any of us experience difficulties concentrating and regulating our emotions. In my opinion, one way to bring back your ability to focus and also center yourself emotionally is to practice empathy, compassion, gratitude, “choose happy” (yes, it is a choice), and to regularly meditate using a mantra.
You may be asking yourself, “Why would I do any of that ‘new age’ stuff?” Well, based on a systematic review and meta analysis in March of 2022 of studies on the effectiveness of mantra based meditation (MBM) on mental health, “MBM appears to produce small to moderate significant reductions in mental health.” MBM generally involves the continuous repetition of a word, phrase, or set of syllables (either silently or aloud) with or without religious or spiritual content. The sound of a mantra within meditation has been suggested to act as an effective vehicle to override mental speech, which is the predominant form of conscious thought for most people, and to redirect those negative or intrusive automatic thoughts that perpetuate distress.
So, my solution when I’m unfocused and need to feel a little more lucky at the casino is to chant my good luck mantra in my mind, focus only on the game I'm playing and my breath. I’ve found from many years of experience, I am able to immediately focus and I do feel a lot luckier. I encourage everyone to come up with their own mantra and to practice a little meditation on a daily basis. You can start with the mantra, “I feel lucky!” Or, create your own!
Have A Lucky Month!

Dear AZ Gaming Guide, please give a big thank you to all the casinos in Arizona for staying smoke free. And, please tell them that we hope they never go back to smoking facilities again! It has been so nice to be able to play in a clean, fresh environment. My friends and I were talking the other day and we honestly don’t think we’d be able to go back to playing where there’s smoking allowed. Recently, we took a trip to [a casino] in Laughlin, Nevada over the summer and we had to cut our trip short because we couldn’t take it anymore. Come to find out while we were there, ALL the casinos in Laughlin still allow smoking! We had terrible headaches and we were sick to our stomachs. We are never going back to Laughlin, unfortunately. That was a place we really enjoyed going to but not anymore. Kudos to the Arizona casinos for going and staying smoke-free!
Karen Newman Chandler, AZKaren, thank you for your comment. My team and I agree with you wholeheartedly. Some of us here at the AZ Gaming Guide used to be smokers and are not anymore, some never smoked in their lives, and a couple still enjoy the occasional ciggy. However, whether we’re smokers or nonsmokers, we all have one thing in common and that is we all agree that the casinos should be smoke free. The air is cleaner, it’s healthier, you don’t smell like an ashtray when you come home, the machines (and chairs and tables and floors and, and, and) aren’t covered with ash.
Regardless of where you’re at, in a bar, a restaurant, a movie theater, a grocery store, on an airplane, you just can’t smoke indoors anymore. The same rules should apply for the casinos. In fact, all of my friends and family members who are smokers agree that they also prefer that casinos are non smoking because it is much more sanitary. And, our readers who smoke actually continue to tell us that they too prefer that the casinos remain smoke free. Because, according to them, they are used to going outside to smoke since they don’t smoke inside of their homes either.
Now, to be perfectly clear … not all casinos in Arizona have gone smoke free. There are casinos who allow smoking. And, to be honest, those casinos are doing a really great job in keeping the air fresh and the environment as clean as possible. In addition, there are smoke free casinos that allow smoking in certain areas only. Therefore, there are options for those who still prefer
to smoke inside. So, kudos to the casinos that have made their non smoking customers happy and kudos to those that have tried to accommodate those that smoke. Everyone wins and everyone is happy! Let’s just hope it stays that way!
Dear Editor, my wife and I just got seriously burned playing a slot. It’s a must hit by game where the jackpot says it will hit before it reaches $5,000. It was at $4,928 when we sat down. We thought it was close so we decided to play for it because we’ve seen other people doing this. Well, that was a nightmare! We didn’t hit it until the number was at $4,998.26! First of all, it took 9 hours to finish even though we were playing pretty fast. Second of all, we were down almost $4,000! Yes, that’s correct. We had to pump over $8,500 in just to get $5,000 back! Once we got the jackpot to $4,980, we were already in the hole $6,000 so we figured with $5,000 back after we hit it, we’d only be down $1,000 so we kept going. The game took another $2,500 from us before we got the jackpot to hit. What I want to know, was that incredibly bad luck on our part or did we start it way too early? How is anyone able to make money on these games playing for the jackpots? I don’t understand?
Burned But Never Again Tucson, AZ
Well, Burned But Never Again, not to be mean, just direct, that’s why it’s called gambling, my friend! This is yet another example of how there are no guarantees in the casino. When we walk in to the casino, we have to be prepared to handle losing. I did say handle, not expect! A Must Hit By Progressive (MHBP) is a challenging undertaking as each slot’s manufacturer has a different philosophy on the design of the math model governing the MHBP. There is no way of knowing (unless you keep meticulous records over time or have the proprietary math model) if a MHBP has an equal chance of popping at any value, or if the chances are weighted to the upper end of the progressive’s range. Then, there is the factor of the slot’s game mechanics itself. If it’s a crummy game, you may be in for the tough experience you describe. If the game is “cold” for long stretches, you’ll be kicking yourself! You most likely experienced a stretch of bad luck. You may have started too early for the game you chose to play. And, gamblers aren't making money on MHBPs. Exceedingly few gamblers have the consistent discipline, positive attitude, and luck during one play session (let alone multiple), paired with the appropriate knowledge, to make money on a MHBP, or on any game at a casino in the long run. $

Many casinos around Arizona have this game. Some casinos continue to add more units on their floor. In our opinion, those casinos in Arizona that don’t have this game should get it. And, we think you should try this game and tell us what you think. While you’ll recognize the perpetuating bonus game mechanic, Rich Little Piggies Meal Ticket & Hog Wild is not the same frustrating experience you expect from other slots. This is a fun game and it doesn’t play like other slots on the floor, so it’s a uniquely refreshing change of pace. As always, Scientific Games keeps the player experience cute and entertaining. The staff at the Arizona Gaming Guide were fans of the original Rich Little Piggies which was released in the early 2000s. VIDEO POKER CORNER
By Lana HartmannSTRATEGY CHANGES IN ULTIMATE X
Know Before You Go And Play A New Game With Different Rules
On the heels of all the questionable video poker holds I observe at the casinos, I see even more strange holds with Ultimate X (UX). If you are going to play UX, you should know what you are up against in terms of strategy. No, you can’t play UX the same way you play non UX games. That is, go ahead, play UX the same way and hand your bankroll over to the casino even faster than you may already be doing (that’s sarcasm, by the way).
So, here are the first twenty rules in a strategy for Double Double. This is for a straight up version of the game regardless of denomination or single hand and multi hand This is what you need to hold, in order. As I don’t have pages and pages to devote to the entire strategy, I’ve just picked the first twenty.
DOUBLE DOUBLE 9/6
Royal Flush
Four Aces/2s/3s/4s with A/2/3/4 (or kicker)
4 of a kind
Straight Flush
4 to a Royal Flush 3 of a kind (Aces)
Full House
4 to a Royal Flush Flush
Straight 3 of a kind (2s thru Ks)
4 to a Straight Flush 1 pair (Aces)
2 pair
3 to a Royal Flush (JQK) 1 pair (Kings)
3 to a Royal Flush (TJQ) 1 pair (Jacks or Queens)
4 to a Flush
3 to a Royal Flush (TJK/TQK, TJA/TQA/ TKA/JQA/JKA/QKA)
Now let’s move over to UX. I’ve listed the first twenty rules for the strategy for Double Double 10 Play at 9/6. Now the first few rules are pretty obvious. But then it gets interesting. Hold the Full House with Aces and don’t drop the pair! That’s a major rule change as this happens, to me at least, all the time! If you are a fan of UX, you should know why. And then, hold the two pair before you hold just the Aces! I constantly see players messing this up. Don’t make the same mistake from now on.
DOUBLE DOUBLE UX 10 PLAY 9/6
Royal Flush Four Aces/2s/3s/4s with A/2/3/4 (or kicker) 4 of a kind Straight Flush Full House 4 to a Royal Flush Flush Straight 3 of a kind 4 to a Straight Flush 2 pair 1 pair (Aces)
4 to a Flush with 3 high cards 1 pair (Jacks/Queens/Kings)
4 to a Flush with 0, 1, or 2 high cards 3 to a Royal Flush 4 to a Straight (2345 TJQK) 1 pair (22/33/44/88/99/TT)
3 to a Straight Flush (9JQ) 1 pair (sevens)

TABLE GAME FREEBIES
The More You Play, The More They Pay
Gamblers love free stuff. You can admit it. You can’t just walk into a new casino and ask for a free room and a steak dinner; you’ve got to “earn” it. But the player’s club is happy to reward your excellent action with complimentary goodies. The more you play, the more they pay.
Are they freebies? We could argue the semantics of “free,” but if you say it’s something you didn’t pay for directly, I think it counts. So, play when you want, show your player’s club card, get tracked, and enjoy all your perks.
Free Bet Blackjack
Free Bet Blackjack does give you free wagers. When you are dealt a two card 9, 10, or 11, you get to double down without adding any more chips to your bet. If you win the hand, the dealer pays your original wager and a free bet of equal value. You get more action with no risk.
You can split any pair except 10s, so stand on those, and you should free double down on a pair of 5s. In the proverbial nutshell, take every free double down and free split opportunity. We all crave action, and Free Bet offers it cheaply. It’s great when you’re running bad or on a short bankroll.
The house edge is only about 1% at Free Bet, even with the trade off that every hand pushes when the dealer busts with a 22. That might sound scary, and it’s a bit frustrating when it happens, but you don’t lose your wagers. It’s a push.
Think of it like rolling eleven at the dice table. It might be this roll, or it might not show for 20 minutes. Only the gaming gods know, and they don’t ever tell us in advance.
Arizona EZ Baccarat
Like Freebet, EZ Baccarat doesn’t charge the standard 5% commission on winning Banker wagers. Are they free? Sure, until the Banker makes a winning three card 7, and it’s not a winning wager; it’s a push.
Like Free Bet, EZ Bac has a slight house edge of about 1%. How often will the Banker draw a winning three card 7? Not very often. It only pops up about once in 45 hands, so you might play for hours, never pay a commission, and never get a winning Banker 7 that turns into a push.
EZ Bac is for you if you like to gamble and never pay commis-
You may have played various games over the years, from Pai Gow tiles to Pai Gow Poker, Commission Free Pai Gow, and now EZ Pai Gow.
Is the EZ variety a freebie? It depends on how you look at it. You’ll find EZ Pai Gow in Arizona casinos featuring no commission and a faster game. The EZ game makes any dealer queen high Pai Gow a push for every player. You can even have a lower Pai Gow and not lose.
Craps Odds Bets
When you bet the Pass Line at craps, you get Free Odds, meaning the casino pays you the true odds when you win with no edge for the house. Play 3 4 5 Odds offered in Arizona, and you’ll drive your Pass Line and Come Line bets down to a tiny house edge of .37%. $

TABLE GAMES
By TJ Jorgensen21—THE MOVIE
How Close To The Truth Is It?
Iam often asked about the movie 21 and how accurate it was. For those of you who don’t know, the movie was about college students from MIT who learned to count cards in blackjack and beat Las Vegas casinos out of millions.
In 1994, MIT students put a blackjack team together that did very well in Vegas, although the film made it seem like the money was flowing in. The Spotter and Big Player depicted in the movie is a very effective card counting tactic. They got the idea from the team I was on with Ken Uston in the late 70s and early 80s. Ken lived in Paradise Valley and was one of the best blackjack players in the world. They also made a movie about us called The Big Player
The way it worked, as shown in the movie, the Spotter would sit at a blackjack table making minimum bets and counting cards. When they received a good count they would signal the Big Player to come play. A good count means that the remaining cards are rich in Tens and Aces which favor the player. The Big Player would come to the table and the Spotter would say a code word to give the count. He or she would then starts making large bets and leave when the dealer shuffles, the count gets bad, or there’s a run of bad cards. In the movie, the Spotter stayed at the table and continued to play, but in reality the Spotter would find an excuse to leave the table for a phone call or bathroom break because this player wouldn’t want to take valuable cards away from the Big Player. Also they wouldn’t want the Pit Bosses to see them at the same table together and suspect them of working together. By using several Spotters they could wait for good counts at many tables.
The truth is counting cards is time consuming and not very exciting. It wouldn’t have made a very good movie to watch some guys playing cards and losing half the time. As a result, the movie added some Hollywood drama and a love interest.
The movie made it seem like there was only one guy in Vegas that knew about card counters. If he caught you, they would take you in the back room and you were beaten. In the 70s and 80s, when Vegas was run by the mob, that was probably true. Today if you are a suspected card counter or advantage player the casinos can ask you to leave or even ban you from playing, and they put you in what’s known as the “Griffith Book”, a book of known card counters. Once you are in the book, it
makes it very hard for you to play at any casino, especially since nowadays one casino might own twenty other casinos. While card counting is legal, it is frowned upon by most casinos.
Being from MIT the students were pretty smart but you don’t have to be a genius to count cards effectively, you just have to be willing to put in the time. If you make the effort, and learn to count cards, learn the playing strategies (there are 43 changes from basic strategy) and learn how to adjust your bets according to the true count, then you can get about a 1.5 percent advantage over the casino. Overall I liked the movie 21 and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in blackjack. $

HotStreak, a fast growing daily fantasy sports micro markets company, recently announced its $9 million Series A funding round. Led by Polychain Capital, HotStreak is also announcing that Fanduel co founder and former CEO, Nigel Eccles, is joining as Chairman of the Board.
“We’re incredibly excited that HotStreak’s technology and growth have attracted such an incredible set of investors,” said Greg Dean, CEO of HotStreak. “We realized that with our background in web3, we were uniquely positioned to solve a huge inefficiency in the industry. The Sharp™ protocol will bridge the worlds of regulated sports gaming with the superior set of web3 solutions that exist for digital currencies. With Sharp, a whole class of industry wide problems will disappear.” With this new round of capital, HotStreak will launch the Sharp Protocol, a permissioned blockchain infrastructure for regulated sports betting and fantasy operators. With Sharp payments, “Know Your Customer” requirements and settlements are handled at the protocol level, with integration being just a few lines of code.
The Arizona Gaming Guide had the opportunity to speak with CEO Greg Dean who said, “HotStreak’s technology removes the headache and costs of users and operators dealing with a ’wallet’ in user accounts. Winning bets are posted to a user’s funding source directly and immediately! We are building infrastructure for the entire regulated sports betting and daily fantasy industry. Our target is to have early adopters on board by the end of 2022. Arizona’s sports betting enthusiasts could be using HotStreak’s technology as soon as 2023.” When I asked Mr. Dean about his favorite casino game, he enthusiastically responded, “Craps! I enjoy playing craps at the casino because of the social aspect of the game.” $

Cheap Trick—Rescheduled!
Desert Diamond Sahuarita December 9, 2022
Due to a scheduling conflict caused by travel logistics, Cheap Trick’s Diamond Center concert slated for November 18 has been rescheduled for Friday, December 9, 2022. Guests should hold onto their tickets to the performance, which will be honored at the rescheduled show. Tickets continue to be on sale starting at $40.00 through Etix and at Desert Diamond’s Box Office. Facemasks are optional. Anyone exhibiting COVID 19 or flu like symptoms, or with recent exposure to a person with COVID 19, is asked to stay home. For more information visit DDCAZ.com.
Cheap Trick are an indisputable American institution, beloved around the globe since 1974 for their instantly identifiable, hugely influential, brand of pop rock 'n' roll. The band Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and Daxx Nielsen (drums) are true pioneers with an unparalleled streak of certifiably classic tunes, from "He's A Whore," "California Man" and "Dream Police" to "Surrender” and "I Want You To Want Me.” After a year of show cancellations due to the pandemic, Cheap Trick began touring once again with the same lineup of the last several years which includes Robin Taylor Zander on rhythm guitar and vocals.
Treena Parvello, Director of Government and Public Relations for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, said, “We want to make sure our guests have the opportunity to see Cheap Trick live at the Diamond Center. Thank you for your patience and understanding with the rescheduling on what is sure to be a fantastic show.” $

Terry Fator is back on stage after his record breaking residency at The Mirage, where he played in front of millions. Catch his award winning act, live on stage at the Pipa Event Center!
Terry Fator is the most gifted and accomplished ventriloquist/singer on the planet, whose repertoire includes more than 200 celebrity voices, many of whom we see on stage. Nothing connects people like laughter and song, and Terry is so grateful to once again have the opportunity to bring people together under the same roof after a year of being apart.
Terry Fator is perhaps the first entertainer to combine the art of ventriloquism with celebrity impressions. His puppets, including Cowboy Walter, Emma Taylor and Winston the Impersonating Turtle, effortlessly perform the singing styles of an eclectic group of stars including: Tony Bennett, Elvis, Maroon Five, Garth Brooks, Nat King and Natalie Cole, Roy Orbison, Marvin Gaye, Gnarls Barkley, James Blunt, Brooks & Dunn, members of The Rat Pack, Louis Armstrong and even Kermit The Frog.
Terry Fator is truly living the American dream, and has the opportunity to do what he loves each night: entertain audiences of all ages with his wholesome blend of family entertainment and dazzle them with his amazing talent. For more information visit PlayQCR.com. $
BAD BEHAVIOR & CONSEQUENCES
Fists, Beer Bottles, Bar Glasses, Canes, What’s Next?
AZ Gaming Guide, you need to do something about all the broken machines and the people at [the casinos]. They are acting [in a way they shouldn’t in public, in my opinion]. So many [casino patrons] are angry. If [the patrons] are this angry, why are they gambling? Isn’t it problem gambling? I’m scared to visit a casino [based on what appears to be an escalating situation]. I know everybody is angry [outside a casino]. But why do I have to tolerate [anger and bad behavior] when I just want to have fun and relax at [the casinos]? I’ve talked to employees and some supervisors at [the casinos] but nothing changes and it keeps getting worse every time we go. You have to fix this because I want [our casinos] back! [The casinos] belong to nice, fun-loving, happy people like us, not [angry and misbehaving patrons].
James & Martha S. Phoenix, AZ
James and Martha, thank you for being loyal readers. We truly appreciate your support of our publication!
While the Arizona Gaming Guide can’t fix this problem, we can only highlight how you feel. We know other patrons feel the way you do. They write us all the time. We feel the way you do. Scared for our safety, uncomfortable because of the anger, disillusioned because casino management does nothing.
Let’s make an analogy...I decide to go to a Phoenix Sun’s game (the season just started!) and throw my drink in the general direction of the court because I’m angry. Who cares why I’m angry! Rather, what do you think will happen to me? I’m on video surveillance and there are witnesses. Well, here’s the Footprint Center’s House Rules:
Footprint Center wants to ensure that guests have a fun and safe experience at the arena. ... Footprint Center staff and Phoenix Police Department will provide security for all events, guests, and performers. Footprint Center intends to provide all guests with a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable atmosphere. Consequently, arena management does not intend to allow a pleasant experience to be disrupted or ruined by unruly guests. Therefore, we have established the following rules for guest conduct: ... Guests using foul or abusive language or gestures will be ejected from Footprint Center with no refund. Guests appearing intoxicated will be denied entry or ejected from Footprint Center. Guests attempting to interfere with the progress of any event at Footprint Center will be ejected and subject to arrest. To enforce these policies, Footprint Center event staff and Phoenix Police Officers are located throughout the arena. Guests who are not here to enjoy the event or who cannot comply with these rules will not be welcome at Footprint Center.
Wow! I think they mean business. Don’t you? If only the casinos took their own house rules (those that post them) seriously.
I’ve personally witnessed fists, beer bottles and bar glasses used to hit the slots. The one that really scared me was the senior citizen who used a cane to hit the slot’s display and yell “F*@# You!” three times before shuffling off. The noise scared me. But his behavior scared me even more. If he was that enraged, where will all of this anger and frustration by patrons end?
Just the other day I was walking past a bank of games being “played” in full view of no less than three employees. One patron was hitting their slot so hard it was rocking back and forth on its base. The employees couldn’t have cared less.
Let me tell everyone this right now. The next time I witness angry and violent behavior from patrons and if security, casino employees, and management refuse to defuse the dangerous situation immediately, I’m calling the tribal police and I encourage all of our readers to do so as well. If they allow this behavior to continue, then they clearly don’t care or haven’t been trained as to what to do in this situation. I’m not sure what type of liability insurance the casino has, but it better cover a slot falling over on a patron when there is ample evidence (both from surveillance video and other patrons, can you say “cell phone” anyone?) why the slot tipped over and how long the episode had been going on for prior to the event!
And then there are the purses, man bags, backpacks, luggage, shopping bags, attached bags to strollers, walkers, and scooters, which are all allowed to be carried into a casino without so much as a bag check. In most casinos, the posted house rules clearly say “NO BACKPACKS.” Why then are people with backpacks allowed inside without having their bag scrutinized? Many women's purses (and some man bags) are so big, I think they qualify as backpacks. Why aren't they searched?
Have you seen broken slot machines? Have you seen violence in the casinos? Have you heard abusive language directed at slots, patrons, employees? Do you still feel safe walking into a casino? What should management be doing about the escalating anger and violence at the casinos in your opinion? I want to know what you think!
You can write me at Sami@AZGamingGuide.com. Thanks for your letters and emails! Have fun and good luck! $

Research shows that laughing stimulates the immune system and may help prevent or reverse some medical conditions.
For those of us who are still actually competent household handymen, where our fathers trained us and trained us to do things right and use our thinking caps, we know the line “Lefty loosey, righty tighty” and why it’s reversed for natural gas, we know what a tire iron is for and where the spare and the jack are in addition to being able to use them, we can jump a car in our sleep, we know there’s a difference between a vise and a vise grip, and that’s just the basics, thank you, we are a vanishing breed in this modern world. This is for you…
