A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

VP New Year’s Resolutions

vowed that I would no longer set myself up for by failure with New Year’s Linda Boyd resolutions that sound good on paper, but seem unachievable after a few weeks. Things like going to the gym for two hours a session, four days a week and eating only gluten free products fall by the wayside around February. Still, I have no problem making firm decisions regarding gambling habits; for me, they’re much easier to keep. Even if you only do some of these things is better than flying by the seat of your pants once you see the glittering lights at your favorite casino. Here are some worthy 2017 resolutions for Arizona’s VP players. Check Pay Schedules: I still see people plopping down before checking the pay tables or the size of progressive jackpots. I’ll have more details on why this is so important in another column. Minimally, you should check the ER (expected return) for the version of the game you’ve selected by using the tables in my book “The Video Poker Edge” or by using tutorial software. Home Practice: I’ve been playing several classic games like 9/6Jacks or Better (9/6JOB), 8/5Bonus Poker (8/5BP), Full Pay Deuces Wild (FPDW), 10/7Double Bonus (10/7DB), Not-So-Ugly Deuces Wild (NSUD) and several others for many years. So, you’d think I know all the holds, inside out, upside down and backwards. If that’s what you think, then

6 ARIZONA PLAYER January 2017

you would be wrong. There are just too many combinations of possible dealt hands to remember every nuance, penalty card exception and anomaly for all of these games. Even though I know the basics I still practice on my home software before heading for a casino and so should you. The best on the market, in my opinion, is Dean Zamzow’s WinPoker, available online and through amazon. Use Slot Card: Let me count the ways that your free slot club card is a benefit. Free rooms, food, concert tickets, event entries, cash and gifts – It makes no sense to throw all of these things away. Keep in mind that there is zero connection between the slot opening for your player’s card and the device where the RNG (random number generator) is housed. In addition to all of these incentives is the fact that you can fade your winnings against your losses on both your federal and state tax returns. (Not all states allow this but, fortunately, Arizona does.) Choose Days: Most people have to work so they’re not as flexible as retirees on scheduling their casino jaunts. For those not restrained by a job, you should go during non-peak times for a number of reasons. You can go when they’re having a promotion, giving away gifts or offering multiple points and can choose almost any machine or game. In addition, there’s less smoke, faster responses to mechanical problems and no lines in the restrooms or at ticket redemption kiosks. Self-Restraint: One of the most important resolutions for Arizona players for 2017 is to stick to your pre-determined budget and demonstrate self-

control. Even if you’ve found a positive play, that’s one where the ER is over 100% (it’s rare, but can happen when you find a good VP pay schedule and add the value of multiple points to your theoretical return), you have to know when it’s quitting time. Often positive ER plays involve infrequent hands, like a royal flush, and your pockets aren’t deep enough to play for hours. You should never go beyond your pre-determined budget by making lots of trips to the ATM.

Impaired Players:

There’s an accurate adage for VP and all table games that involve skill components (luck is always part of the short-term equation), “don’t drink ‘derive’”. There’s a lot of thought that goes into accurate play and you only get the ER with accurate play. That definitely won’t happen if you’re tired, drunk or drugged.

Final Thoughts:

It’s good to make some non-stress inducing New Year’s resolutions that are doable without sweating to the oldies or buying pre-packaged foods from a diet plan. Going to your favorite casino gets you out of the house and is fun, especially if you increase your odds of either playing longer or coming home a winner. Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern & Midwest Gaming” and the latest edition of “American Casino Guide”. Watch her videos on YouTube or view them on American Casino Guide’s web site and her radio interviews are on iTunes. Boyd’s book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and strategy cards for the most popular games. Are you making good Blackjack Decisions? he Decisions that you make in regards to your Blackjack play can be influenced by your personal factors such as; the amount of time you have to play. Your bankroll and your overall Blackjack skills have a great deal to do with the choices that you make at the table. In fact you will have a 25% chance of being ahead after 25,000 hands – Here are factors you should consider to help you make good blackjack decisions. Blackjack Table Selection Hands are played at a fast pace so if you choose a table with several players you have more time to make correct decisions, especially if you sit in the middle or end of the table. Most Casinos will let you have a basic strategy chart while you play so take advantage of that if you’re not 100% sure on basic strategy. Additionally the slower pace will make your money last longer. by TJ Jorgensen

gaming news Chicanos Por La Causa Charity Poker Tournament in Tucson This February, Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment is offering poker fans a chance to win big while supporting a great cause. The Chicanos Por La Causa Poker Tournament returns to Desert Diamond’s Tucson location on Nogales Highway from February 10 – 12, 2017. The charity poker tournament is the latest step in Desert Diamond’s long history of support for Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC), a nonprofit committed to promoting stronger and healthier communities throughout Arizona. The casino has hosted previous charity tournaments and has been a sponsor of numerous other CPLC events over the years, as the two organizations have worked together to find opportunities to benefit the community. Funds from the charity poker tournament support one of CPLC’s longestrunning programs, called Nahui Ollin. This program works with high schools students on the importance of building self-confidence while focusing on dropout prevention, reducing and preventing drug use, tobacco cessation and prevention of teen pregnancy. The program serves roughly 400 students from four local high schools. The 2017 Chicanos Por La Causa Charity Poker Tournament will be a No Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament with seating limited to 120 participants and a prize pool of up to $22,000. Buy-in is $200, with $70 of buy-in benefitting Chicanos Por La Causa and the rest going towards the prize pool and administrative costs.

There will be two qualifying rounds for the tournament at noon on Feb 10 and 11, with finals starting at noon on Feb 12. Early registration at Desert Diamond’s Poker Room starts January 22. Participants who register before January 28 will receive $3,000 bonus chips, while those who register before February 4 will get $2,000 bonus chips. Early Bird chips will be available each qualifying round, up to $6,000. In addition to the charity poker events, Desert Diamond Casinos’ Sahuarita location has hosted the CPLC’s Annual Southern Arizona Gala at its Diamond Center since that venue first opened its doors. The dinner, one CPLC’s largest fundraising events each year, recognizes individuals who have made a difference for the community. Past awardees have included Desert Diamond COO Libby Francisco. “We’re very excited to once again host this fantastic tournament and continue supporting the great work that CPLC is doing for young people in our community,” said Treena Parvello, Director of Public Relations and Communications for the Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise. “For many years, Desert Diamond has been a strong partner of the CPLC and their mission of providing needed services to the most vulnerable Arizonans. We’re glad to offer poker fans a chance to join us in giving back to this fantastic organization.” In addition to the CPLC event, the Poker Room offers No-Limit Texas Hold’em Poker Tournaments Mondays and Thursdays at 9:30am and Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:00pm. Buy-in is $35, including a $5 entry fee. Desert Diamond Casino Tucson’s Poker Room can be reached at (520) 342-1810 for any questions about the Chicanos Por La Causa Charity Poker Tournament or other events.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR

by David Ramsey

Top Ten Films of 2016

1. Hell or High Water

2. La La Land

A modern day western about two brothers who resort to robbing banks to save the family farm in West Texas, with the Texas Rangers fast on their trail. The acting is superb, even the minor characters are outstanding. The writing makes you care about everyone.

Mia is a struggling would be actress. Sebastian is a struggling jazz musician. As their romance grows their careers take different paths and compromises are made. This is a wonderful musical with great music, perfect cast and a well-directed brilliant script.

3.. Deadpool

4. Zootopia

The story of the “merc with a mouth” This is the first R-Rated Marvel film and it earns that rating. It is true to the comic, very funny from the opening credits to the very end and part of the 'X-Men' universe. Everything about "Deadpool" is perfect.

Set in a world where animals act as humans where predators and prey have learned to live together. This is one of those rare animated films that has something for adults and children. It’s funny, has a great message and a nice touch of suspense.

David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR 5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Before "A New Hope" a band of rebels steals the plans for the Death Star in this prequel that sets up the entire series. The cast is great, there is more action than any other "Star Wars" film and it blends perfectly into the next film but it is unique – This may be the best film in the entire series.

6. Captain America: Civil War A pivotal film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it is one of the best super heroes movies. While there is plenty of action, with some surprises including a much anticipated debut, it is the dramatic scenes that are the most powerful and make this a unique super-hero film that actually has a plot that does not include a super villain.

7. Moonlight

8. The Edge of Seventeen

A timeless story of human self-discovery and connection, chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

Nadine has always been an outsider with only one friend when that friend falls for her annoyingly perfect brother her life falls apart. This teen angst film is one of the funniest films of the year. The cast is perfect, the writing is witty and spot on hilarious.

9. 10 Cloverfield Lane

10. 20th Century Women

After a car accident Michelle wakes up in a locked bare room chained to the wall. At times an intense edge-of-your-seat thriller while at others it›s a mystery all with a sci-fi twist. The script is perfect and the cast is ideal.

This is the story of three women who explore love and freedom in Southern California during the late 1970s. The cast is terrific, the story is compelling and the direction is personal.
