SELF-CONFIDENCE As In Assurance, Not Egotism
Your Authority On Everything Gaming VOLUME 14 • ISSUE 08 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com
L
ately I’ve been feeling off. I think the pandemic got to me. The lockdown, the masks, the fear, the polarization, the bad information, and so on. It really wore on me, like for so many others. This, in turn, affected everything else in my life, including my experiences at the casinos. Can you say bankroll decimation? Well, not all the time, but there were enough repeat episodes to indicate a pattern that was not indicative of my experiences pre-pandemic. Just the other week, I felt like my bankroll blues had gone away. And it had everything to do with what I was feeling on the inside. Self-confidence. It’s a really good thing as long as it isn’t propped up by egotism, or worse yet, narcissism in people. For me, self-confidence is a warm, glowing, fuzzy feeling that is mainly a strengthening feeling. It’s knowing I can achieve anything if I just exercise my mind a little and put in the work. It’s knowing everything is going to be all right, no matter what is thrown at me. Perhaps I’ve turned a corner and can shake off all of these negative feelings that have been plaguing me more and more beginning in March of 2020. I’ll be glad to get rid of them. If you have any negativity in your life, I encourage you towards shaking it off as well. Life is too short. Have A Lucky Month!

PLAYERS TALK
THE CASINOS ARE ALL IN IT TOGETHER! While The Staff Could Disagree With This, It’s Tough To Not Agree
I’ve been reading your articles for years now and I remember you said the casinos in Arizona are all separate and different and aren't owned by the same people. Why is it they all offer the same gifts every month? I get a flyer from [a casino] that is giving away a purse every week in December. As if my wife needs more purses. The very next month [a second casino I visit] sends me the same purses in January. Then [a third casino I play at] is offering me the same set of purses in March. And it’s not just purses. Tools, kitchen stuff, you name it. If the casinos are all giving away the same gifts, sometimes in the same month, how are they not all working together and how are they not just all the same? This just shows it really doesn’t matter where you play. Harold C.—Via letter, Gilbert, Arizona Your letter is fantastic Harold! Of course casino customers are going to look at seeing the same gifts from different casinos as the casinos being in cahoots. We totally agree and understand why you would come to this very reasonable conclusion. Turn this around to the fast food industry. How would customers at the big hamburger outlets feel if the latest superhero movie swag was available across the board? All of a sudden the individual outlets are less individual, perhaps? Or, that latest and greatest movie just isn’t as cool when everyone is trying to associate themselves with it. We get you. If you just picked up some purses at one casino in December, why would you go to another casino to pick up those same purses the next month? Even if the purses are slightly different, won’t you be a little burned out on purses? Better yet, two casinos offering the same purse set the same month! Now what is a customer to do?
The same cream colored purse set (in black & white) during the same month at different Arizona casinos.
For example, more and more casinos are adopting the self-serve kiosks by installing them across the casino floor to minimize lines at the players club. Have you noticed how those kiosks all look and feel very similar? While the images may be different, the layout, capabilities, and so on are all essentially the same. That’s because casino equipment manufacturer Everi makes those kiosks and is essentially the only company in the casino gaming industry doing so. Just go to Everi.com/loyalty and check it out for yourself. While you are there, visit Everi.com/fintech and see if any of those products ring a bell as you wander from one casino to the next. Of course, casinos having “the same slots to play” is another example which could be used to explain “all casinos are the same.” But, there are a lot of slot manufacturers. Everi is the only company cranking out the kiosks, and plenty of slots too. Which only illustrates the point we are attempting to make. When there is only one supplier of a resource to a set of companies, the impression to customers is “you guys are all the same.”
There is one big benefit to all of the bland similarity in available gifts across the casinos. Let’s say something comes up that interferes with you picking up one part of December’s gift set. You can pick it up next month at the other casino!
When it comes to the monthly gifts the casinos are giving away, there is also only one main supplier. There may be some smaller outfits still trying to compete against the one 500 pound gorilla, but we think the casinos have just caved in to convenience and are pretty much all using the same company. Make sure to check out ImagineThis.com. And, we’re sure what you see on the splash page at Catalog.ImagineThis.com will look extremely familiar. Unfortunately you need to be a customer to see more, but you’ll get the picture.
But, just to give you some background. The casino gaming industry is quite insular to the point of being sequestered at times and in certain areas. Many casinos, although independent, use the same vendors to perform certain services for them.
Thank you to all our readers and fans for your questions and comments. We appreciate you! Write us at Editor, AZ Gaming Guide, PO BOX 20636, Mesa, AZ, 85277 or you can email us at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com. Have Fun & Good Luck! $

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann
HOW DO YOU PLAY THIS HAND? It Depends On The Game
A
nytime I visit a casino there are always people playing video poker making some pretty questionable decisions on what cards to hold. So, I’d like to offer a tip on how to play the two hands below based on different games. I hope my advice helps you improve your play! THE FIRST HAND A♦ K♦ Q♥ 7♣ 2♠ I just saw someone play this hand holding the Ace and Queen. This is the worst possible play to make besides holding the Seven and Two! I’ve seen this hold so many times I’m beginning to wonder if there’s some “new” strategy on the internet insisting you can win this way. Holding Ace-Queen in this situation just hands more money over to the casinos! Why would you do that? JACKS OR BETTER The best play is to hold the Ace and the King for an expected return (ER) of 0.577. The next best hold is the King and Queen for an ER of 0.483. The third place hold is the Ace and Queen for an ER of 0.468. DOUBLE DOUBLE BONUS Again, the best play is to hold the Ace and the King. The Ace-Queen hold is now in fourth place as holding just the Ace produces a slightly better ER. TRIPLE DOUBLE BONUS The Ace-Queen hold is now in fifth place! The best play is to hold the Ace and the King. The next best holds, in order, are the Ace, King-Queen, then the three high cards. DEUCES WILD Hold the Deuce! If you can’t just hold the Deuce (ER of 1.039), then hold for the Royal in diamonds for an ER of 1.029.
THE SECOND HAND K♦ K♥ Q♦ J♦ 2♠ To hold the Kings or go for the Royal? That is the question. I’m sure you’ve argued this one too with your friends, inside and outside the casino. Please, take a look below to see what you should hold and why, depending on the game. JACKS OR BETTER Hold the Kings (ER of 1.537)! Holding for the Royal is the second best choice with a 3.19% reduction in ER of 1.488. DOUBLE DOUBLE BONUS Hold for the Royal! It’s really close, but the ER is 1.469 and for the Pair of Kings it’s only 1.446 for a 1.57% reduction. The main reason is the reduced pay for the Two Pair win in Double Double. TRIPLE DOUBLE BONUS Hold for the Royal! Now the gap in ER is bigger because the Three of a Kind pay was also reduced for Triple Double. 1.502 for the Royal and only 1.337 for the Pair of Kings. That’s a difference of 10.97%! DEUCES WILD Hold the Deuce with the suited high cards to draw for the Wild Royal Flush! No other hold even comes close when you look at ER. Please send us an email if you want to know the answer to some confusing holds! Doesn't matter if it’s holds you are seeing other people make, or if you just want to be sure about your own holds. Hey, it’s all about playing as close to optimal strategy as you can! Write us at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com, or send a letter to: Editor, AZ Gaming Guide, PO BOX 20636, Mesa, AZ, 85277. $

HIGH PAYOFF PROGRESSIVE GAMES The Inside Scoop On Super 4 & Blazing 7s
P
layers flocked to Let It Ride and Caribbean Stud when the games were introduced because they featured massive progressive payoffs. If you wander around a casino in Arizona, you’ll see many six-figure progressive jackpots. Blackjack side wagers usually have smaller jackpots, but things are changing. HOW TO PLAY SUPER 4 PROGRESSIVE BLACKJACK The Stax Super 4 Progressive jackpot currently offers Arizona's largest blackjack side bet payoff at over $250,000 in several casinos. That’s a mound of cash for any table game, so let’s explain the rules. It’s played on a standard blackjack table with an optional progressive wager of $5. The big difference is the progressive sign on the table featuring five different jackpots, growing with each new bet. When all players have their blackjack bets placed and those who want to try the $5 Super 4 Progressive wager get their chips down, it’s blackjack time. The dealer and each player get their standard two cards. You won’t mind as much, however, if you see the dealer with an ace up or getting a blackjack – if you bet the progressive. When the dealer doesn’t have an ace up or blackjack, the side bet loses, and life goes on. Should the dealer have an ace showing but no blackjack, progressive wagers win $10, and the blackjack hand continues. If the dealer does have a blackjack, then their two cards and your two cards make a four-card poker hand with payoffs from $25 to the top progressive. Only the highest payout is made per player. PAYOUTS FOR DEALER BLACKJACK Dealer Blackjack pays $25 Any Pair pays $50 Four Cards of the Same Color (Red or Black) pays $100 Two Pair pays $200 Flush pays $250 5th Progressive – Must hit by X amount 4th Progressive – 4-card straight 3rd Progressive – 3 of a kind (trips) 2nd Progressive – Royal flush in spades, hearts, or clubs 1st Progressive – Royal flush in diamonds Royal flushes are four cards and always Ace-King-Queen-Jack.
16 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2022 | azgamingguide.com
BLAZING 7S PROGRESSIVE Another blackjack game seeing some five-figure progressives right now is Blazing 7s. Like Super 4, it’s found on a standard blackjack game with an optional progressive bet. And in this one, you don’t have to root for a dealer blackjack to win the progressive. Make your standard blackjack bet, choose the progressive 7-7-7 side bet, and your progressive circle will light up – the dealer will take the bet away. Then, enjoy that there are lots of sevens in the shoe, and you’ll get at least one 14.2% of the time. All payoffs are based on the player’s first two cards. You won't get a payoff if you don’t get at least one seven. If you are dealt two 7s, your payoff increases, and there’s a chance for the top payouts if the dealer’s up card is also a 7. All Blazing 7s payouts are made before drawing additional cards and finishing the regular blackjack hand. Progressive payoffs depend on the casino, but the most popular follows. PAYOUTS FOR BLAZING 7S PROGRESSIVE 2 to 1 – one 7 in your first two cards 25 to 1 – both first cards are 7s 200 to 1 – both first cards are 7s, and the dealer up card is a 7 Minor Jackpot – three 7s – all the same color Major Jackpot – three suited 7s Mega Jackpot – three diamond 7s $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. He is also the proud father of four beautiful girls.

STREAKS How To Ride Out The Good Ones And Let Go Of The Bad Ones
A
nyone, I think, who has played blackjack will agree it’s a very streaky game. But what is normal and what is streaky? If a dealer draws a five to their sixteen five hands in a row, would you consider that a streak? Would it surprise you that the dealer is just as likely to do it a sixth time in a row as a dealer who busts on sixteen for several hands in a row? You will often hear players talk about the “long run.” What is the “long run?” Well, there is no real answer, but the longer you play, the closer you will get to it. For example, if you play 10,000 hands of blackjack betting the same amount every time, and play perfect basic strategy, the probability is 90% that you end up within 192 units of what you started with minus the house edge. Here’s how I use streaks. If I lose four hands in a row, I change tables. If, over the course of my playing session I get ahead, I set that as my win/loss point. In other words, if my session starts to go the other way, (I’m losing) once I hit this point I cash out with a profit. If my session keeps going well (I’m winning) I will reset my win/loss point as I win more. By doing this, if you have a real good run of the cards you walk at the peak when the streak goes the other way. I have witnessed, firsthand, countless times when players win large amounts of chips, when things were going their way, only to watch them lose it all when the streak goes the other way. If they would have just set their win/loss point while they still had a profit, they could have walked away winners instead of going into the negative. The key to showing a profit in blackjack month after month is to set your win/loss point whenever you get ahead and stick to it, even though it may be small. I know there are many of you who are saying to yourself, as you are walking to your car, “I should have quit while I was ahead.” Sometimes, when you’re playing blackjack, you are never ahead
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2022 | azgamingguide.com
and that's just one of those unlucky streaks. When that happens to me, I just tell myself it’s not my day and come back another time. Those days when you’re losing seem like the bad luck streak will never end, so you should keep your loss small. However, if you are ahead in your playing session, that's when you set your win/loss point. Even if it’s only $50. Sometimes that's as good as you can do for that session. Don’t get greedy After all, a $50 profit is better than a $200 loss! Here is a great tip to fine tune your basic strategy play. In blackjack games of four decks or more, it is more profitable to stand on a three card sixteen against a dealer up card of a ten, than it is to hit. For example, if your hand is made up of a ten, a two and a four and the dealer shows a ten, stand. The expected return for a three card sixteen against a dealer ten when you hit is -0.540355. The expected return for a three card sixteen vs a dealer ten when you stand is -0.540293. $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 25 years. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE COINS? I Think Dollars Only Or Cashless Is The Way To Go
A
cross the past few years I’ve fielded more and more emails and letters from our readers about the lack of coins in casinos. At first, I thought it was no big deal. There was only one or two casinos in the entire state not doing coins anymore. Now, post-pandemic (and the great coin shortage of 2020, really?), I’ve formed a different opinion. Times have changed and we all need to accept it and move on. Progress, right? The first casino in Arizona to go completely coinless was here in the Phoenix Metro Area. Years ago. Their ticket redemption kiosks pay you in bills and then print out a ticket for the balance of the amount in cents. That ticket can be redeemed at the cage. And, most importantly, the slot attendants now round up to the nearest dollar when a game on their floor locks up for a hand pay or a taxable win. Now that’s customer service! In my opinion, any “coinless” casino that isn’t willing to round up to the nearest dollar for wins requiring the assistance of a slot attendant should really reconsider their procedures. First, post-pandemic, who wants to deal with coins? The dollar is so devalued now I don’t understand why the entire market segment of discount stores even refers to themselves as “Dollar” stores anymore! Second, what a pain to expect your employees to be handling change while running around on the floor. If I’ve done my nails, as an employee, why would I want to damage the nail polish by digging for metal in a coin purse? The employees have a lot to keep track of to begin with, get the coins out of their way. Third, if the rest of the floor is “penniless” (see what I did there?), why aren't the jackpots that way too? Round up or get the slot to print out a voucher for the cent amount. The slot can already print out a jackpot receipt for the slot attendants to verify with the cage what was paid, how hard is it to print a second voucher? Fourth, if I just won $581.65, I should get paid $581.65. If you want to pay me $582, I won’t argue, I always tip. BUT, DO NOT STIFF ME THE $0.65! Maybe some of my readers will disagree, but I’ve visited casinos where the slot attendants have access to change and refuse to pay me my entire win. That just pisses me off! As a matter of fact, some of the slot attendants seem to look at me sideways when they are walking away and I ask them for
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2022 | azgamingguide.com
the $0.65. That is part of my win, right? Was the $81 not a part of the win too? Or, by extension the $500? How about I get stubborn and demand to bet 80 credits for an 88 credit bet? Don’t ridicule me if I want the pennies! Pay me what I won! Fifth, don’t make me stand in a long line at the cage waiting to cash in my coins. Clearly label only one of the many ticket kiosks on the casino floor as the one which will dispense coins. Now that the casinos are frequently understaffed, postpandemic, the complex transactions at the cage make for lengthy waits for $0.65! So, to review, if casinos are planning on removing coins from the floor, really get rid of them. Assign one kiosk to dispense change and either round up on the hand pays, or print out a ticket for the balance. That’s not hard to achieve. And to the casinos, listen up, definitely pay your patrons what they won. Don’t underpay people. That’s just tacky. Like really tacky. I hear about it in my mail, you know? Underpaying makes it look like either the employee is stealing, as a group the employees are collectively stealing, or stealing from patrons in this manner is a policy set by the casino and is acceptable. You can write me at Sami@AZGamingGuide.com. Thanks for your letters and emails! Have fun and good luck! $

Late one night, as he and his family were about to go to bed, a man approached the mosquito that had taken to residing in their home. “I’m being hospitable here. Everyone drew some blood and it’s in this big jar. That should be enough for you and your family for at least the rest of this week. We’d appreciate it if you didn’t bite us while we are sleeping,” said the man. The mosquito responded, “I’m an honest and hard worker. I don’t take bribes!” At a marriage seminar on communication, the presenter declared: “It’s essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other. For instance, gentlemen, can you name your wife’s favorite flower?” One attendee leaned over, touched his wife’s arm gently, and whispered, “Pillsbury All-Purpose, isn’t it?” “A joint checking account is never overspent by the wife. It is simply underfunded by the husband.”—Anonymous “A fair-weather friend is one who is always around when they need you.”—Anonymous
