In June, we will all have the opportunity to attend the most successful annual meeting in the country. The association joins the Judicial Council once again in Hot Springs June 1114 for our annual event. The theme this year is “Digging Deeper Into Technology and Law” and David

Fuqua has done an unsurpassed job in acting as our annual meeting chair. We have a great line-up of speakers with topics focused on how technology has affected the practice of law, including cyber-crimes, ethics in social media, privacy law, and using technology in the courtroom. One of the most publicized trials in 2013 was the George Zimmerman case. This year, Mark O’Mara, who successfully defended Zimmerman, will be the keynote speaker. Like Jose Baez’s presentation last year, we expect another standing-room-only crowd for this two-hour presentation. After lunch, Mr. O’Mara will participate in a panel discussion on race dialogue in the United States. Marie-Bernarde Miller, Chair of the Board of Governors, will lead the

panel, which includes John Walker, Ed Bethune and local broadcaster Vickie Newton who covered the Zimmerman trial. The family law track is organized for Wednesday, June 11, to kick off the meeting along with CNA on Wednesday morning. We are very fortunate that our criminal law track on Thursday will include both Arkansas U.S. attorneys and an F.B.I. agent who will discuss cybercrime. Will Jones from the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office will speak on cyberporn investigations and prosecutions. Joshua Gilliland, nationally recognized thought leader on electronic discovery, provides two hours of expert advice on social media and the law on Thursday afternoon. The popular ABOTA trial practice

demonstration takes place on Friday, June 13. Steve Quattlebaum has done a wonderful job bringing this program to us again this year. In addition to the CLE, the traditional social events are the highlight of the meeting. This is your opportunity to renew old friendships and acquaintances and make new ones. Wednesday evening we will meet for a reception at the Convention Center prior to the Arkansas Bar Foundation Fellows’ Dinner. One of the most time-honored events of the week is the Friday Firm’s annual reception in the lobby of the Arlington Hotel on Thursday afternoon. The week winds up with another reception at the Convention Center Friday afternoon followed by a half day of CLE on Saturday. I expect to see you there!

welcome Welcome to the 116th annual meeting of the Arkansas Bar Association. You are a part of our long tradition of gathering in Hot Springs for learning and fellowship. I am honored to be the chair of the 2014 Annual Meeting and appreciate the confidence that President Simpson has placed in me. Our theme for this meeting is “Digging Deeper Into Technology and Law.” Technology is the constant dynamic force influencing the practice of law today. We all experience the demands placed upon us to understand how to use technology as lawyers, how

technology impacts the gathering and presentation of evidence, and the demands clients have for lawyers to understand and use technology. We will look at the impact of technology on privacy and the jurisprudence of privacy. The ABOTA trial practice track will include technology in the courtroom. We have a criminal law track this year that will include cybercrime information and other presentations on social media and e-discovery. Mark O’Mara, the attorney who obtained an acquittal in the George Zimmerman trial, will be our keynote speaker and will participate in a panel discussion with distinguished members of the bar on the present state of race dialogue in our nation. Retired U.S. Circuit Judge Boyce F. Martin, Jr., explores how individuals protect their privacy in the constantly changing world of technology. Dr. Don Lloyd Cook covers national trends, breach notification laws, and common (and potentially litigious) mistakes that your clients may be making with regards to privacy breaches.
