casinos where tips are pooled for slot attendants. I know a wide variety of slot attendants at Arizona’s casinos and beyond the borders of the state. And, you are correct, the variety includes customer service that is great, average and bad. The best slot attendants smile, are welcoming and friendly, try to connect with me, are fast and accurate, and give off a “happy vibe” regardless of what day it is, how busy the casino is, or how much longer their shift is. That’s true customer service, and it’s hard to coach, train, and bring out in some people. The worst slot attendants don’t smile, recite their “Welcome to Lucky 777 Casino” corporate speech as if they would rather walk across 10 yards of broken glass, are slow and make mistakes, and give off the Eeyore vibe (“We can’t all, and some of us don’t.”) regardless of what day it is, how busy the casino is, or how much longer their shift is, unless it’s their last 30 minutes. When I asked one slot attendant I know how she manages to always be so chipper and positive whenever I see her, she replied, “You are here to have fun! Regardless of what’s going on with me, you are here for entertainment. You are not here to listen to my problems, or feel like I’m having a bad day.” Very well said and is really good advice for all slot attendants!
36 Arizona Gaming Guide | May 2022 | azgamingguide.com
Regardless of the slot attendant, I always tip. It’s a karma thing with me. But, I’ll tip more to slot attendants who are doing a great job, regardless of how tips are treated. What I do make sure to say to those slot attendants is how great a job they are doing in comparison to other slot attendants. Whether the comparison is inside the casino or with other casinos. And, I’ll go out of my way to speak with the Slot Shift Supervisor or the Casino Shift Manager and tell them what a fantastic employee they have working at the casino. If that’s not your style, comment cards are a great way to “tip” your favorite employees without tipping the entire group of slot attendants. Contrary to popular myth, not all comment cards are disposed of in the circular filing cabinet. I’m sure someone in casino management enjoys reading the “happy” and complimentary comments more than they do the bad ones. And, actually acts on it. If you have to criticize, make ample use of the criticism sandwich that corporate types can relate to best. First, compliment (that’s the top slice of bread), then criticize (that’s the meat), then compliment again, repeating the first compliment if needed (that’s the bottom slice of bread). Sometimes I’ll reverse the order (criticize, compliment, repeat the criticism), just for fun! I love to hear your stories, good and bad. Write me at Sami@azgamingguide.com and good luck!. $

If you want to know what a man is truly like, put him in a position of authority.—Anonymous Quote Don’t ever take a fence down unless you know the reason it was put up in the first place.—Anonymous Quote Two men walked into a diner that looked as though it had seen better days. Before sitting down in the booth, the younger man brushed crumbs off the seat. Then he took some napkins and wiped some ketchup off the table. The waitress came over and asked if they wanted menus. “No thanks,” said the older man. “I’ll just have a cup of black coffee.” “I’ll have a black coffee too,” the younger man said. Then he added snippily, “And make sure the cup is clean.” The waitress shot him a nasty look before marching off into the kitchen. “Two cups of black coffee,” she announced curtly, two minutes later when she came back. Then she said, “Which one of you wanted the clean cup?”
