ure, May brings a proliferation of flowers, but it also ushers in new ideas for home and wardrobe. Here we offer our version of a spring clean. It doesn’t involve actual sweeping or dusting because, well, how much fun would that be? We had a grand time in our photo shoot with the very refreshing Lauren Roark. You’ll love her style and her youthful, independent spirit. In addition, we play house with the Taggarts, a lovely, laid-back family who recently renovated their Hillcrest bungalow to make it work with their lifestyle. Because the French have long been the arbiters of fashion, on this page we indulge our love of all things French. A fixture of my wardrobe as of late is the classic striped Breton shirt—in my opinion, always au courant. As far as home accessories, I still remember being quite taken with a friend’s sitting room, in which she’d placed 10 red Eiffel Towers (like the purple one pictured at right) on a low windowsill. It made such an impact and looked, as the French say, très cool. Her dirty little secret (and a real shocker) was that she found them at Hobby Lobby. Go figure. So without further ado, Allons-y! A postcard from my dog Lucky

h, Paris in the spring! On this page I bring you a mélange of my favorite French finds. This gorgeous chandelier, which hangs in my dining room, came from the early days of Ellen Golden Antiques (still the best place to find fine French fixtures). How can one resist amethyst? Because my tastes run from the kitschy to the cultivated, I’ve also included the tableau below, a $2 flea market score, which demonstrates the ingeniousness of using fabric as art. Just place in a frame, and voilà! Cynthia East has some at the moment that would work beautifully. The Eiffel Tower statuettes come from opposite ends of the price spectrum, the purple glass one a $1 estate sale buy, the chrome model from Soho Modern. They’d be fun grouped together or solo. Zut alors!

hen I arrive at the Taggart’s house, a sweet bungalow with a generous front porch, Adel, age 3, hangs back only for a moment before taking me to see her favorite spot in her family’s newly renovated home. It’s every child’s dream—a secret nook under the stairwell with a slanted ceiling. It functions as her closet, but more importantly as a home for her dolls and a place for make-believe. Burt Taggart—an architect, musician and founder of the record label Max Recordings—and wife Lindsey knew they wanted to stay in the neighborhood, but also craved more space as their family grew. So nine months pregnant with their second child— son Sam, now 1—Lindsey found herself packing up house to move in with her in-laws so they could renovate. “Sam was 3 weeks old when we moved out,” she says. Over the next five MAY 2010
months, the Taggart residence underwent a transformation from rabbit-warren to wide-open living space. OPEN HOUSE On their list of must-haves was a family living area where they could gather to eat, hang out . . . crawl (Sam) . . . maybe play with blocks (Burt) . . . watch a movie. They knew they needed more room, but, says Lindsey, “An addition alone wasn’t going to fix the small living area . . . I thought, if we’re going to do this, if we’re going to stay here, then let’s do it right.” Burt adds, “We were going to band-aid maybe one or two issues and not really think globally, Lindsey got us back on track.” He laughs, “So then, the laundry list became longer. . .”
(Above) Originally the entry-point and main livingroom, this space now seamlessly spills into the kitchen and family room. (Right) The kitchen update included top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances and custom cabinets.
Burt describes the house pre-renovation as, “broken up in the Craftsman-y, Hillcrest-y style.” First, they took out a wall that began at the front of the house and continued through to the back, framing off the living room, kitchen and a bedroom. “It just didn’t make sense . . . We wanted to let it all spill out into the same space,” he explains. They also wanted to be able to corral the clutter. They accomplished this by using handsome straw baskets to store toys and custom cabinets to hide the detritus of daily life. “We’ve tried to organize it in such a way that things can explode and go crazy during kid time, and then, within 15 minutes at the end of the day, it gets completely picked up so that it feels relatively like this again when we open a bottle of wine or whatever,” Burt says, gesturing to the tidy, sleek space around him. WHERE THE WILD THINGS WERE The front bedroom, once Burt and Lindsey’s, now serves as an office and guestroom. They added on a proper master bedroom at the back, complete with luxurious bath. The room Adel now occupies once functioned as a dining room, dog kennel, and general
catchall—that is, until the dogs finally just took over, claiming it as their own and forcing the family to eat at a children’s table. Naturally, a place to gather and eat together was high on the priority list, and the first order of business was to relegate the dogs to the backyard. “Before the renovation, we just had such an issue with the dining room; it was so awkward and weird. . . We
with similar stylings, and so he a clear idea what he and Lindsey wanted and how to make it happen. “The nice thing was that when it came for us to go down a certain aesthetic path, there was a lot of research that was just done because of the line of work I do,” he says. Design- and budget-conscious but practical at the same time, they bought furniture from Ikea and chose a

And it worked!” says Lindsey. The upstairs, now a playroom, was used as storage for Max Recordings, and also served as a home for the cat, who permanently retreated there to escape the dogs. “Every pet had his quarters,” laughs Burt. fun mix of carpet tiles from FLOR (an ideal solution when living with children and pets). Burt smiles, “Yeah, at first we weren’t planning to go so Ikea crazy, but Lindsey’s wish list grew.” Burt reflects, “Before the renovation, we were living in a kind of Pottery-Barn-y, Pier-One-y kind of world, and I think at some point along the way, we thought, what if we just tried to live in a contemporary environment to see if we liked it or not. We thought before we made another investment eight years down the road or so, we could try on a different hat for awhile.” Turns out they like this hat; and they wear it well. MAY2010

A in Fayetteville, but my internship under designer Jordan Crowson is where I learned the things that really opened up my worldview: Poiret, The Ballet Russes, Yves St. Laurent, draping, cinema, and the importance of artistic, historical, and cultural “references.”
This Mountain View native is also whip-smart, softspoken and, thankfully, up for anything, even if that means climbing in a tub full of children’s stuffed animals. Lauren crafts what could be described as clothes for the thinking girl and has a unique ability to combine vintage and modern style; take for example her fanciful doily blouse (definitely not your grandmother’s doilies).
CUE: What’s one of the first articles of clothing you ever made? LR: My childhood repertoire of cotton shift dresses aside, one of my first re-purposing projects started with a cigarette-burned dress. I bought a black 1960s dress that had a great fit, but that also had an unattractive cigarette burn on the chest. I ripped apart about a dozen old zippers and sewed them (teeth up) to the neckline of the dress in an undulating pattern—to create a bib necklace effect, but also simply to cover the cigarette burn. This is when I realized that there are no limits to fashion, even re-purposed fashion.
CUE: When did you first get interested in making clothes? Lauren Roark: As a kid, I would obsessively watch old movies and attempt to sketch the evening gowns. I began to sketch my own designs; incidentally, I found it beneficial to name each dress (i.e. Greta, Millie, etc.) for some reason. My mother taught me to sew, but I would also commission her to make some of my designs. I received a bachelor’s degree in fashion merchandising from U of
CUE: How would you describe your style? LR: A 1930s showgirl meets surrealist Elsa Schiaparelli at a 1960s French New Wave film retrospective. I sincerely love all those esoteric art and film references, but I unashamedly adore feathers and sequins. . . . I love to dream up new purposes for old or abandoned garments because I am hopelessly nostalgic. My sewing machine is my time travel device.

CUE: What inspires you? LR: Films are a continuous source of inspiration. Fassbinder, Bunuel, Godard, Varda, Kieslowski and Wong Kar-Wai are among my favorite directors. There are images from movies that haunt me, and I find myself trying to recapture them over and over in my clothes. Art, literature and music have a similar effect on me. The sculptor Louise Nevelson and writer Anais Nin are two of my current influences. I have also recently begun romanticizing tribal and sci-fi references. I try to keep an open and curious mind; almost everything has the potential to be inspiring. CUE: If your clothes were a dessert, what kind would they be? LR: There is an episode of “Seinfeld,” where Elaine eats a piece of cake from the wedding of the Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson. I would have to say that famed piece of cake. It was vintage, probably rather well-made and well-decorated, and (due to the “Seinfeld” connection) I associate it with wit and absurdity.
Beauty and the beasts. Lauren reclines in a tub of “Uglydolls” at Box Turtle/Cheeky Marshmallows.
CUE: What are you listening to these days? LR: I always listen to a lot of 1960s and 1970s music: The Everly Brothers, The Ronettes, The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens and T. Rex. More recently, I have been listening to Bon Iver, Band of Horses, Best Coast, Yann Tiersen, and the soundtracks to Breaking Upwards and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. [ . . . and, we assume, Kingsdown, rocker husband Dwain Roark’s band, who has their their CD release party at the Rev Room on June 19th. We’re certain Lauren will be there looking fabulous.]

FOR THE HOME
Q. For a budget-conscious buyer in the market for furniture, which is best, old or new?
A. Sure, everyone likes to have new things, but the idea of “new” has changed over the years. As more people continue to “go green,” purchasing refurbished furniture has become the new “new.” Furniture that has been professionally refinished with a fresh look and feel will complement any décor—and is easy on the wallet. Q. I don’t want to spend a lot of my free-time doing yard work. What are some low-maintenance options for me to consider?
A. Installing ground cover is probably the only lowmaintenance option you have. Ground cover plants are appealing for their variety of ornamental features which can add interest to landscapes. Vinca, liriope and mondo grass are good low-cost choices. WLM Landscape & Sprinkler Services can do this for you at an affordable rate. WLM Landscape & Sprinkler, 501.834.0578 or 501.225.4452
Q. What is infrared photography?
A. It is a type of photography that uses infrared film which has a broader range of sensitivity to light than regular film. When John McDermott, an Arkansan now living in Cambodia, uses infrared film he also employs a deep red filter that only allows deep red and infrared light waves to reach the film. The result is a dreamy, impressionistic image in gray tones similar to a charcoal sketch or fine etching. You can see John McDermott’s work at Boswell/Mourot Fine Art, 5815 Kavanaugh Blvd. in the Heights. 501.664.0030
Q. What is the best flooring surface for the outdoors?
A. The best outdoor flooring surface is natural stone, like slate, flagstone, travertine or a porcelain tile with a slightly rough finish. Due to the fact that outdoor spaces get wet, be cautious if using a smooth tile or stone. There is an increasing number of great rugs that are made specifically for outdoor use and can be used to soften your hard surfaces. C & F Flooring, 501.399.9909

Me in CUE Q&A WITH LOCAL EXPERTS
FOR THE HOME
Q. When it comes to landscape lighting, what’s a common mistake people make?
A. The most common mistake people make is over lighting. It’s important to remember that sometimes less is more. Low levels of light create subtle beauty and are often sufficient for security. Lewis Lighting & Home, 501.315.2400
Q. How can I easily bring spring colors from the outside in?
Join VIP Club! Text Solemates to 84700.
A. By using multiple, beautiful floral patterns in hues from juicy vibrant citrus tones to relaxing but rich plums and blues. Mix and match throw pillows for the living room or bedroom for that special seasonal touch. Cynthia East Fabrics, 501.663.0460
Q. What’s the next show at Gallery 26?
716.2960 Pleasant Ridge Town Center
A. Gallery 26 will soon present “A Couple of Cut-Ups,” collage and mixed media work by Amy Edgington and Byron Werner. The opening reception will be Saturday, May 15th, from 7pm-10pm, and there will be live music by The Mockingbirds. Receptions are free and open to the public. The show runs May 15th – July 10th. Gallery 26, www.gallery26.com, 501.664.8996
FOR THE BODY Q. In fashion magazines, I see jewelry that is either big and bold or tiny and petite. How do I know what looks best on me?
A. Both options are great; it is the outfit that typically dictates which to wear. If you are wearing something sharp and edgy, then the jewelry needs to have a big punch, but if you are more into florals or light and airy, then show your softer side with a more delicate, quieter piece. Kenneth Edwards Fine Jewelers, 501.312.7477
Q. When can a man wear white shoes and with what?
A. From Easter to Labor Day is the perfect time to brighten up the standard dark wardrobe, and that goes for shoes, too! Get him to try on a pair of classic white nubucks, and you will have to pry them off by the end of the summer. They will complement summer suits to jeans and most anything in between. Mr. Wick’s, 501.664.3062
Q. How do I get my jewelry insured?
14 ❘
❘
A. Some jewelers offer insurance through their stores; others will recommend going through your homeowner’s policy. Each policy has different types of coverage which your agent could then explain. If you don’t own your home, there are policies for renters. It is important to remember to keep a current appraisal. You should reassess with your jeweler and insurance agent at least once every two years to keep up with the value changes in the market. And you should always insure the full amount of the appraisal. It’s obvious from the moment we arrive at Stephano’s that dogs figure prominently in both his life and art. It’s a sweet scene: Stephano at work on a portrait of his neighbor’s dogs, his loyal companion resting by his side. Rescued from a puppy mill during a raid in which 87 dogs were seized, Diego is at first tentative but easily won over when offered a biscuit and scratch behind the ears. “He used to be very skittish. He’s come a long way since we got him,” explains Stephano. Stephano’s wife, Ashley Polk-Sutherlin, says that after adopting him from the Humane Society they discovered he’s what’s called a Grand Basset Griffon. The Basset part is evident by the trademark long, low-slung body and splayed front feet that turn outwards in Charlie Chaplin fashion. Diego also has striking brown eyes that look as though they’re rimmed in eyeliner. Ashley smiles like a proud parent, “He gets that from me.” Though she guesses that he’s about 3-years-old, Ashley says that Diego’s exact age and background remain unknown. It’s no mystery, however, why they adore the guy, with his scruffy good looks and gentle disposition. Stephano says that Diego reminds him of Falkor from the movie “The Never-ending Story,” while Ashley thinks he looks like S@!*head from “The Jerk” or the “Trouble” dog in the Travelers Insurance commercial. It’s clear, however, that though he may resemble these dog stars, he is very much his own man. “He’s got a will of his own,” says Stephano.

Call it kismet Ashley recounts how they’d been looking for a dog for awhile, but hadn’t found the right one. Her Zen-like philosophy of acquiring a pet recalls that old Buddhist proverb—“when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” Or in this case, when the master is ready, the pet will appear. “I’ve had animals my whole life,” explains Ashley. “I’m like Elly May Clampett,” she laughs, and it really isn’t that hard to picture her in a gingham shirt with a raccoon on her shoulder. “Growing up, I had a possum, ducks, chickens, horses, cows, dogs. I never went to ‘get’ a dog; they always came to me. . . I told Stephano, I said, we’re looking too hard. A dog will find us.” Looks like she was right. MAY2010
