Why Awareness Matters Greetings from the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House!
Seven months ago I began my duties as the new Executive Director of the Arkansas Alumni Association. In that short time I have met hundreds of devoted alumni and friends, travelled to numerous cities, conducted retreats from the Alumni Board and the staff on campus, and done a lot of listening - to the Board of Directors, campus leaders, AAA staff, other alumni volunteers and stakeholders – to hear their thoughts on the Association. Without question, it has been a transformational, exhilarating, and eye-opening experience. Why? Because the Alumni Association is poised to be the best alumni association in the country. We currently have a program with financial strength, a membership program in the top 10 nationally, and broad volunteer engagement from the most passionate alumni anywhere. Our scholarship efforts award 800+ scholarships each year, and the AAA staff is talented, dedicated and hard working. From my view there are only a few things to focus on as we move forward. · Build awareness for what we do – Tell everyone what we do, how we do it and how GOOD we are at getting it done. · Adapt for a younger generation – Graduating classes are getting larger, communicating differently, and needing more from us. We need to adapt to meet their needs. · Assess to improve – We can’t rest on our laurels. We will regularly assess all areas of the Association - marketing, programming, board development and management, financial administration, campus and volunteer relations, as well as our role in the campaign. This assessment will provide important information on which we can build a strategic plan for the association that will guide us for the coming years. As Alumni Association members, you know already what I am discovering more each day. The University of Arkansas is an incredibly special place that has provided a lifetime of memories to thousands of alumni and their families. Devoted Razorback
