Using “First Card is An Ace” In Tournament play
t seems that many tournaments lately offer a “First card is an Ace” option for an additional fee with your tournament entry. This option: allows you to play an ace once during any of the hands of a tournament as your first card. In a tournament that Blackjack pays 2 to 1, taking this option and playing it at the right time can be a game changer. As you’ve probably guessed, one of the advantages of the “First card is an Ace” is that it can be used to turn any hand containing a face card into a natural. Roughly speaking, after playing the big ace as the first card, we will then be dealt a natural 4/13=30.76% of the time. This is huge, especially if a natural pays 2 to 1. The “First card is an Ace” is also very valuable because we are guaranteed to be dealt a soft hand when we use it. This guarantees that you will be able to get two bets working via a double or a split without busting. Lastly, you are more likely than normal to simply win your hand. Anywhere from 43.39% vs the dealer’s Ace to 56.82% vs his 6. When your first card is an Ace, it usually gives you a big advantage. You need it the most on the last hand. The main reason, it is better to get ahead towards the end rather than the middle,
6 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2016
because there will be less rounds left for others to catch up with you. So when should you use this option? The answer to the question of when to play it is, as always --- it depends. It depends on: IF you are in the lead (save it for later) IF the leaders are betting wildly (save it for later) IF you can catch the leaders without it (save it for later) IF you really and truly need the lead NOW (use it NOW) I think that you are best to save it for the last hand, if possible, or for one of the last few hands at the very least. If you use it early however, your opponents have plenty of time to adjust their strategy and catch you. Once they do, you have wasted your most powerful weapon, while they probably still have it. The key to advancing/winning in table game tournaments is to not only get the lead, but to keep it. This is best done as late in the round as possible. Doing so on the final hand gives you a lock. This is a good reason to use "First Card is an Ace" to get the lead as late in the round as possible.
The other reason for you to keep your "First Card is an Ace" until near the end in a tournament is simply because, virtually everyone else does. If you begin the final hand without your "First Card is an Ace" while other players still have it, you better have at least a 2 x max bet lead, or minimally be able to cover 2 x max bet wins by your opponents. Otherwise you will find yourself getting beat on the final hand over and over again. On the other hand, If you still have it, and you have the lead, then you can effectively neutralize the "First Card is an Ace" held by your opponents. So to summarize, you want to use the “First Card is an Ace” to get the lead as late in the round as possible. If you can get the lead without it, then you are a huge favorite on the final hand. Otherwise you need to use it to get at least 1 max bet lead going into the final hand so that you can cover 2 x max bet wins by your opponents who still have it. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack.

Amburg. “We’re committed to the Tucson and Southern Arizona communities, and look forward to carrying on this tradition for years to come.” More than 100 participants came out to Sewailo Golf Club at Casino Del Sol for 18 holes of golf, to raise funds for the Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center and My Girl Power. Each organization will receive $30,000 to go towards their worthy causes that benefit Tucson’s youth.
The Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center’s mission is to protect and support children through a coordinated response to child maltreatment that includes intervention, assessment and prevention. The mission of My Girl Power is to help increase K-12 girls’ engagement levels in sports, arts, science, health, economics, and civics opportunities in their own backyards, to ensure successful pathways to thrive. “On behalf of My Girl Power, we are so humbled, honored and grateful to have been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the second annual Casino Del Sol Charity Golf Tournament,” said Co-founder and Chair of My Girl Power, Lucy Howell. “We’ll be able to do so much for our girls with the generous funds raised at this event.”
The Pascua Yaqui Tribe, the Yaqui people through its enterprises, and Casino Del Sol are committed to being a partner in the Southern Arizona community. A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER
Hot Slots
ou’ve probably heard both video poker and traditional slots players describe a machine as either “hot” or “cold”. What does this mean and is it true? by Expected Return (ER) The expected return means Linda Boyd the theoretical return either a slot or a video poker (VP) device will have over the life of the machine. There are differences in the meaning, however, because there is a skill component with VP but not with traditional slots. Slots: Some of the newer slot choices are popular with players because there’s the possibility of making a relatively small wager and winning a big jackpot. Note that I used the word “possibility” instead of “probability” and there’s a world of difference between the two. There are all sorts of interactive options like vibrating chairs, 3-D graphics and a cornucopia of sounds to increase the fun factor of the latest slots. However, the ER of the device you select is only known to the slot brass that orders the device and never to the player. You can have two side-byside devices that look identical but one could have an ER of 85% while the other’s ER is 90%; there’s no way to know by looking at them. Video Poker: One big plus for VP over traditional slots is that you can know the exact ER of the game by entering the game’s pay schedule into the software (I use Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker) or looking at the free tables in my book, “The Video Poker Edge”. Of course you have to play the game accurately to get the ER and anything can happen in the short run, meaning an individual session. Predictions: Now the big question is how can knowledge of the video poker game’s ER or the history of a traditional slot (meaning whether it has recently been winning or losing) help you as a player? Can past results be used to select a machine or not? Slots: If you’re a regular at a casino you may notice that one machine seems to win more than another in the long run and may choose that device; it’s still a crap shoot, but can’t hurt. You may even be correct if the slot boss ordered different chips for the devices. You can also use common sense before inserting money by reading the payout table. If you need a max bet to be eligible
for a jackpot, either bet max or don’t play. If there are progressive jackpots check and go for the one with the biggest payout. It’s surprising that many players plop down without even looking. Unfortunately, there’s no way to use past results to make future predictions. The odds will be exactly as indicated on the game’s ER chip and that number is a mystery to players. Video Poker: You’re going in with your eyes wide open on VP choices because you know the game’s ER in advance which depends solely on the pay schedule. For example, if you’re playing 9/6 JOB your ER is 99.5439%, assuming accurate play. When selecting a VP game by all means use the ER chart to determine the version of the game with the highest ER. Select 9/6 JOB over 8/5 JOB even though you’re likely to find both versions within the same establishment. Hot Slots: There is no way to use the past to predict the future on either a slot or a VP machine. The truth is that this also applies to every other game on the casino floor. I wrote a feature on how gamblers lost a fortune years ago in Monte Carlo on the game of roulette. It makes no difference on whether there have been twenty red spins or twenty black spins on the wheel, the odds before the next spin are equal in terms of black or red. That’s much different than predicting twenty consecutive spins of either black or red before the first of the twenty spins, which are astronomical. Applying this same logic to so called hot machines, there is no way to know whether a machine will keep winning or not if it’s been “hot” and the same is true if it’s been “cold”. Final Thoughts: I wish that the floor staff or other players could let me know which slot or video poker device was going to win; unfortunately, that’s pie-in-the-sky and not reality. Since we all have selective memories we will remember when they were right, but that’s serendipity, not mathematics. Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern & Midwest Gaming” & the latest edition of “American Casino Guide”. You can see her videos on YouTube or view them on American Casino Guide’s web site and her radio interviews are on iTunes. Boyd’s book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. The latest edition is available from amazon.com, Square One Publishers and book stores. Kindle edition now available. www.squareonepublishers.com Toll Free: 877-900-BOOK

The Great Northwest T
he smell of good coffee, the crack of a bite into a fresh apple, welcome you to the great Northwest. And the center of it all is Seattle. Share Northwest traditions at Tillicum Village, as you go back in time with the Chinooks. Visit the “longhouse,” a recreated ancient Native American communal dwelling. Enjoy salmon cooked on stakes over an open fire, accompanied with appropriate sides, including whole grain bread. Your departure point for this trip is the Seattle Central Waterfront. Cruise across Puget Sound to Blake Island State Park, the home of this unique village. For another great adventure, drive your car onto the Ferry and take a short trip to the beautiful San Juan Islands - On this one hour trip, you will no doubt catch sight of groups of whales who call that area home. Back on the Mainland, visit Pioneer Square, the city’s birthplace, for an underground walking tour beneath Seattle’s sidewalks. Return to Seattle’s Victorian Era, in these subterranean passages, and learn about the colorful characters that once called Seattle home. Next visit the “Soul of Seattle,” The Pike Place Market.

Almost 100 years old, it is the perfect spot to find that great cup of coffee, and crisp Washington apple, among the over 240 year-round businesses, hundreds of street performers and musicians, and the acres of farmers’ tables, with the freshest of produce. This is not a metropolitan mall, but an old marketplace, with cobblestone streets, and limited parking (plan to do some serious walking). To go from the downtown area to Seattle Center and the Space Needle, try the monorail. Built for the World’s Fair of 1966, visit the Space Needle’s observation deck, for a breathtaking view of the city, and the wonders that surround it. The Seattle Center also houses museums, stages, sports teams and an amusement park. It is home to more than 5,000 free public performances every year. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Rules Don't Apply Howard Hughes' slow decent into madness as he tried to maintain control of his empire plays out while an actress under contract to his studio and one of his drivers contemplate a forbidden romance by and their future careers. Hughes is David Ramsey aware that people believe he may be losing his mind and is desperate to prevent them from putting him in a psychiatric ward costing him everything he has worked for. He goes to extreme measures including never meeting anyone he does not already know. Warren Beatty is brilliant when he wears all the hats on a film as he does in this one. The acting top notch but the story gets a little convoluted at times.
David’s Video Details Hell or High Water
Two brothers resort to robbing banks to save the family farm in West Texas during the most recent economic crisis. They are very smart about it only taking small bills and never robbing customers or hurting anyone. The F. B. I. has other things on their plate and are not interested in spending any time on these two small timers so its up to the Texas Rangers. Marcus is just weeks from retirement and his long suffering partner, Alberto, is counting the days. The acting is superb, even the minor characters are outstanding. The writing makes you care about everyone. This modern western is one of the best movies of the year. "Hell or High Water" is a little gem of a movie that is worth looking for.
Star Trek Beyond
The Edge of Seventeen Nadine has always been an outsider with only one friend. School has always been difficult and it's even worse in High School. When her friend falls for her annoyingly perfect brother he life falls apart. Then she accidentally sends an inappropriate text to a boy she has a crush on. She goes to the only person she trusts, a teacher with a dry sense of humor. This teen angst film is one of the funniest films of the year. The cast is perfect, the writing is witty and spot on hilarious. If you are looking for a funny film this is the one for you. 28 ARIZONA PLAYER November 2016
The Enterprise rushes out of Star base Yorktown on a rescue mission only to be ambushed as they approach the planet where a ship has crashed. The enemy is unstoppable, the Enterprise is boarded and the crew evacuated to the planet. The Alien leader is after an artifact that was on the Enterprise but it now appears to be with one of the survivors. The crew is captured but Kirk joins with an escaped prisoner to free them and stop the leader’s plans to destroy the Federation. There is a lot of action and a few touching moments. Unfortunately, the big reveal is disappointingly reminiscent of previous films in the series. Still it's a fun romp with the Enterprise crew.
Anthropoid
This film is based on the true story of “Operation Anthropoid”. The WWII mission was to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich - the main architect of the “Final Solution” the Reich's third in command after Hitler and Himmler and the leader of the German forces in occupied Czechoslovakia. His reign of terror prompts the Czech government-in-exile to send two soldiers in to meet with the underground and accomplish their mission. At first the underground is not cooperative and it is up to the agents to convince them to help no matter the consequences. No punches are pulled, at times it’s very graphic and emotional. The top-secret mission that helped change the course of the war is an amazing story.

From the county where drunk driving is considered a sport, comes this true story. A routine police patrol car parked in an adjacent lot of a bar in small Texas town known for patrons who drank way too much and DUI’s were a common outcome. At closing the officer noticed a man leaving the bar so intoxicated that he could barely walk. He stumbled around with the officer quietly observing. The old fellow tried his keys on several vehicles, before he managed to find his pickup truck and fell face first into seat with his door wide open as patrons left the bar and drove off. Finally he sat up, started his truck, turned the wipers on, flicked the emergency blinkers on,
honked the horn and then finally switched on the head lights. He moved the truck forward a few feet, reverse a few feet then remained still for about 5 minutes as other vehicles drove around him. At last, when there were only a few vehicles left in the parking lot, he pulled out of the lot and drove slowly down the road. The police officer, having waited patiently all this time, started up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the man over and administered a breathalyzer test. But the unit indicated that the man had not consumed any alcohol - dumbfounded, the officer said, I'll have to take you to the police station sir, my breathalyzer unit must be broken.' "I doubt it", said the proud sober Texan, “you see – tonight it was my turn to be the designated decoy”
A REASONABLE REQUEST
A calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist and whispered “I would like to buy some type of drug that would render my husband lifeless and be undetectable in an autopsy” The pharmacist asked, “Why in the world do you need something like that?” She softly replied “I need it to dispose of my Gigolo husband who has been unfaithful to me at least 10 to 20 times over the last 25 years.” The pharmacist’s eyes got huge as he exclaimed, “Lord have mercy! I can’t give you something to do away with your husband - Absolutely not! At that point the middle aged woman, nodded her head, reached into her purse and pulled out a photo of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife. The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, “Well - You didn’t tell me you had a prescription.”
