Little Rock Live Music Guide There are many places to hear live music

in the greater Little Rock area. For a more comprehensive listing of bars, check page 14. Here is a list of some of the venues that either have live music three nights a week or more or host the larger concerts in the area.

The Afterthought This cozy café and bar is one of the best places in town to hear an eclectic mix of live music: blues, folk, rock and especially jazz. It’s connected to the classy “southern bistro,” Vieux Carre and is located in the heart of Hillcrest, one of the city’s best neighborhoods. Musicians tend to be local, but some touring performers do come through from time to time. The Afterthought has free live music Monday through Wednesday, with a rotating schedule of jazz musicians every Monday, a Tuesday jam session hosted by pianist Carl Mouton and a Wednesday open mic night. From Thursday to Saturday, different musicians perform, and the cover varies – usually from $7-$10. There’s also a Sunday jazz brunch each week, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Cajun’s Wharf Cajun’s Wharf is a huge restaurant, bar and live music venue offering great seafood and a

variety of live music every night of the week except Sunday. Weekly events include deals such as Wine Down Wednesday, with $4 glasses of vino and The Big Swinging Deck Party every Thursday, with music on the deck. Before 8:30 p.m., there’s no cover, but after that it’s $5.

Cornerstone Pub & Grill This Argenta staple offers tasty pub grub and drinks, as well as karaoke on Tuesdays and live hip-hop, folk, rock and blues on other nights. It’s a smoking venue, so it’s 21-and-older only.

Cregeen’s Irish Pub Another reliable Argenta restaurant and bar, Cregeen’s lives up to its designation, boasting an array of imported beers and true Irish pub décor. There’s live music on the weekends, and it’s a great place to get a bite or a drink before or after a Travelers game or an event at Verizon Arena.

Discovery While this massive dance club is only open on Saturday night, you can rest assured that you can cram in more partying on that one night than most places do in a week. Discovery is open waaaay late – until 5 a.m., to be precise. In several giant rooms, you’ll hear DJs spinning a variety of dance music, spanning styles and decades, and you can catch drag performances as well. Triniti, its sister club located next door, offers a similar experience on Friday nights.

Downtown Music Hall This former storefront on Capitol Avenue has live

music most nights out of the week, tending toward the loud and heavy end of things. It’s a regular stop for some of the best touring underground metal bands in the country, and also hosts hip-hop, the monthly electro dance party Cool Shoes and head-to-head video game tournaments.

Juanita’s This long-running cantina and live music venue picked up and moved last year, from South Main Street to the River Market. But most things stayed the same: reliable Southwestern cuisine and high quality live music, mostly from touring acts. In the last several months, Juanita’s has hosted everything from underground rap (Tech N9ne, Twiztid) to rock (Hinder, James Durbin), metal (Anvil, Pallbearer), singer/songwriters (Lucinda Williams) and more.

Midtown Billiards This is one of the bona fide institutions among Little Rock bars. It's a true dive with a brokenin charm that can't be manufactured. This smokers' haven is also one of the few bars with a license to stay open until 5 a.m. There are live bands most weekends, with sets typically starting at 12:30 a.m. Midtown also serves one of the best cheeseburgers in town.

Revolution Along with its slightly smaller sister venue, Stickyz, and Juanita’s, Revolution books some of the best live touring bands in Central Arkansas. The venue tends to bring in indie rock, hip-hop and country. You can often catch up-and-coming acts here before they break through to much wider success. In the year or so, Revolution has hosted hip-hop luminaries such as Yelawolf and Future, country and folk

fried chicken. Split into two rooms and a sizeable patio, Stickyz can accommodate live bands at the same time as it can host crowds just looking for a drink and maybe some nosh. The venue brings in a lot of great touring acts, but books local shows as well, including a regular Monday night Grateful Dead tribute act called Touch. Don’t miss out on their great lunch specials.

Verizon Arena While the 18,000-seat stadium formerly known as Alltel Arena venue doesn’t have live music every week, the shows it does get are massive and read like a who’s who of major artists from the last 40-plus years: Tom Petty, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, Justin Bieber, Eric Clapton, The Who, James Taylor, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Miranda Lambert, Elton John, The Foo Fighters, Brad Paisley and countless others have graced the stage at Verizon Arena. West End Smokehouse

This storied, 2,600-seat performance hall has been hosting concerts, comedians, plays and more for decades. It’s the primary venue for the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and Celebrity Attractions brings in a variety of Broadway shows every year, including “Mama Mia,” “Wicked,” “Young Frankenstein” and more. In terms of pop concerts, Robinson has hosted The Avett Brothers, John Prine, Wilco and many more over the years.

This west Little Rock pub hosts music every weekend that tends toward the rock end of the spectrum. They also serve up some very good grub, including burgers, catfish and steak, and have 10 pool tables and more than 50 TVs, so you won’t miss any of the big game while you’re out with your friends.

After a sort of transitional period when they didn’t have live music, this pizzeria and brewpub is getting back to its live music roots, booking mostly punk and indie rock acts while also hosting poetry readings and homebrew events. Vino’s has been around since the early ’90s and has hosted some legendary performances in its time, including shows from such punk rock legends as Jawbreaker and Green Day.

Arkansas State Capitol It’s hard to venture to the center of the city and not catch a glimpse of the Arkansas State

Capitol’s bright dome, with its 24-carat gold-leaf cupola, that resembles a scaled-down version of the U.S. Capitol. Construction began in 1899 and took 16 years and $2.2 million (now valued at $320 million) to complete, and the price and effort were well worth it. The bronze front entrance doors, which were purchased at Tiffany’s, are 10 feet tall and four inches thick. An upward view from beneath its breathtaking rotunda can weaken the knees. Arkansas Studies Institute The Arkansas Studies Institute is the state’s largest facility dedicated to the study of Arkansas history and culture. Governor’s Mansion One of the newer structures in the neighborhood, this Georgian Colonial-style home was completed in 1950 during Gov. Sidney McMath’s term. The mansion incorporated brick from the old Arkansas School for the Blind, which originally occupied the site where the house now sits. No formal ceremony marked the opening of the Governor’s Mansion in 1950; instead the public was invited to tour the new structure. During the week-long public “open house,” more than 180,000 visitors toured the new home. Historic Arkansas Museum

Named for World War II commander Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History was created to honor the state’s military heritage through exhibits featuring artifacts, photographs, weapons, documents, uniforms and other items. The museum is located in the city’s oldest surviving neighborhood and the original Tower Building—where Douglas MacArthur was born Jan. 26, 1880—is the centerpiece of the 36-acre MacArthur Park where the museum is located. Trapnall Hall One of only a few remaining antebellum homes in the city, this stately neoclassical home was built in 1843 for Frederic Trapnall and his wife, Martha. After serving as a boarding house in the 1920s, it became the Junior League of Little Rock’s headquarters. In 1963, it underwent extensive renovation. The Villa Marre The Villa Marre rose to fame as the offices of the Sugarbaker Design Firm from the long running hit television show “Designing Women.” The Villa Marre was built in 1881 as a reminder of the Italian heritage of the owners, Angelo and Jennie Marre. It was built after the Second Empire architectural style that also boasts Italianate influences. The main feature of the home, the mansard roof, is both eye catching and breathtaking and is adorned with multicolored rectangular slates that are intertwined creating a decorative fish-scale motif. Other examples of the Italianate style are the tall narrow windows and a tower centered on the front half of the home. Argenta To experience one of central Arkansas’s fastest

growing spots make a stop in Argenta, North Little Rock’s historic downtown. Dickey-Stephens Park—home of the Arkansas Travelers baseball team—, Verizon Arena, Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the U.S.S. Razorback submarine can all be found in Argenta. The area has its own market and deli and is home to several great restaurants. There are art galleries and even a bead shop on Main Street. Make sure you take a sunset cruise on the Arkansas Queen steamboat and then hop aboard the River Rail Trolley for a sightseeing tour of the historic area. MIDTOWN Midtown bridges downtown with West Little Rock,

while bringing its own unique brand of Southern hospitality to the city. Midtown is home to a number of nationallyrecognized and award-winning medical centers, including the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, St. Vincent and Baptist Hospital. Midtown is also home to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. While residents work hard, they love to play hard, too. It’s not unusual to hear the echo of a hog call at War Memorial Stadium or the ping of a golf ball being driven off the tee at War Memorial Golf Course. The big news on the block is that the Little Rock Zoo recently welcomed a flock of penguins to its exotic animal family, and it won’t be long before the Central Arkansas Library System opens a new children’s branch in Midtown. CANTRELL ROAD From downtown Little Rock to the far reaches

THE OLD MILL One of North Little Rock’s most popular attractions, the Old Mill is a 1933 re-creation of a water-powered gristmill dating to 1828. Also known as Pugh Mill, it was featured in the opening of “Gone With the Wind” and is home to several sculptures of internationally known Mexico City artist Dionico Rodriguez.
