Professor Argelia Lorence is the co-principal investigator for a NSF project studying heat stress on rice and wheat. Her work provides in-depth learning opportunities for 40 A-State undergraduates, and may lead to identifying grains that can thrive in a warmer environment. Dr. Michele Reba, with the USDA, has worked for years with A-State to develop strategies to manage the precious water resources needed for rice production, and was recently named the Researcher of the Year by the Arkansas Rice Federation at its 25th annual conference.

AN INTEGRAL PART OF ARKANSAS STATE
Professors Tillman Kennon and Ross Carroll worked along with A-State undergraduate students in a NASA project that flew a high-altitude balloon into the path of the 2017 total solar eclipse, collecting video, photographs and scientific data. The Arkansas BalloonSAT team, which includes students, has launched and flown 62 high altitude balloons from Arkansas and Missouri in the last 16 years. In 2024, they’ll be back at it — chasing the eclipse right here in Jonesboro.
Each year, A-State holds its annual student research event, Create@STATE. Students are encouraged to research any topic they desire and develop creative solutions under the advisement of an A-State mentor. Grants for extended research, as well as professional careers, can be launched here! Check out the Create@STATE podcast or YouTube channel for more information.

The purchase of any of the meal plans is dependent on number of years enrolled in college. Unused flex dollars will carry over from fall to spring if a spring board plan is purchased, but they must be used by the end of the spring semester to avoid forfeiture.
It’s a big leap to college, but you can look forward to a great landing in one of our modern residence halls. Residence halls are among the best places to meet friends, find study partners and be close to all the activities and resources on campus. All of our freshman residence options are suite-style, which means you’ll never have to wait around in your flip-flops for an empty shower. It’s more than housing…it’s home!
WELCOME TO YOUR NEW COMFORT ZONE!
AState.edu/Dining ... From salad to dessert and everything in between to keep your belly happy, the newly renovated Acansa Dining Hall is a favorite spot on campus for students. If you are in the mood for something else, try the food court. We have sushi, smoothies, mac-and-cheese bowls, grilled-to-order fare, and the college staple – hot, melty, cheesy pizza. We even have the student favorite: Chick-fil-A. There is no shortage of other eateries around campus, too: Starbucks Coffee for your morning caffeine buzz, Einstein Bros. Bagels for all of your bakery and deli needs, and SimplyTo-Go for something quick to eat while on the move. Our Campus Store is always stocked for whatever snack you are craving and Howl On Wheels is A-State’s very own food truck with plenty of delectable delights. Visit the website to explore meal plans and get ready to chow down. NO SHORTAGE OF DINING OPTIONS Studies show students who live on campus make better grades, are more involved in campus activities, and are less likely to drop out of college. 16

ENGLISH LEARNING ACADEMY
12
Learn the English skills necessary for academic and social success through expert classroom instruction and exciting programs and activities offered. As an ELA student, students will have free and unlimited access to all university services and facilities with your paid enrollment, including recreational facilities, student health facilities, the library, email, computer access, and student organizations and clubs.
DIRECT ADMIT TO A-STATE
You will not need to submit any test scores such as TOEFL or IELTS in order to attend academic programs at A-State once you successfully complete the ESL program. To be directly admitted, you must complete the final level of the program with 80 percent or higher proficiency for undergraduate admission, or 90 percent or higher proficiency, and receive a passing grade for graduate admission.
The ELA program consists of five levels plus a foundation level for students with little or no English experience. Each level focuses on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as pronunciation and grammar. Students are expected to complete homework assignments, quizzes, exams and participate for a final grade. Oral communication courses will also require students to do oral presentations and writing courses will require students to keep a writing journal.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
ACTIVITIES
The English Learning Academy also offers activities for students to be involved in both on campus and around Jonesboro. Activities include sports tournaments, game nights, movie nights and trips to the farmers market. Each semester, at least one trip is made to Memphis to visit the International Market, where students can often find ingredients and foods from their home countries that aren’t always available around Jonesboro.
CURRICULUM
We have it here... One square mile at A-State serves as the heart of culture, tourism and sports for Northeast Arkansas including: Red Wolves football at Centennial Bank Stadium, baseball at Tomlinson Stadium, concerts and more in First National Bank Arena, Bradbury Art Museum, Judd Hill Farmers’ Market, A-State Museum, Red Wolf Convention Center, and Fowler Center, the premier performing arts center. WHETHER YOU’RE ON CAMPUS OR OUTAND-ABOUT INJONESBORO, YOU’LL FIND PLENTY TO KEEP YOU ENTERTAINED. White table dining? Brunch? Music venues? Ramen shops? Student lofts? Brew pub? It is all in downtown Jonesboro. There is eclectic shopping from custom soaps to casual women’s clothing, to the headquarters store of one of the state’s prime outdoor lifestyle companies. Along with community festivals, downtown Jonesboro hosts special events for students such as the annual welcome back block party. When you live on campus, there aren’t many reasons to go anywhere else. In addition to concerts and sporting events, you can work out at the Red W.O.L.F. Center, get all-you-can eat at the recently renovated “Caf,” and ride to class on the PAC Path trails. 21 DOWNTOWN 4 MILESSQUARE ...OF ANYTHING BUT JONES-BORING 23 OH, DID WE FORGET TO MENTION THE CITY OF JONESBORO’S LATEST HIGH-PRIORITY PROJECT: THE A-STATE TO DOWNTOWN BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAIL?
From the Turtle Creek shopping area and all the usual national brands to fun and funky local boutiques that feature the latest fashion trends, you can find most of what you are looking for in the growing shopping areas located near Red Wolf Boulevard and what the locals call “the old fairgrounds.” And if you cannot find it, just turn the page for more about the region.
One of the largest urban parks in the state, Craighead Forest Park is an oasis of mountain biking and trail running. The 692-acre park includes a 60-acre lake for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. You can even overnight camp in the – wait for it – Craighead Forest. The park has helped host the Jonesboro Open, which is a part of the Disc Golf Pro Tour, three times on its disc golf course.
