About Arkís
ARKÍS is an awarded, progressive architecture firm that has been in operation since 1997. ARKÍS’s works and projects span all levels of architecture, planning and design. In addition, ARKÍS architects offer consulting on sustainable design, BREEAM assessments, real estate management and building information systems. ARKÍS has extensive experience with projects in planning and architecture, but from the firm’s founding, ARKÍS has executed numerous large and complex projects, both in Iceland and internationally. The office of ARKÍS architects is located in Reykjavik, Iceland. The firm currently employs 21 people. The employees of ARKÍS have a wide variety of backgrounds, both in terms of education and work experience. The diverse backgrounds of the firm’s experienced staff make ARKÍS one of the leading architecture firms in Iceland and highly qualified to successfully execute projects at all stages of architecture, design, planning and consultancy.
To ARKÍS, cost consciousness is of utmost importance. From initial defenition of the project and up until the end of construction, ARKÍS collaborates closely with its clients on monitoring project costs. At the completion of the work, costs are reviewed with the client and compared to initial estimates. ARKÍS emphasizes sustainability and green design and seeks to maintain a balance between nature, architecture and society while quality and practicality are maximized. Material selection and design decisions are made consciously with an environmental focus and concern for operating costs and maintenance during the building‘s lifetime. The works of ARKÍS architects span all levels of architecture, planning and design. Projects are of all sizes and types; from single family residences to shopping centers, hotels and universities, planning and consultation.
ARKÍS emphasizes that all design documents be of the highest quality and accuracy possible. Furthermore, ARKÍS stresses close collaborations with the client and with other members of the design team. A central file server accessible to client and the design team is a valuable tool to provide mutual access to relevant design documents. During the design process, state of the art technology is utilized by ARKÍS. ARKÍS is equipped with quality hardware and software, connected to three powerful servers. All projects are designed using the following CAD and BIM software, depending on the project requirements: AutoCAD, Architectural Desktop, REVIT or M-Color. 3D renderings and animations are prepared using 3D Studio Max and FormZ. ARKÍS can meet any demands for hardware and software. ARKÍS strength is embedded in the firm‘s size, professional ambition and extensive experience of the employees. Moreover, the firm‘s diverse project portfolio, quality management system and state of the art technology are illustrative of the substance of ARKÍS architects. ARKÍS is a fully licensed office in Iceland and carries all insurance mandated by Icelandic law, in addition to full employee coverage. Insurances are serviced by VÍS Insurance Ltd.
BIM (Building Information Model) Extensive experience has been gathered in-house at ARKÍS in the use of BIM systems for architectural design. ARKÍS architects have designed several buildings employing BIM as a design- and project management tool for both large and small projects. Quality Management System ARKÍS architect’s quality management goals are to have complete oversight and control of work processes in the operations of the firm and in communications with clients. The Quality Management System describes the management structure, division of responsibilities and work processes. The Quality Management System is organized to the certified according to ISO 9001:2008. Adjustments of ARKÍS architect’s Quality Management System are underway with the aim of being fully certified in the near future.

Sustainability and Green Design - BREEAM / LEED Qualifications With sustainable design solutions and an ecological approach current needs are met while working in a responsible way towards future generation‘s wellbeing. Green design and planning improve the performance of buildings with respect to natural resources, such as energy, water and building materials, while decreasing the negative impact of buildings on the environment and on public health. Responsible green design can result in lower operational costs for buildings and landscapes and improve the development’s value with a positive image and more marketing possibilities. Furthermore, strategic decisions made during the design phase can dramatically decrease negative environmental side effects, both from construction and from the daily operations of buildings and manmade environments. Among international assessment systems for buildings, BREEAM and LEED have become most commonly used. ARKÍS architects are experienced working with both the BREEAM and LEED standards. In addition employees of ARKÍS have been trained as BREEAM Assessors.
ARKÍS architects apply knowledge and experience of sustainability and green design in the firm‘s projects, both architectural design and planning projects. ARKÍS‘s specialists have managed policy making for Green Neighborhoods for the City of Reykjavik, taught courses in sustainability and green design at Reykjavik University, and have written course materials for green building materials courses for the Dawn of Sustainability project. Among the partners of ARKÍS architects are: Bjorn Gudbrandsson Licensed International Assessor, and Egill M. Gudmundsson Licensed Communities Assessor.
