PUBLISHER’S NOTE
I
publisher Heather Baker,
like listening to the rain pitter patter on my rooftop. I like eating cake (it’s all fat-free, right?). I like traveling to tropical locations. But I love being a mom! From wiping runny noses and kissing booboos to seeing the excitement in the eyes of my children as they experience something for the first time—I love every thing motherhood brings. This issue of Savvy Kids is dedicated to moms. From gifts for Mother’s Day to celebrating the women who we consider hard-working moms—literally! Starting on page 12 you can learn to craft a few homemade gifts that mom will love (for just a couple bucks!), and a few fun gifts from local retailers to learning what it’s really like to take on the role as a mother while maintaining a career.

SAVVY FAMILY
Photography by Brian Chilson
Robby & Catherine Cole DAD: Robby Cole, Residential Loan Officer at Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp MOM: Catherine Cole, Professional Mommy, member of Riverfest Board of Directors CHILDREN: Trey, 6; AnnMarie, 3; and twins Addison and Charlie Belle, 1 CURRENT PROJECTS: While much attention is given to the musical acts, Riverfest still has a family focus including the wonderful children’s area that I coordinate known as KidZone. I also volunteer my time thru the Junior League of Little Rock. I hold the Riverfest Board Seat representing the league. For the 2011-2012 year, I will hold the position of Marketing Vice President. We are active members of Christ the King Catholic Church and School. I am a Chi Omega Alumni Advisor at UALR, and Robby is a little league baseball coach at Junior Deputy. PARENTING STYLE: We have a gracious attitude for our place as parents. Children are God’s gifts who are only on loan to us as parents for a short while. We strive daily to put our Faith first, marriage and children fall into place following that. While I think it’s hard to come up with a definitive “style” of parenting that describes us best, I think Robby and I just try to emulate the good in our parents and build on that. Life is not always the sweet moments of just hanging out at the park or laughing on the couch. We know our children need to see us in our imperfect moments, too. True 6 | savvy kids May 2011
happiness is a goal and it is valued most by each because we’ve shared real experiences that make us who we are…real people, trying real hard to be really great parents. LIFE LESSON LEARNED FROM PARENTHOOD: You’ll want to write this one down because it’s a lesson that is going to change your life forever. A few years back, while Robby and I were traveling to Georgia to visit Robby’s family, Trey at the age of 18 months taught us something we did not yet know as parents…Pretzels will fit down the window sill of a Suburban. Priceless! And now with four kids, we’ve also learned that sleep can be life changing! They each teach us something new every day. Favorites: Book: Catherine - The Bible and Parenting with Love and Logic; Robby – The Bible, Caddy for Life, The Street Sweeper Music: Catherine – Country; Robby – Any music that makes him break out the ‘air drums’ Family Activity: RIVERFEST!!! Restaurant: Casa Manana Guilty Pleasure: Reality TV Place to go for date night: We belong to a church group called Marriage Encounter that meets every month and has been doing so for five years now. (And Riverfest would make a GREAT date night!) Vacation Destination: Destin, Florida Won’t leave home without: Counting to make sure I have everyone.
It’s the little things...
How many times have you had to look around to find a little one? A child that was just right behind is now nose to the ground looking at something almost invisible to you! Kids love little things; and most also love to play in the dirt and feel the textures of living things like plants. That’s why miniature gardens are a unique way to bring it all together! And they work for inside spaces like on table tops, or outside near the base of a tree or against a large stone. To get started, buy a disposable camera and go for a nature walk with the kiddos for ideas. For inside gardens, find a low planter that is at least 12” across. This will give you some room for plants, paths and accessories. Cover the bottom with about 1” of gravel, and then fill with good quality potting soil to just below the top. Create some elevation changes by adding more soil in some areas then surround these areas with stone or moss. Little pea gravel works as a path, and The Good Earth has accessories like gates, furniture, fences and garden tools, as well as miniature plants. Create a forest look and place some toy dinosaurs throughout. Or create a desert look and add some little lizards. Little toy bugs are always a good addition and we have some of those too!

Big Heart The story of how one girl is working to help her furry friends By Emily Griffin
F
or some, they are easy to forget—out of sight, out of mind, so to speak. But for 11-year-old Kelsey Bell, homeless pets have become an issue close to her heart. “It all started the first day I went to the Humane Society of Pulaski County,” Kelsey recalled. “When I saw all the helpless animals, I knew I had to help.” After learning she was too young to work directly with the animals on her own, Kelsey tried to find other ways to help the Humane Society of Pulaski County. “They said I could help ‘raise awareness’,” Kelsey explained; and that’s exactly what she does. She started off by collecting newspapers at her school, Fulbright Elementary, to take to the shelter. Kelsey even gave a presentation to her class that explained what the Humane Society of Pulaski County does and how her peers could also help. She has held lemonade stands to raise money, collected toys, and even asked her friends and family to make a donation to the Humane Society of Pulaski County on her birthday, rather than buy gifts for her. Kelsey is planning a series of bake sales to raise money in coming months. Kelsey’s big heart has spread to other areas of her life as well. She helps teach Sunday School to younger kids at her church and helped with projects benefiting Heifer International.
Kelsey Bell is doing little things to make a big difference for the Humane Society of Pulaski County.
“One person might not be able to do a major donation or a big fund raiser, but if one person gets a few people, then it can add up to a lot! It starts with a few people doing little things that add up to a lot,” she explained. “My mom says every little bit helps!” Kelsey plans to continue doing whatever she can to help homeless animals and wants to be either a veterinarian or a Marine Biologist. Eventually, Kelsey explained, “I want to be like my grandma (who lives in Minnesota) and be President of the Humane Society!” “I wish I could do more to help the animals in the shelter. I feel like I speak for those without a voice. I truly do, and always will, love helping animals.” If you would like to follow in Kelsey’s footsteps and help the homeless animals at the Humane Society of Pulaski County, visit warmhearts.org, to learn how.

Healing is in our nature. There’s a place where everything comes together beautifully to make children well. Care, love and hope. Expertise, technology and research. All creating a continuum of care like no other, that’s as individual as each child. It’s a sight to behold. And so is a kid – being a kid again.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to show mom you care this Mother’s Day. In fact, 54% of Savvy Kids readers said they would rather have a homemade gift from their children than
jewelry, flowers, or even breakfast in bed. On these pages, we’ve offered a few simple gift ideas your children can make this mother’s day. Each project is under $10 each.
heart GIFTS FROM THE
Silhouettes
What you will need: Photos of your children (taken from the side) Dark and Light sheets of paper Picture Frames
12 | savvy kids May 2011
Instructions: Take the photos of your children and cut off the backgrounds leaving only their head, neck and shoulders. Next, trace the cut photos onto the darker piece of paper and cut it out. Then cut the lighter sheet of paper to fit inside the picture frame and glue the traced image to the center of the paper. Tip: Give your silhouette a trendy upgrade by using decorative paper, available at Just Scrap It! in Sherwood. Add a 3-D punch by gluing cardboard to the back of the traced image before adhering it to the background.
No-Sew Canvas Clutch What you will need: Decorative Fabric (preferably canvas), Velcro, Decorative Buttons or other Embellishments, Fabric Glue (we used Unique Stitch)
Instructions: Cut fabric into two pieces, 9” x 8” and 5” x 8”. Lay 9” piece of fabric right side up on table. Lay 5” piece of fabric right side down on top of larger piece of fabric. Line up bottom to bottom and glue the sides and bottom together with a thin strip of fabric glue. Once the glue dries, turn the bag right side out. Next, fold the unfinished edges in (once you have the bag right side out the sides will have a natural fold) and glue to make finished seam. Fold the top in a half inch and glue to make a finished seam. Next, pull apart the Velcro. Glue one side to the inside of the top flap, and the other to the outside of the bag where the Velcro will touch. Finally add your button to the outside for decoration. Tip: These make great make-up bags. You can also make smaller bags, using the same steps, which make great coin purses or credit card holders!
Decorated Candles What you will need: Candles, Decorative Ribbon (large, medium, and small in size)
Instructions: Start with the largest ribbon you have, and use it to measure the diameter of the candle. Cut the ribbon once it just slightly overlaps. Next, cut the medium ribbon the same length. Take the small ribbon and measure it twice the length of the large and medium ribbons. Wrap the large and medium ribbons around the candle and use the small ribbon to tie it all together in place. Tip: Make sure to remove the ribbon before burning the candles!
Gift Tag Greeting Card What you will need: Decorative Paper, Glue, Ribbon, Computer/Printer, Digital Photos
Instructions: Make a photo collage using your digital photos on your computer. Be sure to type “Happy Mother’s Day!” Next print your collage on 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper. Lay the paper horizontally on a table and fan fold the collage so that it makes four even panels. Next, cut your decorative paper to look like an old-fashioned gift tag (rectangle with top two corners cut at an angle). The tags should be slightly wider than your folded collage and a little more than half the height. Glue the tags to one side of the panel, facing away from each other. Once the glue has dried, fold the collage in half so the tag appears closed. Finally, add a small hole at the top of both tags and tie together with ribbon. Tip: If you are unfamiliar with photo editing software, build your collage online, using sites like picnic.com for free. Newer versions of Microsoft Word come equipped with a photo collage template.
Coil Bracelets What you will need: Jewelry Wire, Beads
Instructions: Bend one end of your wire to make a hook shape. Add a small bead and twist the hook closed (this will prevent your wire from poking mom’s arm while she’s wearing the bracelet). Next, start stringing your beads onto the wire. Use different types of beads to give the bracelet some extra texture. Once you’ve added the desired amount of beads, bend the end of the wire to make a hook shape and add a final bead and twist the hook closed. Finally, gently wrap your wire around your arm in a coil shape, and it’s ready to wear! Tip: Teach your kids about patterns! Lay the beads out according to color or shape and ask them to complete the pattern as they string the beads along the wire. may 2011 savvy kids

MOMS
PROFESSIONAL Working Hard For Their Families
Today, women comprise 46.8 percent of the total U.S. labor force. Many of these working women are mothers continually trying to balance their careers with the needs of their families. Savvy Kids found a few local working mothers and chatted with them about their careers.
Smith are six local women working hard for their families. These six women featured have very powerful jobs and are dedicated to moving forward with their professional responsibilities. Ultimately, though, each agreed being a mother is their first priority.
Sericia Cole, Heather Crawford, Joyce Cloud, Andrea Goodwin, Kristen Herring, and Heather

mom. Savvy Kids asked, “why is your mom the best mom?” Evan Rouse, Sericia Cole’s son, said, “my mom sometimes takes me places only I want to go to,” adding that it aggravates his brothers and sisters but makes him feel special. This was the general consensus between all the kids. To them, it doesn’t matter that their moms work long hours as long as they make an effort to have quality family time—and these ladies certainly do!
Andrea Goodwin Andrea Goodwin is the busiest homemaker you will ever meet! She is mom to Collin, Cassidy, Carson, Savannah, and twins Walker and John Steven Goodwin, and is hosting Toussaint Salvator Kaneza, a Rwandan Residential Scholar through the Bridge to Rwanda program. Goodwin also gives her time and energy to organizations like Arkansas Baptist School System, Lighthouse Children’s Home, and other missionary organizations.

“She’s very supporting of what I want to do with my life and she’s helping me achieve it.”
Heather Smith
Sericia Cole Sericia Cole is the Director of External Affairs in the Governor’s Office. She makes appearances and interfaces with faith-based and minority non-profit organizations who want support on behalf of the governor. Cole travels the state for her job and loves every minute! She is the mother of Julien Battle, Trreon Colle, Sandrea Cole, Sydney Holmes, Evan Rouse, and twins Bryson and Britton Cole.

Joyce Cloud Joyce Cloud is the COO at Pinnacle Pointe Behavioral Health System. Her career started in 1985, but she’s been a hard worker all her life. Cloud earned her degree and MBA working full-time all the way through. “Here at Pinnacle Pointe I get a wide angle view of the hospital operations and the actual running of the business,” Cloud explained, adding there is a strong focus strengthening the lives of children and their families.
Kristen Herring Kristen Herring is the owner of The Diet Center in Little Rock, and she started straight out of college 13 years ago. Herring said she loves helping people feel better about themselves and lead healthier lives. Herring is a single mom to Lake. “I’m lucky though,” she explained, “ Lake has a great dad who is very active in his life, and amazing grandparents too.” Herring said it’s tough balancing work and every day life, but she tries to take an active role and not miss out on the important things.

Mother’s Day Trivia
According to USA.gov, the first Mother’s Day observance was a church service in 1908 requested by Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia to honor her deceased mother. Jarvis’ mother expressed hope of establishing a day to commemorate all mothers. Two years after her mother’s death, Jarvis and friends began a letter-writing campaign to declare a national Mother’s Day observance to honor mothers. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on May 9, 1914, asking Americans to give a public expression of reverence to mothers through the celebration of Mother’s Day. Congress passed the legislation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Carnations have come to represent the day, following President William McKinley’s habit of always wearing a white carnation, his mother’s favorite flower. Other Mother’s Day Facts: • The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Leontina claims to be the mother of 64 children, of which only 55 of them are documented. She is listed in the 1999 Guinness World Records but dropped from later editions. • Tuesday is the most popular day of the week in which to have a baby, with an average of more than 12,000 births taking place on Tuesdays during 2001. • Many of the sweaters worn by Mr. Rogers on the popular television show, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, were actually knitted by his real mother. • Kittens are born both blind and deaf, but the vibration of their mother’s purring is a physical signal that the kittens can feel—it acts like a homing device, signaling them to nurse. • Mother’s Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world. Australia, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Russia, China, Thailand, all have special celebrations to honor Mothers, but not in the same way or on the same day as the United States.

Henry & the Buccaneer Bunnies By Carolyn Crimi Step aboard, buccaneers and book lovers! On the Salty Carrot sails a wild, rowdy band of Buccaneer Bunnies, led by Barnacle Black Ear, the baddest bunny brute of all time. His son, Henry, would rather read books than shout “Shiver me timbers!” or make prisoners walk the plank, even if it means swabbing the decks as punishment. But when a crashing, thrashing, bashing wildcat of a storm threatens them all, will Henry and his landlubbin’ library save the day?

Sullivan and guests enjoyed an “AllStar's 1st Birthday Party” at Adventureland Academy where they explored the two-story maze and a gym for active play with a foam pit for jumping. The kids had hotdogs, pizza, a cupcake tower from Sam's, a yellow star-shaped cake from Gigi's Cake Boutique and a Happy Birthday cake made by Betty McCoy. Every part of Sullivan's All-Star experience shined bright!

Liam Whitaker partied with friends at The Wonder Place for his 5th birthday. The kids filled the hours between many activities available at the enormous play center before and after visiting the party room decorated with floating balloons and pirate novelties. The Wonder Place hostesses served cupcakes – sprinkled by party guests – and ice cream after helping the children decorate “treasure chest” party favors to take home. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
