NEW IN TOWN FULLER & SON HARDWARE 14710 Cantrell Road, 501-868-8080 fullerandson.com Family owned since 1921, Fuller & Son Hardware launched their newest location in the Heights in December 2014. Although situated in a relatively small space of 4,300 square feet, Fuller & Son has created an open feel using a new approach to retail design, fourth-generation co-owner J.R. Fuller said. Working with designers from Orgill, the store’s main distributor, Fuller has created several space-saving measures, such as pullout drawers and sliding racks that doubled the retail space.

Customer service is so important to Fuller & Son that the store’s owners promise a 5 percent discount on your purchase if you’re not greeted within 60 seconds. “Our main goal is to help get what the customer needs and only what he or she needs without any hassle,” J.R. says. And the initial greeting from the Heights area community has also been warm. “The way this area’s community has embraced our newest store has been overwhelming,” said co-owner Jeff Fuller. “Customers are continually surprised at the amount of merchandise we have been able to provide in such a small space. Most people think of a hardware store as being a place to get stuff to make things
work at your home. But we even carry things like HDMI cables and iPhone chargers, along with gifts like candles and knives.”
I LOVE JUICE BAR 201 N. University Ave., Ste. 210A ilovejuicebar.com The folks behind the I Love Juice Bar in Little Rock’s Midtowne Shopping Center have made healthy living their mission through a selection of fresh fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies, but their repertoire doesn’t stop there. The national chain is coming to Arkansas thanks to the efforts of Jim, Tommy and Jake Keet, who operate several Taziki’s Mediterranean Café locations in Arkansas. They’ve brought on longtime catering director Barkley Boyd to oversee the new venture. “I truly believe at I Love Juice Bar we are the next level of healthy eating,” Barkley says, adding that I Love Juice Bar also offers a selection of fresh salads, spring rolls, soups and gluten-free treats alongside its juice and smoothie options. The I Love Juice Bar chain began when owner John Hunt watched the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead,” which promotes the virtues of juicing as part of a healthy weight-loss and healthmaintenance program. Hunt was suffering the stresses of the corporate life and hungry for a change, and being unsatisfied with the offerings in his area of Nashville, opened a juice BRIAN CHILSON

RELYANCE BANK 1801 N. Fillmore St., 501-404-3454 relybank.com Founded in Pine Bluff in 1965, Relyance Bank has a strong customer-centered philosophy. Their operations have grown quite a bit in the past 50 years, and the bank has now expanded all over Arkansas, including the Heights area, at 1801 N. Fillmore St. (at the corner of Cantrell and Fillmore). Branch manager Sandy Ross and the Relyance Bank staff offer Heights-area clients personal and commercial checking accounts, along with savings and certificates of deposit. It also provides personal, commercial and agricultural loan services, personal and commercial credit cards, investments and trust services. In addition to serving customers, Relyance is also very community oriented and involved with a number of charities. The bank has a mission to support and sponsor groups and organizations in the communities where they are located, and the new Heights location is no different. The bank is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and on Saturdays it is drive-through only from 9 a.m.-noon.
and one called “Everything,” which lives up to its name with an ingredient list that reads like an entire supermarket produce section. Roots Juice is based out of Dallas, although owner Brent Rodgers has connections to the Little Rock area — his father, Kelly Rodgers, is the superintendent of the North Little Rock School District. Rodgers wants people in central Arkansas to have a place to go for healthy food, and it is his belief that fresh fruit and vegetable juice “resets the mind,” inspiring juice enthusiasts to do what mom always said: Eat your veggies.
HOWSE 2200 Cantrell Road, 501-725-4719 thehowse.com With a grand opening held in July, 2015, HOWSE is one of the newer additions to the Riverdale design district. Specializing in the “find and furnish” approach, this 7,000-square-foot retail furniture store is a wonderful new addition to one of Arkansas’s most diverse areas for design. “We have a lot of unique and one-of-a-kind pieces in our warehouse space,” says HOWSE marketing coordinator Leslie Gardner. The team at HOWSE is dedicated to giving its customers exactly the right sort of products
and advice to create spaces that represent them perfectly. Founder Jay Howard and several professional designers are on hand to help you “put your space together, providing unique, in-stock merchandise that is either available immediately or delivery,” Gardner says. One of the biggest selling points of HOWSE seems to be ensuring that your home has a unique look. “Your house is not going to look like another person’s place. Our designers can help you select a single piece or we can do over your entire space or home,” Gardner says. With a background in interior design, and a degree from the University of Central Arkansas, Gardner has owned her own business, and worked with architectural firms while in college, as well as time in retail settings. It’s this level of experience that makes HOWSE such a great place to shop. In addition to its main area, the team also operates Ware | HOWSE, another part of its concept that is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This area down from HOWSE specializes in handcrafted and hand-carved items and “stocks a lot of inventory,” Gardner says. It’s a great place to find one-of-a-kind treasures to make your home a comfortable, beautiful place in which to live. n

OUR FAVORITE NEIGHBORS BY LISA ARMSTRONG AND KELLI REEP
SAM WADSWORTH, CHI’S 3421 Old Cantrell Road, 501-916-9973 chislittlerock.com A mainstay in the Riverdale area, Chi’s Asian Cafe is a bit different from the other restaurants owned by Lulu Chi. “Chi’s is known for Chinese food, but we went in a little different direction with this location,” says general manager Sam Wadsworth. The Asian Cafe includes Thai and Japanese cuisine, including sushi. “Our core menu is Chinese, but the sushi and Thai flavors expand the offerings. Some customer favorites on the menu are Kung Pao Triple Delight (a mixture of chicken, beef and shrimp), and cowboy or Hawaiian sushi rolls,” he says.
Sam has been the general manager of Chi’s Asian Cafe for three years. “I started as a server at the Shackleford and Markham location. Then, the Riverdale location management position opened,” he says. Asked why people like Chi’s Asian Cafe so well, Sam says, “People come here for good food, good service and a good atmosphere. I strive to keep things as down-to-earth as I can, so I spend a lot of time on the floor getting to know the customers.” As a result, the restaurant has a lot of first-time guests who become repeat customers. “It’s always a pleasure to see the regulars coming in — I want people to feel comfortable.”
T
he spirit of community in the Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale neighborhoods is one of the things that evoke a deep sense of pride in the people who make these areas their home. These are the sort of places where people stop to talk on the street, make impromptu plans to grab coffee or go on group excursions to the local shops and bars. n There are many people who make these neighborhoods a great place to be. These are some of our favorite neighbors from around the Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale area, and each person featured here is as excited about being a part of the community as we are to have them.

they were dating 16 years ago. With the realization of that dream in 2015, they introduced a new level of customer service for longand first-time clients. “It’s not uncommon to see someone walking arm-in-arm with an employee assisting a customer,” Erica says. The Schafers have made some renovations, and anticipate even more, along with some exciting new developments. A stage has been added for live music during Hillcrest Shop and Sip First Thursdays, but structures are not the only items that are new. “We cleared out the north side of the garden center, and that change revealed rock-tiered flower beds and trees that had grown up out of their original plastic pots,” Erica says. “We have installed a chicken coop, and have plans for a community garden, too.” Many of the Schafers’ new plans involve ways to involve the community around them, including a new farmers market opening in October that will operate on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Other plans for the future include an artists’ co-op featuring locally made arts and crafts. And to help engage the younger set, Erica proposes an “interactive” walk-through fairy garden. “We want to do lots of educational classes involving kids. We hope that Hocott’s will become a place to come and hang out for the whole family.”
PETER BRAVE, BRAVE NEW RESTAURANT 2300 Cottondale Lane, Ste. 105, 501-663-2677 bravenewrestaurant.com A native of Little Rock, Peter Brave graduated from Central High. His rather unusual route to becoming a chef began when he was a child who refused to eat the meals his mother had prepared. After graduating from high school, Peter moved to San Francisco, where he had originally planned to attend culinary school. However, his plans for formal education fell apart, and he started working at restaurants where he had “on-the-job” training. After several years working at hotels and restaurants in the Bay area, Peter returned to Little Rock in 1985 to become the chef at the Capital Hotel, “But my goal with working there was always to one day have my own place,” he says. After realizing his dream with Brave New Restaurant, Peter admits that the hours were long at first, but over the years he has started delegating some tasks. Nowadays, he is assisted in the restaurant by his sous chef, Janice, and by several managers. “They provide the stability and consistency I need to do what we do around here, and that is Brave New Restaurant’s
identity,” he says. Brave said he comes up with most of the recipes he uses in the restaurant and, like so many chefs, he cooks a lot without the use of a printed recipe. When asked to share his recipes, he says, “I really don’t have any recipes, I have only suggestions.” It’s a system that has served Brave and diners all around Arkansas quite well over the years.
MARK CARROLL, MR. WICKS 5924 R St., 501-664-3062 mrwicks.com Before he started in the men’s clothing business, Mark Carroll’s father, Charles “Cheeks” Carroll read an issue of Gentleman’s Quarterly. One article featured an English gentleman who wanted to hire a valet. A “Mr. Wicks” answered the ad and was hired. This butler character inspired the name of Charles Carroll’s business, as he felt it represented the service he hoped to provide his new customers. Mark Carroll started working with his father in 1968. “I had such a wonderful working relationship with him,” he says. “Dad was always focused on personal service and providing the customer with well-made, correctly fitting garments.” Although in the past Mr. Wicks has focused HEIGHTS • HILLCREST • RIVERDALE • 2015

In the 33 years since then, the Davids have seen a lot of ups and downs. At first, Ed was gone a lot due to work at the restaurant. When Zac was 3, Laurie asked her son, “Do you know who loves you?” The toddler replied, “Yeah, you and that man at The Faded Rose.” “After that, we made a point of having an early dinner with him every day,” Laurie says. Even so, Zac grew up at the restaurant. “The cooks prepared his favorite meals, and customers would even play games with him.” One of the highlights of their time in busi-
surprised when their son announced that he wanted to return to the restaurant. The second-generation David now serves as operations manager. “He’s done a lot with the bar — and with craft beers,” Laurie says. “We’ve had the grandkids of our older clientele coming in, and it’s nice to have someone younger running it.” “It takes our whole family understanding the direction we want to go with the restaurant,” Ed says. “You can find chef-driven restaurants in New Orleans and other places that take liberties with the food, but we keep
ness came during the 1992 presidential election. The Faded Rose became a hangout for members of the Clinton campaign. “George Stephanopoulos used to ‘close’ the restaurant. The staff would pick up all the chairs and he would still be working,” Ed says. Zac started working at the restaurant “as soon as we could get him to work,” Ed says. After graduating from Little Rock’s Central High School in 2000, he attended the University of Chicago, receiving a degree in communications. Given Zac’s degree, his parents were

on traditional clothing and carrying wellmade garments and accessories, there’s been a clothing adjustment in recent years. “It’s more casual now, so we carry more sportswear than ever,” Mark says. “When you work in a very service-oriented business, you form relationships with people who are just as much friends as they are clients. There’s nothing sweeter than hearing your name mentioned — getting personal recognition — I like to be friendly with everyone, and then other people remember.” If you ask for Mark Carroll at Mr. Wicks,

from the other local outfitters and the online guys,” owner Jim Frank says. “Our slogan is ‘We don’t just sell outdoor gear, we use it!’” This philosophy extends beyond the owner and into a diverse, experienced staff that stands ready to help customers with preparations for almost any type of trip — large or small. Available gear ranges from boats to climbing equipment, ski trappings, hiking and camping gear, and all types of footwear, gloves and other items needed for the active Heights resident. Asked about current trends in sporting gear, Jim says, “Backpacking seems to have become more significant than in the recent past — folks are wanting to get away from others and out into the wilderness. Recreational kayaking and fishing is also popular these days. But we’ve stuck with our roots through the years. Known for the Buffalo Grill in Riverdale and Cañon Grill in the Heights, Doug does what it takes to make his restaurants, customers, staff and neighbors happy. Take, for example, the time he shoveled the ice and snow from the sidewalks at Mrs. Polka Dot. Not too many people would be shopping on an icy cold day when schools and many businesses were closed, but Doug wanted the store’s employees to have a safe way to get inside to the warmth awaiting them. But it’s not just on snowy days that Doug makes people feel comfortable. Go to either of his restaurants, and you’ll be treated like an old friend. With food that is simple, delicious and delivered quickly in an atmosphere that invites you to linger, Doug knows what it takes to turn a restaurant into a neighborhood hangout. Buffalo Grill serves traditional American food like burgers, salads and grilled chicken platters, while Cañon Grill dishes up Tex-Mex plates, cold beer and a pasta offering or two to mix things up a bit.

Jeff left an 18-year career as an investment broker to pursue management of Burge’s full time. He says previous owner Jack Burge was a client, and
Jeff sent Burge’s hams and turkeys to his clients as gifts for years. When Jack approached him about buying the Heights location, Jeff took a leap of faith to continue the Burge’s tradition. The menu has remained much the same, and Jeff says the success of the shop is due to Burge’s loyal staff and customers. Whether you want fish, barbecue, burgers, sandwiches or homemade fried pies, Burge’s can provide it. It was Alden Burge that started this Arkansas tradition in Lewisville (Lafayette County) after moving from Shreveport, La., in 1953. In 1962, Alden moved into a dairyette to start the family owned business, which expanded to Little Rock in 1977. That location is the same one Jeff Voyles operates today. n

KAVANAUGH BOULEVARD HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE BY MICHAEL ROBERTS very community has a “main street” where residents can find exactly what they need, no matter what it might be. For the Heights and Hillcrest, that street is Kavanaugh Boulevard, which connects the two neighborhoods. The street derives its name from William Marmaduke Kavanaugh, a former United States Senator, editor of the Arkansas Gazette, Pulaski County Sheriff and president of the Southern Association, one of professional baseball’s premier minor leagues. Much has changed along the winding stretch of road between the Heights and Hillcrest, but it remains a vital thoroughfare that sees heavy traffic in the present day. n At any given time, scores of people can be seen walking along Kavanaugh, window shopping at the many boutiques, stopping into one of the art galleries, or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the street’s great restaurants. The street is a constant source of action in both the Heights and Hillcrest, with sections of the road itself serving as grounds for the various festivals and events held in the neighborhoods each year. n This is just a sampling of everything available along Kavanaugh Boulevard — it’s a street that is best experienced firsthand, on foot, just like many of the locals love to do. 18 HEIGHTS • HILLCREST • RIVERDALE • 2015

TERRY’S FINER FOODS 5018 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-663-4152 facebook.com/terrysfinerfoodstherestaurant At first glance, Terry’s Finer Foods appears to be a typical neighborhood grocer, but a closer inspection reveals a delightful selection of gourmet foods, imported cheeses, aged steaks and fresh local produce. Terry’s has been serving the people of the Heights for more than 50 years, but while owners Ellen and Lex Golden have maintained their commitment to highquality grocery products, they haven’t rested on their laurels. First came Terry’s Finer Foods the Restaurant, which opened in 2010 and began serving some of the best French bistro food in town. With a goal of creating cooked dishes that were held to the same standard as the food on the grocery shelves, the restaurant quickly became a popular hotspot for hungry folks looking for a great lunch in the Heights. In 2014, Terry’s expanded even further, partnering with Pizzeria Santa Lucia to open The Pizzeria at Terry’s Finer Foods. A custom-designed wood-fired oven was installed next to the store, and soon gourmet Neapolitan-style pizzas were drawing the crowds at night. In a day and age where innovative thinking and expanded offerings are part of what it takes for a business to survive, Terry’s has kept up nicely, all while maintaining the taste and quality that residents have come to expect.

GROWTH BRINGS CHANGE FROM ROAD EXPANSIONS TO BUSINESS RENOVATIONS, THE HEIGHTS, HILLCREST AND RIVERDALE AREAS ARE BOOMING BY LISA ARMSTRONG AND MICHAEL ROBERTS
T
he state of Arkansas has many fine symbols associated with it, from the diamond that adorns our flag to the apple blossom, our state flower. But these days, there’s another symbol that people in Little Rock have grown accustomed to seeing more than any other: the orange traffic barrel. From the ongoing rebirth of the Main Street area and renovation of Robinson Center downtown to the seemingly constant work on the interstate highways, there are very few places where the ubiquitous orange barrels don’t make an appearance. Cantrell every day, creating a stop-and-start traffic snarl that often results in traffic jams, automobile accidents and a general sense of dread whenever drivers find themselves on Cantrell during rush hour. The $4.6 million expansion plan was awarded to Little Rock’s Redstone Construction in 2011, and it sounded deceptively simple: Widen Cantrell Road to five lanes by adding an 11-foot-wide turning lane to allow people attempting to turn left a way to get out of traffic and hopefully avoid the

For residents of the Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale, nowhere has this been more apparent recently than on Cantrell Road between University Avenue and Mississippi Street. The thoroughfare is a major connection between the center of Little Rock and locations out west, and traffic congestion along the road has grown exponentially as new restaurants and shopping centers have opened and the city has expanded. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department estimates that around 35,000 cars travel up and down

constant slowdowns. Like most plans, though, the execution of the road expansion was a logistical juggling act that affected area businesses, first with the project’s need to relocate utility services along Cantrell, and then from the road construction itself. For some, like the Edwards Food Giant in the Tanglewood Shopping Center and Kraftco Hardware at 6711 Cantrell Road, the expansion meant the loss of vital parking spaces for customers. Kraftco owner Dick Bona jokes that the project may allow him to provide a service no other hardware store in town offers: drive-through tools and building supplies. Bona still considers himself lucky, though, because the expansion required other businesses along the street to shift locations or leave the neighborhood altogether. Independent community pharmacy Tanglewood Drug, a mainstay of the Heights area since 1964, was one of the businesses forced to move. The move east from its namesake Tanglewood Shopping Center into the Westgate Shopping Center was a big shift for employees and customers alike. Fortunately, things appear to be returning to normal for the drug store. “We had limited access for a while, which affected our traffic, but all the entrances and exits are open now,” says Tanglewood Drug owner Adam Wheeler, who is very grateful for customers who visit the local pharmacy by choice. “No one comes in here by chance — they are usually deliberately coming here.” Wheeler cites the pharmacy’s delivery service and expanded vaccine program as services that continue entice customers to brave the construction in order to keep shopping at Tanglewood Drug, and feels optimistic that longtime customers will find themselves at home in the new location. Not as fortunate was Ken Rash’s Outdoor Furniture. The widening project came so close to the outdoor furniture’s showroom — within five feet — that owner Lawrie Rash had no choice but to move her business away from Cantrell altogether, opening a new store at
11220 N. Rodney Parham Road. While Rash says that business at the new location is as good as ever, she laments having to leave the 20,000-square-foot space the company occupied for nearly 25 years. Retail outlets weren’t the only businesses affected by the project. Jeff Trine, owner of pizza chain Damgoode Pies, admits that the orange barrels outside his restaurant’s Cantrell Road location have resulted in a dip in business. “It looks like a construction zone,” Trine says. “People aren’t sure where or how to get into the parking lot.” Despite that, Trine remains positive about the project. “We are 100 percent ‘pro’ this project,” he says, expressing the hope that the wider road will help curb some of the auto accidents that have long plagued the area. In fact, Trine has decided to parlay the better access the road project will provide to the Cantrell Damgoode location into a
brought new life to the campus of Calvary Baptist, said associate pastor Jonathan Kelley. Along with a food truck event held every third Wednesday of the month called “Cuisine at Calvary,” the church opened a new playground in June 2015. “We wanted kids to feel like they’re in a park-like setting,” Kelley says. Calvary commissioned designer Wayne Davis to come up with brown-and-green “tree-like” structures for the area. “There are a lot of young families in the Hillcrest area, and we felt like it would be a good idea to get some to stay and play,” he says. As a result of the church’s outreach efforts, several families have visited the church and at least one new family has joined. “It’s a comfortable, safe environment.” With this new addition to the campus and the food truck events that will run till October or November, Calvary has seen an influx of people from all over. “We’ve had

In addition to the Cantrell Road expansion, other remodeling and renovation projects have been happening throughout the Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale area. Here is a look at some of them:

brewery, kitchen and dining room, but for Trine it was just the first step in a series of projects for his local pizza chain. With the downtown location up and running with both food and beer, Trine turned his sights on Damgoode’s original location, a small corner store in Hillcrest. “There were some pretty major issues with the building,” he says. “We had to gut everything.” In addition to the revamped structure, Trine says Damgoode will also be expanding its services in Hillcrest, adding four beer taps for Damgoode’s house beers as well as a
even took on the job of general contractor for the renovations on his restaurant, which started last June. Recently, he has had to take a break from the work after an injury. Yet he managed to oversee a lot of work before the mishap. “We’ve redone the patio area, creating some additional space and a new overhang. There’s a new deck, and part of the covered patio now includes outdoor seating with couches and tables,” Abernathy says. As for the outside of the building, “It has a new color complete with new siding, a redone entrance, a fresh

Modernization of the system also calls for more accessible boarding, prepaid fares, and more frequent arrivals and departures. But why the change? “A 10 year study has resulted in a need for increased frequency and improved service,” says Jarod Varner, Rock Region Metro’s executive director. This new approach to accelerating bus frequency is called Bus Rapid Transit (or BRT). If established, certain routes would become high-frequency corridors. “These faster routes would also have a positive impact on service to residents of the Heights, Hillcrest and Riverdale areas,” Varner says. “But the public transit system funding is currently limited to a quarter-cent sales tax,” he adds. The transit system hopes to get half of the funds from the Federal Transit Administration. “I think we are in a good position to compete,” Varner says. “The rest of the monies would have to come from other sources of public and private funding.”

selection of bottled brews from around the country. Along with the new drinks, a quirk of the building’s position on the corner has been turned into a walk-up serving window, which will allow pizza-hungry customers to step up for a slice right from the sidewalk. “Our goal was to make it as nice a place as possible without making it a truly nice place,” says Trine with a laugh. “We want people to still know they’re at Damgoode, still at their neighborhood pizza joint.” Damgoode’s Kavanaugh location was scheduled to reopen sometime in mid-October.

4823 Woodlawn Drive, 501-664-3600 phumc.com After a year of construction, Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church dedicated its new facilities on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015. This final phase of the facility’s master plan included the addition of a new Gathering Hall and a Sky Bridge, as well as other enhancements. The Gathering Hall serves as the main entrance into the church as well as a place where members and guests can socialize with one another before and after weekly services. The Gathering Hall is also a venue for wedding and funeral receptions, recitals and other events. The Sky Bridge links all of Pulaski Heights’ buildings together. This new addition allows you to walk all the way around the campus without having to be outside. Another exciting development at the church is the bright colors, artwork and signage on the walls in the children’s and youth areas. Once inside the children’s area, you are greeted by a depiction of the Tree of Life. As you approach the youth area, the decor is more of an industrial feel. This new art work has helped create a more welcoming atmosphere for children and youths, their families and guests. Energy efficient and environmental upgrades were also a part of the final master plan for this update to the renovations at Pulaski Heights Methodist. n

DESIGN AND DINE IN STYLE BY KAT ROBINSON

apital Park’s warehouses, once strictly storage space, have become Little Rock’s latest booming design mecca. The storefronts that have popped up along the strip between Cantrell Road and the Arkansas River are redefining the search for home style, with collaboration and cooperation valued over competition. and I was appointment only. “For so long it was warehouses,” Tanarah Haynie says. “But because of its location between downtown, Riverdale and the Heights, it’s natural for it to become a great shopping area. It’s taken these creative types to do it.” Haynie runs Tanarah Luxe Floral out of her Capital Park space. The front is a light retail operation, while her full-scale floral creation and delivery shop take up the back. She’s next door to Debi Davis Interior and Décor. “I had a metal building in Maumelle,” Haynie said. “I had a business there for years,
I realized I could do that. So I moved in.” Haynie’s shop is just one of more than a dozen home-related locations in this warehouse section. On just one side of the complex, you’ll find a bevy of interior spaces redefined by their tenants, from Debi Davis Interior and Design’s whitewashed walls and Restored Relic finds, to the illuminating ideas of A Shade Above and all through HOWSE, a newly opened showroom space filled with home decor. One of the designers at HOWSE, Janice Crawford, says there’s a lot of cooperation going on between the businesses here. “We do refer people, and they refer people to us, and it really works out great,” Crawford reiterates. “We carry a lot of bedding and a lot of beds, dining, sofas … we do a lot of reclaimed wood, exotic wood, mango, sheesham, acacia wood, a lot of interesting artsy pieces with live edges. We also offer local artwork.” HOWSE also offers a free design service. “If someone wants to make an appointment, we’ll go out to their homes and measure, try to configure a room, and if they want to buy something great and if not, that’s OK, too.” The warehouses have been transformed over the past 10 years. Back then, just C&F Flooring and Rug Gallery graced the row, along with businesses that used the facility for storage. But over the years, designers and interior decorators found the reasonably rentable location to be great showrooms.

Two sisters, Mona Thompson and Talena Ray, have owned Providence Limited for 15 years. Zac Woodiel works for them. He says relocating to the warehouse section has been beneficial. “The grand opening for this store was just two years ago October,” Woodiel shares. “They had filled their garages and their husbands’ shops with this merchandise, and storage facilities, and they had so much stuff they weren’t even sure what they had. They opened this store, thinking a few designers might come in here, but they didn’t expect the attention here, or that this would be such a popular retail space. We’re actually moving [down the row] to a larger location in January. “Being down here with the designers, Tom [Chandler] pulls a lot from us, and Debi [Davis] pulls a lot from us, Scott [Morris] at A Shade Above refers a ton of people over here, and we use him for all sorts of things. We all play off each other.” For buyers, a trip to Little Rock can be an all-day event. Some use Cajun’s Wharf, located at the back of Capital Park, as a place to sort out details and grab a bite to eat while on the hunt for the perfect furnishings and accessories. Nearby, there are plenty of classic eateries such as The Faded Rose and Brave New Restaurant as well as up-and-coming shops like The Fold and Maddie’s Place to dine, which alleviates the need for having to waste time hunting for food farther away. Decor element providers are also located in the park, including The Closet Factory (recently relocated from sevnth Street), BK Molding and Sandy Hubler Fine Art. LaHarpe’s Furniture also utilizes a warehouse on the property, and HOWSE has a secondary location, Ware | HOWSE, open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays in the center. Garry Mertins’ design operation, mertinsdykehome, spent time at Capital Park before moving into the former Cordell’s Deli on Rebsamen Park Road. Being in Riverdale has allowed Mertins to tap into the flow of people who head to the district every day, brought by all the choices in home design. It’s all part of an ever-expanding design district in the area that shows no signs of slowing down. “What’s happened in this area is a bit of a rebirth,” Haynie says, “it’s up and coming. Outside of Little Rock, people are coming here from Atlanta and overseas even, and they’re discovering us. It’s not traditional, and I think that’s embraced by these creative types who have moved in here.” n

Those same customers also discovered another product at Kroger this past year, Arkansas’s own Wicked Mix, which occupies a prominent display in both locations’ deli section. This snack mix is available in a sweet-and-spicy Original flavor, cranked-up Chipotle and the decadent Chocolate. It’s crunchy, salty and sweet, with just the right touch of heat — and quite addictive. HEIGHTS TACO & TAMALE CO. 5805 Kavanaugh Blvd. 501-313-4848 facebook.com/heightstaco As cities grow and change, so do the businesses that occupy them. For residents of the Heights, Browning’s Mexican Restaurant, opened in 1946, must have seemed as close to permanent as anything could, and many were shocked when the classic eatery announced its closure in 2014. Fans of downhome Ark-Mex didn’t have too long to be upset about Saltillo Platters lost, though. In 2014, Little Rock-based restaurant group Yellow Rocket Concepts announced that it was moving into the Browning’s space with Heights Taco & Tamale Co., featuring BRIAN CHILSON

Yellow Rocket partner and chef Scott McGehee called the idea of opening a taco and tamale restaurant in the Browning’s space “incredibly sentimental and nostalgic.” To that end, the Yellow Rocket team decided to go with a different direction from its other Mexican-inspired venture, Local Lime in Chenal. “As crazy as it sounds with all the Mexican restaurants we have, I think we can bring something to Little Rock that doesn’t really exist,” says McGehee, and the crowds that stretch waits at Heights Taco & Tamale Co. into an hour or more seem to agree. It’s a chili-and-cheese drenched heaven, and it’s done double duty by both elevating the Heights restaurant scene and keeping the tastes of yesteryear alive.
THE PIZZERIA AT TERRY’S 5018 Kavanaugh Blvd., 501-551-1388 pizzeria-santalucia.com In the past 10 years, the food truck revolution has swept through Little Rock like a delicious wildfire. New trucks arrive seemingly every month, and food truck events happen all over the city. As people have become more used to ordering gourmet-quality food from the back of a truck, it’s become clear that these mobile eateries are here to stay — and thank heavens for that! One of the most innovative food truck concepts was developed by Hillcrest’s Palette Catering. Not content to work the same sorts of flattop grills and barbecue smokers that many of the other trucks were using, Palette developed a mobile wood-fired pizza oven, the first of its kind in the city. Dubbed Pizzeria Santa Lucia, the mobile oven traveled around to events to serve some of the best Neapolitan-style pizza around. In 2014, Pizzeria Santa Lucia and Palette Catering announced that they had formed a partnership with gourmet grocer Terry’s Finer Food in the Heights to open a brick-andmortar pizzeria. A new, larger wood oven was installed outside Terry’s dining area, and soon customers were crowding the cozy dining room to sample the light, crisp crust and quality toppings that the new Pizzeria at Terry’s was turning out. Little Rock’s food scene has become a very competitive one in recent years, and it’s in no small part to places like the Pizzeria at Terry’s. It’s a delicious time to be in the neighborhood. n
