And what is a backyard BBQ without the gathering of loved ones enjoying the perfect combination of seafood, seasonal vegetables and meat on a stick, washed down with a refreshing cold beverage? Rivertown spent an afternoon shadowing the talented Kevin Reilly, owner and Executive Chef at Roost in Sparkill and Sous Chef Stephen Ryan, to discover simple, yet delicious BBQ recipes for your next summer gathering.

Filet Mignon Skewers with Chimichurri
Serves four Ingredients: 2 lbs cleaned filet mignon, cut into 1 ½ inch cubes 4 heavy wood or metal skewers 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper Method: Thread meat on skewers packing tightly, about 8 oz each. Brush with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use. When ready to grill, remove from refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes. Grill on very hot coals about 4 minutes each side for medium-rare. Cooking time will depend on how close your grill is and the heat of your coals. For the Chimichurri: 1 cup packed, cleaned flat-leaf parsley 6 sprigs fresh oregano, stripped off stems 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 large shallot, minced Pinch of hot pepper flakes or fresh fresno chili ½ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice ½ tablespoon aged sherry wine vinegar Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper Method Rough chop parsley and oregano with garlic and shallots. Place in a bowl with the rest of the ingredients adding salt and pepper to taste. Reserve at room temperature.

Vegetable Skewers
Serves four Alternate a variety of seasonal vegetables like zucchini, yellow squash, red/green peppers and red onion, all cut in 2-inch pieces on a skewer, brush with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Note: If using hard vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes or carrots blanch them in salted water to soften before skewering. Grill over hot coals for about 8 minutes until lightly charred and serve immediately.
Grilled Lobster with Garlic Butter
Serves four Ingredients: 4 – 1 ¼ lb lobsters – lightly steamed and chilled 2 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt & fresh black pepper Method: Steam lobster 5 to 6 minutes and chill (most good fish markets will do this free of charge). They should be a little raw inside. Twist off claws and knuckles and set aside. Split bodies down the middle to separate. Rinse out head cavity with cold water to remove liver. Keep red roe (eggs) intact if female. Cover claws with a clean towel or plastic film and crack with a mallet or back of a heavy knife. Refrigerate until ready to grill. When ready, brush lobster all over with olive oil and sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper. Grill over very hot coals for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Serve immediately with garlic butter on the side. Enjoy!

6 Dexter Plaza, Pearl River, NY Ringing in as the biggest brewery in Rockland, it’s hard to not find seating, even during the weekends. Defiant has ample space to hold your private events and parties. Can you think of a better place than a brewery to ring in a birthday? Open mic is held on Sundays, and trivia happens on Thursdays. On top of the massive space inside, there is also outdoor seating for those nicer days. They have a large tap selection as well as cans, bottles, growlers, and even half-kegs available for take-home purchase. And for those who are not fans of beer, they also offer wine and cider as well as their ever-famous root beer, sans alcohol. You can’t go wrong with the menu, but definitely try the cornbread. It’s a must-have. Make note: this joint is cash only. There is an ATM onsite, but always better to come prepared.
District 96 Beer Factory
395 S. Main Street, New City, NY Burgers and beer, such a classic combination! We love District 96 for their hazy, juicy IPAs paired with The BURGER Loft burgers. This New City brewery and burger spot, right at the beginning of Main Street, is a local favorite. They’re most popular for the big selection of IPAs, utilizing different fruits. American Pale Ales are a second favorite here. Beer and food can be ordered on either side, as well as the beer garden in the back. Not in the mood for beer? Don’t worry, bourbon and cocktails are offered as well. No cans, but growlers to go are available!

7 N. Main Street, Pearl River, NY One of Pearl River’s two breweries, Gentle Giant has an intimate feel to it, allowing for a more personal experience. The Dinosaur-themed brewery usually has a small but very well-rounded beer list. Besides the beer of course, a must-have on their great BBQ menu is their Mac N’ Cheese. If you’re around for lunch, they have a pretty great lunch special at only $10. Drool. There are some classic video games, a cornhole set up outside the entrance and a bunch of board games. Test your Connect Four skills and double check your height against the dino-mural. The only downside of this sweet brewery is that you can’t take any beer home... just means you’ve gotta visit more! 18 / Rivertown Magazine July 2019

148 NY-59, Nanuet, NY Although Growler & Gill is not a brewery, it’s still one of our favorite beer spots that we just have to mention. Located on Rt 59 in Nanuet, this gastropub and craft beer shop has 24 rotating beers on tap, along with a wine list. You’ll always find something new to try, and cans and bottles from all over to bring home. Growlers are available, of course. They host weekly events, such as open mic on Tuesdays and trivia on Wednesdays. The Beer Garden is dog-friendly, so bring your furry friend. They also offer a loyalty program, so be sure to sign up and don’t forget to use it, like we sometimes do! The food is delicious, and we suggest getting the pretzels (we get ours all spicy).

55. W. Railroad Avenue, #25, Garnerville, NY Located in a pre-civil war industrial complex in Garnerville off of Rt. 202, this brewery takes into account the change of seasons. With each new season, their beer “landscape” changes to complement it with the correct beer. The food selection is limited to small cheese and meat plates, but you’re welcome to bring your own food. The best part about this brewery? The setting. After you’re done trying a few beers, take a walk around the expanding complex. And they’re super dog friendly! Be sure to bring a camera and bring home some cans of Wrench, their staple IPA.
Naptime Liquid Creation
300 Corporate Drive, #2, Blauvelt, NY Right off Rt. 303 in Blauvelt, this cozy brewery is the perfect hang out spot. There are a variety of different games to choose from inside and out, including darts and cornhole. Although the draft selection is smaller than the other Rockland breweries, there are plenty of cans to choose from. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, so don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask to sample a beer if you’re unsure. No food here, but there’s always delivery.

Amici Restaurant and Pizzeria is named after the Italian word for friends. It’s a fitting choice. With an amiable staff, an intimate atmosphere and a menu full of delicious comfort food, Amici always makes their customers feel welcome. While they are best known for their pizza, Amici’s also offers a vast menu of lunch and dinner options and seasonal specials dreamed up by the head chef. They serve delicious takes on classic Italian style meals like Chicken Française, Chicken Florentine, Eggplant Parmigiana and seasonally fried soft shell crab. They offer Angus steaks cooked tender and served with orzo, fresh seafood liked crispy grilled Branzino and a huge variety of pastas. Amici’s best seller, the eggplant parm is savory and delicious, prepared so tender that it melts in the mouth. The Chicken Française is zesty and refreshing, the lemon sauce lending the dish a light flavor that contrasts nicely with the breaded chicken cutlet. The fried soft shell crab, offered seasonally, is wonderfully crunchy, lightly battered and served with cocktail sauce. Amici’s cooks and serves crabs in their entirety, which results in a meaty dish that’s amazingly tasty.

Tucked away in the far corner of the Nyack Hub Shopping Center, Amici has been serving meals for more than 20 years and retains a dedicated customer base. It’s summer time and the drinking is easy, and no cocktail says summer like a margarita, typically made with tequila. But did you know that a margarita can also be spectacular if made with mezcal? Before we go any further, let me explain the differences between tequila and mezcal. Mezcal is any spirit that is produced from any of the 125 varieties of the agave plant. Each mezcal is produced in a small village, typically in a family-owned distillery dedicated exclusively to producing one brand. The agave plants, called magueys, are roasted in open fire pits, which tends to give mezcal a wonderfully smoky character.
Tequila is a type of mezcal, only made from the Weber Blue agave plant. Most tequilas in the United States are produced from magueys roasted in steel autoclaves, at one of five factory distilleries that do contract distilling in Mexico. Considering there are multiple varieties of agave plants used to make mezcal, and that each brand is made in a small family-owned distillery, I find mezcal to be a far more interesting and diverse spirit compared to tequila. You just have to appreciate a little smokiness in your drink. Whether you prefer mezcal or tequila, both can be used to make spectacular summer cocktails. Here are a few of my personal favorites
El Buho Mezcal Espadin
Owned by Nyack resident John Henry, El Buho is the quintessential mezcal. The Espadin agave are roasted in a stone pit fire for a week and crushed by horse on a tohona stone mill. It is double distilled in a 5th-generation copper still. Drip by drip, bottled by hand in rustic glass. There’s nothing like an El Buho with fresh grapefruit juice on the rocks with muddled jalapeño to make a summer day special. A truly spectacular mezcal.
Calle 23 Reposado
Created by tequila doyenne Sophie Decobecq, a pioneering woman in a male-dominated category, Calle 23 Reposado is double distilled in traditional pot stills, then rested in ex-Bourbon oak casks for eight months, to achieve a well-balanced tequila reflecting a subtle balance between Agave and wood spices, without losing its freshness. An incredible value tequila that should be in every bar.

Beautiful fresh vegetables are plentiful in July, lovely little cherry tomatoes and plenty of large luscious leafy greens are appearing at the Farmers Market. Bruschetta is a wonderful way to add greens to your diet. I like to top them lightly cooked on a bed of hummus, with a dusting of lemon zest and a drizzle of really good quality balsamic vinegar. Because I couldn’t decide whether I prefer leafy green or tomato bruschetta best, I’ve included recipes for both. The berry tart makes a beautiful summer treat for a special dinner but it’s easy enough to whip up on any day of the week. I have written directions for vegan ingredients, however the proportions will work for regular dairy ingredients if you prefer.
LEAFY GREEN AND TOMATO BRUSCHETTAS For the bread: • 1 whole wheat sourdough baguette or boule • 1 clove garlic For the leafy green bruschetta: • 1 bunch of your favorite leafy greens chopped– kale, spinach, chard, broccoli rabe, dandelion greens (or a combination is really lovely) • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic • Drizzle of really good balsamic or red wine vinegar • 2 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted • Juice and zest of a lemon • Fresh basil and parsley for topping • Really good quality store-bought hummus For the tomato bruschetta: • 1 packet cherry tomatoes, preferably tri-colored • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1–2 teaspoons minced red onion–or more to taste • Scattering of toasted pine nuts • Fresh parsley and basil for topping • Really good quality store-bought hummus
Method: Toast the bread. Cut one of the garlic cloves in half and rub the toast with the garlic. Toast the pine nuts by placing them in a dry pan over a medium heat. Watch them closely and shake the pan every so often so they brown evenly and don’t burn. When golden brown, remove them from the heat to cool. For the leafy greens, place a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan and add the minced garlic cloves. Saute for a couple of minutes then add the washed greens. Stir and cook until tender. Remove from heat and drizzle over a little REALLY good quality balsamic OR red wine vinegar. Spread some hummus over the toasted bread and top with the greens, squeeze over a little lemon juice, lemon zest, drizzle of olive oil, a few pine nuts and some freshly chopped parsley and basil. Spread some hummus onto the toast, top with the tomato mixture and sprinkle over some freshly chopped parsley and basil, a squeeze of lemon juice and a drizzle of good olive oil. Serve immediately.

FRUIT TART Pre-heat oven to 350°F For the pastry: • 1 1/2 cups spelt flour • Pinch of salt • 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) vegan butter (I use Earth Balance) cold and cut into cubes • 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) vegetable shortening, cold and cut into chunks • 3-4 tablespoons iced water For the filling: • 8 oz cream cheese—I use “Kite Hill” non-dairy • 1/3 cup sour cream—I use “Follow Your Heart” non-dairy and it’s quite thick (which is perfect for this filling) • 1/4 cup of organic confectioner’s sugar, sifted • 1 teaspoon organic vanilla extract • Zest of a lemon • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice For the topping: • Berries of your choice Method: Measure out the butter and shortening and place in bowl together. Make sure they’re really cold not room temperature.
Gently push the pie crust all around the dish, trimming off any excess and replacing any areas that need repair. Very gently poke holes but not all the way through the dough on the tart base. Place the pie plate on a baking sheet and bake in the pre-heated oven for about 20 minutes or until just golden. Remove from the oven an allow to cool thoroughly before adding the filling. To make the filling: Bring the cream cheese and sour cream to room temperature. Place all the ingredients in a medium bowl and mix together. I used a wooden spoon but go gently, don’t over beat it. You want the mixture to be smooth and creamy but not too runny. If it looks a little runny add more confectioner’s sugar, just make sure you sift it or the mixture will be lumpy. If it looks a little too thick, add a little more lemon juice. Taste and experiment until you’re happy. Pour the filling into the tart shell. If you’re not serving it immediately, chill in the fridge at this stage before you add the fruit to the top. Add the fruit just before serving and lightly dust with some sifted confectioner’s sugar if desired.
Place flour and salt in a food processor with the “S” blade. Pulse a few times to combine. Add the cold vegan butter and shortening. Pulse about 10–15 times until it resembles very coarse breadcrumbs. Add the iced water while the processor is running. If it looks dry add another tablespoon of water, but if it’s beginning to clump together, stop. Dump the dough onto a lightly floured surface and shape it into a ball. Don’t kneed the pastry, handle it as little as possible. Wrap with plastic wrap and place into the fridge for 30 minutes to “relax.” Remove the dough from the fridge and roll out to a circle. Wrap the dough gently around the rolling pin and then carefully transfer it to an 11 inch pie plate. RivertownMagazine.com / 31

he Hudson River serves as a postcard-worthy backdrop for refreshing summer cocktails and creative cuisine at Pier 701. Executive Chef and owner Denis Whitton, along with his wife and coowner Vicki, have been working to fulfill this vision since opening their doors in July 2013. After Hurricane Sandy, Denis completely renovated the restaurant, adding new decking and a tiki bar that draws standing room only crowds from Rockland, Westchester and Bergen Counties. The dynamic seating options range from high top tables to traditional dining tables, some beneath the sprawling awning or umbrellas, and some out in the open for the sun worshippers. Indoor diners are not excluded from the river views, thanks to Denis’ dining room redesign in which he “opened up” the existing wall with windows sprawling along the rear of the deck. One of the biggest summer highlights at the Pier is the Thursday night luau. For a third summer now, diners can relish in a lavish threehour spread along Pier 701’s waterfront white sand beach, lined with tiki torches and beach-themed tables. Starting at 6PM, guests kick off the evening with a onehour open bar as they stroll the beach, indulging in the unlimited

smorgasboard. Included is a raw bar, open fire pit paella, a traditional full roasted pig and a less traditional alligator prepared with a cajun dry rub. The buffet includes typical barbeque items such as short ribs and brisket, plus a taco bar and baked potato bar with every topping imaginable. Finally, the seafood bake consists of clams, mussels, crawfish, shrimp, crab, corn, potatoes and andouille sausage. Adding to the fun is a “best dressed” luau outfit contest, with the winner receiving a $25 gift card to the restaurant. The riverfront deck is still open for dinner service on luau evenings. On Pier 701’s regular menu, Denis enjoys experimenting with new dishes. Inspired by frequent visits to New Orleans, Denis has expanded his dinner menu to include N’awlins specialties such as crawfish, gumbo and po boys. RivertownMagazine.com / 33
Come fall, Denis has planned a cooking demo series where patrons can learn from his years of culinary experience. “I’m showing. I’m explaining. They ask questions, and they get the recipes. They also get to taste each course and enjoy a glass of wine.” Having grown up with Crohn’s disease, Denis is planning a health-conscious cooking series. His other series will focus on gourmet, French-style cooking, which Denis mastered on the job, under the tutelage of two Michelinstarred chefs and multiple French chefs. Pier 701 boasts two private dining rooms for all types of celebrations. Vicki manages these events as the Head of Events and Catering. In addition to formal events, every day of the week brings a new special: Monday Madness includes $7 Mojitos and $1 oysters, Taco Tuesday serves up $3 Tecates and $7 margaritas and Wednesdays offer 50 cent wings with $6–7 glasses of wine. O
n Sunday, June 2, the Village of Haverstraw opened up its streets to almost 2,000 visitors for its 6th annual Food Crawl, sponsored by Rockland County Tourism. Organized by the non-profit arts organization Haverstraw Riverwide Arts, the Haverstraw Food Crawl was created to challenge the perception that downtown Haverstraw lacked a successful restaurant row. The organization set out to prove that not only does Haverstraw hosts incredible restaurants, but it is a warm and vibrant business district where all are welcome.
This year, 16 restaurants opened their doors to Crawlgoers, offering delectable dishes ranging from $3-$6. West Street served as home to a lively Craft Beverage Garden, with five local New York breweries serving beers and ciders. Fat Boi’s Brass Band entertained the crowd all afternoon, while attendees noshed on delicious southern dishes such as pulled pork and brisket chili from Big Daddy’s Home Plate BBQ.

Food Crawl organizers extended their gratitude to the Village of Haverstraw DPW who helped to set up and disassemble the beer garden. Many patrons contributed to this successful day for the Haverstraw Riverwide Arts Committee and the Haverstraw community.

Bodega Santa Julia We often remark that one of the biggest perks of the wine business is the connection we make with the individuals responsible for producing the wine we sell. Many times at trade tastings we attend, there are winery representatives pouring the samples, and at times the owners and/or winemakers are in attendance. However, trade tastings are very often enormous, hectic affairs and at best you get a quick “meet and greet.” The best perk is a more intimate version, when a dinner or luncheon invitation is extended. Such was our good fortune recently when we attended a luncheon hosted by Julia Zuccardi for whom Bodega Santa Julia is named. Her grandfather, Alberto Zuccardi, started his winery Familia Zuccardi in Mendoza, Argentina in the 1960’s. From the very beginning, his focus was on sustainable farming, respecting the earth and the environment. Alberto was a passionate visionary, always searching for ways to improve efficiency in the winery yet retaining the individuality of his wines. An engineer by profession, he designed an irrigation system to assist the vines in the arid Argentine climate. Julia Zuccardi is third generation so you might say wine is in her blood! From a very early age, it was apparent that Julia would be a part of the Zuccardi winery. Her role has evolved to incorporate her University degrees in English with her responsibilities managing the tourism division for Familia Zuccardi. As she says, her job is “to make people drink wine.” We are happy to report she is very good at her job!

Our luncheon was held at The Farmhouse Tavern in Katonah on a beautiful spring day. For two hours we ate fabulous food paired with Santa Julia wines. We started with a refreshing rosé sparkler and proceeded to taste through Chardonnay, Cabernet, Malbec, a Malbec Cabernet Franc Reserva blend and Torrontes. Apparently, at the previous night’s wine dinner, the “Julia Spritz” was born. This a delightful mix of Torrontes, bitters, a splash of grapefruit juice topped off with club soda and a piece of grapefruit. It’s the perfect remedy for summer heat! Julia’s passion for these wines was evident, but there was also the pride she takes in the family’s philosophy of respect and fairness. The Santa Julia vineyards are certified organic, and there is great effort to ensure ecologically sensitive practices are utilized throughout the winery. he beautifully renovated Bath & Body Works shop, located on the third floor of the Palisades Center in West Nyack, NY, opened its doors on Friday, May 24 with much excitement. County representatives, retail/business colleagues and guests were invited to join Bath & Body Works District Manager Ellen Ellefsen, Store Manager Toby Gunn and Sales Supervisor Janette Fenner at the ribbon cutting that day to commemorate the event. The retailer had been temporarily relocated during construction and redesign. The new store is triple the size of the original store, showcasing a chic, new Bath & Body Works concept. Additionally, the remodel of the store included expansion of the White Barn collection. The White Barn Candle Company is a popular home fragrance designer with a range of signature scents and products to choose from, including wallflowers, candles, hand soap and more. The main showcase at the new and improved Bath & Body Works is the fresh, new Gingham collection. The Gingham collection features the iconic checkered design in navy and white. The fragrance is “a fresh blend of bright florals and a hint of sweet citrus.” The extensive line includes products such as shower gel, body wash, hand & body lotions & creams, mists, perfumes and candles. Sister Ursula Joyce is seeing the culmination of a dream come true. In 1979, the Dominican Sisters closed St. Agnes Home and School for Boys in Sparkill, a work they had begun in 1884. They then faced the challenge of finding a new use for the property consistent with their mission of service. The need for affordable senior housing in Rockland County emerged as a priority and a yearslong journey began to make the dream a reality. Sister Ursula coordinated the Sisters’ efforts to secure funding and obtain the necessary zone changes and all the other Town and County approvals needed. Their success can be seen in the two affordable senior living communities that are now part of the Sisters’ Sparkill campus: Thorpe Village, a 200-unit apartment complex on Route 340 and Dowling Gardens, a 111-unit apartment complex on Kings Highway in Sparkill. Dowling Gardens was designed to create a fully accessible housing community with services and amenities that supported the efforts of frail, but otherwise healthy elders, to maintain their independence to the extent possible in a non-medical setting. They enjoy a one bedroom apartment equipped with an emergency call system, a daily dinner with choice of menu served in a 60 / Rivertown Magazine July 2019
formal dining room managed by a Culinary Institute of America graduate Dan Semenza, a coffee shop, large print library, hair salon, scheduled transportation to shopping, landscaped grounds, friendly neighbors who watch out for one another and an experienced and compassionate staff. At Dowling Gardens, the importance of socialization and involvement in meaningful activities has always been recognized. The programs offered can best be summarized as “Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! Your Mind, Your Body, Your Spirit.” Visit on any given day and you will find residents caught up in a “News and Views” discussion or in a circle knitting and chatting. Maybe there’s a classical music concert in the Sun Room or a musician playing New Orleans jazz. My grandmother moved there after my grandfather passed away and she often commented on the kindness of the
nuns and staff there. The food was always very good. I’ve been back there recently for a beautiful Veteran’s Day ceremony, and it was really thoughtfully done and decorated. This is a really special place and run by people who genuinely care about everyone who lives there. It is a blessing to have such lovely people caring for such special souls.”

It’s the gorgeous Bricktown Inn, built in the 18th century by one of Haverstraw’s brick millionaires. Owners Michelle and Joe Natale have turned this historic home into a world class B&B.
My 95-year-old mother-in-law Dolores, who thinks I live a much more exciting life than I really do, is always asking me: where are you going on your next vacation? To make myself sound interesting, I’ll say the Casbah, China or Paris. Dolores’ eyes would light up. “I’d love to stroll down the Champs Elysee in my big chapeau.” So she was understandably surprised when I told her our next trip was to Haverstraw. “Duh” was all she could manage to say. But you already live there. I explained that we were selling our home in Haverstraw and were planning to move into a temporary place until the closing. I knew of a fabulous bed & breakfast inn—one of Rockland County’s bestkept secrets.

Is the property accessible to you? Make sure that your real estate investments are within driving distance to your personal home. There are times when you, the owner, will have to be available and easily accessible to the property. I like the 90-minute rule. All properties must be within a 90-minute drive. 4. Ensure that you familiarize yourself with the local city and/or municipality. The city and/or municipality services, the building department, zoning board, public works system, etc. Also, just as important, you must fully comprehend the local court system as it applies to real estate. Summer Tax Savings Opportunities Summertime offers unique tax saving situations. The weather is warm, kids are out of school and it’s time to think about tax saving opportunities! Here are five ways you can enjoy your normal summertime activities and save on taxes: 1. Rent out your property tax-free. If you have a cabin, condo or similar property, consider renting it out for two weeks. The rental income you receive on property rented for less than 15 days per year is not considered taxable income. In addition, you can still deduct your mortgage interest expense and property taxes in full as itemized deductions! Track the rental days closely—going over 14 days means all rent is taxable and rental income rules apply. 2. Take a tax credit for summer childcare. For working parents, the summer comes with the added challenge of finding care for their children. Thankfully, the Child and Dependent Care Credit can cover 20-35 percent of qualified childcare expenses for your children under the age of 13. Eligible types of care include day care, nanny fees, and day camps (overnight camps and summer school do not qualify).

3. Hire your kids. If you own a business, hire your kids. If you are a sole proprietor and your child is under age 18, you can pay them to work without withholding or paying Social Security and Medicare tax. 4. Have a garage sale. In general, the money you make from a yard or garage sale is tax-free because you sell your goods for less than you originally paid for them. Once the sale is over, donate the remaining items to a qualified charity to get a potential charitable donation deduction. Just remember to keep a log of the items you donate and ask for a receipt. 5. Start a Roth IRA for your children. Roth IRA contributions are limited to the amount of income your child earns, so earned income is key. This can include income from mowing lawns or selling lemonade. Start making contributions as soon as your child makes some money to take advantage of the tax-free earnings available in a Roth IRA. Taking the time this summer to execute these tips can put extra money in your pocket right away and provide you tax-saving happiness in the future. Step Right Up! Come one, Come all to The Greatest Little Circus this side of the Hudson! For two weeks only, Amazing Grace Circus will present its 16th annual camp season titled “Mr. Amazing’s Under the Big Top Summer Camp” from August 19– September 2, 2019, on the beautiful property of Marydell Faith and Life Center in Upper Nyack, NY. Registered campers from the ages of 5–14 will learn to defy gravity and soar to success taught by professional circus arts educators that hail from Big Apple Circus, Cirque Le Masque, Circus Moves and many others. All this will happen under a beautiful new Italian circus tent that Mr. Amazing and his wife, Hilary Sweeney, bought just last year (hint: if you attended the PRIDE Rockland Gala last October, you experienced the magic of the tent first-hand). 84 / Rivertown Magazine July 2019
The last time Mr. Amazing brought a circus tent to Nyack was 2009 for the Hudson River Quadricentennial Celebration. That time, he walked an elephant down Main Street. This time: no elephants, only relevance. What a great time to send your kids to camp: the last two weeks of August! Just when you needed it most, the circus can take care of your kids while you prepare for the school year. All other camps have already closed… but not the Circus! At the end of each one-week session, campers will put on a ‘Showcase of Talents’ for their parents and friends with costumes, make-up and choreography. On the weekends, and through Labor Day, Amazing Grace Circus will perform two shows a day, at 1pm and 4pm. Get your tickets early. The tent seats 299 souls.

n the early sixties, pride might have meant a family, dressed up to go out for Sunday dinner. But the gay teen-aged son, sitting in the back seat, wished he were someplace else as he sat quiet as a mouse in a closet. His paintings and poems were as hidden as his pain from secretly loving his best friend Tom, longing to be with him, wishing Tom could share the portrait he had sketched of him. In Rockland County, 2019 times have changed. The pristine walls of the Rockland Center for the Arts donated two galleries for their PRIDE 2019 art exhibit held on May 19, which they have done for the last 15 years. Many partners and allies of Rockland LGBTQ PRIDE have donated funds, space, professional and legal advice and counseling to grow a safe haven and a new home for LGBTQ individuals. Fund raisers such as the past and present year’s art shows have made this possible. The artists gladly accepted 40 percent of the sales to help the organization gain success, gifting the LGBTQ population with the ability to be oneself, no matter how they dress, whom they love or what they paint.

Phyllis shared these words at the art exhibit: “In 1999 we developed PRIDE awareness in Rockland County. Three years ago, VCS recognized the need for a non-profit, freestanding building in Nyack because LGBTQ people could not get into the PRIDE celebrations in NYC.” The idea for a fund-raising art show came when Phyllis and Hal Parker attended a gallery reception. “Why can’t we do this?” they said and the art show and Board of Directors were born. The gallery walls of the Rockland Center for the Arts, hung with over 100 striking works of art, in acrylic, oils, mixed media, watercolor, ink, jewelry, photography and sculpture display the artist’s passion to be “out there,” with PRIDE and without reprisals or fear. “I felt joy to be among the creativity and diversity of the artists,” said Marilyn Benkler, founder of the “Art For All” studios in New City. “It was an honor to find a piece to purchase to help PRIDE and its mission.” All the artists shouted out who they were through their artwork. Nancy Bowen’s mixed media, brightly-colored abstracts are a reminder of the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Nancy sums up her process: “I’m a spontaneous painter. I see and feel images. I believe in Rockland PRIDE, and their aims to help the LGBTQ community. I’m glad to be part of this art show.”

Westrock pools is something of a Rockland County institution. Founded in 1967 by Robert Ball, Westrock was one of the first businesses built along Route 59 and was among the first pool stores to open in Rockland. For more than 50 years, Westrock has built and serviced pools all across the tri-state area, helping people from Rockland, Orange, Westchester, Bergen County and even New York City stay cool during the summer. Originally a series of large retail outlets, Westrock has consolidated its business into a thriving warehouse, stocked with over a million dollars’ worth of inventory. Their pool building service is enormously popular and responsible for many, perhaps the majority, of the county’s pools and hot tubs. Unlike its competitors, Westrock is open seven days a week all year round. The staff spends the colder months training in pool chemical use, breaking ground on next summer’s pools and helping customers who are still using their hot tubs. Westrock has highly trained support staff dedicated to maintaining its client’s pools; 90 / Rivertown Magazine July 2019
customers can pay to have them opened, closed and routinely cleaned during the season. Westrock’s owner, Andrew Bari, makes it a point of pride to retain his employees during the off season because “you can’t create quality staff laying people off every October.” Andrew himself has been working with Robert since he was 14 years old. A few years later, Andrew’s father became partners with Robert. Then after he graduated college, Andrew took over his father’s share of the business and continues to be co-partners with Robert. Westrock has something to offer customers at every price point. It carries custom above and in ground pools, but it is best known for stunning custom constructions. Movie stars have hired Westrock to create pools, and customers can order top-of-the-line products like heaters that can be remotely activated via smartphone. It offers pools built with steel frames, pools with vinyl liners and pools made of Gunite, a more resilient type
of concrete. The warehouse also holds an impressive variety of hot tubs in a wide range of sizes and prices. “Everyone should own a hot tub,” advises Andrew. “At least anyone who has stress in their life or any form of aches and pains.” Andrew and Robert are proud to be a part of the Rockland community and regularly donate Westrock’s time and money to a number of causes. They’ve gifted a large sum of money to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Helen Hayes Foundation and many other local charities. Westrock offers a hero’s discount on all pool supplies in the store to first responders including police officers, firemen, nurses and paramedics. This year Andrew has focused on donating to Jawonio, a nonprofit organization that provides “lifespan services in the Hudson Valley of New York State for individuals with developmental disabilities.” He has already raised more than $10,000 so far. The owners are happy to give back to their community. “Rockland has been good to us,” according to Andrew and Robert. Westrock is the only destination for anyone in the tristate area looking to buy, maintain or fix a pool or hot tub. Carmine Caponigro founded RAMAPO ORAL & MAXILLO-FACIAL SURGERY in Suffern, New York 50 years ago. “I opened the doors in Suffern on July 14, 1969 and received $15 for my first procedure!” Dr. Carmine feels building his practice in Rockland County after leaving the Grand Concourse in the Bronx was the best career decision he could have made. They feel comfortable here, and we see them grow emotionally and acquire social graces. They are wonderful kids and have always been a part of our work force,” said William.
“We also hire people from BOCES, Jawonio and those who use American Sign Language. We have jobs in laundry services, bus boys, kitchen aides, bell hops and other services. We always look for the right fit so they feel comfortable. Sometimes they start out in one area, but we find they excel in another area. We have good people at our front desk and in housekeeping. Different people bring different skills, even those with disabilities,” said Maria Marcolini, Director of Human Resources. Voted seven years in a row for having the best service, the Pearl River Hilton must be doing something right. “Some of my employees have been with us 10 to 30 years,” said Maloney. “We get lots of return people, especially business people coming to our hotel. We also get visitors who want to get out of the city and explore the Hudson Valley.

Divorce is arguably one of the most stressful events a family can experience. Courtroom litigation can be a lengthy and draining process, both emotionally and financially. An alternative for willing couples is mediation, in which a neutral mediator works with both parties to settle terms of the divorce in areas such as custody, child & spousal support, parenting plans and division of assets. With the contentious nature of these issues, it takes a highly skilled, unbiased mediator to creatively develop possible resolutions. Enter Janice Starr. Janice has been practicing successful mediation for over 20 years. Her background as a therapist, as much as her legal knowledge as an attorney, is the secret behind her popular business. Janice began her career by earning a Master’s degree in guidance and counseling and with years of experience as a youth and family counselor already on her resume, Janice made a career-shifting decision to attend law school. I think that is what distinguishes us from other approaches to ending a marriage. Here we can customize a creative solution.” Janice truly believes that couples can find a way to reach an agreement if they put in the time/work. One of Janice’s hopes when a couple comes to mediation is that they are able to negotiate in a manner that will serve as a model for their children on how to amicably resolve a dispute. Gary Larsen was a people person. In 2002, when he was suffering from leukemia and told he had only a few months left to him, Gary had only one request for his loved ones. He wanted to see as many of them as possible before his time came. In his final days, Gary’s friends and family traveled from all over the country to say goodbye, and he happily welcomed all of them even as his condition steadily declined. He valued their company more than anything. A few months later, at an impromptu memorial for their beloved friend, the McArdle family came up with the perfect way to honor that sentiment. The Gary Larsen Foundation perfectly embodies the spirit of its namesake. Founded by Tom McArdle a year after his friend’s passing, the organization is dedicated to helping children suffering from leukemia. So far it has raised more than $200,000 to support children afflicted with cancer. The money has helped in a lot of ways. The foundation donated 102 / Rivertown Magazine July 2019

proceeds to Happiness Is Camping, a “camp for kids with cancer,” where sick children are able to spend some time away from doctors and hospital rooms. They’ve given money to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House, enough to fund a brand new play room. In recent years, the foundation has focused on supporting the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, “the world’s largest voluntary (nonprofit) health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research.” They specifically donate to the charity’s New Jersey branch, which helped to treat Gary. Most of that money is raised during a single event, a massive Bocce Ball tournament that has become a Piermont community tradition. Once a year for nearly two decades, Gary’s friends and their families have returned to the Hudson Valley to raise money for leukemia relief and enjoy each other’s company. The tournament is a formality. Though they seem a competitive bunch (there is an engraved trophy
cup offered up to each year’s champion), they’re chiefly concerned with having fun and helping the cause. Bocce was chosen specifically because of how accessible the game is to even the most amateur athletes. What matters is that everyone plays together. The tournament has become an important part of the community. Guest speakers have included the town mayor, the chief of police and Tom Conklin, the president of the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Make-AWish Foundation.

s part of the celebration of the recent opening of the Camp Shanks Legacy Exhibit, The Manse Barn in Tappan packed the house on Saturday night, May 18 to enjoy the music of The Reflections Jazz & Swing Orchestra featuring Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Woody Herman. Dubbed “Last Stop USA,” Camp Shanks housed 50,000 troops on over 2,000 acres of land as their last place of residence before leaving US soil. with the Orangeburg, Tappan, Blauvelt and Palisades Libraries did the fundraising for the Big Band Extravaganza. The Reflections Jazz & Swing Orchestra appeared before 170 people at the historic site to reprise the big band tradition made famous by Jimmy Dorsey, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Woody Herman. Refreshments were served and donations accepted. Pastor Donald Hoover of The Tappan Reformed Church which is
celebrating its 325th Anniversary generously donated the use of the Manse Barn located at 32 Old Tappan Road for the occasion. Admission was free to the community. The Shanks Legacy exhibit is located at the Orangetown Historical Museum & Archives at the DePew House, 196 Chief Bill Harris Way in Orangeburg. Exhibition hours are Tuesdays and Fridays 10AM to 2PM and Sundays 1PM to 4PM.

Question: How do I know if my house is being priced properly? Answer: Proper pricing is essential in real estate. It’s important to challenge your Realtor as to how he/she came up with the list price they recommend to you. If a Realtor asks what price you want him/her to list your house for… RUN! A big part of any Realtor’s job is to choose the correct recent comparable sales in your area, adjust these sales to your home, show you what makes sense as a list price and what you can expect as a sale price. Pricing too high is dangerous because buyer’s agents educate their clients on home values and any mortgage requires a bank appraisal with a value at or above the agreed-upon sale price. Pricing too low usually has the obvious consequence of netting you less than you deserve on your sale.

WHAT CONSTITUTES HARASSMENT AND A HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT? Over the past several years, the phrases “workplace harassment” and “hostile work environment” have been given significant attention in the media. As a result, these phrases have made their way into the vernacular and have, unfortunately, become misunderstood. The fact is that the dictionary definitions of “harassment” and “hostility” are not the same as their legal definitions. Laws protecting employees from creation of a hostile work environment and/or workplace harassment are based on state and federal civil rights legislation. Therefore, a valid claim under these theories can arise only when the offending conduct by the employer is motivated out of discrimination against the employee based on protected legal categories such as race, ethnicity, gender and religion. A boss who singles a worker out for mistreatment based solely on personality conflicts is not guilty of discrimination in the legal sense. If the motive behind the supervisor’s conduct is not discriminatory in the legal sense (i.e. based on the employee’s gender, race, age or other protected status), there is no claim for harassment or creation of a hostile work environment. Thus, while many workers may legitimately feel a sense of hostility surrounding them in their work environment, that hostility often does not meet the very specific criteria required in order to
establish legal harassment or hostility. Furthermore, even if the behavior of the employer is found to be based on the employee’s protected status, the employee can only prevail if there is sufficient harm caused so as to interfere with “terms and conditions of employment.” Of course, terminating or refusing to hire an employee based on protected class status is de facto harm. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that whether an employee has a claim against an employer for making the workplace uncomfortable depends on “the frequency of the discriminatory conduct; its severity; whether it is physically threatening or humiliating... and whether it unreasonably interferes with an employee’s work performance.” Harris v. Forklift Sys., 510 U.S. 17, 23 (1993). Minor or infrequent conduct will not suffice. The analysis of workplace discrimination is nuanced. However, it is safe to say that the Webster’s Dictionary definitions of harassment and hostility do not always translate to actionable legal claims. Both employers and employees are well served to understand these distinctions in order to avoid wasting resources on unsupported claims. I will let you in on a secret. In show business one of the biggest differences between great acts and superstars is their stories. Not just life stories but the stories that are built into everything they do. A clear example of this is seen when you compare the DC and Marvel comic empires. DC has, by far, the best superheroes; Superman, Batman & Robin, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and so many others. But Marvel tells much better stories, and now that they are owned by Disney, who are arguably the best storytellers of all time, they have become an unstoppable multi-billiondollar industry. Of course, a key part of the story is that it must be relatable to your target audience. A story about cannibals told to an audience of vegetarians is probably a bad idea. This month’s magic trick incorporates one of the stories that has kept me out of the big time. Enjoy. It starts with a riddle: What weighs more: 100 pounds of feathers, 100 pounds of dog poop, or a 100 pounds of gold? The answer is: they all weigh the same. 100 pounds of anything still weighs 100 pounds. You would be surprised how many people get this simple question wrong. Today we are going to use this riddle and combine it with a physical oddity to create a fun magic trick which I named: Heavy Digits.

HOW TO PERFORM HEAVY DIGITS What your friends think they see:
What really happens:
You make it impossible for them to lift their finger by apparently putting imaginary weights on it.
It is a little-known human oddity that if you place your hand palm down on a table and curl your middle finger in, it becomes almost impossible for the person to lift their ring finger. Take a look at the photograph and try it.
Have one of your friends place their hand palm down on the table and curl in their middle finger. You then pretend to place the imaginary 100 pounds of gold on their pinkie, 100 pounds of poop on their index finger and 100 pounds of feathers on their thumb.
What really happens: This is a physical limitation that affects almost everyone. If you place your hand palm down on a flat surface and bend your middle finger in, you will be able to lift every finger except the ring finger. To ensure that works, you should have your friend use their weaker hand (usually left) and make sure the hand is as flat as possible and the middle finger is bent as far as possible. As seen in the photograph.
You bring up the riddle by asking them which they think is heavier. The answer will get a chuckle or a laugh. You then ask them to try and lift their thumb with all the imaginary feathers on it, and they will easily lift it and return it to position. Ask them to lift the index finger with the poop and they will, and finally the pinkie with the gold. As a finale, you explain that anyone can lift an imaginary 100 pounds with their finger. But lifting 300 pounds is almost impossible. You then pretend to move the 100 pounds of feathers, poop and gold to their ring finger. Ask them to lift up the ring finger, and it will be almost impossible.
How to perform Heavy Digits: The method and presentation for Heavy Digits has been pretty much explained already. All you have to do is practice and have fun. Although some people are amazed when you perform this for them, most of your friends will likely just laugh it off as a cute stunt.

WHERE TO WATCH FIREWORKS AROUND THE HUDSON VALLEY Independence Day is just around the corner and the Hudson Valley is preparing to celebrate with a bang. Mark your calendar for the following firework displays and celebrate independence the American way. JULY 2 Scarsdale has its annual firework display, starting at 7:30PM at the Scarsdale Pool Complex. The Westchester Band perfoms at 7:30PM; fireworks start at 9:15PM. A $5 fee will be charged to all non-pool members entering the pool starting at 5PM. Nanuet High School kicks off festivities at 5PM. At 8PM, the party band FDR Drive is putting on a free show and the fireworks begin at dusk. (Rain date July 3rd) JULY 3 Yonkers Cross County Shopping Center is putting on a festive fireworks show and concert with the NYC Party Band. The concert takes place on The Green lawn, in the center of the mall from 6:30-9PM. Fireworks will follow immediately after. (Rain Date July 5th.) JULY 4 Pearl River’s annual display is at the E. Central Avenue ball field. A free concert starts around 7PM and the fireworks will go off “just after dark.” Peekskill will be hosting a concert along its scenic waterfront from 7–9PM with fireworks to follow. Tarrytown is putting on a show at Pierson Park. The local rock band “Kick Start Charlie” will perform from 7-9PM, just in time for a fireworks display. The Rockland County Boulders are putting on a show after they take on the Trios Rivieres Aigles at 6:30PM at the Palisades Credit Union Park. Admission to the game is $49 dollars. JULY 5 Nyack will put on a firework display in Memorial Park at 9PM; their show was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Haverstraw’s Bowline Park will have a fireworks show that starts at 9:30PM. JULY 6 West Point is wrapping up the festivities with a concert and firework show on Saturday. The Army’s oldest band is set to play starting at 7:30PM at the Trophy Point Amphitheater. This performance concludes with a spectacular fireworks display over the Hudson River.
