THE BEST LOCAL COFFEE Meet You At Dean’s Coffee Company STORY BY TOM RILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH 12 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

Coffee is the favored drink of the civilized world

—Thomas Jefferson

C

offee is one of the most loved drinks in the world, and Dean’s Coffee Company in the heart of Pearl River has a love affair with it. Owners and coffee-lovers Salmira and Sammy Cecunjanin were always in search for the best cup of coffee in the area, but were never satisfied until they opened Dean’s Coffee Company in 2018. Within a few short months, Dean’s Coffee Company has become the neighborhood hangout for fresh, locally grown coffee delivered weekly from lrving Farms.

A friendly face at Dean’s: Ziad, the son of owners Sammy and Salmira Cecunjanin

The cozy neighborhood coffee shop is warm and inviting, with light and dark woods providing a European café atmosphere. Besides the fresh, local coffee, regulars at Dean’s Coffee Company rave about the thick and frothy Turkish coffee, cappuccino, traditional espresso, and teas from Harney & Sons.

RivertownMagazine.com / 13

One customer, Annabeth Chase, said, “It’s so rustic and enchanting. I love it here. I try to come here as often as possible, and each time I enter the cozy coffeehouse, I am welcomed with the sweet fragrance of coffee and hot chocolate. The owners/workers are so incredibly polite and friendly! I stayed there for almost two hours working on my laptop with a cup of hot chocolate and a chocolate croissant. Pearl River needed a coffeehouse just like the ones in the movies! Keep up the great work, Dean’s Coffee Company.” Dean’s Coffee Company has become a familiar destination for many to sit back and relax with a cup of Joe, and savor one of the shop’s delightful desserts. On the weekends, you can enjoy peanut-free donuts made fresh from D’Ercole’s Donuts in Northvale, New Jersey. Coming soon: fresh homemade crepes. “Just like in the show, ‘Cheers,’ I wanted to open a place where everybody knows your name,” said Samira, who is a longtime Orangetown resident. “People of all ages are welcome at Dean’s.”

14 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

About Dean’s Coffee, Haydee says, “My husband and I just left Dean’s Coffee place, and let me tell you... It is AMAZING!!! The place is super clean, and the coffee is fantastic. The pastries are very fresh and delicious. This might be our new go to! Definitely a place I recommend to everyone.” The locals are making a beeline to Dean’s Coffee Company at 39 East Central Avenue in Pearl River. Be sure to stop in and see what the buzz is about. Dean’s Coffee Company is open 7 days a week. E

UP LOUNGE AND RESTAURANT ON THE UP AND UP STORY BY JOSEPH KUHN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Rachel Karwaski is no stranger to the hospitality business. The owner and operator of Nyack’s hottest new restaurant, UP Lounge and Restaurant, Rachel has spent 12 years managing restaurants and countless hours bar backing, waiting tables, and doing “pretty much everything” that’s required to run a place. Now, after over a decade of saving money and operating other people’s restaurants, Rachel is finally ready to do things “her way.” According to Rachel, UP Lounge has been her “dream forever,” and the young restaurateur is ecstatic to finally make it a reality and to share her passion with the community. At three stories tall, UP Lounge is unlike any other venue on Nyack’s main street. The space feels gigantic and is laid out almost like an opera house; the second floor’s center stage nearly overhangs the first floor’s bar and seating areas so that every patron has great 16 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

seats to that night’s act. A huge wrought iron staircase, a majestic mahogany bar, and enormous chandeliers dangling from a vaulted ceiling lend the space to what Rachel considers “a Great Gatsby vibe.” The second and third floors have balconies that overlook Main Street and are used mainly for parties and overflow. Rachel spent months renovating the space and that hard work has paid off. “I spent 60 hours changing old chandelier bulbs to LED bulbs,” she said while proudly gesturing to one of the beautiful ornaments. The building’s acoustics are fantastic, making it an ideal location to regularly host local performers but also offering something different from other clubs. Instead of DJs blasting house music, UP Lounge’s patrons are treated to performances by live musicians like the Ahlfabet Swing Group. Rachel has made it her mission to recruit a diverse set of local bands to play for her

customers; visitors can expect classic rock groups, solo acoustic acts, or even a jazz band to perform while they enjoy dinner on a Friday or Saturday night. The food is equally varied. Head chef Ronald Campanaro has created a tapas style menu that features dishes crafted from fresh locally sourced ingredients as well as wine from local wineries. The number one seller is Campanaro’s award-winning crab cake. He also serves stuffed clams, fresh scallops, and mouthwatering sous-vide duck. UP Lounge also offers a special brunch menu on Sundays and a variety of unique cocktails. Their small plates are perfect for splitting, though you might not feel like sharing; Ronald is a veteran of the industry, and UP Lounge offers some of the best food on Main Street. In keeping with UP Lounge’s commitment to be environmentally friendly, the bar’s selection of local craft beers is only available on tap. Their candleholders are made from repurposed wine bottles, and their napkins, straws and take out containers are biodegradable. Even their menu is digital. Rachel and her staff are all happy to be part of the Nyack community and proud to work with local vendors and talent. They aim to make UP Lounge and Restaurant a more relaxed alternative to NYC clubs, and they’re well on their way. E

ALCACHOFAS A LA PARILLA (GRILLED ARTICHOKES) Ingredients Needed: Artichokes / Course Black Pepper / Course Salt or Sea Salt / Paprika Olive Oil / Chopped Fresh Garlic / White Wine / Lemons Quick Tips: Place a mixture of olive oil and salt in a spray bottle. While grilling, keep spraying an even coat over the artichokes. Make sure you do this to both sides. A great dipping sauce for grilled artichokes is garlic aioli or remoulade sauce. Buen Provecho.

Steps to Prepare 1. Wash artichokes under cold water. Skim off or cut any thorny leaf tips and cut off the stem area. 2. Cut artichokes in half and remove the center fuzz choke area. Keep lemon halves handy and squeeze lemon juice over your cut artichokes—this will prevent oxidation. 3. Bring a pot of water to a boil, add salt, lemon juice and the squeezed lemon skins. Once your water is boiling, add your artichokes and let them boil for 20-30 minutes. If your artichokes are larger, 30 minutes should do. 4. After boiling, remove artichokes and place in a large bowl. 5. Marinate the artichokes by adding salt, black pepper, a few sprinkles of paprika, white wine, chopped garlic, a few lemon juice squeezes and lots of olive oil (this is key). Stir everything together well—make sure the marinate coats the artichokes, especially the inner open area. 6. In a deep baking pan place your artichokes and marinate all together. Cover the pan and place in oven at about 350° for 20 minutes. 7. After your artichokes are removed from the oven you have two options—place them in your refrigerator covered for later use or grill them immediately. 8. Bring your grill to medium heat and place your artichokes open side up first. After a minute or two place open side down. One thing I like to do is keep basting them with olive oil while grilling and sprinkle more salt over them at the same time. As I said earlier, olive oil is the key here. After you see a nice char to the artichokes you should be all set to serve and eat. Enjoy.

A Just Desserts

Parisian treats with chef Alain Eigenmann of Alain’s Petit Bistro

“ile Flottante” (aka Floating Island)

STEP 1 For the crème anglaise: whisk egg yolks, sugar and milk. Cook over low, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon, about 10 minutes (do not boil). Remove pan from heat, and pour through a wire-mesh strainer into a medium metal bowl. Place the bowl inside a larger bowl of ice to help cool the mixture down. Stir occasionally until mixture is cool, about 30 minutes; cover and chill until ready to use.

Ingredients Meringue 6 egg whites 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar Pinch of salt

Orange Dentelle Cookie (optional) 2 oz orange juice 2 oz melted butter 2 oz flour 4 oz sugar

STEP 2 For the meringue: beat egg whites with an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment on medium-high speed in a large metal bowl until foamy. Add cream of tartar and a pinch of salt, beat until combined. Add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, and beat on medium-high speed. Continue beating until egg whites are shiny and form stiff peaks. Spoon meringue into 8 cloud-shaped mounds.

STEP 3 Heat meringue in microwave for 30 seconds. If you wish to serve meringue on an orange dentelle (as pictured), whisk orange juice, melted butter, flour and sugar and place mixture on baking sheet. Bake for 4 to 5 minutes at 400°.

STEP 4 Assemble: divide the crème anglaise among 8 individual shallow bowls or dessert plates. Place 1 meringue cloud in each bowl or inside the orange dentelle. Garnish with fresh berries, if desired. E 26 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

Sneak Peek:

TWO VILLAINS, ONE BREWERY STORY BY BOOZY HOPS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY TWO VILLAINS BREWING

T

here’s nothing better than a cold beer to unwind, unless you get to share it with the brewmasters of the new brewery opening up very soon at 132 Main Street in Nyack.

We had the opportunity to meet with both halves of Two Villains Brewing, Jonathan Fernandez and Sean Stampfl, who have known each other, worked and lived together for about 15 years. The journey started with years of home brewing; many of their creations merited awards of various competitions they entered. So much so, they were asked to judge instead of continuing to compete. With their vast knowledge and enthusiasm for the craft, they have ventured off into the many realms of the culture. Their most recent gig together has been as brewers at Brix City Brewing located in Little Ferry, NJ. Two Villains Brewing will be a realization of the years spent mastering their craft (beer). Originally looking for an upstate location, fate brought them and a few others together to Nyack, in the old Bourbon Street location on Main Street. What better place to have a brewery? The duo has plans to offer a plethora of beers, as well as a delicious menu. They will have the classic American pub food with a twist, in addition to a modern take on southern fare. Yes, there will be fries (Sara’s question, of course). They even have glassware pretty much decided—how exciting! Down to the final stretch, the tentative opening is set to be around October 2019 with small distribution happening before the official opening. Crowlers (32 ounce cans) will be available for purchase with some of their beers getting special releases. 30 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

On tap, there will be seven barrels and eight draft lines, starting with a milk stout, cream ale, pale ale, double IPA, and a saison. We’re most excited for the experimental casks, especially talk of a Thai chili saison (now they have to make it). There will be a perfect beer for everyone, no matter how adventurous you are.

Two Villains plans to have seven barrels and eight draft lines on tap.

The space will have a pop-art comic book vibe. Two Villains will also have multiple TVs for sports and other televised events to create a comfortable, welcoming, and fun space for the community of Nyack and its visitors. As excited as they are to make Two Villains a

Coming soon: Nyack’s first brewery at 132 Main Street.

welcoming place in Nyack, Jonathan and Sean are just as excited and looking forward to becoming a part of the Nyack community as well. “We’re excited to become a part of an ever increasing artisan community that is building in Nyack. It’s an honor to be the first brewery in such a progressive and independent town, and we plan to give back however we can, one beer at a time,” said Jonathan speaking on behalf of Two Villains Brewing. Because of the menu, no dogs are able to enter— unfortunate for those with fur babies. But they are family-friendly for sure: it seems like the perfect spot to finish up a nice Nyack visit with a cold one (or few) and some good eats. Come October, you’ll know where to find us. E

When you work at three separate jobs over the course of six years with someone, you get to know them pretty well. Now add beer into the mix. We’re just two Rockland ladies who enjoy drinking beer on the weekends–and weekdays. Our day jobs are a little different: Jonna has a position in marketing & social media and Sara is a tattoo artist. @boozyhops

THE TOP 10 PLACES

TO ENJOY FALL FOLIAGE COMPILED BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Bear Mountain Scenic Overlook provides a beautiful view of the Hudson River 54 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

A

re you looking for the best scenic views of fall foliage this autumn? Rivertown Magazine photographer Samantha Finch shares her top 10 places for you to visit this fall to see the transition of the seasons.

Bear Mountain Scenic Overlook

Located directly across the beautiful Bear Mountain Bridge that joins Rockland/Orange counties with Westchester/Putnam counties, is a scenic overlook about a mile down the “goat trail” (U.S. 6) in Cortlandt, NY. Take a drive and stop for a beautiful view of the Hudson, especially as you watch the sun set on the west side of the Hudson.

Sam’s Point at Shawangunk Mountains

Sam’s Point Preserve is one of the highest points of the Shawangunk Mountains in Ulster County: you can bet it has some of the best fall views around. While the total loop trail includes an 8.3-mile hike, where you will witness the 180-foot Verkeerderkill Falls and majestic Ice Caves, you can also hike a mile clockwise to see Sam’s Point itself. Arrive early since the parking is limited.

Perkin’s Memorial Tower

Drive or hike the 3.8-mile out and back portion of the Appalachian Trail to the top of Bear Mountain to experience vast views of the Hudson River Highlands in all its glory. On a clear day, see the outline of the New York City skyline. Visit multiple times during the autumn season to watch as the trees turn from green to orange, yellow, or red. The tower, which is open April through November, provides a 360-degree viewpoint of fall along the Hudson River.

Plum Point Park

Take a ride upstate to New Windsor and view the mountains along the eastern side of the Hudson as they change color for the season. This park is the perfect spot for a picnic or for some mild hiking with beautiful views. Kid and pet friendly, this location brings you directly up to the Hudson for some of the most majestic views. RivertownMagazine.com / 55

Prospect Mountain, Lake George

If you are looking for the perfect place for a fall weekend getaway and to find the best foliage views imaginable, look no further than Lake George’s Prospect Mountain. Situated right in the heart of the Adirondacks, approximately 2,030 feet above the “Queen of Americas Lakes” on the top of Prospect Mountain, you can see the expansive panoramic views of the Adirondacks. Whether you drive up to the summit and have a picnic, or hike up 2.8 miles there and back, the view from the top is definitely worth your time.

Fort Montgomery Historic Site

Perched on a cliff overlooking the majestic Hudson River, this historic Revolutionary War battle site features a museum and hiking trails along the Hudson River Basin. From the top of the 9W overpass in the town of Highlands, see spectacular fall views of the Eastern Side of the river. From the bottom, walk along the trails among the historical artifacts down to a walking bridge over a Hudson River inlet that brings you to just under the Bear Mountain Bridge.

The stunning view from atop Lake George’s Prospect Mountain

Old Mansion Road in Blooming Grove, NY

Unlike many of the others on this list, this particular viewpoint can be accessed by a simple drive up north onto U.S. 6 towards Wallkill, once you exit at 129. Follow the road and make your first left and then your first right on to Old Mansion Road. As your drive up the incline, you will see Mediacom on your right; on your left you will see a beautiful view of Goosepond Mountain. While the view is unbelievable (especially at sunset), there are also beautiful trees lining that road in array of colors in the fall. This hidden gem is definitely worth the stop!

Delaware Valley River Gap/Hawk’s Nest

About an hour and a half northwest of Nyack near Deerpark, NY, Hawk’s Nest is a scenic winding drive along the mountains nestled high above the Delaware River and is part of the “Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.” In the fall, this tree-lined road transforms into an autumnal wonder that rivals our New England counterparts.

Nestled high above the Delaware River, The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway is a gorgeous tree-lined drive.

Lake Massawippa along Long Mountain Parkway

Long Mountain Parkway is a picturesque drive through Harriman State Park heading towards the Palisades Traffic Circle. Along the way, there is a parking area off to the left on Baileytown Road. You can park and walk towards the parkway to view 2 of the 31 lakes in Harriman State Park. Lake Massawippa and Lake TeAta both have beautiful views of fall foliage and while there are some unmarked trails, the best views come from Long Mountain Parkway itself. Just be mindful of traffic.

Beautiful views of fall foliage on Lake Massawippa

Indian Brook Falls/Constitution Marsh

Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary is a beautiful Hudson River tidal marshland located in Cold Springs, NY, only a short distance from the Bear Mountain Bridge. Enjoy a mile-long hike in either direction to view Indian Brook Falls or a boardwalk view over the protected marshland ecosystem. In the fall, enjoy the changing colors of the mountains across the river or the leaf-covered path to the falls. In addition, visit constitution.audubon.org to view the Audubon Center’s many wildlife programs. L

with Phil Bunton She turned and said: “For the fifth time, it’s chicken!” That’s when I realized it was me who had the hearing problem. The next thing I know, I was locked in a sound-proof booth being zapped with various electron pings and zits. The skilled folks at Costco were checking how bad my problem was. And sure enough I needed hearing aids.

Hearing Aids and Superheroes I told my doctor that I was concerned that my wife was losing her hearing. I didn’t want to embarrass her, but I wanted to check if she really had a problem. The doctor told me of an easy test: stand 50 feet away and talk to her. If she doesn’t hear, move to 40 feet, and if she doesn’t hear, move to 30 feet. And so on. So that night I decided to test it. “Hi, honey, what’s for dinner?“ I asked from a distance of 50 feet. No response. So I moved closer. My wife was in the kitchen with her back to me. “Hi, honey, what’s for dinner?” Still no reply. I moved closer again. Still no reply. So I moved until I was right behind her and said: “Honey, what’s for dinner?”

60 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

Thank goodness today’s hearing aids are almost impossible to spot. I don’t have to explain to anyone why I’ve got bits of plastic in my ears. So how is my hearing now? Pretty good. I hear all sorts of sounds I never heard before. I hear the floor creaking when I cross it. Really. I can hear people behind me breathing. I can even hear a cockroach cough, my device is so sensitive. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of all these superhero movies. Every week a new one comes out. And every week there are fewer movies I want to see. There’s Aquaman, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, Wonder Woman and much much more. I’ve seen a few, and I come out of the theater with no idea of what the plot was. The superhero destroyed the Western World from the Eiffel Tower to London’s Tower Bridge. But it all ended happily. You know the plot by heart.

So how about some superheroes for those of us over 50? SuperCrone, Wonder Granny, the Chunk and so on. Here are some superhero jokes for you. Where do most superheroes live? Cape Town. What does Peter Parker tell people when they ask what he does for a living? He says he’s a web designer. Batman and Robin go camping in the desert. They find a suitable spot, pitch their tent and fall asleep. In the middle of the night, Batman wakes his faithful friend and says: “Robin, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.” Robin replies: “Why Batman, I see millions of stars.” Batman asks him: “And what does that tell you?” Robin thinks about this for a bit and says: “Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies, and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Meteorologically, it looks like we’re in for a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Batman?” Batman is also silent for a moment, then says: “Robin, you idiot, someone has stolen our tent.” L

FIRST CHRISTINE CORDEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND AWARDED STORY BY COREY RANDO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CHRISTINE CORDEY SALON

It is with great excitement and anticipation to announce that the first ever Christine Cordey Scholarship grant has been awarded. This scholarship, given annually to a select student studying cosmetology in either Rockland or Orange County, is the first of many more to come—a goal that Christine “Cordey” Locurto can now cross off her bucket list. “I did it. I can say I did it. I gave back to something that gave to me.” Over the past year, Christine Cordey Salon has been accepting donations, as well as giving a partial amount of its earnings, to raise money for the scholarship, becoming the only salon in Rockland County to do so. The scholarship has been held by the Rockland Community Foundation, and people have been able to donate either through the foundation’s website or through the salon’s Facebook page. And now, backed by overwhelming support, the scholarship has been awarded to fellow graduate Janice Garcia, of the Capri Cosmetology School in Nanuet. Capri is considered one of the leading cosmetology schools in the tri-state area, and also where Christine Cordey is an alumnus. “I remember not being able to pay for beauty school. This [scholarship] isn’t pocket money. This is for somebody who wants this, and wants to make a better life for themselves because of it.” One of the driving forces this scholarship also attempts to bring forth is the continued need for students in trade schools and blue collar jobs. These have seen a significant decrease in enrollment numbers, and Christine is hoping to break that mold. “There are tons of scholarships for academia, and there is nothing for trade schools. There will always be a need for stylists and blue collar jobs.” She is hoping that this 62 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

scholarship will push students to keep an open mind when considering these schools, such as Capri. The scholarship is a true testament to the communityfocused nature of the Salon. Since its conception six years ago, Christine and her team have worked tirelessly to show that they are more than just a place to get your hair done. She uses the word “hub” or “conduit” to describe her salon, and pleads that “if you want to do something good, do it through our community.”

continuing in such a close-knit bunch. For Janice, Christine Cordey Salon, and all of Rockland County, celebrate the effort and success of giving back on October 8 at the Hudson House. L

—Christine “Cordey” Locurto Owner, Christine Cordey Salon

Christine is no stranger to this concept, having given ample amounts back to the community through the Nyack Center for School Supplies, Soup Angels, or providing dog and cat food to the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center. This scholarship is just one of the many things Christine is doing to ‘pay it forward’ in a community that has helped her get to where she is now. To celebrate the success of the scholarship, Christine Cordey Salon and friends will be hosting an event on Tuesday, October 8th, at the Hudson House on Main Street in Nyack. This cocktail hour event will begin at 6:30 pm, and will honor the recipient, Janice, and all those who donated toward a great cause. “I want her to know she’s supported,” says Christine. “I need her to understand the gift.” All are welcome to attend the celebration, not only as a way to support Janice and the scholarship, but the Nyack and Rockland communities as a whole. “The larger picture [of the event] is that this is something Christine accomplished, not just for herself, but for her community,” said Sam Boudrot, who has worked at the salon for three years. Nyack and the neighboring villages are home to some hidden treasures within Rockland County. Christine Cordey Salon is just one of many places that give back to their community in some capacity, and it’s refreshing to see this idea of “paying it forward”

YOU AND YOUR TAXES

Are My Parents’ Home Care Expenses Tax Deductible? That is the question that I am hearing more and more as my clients begin to face the inevitable issue of caring for their aging parents. Particularly nonmedical “custodial care.” We all want to postpone, or totally avoid, these important discussions. Well, for now, let’s take a look at the positive side of this difficult issue: saving taxes. If you or a family member needs home health care, and you live in New York, plan on it costing about $22 per hour. People who are paying for home health care often overlook the valuable tax deductions that can help to offset this burden. Confusion about this issue is largely based upon the fact that these expenses are not covered by Medicare or other health insurance because the care can safely be given by someone without a medical degree. This is called custodial care. The IRS does not have a similar rule and permits a medical deduction for custodial care. The IRS rules clearly define qualified tax deductible long term care and its specific requirements. This definition includes the words, “personal care services,” which is the specific language that allows a tax deduction for custodial care. The term “personal care services” is defined as any care 68 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

the primary purpose of which is to assist a chronically ill individual. This includes nursing care provided by a nonprofessional, and it may include the cost of personal and household services (light house cleaning, etc.) that are also provided by that person. The services can be provided in the recipient’s home or other care facility. A chronically ill individual is defined as “any individual who has been certified by a licensed health care provider as being unable to perform at least two of six specified activities of daily living (eating, toileting, transferring, bathing, dressing, and continence) for a period of at least 90 days due to a loss of functional capacity,” or, any person who requires substantial supervision to be protected from threats to health and safety due to severe cognitive impairment. Basically, a person who is unable to safely live alone due to a disability or an illness may qualify for this tax deduction. To qualify as a tax deduction, the care must be provided pursuant to a plan of care prescribed by a licensed health care practitioner. The expenses must be documented out-of-pocket costs that are not reimbursed by insurance or any other source. These expenses may be deductible by the care recipient or a child thereof who claims that parent as a dependent on his or

Taking the Guesswork out of Medicare With Mark Brownstein, Independent Insurance Agent Specializing in Medicare Health Plans

I’m Signed Up for Medicare Part A and B. Do I Need Medicare Part C or Medigap? As a longtime independent, licensed insurance agent, I hear this question all the time. Once you have established Parts A and B of Original Medicare, you have two choices available: Medicare Advantage plans (also called Medicare Part C) or Medicare Supplemental plans (Medigap). Both options could help you save in out-of-pocket expenses not covered by Part B but in different ways: Medicare Advantage replaces your Part B coverage, and Medigap supplements it. Medicare Advantage are managed and administered by private insurance companies, but they must include the same benefits as Original Medicare. Any basic services available under Part A and Part B must also be included in a Medicare Advantage Plan. Similar to employer coverage with HMO and PPO plan options, you will have co-pays, deductibles, and they are offered at no or low cost premium options. A Medicare Advantage plan may also include various levels of dental, vision, gym memberships, hearing aids, chiropractic services, acupuncture, transportation and other items that are not covered by a traditional Medicare Part B plan. Another huge bonus: Medicare Advantage plans include a Part D prescription plan. There will be no need to get a separate prescription drug plan. With a Medicare Advantage plan, your out-of-pocket costs are more predictable, as long as you use the plan’s in-network providers. With a Medicare Supplemental or Medigap plan, you have freedom of choice in your medical care. You use Original Medicare Part A and B, and the Medigap plan pays AFTER Medicare, covering the other 20% of costs

of your Part B coverage. You can see any physician or healthcare provider that participates in Medicare (nearly 900,000 providers across the nation), which is very helpful if you plan to travel or have multiple homes in the United States. These plans cost more than Advantage plans because they are more comprehensive, but they give you more freedom in choosing your providers. Although these plans have a higher monthly premium than the Medicare Advantage plans, they typically have no or limited co-pays and cover higher ticket items like surgeries and cancer treatments. They take the worry out of unexpected out-of-pocket costs. Understanding all of the different Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans can be confusing and difficult, depending on what type of coverage you are looking for. But taking the time to learn about them could mean substantial savings to you in the long run. Emerald Medicare’s local, experienced, licensed insurance agents understand and educate on Medicare each day. Our team is here to help, and there’s absolutely no cost to you for our services. Creative People Benefit From Taking CBD People seek the benefits of CBD for a variety of reasons. While some use CBD for recovery, others may use it to regulate sleep or to promote brain health. If you’re an artist, writer, musician or simply a creative individual, you and your craft may benefit from taking CBD. The Brain of a Creative Person Studies show that creativity is a cognitive neuroscience. Through advances in brain imaging technology, scientists can now see the ways 74 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

in which creativity affects the brain; creativity is generated through specific neural circuit pathways that involve memory, consciousness, spontaneity and even deliberate decision-making. Practicing creativity involves “whole brain” thinking. Practicing creativity is a mental workout! Neuro-scientific research says that mental tasks, including creativity, exhaust the brain. As much as creative individuals know how rewarding the creative process can be, it does not happen without a lot of hard work, concentration and mental stimuli. CBD for Creative Recovery Many creative people understand that they require some recovery time following the completion of a

large project. Creative work, such as writing, design, or artwork, can be draining even when it’s your ultimate passion. If you can’t sneak away for a mental vacation, CBD can help with creative recovery. The neuro-protective antioxidant properties of CBD have been known and studied for decades. In particular, studies show that CBD works as an antioxidant to keep neuropathy functioning to its full potential. Knowing how demanding creative work can be, even if it’s for pleasure, a daily dose of CBD can help you to recover and dive into your next project with a fresh eye and well-rested brain. CBD for Tension and Stress As therapeutic as creative work

Creative Minds Benefit from CBD Having a creative mind affects people differently. While creating is one of the most rewarding things on the planet, it can also be exhausting for your brain, impact your stress levels, and even affect your sleep. Creative people can ameliorate some negative qualities that often go hand in hand with being creative. ADORE YOUR BODY YOGA THE INJURIES EDITION PART ONE Dear Reader, can I tell you a story? Early in my yoga-teaching career I broke my foot. I had a plaster cast from my toes to my knee and could bear no weight. Did I stop doing yoga while my foot healed? NO WAY! Why? Because, yoga is a pathway to the body, and this period of trauma was not the time to cut the connection. Think of it like this. A dear friend loses their sight. Do you stop visiting just because they cannot see you? Hopefully not! You alter the friendship’s nature to accommodate the situation. Your body is your best friend, and it needs you more than ever during moments of trauma. Do not abandon your injured parts. Yoga is the energy we use to create a

bodily connection; it’s how we form and maintain a relationship with this aspect of our Self. In times of need, stand by your best friend! People are often bewildered by this story of my broken foot, my cast and me. How did you do yoga like that? Confusion arises because “what yoga is” is confined to their own physical experience, often

as an athletic endeavor requiring one’s legs. But “yoga” can mean many different things, and as a physical practice, it’s adaptable. With my broken foot, I did seated floor work and breathing exercises. I strengthened my abdominals and opened my hips. I stretched out my neck, wrists and arms, which were wrecked from the very hard work of crutching

around New York City in the winter. I adapted the practice to what I could do, and prioritized staying connected to a broken, but healing body. This leads to an important question, which I will take a number of columns to answer.

Q: Should I do yoga when I’m injured? A: It depends. Here are few things to keep in mind, as you consider whether to go to yoga, or not: 1. Is your injury acute (meaning, presently active, and causing you pain)? 2. Is it a chronic injury? Do you have a diagnosis? 3. How did you acquire it? At yoga? Doing a sport? Just “being”? 4. What kind of yoga are you thinking of doing? 5. Do you do yoga in a class or with a private instructor? We’ll tackle some of these scenarios in forthcoming columns. Stay tuned! L

HOLDING OUT HOPE: CLARKSTOWN’S NEW APPROACH TO DRUG ADDICTION STORY BY JOSEPH KUHN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMANTHA FINCH

Hope Not Handcuffs Program partners with Clarkstown P.D. to help control the area’s growing substance abuse problem.

T

he Clarkstown Police Department is ready to try something new, after years of struggling to contain a growing substance abuse epidemic that has ravaged the community. Rockland’s finest have partnered with Hope Not Handcuffs, an “initiative aimed at bringing law enforcement and community organizations together to find viable treatment options for those hoping to reduce dependencies on drugs and alcohol.” Hope Not Handcuffs’ method can be summarized in one word: compassion. The volunteers or “Angels” that make up the organization focus their efforts on aiding rather than punishing substance abusers. The police departments that partner with the program become safe havens for users seeking treatment. Any person struggling with addiction can walk into the building and request to speak with an Angel. Once they do, a volunteer will be called to the station to help them fill out the paperwork necessary to apply to a rehab 88 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

facility and provide invaluable emotional support until a treatment option is found. “A lot of people don’t want to come forward because of the stigma,” explained Michie Christiana, one of the first Angels to volunteer in Rockland. Breaking that stigma is one of the major reasons HNH was formed. The Angels provide a safe space for substance abusers, where they’ll be treated with the respect and kindness so often denied them. They believe that is the key to getting people to come forward and seek treatment instead of causing further harm. Angels work to relieve stress for substance abusers and their families so they can better focus on recovery. Those the Angels help are often grateful for even the most basic acts of decency. “It was the first handshake they’d probably ever had,” said retired police officer Richard Dixon when recalling the relieved expression of one of the men he greeted during his time as an Angel.

(L-R) Lisa Dixon, Christina Michie, Danielle Manna, Cathy Kennedy.

Many of the volunteers that make Hope Not Handcuffs “had their heart and soul personally touched by the epidemic,” said Caren Schwartz, the Angel who brought them to Rockland. Caren, who also volunteers for the Friends of Recovery Rockland, reached out to the Hudson Valley HNH in January after a friend told her about her the organization. Since then the Piermont P.D. has become an official participating partner; Clarkstown and Orangetown are set to join them in September and October respectively.

Hope Not Handcuffs also represents a communal response to a problem that may be more effective than traditional policing. Reaching out to people instead of repeatedly arresting them for possession or locking them up “can save police resources” and address the root of the problem. “We are treating the flu, not the cough symptom,” explained Sergeant Farina. R

Local police have been enthusiastic about the program. Lieutenant Michael Shannon of the Orangetown P.D. and Capitan Jeff Wanamaker of the Clarkstown P.D. are “excited” to participate in HNH and called it a vital “prearrest diversion.” They agreed it offers substance abusers a chance to reform their behavior before becoming desperate enough to require police involvement. David Lothrop, Clarkstown P.D.’s Chaplin, is also enthused. “The situation has gotten out of hand,” said the Chaplin when referring to the opioid epidemic. Chaplin Lothrop is responsible for delivering the department’s death notifications and he’s “gotten busier” in recent years. He “considerably hopes” that the Angels will be able to change that. “There is much we can resolve,” explained the program’s law enforcement liaison Detective Sergeant Guy Farina, citing violent crimes such as “robberies, shootings, homicides,” which he believes can be prevented through HNH’s efforts.

How To Volunteer To join or become an angel, register at: tricountycommunitypartnership.org/hopenot-handcuffs. Those that volunteer their time to HNH digitally coordinate their efforts so every participating precinct always has an angel on call. Angels work in shifts from 10AM–4PM & 4PM–10AM and will help anyone seeking to overcome their disease.

TINNITUS: COMMON, CONSTANT, INCURABLE, BUT VERY MANAGEABLE Hudson Valley Audiology Center Helps You Control Your Symptoms STORY BY JEFFREY SHANNON, Au.D. | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HUDSON VALLEY AUDIOLOGY CENTER

90 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

T

innitus is a perception of ringing, roaring, or hissing sound in your head or your ears. It’s typically, but not always, related to a hearing problem. Tinnitus is an extremely common symptom that is most often associated with hearing loss and stress. Most everyone has experienced at least momentary tinnitus, in fact over 20% of the general population and over 70% of people with hearing impairment have tinnitus that is present on a more than occasional basis. It occurs because the brain tries to compensate for the lack of proper stimulation from the ear, and also because the emotional system locks on it due to the fear of unknown consequences of perceiving this annoying signal. Fortunately, most people with tinnitus find it to be little more than a minor annoyance, however others can be severely stressed by it, to the extent that anxiety and stress is increased, and there may be in interference with sleep, concentration, relaxation and overall quality of life. I have evaluated and treated people with tinnitus for almost 12 years. My initial work began at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) at the Portland VA Hospital. During that time, we learned much about how the brain and nervous system work together to either suppress or attend to tinnitus. Techniques have certainly changed with further knowledge and research, but what has become abundantly clear is the benefit that can be obtained from a combination of counseling, education, and the use of certain sounds, including music and properly programmed hearing aids. You may have been told that there is no cure for tinnitus and that you just have to learn to live with it. There’s a big difference, however, between no cure and no help. A select number of audiologists throughout the country have been trained in techniques, technology and procedures to help patients learn how to ignore tinnitus but allowing the brain to suppress these unwanted meaningless signals in a natural manner.

youth opportunities to develop communication and leadership skills, and awarded scholarships to college-bound high school graduates. “Start with Rotary and good things happen,” said President Christian Sampson. He thanked all Rotarians, Officers and Board of Directors for their hard work and commitment to service.

Determined on giving back, the two dedicated veterans have returned to Vietnam many times, built the Rose School for 500 students, and added another for 1,000 students. They continue to inspire Rotarians and friends to support orphanages, schools, hospitals, clinics, and clean water projects not only in Vietnam, but also in Jamaica, Guyana, and Honduras.

Spring Valley Rotary Past Presidents Howard Goldin and Ed Frank, co-founders of S.T.E.P. (Schools to End Poverty), were recognized for outstanding international service. A project originally to raise funds for an ambulance for a rural clinic in Vietnam, where both had served as warriors, grew to “a wave of humanitarian projects,” fellow Past President Larry Beckerle recalled.

Newly-installed President Seraphim Wood emphasizes the concept of teamwork, and invites the entire club “All Aboard,” with “oneness of mind and common purpose,” to provide service above self, take action, and make a difference in our community and across the globe. PLANNING YOUR ESTATE: TITLES MATTER The first step in developing a will, trust or other estate document is to get a handle on your assets. Because assets can be owned in a number of ways, each of which have their own legal implications, understanding how your assets are owned (or “titled”) is a very important piece of the puzzle. Simple Individual Ownership. When an asset is titled solely in your name, with no joint owners and no designated beneficiary, it will be part of your general estate upon your death. This means that the asset will go through the probate process and will be distributed to the beneficiaries named in your will. If there is a trust established under your will, the asset will pass to your named Trustee and will be distributed in accordance with the dictates of the trust. Beneficiary-Designated Ownership. Many assets such as investment accounts, retirement accounts, speciallytitled bank accounts and insurance products are owned subject to a payable-on-death designation. This means that you own the asset in full during your lifetime, but upon your death, ownership automatically passes to your designated beneficiary (or beneficiaries) without the need for probate. Thus, these types of assets are said to pass “outside of your will.”

Jointly-Owned Property. Assets are often owned simultaneously by two or more people. This is called joint ownership, and there are three main types, the distinction among them having to do with the rights of the surviving owner when one joint owner dies. In a Tenancy in Common, the share of the deceased owner passes to his or her heirs. So, if Andy and Betty, two friends, own a house in this manner, Andy’s heirs will inherit his half upon his death and Betty’s heirs will inherit her half upon hers. Conversely, in a Joint Tenancy with Rights of Survivorship (JTWROS), the share of the first party to die automatically becomes vested in the surviving owner, so in the previous hypothetical, assuming Andy dies first, Betty would own the house in full and Andy’s heirs would own nothing. A Tenancy by the Entirety is a JTWROS form of ownership available only to married couples and offers additional protection from creditors. The lesson is this—the way you own your assets matters and should be given careful consideration as part of your estate planning.

ASK THE LENDER

SCOTT FORMAN DIVISIONAL VICE PRESIDENT THE POWER OF OPTIONS – REFINANCING OPTIONS FOR YOUR MORTGAGE Refinancing your home can be a great financial tool to get you in a better financial position. If you can shave off money from your monthly mortgage payment, and you plan on staying in your home for the next five or more years, then refinancing most likely is a smart move. Here are two popular refinance options: Rate & Term Refinance – This allows you to lower your rate and change your loan program. Maybe you can reduce your rate by 1% or you currently are in an FHA loan with Mortgage Insurance that can now be eliminated. These are two popular reasons to refinance with a Rate & Term!

Scott Forman is a Divisional President for CrossCountry Mortgage, Inc., managing a lending group of 40+ locations nationwide. Forman grew up in Rockland County and currently resides in New Jersey where he is the CoPresident of The Montvale

Chamber of Commerce. Cash-Out-Refinance – If you have equity in your home, pull out some of that cash! Popular reasons for cash-out refinances are using the money toward renovations or paying down debt. Often the interest rate on those credit cards or student loans are significantly higher than the interest rate on the mortgage making it a smart move to consolidate.

Here’s what to ask yourself before making a decision on refinancing: 1. How much equity do I have in my home? Home equity is key to refinancing. Equity represents the portion of the home you own yourself (the amount you would get if you sold today minus what’s left on your mortgage). Check your credit score and review your credit report. 2. What is my credit score? Has your credit score improved since buying your home and making regular on-time payments? If so, you could qualify for a lower rate. 3. What are your goals with the home? If you plan to sell your home in a couple years, you may not be the best refinance candidate. Refinancing does come with closing costs, and it is important to weigh them out to make sure the monthly savings exceeds the time you’re in the home so you can reap the benefits and recoup those closing costs. Even with this information, chances are you’ll still need guidance in identifying the right move for you. Everyone’s situation is unique, and everyone’s financial goals are different. Email any topic suggestion to me and if your question is selected, we will send you a $100 Home Depot Gift Card. Please email all questions to info@foremanteam.com.

ASK YOUR REALTOR By Frank Mancione of Lydecker Realty

Question What’s the difference between a Short Sale and a REO sale? Answer A short sale occurs when a homeowner who is “underwater” on their home sells it—meaning they owe more on the property than they can net in a sale. In this situation, there are 3 parties that need to agree to the terms of the sale (buyer, seller and seller’s lender). An REO property has already been foreclosed upon, so the former owner has been evicted for non-payment, and the property is owned by the former lender. In the case of a REO, there are only 2 parties who agree to the sale, the buyer and owner (which in this case is the former lender). REO transactions tend to be quicker, since there are fewer parties and less steps involved. Question I really love a house I saw on the river, although I question if it’s ever had flooding. How would I get information about this? Answer Flood maps are provided by FEMA and your Realtor should have access to them. Your local Building Department may also have records which indicate construction or other maintenance performed as a result of flood damage. You can also contact your insurance agent and ask for more information in this regard for a given property. Additionally, your insurance agent should be able to provide a quote for a flood insurance policy if this coverage is needed or desired.

Question I was thinking about purchasing an investment property. How does the process differ for an investment property from when I bought my home? Answer It’s basically the same process of getting through the bank (assuming there is a mortgage involved), however, in this case, you are being evaluated financially for your ability to cover your current expenses (home, other obligations) and additionally for the expenses of the investment property. Rental income for the investment property is factored-in to the equation; however, lenders usually only consider about 75% of the current rental income in qualifying you for the purchase. In addition, if it’s truly an investment property and not owner-occupied, lenders usually want down payments of 20%–25% at a minimum, so there is a larger spend required to purchase an investment property. Question I’ve heard that this time of year is not a great time to put my house on the market. Is this true? Answer I’ve always found this time of year between late-summer and the end-of-year holidays to be a good time to sell a home. Although it’s not the busiest time of year, it is a busy time, probably because children are back in school and people have typically returned from summer vacations and have time to turn their attention to other things. I would not hesitate to list your home at this time of year! R

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH HUDSON LINK STORY BY JOSEPH KUHN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BABITA PATEL

Graduating Class of 2019 with Mary Donnolly, Sullivan’s Academic Coordinator (left) and Dr. Meghan De Witt, Professor of Mathematics at STAC (right)

The students that make up the Hudson Link for Higher Education cohort at St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) aren’t what one would consider the typical college crowd. They stand out for a few reasons. First of all, they are textbook overachievers; every one of the 17 students that received a bachelor’s degree through the program made the Dean’s List. Many of the students, even those seeking associates certification, have graduated Cum Laude and several have achieved the highest honor of Summa Cum Laude. Secondly, they are all inmates in a maximum-security prison. Hudson Link for Higher Education, which first began in 1998, represents a coordinated effort to “provide a college education, life skills and reentry support 106 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women.” STAC is the latest school to partner up with the organization; the college now regularly sends staff members to Sullivan Correctional Facility to teach classes in everything from U.S. History to Psychology. The faculty aims to help incarcerated people “make a positive impact on their own lives, their families and communities.” The courses they teach and the degrees they help their students earn go a long way toward reintegrating them into society and providing them with the skills and experience necessary to live successful lives on the outside. So far eight colleges and five correctional facilities in total have joined up with Hudson Link to provide opportunities to over 600 prisoners seeking to better

themselves through higher education, and their numbers are growing.

be proud of,” explained Donnolly. Their participation “can set an example for their families.”

“Teaching through Hudson Link has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Benjamin Wagner, an assistant professor of psychology for STAC. When asked about their time with the program, Wagner and his colleagues shared nothing but praise for their new students’ performance: “(They) are very engaged, always do the readings/assignments ahead of time, and ask insightful and interesting questions. In fact, class generally becomes more of a discussion than a lecture, with all of the students contributing their unique perspectives and enriching the conversation.”

STAC’s cohort of the program, like several others, is funded entirely through private donations and has been a tremendous benefit to the community. Hudson Link students experience an “astonishingly low” recidivism rate of less than 2% compared to the 67% national average, allowing the state to save money and the students to re-enter society as productive citizens. So far they’ve awarded over 600 degrees to students throughout New York.

The Hudson Link students are incredibly driven, many of them forsaking exercise time and even phone calls with their family in order to dedicate more time to their studies. “They work full time while studying,” explained Mary Donnolly, Sullivan’s Academic Coordinator. The classes run year round and those enrolled are fully expected to continue their regular duties in the prison. Classes are highly structured and participants can be dropped from the courses for skipping even two sessions.

St. Thomas Aquinas celebrated its first graduating class of Hudson Link students this year and is actively working to expand the program. The STAC faculty have been “deeply impressed” by their new students and are excited to continue working with such dedicated learners. The program’s coordinators share that enthusiasm: “We are so proud of our partnership with St. Thomas Aquinas College in service of the men inside Sullivan Correctional Facility,” said Sean Pica, Executive Director for Hudson Link. “Every year these students blow us away with their dedication to academic excellence, and STAC faculty and administration are with the students and Hudson Link every step of the way.” R

Stacy Sewell, a professor of history who also serves as STAC’s Assistant Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences, observed that her Hudson Link students may work even harder than traditional pupils. The men have limited access to computers and other necessary research materials and less time to study, yet they consistently perform as well as the regular STAC students. “They are giving us 500%,” said Professor Sewell. “I love teaching here.” The professor was proud to share that some of her students chose to remain in Sullivan Correctional, which is a maximum security facility, instead of being transferred to a more lax environment, just so that they can continue pursuing their degree with STAC. Even those participants likely to spend the rest of their lives incarcerated have benefited from their time in Hudson Link. “It gives them something to

Marc Salem is one of the leading experts in non-verbal communication (also known as body language). You may have seen him on various news shows, helping the hosts read into statements, speeches and debates. If you haven’t, I would recommend you search the Web for “Marc Salem 60 Minutes.” Marc studied under the most important person in the field of Kinesics (non-verbal communication). After earning his PhD, he became a professor at NYU and received tenure at Manhattan College.

Marc gave up his academic career to become a Mentalist. Using his magic and Kinesics skills, he created a very successful show and career entertaining audiences around the world. He starred in two of his own television specials and a very successful, and critically acclaimed, Broadway show entitled “Mind Games.” In 2017, Marc and I teamed up to produce “Mind Games Reloaded.” I open the show with highlights from my comedy/magic act followed by Marc presenting highlights from his Broadway show. Since both of us have very busy lives, we have only been able to present the show a few times—each time the shows sold out and were very well received. We are booked to present it again on September 22nd at the Parlor Of Mystery/South Shore Theatre in Long Island and decided to also book it closer to home. With the help of John McAvoy and Harvey Leeds, we will be presenting it on Friday, September 20th at the historic Turning Point in Piermont. Tickets are only $25 per person with no food or drink minimums (I hate minimums… they always seem like a scam to me). For more information and tickets go to: MagicAfterDark.net

HOW TO PERFORM COIN IMPOSSIBLE MINDMELD What your friends think they see:

What really happens:

Your friend secretly puts a penny in one hand and a nickel in the other. After asking them to do some simple math you can deduce which coin is in which hand.

You are going to ask them to multiply the coin in each hand by 23. It will take them longer to multiply 5x23 than 1x23 tipping you off on where each coin is.

In poker, timing tells are among the most important in evaluating the strength of your opponents’ hands. How long it takes them to decide whether they will fold, check, call or raise is often a crucial piece of information.

But don’t stop there. Immediately point to the other hand and repeat the multiplication request and quick question. This will allow you to double-check on the accuracy of first timing tell and also hide the possible method.

Timing tells are also used as secret devices to gather information. This routine takes advantage of how long it will take someone to do simple math versus difficult math. That pause in thinking is a form of body language transmitting secret information to you.

You now ask them to add up their two totals and tell you what the final total is. 23+115=138. You obviously don’t need this information, but it is used as misdirection which hides the real secret.

Begin with two coins: a penny and a nickel. You can use your own coins or borrow them from your friend.

Instruct your friend to place one coin in each hand but not to let anyone see which coin is in which hand. Make sure they know where each coin is before you begin. Point to their left fist as you say, “I want you to take the value of the coin in that hand and multiply it by 23.” Immediately ask them, “Got it?” If they answer “yes” quickly, then the coin in the left hand is the penny, because it is very easy to multiply 23x1=23. If they pause to think for a few seconds before answering, they have the nickel in the left hand, since it takes much longer to multiply 23x5=115.

You can now reveal which hand has the penny and which hand has the nickel. How you reveal that information is up to you. You can say you have psychic abilities (not recommended), intuition, or even the ability to read their body language. Instead of using the number 23, you can have them multiply the coin’s value by their age or any reasonable number that can be meaningful to them or the present situation, like an anniversary or an address. Hope you have fun with this and hope to see you at the Turning Point on September 20th. Bring this issue and have us autograph it and take some photos with us after the show. R

GROOMING TIPS FOR THE BOLD AND THE BEARDED Fall is the perfect season to start growing a beard. It will give you time to have a nice, full beard by winter, plus protect your face from the crisp cold air. Learning how to shape a beard is an art that requires discipline and plenty of experimentation. Weekly appointments with a Master Barber for a professional beard trim is a nostalgic treat that will help your beard reach its full potential. The hot towels will soften the facial hair allowing for tight, straight razor edges and the high quality products will nourish the skin post-shave. Steve Zuccato, owner of D.S.Z. Barbers Inc., offers some great tips on how to grow and maintain a beard between visits to the barbershop.

Tip #1 Before you actually start to grow out your facial hair, it’s important to know which beard styles will flatter your face shape. Start by letting your beard grow out for a couple of days, study the growth pattern of your stubble and look at what you are working with. Not every man is genetically capable of growing a full beard so you may have to be creative and find a facial hairstyle that is right for you. Tip #2 Use clippers to trim to your preferred length. Always start with a longer clipper guard, to prevent accidentally cutting everything too short. If you’re looking for something simple, an even length all around is fine. There are a lot of ways to play with beard shapes, but the most universally flattering technique requires leaving the hairs a little longer around the chin and shorter on the sides of your face.

Steve Zuccato owner of D.S.Z. Barbers Inc in Nyack, (845) 348-1500 110 / Rivertown Magazine September 2019

Tip #3 Trimming the neckline is the trickiest part. The biggest way to compromise your beard is to trim it in the wrong place. If you stop too close to the jawbone, it will make it look like you have a double chin, even if you do not. Your safest bet is to trim everything below the Adam’s apple, but exactly where you want to draw the line can vary from person to person. Then you just extend that up in a soft curve towards your ears to create a “U” shape. Tip #4 Remember to wash and condition your beard regularly. Just like the hair on the top of your head, your beard needs moisture to stay healthy. Finish the whole process off with a good beard oil that will moisturize and help keep your facial hair looking its best.

Ask D.S.Z. to take a photo of your beard and it could be published in an upcoming Rivertown issue! RivertownMagazine.com / 111

THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO Directed by Joe Talbot With Danny Glover, Jimmie Fails, Jonathan Majors USA 2019, 121 minutes, rated R Jimmie Fails is trying to hold onto a sense of home in San Francisco. His parents are MIA, his old house is now lived in by others. He flops with a friend, while searching for home—both literal and existential. A dreamy, elegiac tale of self and safety, being and belonging, and a poignant and sweeping story of hometowns and how they’re made—and kept alive—by the people who love them.

SATAN & ADAM Directed by V. Scott Balcerek 2018, USA, 80 minutes, documentary This gritty, lovely documentary follows the unlikely musical partnership between Sterling “Mr. Satan” Magee, a black studio and backup musician for stars like Etta James, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and Adam Gussow, a white Princeton graduate who grew up in Rockland County. A chance meeting on the Harlem streets resulted in performances that attracted acclaim, including a record contract and recordings with U2. Life on the road took its toll; like the blues, their friendship combined pain mixed with real beauty.

Introduced by Bill Batson (Nyack Sketch Log), who will be available for further discussion after the film. “This isn’t just a story about displaced communities, it’s about displaced souls, people so connected to history that they never feel quite at home in the present.” —Stephanie Zacharek, Time Magazine

Remarkable: Dear Evan Hansen Makes Musical History

Rivertown Review by Tom Riley | Photography by Matthew Murphy

I

f you haven’t seen the Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen in New York City, I command you to see it. This play has won six Tony Awards including Best Musical. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Lisa Brescia gives a powerful performance as the mother of Evan Hansen, a teenager who suffers from social anxiety. Lisa is a multi-talented actress who has toured the world early in her career as a singer/actress and now she commands center stage on The Great White Way. She has been in the role of Heidi Hansen for a year now but has starred as Donna in “Mamma Mia!” and Elphaba in “Wicked” and Cleo in Twyla Tharp’s “The Time They Are A-Changin” among many other starring roles.

Lisa Brescia (left) gives a powerful performance as Evan’s mom in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway. Pictured below: Andrew Barth Feldman, who plays the role of Evan, and Lisa Brescia in a scene from the musical.

“This role as the mother of Evan Hansen has heightened my respect for parents and single mothers. I also love the humor in the show and the hilarity allows the audience to be open to their feelings,” said Brescia who has an MFA in Classical Acting. “I started out as a Vacation Cover in this role and now I’ve been here a year. It’s great to still see sold-out houses; a number of people have seen it over and over again with new friends and relatives.” Dear Evan Hansen is one of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history. It is playing at The Music Box located at 239 West 45th Street in NYC. You can order tickets by calling 212-239-6200 or 800-447-7400 or visit www.telecharge.com. R
