A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

VP Progressive Jackpots

imes are getting tough all over and that by includes for video poker Linda Boyd (VP) players. Some of the best remaining plays are for progressive jackpots once they get high. Keep in mind, however, that your expectations have to be reasonable and anytime your expected return (ER) relies on rare hands like the royal flush (RF) or four-of-a-kind (4OAKS), the volatility increases as well. Base Game: Before even considering a VP game, even a progressive, you should make sure that you have a decent base game - If, for example, the best Double Double Bonus (DDB) game available is 8/5 DDB and it’s not even in a progressive format, I would play something else. Even if your game is progressive you should look at the amounts before taking a seat. Sometimes, however, the progressive jackpots are high enough to make it a positive play, even over 100%, giving the player an advantage over the house. Volatility: Referring to Table 1.1 you can see that the variance, a measure of the games volatility or risk to running out of bankroll, is sky high in the progressive example. Be aware that all versions of DDB are risky business considering that 9/6Jacks or Better (9/6JOB) has a variance of 19.51468 by comparison. If you’ve selected a risky game you could quickly run out of money when you fail to get the statistically expected number of rare hands, like a RF or 4OAKS. Even if you’re playing a nonprogressive version it’s a dangerous choice.

I had to use estimates because the meter is constantly changing, but these figures give you an estimate of both the ER and volatility for this game. Adjusting Play: Although progressives will be played much like the base game you will have to change your play for infrequent hands, like a RF. Normally, for example, dealt a high pair or three to the royal you would hold the paying pair; however, with a progressive royal you would hold three to the royal instead when the progressive gets to

a certain point. You should practice on tutorial software (I recommend WinPoker), before going to the casino since the exact amount varies with each VP game. (My book, “The Video Poker Edge” lists the exact amount for the most popular games.) Quitting Time: One of the most important things to keep in mind on progressives is the impact that long shot plays can have on your bankroll. Even if the royal is huge, so is the variance and you should avoid going above your budget with frequent trips to the ATM. Over time you will get your odds by only playing progressives when the amounts are high; however, short term results, like a single session, can be frustrating and devastating to your bankroll. Self-control is an absolute must, especially with long-shot games like Progressive DDB. Once the progressive jackpot is hit, it could be the royal or certain 4OAKS, it’s time to move on. Final Thoughts: Spend some time walking around a casino before deciding what you’re going to play. This is not only true for VP progressive jackpots but also for traditional progressive slot games. You can still find positive plays in your favorite Arizona casino if you’re patient and take your time before inserting those twenties. Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern & Midwest Gaming” and the latest edition of “American Casino Guide”. Her videos are on YouTube and on American Casino Guide’s web site, her radio interviews are on iTunes. session will consist of 4 tables of up to 6 players each, playing 15 hands of blackjack. One guest per table with the most chips and the next two highest chip totals from the remaining players of this round after 15 hands will advance. There will be up to 6 winners. The 6 winners will advance to the Championship round. The Championship Round will consist of 1 session composed of up to the 6 finalists from the Semi-Final round with 1 table of up to 6 players, each playing 21 hands of blackjack. The Dealer will issue each guest $1,000 in tournament chips for use in the session. Guests may not keep any chips remaining at the end of the session for use in later sessions. Tournament chips have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for cash. The Dealer will deal 15 hands of blackjack in the qualifying rounds; 15 in the semi-final and 21 in championship rounds. After 12 hands in the qualifying round and the semi-final and after 16 hands championship rounds have been played, the Dealer will stack each guests remaining chips to facilitate a count of the chips. The Dealer will call out the total for each guest to hear. At the end of each session the Tournament Assistants will log the scores. All bets must be in multiples of $5, with a minimum bet of $10 and a maximum bet of $1000. The Championship

Round will determine the winners of the tournament prizes. Last year was a sell out so it›s a good idea to sign up early.

Why You should Play Recently, whenever a Casino hosts a Blackjack Tournament, it is a sell-out. That’s probably because the risk vs reward is so attractive for Players. For example, I can safely say that if you walked into a casino with $50 and bought in at a blackjack table, it is not very likely that you would walk out $800 to $1000 ahead. But if you take that same $50 and enter a blackjack tournament, your $50 entry fee will get you real close to that amount if you finish in the money. That’s probably why Blackjack Tournaments are getting so popular, and the Blackjack Tournament Players Community is growing so fast. After all, it’s a win-win situation for both the Casino and Players. The Casino gets 100 plus Blackjack Players plus their significant others or friends in the casino plus the Players get a shot at a nice reward if they finish in the money, along with a lot of fun.

T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. He has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world and has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack

gaming news Casino donates to Elder Refugee Program Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino recently donated $5,000 to the Area Agency for Aging for its Mosaic Center Elder Refugee Program. This donation is to help the program move to a larger center. “The Mosaic Center is an incredible program that gives back to the community in ways that are especially helpful to our area’s seniors. The Center provides them with the resources necessary to connect with others and help them make tangible progress within their own lives,” said Robert Livingston, regional vice president and general manager for Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. “Being able to donate to an organization such as the Area Agency for Aging is a tangible way for Harrah’s employees to show their appreciation and support a worthy cause.” The Refugee Program was developed to provide services and support to elder refugees 60 years or older living in Maricopa County. These services include critical needs case management, housing and home management assistance, referrals for aging services, and interpretation and translation services, to name a few. The Center also provides various activities and meals in addition to transportation to those who need it. The Native American Seniors is also housed at The Mosaic Center, a program that enables Native Americans over 60 to connect with one another. Elders from 12 different tribes take part in this program. The Mosaic Center is open four days a week and is located at 1430 E. Indian School Rd., #110, Phoenix, AZ 85014. gaming news CASINO DEL SOL WINS FIRST PLACE TRIBAL SPIRIT OF GIVING AWARD

TUCSON CASINO NAMED ONE OF ARIZONA’S BEST HOTELS

On Feb. 1, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and their enterprise, Casino Del Sol, was recognized with a first-place honor for their Employee Tribal Cultural program at the Tribal Spirit of Giving Awards ceremony during Raving’s 19th annual Indian Gaming National Marketing Conference. The Tribal Spirit of Giving Awards recognize Tribal organizations and their history of uncommon generosity and support to their Native and non-Native communities. These prestigious awards highlight the acts of giving that Tribal casinos and governments have done on behalf of their communities, employees, and customers. “This award reflects the commitment to community and culture that is so important to Casino Del Sol and the Pascua Yaqui Tribe,” said Kimberly Van Amburg, CEO of Casino Del Sol. “To be recognized for something that we hold so dear to our hearts is a source of great pride for our organization, and is the reason we call ourselves the Sol of Tucson.” Each year since Casino Del Sol opened, more than 22 years ago, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe has implemented an Employee Tribal Cultural Program. For four days during the week of Easter, all casino and Tribal operations are closed, to allow the more than 1,500 employees to participate in the Pascua Yaqui Lenten and Easter ceremonies. The Tribe also pays all employees during this time off, allowing them to spend this time with family and friends without worry of financial hardship. This closure allows employees to focus on their cultural festivities without having to choose between their work responsibilities and cultural responsibilities. In addition to the Easter ceremonies, Casino Del Sol also offers time off to employees to participate in important non-Lenten cultural ceremonies, such as honoring a passed on loved one, or celebrating other cultural holidays. In the nearly 23 years of this program, Casino Del Sol has sacrificed revenue and paid out more than 500,000 man hours during the Easter holiday. Additionally, more than 250,000 man hours have been paid out for other cultural ceremonies. This is over and above the traditional paid time off most other companies provide, and truly shows Casino Del Sol’s appreciation to their employees. For more information about Casino Del Sol, visit www.casinodelsol.com or call 1-855-SOL-STAY (765-7829).

For the second consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report, a nationally recognized publisher of consumer advice and information, named Casino Del Sol one of the Best Hotels in Tucson and Arionza during the publication’s annual evaluation of hotels with the best reputation among guests and experts alike. “We are incredibly proud to be recognized as one of the state’s and city’s best hotels for the second year in a row,” said Kimberly Van Amburg, CEO of Casino Del Sol. “As the Sol of Tucson, we strive to provide an outstanding experience to all who walk through our doors, and this award truly speaks to that. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the continued dedication of our remarkable staff.” The 2017 Best Hotels rankings evaluate more than 3,000 luxury properties across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. The methodology combines both expert and guest sentiment, in addition to industry accolades a hotel receives, to determine each hotel's rank. "The properties on the U.S. News Best Hotels rankings meet the standards of both everyday travelers and industry experts in offering exceptional customer service and luxury amenities," said Erin Shields, travel editor at U.S. News. DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR John Wick: Chapter 2 Picking up where the first one left off Wick tries to go back into retirement when an old 'friend' comes calling with a marker to cash in. John rejects the marker turning down the job and brings the wrath of the organization he thought he had left. Left with no options he reluctantly by accepts the job which only complicates things David Ramsey more. The action is non-stop and the fights are spectacular in this sequel that rivals the original. After watching "John Wick: Chapter 2" I can›t wait for Chapter 3.

David’s Video Details The Edge of Seventeen

Nadine has always been an outsider with only one friend. School has always been difficult and it›s even worse in High School. When her only friend falls for her annoyingly perfect brother her life falls apart. Then she accidentally sends an inappropriate text to a boy she has a crush on. She goes to the only person she trusts, a teacher with a dry sense of humor. This teen angst film is one of the funniest films of the year. The cast is perfect, the writing is witty and spot on hilarious. If you are looking for a funny film this is the one for you.

Hacksaw Ridge

The LEGO Batman Movie The Joker breaks everyone out of Arkham Asylum to get Batman›s attention. Batman is a lonely egomaniac, but then we all knew that. When he tells the Joker he is not his arch rival it causes him to go after an even bigger weapon that could destroy the world. Meanwhile Batman accidentally adopts and orphan who becomes Robin and has to come to terms with being part of a family. There are some funny, witty moments but this spin-off misses the mark set by "The Lego Movie" in every way.

Desmond Doss enlists in the army against is father›s wishes but pledges to never touch a weapon or kill anyone. He becomes an Army Medic and proves himself when his unit is assigned to take Hacksaw Ridge on Okinawa. The battlefield carnage is overwhelming but Doss never stops saving the wounded. The action is spectacular and the direction is perfect. Based on the true story "Hacksaw Ridge" is an inspiring story of a man›s conviction and heroism.

Allied

A British intelligence officer infiltrates Casablanca in 1942 where he teams up with a beautiful French resistance fighter to accomplish a deadly mission. They fall for each other and he arranges for her to travel back to England with him. Their relationship grows while the war rages around them. It›s not long before they are married and have a child but the pressure of the war intrudes on their happiness. The writing goes from action to romance to tension and back. ‹Allied› is one of the best war movies in a long time. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies. com. Joke page, ASTROLOGY, Casino directory Little Travis and His Favorite Animal

Our teacher asked what my favorite animal was, and I said, “Fried chicken.” She said I wasn’t funny, but she couldn’t have been right, because everyone in class laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too, especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal’s office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

jokes of the month

The next day in class, my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal’s office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most. I told her, “Colonel Sanders.” I’ll bet you can guess where I am again!

Need a quick one liner? Here are a few; Life is all about perspective. The sinking of the Titanic was a miracle to the lobsters in the ship’s kitchen. I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom until they are flashing behind you. Someone asked me what was my favorite mythical creature? I said “an honest politician.” I’d like to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather – Not screaming like the passengers in his car.
