This studio was developed to address the concept of resiliency as it relates to design at multiple scales (macro to micro) and from various points of view (social, economic, environmental). The studio considered the city of Lynn, Massachusetts as a case study, focusing on applying resilient strategies to the redevelopment of the city’s underutilized waterfront - an area threatened dramatically by sea level rise and other projected climate change risks. After researching and analyzing the social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities of the region, students tested the potential for resilient design by focusing on the development of a resilient vision plan. Students then divided into teams and developed (3) design concepts that tested traditional building programs through the lens of resilience: K-12 Education, Wastewater Resources, and Emergency Response Systems.
