ARTHUR HILLER (LOVE STORY)
Author! Author! not only highlights Al Pacino’s versatility but also delves into the complexities of balancing creativity with parenthood. As a struggling playwright juggling his career and the responsibility of caring for several children, Pacino’s character navigates a whirlwind of personal and professional challenges with authenticity and humor. This unique blend of artistic ambition and family dynamics adds depth to the fi lm, making it a standout in Pacino’s diverse repertoire.
After his daughter, Avery, was born, John gave it all up — hobbies, friends, a dream job — to be something more: a super dad. Since then, he’s spent nearly every waking second with Avery, who’s his absolute best bud. Or, at least, she was.
When now eleven-year-old Avery begins transforming into an eye-rolling zombie of a preteen who dreads spending time with him, a desperate John whisks her away for a weeklong father-daughter retreat to get their relationship back on track before she starts middle school.
But John’s attempts to bond only seem to drive his daughter further away, and his instincts tell him Avery’s hiding something more than just preteen angst. Even worse, the camp is far from the idyllic getaway he had in mind. John fi nds himself navigating a group of toxic dads that can’t seem to get along, cringe-worthy forced bonding activities, and a camp director that has it out for him. With camp and summer break slipping away fast, John’s determined to conquer it all for a chance to become Avery’s hero again.
This brilliant and deeply funny father-daughter story is perfect for fans of poignant and hilarious books like The Guncle by Steven Rowley, Steve Martin’s family classic Cheaper by the Dozen , and Judd Apatow’s bighearted comedies.

ENDURING GOLGOTHA: Considerations as You Run
BY MIKE MAZYCK
“… let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
(Hebrews 12:1–3)
Will you take a journey with me, in humble obedience to His word, as we consider Him
18 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2024 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE
He would be brutally beaten, mocked, spit on, and have His beard ripped violently from His face. They would press down hard as His crown’s long, sharp thorns sank into His scalp and pressed against His skull. And with blood pouring down His head — His face already marred and disfigured —He would know His torture and suffering had just begun; they were just getting warmed up.
At the next stop, they would secure His body in place as two Roman soldiers — one on His left and the other on the right — took turns violently swinging the Roman flagrum across the back of His body. They say the ends of that whip would have been fastened with shards of sheep bone or metal balls. As each strike landed, the Roman soldier would then yank the fl agrum inward, ensuring he wasn’t just breaking the flesh open but also ripping through it. Why two soldiers? Because they said the job was too exhausting for one to do well — and they believed in excellence. The back of His body would be torn to shreds as the jeering crowd watched on. Then, when the thrashing was fi nally over, with bones and even organs likely exposed, they would tell Him… “Get up! Pick up that cross and head up that hill.”
And so He did! He bent over and somehow hoisted those heavy wooden beams across the exposed nerve endings of His back. And with His eyes fi xed on the destination and the end of that wooden cross dragging behind Him, He would begin trudging up that hill. His left foot fueled by righteous fury, Holy indignation, His right foot, by a fi erce and insatiable love for His bride. And like any great climber, who with each grueling step, would ponder the reward of standing atop the summit, He would also ponder the prize that awaited Him at the top of that hill — a hammer, with four long, thick nails lying by its side. But the fury and love were too great; He would march on!
Finally, with one last step of triumph, He would reach the peak of that hill. Although He had made the summit, He still had not reached His final destination. He must go higher! And
like a marathon runner who turns that last corner and fi nds himself confl icted as he fi xes his eyes on the fi nish line. He is exhausted and sees that his race is almost over. Everything within him wants to slow down, but instead, he must sprint!
He would not open His mouth — only silence. The gentle and lowly Lamb of God would now stoop low for the last time. He would willingly take one knee at a time and then lay Himself across those wooden beams, spreading His arms wide as if making His fi nal invitation.
With one hand, the soldier would line up the nail with precision while tightening his grip on the hammer with the other. As he reared the hammer back, I wonder: Did our Lord see through the eyes of Isaac for a moment — fastened to the altar — as he watched his father raise the knife up high? Unlike the story of Abraham, though, He knew there would be no voice of rescue coming from the Heavens. He was the voice! He could stop this tragedy at any time He pleased… but He wouldn’t. He would continue His march down that lonely and narrow path His Father had planned for Him — the hammer must come down!
With one crushing blow after another, those nails would plunge deeper and deeper into His bones. They would attach Him to that wooden altar, one limb at a time. He was close — but He still had not arrived.
With each of His limbs properly secured to the altar, the soldiers would gather around those wooden beams and lift Him high, all the while making sure the base of that wooden cross lined up with the hole they had dug for it. Then, with one final jolt of His body and bones, that cross would come slamming down into the bottom of that hole!
AND THERE HE HUNG! Alone and humiliated. A spectacle for all to see. Gasping for each breath. Stripped of His clothing. His flesh mangled and torn. Blood splattered and spilling everywhere. He had fi nally arrived at His destination — that messy place we call the altar!
My friend, has your race taken you to one of those hills of suffering? Are you
standing at the bottom and staring up at a summit that seems like it’s a hundred miles high? Are you trudging right now? Is each tiny step you take the fi ght of your life?
Be encouraged by those words to the Hebrews. Look to Him, and do not grow weary. Consider often what He endured. Do not quit! The next step is all that matters. This life is a vapor, like the exhale of your breath on a cold winter morning. In just a moment, you will arrive! The fi nish line is just around the corner.
A thousand years from now, as you’re dancing with eternal joy, and your radiance shines brighter than a star in the heavens — what will this hill be then? It will be like that dream you can’t remember as you crawl out of bed in the morning; you’ll know it happened and consider it for a brief moment, but then you will remember it was some insignificant vapor and quickly get back to your dance!
But on the other hand, maybe your race has taken you to the fl atlands. Maybe you just descended your hill. Maybe you feel that you’re in the lead. Are you tempted to slow your pace? May you hear with humility the words of our brother Peter…
“…conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” (1 Peter 1:17–19)
May you run with great fear, as you consider what the Lamb of God endured, and the price He paid to purchase you. May you not be tempted to look to your right, and to your left, at all those other runners, who run their race casually. Do not compare yourself with those runners whose strides are fi lled with levity and laughter. With every casual stride they take, the sole of their foot tramples on His precious blood. May you never forget that in this race, it’s the way you run that shows what team you are on – not the jersey you wear!

Let’s talk about your feet. Did you know your foot is broken up into three unique sections? The “forefoot” is comprised of your toes (phalanges) and the five longer bones (metatarsals) connected to them. The “midfoot” includes all the bones that make up your arches (navicular, cuboid, and cuneiform). Your “hindfoot” is your heel (calcaneus) and ankle (talus) bones. Put them all together and you have that amazing complex that allows you to really smash it on the pickleball court, jump into that line dance at the next wedding reception, or simply get through your day meeting anything life throws at you.
It’s for your hard-working, hardplaying feet the doctors at Accent Podiatry Associates devout their days to making sure they’re looking, feeling, and working the way they should. These guys are like the Sherlock Holmes of feet (or Hercule Poirot if you prefer) spending time with each patient, assessing the appearance and condition of their feet, listening to them, and looking for important clues about their overall health.
If you’re over certain age, you may find that wear and tear, overuse, years of poor shoe choices, trauma, or genetics have led to issues with your foot that are interfering with your day-to-day life. It’s for you the Accent Podiatry would like to say:
Daily pain isn’t just a symptom of aging—or it doesn’t have to be.

SOME COMMON
FOOT CONDITIONS
EXPLAINED
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. This condition typically manifests as heel pain, particularly with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest, which can gradually worsen throughout the day. Although the exact cause is unknown, plantar fasciitis may be caused by repetitive strain or excessive stress on the plantar fascia, overuse from activities such as running, walking long distances, or standing for extended periods, obesity, high arches, flat feet, or tight calf muscles.
Ingrown Toenail
A common foot condition, an ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, swelling, and discomfort. Ingrown toenails can be caused by improper nail-trimming techniques, tight-fitting shoes, sustaining toe injuries, or even curved or unusually shaped toenails. Symptoms include redness, tenderness, and inflammation around the affected nail or even pus or drainage in severe cases. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can become infected, causing further pain and complications.
Bunions
A bunion is a bony, painful swelling that’s often formed on the first joint of the big toe. Bunions can be extremely painful due to the weight of your body resting on them each time you take a step. Everyday activities, such as walking and wearing shoes, can become painful with a bunion. Bunions can form due to general aging, genetic factors, complications with arthritis, or a weak foot structure.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan (historical fiction)
Summer Reading Suggestions
y friend, Amie, has the best taste in books. That is to say, I suppose that we have the same taste in books. Rarely has Amie recommended a book I didn’t absolutely love. As summer 2024 approaches, we’ll all — hopefully — have more time to indulge in a good read or two. Here are a few Aime and I have enjoyed.
When Amie recommended this one, she said, “You’ll never forget Pino Lella.” And she was right. The story follows a real-life hero, an Italian teenager turned reluctant resistance fighter. Author Mark Sullivan actually spent time with Pino toward the end of his life. He heard firsthand about the years he spent helping Jews escape over the Alps through the underground railroad and infiltrating Hitler’s ranks when he wasn’t much more than a boy.
The In-Between: Unforgettable Encounters During Life’s Final Moments by Hadley Vlahos (memoir)
Anyone who knows me knows I don’t do sad. No weepy books or movies for me, thank you very much. You’d think the memoir of a hospice nurse relating the final days of her patients’ lives wouldn’t be my cup of tea. On the contrary, Hadley’s book is filled with hope, joy, wisdom, faith, and stories of redemption as she meets her patients and works to make the end of their lives peaceful and beautiful.
The
Choice by
Gillian McAllister (fiction)
I was so excited after I read this one that I spoiled the experience for several people by revealing too much of the plot. Suffice it to say, this mystery/ thriller follows the choice a young woman makes and presents alternating timelines in which she did and didn’t make that choice, while neither she nor the reader knows which reality to believe. It’s thought-provoking and suspenseful.
American Sherlock: Murder, Forensics, and the Birth of American CSI by Kate Winkler Dawsey (nonfiction)
If you’re a true crime junkie, you may already know Kate Winkler Dawsey from her historic true-crime podcasts, Tenfold More Wicked and Buried Bones. In “American Sherlock,” Kate follows the career of Edward Oscar Heinrich, one of America’s greatest — and first — forensic scientists. Set in the 1930s, the story follows Heinrich as he solves over 2,000 cases in his 40-year career using techniques he was basically creating on the fly, many of which are still used today.
Herbal Remedies for Beginners by Katja Swift and Ryn Midura (nonfiction, instructional)
I first met Ryn and Katja through the Holistic Herbalism Podcast. As a brand-new herb enthusiast, I appreciated how approachable they made the topic. Successful herbalists, teachers, and cofounders of the CommonWealth Center for Holistic Herbalism, the two take a complex subject and (as my daddy liked to say) put the cookies on the bottom shelf. Their book includes 100 herbal remedies with simple herbs that are easy to access and step-bystep instructions on how to shop for, make, and apply herbal medicine that may address common problems such as headaches, colds, insect bites, tummy upsets, and more. (Note: Always check with your medical doctor before taking herbal supplements.)
Happy reading!

DERMATOLOGIST
WHY SMARTGRAFT IS A SMART CHOICE FOR TREATING HAIR LOSS
WHAT IS SMARTGRAFT?
about the expert
DR. ASHISH ARSHANAPALLI
UNITED DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES
Dr. Arshanapalli is a boardcertified dermatologist and a member of the first-ever class of board-certified Mohs surgeons. He enjoys all aspects of dermatology with a special focus on skin cancer and reconstruction. He also has a deep interest in hair loss and believes that with the proper treatments, hair restoration can greatly improve people’s self-esteem and quality of life. Dr. Arshanapalli graduated at the top of his class at the Indiana University School of Medicine, then conducted his residency in Dermatology at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He completed his training with a fellowship program in Mohs micrographic surgery and complex reconstruction at the University of Wisconsin.
SmartGraft is a great option for both men and women searching for a permanent solution to hair loss. Using the SmartGraft device, we gently extract individual hair grafts from the back and sides of a patient’s scalp. We then implant these grafts into the thinning areas to allow regrowth of thick, healthy, natural hair – with minimal appreciable scarring, no need to shave your whole hair, and minimal pain and down time.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
SmartGraft uses FUE (follicular unit extraction) technology to restore hair to areas of thinning. The SmartGraft FUE device works on a microscopic level, extracting one to four hair follicles at a time from a region of the scalp that has healthy and “bald resistant” hair (usually the back and sides of the head). We then implant these micro hair grafts into the targeted regions, producing the most natural, healthy results.
While your scalp is anesthetized, we use the SmartGraft device to gently remove the grafts from the donor area. These are sorted, counted and stored in a temperature-controlled and hydrated environment prior to implantation, which improves their ability to regrow for better results.
We then create tiny openings in the hair loss areas for the grafts to be implanted. This part of the procedure is very important as the angle, density and placement of each graft will determine how natural looking the results will be.
The full procedure usually takes around eight hours and is usually completed within a day.
WHAT KIND OF RECOVERY IS REQUIRED?
We’ll give patients complete instructions on what to expect following the procedure and how to care for the newly transplanted hair. Most patients can return to work the next day and resume full activity within a week.
HOW SOON WILL A PATIENT SEE RESULTS?
Visible changes happen quickly, with noticeable hair growth typically starting within three months and full growth within a year.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING SMARTGRAFT OVER OTHER HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS?
There are many! SmartGraft creates a completely healthy, natural look since we use the patient’s own hair to fill in areas of thinning. It’s also minimally invasive with little scarring since it doesn’t require large strips of hair to be removed and restored like traditional hair restoration surgeries. This also leads to quick healing and a fast return to normal activities. Recovery is short and patients are typically washing their hair within a few days. The procedure itself typically lasts around eight hours and is completed in a single, in-office visit.
IS SMARTGRAFT AVAILABLE FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN?
Yes. SmartGraft is a viable option for both men and women looking to restore their own real hair. SmartGraft is also safe to use on eyebrows, making it an ideal solution for women with thinning brows.

ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON
DON’T JUST LIVE WITH CHRONIC PAIN
I’M CONSIDERING SPINE SURGERY. HOW MUCH IMPROVEMENT CAN I TRULY EXPECT?
The decision to undergo any type of surgery should only come after careful discussion with a trusted surgeon and only after the two of you have exhausted all non-operative care options and you haven’t found relief. The surgeons at The AOA and Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital have consistently scored at the top of North Texas hospital systems for providing excellent cuttingedge care with the lowest complication rates. Keep in mind that, once surgery is complete, it’s up to you to perform all postoperative therapy as instructed by your surgeon to ensure optimal improvement and get you back as close to 100% as physically possible.
HOW MUCH DOWN TIME SHOULD I PLAN FOR?
That will depend upon the type of surgery you have scheduled. For instance, you shouldn’t return to driving until it’s safe for you and others on the road. Can you get safely in and out of your car? Are there necessary braces and slings that impede your ability to drive? You shouldn’t drive at all if you’re taking narcotics, muscle relaxers, or nerve medications. And you should have complete use of both arms and at least your right leg and be able to safely slam on the brakes in an emergency situation before you even consider driving. Returning to work is a more involved discussion with your surgeon, as some procedures may allow for return to work within three days, while others will need weeks or months to adequately recover.
HOW SOON SHOULD I START PHYSICAL THERAPY?
Therapy should start anywhere from the first few hours after a total joint replacement or spine surgery, to the fi rst few days after arthroscopic surgeries. In some instances, PT may be delayed for six weeks for certain fractures, joint reconstructions, or rotator cuff repairs. Therapy will last anywhere from a couple of sessions to several months, depending upon the extent of the surgery, formation of scar tissue, and how diligent you are about your prescribed daily exercises. The job of a physical therapists is to teach you the exercises you need to perform and to demonstrate how to perform them perfectly, so you feel confident doing them on your own at least twice every day.
WHAT ARE SOME NON-OPERATIVE THERAPIES I CAN TRY IF I DON’T WANT TO HAVE THE SURGERY?
Even the most experienced surgeon should only consider surgery until all non-surgical options have been exhausted including measures such as therapy, exercise, braces, appropriate medications, injections, activity optimizations, etc. Your orthopedic subspecialist or spine surgeon should be able to talk you through all your viable options and explain expectations of the different non-operative treatments and surgical options. These modalities not only allow those who don’t need surgery to successfully improve, but can also help those patients who need surgery be in a better physically and psychologically position before and after surgery to improve more optimally.

UROLOGIST
RELIEF FROM COMMON UROLOGICAL CONDITIONS
WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS DOES A UROLOGIST TREAT?
about the expert
KELLEY, DO
TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY
Dr. James Kelley is a urologist and urological surgeon, board certified by the American Board of Urology. He obtained his medical training from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and completed an internship and urologicalsurgery residency at the Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, West Virginia.
Urologists are surgeons who complete medical school followed by a fi ve to-six year residency to learn to treat diseases of the urinary system in men, women, and children, and conditions related to the male reproductive system. A urologist commonly treats kidney stones, cancers of the urinary system, bladder issues, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, male infertility, prostate problems, vasectomy, hormonal disorders, urinary tract infections, and more.
WHEN SHOULD I SEE A UROLOGIST?
There are many reasons to seek out care from a urologist. Do you ever leak urine? Do you urinate too frequently or too infrequently? Have you seen or been told you have blood in your urine? Are you waking at night to urinate? Do you have or suspect you have a kidney stone? Do you or your partner have diminished sex drive or erections? These can be embarrassing topics to discuss with a doctor, but they’re common questions any urologist fi eld. Better yet, they’re things a urologist can help with.
HOW MANY TRIPS TO THE BATHROOM IS NORMAL EACH DAY?
The average person urinates six to seven times a day. Of course, that number varies person to person. If you feel
you’re urinating too frequently, it may be an early sign of other underlying issues, such as an overactive bladder, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, enlarged prostate, or a more concerning problem such as bladder cancer. If you fi nd yourself rushing to the bathroom many times throughout the day or night, if you familiarize yourself with where the nearest bathrooms are at every store you visit, or if your bladder is limiting your daily life, it may be time to a visit a urologist, even if it’s just to put your mind at ease.
SOMETIMES I CAN’T MAKE IT TO THE BATHROOM IN TIME, OR I HAVE AN ACCIDENT WHEN I COUGH OR SNEEZE. IS THIS JUST A NORMAL PART OF GETTING OLDER?
Urinary incontinence can affect men as well as women. While urine leakage or urinary incontinence may become more common with age, it shouldn’t be considered “just part of getting older”. It can actually cause stress and embarrassment affecting your daily life. Whether you leak before you make it to the bathroom or leak when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise, it’s a condition that’s very treatable. Make an appointment with a urologist to talk about ways you can improve this condition. If you or someone you know is having issues like this, the good news is a urologist specializes in helping get these and other symptoms under control.

SPINAL SURGEON
THE VERY LATEST IN SPINE SURGERY
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEWER METHODS FOR PERFORMING SPINE SURGERY?
In the past ten years, spinal surgery has truly advanced with a push toward minimally invasive spinal procedures in which the portals for the incisions are much less destructive. During these procedures, the surgeon accesses the spine through a significantly smaller incision allowing for earlier recovery and mobilization, less bleeding, less tissue destruction, less risk of infection, less pain, and a more rapid recovery.
ARE THERE CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY THAT HAVE ALLOWED THIS LESS INVASIVE SURGERIES?
With its commitment to staying on the cutting edge of medical technology and know-how, BSW Arlington has invested in a million-dollar Globus Excelsius Robotic Navigation System. This advanced robotic platform allows surgeons to be even more accurate with spinal instrumentation thereby making spinal surgery more precise for our patients. It also allows a less invasive approach to the placement of spinal instruments. The robot synchronizes preoperative CT spans with live intraoperative imaging to allow for more accurate surgical precision and better patient outcomes.
WHAT KIND OF HELP CAN I REASONABLE EXPECT FOR MY SPINE CONDITION?
Spine surgery is all about improving your quality of life. The goal of any spine surgery performed at BSW Arlington is to treat and alleviate the underlying pathology that’s causing you pain and limiting your mobility with an emphasis on the smallest surgical intervention for the best benefit and patient outcome. The Globus Excelsius Robotic Navigation allows us to select small surgical options for maximum benefit to the patient. One common spinal pathology is instability of the
spine called Spondylolisthesis. The robot allows us to offer spine stabilizers in the effected segment of spine experiencing instability and decompresses the nerve structures causing the symptoms to decrease signifi cantly post-operatively.
AM I THE RIGHT AGE FOR SPINAL SURGERY?
There really aren’t age parameters for spinal surgery. But we practice a conservative approach, only recommending surgery after all conservative treatment options have been exhausted. Because physiological aging is different for everyone, there’s not a specific age when surgery is recommended or not recommended. Rather what matters is whether your problem is interfering with your quality of life and whether you’re medically able to undergo surgery.
WHAT HARM IS THERE IN WAITING TO HAVE SPINE SURGERY?
That depends upon the problem you’re experiencing. There are a few true spine emergencies when patients will be urged or required to undergo surgery. But for the most part, spinal surgeries are elective and aimed at improving or maintaining your quality of life. But if you’re experiencing neurologic deficits including sensory for motor, there’s a risk of permanent or worsening neurologic defi cits.
WHAT NEW TECHNOLOGY REALLY HAS YOU EXCITED?
Intraoperative imaging is allowing surgeons to access real-time modifications to surgical procedures. One such technology called Globus Excelsius is offering surgeons the advancement of minimally invasive technique to allow complex surgeries that otherwise would have been done through a large surgical procedure followed by a lengthy hospital stays. It can now be performed quicker with more precision and with better patient outcomes.

WALKING TOWARDS A PAIN-FREE FUTURE
WHEN
SHOULD
I SEE A PODIATRIST?
Many injuries will get better with rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, and activity modifi cation. But if you’re still experiencing pain or limitations even after these measures, it’s time to see a podiatrist. Podiatrists are experienced in problems and pathologies of the ankle as well as the foot including diabetic foot exams, fractures, heel pain, foot pain, ankle sprains, wounds, bunions, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, and more.
about the expert
MATTHEW MCCABE
DPM, MS, DABPM, FACFAS
WATER OAK FOOT AND ANKLE
Matthew McCabe completed his medical training and master’s in healthcare administration at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago. He completed his foot and ankle surgical residency at Christus Saint Patrick Hospital and the Center for Orthopaedics in Lake Charles, Louisiana and fellowship training at the Midwest Foot and Ankle Fellowship in Omaha, Nebraska.
WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM YOU SEE IN YOUR CLINIC?
Heel pain is more common than most people realize. It could be caused by several factors. Most often, it’s plantar fasciitis, but it could also be a stress fracture or tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). Basically, TTS is like carpal tunnel syndrome but in your ankle. All of these scenarios are easily treatable in-clinic. Other problems include bunions, hammer toes, and Achilles pain.
WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING A BUNION TREATED?
I recommend an evaluation at any point but when the bunion becomes painful you should see a podiatrist.
HOW IS A BUNION TREATED?
There are a few conservative measures you can take to help reduce the pain caused by a bunion. Unfortunately, there are no reliable, scientifically tested measures to prevent a bunion from forming or worsening. Some conservative
measures include, wider shoes, different shoes, padding, injections, and activity modifi cation. In general, conservative measures are taken to reduce symptoms. There are literally over 100 surgical procedures to correct a bunion. However, in recent years we have learned that a bunion is formed in three different planes and actually, is a deformity of a joint more in the midfoot rather than a deformity next to the big toe. The medial prominence by the big toe is simply the clinical manifestation of the joint deformity.
With older bunion procedures, up to 50% of bunions can return. With the new procedure called Lapiplasty, there’s a signifi cant reduction in the number of bunions that fall out of correction. The reason there’s a reduced reoccurrence of bunions with Lapiplasty is that the new procedure treats the deformity by correcting the cause of the deformity, not simply trimming the bump off of the protruding bone.
Another advantage of the new technique is that a patient can walk the day of surgery. The advancements in bunion correction technology have allowed for superior stability of the bunion correction. This is also another benefit that reduces the recurrence of bunion deformities.
Sometimes in the past, patients had a bunion procedure and the bunion deformity returned. This is because older procedures were not aimed at addressing the underlying cause of the bunion. Lapiplasty bunion correction can repair even bunion deformities that have returned. PODIATRY

WOMEN’S AND MEN’S HEALTH
HAVE YOU CONSIDERED BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT?
I’VE BEEN READING A LOT ABOUT BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES. CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW THEY WORK?
While traditional synthetic hormones must be metabolized through the liver and converted into a different hormone, sometimes causing the opposite of the desired effect, bioidentical hormones enter your body, go directly to the receptor site, and achieve what you need them to. This is because they look exactly like your naturally occurring hormones. They can be tailored to your individual needs and be administered through creams, patches, pills, or pellets.
WHY IS HORMONE IMBALANCE SUCH A PROBLEM FOR MEN AND WOMEN?
Hormonal imbalance can lead to any number of common health issues including fatigue, lack of energy, difficulty sleeping, irritability, anxiety, depression, reduced mental focus and memory, decreased muscle strength, joint pain, and reduced sexual desire and performance.
WHAT RESULTS HAVE YOU SEEN?
Thanks to bioidentical hormones, many of my patients are enjoying a balanced mood, improved sleep, reduced brain fog, decreased hot fl ashes, decreased vaginal dryness, increased stamina and energy, increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, increased libido, heart protection, bone protection, brain protection, and enhanced sexual response and desire thanks to bioidentical hormones.
HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT TO FEEL BETTER?
With pellet therapy, you should notice a larger difference around the four-tosix-week mark. Most patients notice a difference within seven to 10 days of starting a new therapy. Sometimes we need
to make adjustments to the treatment plan. I ask new patients to commit to two rounds of pellets to accommodate possible dosage adjustments before they’re feeling optimal. To achieve the best results it’s important to follow up with your practitioner for necessary blood work and consultation.
WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?
There are many variables, so hormone therapy isn’t one-size-fits all. Four to six weeks after starting therapy, we’ll want to obtain initial lab testing, then test periodically after that. But you shouldn’t require “labs” again for another year unless we’re adjusting your dose. The average price of pellet therapy for women is $350 every three to fi ve months. For men it ranges from $650 to $750 every four to six months. Just because you age, doesn’t mean you should feel less than. Bioidentical hormones replicate the hormones you lose as you age, for a healthier, happier life.
WHAT ABOUT THYROID MANAGEMENT?
Thyroid function is involved in multiple aspects of your health including metabolism, temperature regulation, mood, and cardiac function. That’s why it’s important to find a provider who will evaluate the whole picture is imperative. Unfortunately, most primary care providers only look at your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which doesn’t give the full picture of your thyroid status. It’s important to look at the Free T3 and Free T4 as well as looking at antibodies against the thyroid to determine if the patient has any autoimmune dysfunction causing a thyroid problem. Often, a patient with low thyroid symptoms, will have labs that appear normal. That’s why it’s important to follow up with additional testing such as looking at a reverse T3.

COSMETIC
DENTIST
ACHIEVE THE SMILE YOU WANT WITH COSMETIC DENTISTRY
SINCE I WAS A CHILD, I’VE BEEN TERRIFIED OF THE DENTIST. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
Dental anxiety is common. You’re defi nitely not alone. Nitrous oxide helps many of my patients take the edge off. It offers a pleasant level of sedation, within 30 seconds to four minutes, and often a numb feeling in your cheeks and gums. After the gas is adjusted to the appropriate dose, and you’re relaxed and sedated, I can comfortably administer an anesthetic injection, if you require one. After treatment is completed, I’ll administer pure oxygen for you to breathe for about fi ve minutes, during which all the effects of sedation will be reversed. Another option is sedation dentistry. Under sedation most patients feel no discomfort and afterwards have little to no memory of their visit.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PORCELAIN VENEERS TO IMPROVE MY SMILE?
If you want to correct gaps between your teeth, stains, or badly shaped or crooked teeth, veneers are a great option for helping you achieve the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. Porcelain veneers are basically thin shells of ceramic that bond directly to the front and top surfaces of your teeth. Once there, they perfectly mimic your natural teeth—only better. Veneers have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity and versatility.
ARE YOU SURE THEY’LL LOOK LIKE MY NATURAL TEETH?
Absolutely, when bonded to your teeth, the ultra-thin porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable. They’re also highly resistant to coffee, tea, or even cigarette stains. Because they’re thin,
light can shine through them and they take on the natural color of the underlying tooth. For strength and appearance, their resemblance to healthy, white tooth enamel is unsurpassed by other restorative options. With proper care, porcelain veneers will brighten your smile for well over a decade.
I’M CONSIDERING DENTAL IMPLANTS FOR A COUPLE TEETH THAT ARE BEYOND HOPE.IS THAT A GOOD OPTION?
Dental implants are tiny titanium posts placed into your jawbone wherever teeth are missing. Once there, they provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. Implants give you the ability to eat virtually anything and to smile with confi dence, knowing your teeth appear natural and your facial contours are preserved. Your natural bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artifi cial teeth. Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
WHAT IS THE IMPLANT PROCESS?
For most patients, the placement of dental implants will involve two surgical procedures. During the fi rst procedure, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone and you should be able to wear a temporary tooth or teeth and eat a soft diet. After the implant has integrated into the bone, a permanent restoration is made. The entire procedure takes from two to four months and most patients don’t experience any disruption to their life.

GENERAL SURGEON
THE NEXT GENERATION OF GENERAL SURGERY
WHAT KINDS OF ADVANCEMENTS HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR TWO DECADES AS A SURGEON?
Surgery has always had a glorious tradition of innovation and physicians who push the boundaries of the profession and advance the science. But advancements, over the past 20 years, are nothing short of miraculous. Operations that used to require large incisions and weeks of recovery are now done successfully through small, barely noticeable incisions. As communication and interconnectivity have advanced in every field, the availability and the expression of new ideas in medicine has changed the face of surgery forever. We’re no longer limited to a few textbooks but have unimaginatively vast resources of ideas. Surgeons around the world can talk to each other instantaneously and share their experiences and innovations. I can’t wait to witness the next 20 years of advancements.
WHY ARE YOU SUCH AN ADVOCATE OF ROBOTIC SURGERY?
Robotic surgery in its simplest sense is the marriage of the human brain and experience with today’s technological advances. Robotics allows our eyes to see with clarity and magnification anatomy that we could not previously see at all. Robotics allows our hands to move instruments with gentle precision in places where our hands could not previously reach. The benefi ts of this visualization and precision has proven to be fewer complications, less blood loss, less risk of infection, smaller scarring, less downtime for the patient, and markedly faster recovery.
I NEED REFLUX SURGERY. WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?
Imagine a time when you don’t have to live your life around heartburn.
Imagine being able to enjoy a cup of coffee or share a meal with friends without having to worry about the misery to follow. Surgery can offer just that. Reflux and heartburn are often very fixable conditions. Reflux surgery has fantastic results allowing patients to stop taking antacids. There are several surgery options, all of which include fast recovery and resolution of heartburn symptoms. Get ready to enjoy food again!
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME AFTER SURGERY?
That will greatly depend on the surgery you have. However, a reasonable expectation after most minimally invasive procedures, would be major recovery between three to five days with full recovery in four to six weeks. That’s remarkably better than it used to be.
WILL I HAVE A SURGERY SCAR?
Even with all our advancements, scarless surgery isn’t yet possible. Most, if not all, operations require an incision that needs to heal. The good news is that, with modern technology, scars are becoming fewer and much, much smaller every day. Additional technologies can help incisions fade to the point where they’re nearly invisible.
WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO A PATIENT BEFORE THEY SEE A SURGEON?
Take your time. Do your research. People spend more time reading reviews for products on Amazon or restaurant reviews than they do vetting a surgeon. Go to your initial consultation with a prepared list of questions. If you don’t understand the answer, ask until you do. Remember you’re the customer.

MICHAEL L. THORNTON DO, FACOS
MANSFIELD COSMETIC SURGERY CENTER
Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center was established in 2008 under the surgical directorship of Dr. Michael L. Thornton, a fellowship-trained, double board-certified Cosmetic Surgeon, and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr Thornton is highly specialized in providing various procedures in facial plastic surgery, cosmetic breast surgery, body contouring surgery and liposuction, post-bariatric after weight loss surgery, and non-surgical aesthetic skin rejuvenation from his medical spa.
COSMETIC SURGEON
IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER RIGHT FOR ME?
WHAT IS A “MOMMY MAKEOVER”?
A “Mommy Makeover” is a customized combination of cosmetic surgical procedures aimed at restoring and enhancing a woman’s post-pregnancy body. It focuses on improving the appearance of the breasts and abdomen, addressing the physical changes that occur after childbirth.
WHAT COSMETIC SURGICAL PROCEDURES ARE PERFORMED DURING A MOMMY MAKEOVER?
A mommy makeover commonly includes procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), mini tummy tuck, breast augmentation with or without a breast lift (mastopexy), breast reduction, and buttock fat grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift). These procedures are often performed simultaneously during a single operation, allowing for one comprehensive recovery period.
HOW DOES A MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURE IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF MY TUMMY?
A tummy tuck addresses the entire abdominal area, but primarily focusing on the muscles, skin, and fat. During the procedure, an incision is made just above the lower pubic area, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and excess skin is removed. This helps to eliminate loose or sagging skin, reduce stretch marks, and create a fl atter, fi rmer abdominal contour. Liposuction may also be used to remove stubborn fat pockets from the abdomen, fl anks, and back.
WHAT BREAST ENHANCEMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE WITH A MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURE?
Breast enhancement is a key focus of many mommy makeovers, as breastfeeding can leave some mothers with sagging breasts. A breast lift (mastopexy) is often performed to create more uplifted and youthfullooking breasts. For those needing
increased volume, breast augmentation with either saline or silicone implants can restore the additional need for breast volume. In some cases, a breast lift is combined with breast augmentation to address both sagging and volume loss during one procedure.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME FOLLOWING A MOMMY MAKEOVER?
The recovery time following a Mommy Makeover can vary based on the complexity of the specific procedures performed, the patient’s overall health condition, and adherence to following post-operative care instructions. In general, patients need 10 to 14 days to resume minimal activities, while full recovery can be expected within 4 to 6 months. Always consult with your surgeon if you have any concerns or questions during the recovery process.
IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER RIGHT FOR ME?
If you are considering a Mommy Makeover, there are several important factors to keep in mind. First, while the results of a mommy makeover are designed to be long-lasting, future pregnancies can impact the outcomes. Therefore, it is advisable to complete your family planning before undergoing these procedures. Additionally, it is important to reach your ideal weight before considering cosmetic surgery, as liposuction and tummy tucks are not substitutes for natural postpartum weight loss. Furthermore, for those interested in breast cosmetic surgery following pregnancy, it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding several months prior to the procedure. This allows your breasts to settle into their natural volume, ensuring optimal results. Consulting with a qualified and board-certified cosmetic surgeon who specializes in mommy makeovers is essential. They can help you discuss your goals and determine the most appropriate approach to achieve the desired results, ensuring a safe and satisfying experience.

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
THE FUTURE OF HEART SURGERY
HOW IS A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON DIFFERENT FROM A CARDIOLOGIST?
A cardiothoracic surgeon completes medical school just like a cardiologist then completes an additional five years in surgery residency and two to three year in a cardiothoracic-surgery residency program. Or they may complete a sixyear integrated cardiothoracic-surgery residency and can also complete additional training in a subspecialized area. A cardiothoracic surgeon is a medical doctor trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the chest, esophagus, diaphragm, heart, lungs, and trachea and to address more aggressive treatment such as bypass surgery and surgical-valve replacement procedures. A cardiologist will generally follow-up with the patient once I’ve released them. Some procedures—such as percutaneous valve replacement—may involve both specialists.
So, while cardiothoracic surgeon and cardiologists play equally important roles in the care of a patient with heart disease, cardiologists generally handle diagnosis and medical treatment of heart conditions. They may also perform nonsurgical procedures such as balloon angioplasty, coronary stents, ablation procedures, or placement of devices such as pacemakers or defi brillators.
ARE THERE OTHER PROCEDURES YOU PERFORM AS A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON?
Over the past three decades, I’ve performed thousands of angioplasties to restore healthy blood flow to the heart, stent placement to open up narrow heart arteries, ablations to treat abnormal heart rates and rhythms, implantations of pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators to correct abnormal heart rhythms and help hearts beat more effi ciently, openheart surgery to treat heart blockages in the coronary arteries or correct problems or defects, coronary artery bypass grafting to bypass a coronary artery that’s narrowed or blocked, heart valve
repair or replacement for damaged or diseased valves, ventricular assist devices to treat heart failure, and carotid surgery to remove plaque in a carotid artery.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THESE PROCEDURES?
Cardiothoracic surgeries are generally intended to help open coronary arteries narrowed by fatty plaque buildup, repair weakened heart muscle or defects, or correct heart-rhythm problems. Because each patient is unique, I work cooperatively with primary-care physicians, cardiologists, or other healthcare providers to offer highly tailored treatment. With new minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgeries success rates of these procedures are greatly improved and the risk factors greatly reduced. After surgery, we’re seeing patients return to enjoying a long, vibrant life.
HOW HAS YOUR FIELD ADVANCE, DURING YOUR THREE DECADES AS A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON?
The field has grown by leaps and bounds including video and robot-assisted surgery of the chest, heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, and trachea, less-invasive procedures which mean shorter recovery time, less risk of infection, negligible scarring, reduced recovery time, less blood loss, less pain, fewer complications, and far greater success rates. I’ve also had the privilege of pioneering a new mechanical heart valve requiring less anticoagulation and minimallyinvasive Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) which allows me to access hard-to-reach areas of the lung, aiding in the diagnosis of lung disease and leading to earlier, personalized treatment, potentially saving lives. I feel blessed to have played a part in pioneering many minimally invasive thoracic-surgery techniques and technologies, over the past 30 years.

PAIN MANAGEMENT
GETTING YOU BACK TO THE LIFE YOU ENJOY
WHAT IS AN INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MEDICINE SPECIALIST?
A Pain Medicine Specialist is a physician who is specifically trained to perform a comprehensive assessment of the origin of a new or chronic pain complaint and design a multidisciplinary approach to treating the pain complaint while addressing the underlying cause if possible. An Interventional Pain Medicine Specialist additionally incorporates advanced procedural techniques such as injections and implanting devices to help facilitate pain relief.
Pain Medicine was not established for the explicit purpose of prescribing opioid pain medications. Opioid pain medications do have their role, but they are not recommended as the primary treatment in most painful conditions.
WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS SHOULD I EXPECT?
about the expert
INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MANAGEMENT REGENCY PAIN & THERAPY INSTITUTE
Dr. Damian Sacky is double Board Certified in Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R). As an interventional pain management specialist with Regency, Dr. Sacky treats acute, sub-acute and chronic pain conditions and believes the goal of pain management is to provide relief, improve function, and restore quality of life for patients suffering from pain. He is currently accepting new patients.
HOW ARE PAIN MEDICINE SPECIALISTS TRAINED?
Pain Medicine Specialists can come from a variety of different primary training backgrounds such as Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), Family Medicine, Neurology, or Psychiatry. My primary training is in PM&R with subspecialty training in Pain Medicine. As a PM&R trained Pain Medicine physician, I can evaluate and treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL FIRST APPOINTMENT LIKE?
During the initial appointment you will have a comprehensive assessment that includes listening to the physical complaints and limitations, having a physical examination, a review of current treatments, review of imaging studies and other diagnostic tests or ordering of new tests. These actions are necessary to establish a diagnosis. From that an individualized treatment plan can be developed.
I DON’T WANT TO TAKE MEDICINES FOR PAIN, WHY SHOULD I SEE A PAIN MEDICINE SPECIALIST?
Contrary to popular belief by patients and healthcare providers, the field of
A patient’s individualized treatment plan can include, but is not limited to, a combination of the following: exercise recommendations, physical therapy, injections/procedures, bracing, and nonopioid analgesics. Other disciplines are also considered such as occupational therapy, psychotherapy, acupuncture, and manual medicine. Our training also allows us to determine if a referral to a specialist is needed such as a Neurologist. This also includes the knowledge to know when a surgical consultation is warranted over a non-surgical treatment approach for certain conditions.
HOW CAN I BE PREPARED FOR MY INITIAL APPOINTMENT?
Unfortunately, the burden of paperwork still exists in healthcare. Arriving 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time is recommended as this allows for the completion of paperwork, obtaining vital signs, and other tasks to be completed prior to being seen. I respect the value of your time and plan on entering the exam room at your scheduled appointment time.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL INTERESTS?
Some Pain Medicine Specialists concentrate upon specific areas such as Pediatric Pain or Cancer Pain. I have a special interest in Spine and Musculoskeletal/ Orthopedic medicine with a focus on interventional procedures.

NEUROSURGEON
TOP NEUROSURGEON TALKS MAJOR PAIN IN THE NECK...AND BACK
THE PAIN IN MY NECK IS INTERFERING WITH MY DAILY LIFE. COULD IT BE CERVICAL MYELOPATHY?
Cervical Myelopathy is a condition that goes beyond a simple morning-time crick in your neck. Chronic neck pain can make daily life challenging and reduce your overall quality of life. The vertebrae of our cervical spine are vulnerable, with four separate joints in each vertebra that help them move (two facet joints and two unconvertable joints). The intervertebral discs provide cushioning between these vertebrae. Ligaments and tendons provide stability to the spinal column.
As we age, our intervertebral discs naturally begin to fl atten and lose their supportive bounce. Ligaments loosen and lengthen and may struggle to recover from overuse, strain, or injury. Cervical myelopathy (also called cervical spondylotic myelopathy or spinal cord compression) is compression of the spinal cord in the neck due to this wear and tear that occurs as we age.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS?
The compression that causes Cervical Myelopathy can lead to symptoms that include difficulty grasping objects, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hands and arms, diffi culty walking (not dizziness but an inability to coordinate the body), stiffness in the neck, and fewer fi ne motor skills. As the condition progresses, pain may radiate down the arms, across the shoulders, and into the upper back.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP ME?
We always begin with the least invasive treatments such as diet, exercise, and physical therapy before considering surgery. Many patients experience pain relief and increased mobility with these
non-invasive treatments. Once all nonsurgical options have been explored, there are a number of surgical approaches to Cervical Myelopathy. These include spinal fusion, spinal-cord compression surgery, and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. There’s no need for you to suffer. We’ll partner with you to find the treatment that provides the highest standard of pain relief, today and going forward.
I SUSPECT I MIGHT BE SUFFERING FROM SCIATICA. HOW CAN I BE SURE?
Many people who suffer from back pain refer to their pain as sciatica. However, sciatica is actually a specific type of back and leg pain that can be incorrectly labeled as the root cause of back pain. Sciatica is defined by a very specific set of symptoms. The most common symptoms are weakness, numbness in the leg or foot, “pins and needles” anywhere along the nerve path, burning pain, stabbing pain that worsens when you sneeze or cough, shooting pain that makes prolonged sitting or standing impossible, and radiating pain that originates from the lumbar spine. And you’ll typically only feel sciatica symptoms on one side of your body.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Again, we want to begin with lifestyle changes such as exercise, smoking secession, and dietary interventions. Only after we’ve exhausted these nonsurgical options would we discuss surgical intervention such as spinalcord decompression, posterior lumbar interbody fusion, or lumbar laminectomy with nerve root decompression. Sciatica pain can be debilitating, creating painful challenges in everyday life. But there is much a qualified neurosurgery can do to help you fi nd relief.

ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE AND LIFE TO YOUR YEARS
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC DIFFER FROM CONVENTIONAL MEDICINE?
Like conventional medicine, chiropractic is based upon scientific principles of diagnosis through testing and empirical observations. Treatment is based upon the practitioner’s rigorous training and clinical experience. Unlike conventional medicine, which focuses on attempting to treat disease once it occurs, chiropractic attempts to improve the health of the individual in an effort to avoid illness in the first place. Also, chiropractors are the only professionals trained to diagnose and treat spinal subluxations.
WHAT IS A SPINAL SUBLUXATION?
BACK 2 WELLNESS CHIROPRACTIC
After completing his bachelors and master’s degree, Dr. Banks earned his doctorate in chiropractic and post graduate certification in brain traumatology and whiplash injuries from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego. When not on the job, he enjoys working out, spending time with his family, and volunteering as a YMCA coach.
The word ‘subluxation’ comes from the Latin words meaning ‘to dislocate’ (luxare) and ‘somewhat or slightly’ (sub). So the term ‘vertebral subluxation’ literally means a slight dislocation (misalignment) of the bones in the spine. Today the word ‘subluxation’ has changed in meaning to capture the complex of neurological, structural, and functional changes that occur when a bone is ‘out of place.’ Chiropractors usually refer to subluxations of the spine as the “Vertebral Subluxation Complex”, or “VSC” for short.
WHAT KINDS OF CONDITIONS CAN BE HELPED THROUGH CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT?
Chiropractic care is effective for a wide variety of conditions, not just back pain. It offers a drug-free alternative to pain management, improved mobility, and enhanced function for conditions ranging from asthma to PMS and headaches to carpal tunnel. Chiropractic care is also very important for injury recovery and rehabilitation, following auto accidents, falls, and other personal injuries. It’s also
helpful in finding relief from repetitive use injuries and even respiratory function.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
From infants to older adults, children, athletes, men, and women, chiropractic care is appropriate for almost anyone. Chiropractic can help seniors remain active and prevent falls which are a big issue for older people. A chiropractor can assess their posture and gait, and use spinal manipulation to improve their musculoskeletal alignment and balance. People of any age who spend a lot of time working on a computer can benefit from chiropractic care. In addition to adjusting your spine, a chiropractor can advise you on ergonomic work stations and exercises to decrease back or neck pain, headaches or eye strain, and prevent future problems. Regular chiropractic care during childhood may head off problems that many adults experience later in life. And athletes—both professional and recreational—should make chiropractic a routine part of their lives.
YOU’RE KNOWN FOR SPENDING A LOT OF TIME WITH YOUR PATIENTS. WHY IS THAT SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Chiropractic is so much more than simply a means of relieving pain. The chiropractic approach is holistic, addressing your overall health. Many lifestyle factors impact your health such as exercise, diet, rest, stress, and environment. For this reason, I like to talk to my patients about changes they can make for optimum wellness. The goal of the chiropractic treatment is to restore the body to its natural state of optimal health. As a chiropractor, I want to do everything humanly possible to make my patients feel better and allow them to live life to the fullest.

NOURISH YOUR BODY, MIND, AND SOUL
HOW DO SAUNA USE AND COLD-PLUNGE THERAPY CONTRIBUTE TO OVERALL WELLNESS?
Sauna use and cold plunge therapy offer contrasting yet complementary benefits for health and wellness. Saunas, through their heat, help in detoxifying the body by encouraging sweating, thereby flushing out toxins. They also improve cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate similar to moderate exercise and can relieve stress by promoting relaxation.
Cold plunge therapy, on the other hand, exposes the body to extremely cold temperatures for short periods. This shock to the system can boost the immune system, reduce infl ammation and muscle soreness, improve recovery and physical performance, and increase endorphin levels, leading to an improved mood and enhanced resilience to stress.
WHAT IS CONTRAST THERAPY?
Contrast therapy is a series of brief, repeated exposure to warm and cold temperatures alternating between the hot sauna and cold-plunge therapy to further enhance the benefi ts, improving circulation, reducing muscle soreness, and speeding up recovery times for athletes. The therapy began in Finland where people leave the hot sauna and roll in the snow, return to the sauna and repeat the process.
WHAT IS BRAINTAP AND HOW DOES IT PROMOTE MENTAL CLARITY AND RELAXATION?
Brain Tap is a wellness technology designed to balance brain wave activity, thereby reducing stress and promoting mental clarity using a combination of neuroalgorithmic patterns, light, and sound therapies. This innovative approach helps synchronize the brain’s hemispheres, fostering a sense of calm and focus.
Through guided meditation enhanced by visual and auditory stimulation, Brain Tap effectively helps individuals
enter a profound state of relaxation and mindfulness. This can lead to improved sleep patterns, reduced anxiety, enhanced cognitive functions, and a better overall mood. The technology targets the brain’s natural frequencies, encouraging a shift from the stress-inducing beta waves to the relaxed states of alpha and theta waves, optimizing relaxation and mental performance. This technology works great for anxiety, depression, focus, and ADHD.
HOW CAN PEMF THERAPY AID IN RECOVERY AND IMPROVE HEALTH?
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Mat therapy (PEMF) uses electromagnetic fi elds to encourage the body’s natural recovery process. By emitting low-level electromagnetic waves that mimic the Earth’s natural frequencies, PEMF mats stimulate cellular recovery, promote blood circulation, and support the body’s innate healing mechanisms.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF THIS TYPE OF THERAPY?
The benefits of PEMF Therapy are many and include:
• Reducing inflammation and pain, making it particularly beneficial for those with chronic conditions or injuries
• Stimulating and enhancing the repair of muscle tissue and bones
• Supporting improved energy levels and overall vitality by enhancing the mitochondrial function, which is crucial for energy production in cells
• Facilitating joint movement and stability improvement
PEMF therapy is non-invasive and has been studied for its effectiveness in various contexts, from accelerating bone healing to improving symptoms of depression. It offers a holistic tool for individuals seeking to maintain their wellness, recover from physical exertion, or manage chronic conditions.

INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL PLANNING
PROTECTING WHAT MEANS THE MOST TO YOU
I’VE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH MY CAR INSURANCE THROUGH STATE FARM, BUT I RECENTLY BOUGHT A RATHER EXPENSIVE KAYAK. YOU DON’T INSURE THOSE, DO YOU?
HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE REASSESS THAT COVERAGE?
about the expert
AL CLARK
STATE FARM INSURANCE
Al Clark is a national awardwinning insurance agent and experienced financial advisor. For 45 years, Al has built one of the most successful State Farm Insurance and Financial Service offices in the country as he has helped his Tarrant County neighbors protect their families and possessions and realize their financial dreams.
Would you believe we do? There are many ways to get from Point A to Point B and State Farm is happy to insure your jet skis, trail bikes, truck campers, golf carts, and kayaks. We understand these items can represent a big investment and State Farm has you covered—whatever you drive—in more ways than one. We offer great savings options and attentive service. Plus, your coverage can be personalized, to include things like Emergency Roadside Service (ERS) coverage and car rental insurance. I’ve been in the insurance industry for 45 years. State Farm is the gold standard for customer service and stellar coverage. That’s why I opted to exclusively be a State Farm Insurance and Financial Services agent. And I’ve never looked back.
MY HUSBAND AND I RECENTLY BOUGHT OUR FIRST HOME. AMERICAN DREAM, HERE WE COME. HOW DO WE KNOW HOW MUCH INSURANCE IS ENOUGH?
Congratulations, that’s an exciting step. Homeownership is a lot of responsibility. It’s important to make sure your home and the possessions within are protected in the event of unexpected damage or catastrophe. You also want to have liability insurance in case someone stumbles and falls on your property. It’s time to sit down with an experienced insurance agent and let them advise you on the best coverage for you.
Many people purchase homeowners insurance or renters insurance when they fi rst move into their new home then pay little attention to their policy after that. That’s a mistake because over time, as you make renovations, purchase new items, or replace existing appliances, you may be leaving gaps in your coverage. It’s wise to sit down annually with your insurance agent to review your coverage. During that meeting, ask about discounts, review home renovations, discuss landscaping changes, share any changes in the appliances, and confi rm that your home is insured for the estimated cost to rebuild. And if you combine your home and auto insurance, consider reviewing your auto coverage at the same time.
WHAT’S THE BEST AGE TO RETIRE?
The answer is different for everyone. My goal early in life was to plan my fi nances so I could retire comfortably by the time I was 55. Through saving, budgeting, and investing, I did achieve that goal. Then I realized I enjoy working on my business, working with people, and making a difference in their lives. Like me, not all of my clients want to retire at 65. But it’s my job to help them get to the point where they can if they want to. An experienced financial advisor can help you sort through all the factors that go into making a wise decision about when to retire. You’re never too young to partner with that advisor and begin preparations for the retirement you want—whenever that is.

BARIATRIC SURGEON
JUMPSTART YOUR WELLNESS JOURNEY
WHAT CAN BARIATRIC SURGERY DO FOR ME?
Weight loss surgery can jumpstart a life that’s healthier. It can improve your relationship, self-esteem, job performance, health, and happiness and can extend your time on Earth. Losing excess weight through weight-loss surgery is about starting a healthier, safer, more fulfi lling life. For most patients, it also mean saying “good-bye” to obesityrelated conditions such as sleep apnea, hypertension, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, depression, degenerative joint disease, and more. For years, these conditions have negatively affected and limited their lives and lowered their life expectancy.
WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS WHEN CONSIDERING WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?
Every day around this country, bariatric doctors are having amazing success initiating safe weight loss with the help of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, duodenal switch, intragastric balloons (IGB), endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), and revision surgeries robotic. At Surgical Associates of Mansfield, we perform these procedures with the help of a state-of-theart da Vinci robotic surgical system which allows these life-saving surgeries to be performed with very small incisions, fewer wound complications, less pain, faster and easier recovery, and superior outcomes.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ONE OF THESE PROCEDURES?
Some of the things we’ll consider during your initial consultation is whether you are at an unhealthy weight for your height and age. We’ll talk to you about other things you’ve tried unsuccessfully such as diets, workouts, and medications. Statistically, diets, pills, shakes, and fad diets have only a 5% success rate. The rate of success for bariatric surgery is routinely 90%. An experienced bariatric surgery will consider your age, weight-loss goals, and any other medical problems before recommending a weight-loss procedure for you.
HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN I EXPECT TO LOSE?
That will depend on your weight-loss goal and how willing you are to partner with us and make the lifestyle changes necessary to lose weight safely—and keep it off. While each patient is unique, our bariatric patients lose on average between 35 and100 pounds. And more importantly, most maintain their weight loss.
ARE THERE RISKS TO WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?
There are risks with any surgery. But the risks of living with obesity are far greater. The most important thing is to have a skilled and reputable surgeon with multiple weight-loss surgeries under their belt who can successfully address any risks that may arise in a healthy and safe way. (Very rarely do complications arise.)
I’M PREGNANT. DO I NEED TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE BABY IS BORN TO HAVE WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?
Obesity-related problems during pregnancy are many and include gestational diabetes, blood pressure disorders, newborns who are large for their gestational ages, postpartum hemorrhage, and cesarean delivery. Research suggests that weight-loss surgery before pregnancy can lower these and other health risks to women and their babies. It is, however, recommended that you wait two years after bariatric surgery to become pregnant. Your OB-Gyn should perform nutritional deficiency testing before conception to determine your individual need for supplements, as well as monthly tests during pregnancy. But many women deliver healthy babies after bariatric surgery. Texas law prohibits hospitals from practicing medicine. This practice is owned and operated by MedHealth/ Methodist Medical Group and staffed by independently practicing physicians who are employees of MedHealth/ Methodist Medical Group. CAITLIN TESCH, LCSW-S
CONNECTIONS WELLNESS GROUP
Caitlin Tesch, LCSW-S, is a passionate social worker with eight years of experience in private practice, PHP/IOP, and residential settings. She primarily works with adolescents experiencing symptoms related to depression, anxiety, selfharm, suicidal ideation, ADHD, unstable mood, and irritability.
COUNSELOR/THERAPIST
CHANGING THE NARRATIVE AROUND MENTAL HEALTH
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS YOU’RE STILL SEEING BECAUSE OF THE COVID YEAR?
We’re seeing more social anxiety in kids leading to school truancy. This is very much related to the impacts of the COVID shutdown and kids doing school online for a time and then having to reintegrate into an in-person setting. It’s been challenging for some kids. They’re experiencing increased anxiety and depression as they try to “belong” back in that environment. For many, the response has been just not going to school.
WHY NOT SIMPLY RETURN TO ONLINE SCHOOLING, IF IN-PERSON IS SO STRESSFUL FOR THEM?
That depends on the child. We do recommend an online option for some kids who learn better in an independent setting and with a self-paced model. But others are using it to avoid social interaction. In those situations, we encourage intensive outpatient (IOP) or partial hospitalization (PHP) where they’re with us all day but return home at night. The smaller setting can help them transition back into their usual school environment. One good thing COVID left us with is differing versions of homeschooling, including hybrid options where some of the schooling is in person and some is online. It also depends on how far behind they got while they were truant, but most will be able to catch up easily enough.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GROUP THERAPY?
A group setting is impactful, especially for adolescents. Being surrounded by people who are experiencing the same things they are removes the stigma which
may have been preventing them from getting help. Once they’re in a group with others around their own age, they’re able to receive feedback from people who are in the same stage of life as they are. While the therapist is there to lead the conversation, participants often take to heart what their peers say more than what an adult might say.
HOW DO KIDS STAY ON TRACK WITH SCHOOL WHILE IN YOUR IOP OR PHP PROGRAM?
Parents worry their kids will fall behind in school. Sometimes we have to have difficult conversations to help them realize, while education is important, we need to focus on their child’s emotions right now. That can be hard for parents to understand at first. We’re still actively changing the narrative around mental health.
Connections Wellness Group has an accredited school program through Cognia for all active patients, which is unique for an outpatient mental health facility. Patients have the option of enrolling in our accredited school and completing our curriculum, or they can stay enrolled in their school and bring their schoolwork to complete on our campus during the day.
WHAT ABOUT STUDENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY FALLEN BEHIND?
With the one-on-one attention we can give, they usually have no problem catching up. But we’re offering a summer school course for credit recovery for patients who’ve fallen behind in school. They will be able to use the summer months to make up the credits they missed while they were truant.

THE TRANSFORMATIVE ESSENCE OF QI GONG
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Life is hectic. Despite the myriad of technological innovations designed to simplify our lives, it’s still common to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed out. It’s no wonder that an increasing number of people are turning to activities like yoga and Tai Chi in search of better health and peace of mind. But there’s an additional time-honored practice worth exploring called Qi Gong (pronounced chee gung).
Accessible to individuals of almost every age and physical condition, Qi Gong incorporates a comprehensive approach to self-awareness through coordinated body positions, intentional breathing, and slow, mindful movements. While it
52 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2024 wellness
Qi Gong not only contributes to physical health and stress reduction but also promotes mental clarity, boosts energy levels, and fosters a greater sense of overall well-being.
may resemble Tai Chi at fi rst glance, Qi Gong generally involves gentler and less complex movements, making it simpler to learn and integrate into your daily life.
HARNESSING YOUR LIFE ENERGY
At the heart of Qi Gong is the belief in Qi (or Chi), a vital life force that flows through pathways known as meridians, vitalizing all living things. This concept, dating back millennia to ancient China, posits that a harmonious flow of Qi sustains health and vitality, while disturbances or obstructions can lead to ill health. Through focused attention, gentle movements, and regulated breathing, Qi Gong encourages the beneficial flow of Qi, aiding in balance and vitality and alleviating stress. It also offers a chance to pause and reconnect with one’s inner self.
GETTING STARTED IS SIMPLE
Qi Gong’s adaptability makes it a convenient and flexible option for mindbody exercise, practicable in almost any setting. For those preferring in-person instruction, a quick online search can reveal local Qi Gong sessions. Many studios that offer Tai Chi and yoga now also provide Qi Gong classes.
The online community for Qi Gong is thriving, with a wide array of classes available at various levels from numerous instructors, including many free video classes. Beginners can sample different videos to fi nd the styles and teachers that resonate most with them. For instance, Qi Gong Master Lee Holden provides a free two-week trial with fi ve complimentary classes on Holden Qigong, while Jeffery Chand has a free seven-minute beginner routine
to stimulate Qi. Kseny Gray offers a broad selection of free YouTube classes, and her membership program includes live-streamed sessions.
My spouse and I discovered that starting our day with 10-minute Qi Gong sessions every other day was an ideal introduction. We were amazed at how quickly we began to feel more vibrant and noted a signifi cant improvement in our balance and energy levels. As we became more adept at the forms and breathing techniques, we increased our practice to daily morning sessions and added a more extended routine in the early evening. The positive impact has been so profound that we’re thinking about attending a week-long Qi Gong retreat.

DOWN TO detox
YOGA, SAUNA, FOODS, AND MORE
BY AUDREY SELLERS
Detoxing your body is like pressing a reset button — you clear away the bad stuff, such as accumulated toxins and pollutants, and provide a clean slate for your body to function optimally. Don’t want to down a bunch of supplements or mix up some herbal concoctions? You don’t have to. There are many ways to detox safely and effectively, and they don’t all require guzzling green juices or going on 20-hour fasts. Check out a few ideas below:
Do some yoga. Light a candle, roll out your mat, and embrace the detoxifying power of yoga. With all the twists and inversions,
54 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2024 wellness
the practice helps improve circulation, stimulate digestion, and flush out toxins through sweat. When you breathe deeply, you also get more oxygen to your cells, contributing to brighter, healthier skin.
Sweat it out in a sauna session. Book an appointment for a sauna session and experience a detoxifying sweat and purifying cleanse. As the heat works its magic, your body naturally eliminates toxins through the skin. Just a few minutes in the sauna can also promote relaxation, reduce stress levels, and enhance your overall well-being.
Eat clean. If you’ve overindulged in alcohol or processed foods, get back on track with fresh vegetables and fruits, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. When possible, try to get organic produce to lessen exposure to pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
Drink plenty of water. With the Texas sun beating down, it’s easy to lose water and electrolytes through perspiration. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day to stay hydrated and help your body’s natural detoxification processes. A squeeze of lemon can provide an extra detox boost since lemon helps alkalize the body and eliminate toxins.
Do a digital detox. Instead of scrolling social media or watching TV, spend time on soul-nourishing activities. Call a loved one, read a book, or go for a walk outside. Taking a break from screens can help reduce stress and improve sleep.
Move your body. Any kind of exercise promotes detoxification. Movement helps stimulate the lymphatic system, which eliminates toxins from the body. Whether you enjoy cycling, jogging, swimming, or another activity, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily to support your detox efforts.
Set the scene for better slumber. Sleep plays a vital role in the body’s detoxification process, allowing it to repair and rejuvenate. When you’re asleep, the brain’s glymphatic system becomes more active, helping remove toxins and waste products accumulated during the day. Try practicing relaxation techniques before bed, from gentle stretches to mindful meditation.
Detoxing lets you reboot your health and revitalize your body and mind. It can also pave the way for healthy long-term habits, like prioritizing regular exercise or getting adequate sleep. Don’t be afraid to dip your toe into the detox waters this summer — it can be a fi rst step to a lifetime of better health.
What to Do Before Starting a Detox
It’s important to prepare yourself physically and mentally before embarking on a detox. Use this guide to prepare:
Set clear intentions. What do you want to achieve with this detox? If you want to lose weight, keep your goal realistic and remember that the purpose of a detox isn’t to drop a dress size but to kickstart healthier habits.
Decide when to begin. Maybe you have a wedding or class reunion coming up, or perhaps you want to feel energetic and vibrant for a big Fourth of July bash. Use these events to motivate you.
Choose a duration for your detox. Some people do a detox for a day or two, while others embark on a longer detox plan. Consider your goal and lifestyle when choosing a length.
Mentally prepare. You might be a bit cranky when you begin a detox. Cutting out coffee or sugar can do that to a person. Observe how you feel and allow your emotions to come and go.

SWEDISH MASSAGE
One of the most well-known types of massages, this technique uses kneading, circular movements, and long, flowing strokes to promote relaxation. Book a Swedish massage if you want to relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, or lower your overall stress. If you’re new to massage therapy, this is also a great introductory technique.
HOT STONE MASSAGE
The combination of heat and massage therapy can make your aches and pains melt away. This technique involves warm, smooth stones gliding over specific points of the body to improve blood flow, soothe sore muscles, and enhance relaxation.
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
If you’re dealing with chronic pain or stubborn knots, this massage technique can provide targeted relief. Therapists use firm pressure to reach deeper layers of connective tissue and muscle, which can loosen kinks and promote long-term relief.
COUPLES MASSAGE
Has it been a minute since you’ve enjoyed some relaxation with your significant other? Book a couples massage and let your worries go for a while. You’ll relax in separate beds and receive massage therapy side by side. This shared experience can help you both feel rejuvenated and reconnected.
SPORTS MASSAGE
If you’re a runner, pickleball enthusiast, or just live an active lifestyle, a sports massage can relax aching muscles, improve circulation, and prevent (or treat) sports-related injuries. This technique involves stretching, compression, and deep tissue work to improve flexibility and alleviate muscle soreness.
SHIATSU MASSAGE
The term “shiatsu” literally means “fi nger pressure” in Japanese, though therapists may also use palms and elbows in a session. It’s a gentle technique that relieves tension, improves circulation, and lifts your mood. This type of massage can also provide relief from issues like arthritis, migraines, and sleep disorders.
THAI MASSAGE
Sometimes called “lazy man’s yoga,” this technique focuses on stretching and yoga poses to help reduce stress, soothe back pain, and increase flexibility. You simply lie down and allow your massage therapist to put your body in various yoga poses. It’s a centuries-old practice that brings all the relaxation of a yoga class without any of the work. Whether you want to relieve muscle tension, heal injuries, or boost your mood, massage therapy is a great way to restore harmony to your body and mind.
Maximize
Your Massage Experience
To get the most out of your massage, be sure to communicate any medical conditions or preferences to your therapist. Some other tips include:
• Arrive a few minutes early. If you show up late and frenzied, it will take longer to relax. Give your self time to breathe and ease into the session.
• Avoid a big meal beforehand. You don’t want to arrive with a full belly, but you also shouldn’t be hungry. It’s best to eat a light meal or have a snack like a handful of almonds or a banana before your massage.
• Hydrate. Drink plenty of water before and after your massage. Water helps your kidneys and liver flush out toxins that are released during the massage.
• Disrobe to your comfort level. Fully undressing can help your massage therapist perform the treatment, but it’s up to you how much you take off. Keep in mind that only the part of the body being worked on will be uncovered.

RESTFUL retreat
10 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BEDROOM A COMFORTING SPACE
Creating a primary bedroom that feels like a luxurious hotel or a relaxing retreat can signifi cantly enhance your daily life. The goal is to design a space that promotes comfort, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Here’s a guide to help you achieve that:
CHOOSE A SERENE COLOR PALETTE
Select colors that promote tranquility and relaxation. Soft neutrals like beige, ivory, or light gray create a calming atmosphere. Pastel shades such as pale blue, mint green, or lavender can also contribute to a soothing environment.
60 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2024 homestead
INVEST IN LUXURIOUS BEDDING
Upgrade your bedding to enhance comfort and luxury. Choose sheets with a high thread count for a soft and silky feel against your skin. Invest in plush pillows that provide adequate support and a comfortable mattress that ensures a restful sleep.
LAYER TEXTURES FOR COMFORT
Incorporate various textures to add depth and coziness to your bedroom. Consider using faux fur throws, velvet cushions, or linen curtains. A textured rug can also contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere.
SET THE MOOD WITH AMBIENT LIGHTING
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a relaxing atmosphere. Install dimmer switches to adjust the brightness levels according to your mood. Add bedside lamps with warm, soft light for reading or relaxation. LED strip lights placed strategically can create a gentle, soothing glow.
PERSONALIZE WITH MEANINGFUL
DECOR
Add personal touches to make the space uniquely yours. Display framed photos, artwork, or sentimental objects that bring joy and positive memories. Incorporate decor items that reflect your interests, hobbies, or travel experiences.

KEEP IT ORGANIZED AND CLUTTER-FREE
A clutter-free environment promotes peace of mind and relaxation. Utilize storage solutions such as dressers, nightstands with drawers, or under-bed storage containers to keep your belongings organized and out of sight. Clear surfaces contribute to a serene and spacious feel.
CREATE A COZY SEATING AREA
If space permits, designate a cozy corner for relaxation and unwinding. Include a comfortable armchair or chaise lounge where you can read, meditate, or enjoy a cup of tea. Add a soft throw and cushions for extra comfort.
62 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2024 homestead
BRING NATURE INDOORS
Add elements of nature to connect with the outdoors. Place potted plants like peace lilies, snake plants, or succulents to improve air quality and add a touch of greenery. Fresh fl owers in a vase can add color and fragrance, enhancing the surroundings.
INSTALL BLACKOUT CURTAINS
Ensure optimal sleep quality by installing blackout curtains or shades. These block external light and noise, creating a serene sleep environment. Choose curtains in a color that complements your room’s color scheme for a cohesive look.
INCORPORATE AROMATHERAPY
Enhance relaxation and promote better sleep with aromatherapy. Use essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, or eucalyptus in a diffuser or oil burner. Scented candles with calming fragrances can also create a soothing atmosphere. By paying attention to these details and incorporating them into your primary bedroom design, you can create a luxurious hotel-like retreat where you can escape, unwind, and recharge after a long day.

PEACE OF mind
THE INS AND OUTS OF HOME WARRANTIES
BY PETE ALFANO
Whether this is your first time through the process, or you have done it before, buying a house can be an exciting and daunting experience. However, the buyer then has to factor in the annual cost of property taxes and a homeowners insurance policy and estimate how much will be spent on utilities and updates.
What is occasionally glossed over or never considered enough is the cost of repairs, replacement, or routine maintenance of heating and cooling systems, electrical and plumbing systems, kitchen, and laundry appliances, and, if the house has a pool, the pool equipment. While a home inspection verifies that everything is in working
64 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2024 homestead
order on the day of the inspection, it doesn’t mean something won’t break down soon after you move in.
This accounts for the popularity of home warranties. For an annual premium, they cover all or most of the repairs or replacement of major systems and appliances in the home. And if you are wondering, homeowners insurance does not cover those systems, it covers damage or loss from natural or man-made disasters such as fi res, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.
For someone moving into a newly built house, a home warranty isn’t necessary during the fi rst year, as the builder’s warranty should cover all systems and appliances. Many real estate transactions for older homes now include a one-year home warranty paid by the seller to protect the new homeowner. But whether you are keeping the appliances or bringing your own, repairs or replacements will be needed at some point.
Many companies offer home warranty protection in a competitive fi eld, but essentially, the policies are similar. A company may offer three levels of protection, each covering more items or providing a larger allowance for a replacement. So, policies can range from $400 to $1,400 and more, especially if a homeowner wants coverage for pool equipment.
In addition to an annual premium, a homeowner pays a service charge of at least $50 to $75 and sometimes more when a technician arrives to fi x the problem. The homeowner does not choose the vendor either, the home warranty company partners with vendors who contact you after the claim is made with the home warranty company.
Keep in mind how replacing appliances or systems works. For example, if the average cost of a new dishwasher is $500, but the homeowner wants to upgrade to one that sells for $1,200, then the homeowner will pay the difference. That means $700 plus the service charge, although that includes installation. This still represents significant savings, and it is up to the homeowner to decide whether the replacement cost and annual premium are worth the expense.
For some homeowners, the convenience, peace of mind, levels of coverage, and fixed annual premium make a home warranty policy another form of insurance. The downside to these policies is that premiums tend to increase from year to year, homeowners cannot choose their own vendors, and the premiums are not reimbursed if no claims are made over time.
There is also that extra step. The homeowner contacts the home warranty company, which contacts the vendor, who then calls the homeowner. That can delay service. The homeowner, however, always has the option of canceling a policy or changing the coverage. And because the home warranty business is competitive, discounts are usually available.
Choosing a Home Warranty Comapny
Picking a home warranty company involves researching its website online and comparing it to levels of coverage, annual premium, service charge, and reputation of its competitors. Forbes Advisor, Consumer Advocate.org, and besthomewarrantyonline.com are three websites that list the higher-rated companies, the levels of coverage, and side-by-side comparisons. When you have done your homework, call at least three companies to verify what you have read and see if they offer incentives to first-time customers.
Top Home Warranty Services, for example, list Select, Choice, and American Home Shield as among the best in Texas. Incentives can range from one or two free months of coverage to a fixed dollar amount reduction of the first annual premium. Some companies have now added roof repairs to their coverage, although that will increase the premium. However, consider that if your roof is damaged by a weather event, such as a hailstorm, then repair or replacement is likely covered by a homeowners policy.

ESCAPE TO the cape
HEAD NORTHEAST FOR SOME R&R
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Sandcastles, campfires on the beach, nature trails, whale watching, historic lighthouses, music festivals, quaint seaside villages — there’s nothing quite like an escape to Cape Cod. With a multitude of things to do and see, this 65-mile-long hook-shaped peninsula stretching into the Atlantic Ocean offers something for everyone.
FIVE REASONS YOU’LL LOVE VACATIONING IN CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS
Beach Life – With miles of soft sand beaches, there’s a favorite oceanside or bayside spot for everyone. Nauset Beach in Orleans offers a classic Cape Cod experience. If you prefer calmer waters, try Mayfl ower Beach (Dennis), Old Silver Beach near Vineyard Sound (Falmouth), or Craigville Beach on Nantucket Sound (Barnstable). Catch a sunrise at Lighthouse Beach (Chatham), or soak in a majestic sunset at secluded Chapin Beach (Dennis), bayside Skaket Beach (Orleans), or at the tip of the Cape at Race Point Beach in Provincetown. Visit CapeCodChamber.org/thingsto-do/beaches/ for detailed beach information.
Cape Cod National Seashore – Covering over 44,000 acres, the National Seashore is home to diverse marine, estuarine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. Explore its undulating dunes, coastal bluffs, heathlands, forested ponds, and beaches. Speaking of beaches, the National Seashore boasts six of them. Coast Guard Beach and Nauset Light Beach are both in Eastham. Race Point Beach and Herring Cove Beach are near Provincetown. Marconi Beach is on Cape Cod Bay in Wellfleet, and Head of the Meadow Beach is ocean-side in Truro.

Tip: Spend an evening around your own beach campfire. Visit NPS.gov/caco for general information and to read about beach campfi re permits, which may be reserved three days in advance.
Hiking, Biking, Fishing – Wildlife enthusiasts enjoy Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge (FWS.gov/refuge/ Monomoy), which stretches from Chatham into the Nantucket Sound. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (MassAudubon.org/places-to-explore/wildlifesanctuaries/wellfleet-bay) covers over 900 acres of salt marsh, sandy beach, and pine woodland. Great Island Trail (Wellfleet) leads to beautiful, secluded beaches and marsh views. Check the tidal chart since portions of this trail may be submerged at high tide.
The Cape Cod Rail Trail (Mass.gov/locations/ cape-cod-rail-trail) includes 25 miles of paved trails for biking (rentals are available) or walking. The calm waters of Cape Cod Bay and the area’s numerous rivers and estuaries provide kayaking, paddleboarding, and even sailing opportunities. Or take a commercial sunset cruise out of Hyannis.
If you like to fi sh, reserve a day with one of Cape’s charter fishing companies. Have fun reeling in striped bass, bluefi sh, and black seabass, to name a few.
Ocean-fresh Seafood – Excellent restaurants abound, serving various types of cuisine and local specialties like fresh lobster, dayboat sea scallops, and clams. Try freshly harvested Wellfleet oysters, farmed in protected flats of cold, fast-moving waters, or indulge in traditional New England lobster or clambake on the beach. If you have a place to cook, you can buy fresh catch off the boat, including, you guessed it — cod, which is light and fl akey.
