1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS 1.1 Point / Line / Plane 1.2 Mass 1.3 Frame & Infill

The three basic defining elements of design.

1.1 Point / Line / Plane Points create line, lines create plane.

Folding cardboard created an organic geometric shape.

The straightforward shape to show the “point”, “line”, “plane” together is the triangle. the cardboard could be cut though not cut off. The incisions create the neat geometric shapes with them own organic orders. Hence, points are both geometric and organic. Lines are shaping in geometric and organic. Planes are kept geometric and organic.

1.2 Mass Lots / Solid

There is 2D drawing about underground space. It shows the power of the water. Water is soft and strong. The organic space is the dance of nature. The underground is a huge mass environment.

The real mass architectures are built by geometric shapes mostly.

1.3 Frame & Infill Infill is limited by frame.

The concept of the model is one Chinese word – “ 和而不同 “ (He Er Bu Tong) which means be harmony with the differences. There are geometric frame and organic infill. The frames stand on one line though the distances of the frame gaps are different. The colour of the whole model is all white, even the frame and infill are two different materials. The model is stable with the changeable infill shapes.

The changeable infill idea was from this house. Frame limits infill though it does not only inside the frame.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND 2.1 2.2 2.3

Site Analysis Conceptacle Model Final Design

PAVILION DESIGN

2.1 Site Analysis Herrig Island is the only island located on the Yarra River which is hidden just 3km from the city. There are nature landscape and art sculptures which could be accessed only by boat. To maintain the tranquil environment in the island, the new design should use the natural materials like the sculptures in the island now. It was a basalt quarry in the last century which was filled with silt dredged from the river. The Herring Island created a shortcut created to lessen the likelihood of flooding. The levee banks around the island were rebuilt and trees were replanted in 1935 after the island been submerged in November 1934. The site I choose is overgrown with weeds. There is no tall tree growing on the site. Though tall trees are planted on the margin of the site. The secret could be hidden naturally with the environment. The elevation near the pavilion is higher than the ground where the pavilion would be built. It also could help the secret hiding.

2.2 Conceptacle Model The development of learning from previous exercises.

Contours with Site Location 1:2000

Main Paths on Herring Island with Tree Cover 1:2000

The site is chosen to keep secret. With the enhancing contours in the one side, the pavilion is located at a low-lying place relatively. It is also not far away from the path on the Herring Island, visitors could find the pavilion easily to enjoy this interesting building.

The idea from the “Frame & Infill is suitable for the Herring Island Pavilion. The different height frames work wellproportioned. The conceptacle model tried how this form could work for the pavilion space.

2.3 Final Design Crush of A Girl

The pavilion is called “Crush of A Girl”. The frame is the limit of the girl, she has the constraint from outside. What she has to do, how she has to be. Though she met someone, someone made she have a crush. Her heart had leaped faster when she had the crush. The inside of her had been totally different with her outside. It is the infill, the crush difference. These two dissimilar sides of the girl are both the girl. Without any of the sides, it is not this girl. It could say, these two sides work harmoniously for the girl. It is the concept of “ 和而不同 ” (He Er Bu Tong) which I believed in the third exercise as well.

The steam wood curing infill of the pavilion create the obstacle when the visitors walk through it. It is the same feeling when the girl had her crush. She would like to tell someone her heart, though there are too many hindrances. Like the visitors would walk out in the end, she would tell the person who makes her have the crush.

3.0 REFLECTION This studio is the first studio since I go to university. It is harder than I thought before. There is too many stuff need to be considered. The software using technique of mine has been improved though it still need be improved much more. With the searching precedent, I broaden my horizon. I thought it would let me only copy if I look others work. But during this semester’s studying, we did blogs for every exercise. I have investigated numbers of images of each theme. I did not copy any of the work directly, I used the part of the form, system, concept ‌ The most important, I learned how these outstanding designers think the design. There are lots of work should be improved if I could do it again. The concept is good though the method to present this concept is not effective. Especially the final presentation of the final design is not that successful. Except increasing the presentation skills, I need to do more thinking about what is the main points of my work. I need to put the most important information on the presentation board. This is not only for the student work but also for the further design in the real work in the future.
