What a year 2014 was! We had android spiders, flying cars, the best hotels and their wood panelled bars... We are now looking at this New Year with glee, a taste of health and holistic spas, Mr Universe is training hard, and a lady in waiting to take her tabard. We've gone down the path of hobbies and fun with tractor collections and a master of paint, we look at tattooing, a tribal art to observe, but not for the faint. We explore new art – Mirek Lucan, one chap and his marker, the mood is light but the nights are darker... The houses we enjoy are overflowing with coffee, the air is scented, warm and frothy. We take pleasure in our cuppa, a morning treat, waiting for what the daytime will bring, taking strides into the twilight with an ice cold gin sling. Whatever your resolutions, we wish you one thing, a happy and healthy 2015 to you and your kin. Have an amazing year gang, we charge our glasses (G&Ts of course) to you and yours. Happy 2015 Dorset!

Find yourself again... Mellulah Therapy & Yoga Retreat is tucked away in the beautiful secret hamlet of Luccombe Farm, in picturesque Milton Abbas, Dorset. If you are searching for peace, balance and harmony, you can be sure to find them here. Mellulah’s founder, Saira Francis, believes that it has never been more important to take care of ourselves in mind, body and spirit. Stress is now the main cause of illness in the UK, so the alleviation of stress is essential in maintaining good health and a sense of wellbeing. Yoga and holistic therapies are not only enjoyable and relaxing but can help to keep us physically and emotionally balanced and healthy. The use of complementary therapies is prevalent all over the world and over the last few decades there has been a growth of interest in them, in the UK. Many GPs now refer patients for therapies, alongside more conventional medication and treatment. Massage, reflexology and hands-on healing can have profound effects on stress levels by lifting mood, bringing warmth and pleasure to the body, and creating feelings of balance and serenity. Taking a regular yoga class can also help to detox body and mind, bringing a sense of wellbeing, balance and calm. Yoga is the ancient art of health and healing, originating in India over 5000 years ago, and the yogic lifestyle centres around practising mindfulness, learning postures (known as asanas) and attempting to live life in truth and authenticity. Meditation and relaxation are part of any yoga class and devoting time each week to this peaceful practice can have long-term benefits for the mind and body. Attendees always leave Mellulah’s yoga classes feeling rejuvenated and uplifted – both mentally and physically. Once the basics are learnt, the practice of yoga and meditation can be continued at home and used to help bring about stillness and calm at any time. arkadia magazine

If you would like to really immerse yourself in the yogic life, for a day or a full weekend, a yoga retreat could be just what you need. A retreat is a great idea if you are in need of a kick start to your yoga practice, or if you are stressed-out and need an indulgent break that’s all about you. Mellulah run yoga retreats throughout the year, offering a variety of classes and workshops, including mindful meditation, chakra healing, sound healing with Tibetan singing bowls and gong bath, as well as working with yoga and deep relaxation exercises. www.mellulah.co.uk wellbeing@mellulah.co.uk 01258 880505 07809 141815 West Luccombe Cottage Luccombe Farm Milton Abbas DT11 0BE

Yoga classes are run at Mellulah on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings, therapies are available every day and yoga retreat days and weekends are held throughout the year. Private classes, well-being spa days and exclusive retreats are also available on request. Ambition.

Jenny Clark – tattooist, bodybuilder, mum... Your body is quite remarkable and you’ve reached this level of fitness and muscle definition in just two years! How is that possible? Well, in my 20s I was really into Thai boxing, kickboxing and swimming, but things changed when I met my future husband. I guess routines changed, as they do when you get into a relationship, so I fell out of love with exercise a bit. After a pregnancy and C-section I got depressed, gained weight and was very unhappy with the way I looked. So I hit the gym hard, competed in roller derbies and never looked back. My gym manager suggested bodybuilding, as apparently I’m very symmetrical. Not something I’d previously considered, but that suggestion started the process. To maintain your physique, what is your daily exercise regime? I have to train, train, train! I started my bodybuilding regime with high cardio exercises to burn the excess fat, then small weights in training. As I progressed, my trainer then put a proper package together. This is where it started getting serious! The cardio increased – treadmill (on an empty stomach) for one hour, 15 minutes, then a protein shake and weights for 45 minutes, before a further 45 minutes of cardio. I noticed the change in my body after around 6-7 months. As well as an incredible amount of exercise and weight training, you must have to stick to a very specific diet to maintain your amazing physique. What are your top food tips for those wanting a body like yours? I live out of Tupperware boxes! I don’t know what a plate is anymore. The diet is a massive part of the process and I have to eat little and often. Starting at 8am, I eat every three hours right through to 11pm. These meals consist of chicken and veg and measured protein shakes. It is very precise and strict, but your body does get used to it. It’s challenging weaning off sweet foods like chocolate, as you are allowed a ‘re-feed’ day each week to balance your body’s sugars, but this dwindles the closer you get to a competition. Eating little and often is key and drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, increasing to 6 litres as a show approaches. Tattoos are a big part of your life, both professionally and personally. They are often associated with bodybuilding – why do you think that is and how important are they to your overall look when you compete? It’s a personal choice thing really; tattoos actually detract from muscle definition. I go dark to drown the tattoos out and show more definition. Generally, the body is a canvas; getting ink done is like choosing art to go on your wall. It’s decoration and everybody is different. It does bring attention to the body, and historically it’s been done in bodybuilding and life. It’s just more popular and acceptable now. Being in such good shape, you must feel super fit. What other advantages are there to having the perfect body in your day to day life? I just feel better, have more energy and enjoy the process and routine. Looking at the photos of you at the IBFA Worlds in Rome earlier this year, are you happy that you have honed your body to its full potential, or are we yet to see you at your peak? Oh, yet to see me peak! Thinking ahead, I still need to work on certain areas. The judges give you feedback, and my hamstrings, gluts and lats need more work and defining. These are the areas I’ll be concentrating on as I head towards the Universe competition next July. You obviously love being a tattoo artist but it must have its ups and downs, so what are the highs and lows of your line of work? It’s great when a customer is really happy with your art, and you’ve completed a good piece. When they leave on a high it feels amazing. The downside to the industry is that anyone can practice as a tattoo artist. People don’t need qualifications, and that leads to bad practice and bad tattoos. There are no set guidelines to what is good or bad. I’d advise anyone to research artists before getting a tattoo done. Reputation is an important part of being successful and choosing good tattooists. Between running your tattoo business, training and competing, I don’t suppose you get a lot of free time. When you do get a moment to yourself, what do you like to do? Family time with my husband and son. Thursday is family day and we just chill and do normal stuff. If you hadn’t become a tattoo artist, what would you be now? I might still be a driving instructor! I qualified at 21 and I enjoyed it. The job was flexible, and allowed me to develop my artistic work. arkadia magazine

TIP OF THE POPS!! SOLAR PANELLED FUNK FROM THE DISCO DIVA OF RECYCLED JUNK. LEE HADAWAY ROCKING OUT FOR 2015!

Ethical solar-powered DJ Dynamo has been celebrating sustainably since 2007. What started life as an unusual sound system, spinning waste records on a wheelie mobile disco, has evolved into an award-winning sustainable roadshow that's serious-fun! I'm not your average DJ; I call myself an Ecotainer, combining recycling and renewable energy for education and fun. I have an alternative energy mobile disco, and educational activities that put a wacky spin on sustainability. As a 21st century version of the travelling showman, I’m utilising renewable energy instead of steam, and playing disco instead of the pipe organ. From the outset, my plan was to unlock the learning potential in Ecotainment, as well as bringing joy to the masses! Using renewable energy is elemental and doesn't have to be hi-tech. Similarly, found objects and waste materials are in abundance so there were virtually no barriers to begin with. I am still mining this rich and fertile waste-land, developing more far-out but equally down-to-earth attractions each year. Did I mention my funky threads – upcycled vintage clothing and costumes made for me by the amazing Bedlam Boudoir? After winning an 'Earth Charter' award for food waste rap (yes rap, not wrap) and workshops at primary school level, I was commissioned to produce an interactive exhibit about social justice for Avonbourne School in Bournemouth. The result was HEROES Revolution, a pedal-powered disco light and world music mix that was swamped with interest. Each event and activity is designed to be as inclusive and fun as possible, from delicious sun-baked cookies, served from a recycled solar-oven, to pedal-powered balloon popper and disco light. For us, sustainability is not just about where we source our raw materials and energy – it also keeps us grounded. We accept that we do not operate in a vacuum, every now and then offering our services for free in the community to help fund-raise at a local school or help promote a particular campaign that's close to our hearts. In return, and often quite unexpectedly, I receive support from local businesses and engineering firms – that's why we say ‘Keep it Wheel!’ The future of Ecotainment? Well, there are several up-cycled products in the pipeline, of which you have seen snippets this year, and a serious upgrade to our off-grid renewable energy system, thanks to a donation from NGPS Ltd. We are also branching out into Salisbury and South Somerset, hoping to reach over 600 schools. We are also talking to various festivals about combining elements of Ecotainment! For differing clientele you can also book me for your kids’ party, wedding or birthday. Email Lee anytime on: info@creativedynamo.net

ozley Crafts Jewellery is situated just outside the beautiful Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury and began life in 2013 with a simple suggestion from a friend who planted the seed and then stood back and watched the idea grow. The business was started by me, Shirlea Rye and, in the beginning I made jewellery with less expensive beads and glass faux pearls. However, I soon came to realize that the consistency did not meet the standard that I would expect if I were buying the finished product myself. I therefore sourced Swarovski crystals and Swarovski crystal pearls and now use these exclusively, often accompanied by semi-precious gems. Every piece is unique and using these superior materials maintains quality and consistency and allowing me to colour-match pieces to suit an outfit or wedding theme. Special occasion, prom and wedding jewellery are our specialities, although we also create jewellery for everyday wear. Chainmaille jewellery has recently been added to our inventory. This is made by my husband, Keith. Some of this jewellery also incorporates Swarovski crystals, Swarovski pearls or semi-precious gems. Bespoke pieces are always a pleasure to create and we are delighted to work alongside you, using your individual ideas. Making the jewellery gives us great pleasure and we are passionate about our work. Our pieces have been described as “exquisitely elegant” and “stunningly sophisticated” and this fills us with great pride. Seeing the pleasure that our jewellery gives to the wearer is our reward. We exhibit at numerous wedding fairs and have permanent displays of our work in various locations in Dorset and Somerset. We are always happy to display at house parties and at occasions such as ladies evenings and charity events.

Tattoo nation.. a tribal thing? Since Captain Cook’s men brought them back to Britain from Polynesia, we have been fascinated by tattoos. Fascinated by the art itself, by the way tattoos shape who we are, and by the effect they have on others. Whilst the Polynesians are usually considered the most skilful practitioners, the roots of this 5000 year-old art form spread right around the globe. Once the stuff of sideshow curiosity, tattoos soon became embedded in British naval tradition and by the middle of the 18th century most ports around the country had their own resident tattoo artist. In the 21st century, the tattoo has become the norm, as much a part of our popular culture as our choice of hairstyle, clothes or music. This has led to a demand for more and more tattoo artists, who can now be found in just about every town, and this greater accessibility has further fuelled the demand and taken the tattoo artist from back street to High Street. It is a strange paradox that something used, in many cultures, to identify criminals and slaves, should be chosen by people as a display of their freedom and individuality. However, other cultures use tattoos to signify rank, status or allegiance, so perhaps the secret of the tattoo’s popularity is that it holds a different meaning for each of us. With so many now getting inked, it is interesting to see this art form periodically return to its roots, as is the way with any fashion. There has been a huge resurgence in the demand for symbolic tattoos recently, with anchors and crosses regaining their popularity. The anchor, of course, was a favoured design among sailors (just think of Popeye), and in 1862 a Jerusalem cross was the chosen design for the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII, when he got tattooed – an event which led to nothing short of a tattoo frenzy among the British aristocracy. arkadia magazine

Work to the face and neck, where it can’t easily be hidden away, has always led to a lasting impression. Once taking the form of swallows, or ‘Cut Here’ on a dotted line around the neck, this look is now epitomised by the gang and prison tattoos of the US, using imagery and symbols with both hidden and not-so-hidden meanings. This kind of work has inspired the likes of Professor Green whose neck tattoos have spawned a generation of countless copycats. Regardless of the subject, the quality of work currently being produced by the world’s leading tattoo artists is quite remarkable and many are now considered influential artists, rather than influential tattoo artists. The removal of just one word doesn’t always make such a difference but, here, it is a huge step forward that has led to large-scale exhibitions around the world – a million miles away from the image of seedy, harbour-side tattoo parlours, with their flashbooks filled with naïve drawings. Who knows where the story of the rise and rise of the tattoo industry will go from here? As we continue to evolve as an increasingly fickle and fast-moving species, we can probably expect that the technology at the hands of the tattooist will evolve too, allowing for tattoos to be applied painlessly, and updated or removed easily. For as long as we need to be ‘happy with the skin we’re in’ and not exclusively reliant on the hand that nature dealt us, tattoos look destined to remain a part of our culture, as indelible as the ink with which they are created.

Why did you decide to bodybuild? Tell me how the process got started. I’ve always played sport – football, cricket, rugby and gymnastics. I became very good at gymnastics, becoming the Somerset under 13 champion at the age of 11. I then went into martial arts and from there into lifting weights. I see you have the most famous Mr Universe up there on the wall, Arnie Schwarzenegger. Was he a big influence on your journey? Yes, definitely, he reached great heights in his career. But the ultimate influence is Lee Priest. He started training at the age of 12, and competed at 13 and won. He then went on to win Mr Australia at 17, 18 and 19. An amazing athlete, and someone who I admire. I was working on my body from an early age too. I got into weight training at 18 and, as I had always liked the superhero look, I got into bodybuilding like a duck to water. What drives you to compete and how did that result in you owning your own gym? I’ve really only competed seriously since 2008, after being pushed by my wife. Since then I’ve competed many times in the UK and Europe. I decided, with my wife’s support, to quit my job of 11 years and go for my dream of owning my own gym so I can help others improve their fitness and health. The thing that drives me and keeps me focused is that I always want to improve and better myself. Owning my own gym, I have to keep in the best shape I can be, as my clients look to me for guidance. What does a competition vibe feel like? The feeling of going on stage was very scary at first but now I enjoy every minute of it. I still get nervous but it’s a good feeling when family and friends are shouting for you. I’m nervous and excited but, as I’ve done it so many times now, I feel confident in the process. Tell me about the commitments and sacrifices? Mainly it’s my food – eating six times a day can be a hindrance, as I have to prepare my food before I go anywhere. This Thursday I’m at a book launch, but I can’t have any drinks or eat from the buffet. The people that make the biggest sacrifices are my wife and my two daughters. We have gone on holiday to Haven and Spain when I’m six weeks from a big show, so I still get up early to do some cardio and use the gym. It’s in the last two weeks before a show that they really suffer, as I’m very focused on me. Also I’m very hungry, tired and training may be three times a day. I always try and make it up to them afterwards though. I have to give 100% commitment to do this and I have to be focused and dedicated. I know who the other athletes are, so I have to do more to beat them. What do your kids think of having Mr Universe as daddy? My kids are very proud and tell more people than anyone else that their daddy is World Champion and Mr Universe. My eightyear-old did a school project about me and took in my Overall World trophy – a Roman helmet, as this title was won in Rome. Every time I win, the girls have to take my trophy to school to show friends and teachers. How does Mr Universe chill out? Tell me something that may surprise us? I have always trained at least four times a week but when I go on holiday I don’t train at all. I take the two weeks off completely, unless we go away during my 12-week prep. When I’m not in prep mode I eat out a lot more and enjoy my food. It is hard for me to chill out as I have my business to run and its doors are open to the public 15 hours a day. When I do get a chance to chill it is just at home, having a cuddle with my wife and daughters, and watching some TV. What food do you dream about when ‘shredding’ before a comp? The food I miss the most is bread and simple things like a cheese and pickle sandwich. I don’t normally eat things like sausage rolls but in my last week I crave food like this for some reason. Where do you keep your trophies? I keep my trophies at my gym so they are on display. They would take up too much room at home! What’s the future for Mr Universe? What does the future hold for me? Well, by the time you read this I will have returned to the stage after being away for 18 months. I couldn’t train from last July to this July due to having three operations on my shoulder, following a car crash. The competition I would have done was the NAC Universe, in Hamburg. Winning this is a goal of mine as it would mean holding two universe titles from two federations – no one else has done that. I want to compete in Italy in July to win my second IBFA Mr Universe title and take my family with me to watch (and hopefully have a break afterwards). In May I am promoting a big bodybuilding fitness show and expo in Bournemouth. I will be judging national shows for the IBFA, of which I am a founder member, and pushing the federation to become the biggest in the UK. I have also been asked to do guest spots and after dinner speeches about nutrition and competing, and I also want to help others compete. Whilst I’m doing all this, I want to keep a good work-life balance with my family, as without them I couldn’t do what I do.

a fresh approach at the Yellow bicycle cafe Owned by Steve and Ali Bell, the Yellow Bicycle Café opened in Blandford's bustling 'café district' in March 2014, with a menu based around homemade and freshly prepared food, as well as wonderful homemade cakes and great local teas and coffees. The vision for this vibrant couple has been to create a fun, informal café, offering something a little different without being too 'off the wall weird'. The simple, yet interesting menu, reflecting their taste and style, has gone down a storm with regulars and new visitors alike, accompanied by the cool urban chic design and the chilled ambience. Steve previously owned a café in South Wales as well as an event catering business, and has cooked on BBC Radio Wales and appeared on BBC2's 'One Man and His Camper van'. He also presented a cooker y programme on community radio from his previous café. This is Ali's first venture into the café world after 20 years in the toy industr y, however she brings with her a talent for baking fantastic cakes and a keen eye for the toys that are available to purchase from the shop – they think of ever ything! A superb range of coffee is available, made from a selection of Dorset Coffee Company beans and complemented by loose leaf teas from Comins Tea House in Sturminster Newton. Hot chocolates are made simply by melting Belgian chocolate in milk and there is the addition of a new range of homemade flavours and syrups too. The menu offers something a little different from the usual café fare, with homemade flatbreads as well as their own baked beans ser ved on their own toasted bread. The Yellow Bicycle has also become renowned locally for its signature Triple Layered Luscious Lemon Cake, a homemade cake that simply has to be tried. The line-up also includes Upside Down Plum Cake, as well as homemade teacakes and scones (including Ali's fast-becoming-famous cheese scone sticks). In the summer, cream teas include the café's own strawberr y jam. The café is a family-friendly place, with highchairs and baby changing facilities, and the open kitchen provides a fun and friendly atmosphere. The Yellow Bicycle Café has all of the charm you'd expect of this beautiful town.

Can you see the a'tract'ion? Words Danny Nash Images Kris Dutson With a background in farming, and having once owned a very successful fencing company, Colin Foot stood every chance of keeping his toe in the agricultural scene. He’ll tell you that he’s retired now but, in fact, he’s as busy as ever thanks to a wealth of village and charity activities including an annual event that Colin and Jan run in their little village, which attracts more than 2,000 folk, raising over £13,000 for Fortuneswell Cancer Trust! It was in 1997 that Colin purchased two old tractors and set about making them good. He now has a collection in the region of 25 plus tractors, and when we say ‘making them good’, this boy don't do it 'by arf'... Having the pleasure of looking around a serious 'hobbyist's' pride and joy is a day to behold, especially when it becomes an education too! It’s fascinating to hear of the 'David Brown' he has sitting in the barn, and the whole 'Brown-Ferguson' story. I was surprised by some of the facts that I didn’t know, like the fact that David Brown saw a classified advertisement in The Times in 1947, offering a ‘High Class Motor Business’ for sale. Brown soon acquired Aston Martin for £20,500 and, in the following year, Lagonda for £52,500. The David Brown years would lead to the legendary Aston Martin DB series. Little nuggets of information like this just make the day even more fascinating. He has tractors bought by Jan for his 70th, often pulling them upside down from entrances to fields and driving them straight home (on the back of a trailer of course). Once home, he sets to work returning these rustic classics to their former glory and making each and every engine in his stable a thing of pure beauty. His motto, 'Find ‘em, get ‘em home, restore ‘em' keeps him going, although they are getting rarer to find, so the ones he uses to pull his grandsons’ sledges around in the snow and the Massey Ferguson he is currently rebuilding now keep him living life to the max. And he’ll stop at nothing to get the job done, making obsolete parts from scratch if he has to! With a canny smile and a suck on his well chewed pipe, Colin gives a little laugh and says: “It wouldn't be so much fun if it were easy.” Amazing, really, what you can find in folks’ back gardens. This is what makes Dorset, and the folk who live in it, just so dang special! arkadia magazine

Dramatic light and atmosphere are what feeds Paul Dolman’s imagination...

Masterclass.

There are certain artists we've come across that make this look easy; Paul Dolman is one of these. The work he produces could fill 15 pages of our magazine, and still we'd be happy. We spoke with the gentle mannered artist, and he gave us an insight into his world. Paul was born in Derbyshire and moved to Devon where he collected a series of awards as a junior artist. His first job was as a pottery designer and he quickly moved on to become an illustrator for the South Devon Scene, a local newspaper based in the internationally renowned art college at Dartington Hall near Totnes. Paul became an immediate success and was commissioned to produce pen and ink drawings for clients in the publishing industry. In more recent years Paul has moved towards oil paintings, taking inspiration from the views he enjoys from his long distance walking. Paul's high standards of work have achieved recognition for quality, clarity and popularity amongst local people in Dorset and those visiting the area. Dramatic light and atmosphere are what feeds Paul Dolman’s imagination as he moves around the Dorset coast line. Paul is passionate about painting and his specialty is creating wonderfully atmospheric oil landscapes that are vibrant and zinging with light. Paul recently spent a month in Mauritius, commissioned to paint various scenes of Mauritius in workshops to help other painters. With his paintings hanging in New York, Nantucket, Australia, New Zealand and all around the world, you can still catch Paul demonstrating his art, and enjoying his painting at Avon Beach most weekends in the summer, where he displays and sells his work.

Warm words A New R estorative Br ew in Blandfor d

The latest addition to Blandford Forum’s growing café culture

- Beatons Tearooms and Bookshop - are ‘ brewing up steaming cups of loose leaf tea’. We took a peek at the sensitive restoration of Greyhound House, one of Blandford’s most famous ‘Bastard Brothers’ buildings. Stepping into an airy elegant space we chatted to House Poet, Liz Darcy Jones (Liz writes a piece for each new Beatons) at their ‘Open House’ launch event. Beatons’ interior takes its inspiration from famous local society and royal photographer Sir Cecil Beaton who lived in Ashcombe and Broad Chalke, Wiltshire. However, the idea of putting books, fine coffees and loose leaf tea together is entirely founder and MD Patrick Duffy’s. Beatons’ success in Tisbury convinced Patrick the concept would work well elsewhere and Blandford is a sister operation, with franchises ‘brewing’ in Chester and Surrey. Sparkling jars of loose leaf tea stand to attention on pristine white shelves which also hold new Villeroy and Boch bespoke china, while huge glass domes boast home made cakes like Beatons’ ‘signature carrot cake’ - something of a talking point - which we all enjoyed sampling. But it’s not only tea and cake on offer. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch and everything in-between seven days a week, as well as luxurious High Tea served on glass cake stands. And Beatons brand of ‘gracious hospitality’ comes to your table whether you’re sipping on champagne or warming soup. But don’t be naughty! The old bank safe has been retained nicknamed by Liz ‘the naughty room’. Perhaps that’s where they keep those naughty cakes!

Chasing rainbows Jodie Whyte

I’ve always noticed detail. Frequently called a daydreamer, Dolly to my pops. Teachers would say I needed to concentrate more and take my head out of the clouds. I couldn’t; I was too busy watching the world around me: people, their interactions, pattern, light, shapes and other nuances that make the world go round. I didn’t take a straight and narrow path in my youth. I wandered, and still do, and that’s how I photograph. In the late 1990s I trained in film and media production and over the last 15 years have worked in Dorset as a photographer, community filmmaker and youth mentor. My experiences are through a lens, which can be a balancing act for photographers as there is a danger that you exist less in the real world. But, it’s a compulsion. Over the last few years I have stretched myself and taken my Dorset soul out of the comfort of the coastline and rolling hills, to parts that have inspired some of the world’s best street photographers. It wasn’t enough for me to look at prints or books; I wanted to wander in the places that fired the likes of Vivian Maier, Martin Parr and William Klein, who are a huge inspiration. These people celebrate the diverse ‘normalities’ of life, through humour, observation and ultimately, noticing.

arkadia magazine

The wanderer in me has taken me into street photography. It sits well with my curious nature – my family would say ‘nosey’, I can live with that. I photograph people, or evidence of them. Cities like New York, Las Vegas and London are just as rich as Dorset, just in different ways. The light falls differently overseas, in cities. People move faster, slower, and together it sets my heart racing.

W

Technology has progressed and accessibility leads to gratification for many photographers. It is something I am also grateful for, but it does not drive my reason to photograph. I rely on luck and faith that people, when they think they are unnoticed, dance in their lives like no one is watching.

Dramatic Delights... The Horse with the Red Umbrella tea room was opened ten years ago in the heart of Dorchester’s bustling High West Street. We discover the story behind this popular pit stop with the help of owner, John Fiori.

John has worked in the catering industry since leaving school, including seven years spent at prestigious establishments, Claridge’s and The Savoy Hotel before owning his own café for 20 years. John and his wife moved to Dorset to be near friends, buying The Horse with the Red Umbrella in nearby Dorchester. You can’t help but notice the bold exterior as you pass by, but it as you enter that the full charm and intrigue of the building really hits you. John spent a fascinating 18 months, with the help of Dr John Travell, delving into the building’s previous existence as the Loyalty Theatre, discovering its links with the renowned actor Edmund Kean, not to mention Dorchester’s famous literary son, Thomas Hardy. They even had Lord and Lady Fellowes of West Stafford unveil the new history board. Having spent much longer than the three or four weeks he anticipated it would take to investigate the building’s past, John said: “I have always wanted to know the story of The Horse with the Red Umbrella and its history and I think this does tell the story. It is marvellous having lost it that, for all our sorrow, at least we know where it was and now we can remember its story and remember the people of Dorchester enjoying theatre at that time.” He added: “It’s marvellous having lost it that, for all our sorrow, at least we know where it was and now we can remember its story and remember the people of Dorchester enjoying theatre at that time. The Loyalty Theatre opened in 1828, with the final curtain closing some 15 years later. The building was taken over by Godwin’s Glass and China Stores and was used as a warehouse store before it became The Horse with the Red Umbrella in 1970. The fascinating name was the title of the last production staged at the Loyalty Theatre before it closed in 1843. The establishment is steeped in history and gives a very friendly welcome with home cooked pastries to die for, and amazing service. Whether you’re after a place to while away an hour or two, or have an interest in the theatre, then this is a ‘must see’ spot for all Dorchester visitors!

THE MYSORE PRACTICE ASHTANGA YOGA Mark Winterburn teaches and practices Ashtanga Yoga. He is the founding Director of Dorset Yoga Centre and is now starting a 5-day Mysore program right in the heart of Dorchester. The Mysore practice is the place to learn and practice traditional Ashtanga yoga - this is authentic, accessible and affordable Ashtanga.

WHAT IS YOGA? Yoga is an ancient method of self-investigation that originated within the wisdom traditions of India. The sages who first taught these practices demonstrated that by using our body, breath and mind in a particular manner, we may find harmony and strength within ourselves. In this fast-paced world we easily become detached from our bodies, lost in the world of worries and stress, and find ourselves rushing forward in an effort to keep up. Yoga pulls us back into our bodies, and teaches us an embodied awareness that keeps us healthy, filled with a sense of well-being, and a gives us a renewed ability to remain aware and in the present moment. It is a holistic practice that supports all other aspects of life, and its myriad of benefits are reported regularly in mainstream, scientific findings. WHAT IS ASHTANGA YOGA? Ashtanga yoga in particular is a dynamic, structured, and intelligent approach to the practice of yoga, and is comprised of both practical and philosophical components. Traditionally, Ashtanga yoga is taught in the Mysore style. WHAT IS MYSORE STYLE? Mysore style is the traditional form of teaching the Ashtanga yoga method as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois In Mysore, India. In a Mysore class, new students are instructed individually, and taught small amounts of a sequence of poses that increase each day according to the capacity of the student. When practiced in a consistent manner, this method of yoga will strengthen, purify and align the body, steady the nervous system through even breathing and give equilibrium to the mind. When the initial poses of the sequence have been committed to memory – which does not take very long – new postures are introduced, adding to the sequence when the student is ready. The teacher is present to give help in the poses as needed, and to answer questions that may arise. Mysore style is a simple, effective and ancient method of learning yoga. A beginner can expect their first class to last about 20-30 minutes. The practice will gradually increase in length up to about an hour and a half.

Naturealwayswears thecoloursofthespirit. It was all looking pretty good. A Charted Surveyor, 30 years old and a blustering career ahead of me. But there’s only so much angry email tennis a man can handle. It was during such a rally between an irate client and a furious contractor that I squeaked back in my chair and pondered to myself, ‘Hmmm… why isn’t there a Dorset dry gin?’ They do say stress can lead you to drink.

arkadia magazine

The inspiration for Conker Spirit, Dorset’s first gin distillery, was born; an independent, small batch distillery, handcrafting Dorset Dry Gin using local botanicals and traditional methods, without the shortcuts. We would be the community spirit, minutes from Bournemouth’s High Street with our doors wide open to the public. That’s the spirit! They were big plans. I had no experience, just heavy doses of blind optimism and an unrelenting belief that this could be something pretty special. Six months on from that gin-soaked light bulb moment, I handed my notice in to my jaw-dropped boss and took the plunge to launch Dorset’s first gin distillery. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done. For me, it was essential we did everything ourselves. I didn’t want Conker Spirit to be yet another gin proclaiming to be a small batch craft distillery when in fact their gin is designed and made by a distillery hundreds of miles away. Instead, we’re the real deal… The botanical foragers, the bottlers, the label sticker-on-ers and, most importantly, the distillers. The world of distilling was completely new to me, but ignorance can be a powerful thing. It forces you to take a fresh approach and look at things from a new perspective, without preconception. This was my launch-pad for creating something new and exciting. After all, I wanted to produce a genuine alternative to the mob of London dry gins out there. So whilst still remaining a classic gin that’s true to juniper, we were to create a Dorset dry that’s defined by the flavours of this beautiful county. So I started from scratch, right from the very beginning. I taught myself everything there is to know about distilling, got myself licenced on a small still and started distilling botanical recipes after work. I have to admit that in the beginning, most of my creations were pretty rough (these made excellent presents for friends). But milligram by milligram, the recipe was slowly refined, replacing traditional gin botanicals with those that can be found growing across Dorset such as elderberries, samphire and hand-picked gorse flowers from the New Forest. The result of our obsessive tinkering and uncompromising focus on quality is a gin so smooth that it can be sipped straight. A botanical balance so refined that no one botanical spoils the show by shouting above the rest. The Dorset Dry has a refreshing and bright nose, a long complex and well-balanced mouthfeel and a barely perceptible alcohol bite. Mix at your pleasure, but this gin can definitely hold its own. Just ten months after handing my notice in as a Chartered Surveyor, the Conker Spirit distillery in Southbourne will be ready to stock Dorset’s wines shops, bars and restaurants in the New Year. We can’t wait to welcome you through our doors. That’s the Spirit.

Travels of an English Garden Designer. Destination, Vietnam.

No glass houses here – throw all the stones you want! …but that’s the feeling you get in Hanoi, one of being in a huge greenhouse, because all around you are plants, many of which would shiver to death in our climate, growing in profusion. The Vietnamese are pragmatic people and the recognition of botanical names doesn’t rate highly in their daily lives so I fear I must leave you wondering as to their identities – Linnaeus would not have approved! Transport too in Hanoi, now that is an experience never forgotten! Never mind bicycles in Beijing, they are as nothing, compared with the number of scooters and motor bikes in Hanoi. As a western pedestrian, crossing the road requires courage and a blind faith in their free-for-all, chaotic traffic system, which somehow does work. Provided, that is, once you begin your giant step for mankind, you neither stop, hesitate, or turn back, this ensures the tsunami of traffic parts around you like the Red Sea and in true biblical fashion, one feels a quick prayer offered while en route can only help! arkadia magazine

01305 751230 or 07808 471937 www.sarahtalbotgardendesign.co.uk

But, as with all commerce, transportation is key and getting your flowers from the market back to the shop – cunningly disguised as the ground floor of your house or a few square metres of pavement – requires ingenuity and above all, good balance. You see every conceivable design of two-wheeled vehicle, piled high not only with the most beautiful cut flowers I’ve ever seen, but with an invisible driver enveloped by his cargo, only to realise there are two, no three, small children stuffed in amongst the foliage – and, oh yes, the rickety wooden trailer with a 4m ladder and a fridge on board, is part of the same convoy too! Lovers of rules, regulations and comforting western safety nets, this is not for you – unless that is, you are open to persuasion. But, if you can zone out the noise and look past the fact that in UK terms probably 95% of drivers are committing an offence, you begin to see a country that historically, has succeeded against all odds and become a humming, vibrant kaleidoscope of life and energy, with a strong sense of family unity. Eating, now that’s a family event in Vietnam; you can have delicious and ridiculously cheap, street food – best not to think too deeply about the hygiene – or a truly global choice of menus. I sampled, well I’m not too sure what, to be honest, at a modest little venue known locally as Train Tracks. Yes, you’ve guessed! We dined outside under a creaking canopy, at a table set on a narrow, raised pavement 3 metres away from a single railway track. I had been forewarned about the overnight train to Sapa and duly covered my ears when it rumbled slowly by, giving a deafening honk as it drew level with us. Numerous carriages passed, the old fashioned wooden bunks warmly illuminated by soft lights, followed by the dining cars with beautifully laid tables, then a whiff of diesel was all that remained and it was safe to resume eating. And now, it’s home time and I’m saying my goodbyes to an extraordinary country and returning to the familiar rolling hills of Dorset – but only till the next time!

Hi Christo, apart from your fantastic skills on the tattoo scene, we wanted to talk to you regarding your art. Your design skills have been set aside from your ‘work’ days and your technical skills are now being used much more creatively; your World is now a more spiritual place it would seem, where did it all start for you design wise? More spiritual? Yeah I suppose so. Well as an artist, I guess you already have first-hand experience in being the creator of your creature, and in spite of all the fuss you get about the finished creature, what appeals to me most is being the creator and the process of creation itself. I'm sure the amount of time I’ve spent looking at a piece of paper, would probably shock me, but it’s a form of addictive meditation that’s kept me calm and sane until now! Instead of studying the arts, I decided to study Visual Communication, and all the theoretical jargon that came with it, to understand more about the philosophy of visuals, and how they're used to promote advertisements, propaganda, programming or just plain emotional manipulation. Since then I’ve been hooked. In regard to your work, the inspiration is clear to some, whereas others will just see a fantastic kaleidoscopic world of colour; are you aiming to send a message with your creative? No, not really. When you’re trying to intentionally send a message through your work, you kind of leave the art side and join the propaganda side – whether your message is positive or negative. After the moment of creation is done, and my fun is over, all I’m left with is the creature, right? So that creature, ‘art’, like everything in this reality, is what it is, and it’s only in the eye and mind of the beholder that it becomes something, whether it’s positive or not, ugly or pretty, good or bad.

Amen brother. We speak to a

young guy with an extraordinary mind – welcome to the world of

WORDS DAN NASH IMAGES JODIE WHYTE

What inspires you to put these fantastic 3-D pieces together and do you wish you could get the chance to really show the pieces in the full 360 degree composite? I love creating the weird and the surreal, and blending it into the real – almost in a way that the subject matter, even if alien, becomes plausible. I'm inspired not only by my own experiences, but also the tales, arts and philosophies of those who dare experience what others are too afraid of. I certainly would love to see them as a ‘real life’ composite objects and I’ve been asked this many times before actually. You'd definitely loose the ambiance and environment, but I'm sure they'd look amazing. What do you enjoy more, is it the creativity or the message you’re sending? Definitely the creativity. Is this work comparative to the drawing and the tattooing? You’re a talented guy, do you get more of a rush on a PC or on a person’s flesh? Well, each have their benefits of course. I love tattooing dearly as it puts me in touch with loads of weird and interesting people, and it goes deeper than you can imagine. On the other hand, my own 3-D work gives me the opportunity to create straight for the mind with no external influences – it’s purely mine, like an opinion.

Lucan Art

Lucan Art Penmanship at its finest Mirek Lucan is an artist, designer and photographer specialising in live art, murals and street-style illustration – there’s certainly a lot going on in this young man’s mind, world and canvases! We ask this clever chappie to explain, in his own words, what it's all about and where he is heading… Having spent the last 15 years working predominantly as a technical illustrator – mainly cars, bikes, boats and architecture – I am now taking this skill and applying it to projects and murals on a much larger scale. Working as a live artist at events also allows me to provoke a reaction from the crowd and on many projects I touch on issues from around the world, whether in a political way or filled with humour. Apart from fusing illustration with street art, I am also working on creating bespoke walls and installations for private clients and companies, both indoors and out. I also provide visual facilitation for businesses, councils and local governments on a national scale. I’m available to hire for live illustration at meetings, bringing a new, creative and often very surprising element, where participants leave with a lasting visual memory and graphics to use in their future presentations.
