In recent years, Little Rock has undergone a tremendous renewal. The initial catalyst for the city’s renaissance was the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, reinvigorating this region as a true tourist destination. Newly renovated Robinson Center is the city’s state-of-the-art performance hall, conference center and an anchor to the downtown arts district. Wonderful attractions, award-winning restaurants, entertainment venues and new hotels await you. A great way to explore the city’s burgeoning adult beverage scene of craft breweries, wineries and awardwinning distillery is with the Locally Labeled passport. Additionally, Little Rock has a number of activities that appeal to a variety of audiences. Walk, run, bike, kayak or Segway along the Arkansas River Trail. Trek over the Big Dam Bridge, North America’s longest pedestrian- and bicycle-intended bridge. Enjoy Riverfront Park, a 33-acre urban park located along the river’s edge. It’s home to the city’s namesake La Petite Roche Plaza (The Little Rock), an amazing sculpture garden, two children’s splash parks and one of the brightest attractions in the Rock—three LED-illuminated downtown bridges spanning the Arkansas River that feature nightly light shows. Little Rock is steeped in rich history and heritage. The city is home to six of the 100+ sites on the new multi-state U.S. Civil Rights Trail, including Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site listed as a Top Ten Trail destination. Once here, you’ll see why Trivago.com named Little Rock a Top Ten “U.S. Best Value Destination” for the third consecutive year, and why both Southern Living and Food & Wine magazines listed it as one of “15 Southern Cities All Food Lovers Should Visit Now.” Discover the pleasant surprise of Little Rock, and see why we say “Life is Better with a Southern Accent.” Warm Regards,

You don’t want to miss this. When we arrived in North Little Rock, Arkansas, the first thing we did was jump on a METRO streetcar! what fantastic views of the Arkansas River while exploring downtown. The kids learned firsthand what it’s like to live as a submariner at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum. That’s right, we went in a real World War II submarine! Mom and Dad offered to watch the kids so we could have a much-needed date night. After dinner and drinks in the Argenta Arts District, we went to a comedy show at The Joint. SO funny! We laughed so hard. The next day was another full day: a visit to The Old Mill - it was in “Gone with the Wind! ” - and an Arkansas Travelers baseball game. Needless to say, the kids were tuckered out on the drive home. We’ll definitely be back!

HOTTEST NEIGHBORHO ODS: DOWNTOWN
Start your day at the Clinton Presidental Center then grab some brunch or beer at Lost 40 and Catheads's Diner.
EAST VILLAGE THE GIST OF IT:
Revival is the watchword in East Village; neighbors new to the area this year are building on the buzz of energy that’s been growing since 2004, when the Clinton Presidential Center was built and Heifer International anchored its humanitarian operation here. Recently renovated warehouses and factories maintain an urban-industrial feel, but an eclectic mix of businesses, restaurants and bars—even schools!—are creating a sense of community that’s very ofthe-moment.
EAT
Embark on a culinary adventure and take in the astonishing view at Forty Two, inside the Clinton Presidential Center, where locally grown, seasonal produce is center-stage and the river view creates a peaceful atmosphere. Chow down on hearty, Ca jun-inspired dishes—including an array of “shareables” at Rebel Kettle, a brewery that takes its food very seriously. Indulge the meat lover inside with an order from the “Beer Food” menu at Lost Forty Brewing, where no effort is spared to achieve the pinnacle of flavor in favorites like the house-smoked pork cuts and house-made bratwurst; or beat back your brunch cravings on the weekend with a giant cinnamon roll or a hash skillet. Look for a fresh and delicious lunch—with mouthwatering daily specials made of locally sourced ingredients at the Café at Heifer, on the grounds of the Heifer International Campus, where ease and convenience don’t require lowered expectations. Cathead’s Diner may be the neighborhood’s new kid on the block, but two Little Rock culinary veterans are at the helm, serving up donuts, desserts, brunch and blue plate specials all worth writing home about. Opening any day now in the Bike Shop and the Rail Yard is a more permanent location for Count Porkula, of food truck and catering fame, as well as an outdoor dining space that will feature a rotating schedule of food trucks and a craft beer garden with wine and specialty cocktails.

DRINK
Catch on to the beer craze that’s sweeping the entire state, by enjoying a brew created at Lost Forty Brewing. Choose one of the year-round standards, like the Rockhound IPA or the Love Honey Bock, or taste the season with a limited-release beer; you’ll leave happy either way. Continue your beer tour at Rebel Kettle, with one of their small-batch craft brews. Settle in at the bar, in the restaurant, or in the beer garden, where there’s often live music on an outdoor stage.
SEE & DO
Don’t miss the Clinton Presidential Center, where you’ll see a replica of the Oval Office and a museum that chronicles the career and two-term presidency of the 42nd Commander in Chief, Bill Clinton. And be sure to find out which traveling educational and/or cultural exhibit is in place during your stay. While there, stroll through the adjacent 13 acres of restored wetlands habitat, named for William E. “Bill” Clark, an avid outdoorsman and civic leader in Arkansas for over three decades. Stimulate your intellect by taking in a lecture at the Clinton School of Public Service, where globally hailed thinkers present ideas and concepts to the great minds of the future. Learn about world hunger through interactive exhibits at the Heifer International Campus, and marvel at the Leed Platinum building and its many “green” features, including the grounds, which are restored wetlands. Soon, the Arkansas River will be more accessible to all, thanks to the Rock City Yacht Club, a marina with 258 boat slips, a publicaccess boat ramp, a park, fueling station, restrooms and a dock store.

HOTTEST NEIGHBORHO ODS: MIDTOWN
MIDTOWN THE GIST OF IT:
There was a time when Midtown represented the far-west suburb of Little Rock, but those days are long gone. Midtown is now very much the center of the city, with established, family-friendly neighborhoods, great shopping and plenty of other amenities. If you want to experience the “heart” of Little Rock, this is it!
Call the Hogs on Oct. 13, visit the otters at the Zoo & grab a burger at Big Orange!
EAT
It can be tricky to find independent, homegrown eateries in Midtown; as the city’s retail corridor, the dining scene is dominated by chains and franchises. However, it’s not impossible to get a taste of something different. Big Orange is a gourmet burger spot that attracts locals in droves. If you’ve never seen the cheeseburger as a work of art, you’ll find it here with unexpected toppings like white truffle, chipotle red-pepper mayo, and a Southern staple: Housemade pimento cheese. Nearby, sample the upscale Mexican dishes at Cantina Laredo, famous for its house-made guacamole. For a change of pace, try Chi’s Too offering up great Asian fare. Arkansas-born Slim Chickens is another must-try and a favorite of locals. Enjoy juicy chicken tenders with a variety of dipping sauces as well as salads and wraps, set to the soundtrack of the blues. Get some great barbecue from Casey’s, located on Cantrell Road or a tasty sandwich at Jimmy’s Serious Sandwiches on Markham Street. Sit-down options include the casually elegant Italian food at Graffiti’s, the stylish, creative fare at Trio’s and the Mediterraneaninspired plates at Taziki’s.
SEE & DO
Midtown’s activities revolve around the expansive, emerald green space known as War Memorial Park, a 202-acre urban oasis. The home of the Arkansas State Fair
22 Visitors Guide | 2019
from 1868 to 1924, War Memorial was originally named Fair Park; sitting President Harry S. Truman was on hand when the name was changed in 1948. Today the park provides a variety of spaces and attractions for people from across the city. At its center, the park features War Memorial Stadium, the site of high school and small college football clashes in the fall. The stadium also hosts concerts and other special events, none bigger than the one Arkansas Razorback football home game per season, a tradition that goes back decades. During those events, tailgaters show up early and put out their spreads in designated spaces all over adjoining War Memorial Golf Course. The course itself, a 90-acre, 18-hole urban executive course (par 64) featuring Champion Bermuda greens, is well-used year round. Also calling the park home is the Little Rock Zoo, featuring 500 animals and 400 insects representing 200 species in all. The zoo has steadily expanded over the years to include specialty enclosures for big cats, lemurs, cheetahs, grizzly bears and apes. In fact, the apes exhibit is distinguished for being one of the few to feature all three categories of apes—orangutan, chimpanzees and gorillas. Nearby the zoo, find the park’s main playground offering picnic facilities, a fish pond and a splash pad, perfect for refueling and refreshing while taking in the sights.
The park’s southernmost edge holds another important family attraction, the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library and Learning Center. The six-acre $12 million complex goes well beyond books to include a teaching kitchen, a theater and a community room. The grounds themselves are a classroom of sorts, featuring a greenhouse, teaching garden and plants that reflect the diversity of Arkansas’s ecosystems, from hardwood trees to wetland vegetation. The landscaping accentuates an outdoor amphitheater used for a variety of educational talks and presentations.
SHOP
Midtown is mall central, starting with Park Plaza Shopping Mall, one of the original indoor shopping sites in Central Arkansas. As the cornerstone mall in the city, the multi-level Park Plaza has undergone renovations and expansions over the years to accommodate shoppers and its 80+ tenants alike, resulting in a fun shopping experience. Across the street is the Midtowne Shopping Center, offering a retail mix of apparel, home décor, dining and other amenities. Just across the intersection lies Park Avenue Shopping Center, one of the first true mixed-use developments in the city. Office, residential, retail and dining are all available here as well as one of the largest fitness centers in Little Rock.

RIVERDALE THE GIST:
Just west of downtown Little Rock lies Riverdale, an elegant district that combines stunning water views of the Arkansas River and many amenities for the active lifestyle. Development and investment has brought this area into full bloom where upscale corporate offices complexes, gated communities and swank apartments nestle among some of the oldest and most exclusive neighborhoods in the city. It’s upscale living at its best.
Pick your favorite sauce at Whole Hog, tee off at Rebsamen Golf Course and get creative at Cynthia East.
EAT
The district is crawling with great local dining, many spots having been in business for decades. Start with the Faded Rose, serving New Orleans cuisine, great steaks and a full bar. Another standard is Maddie’s Place, offering Ca jun fare in a casual atmosphere. Brave New Restaurant, an elegant spot for a business lunch or special night out offers award-winning food, a great wine list and views of the river. On the casual side, try Buffalo Grill, which serves up one of the best burgers in Arkansas or Pizza Café, which pairs dependable, satisfying pies with ice-cold beer. Both are come-as-you-are and have drawn raves for their food over the years. For barbecue, don’t miss the landmark Whole Hog Café or Cross Eyed Pig; the pulled pork sandwich at either place comes highly recommended. Finally, no trip to the neighborhood is complete without a visit to Loca Luna, boasting the city’s first wood-fired pizza oven and a casually sophisticated southern menu that’s been highlighted nationally. Opt for the skillet dinner with cheese dip for a meal that’s the stuff of Little Rock legend.
DRINK
Other stops in the neighborhood pair great wine, beer and libations along with tasty food. Ca jun's Wharf leads the parade here, an upscale seafood restaurant that perches on the banks of the Arkansas River. Enjoy oysters,

shrimp and great steaks along with creative cocktails, or take your refreshment on the deck overlooking the water while the band plays on. In the mood for something more casual? Wet your whistle at the Town Pump, a friendly dive bar that’s occupied the same space for years with a clientele to match. Reasonable drink prices, solid bar food and live music are the order of the day here. Finally, don’t miss The Fold, a botanas bar featuring excellent tacos and more or La Hacienda for a full menu of terrific Mexican dishes. Both spots have drinks to match the quality eats; try any of their frosty, hand-crafted margaritas and watch the world stroll by.
SEE AND DO
The neighborhood is full of attractions, starting with the very popular Rebsamen Golf Course, a municipal, 18-hole course featuring Champion Bermuda greens. Rebsamen also offers a nine-hole executive course on Tri-Dwarf Bermuda greens. If your passion lies astride a bike, check out the Big Dam Bridge at the north end of Rebsamen Park. Elevated 90 feet above the surface of the river, the Big Dam Bridge is the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in North America. It’s open to bicycle and foot traffic and is a popular photo spot as well. The Big Dam Bridge and Rebsamen Park are points on the Arkansas River Trail, an 88-mile loop that connects Little
Rock and North Little Rock. Murray Park, on the north side of the river, is the largest municipal park in Arkansas and is accessible on foot or bike from the Little Rock side by crossing the Big Dam Bridge. Other fitness attractions in the Riverdale neighborhood include Clubhaus Fitness, a modern health club offering tons of classes and equipment. Barefoot Studio can help you shed stress and get centered as one of the most popular yoga studios in town. Finally, catch the latest flick at Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema showing the latest movies and classic films in a recently upgraded space. You can even enjoy beer or wine with the show along with a variety of snack foods that go way beyond plain popcorn.

Cregeen’s Irish Pub offers an authentic Irish pub setting—the bar was built in Ireland and shipped to Argenta— with a full bar and menu. The craft brewery scene in the area rivals that of Little Rock with the longstanding Diamond Bear Brewing Company where you can try award-winning beer, great food and take a six pack to go. Flyway Brewing is another top-notch brewery, making a name for itself in the market with house-made pretzels and the popular Bluewing Berry Wheat beer. Based in Springdale, the Core Public House has a selection of locally made beer as well as a full menu and live music. The best dive bars in the area are at Four Quarter and Reno’s Argenta Cafe. Both stay open late, have food you’d eat sober and are a magnet for locals.

The Vue on Riverfront COMING SOON! A new $25-million development, The Vue on Riverfront, will soon transform the North Little Rock skyline providing exceptional views in a premiere live-work-play environment. Doug Meyer and Dave Bruning, partners in TerraForma Real Estate Development, are hoping to break ground on The Vue by the end of 2018, the first segment of a three-part project. The fourstory development will bring 204 units of one-and two-bedroom apartments to North Little Rock’s Argenta neighborhood. “Millennials are flocking to apartments,” Meyer said. “‘Pride of ownership’ has changed over the last 20 years; when millennials get off work, apartments are more and more important because of the access to amenities nearby.” “Ours will have the running and the bike trail right next to it, which is fabulous. We’re going to have a dog park we’re going to have exercise facilities. I think you can even have your dry cleaning picked up there. And the views are just going to be stunning.” The two other components of the overall development are not yet formalized, but Meyer did confirm TerraForma was in talks with a hotel group and a restaurant group for the remaining ground. He said development in the Argenta neighborhood spells big things for the future. “I moved here in 1987 and Argenta has just kind of lagged along, but all of a sudden, it’s seemed to just blossom,” he said. “I credit Mayor Joe Smith and everything he’s doing down there. He has been extremely supportive of the downtown area, the Argenta area. That’s critical to a developer.”

MEET THE NEW ROCKERS
From El Salvador to California, Louisiana and New York, these Central Arkansans came from far and wide to settle in the Natural State. Meet four non-natives who chose to plant roots here, and find out why. BY SYD HAYMAN
NANCY NOLAN One of Nancy Nolan’s first experiences as
a Little Rock resident included receiving a welcome-to-the-neighborhood cake and iced tea. The Flushing neighborhood, Queens-born commercial art photographer, who spent a bulk of her upbringing in Virginia Beach, was at first caught a little off-guard by Arkansas’s southern hospitality. But it was much of that kindness and sense of community that led her to stay. She now calls SoMa, Little Rock’s South Main Street district, home. “It’s the best-kept secret, the neighborhood for sure, in Little Rock and Arkansas,” said Nolan, who has lived in Arkansas since 1998 and in SoMa since 2001. “I was amazed when I moved here.” Nolan is a fan of nearly all SoMa has to offer. There’s The Green Corner Store, for instance, which serves up kombucha on tap and also is a neighbor to Nolan—her loft and studio are just above the shop. There’s also South on Main, whose friendly crew feels more like a family when they remember her and her sons’ names. Nolan’s professional experience included years in Atlanta and New York as a fashion photographer. Living in SoMa, however, has resulted in her shooting more friends, family and community than she’s ever done before. “It’s fostered a sense of community for me that I’ve never had,” she said. “It’s kind of like I found my tribe.” One aspect of SoMa that leaves Nolan in awe is its presence and support of female-owned businesses. Nolan has witnessed Sally Mengel’s Loblolly ice cream catapult into a brick-andmortar sensation, and she’s seen how Anita Davis’ hand in revitalizing the area led to The Bernice Garden, Moxy Modern Mercantile and even Nolan’s own studio. “I have loved being part of and watching the incredible influence these ladies have had in the development of this area,” she said. “I am truly proud of this community.” SoMa’s annual traditions make the neighborhood great, too. Nolan’s current favorite, she said, is the Mardi Gras parade. “It’s so grassroots. It’s so wrong sometimes that it’s so right,” she said. “Everybody gets crazy, and I get to throw out my beads from my windows up there sometimes.” Nolan soon learned that the cake and tea from years ago was a way to show support and inclusion, behaviors that she sees from SoMa residents and business owners, too. “For some reason, this neighborhood is really cemented in each other and everybody’s helping everybody to do well,” she said.

“IT’S FOSTERED A SENSE OF COMMUNITY FOR ME THAT I’VE NEVER HAD. IT’S KIND OF LIKE I FOUND MY TRIBE.”
“I DROVE ACROSS THE RIVER, AND ALL OF THE BUILDINGS WERE EMPTY. SO I THOUGHT, ‘THIS COULD BE COOL.’ SO I SAW IT AS, REALLY, A BLANK CANVAS. I STARTED MASTER PLANNING THE DOWNTOWN AND REALLY DEVELOPED IT WITH SOME PARTNERS AND FRIENDS, AND REDEVELOPED THE COMMUNITY.” JOHN GAUDIN Inclusive. Tight-knit. Fulfilling. That’s how John Gaudin describes Argenta, North Little Rock’s bustling
downtown community. Gaudin would know a thing or two about the area: The Argenta Wealth Management president has called it home since 2005 and Arkansas home since 1982. As a third-floor resident of Argenta Place, which houses Cregeen’s Irish Pub and his office, Gaudin is steps away from work, dining and more. Upon landing in Little Rock, the St. Martinville, La., native soon discovered an array of opportunities that led to an investment career. He and his husband, Corky Patton, decided on a move to Argenta when they were stumped on finding a downtown Little Rock spot and were recommended to look just north of the river. “I drove across the river, and all of the buildings were empty,” Gaudin said. “So I thought, ‘This could be cool.’ So I saw it as, really, a blank canvas. I started master planning the downtown and really developed it with some partners and friends, and redeveloped the community.” As an artist, owning a gallery nearby was important to Gaudin’s development of the area. He now owns Argenta Gallery and lives just steps away from what he calls the best gallery in the state—Greg Thompson Fine Art. He also serves as board president of the ACANSA arts festival, the annual fall celebration of the arts. Gaudin spends his weekends embracing the walkability of the community and playing host to friends. When he fancies a night out, he takes advantage of local gems like Crush Wine Bar, Capeo or Kamikaito. Gaudin’s most visited spot? The Joint, which offers entertainment, a darn good German chocolate latte, and the opportunity for Gaudin to produce its Argenta Acoustic Music Series and the Potluck & Poison Ivy storytelling series. “Tuesday and Wednesday nights are comedy nights. I come to that. Thursday nights are the artists series, of which I produce two,” he said. “On Friday and Saturday, night is [comedy act] The Main Thing. It’s the best entertainment in the state, every Friday and Saturday right here in the Joint.” Gaudin credits Argenta for shaping not only his career but also his personal growth. “Everybody is excited about being here,” he said. “The opportunities for continued growth are really tremendous. There’s hope here. There’s just a different attitude, a positive attitude, on a daily basis that just permeates the community.

JEAN BLOCK
“WE NOT ONLY ENJOY BEING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, BUT WE VERY MUCH FEEL LIKE WE WANT TO BE PART OF THE GROWTH OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE SUCCESS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD.” 38 Visitors Guide | 2019
To Jean Block, her neighborhood isn’t just the Governor’s Mansion Historic District, in which her house is situated— it’s the entirety of downtown Little Rock. Block, a Mill Valley, Calif., native who serves as the chief legal officer for Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority, moved to Arkansas in 2002 and into her current neighborhood in 2010 with her musician husband, Rodney. “It’s been quite a joy to see the tremendous growth in every regard—to restaurants, shops, to outdoor offerings, whether you want to rent a bike or rent a kayak,” she said. “Everything seems to have exploded, and now SoMa, our neighborhood, is just the happening place.” Since settling in Little Rock, Block has been involved with numerous organizations or boards, many of which have kept her close to her downtown neighborhood. She has chaired the Arkansas Literary Festival, served the Arkansas Repertory Theatre's board of directors, and spent 10 years working closely with the Historic Arkansas Museum. “The Historic Arkansas Museum is near and dear to my heart, really because it has a wide range of offerings, whether they’re food-related or related to cultural events or people,” she said. “They’re offering things I don’t think anybody else in the city is offering.” When she’s not volunteering, Block spends her free time dining at a variety of local favorites, such as Table 28, ZaZa and La Terraza Rum & Lounge, browsing Local Colour gallery and Boswell Mourot Fine Art, or biking and running the river trail. She also frequents South on Main, where her husband often plays, to take in the range of music it offers. “It feels very vibrant. There is always something really fun happening,” she said of the area. For about the first seven years that Block was in Little Rock, she was certain she’d eventually return to California. But after establishing professional roots and experiencing Little Rock’s quality of life, she realized she’s right at home. “We not only enjoy being in the neighborhood,” she said, “but we very much feel like we want to be part of the growth of the neighborhood and the success of the neighborhood.”
ESPERANZA MASSANA-CRANE
An opportunity brought Esperanza MassanaCrane to the state of Arkansas, and it was even more opportunities—and the people—that made her stay. There was the chance to come to Arkansas from her native San Salvador, El Salvador, for one, to attend Harding University. Then there was the opportunity to take a gig at CJRW and, most recently, the chance to serve the Arkansas Economic Development Commission as marketing director. “Happiness is what you make of it, whether it’s a job or a location,” she said. “You just have to find the good in everything and make it yours. It’s a choice.” One choice Massana-Crane is certain of is calling Hillcrest home. For about a year, she and her husband, Christopher, have shared their 1930s Hillcrest digs, which has proximity to nearby shops and work. Plus, the neighborhood is ideal for walking their dogs, Martini and Elphie. “It has this very European flair,” Massana-Crane said of her first impressions of the area. “I loved the fact that people walked. I loved how green it was and, of course, the architecture.” Living close to some of Little Rock’s most celebrated restaurants isn’t so bad, either. Massana-Crane frequents eateries such as Cheers in the Heights, kBird and The Pantry Crest. Her and Christopher’s Friday night tradition includes a visit to Dave’s Place in downtown Little Rock, which serves a mean Alfredo rice, she said. “You can bring your own wine, and they have jazz, and the menu changes,” she said. “That’s the only time Dave has dinner. He’ll have, for instance, a German theme, or he’ll have an Italian theme, or he’ll have Greek.” Massana-Crane has a mishmash of local favorites that serve her interests. When she needs to buy a gift, she’ll visit Box Turtle. To stay active, she spends her time doing Zumba, hiphop classes or swimming at the Athletic Club. She also enjoys berry-picking at Wye Mountain. It wasn’t solely the opportunities, however, that led to Massana-Crane sticking around. While she had to adjust to being away from her family, she developed a new kind of family that helped her call Little Rock home. “It took me a long time because we’re so close to family, but I think whenever I discovered my friends that I have and they started becoming my family,” she said, “that’s when I think I realized it’s really the people that made the difference for me.”
“IT HAS THIS VERY EUROPEAN FLAIR. I LOVED THE FACT THAT PEOPLE WALKED. I LOVED HOW GREEN IT WAS AND, OF COURSE, THE ARCHITECTURE.”

RIDE ON!
GET SOME FRESH AIR
It’s called ‘The Natural State’ for a reason. A visit isn’t complete without a walk through a wooded trail, biking the Arkansas River Trail System, a climb up Pinnacle or a picnic at a local park. Here are a few great spots to connect with the great outdoors. entral Arkansas is a great place to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you enjoy biking, hiking, sports or just relaxing and taking in the sights and sounds of nature, there’s bound to be a nearby escape to meet your needs. Burns Park in North Little Rock is the largest municipal park in the state at 1,700 acres. Get in a game of soccer, golf, tennis, disc golf, baseball or softball at the public fields, tennis court and golf course, or take a stroll through the miles of paved nature trails. Kids will enjoy playgrounds and the legendary Rocket Slide. Burns Park also offers a helping of out-of-the-ordinary attractions and activities: Tour a pre-Civil War cabin, stroll the covered bridge, launch your boat, ride a horse or enjoy the dog park. Want an unparalleled view of the river and Little Rock skyline? Meander your way up to Emerald Park on the north shore of the river. It’s a 135-acre park near the University of Arkansas Pulaski Technical College with gorgeous scenic views along the river bluff. Central Arkansas residents on the Little Rock side of the river have gorgeous rolling hills and green space along the bank of the Arkansas River, highlighted by Murray Park. On Saturdays in the spring and fall you’ll find the soccer fields filled with kids; many pavilions are available for rental; the dog park is always buzzing; and several miles of paved walking and biking trails are high-traffic areas. Take a walk across the Big Dam Bridge, spanning the Arkansas River; at 4,226 feet in length, it’s the longest pedestrian/bicycle bridge in North America that has never been used by trains or motor vehicles. On the other side of the Interstate 440 bridge, find Two Rivers Park, an unspoiled preserve that’s a haven for bicyclists and nature lovers alike. Nearby, on Rebsamen Park Road, you’ll find Rebsamen Golf Course, which is open to the public. You can tee-off there or at the War Memorial Park Golf Course near War Memorial Stadium, which is home to local sporting events, a craft fair and concerts. War Memorial Park also offers a recreation center with a swimming pool, a splash pad and playground and is home to the Little Rock Zoo. Allsopp Park in Hillcrest is a great green space to get lost on it’s meandering, wooded paths. The kids will love the playground, the baseball field and explorable creek. MacArthur Park, downtown, provides a refreshing escape for city dwellers that’s also home to the Arkansas Arts Center, MacArthur Museum of Military History and a lively dog park. The Arkansas River Trail System is popular with both runners and cyclists. It meanders through Little Rock and North Little Rock’s parks along the river and is made up of 88 miles of trails that stretch as far as Conway and Maumelle. One of the more heavily used sections of the trail is a 15.6-mile loop from the Clinton Presidential Bridge to the Big Dam Bridge and back. One of the area’s most celebrated outdoor adventures is a climb up Pinnacle Mountain. The peak rises more than 1,000 feet over the valley below. You can get to the top two ways, by the East or West Summit trails, or take an easy hike around the Base Trail. The way up is marked and will be steadily populated on a pretty day. Plan to spend some time at the top taking in the spectacular view.

Plan a quick escape to the Spa City to enjoy everything from horse racing to natural hot springs, historic landmarks, the best pizza in the state, festivals, stellar bike trails and much more!
Say hi to Tony at Deluca's Pizza. Relax on historic Bathhouse Row. Mark your calendar for the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.
ew places in Arkansas have as colorful a history as Hot Springs, and nowhere is that more pronounced than in the historic downtown district. The first national park in the nation, local preservation efforts have retained much of the charm of bygone eras. Stroll Bathhouse Row and visit one of the many unique shops, book a massage and take a dip in the natural hot springs, or take time to sip a craft brew at the Superior Bathhouse & Brewery. Hot Springs’ romantic past also includes being the Chicago White Sox’ one-time spring training home and a haven for another Chicago luminary, Al Capone, and his gangster peers, Charles “Lucky” Luciano and Owen “Owney” Madden. Learn all about them and their time in the city at the Gangster Museum of America and the Hot Springs Baseball Trailer, then raise a glass to hero and scoundrel alike at the Ohio Club, where many of them partied. In the spring, don’t miss Oaklawn Racing & Gaming, the city’s premier thoroughbred racing venue and gaming facility, particularly during the sold-out weekends of the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby, which are important tuneups for the nation’s top breeders preparing for a run at the Triple Crown. Lovers of live music can also enjoy great shows as part of Oaklawn’s Finish Line Theater Concert Series. You won’t go hungry in Hot Springs: Start the day at the Pancake House then lunch at McClard’s Bar-B-Que, both of which are national institutions. Pizza is a big deal in town represented by SQZBX Brewery & Pizza Joint, New Yorkstyle Deluca’s Pizzeria, Chicago-style Rocky’s Corner and the something-in-between, Rod’s Pizza Cellar. Great steaks and seafood are the ticket on the water at Fisherman’s Wharf and imaginative cuisine on display daily at Luna Bella. There are so many great festivals in the Spa City, including

This year, mountain bikers and other outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to an important new tourism attraction: Phase one of Hot Springs’ world-class Northwood Trails will be dedicated the weekend of November 16-18 in conjunction with running and mountain-biking competitions. Visit Hot Springs began construction in November 2017 on a 44.6mile system of mountain biking trails in the city-owned Northwoods/Cedar Glades properties in the northern section of Hot Springs. There will be a ribbon cutting the afternoon of Nov. 16, held at the Water Works Trail Head, followed by a “Slow Roll” bike ride on Park Avenue and Whittington Boulevard. On Nov. 17, there will be a public ribbon cutting and group ride at the Cedar Glades portion of the trails system. Nov. 18 will feature more biking events at the Cedar Glades portion of Northwoods Trails with the annual Attila the Hun Bike Race. Phase two will complete the system of first-class biking trails in the Cedar Glades area north of Whittington Avenue, an area that incorporates pristine forested hills and three lakes. Everywhere you look in Little Rock, you’ll find the fingerprints of the artistic individuals who make us proud, and since you’ll probably want to take something home as a souvenir, here’s a guide to artists we love, and where to find their work. 1. Sally Nixon’s illustrations may seem
familiar because, well, she’s an international success story from right here in Little Rock, and you’ve probably seen her work on websites like Vice and Huffington Post; in Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter; and on the shelves of your local book store. Grab a copy of her book “Houseplants and Hot Sauce: A Seek-and-Find Book for GrownUps” locally at Moxy Modern Mercantile or Domestic Domestic.
2. Christy Ward, who calls her line of
jewelry Robinson Lane, has been a local favorite since 2002. Her delicate metal stamping and clever phrasing gives her creations a classic elegance. She loves to create meaningful pieces and is “inspired by all facets of life: family, travels, music, adventure and the day-to-day.” Find her work at The Green Corner Store and Good Earth Garden Center.
3. Jennifer Perren’s whimsical, often
impish pottery delights locals with a wicked sense of humor. Perren got back in touch with clay at the Arkansas Arts Center in 2017, and now her work is a resident at the Center’s gift shop. You can find one of her anthropomorphic pinch or coil pots there— or at Rivermarket Books and Gifts, South Main Creative and the Historic Arkansas Museum Shop.
4. Myriam Fa jita Saavedra’s bold
metalwork is as eye-catching as it is finely made. She describes her colorful necklaces, brooches and more as “playful and provocative,” and her motif of sensuallooking mouths speaks to that. “My work combines my love of neutrals, geometric design and that sparkle from queer nightlife,” she said. Find Saavedra’s work, dubbed Myriad of Mischief, at Esse Purse Museum.
5. Erin Lang learned to screen print in
high school, and she took it to the next level when she started her own T-shirt business, ArkieStyle. Lang’s designs are her own, and she prints from her home. Grab one of her clever Arkansas-themed shirts and you’ll look just like a native. Find ArkieStyle at The Green Corner Store, The Freckled Frog and Box Turtle.
6. Krystal Cornelius, the creative behind
Krystal Bijoux, combines fantasy, glam and entomology with her dazzling brooches. Her bejeweled mermaids, dragons, insects and Army men will captivate you, but she’s most proud of her series of Black women cameos. “Representation is important,” she said. “It is very powerful seeing positive images of people who look like you, especially when that is not the norm.” Find Krystal Bijoux at Moxy Modern Mercantile.

FOODIE SCENE
GR AB A (BAR) BITE Those five-course beer-tasting dinners have their place, but sometimes you simply want a cold craft beer and a quality snack. Luckily, the craft beer scene in Central Arkansas can deliver on both counts. BY MELISSA TUCKER
The local beer scene has steadily grown so much that hitting happy hour after work or staying out late with friends is quite possibly the most delicious it’s ever been. Check out some of these favorites for beer and a bite.
SAUSAGE FEST!
BOUDIN
Rebel Kettle Easily accessible from the interstate, Rebel Kettle is crushing it with Ca jun-inspired fare and a seasonal line-up of their own craft beers. The brewery has also expanded to include an outdoor patio with a stage for live music. The most outstanding menu item might be the boudin, served with creole mustard and saltines. Or as they call it: Housemade Bou(Damn, Son!). It’s a fitting name, because this kind of authentic Louisiana deliciousness is a rare find around here. 822 E. Sixth St., rebelkettle.com.
HOUSE-MADE SAUSAGES
Fassler Hall
DIP IT @ LOST 40
54 Visitors Guide | 2019
Fassler Hall Across from the bus station and just a few blocks from the River Market, Fassler Hall is quickly becoming a late-night hot spot. With large picnic-table-style seating inside and a huge patio with games like baggo and oversized jenga, it’s a laid-back place to meet people you know and people you don’t. The piping hot, house-made sausages can be had until midnight, and the bar stays open until 2 a.m. Dogs are also welcome. 311 E. Capitol Ave., fasslerhall.com.
CHEESE DIP
Lost Forty Brewing If you can’t make it to Lost 40 for all-day Sunday brunch, the next best thing would be the happy hour, for the Petit Jean bacon cheese dip appetizer. This cheese dip is so rich it’ll have you thinking about licking the skillet until it’s gone. Lost 40 also has a quaint, backyard vibe where it’s common to share tables with strangers, sample a few beers and then head out to the next thing. It’s perfect for pre-movie dining or after work with friends. 501 Byrd St., facebook.com/lost40beer/.
PRETZEL TREE
Flyway Brewing, NLR If you want a dish that’ll make your eyes light up like Christmas, the pretzel tree should be your gift to yourself. Well, it’s probably best to share. It’s four large, house-made pretzels with seasonings dangling from hooks above the dipping sauces of your choice. You could go sweet or savory (or both!) with options like the chocolate stout sauce, Creole mustard or honey mustard. And while you’re there, have the brewery’s flagship Bluewing Berry
Wheat and play some games. 314 Maple St., flywaybrewing.com.
THE WAFFLER
Stone’s Throw Brewing Seems like Stone’s Throw always has something new to try and, of all the breweries, makes the most of the local artisan food scene. The location may be small, but it’s still crammed with games and other diversions. The menu has names you’ll recognize like Kent Walker cheese, Geek Eats hummus and Wicked Mix. But the most eye-catching item would be the waffle sliders. Choose from breaded chicken or beef inside a bun of waffles. Served with tater tots. Yes, please. 402 E. Ninth St., stonesthrowbeer.com.
CHEESE CURDS
Diamond Bear, NLR Though it’s one of the longestrunning craft breweries in the area, Diamond Bear has still got it. The brewery has plenty of elbow room, a spacious patio and a back room for private parties. It also reels them in from time to time with trivia and glitter beer. The brats and burgers are on-point, but where else are you going to find fried Wisconsin cheese
curds? Much like a mozzarella stick but without the “stick,” these puppies get some Southern flair with a side of ranch. 600 N. Broadway St., diamondbear.com.
THE DOUBLE
South on Main If you like to feel fancy while drinking your beer, South on Main can fit the bill. But if you’d like to roll up your sleeves and have a double pimento cheese burger with bacon jam and fries, South on Main can do that, too. And, oh man, you totally should. Start with a local beer or a cocktail, and then fill yourself up the rest of the way with the aforementioned double burger entree. We could make other recommendations, but honestly, order whatever sounds good, you will love it. 1304 Main St., southonmain.com.

FO ODIE SCENE
R AISING THE BAR As the Little Rock and North Little Rock restaurant scene has blossomed over the last decade, so has its craft cocktail culture BY ROSEMARY HALLMARK
TIKI TIME!
Various iterations of classic cocktails are readily available and reliably satisfying, while bartenders citywide are consistently rolling out new menus peppered with imaginative original recipes. Whether you like your cocktails sweet or bitter, shaken or stirred, there’s something for everyone right here in Central Arkansas.
THE SEERSUCKER
Capital Bar and Grill This bourbon, Aperol, and apricot sipper is as sophisticated and Southern as the hotel from whence it came. The Seersucker is Little Rock’s interpretation of a traditional New Orleans Sazerac, and it’s best enjoyed from the Capital Hotel’s balcony porch on a breezy, balmy evening.
GINGER MOJITO
La Terraza Rum and Lounge The Venezuelan restaurant in the heart of Hillcrest boasts not only one of the best patios in town, but also an entire mojito menu ranging from fruity (think pineapple and coconut) to spicy. For a more complex flavor profile, try the Ginger Mojito, which features fresh ginger-infused Don Q Cristal rum and unstrained lime, mint and sugar, for a sweet drink with a refreshingly sharp bite.
SMOKY & TASTY!
56 Visitors Guide | 2019
GREG HENDERSON
COFFEE AND CIGARETTES
South on Main If the cocktail menu at South on Main is, like the restaurant and its musical guests, a study in southern soul, the Coffee & Cigarettes is the drink equivalent of a smoky juke joint. Cognac and rye give it a full-bodied base, while caffe amaro gives it its coffee flavor, and lemon balances with surprising brightness. The tobaccoinfused sugared rim adds a sweet-andsmoky grit that will remind you of your grandfather’s cigar box.
Indoor. Outdoor. Encore!
We do it all — Fabrics Design Labor Everything!
MAI TAI
Big Orange The bartenders at Big Orange in Midtown offer up a rotating seasonal cocktail menu, as well as excellent twists on classics like the Old Fashioned and Corpse Reviver. But for a drink that feels like a vacation in a glass, the blend of rums, orgeat and Curacao in the Mai Tai will cure what ails you. The traditional tiki mug and umbrella garnish don’t hurt either.
BLO ODY MARY
Four Quarter Bar, NLR If you’re looking for a spot with a laid-back vibe that serves up cocktails without the pretention, head across the river to Four Quarter Bar. The Argenta bar and restaurant is a popular spot for live bands, bar food, and a boozy brunch. Their crave-worthy Bloody Mary is a vodka-soaked, pork rind-topped, miracle drink with the perfect blend of spicy, savory goodness.

BOTTLED NEGRONI
The Pantry Crest Negroni lovers won’t be disappointed with The Pantry’s house-bottled blend of gin, Campari, and vermouth—it’s been a customer favorite on the menu for a while now with good reason. The drink itself is refreshingly bitter, and to some, an acquired taste. But you have to admit, the cute little bottle and printed tag are downright fun.
TE X AS T WO-STEP
Local Lime Saddle up to the white leather barstools at Local Lime for artisan and barrel-aged cocktails, from classics like palomas and Pisco sours to inspired originals. The Texas Two-Step is an elevated riff on a classic margarita, with its blend of smoky mescal, spicy jalapeno triple sec, floral basil syrup, lime and the tex-mex flair that Local Lime is known for.
