advice is simple: “Buy a lot of wine and do your research.” He also believes that a general love of wine is a crucial factor for a winemaker. “I bought a ridiculous amount of wine from 2001 through 2009. And I drank it… usually with friends,” he continued. “And I

paid attention and learned a lot. Our wines today are so much more nuanced and fresh and complex than they used to be.” Kent notes his father’s influence as a key element in his career and says he would not have become as immersed in wine without his father’s enthusiasm. Passion is contagious and passionate people spread the word. I am an example of this phenomenon. Being introduced to my first great Arizona wine 17 years ago started me on the path of telling others about it and seeking more. Since you’ve read this far, you likely are interested in further wine research. For our

collective edification, I asked Kent Callaghan to provide a list of selections that would allow us to compare and contrast Arizona wines with their old-world counterparts. The main point? These Arizona wines can stand proudly next to their brothers and sisters from “across the pond.”
