RESEARCHING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
5
Professor Argelia Lorence is the co-principal investigator for a NSF project studying heat stress on rice and wheat. Her work provides in-depth learning opportunities for 40 A-State undergraduates, and may lead to identifying grains that can thrive in a warmer environment. Dr. Michele Reba, with the USDA, has worked for years with A-State to develop strategies to manage the precious water resources needed for rice production, and was recently named the Researcher of the Year by the Arkansas Rice Federation at its 25th annual conference.
This photograph of the Earth’s surface, captured at an ABS record altitude, was taken by a camera onboard a high-altitude balloon launched by A-State students.
LAUNCH PAD Professors Tillman Kennon and Ross Carroll worked along with A-State undergraduate students in a NASA project that flew a high-altitude balloon into the path of the 2017 total solar eclipse, collecting video, photographs and scientific data. The Arkansas BalloonSAT team, which includes students, has launched and flown 62 high altitude balloons from Arkansas and Missouri in the last 16 years. In 2024, they’ll be back at it — chasing the eclipse right here in Jonesboro.
Rooted in Research AN INTEGRAL PART OF ARKANSAS STATE Each year, A-State holds its annual student research event, Create@STATE. Students are encouraged to research any topic they desire and develop creative solutions under the advisement of an A-State mentor. Grants for extended research, as well as professional careers, can be launched here! Check out the Create@STATE podcast or YouTube channel for more information.

WELCOME TO YOUR NEW COMFORT ZONE!
It’s a big leap to college, but you can look forward to a great landing in one of our modern residence halls. Residence halls are among the best places to meet friends, find study partners and be close to all the activities and resources on campus. All of our freshman residence options are suite-style, which means you’ll never have to wait around in your flip-flops for an empty shower. It’s more than housing…it’s home!

Students with the 7-Day meal plan may enter the Acansa Dining Hall unlimited times each day of the week. The number after the “+” indicates flex dollars. Flex dollars operate like a declining balance account that can be used at any of our dining venues, including Acansa Dining Hall, the Food Court, Starbucks, the Campus Store and Cafe a la Cart. The purchase of any of the meal plans is dependent on number of years enrolled in college. Unused flex dollars will carry over from fall to spring if a spring board plan is purchased, but they must be used by the end of the spring semester to avoid forfeiture.

Studies show students who live on campus make better grades, are more involved in campus activities, and are less likely to drop out of college.
N O S H O R TA G E O F D I N I N G O P T I O N S From salad to dessert and everything in between to keep your belly happy, the newly renovated Acansa Dining Hall is a favorite spot on campus for students. We even have the student favorite: Chick-fil-A. There is no shortage of other eateries around campus, too: Starbucks Coffee for your morning caffeine buzz, Einstein Bros. Bagels for all of your bakery and deli needs, and SimplyTo-Go for something quick to eat while on the move. ENGLISH LEARNING ACADEMY ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Learn the English skills necessary for academic and social success through expert classroom instruction and exciting programs and activities offered. As an ELA student, students will have free and unlimited access to all university services and facilities with your paid enrollment, including recreational facilities, student health facilities, the library, email, computer access, and student organizations and clubs.
DIRECT ADMIT TO A-STATE You will not need to submit any test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS in order to attend academic programs at A-State once you successfully complete the ESL program. To be directly admitted, you must complete the final level of the program with 80 percent or higher proficiency for undergraduate admission, or 90 percent or higher proficiency, and receive a passing grade for graduate admission.
ACTIVITIES The English Learning Academy also offers activities for students to be involved in both on campus and around Jonesboro. Activities include sports tournaments, game nights, movie nights and trips to the farmers market. Each semester, at least one trip is made to Memphis to visit the International Market, where students can often find ingredients and foods from their home countries that aren’t always available around Jonesboro.
CURRICULUM The ELA program consists of five levels plus a foundation level for students with little or no English experience. Each level focuses on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as pronunciation and grammar. Students are expected to complete homework assignments, quizzes, exams and participate for a final grade. Oral communication courses will also require students to do oral presentations and writing courses will require students to keep a writing journal.

One of the largest urban parks in the state, Craighead Forest Park is an oasis of mountain biking and trail running. The 692-acre park includes a 60-acre lake for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. You can even overnight camp in the – wait for it – Craighead Forest. The park has helped host the Jonesboro Open, which is a part of the Disc Golf Pro Tour, three times on its disc golf course.

From the Turtle Creek area near Red Wolf Boulevard to the newly expanding Uptown district along Caraway, Jonesboro mixes the national brands you expect with the fun and funky local boutiques that give any university town its flavor. Stretching south toward the area locals call “the old fairgrounds,” Jonesboro is the hub for shopping in the NEA. And if you can’t find it here . . . just turn the page for more about our region.
GEOGRAPHICALLY
We have a lot in Jonesboro, but nearby there is even more. If you feel the urge to get out of town from time to time, A-State is right in the middle of four major metro areas and surrounded by some of the greatest natural attractions like the Buffalo River National Park, the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, and some of the world’s greatest fishing areas.
