METHODIST ORTHOPAEDIC SURGICAL ASSOCIATES

JOHN R. HARRIS, MD AND EDWARD M. MAIRURA, MD

BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

Did you know you have 206 bones in your body?

In fact, there are 26 in one of your feet alone, 54 in one of your hands (if you include the wrist). The longest and strongest of your bones is your femur or thigh bone. The smallest and lightest is in your inner ear. Then, there are your indispensable joints, the places where your bones meet and connect. Some joints, like those in your limbs, move freely. Others, like those in your skull don’t move at all. Ball and socket joints, like in your hip and shoulder, move quite a bit. Gliding joints, like in your ankle and wrist, do this by gliding against each other. While others, like in your knee and elbow, operate similar to the hinge on a door.

It can be easy not to think about these fascinating bones and joints while they’re doing just what they were created to do. But when suddenly they don’t, you need experts to evaluate and address the problem, experts like Drs. Harris and Mairura at Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates. They’re not called “The Bones Docs” for nothing.

That’s just what Robert found when, at age 59, it became clear that he needed a double knee replacement. Never having undergone surgery, Robert did his homework, looking for a highly qualified and experienced orthopedic surgeon. During his initial consultation with Dr. Edward Mairura at Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates, he was impressed with the questions Dr. Mairura asked and the time he took really getting to know him and educating him on what he could expect from the surgery.

As Robert wrote in a five-star online review,

“I have to say that surgery was the best thing I’ve ever done. Dr. Mairura did my left knee in mid-March 2024 and it went so well I had the other done in early June 2024. He and his entire staff at both the practice office and at the surgical center were absolutely superb on both occasions. Dr. Mairura guided me from early visits through the surgery with an amazing amount of care and concern to provide the information I needed to make an informed decision and then complete information about the surgery and what to expect afterward. On a scale of 0 to 10 for pain after surgery I was at a 0 or 1 for BOTH knees the day of and after surgery.”

“Dr. Mairura is the consummate professional with thousands of surgeries behind him as well as being a phenomenal person, a calming presence that reassures you in every way that you have chosen the best of the best. If you’re considering the surgical route to solve your issues, I would absolutely choose Dr. Mairura and MOSA.”

Robert is only one of thousands of patients who’ve gotten their quality of life back thanks to “The Bone Docs”, John Harris and Edward Mairura.

“Our approach is to give each patient our full attention at a visit and treat them as a person and not just another surgery,” said Dr. Harris. “I like to tell my patients, ‘I treat patients, not x-rays.’ A patient is more than just a broken bone or case of arthritis that needs to be addressed. Our goal is to get patients and athletes (of all ages) back to their particular activity or sport as soon and as safely as possible, to get them back at their very best.”

Dr. Mairura shares this patient-first philosophy and both men bring a strong faith into their practice of medicine.

“We let our faith in Jesus Christ reflect in our work daily,” Dr. Mairura said. “Our goal is always to listen, treat patients with love and respect as if they were our own family members, and to optimize non-surgical treatment options fi rst— offering surgery only as a last resort.”
