KAREN F. FROM MANSFIELD, TEXAS

101.8 LOST

POUNDS.

I made a decision to change my life. I wanted to get healthier and that meant I needed to lose weight. I had tried other ways, different diets and programs, but I never seemed to be able to stick to it. One day I saw Diet Solution, not knowing what to expect, I decided to give it a try. What I found was a group of great people, all willing to help me as if I was their only patient. The support and encouragement I received has been what I needed to reach my goal.

8 14 years and over 23,000 labor and delivery patients, like Ashley. Twenty-eight weeks into her pregnancy with fraternal twins, Ashley Donnell awoke to cramping. After coming in for a checkup, her doctors diagnosed her condition and acted fast. Ashley trusted her medical team at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, and seven hours later her twins were born, 12 weeks early and safely in the care of our advanced neonatal intensive care unit. Today, Ashley and her twins are standing in front of a mural in downtown Mansfield, commissioned by the same women and children’s services team that cared for them.

More than any other time of year, fall and the holidays are about home and family. As the weather begins to change, it stirs up memories of my own childhood holidays, fall activities with my kids, and all the fall fun I’m planning with my grand girls. Fall is about football and comfy clothes, snuggling by the fireplace with soup on the stove. It’s about steaming cups of cocoa, scarves and boots, walks in the woods, lazy visits with friends—and pumpkin-spice everything. As the leaves turn colors and fall to the ground, it’s reflective of the seasons in each of our lives. Maybe you’re in a waiting period, praying and believing that change will come but feeling impatient for God’s answer. Never doubt He hears your petitions and knows your heart. He’s aware of every tear you shed. (Psalms 56: 8) He’ll never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5) He has plans to prosper you and give you hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) Rest in that assurance. And as we enjoy this time of year, when the earth appears to sleep, never forget that, just as God has a plan for new, green life on His earth in the spring, He’s faithful to complete the work He’s begun in you (Philippians 1:6) and to answer the prayers of your heart.

The fall season is upon us and the City of Mansfield continues to move forward. The 2022 Bond Election Steering Committee continues to hear from city staff about capital projects that would provide noteworthy essentials and remarkable experiences for residents and visitors of the city. The committee is a group of 28 Mansfield residents tasked with deciding which and how many of the capital projects to recommend to the Mansfield City Council for consideration. The City Council and I are unwavering in our belief that we must hear from the citizenry as we steer our city toward the world-class destination we aspire to become. To that end, the Mansfield City Council adopted the fiscal year 2021-22 budget and property tax rate during the Sept. 13 regular City Council meeting. The budget was made with the City of Mansfield’s guiding principles in mind. We call these principles “True NORTH.” “True

Welcome to the fall season. We have great events planned in Grand Prairie and our new development continues to expand and thrive as well. If you like to eat, Longhorn Steakhouse is now open in Epic West on SH 161 and Twin Peaks will open there soon. Lucky’s Hot Chicken also plans to open a restaurant near Epic East and Tiff’s Treats will open a store in Epic West in early 2022. A new Sprouts grocery store will open at Carrier Parkway and Pioneer Parkway in early 2022. Hibbet Sporting Goods has also opened a store in Epic West. City officials and developers broke ground on Bolder Adventure Park in August. This indoor family entertainment facility with rock climbing, zip lines, ropes courses, tubing slides and more is scheduled to open in summer 2022. City Councilman Kurt Johnson will have a District 6 Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, Oct. 14, 6-8 p.m. at the Mira Lagos Clubhouse. He’ll discuss community

The city’s property tax rate will remain the same in fiscal year 2021-22 as it is currently: $0.69 per $100 of assessed valuation. Our new budget will allow for more funding for the Community Engagement Division, which is working on a new digital media studio that will be operational this month. The city created this space in City Hall so its communications professionals can better engage with Mansfield residents and create content that gives Mansfield residents a better understanding of what is happening in their community. We are poised for an exciting fall season and the people of our region should expect even better days ahead.

The secret is out about The American Dream City and it seems there’s a rush to get onboard. For the fifth straight year, UTA enrolled a record-breaking number of freshmen. General Motors just announced a $55 million improvement to its Arlington assembly plant. And small business owners and entrepreneurs are finding encouragement and success through free and affordable services such as networking events, workshops, digital resources, and professional mentorship connections. (Find out what’s available on the City of Arlington’s Economic Development website.) Arlington citizens are making their mark outside of Texas, too. One of them is UTA assistant professor of art and history, Carlos Donjuan, who was recently selected by

ARLI NGTON Facebook to create a mural at the company ’s Fremont, California facility. And last month, the City of Arlington’s Office of Communication was honored with seven awards from the national organization, City-County Communications, for its video programming, marketing, photography, and other community outreach efforts. While the last year and a half have brought challenges, I couldn’t be prouder of the way the people and businesses of Arlington have risen to the occasion, making this an even better place to live, work, play, and worship.

Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So, Carmen moves in and takes the job. Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop — and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family? C

ody Bauer grew up in his family’s dental practice with his sweet mama running the office and his dad providing dental excellence to Cody’s schoolmates, neighbors, and friends. Of the four Bauer children, he was the most interested in his dad’s career. He loved being around the office, which his mom assured was warm and welcoming, loved listening to his dad chat with and “do life” with his patients, and loved learning all he could about the dental profession. When time came for him to choose a course of study and ultimately a career, it was a no-brainer. Cody would be a dentist and join his mom and dad at Mansfield Family Dentistry. Now as Dr. Cody Bauer, he shares the practice with his dad and mentor. And the two men rely on the organizational skills and loving, homey touches provided by his mom.

The Bauer family reached a milestone recently, as Dr. John began seeing his fourth generation of patients. “It means a lot to know a patient who came to us throughout their childhood is now returning with their own kids,” Dr. John said. “We begin as soon as a child is ready to sit in the chair for routine cleaning and are happy to provide everything they need for healthy teeth and optimum oral health throughout their lives.” For over 40 years, Mansfield Family Dentistry has been there for everything from a simple cleaning or filling to cosmetic procedures, including teeth straightening and full-mouth makeovers, delivered with integrity and compassion from a family Mansfield has learned to trust.

ALL UNDER ONE ROOF “It’s important to us to offer everything our patients need under one roof, where they’re already comfortable,” Dr. John said. “When we realize, during a routine check-up, for instance, that a patient needs a root canal,

tooth extraction, or dental implant or when they inquire about a cosmetic procedure, the last thing they want is to be referred out to a strange dental practice. We’re happy to offer everything they need right here, where they’re already comfortable, including cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, and Invisalign clear braces, for healthy teeth and a gorgeous smile.”

PATIENT EDUCATION From the beginning, the Bauers have taken seriously their role as educators to patients of all ages, teaching them the importance of healthy oral hygiene, not just for the health of their teeth but for their overall health. “Over that time, more and more has been discovered about the affect your oral health has on the rest of your body and on your chances of developing conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes,” Dr. Cody said. “That’s why patient education is so important, offering each patient the tools they need for a

“Dentistry is just as much about preventative care as it is about fi xing existing problems,” Dr. Cody continued. “Oral hygiene is crucial to a patient’s wellbeing. And through patience and kindness we’re raising up a generation of kids who love visiting the dentist.”

CARE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Mansfield Dentistry patients range in age from three to 93 with several generations of some families trusting the team for all their oral health needs. “Family is the most important thing for us, so we make sure every patient who comes through our doors is treated like a member of the family,” Dr. John said. “There’s nothing more rewarding than building relationships with our patients and being able to watch them grow, from before they lose their baby teeth to when they’re having babies of their own.”

etiquette W H AT D O E S T H E B I B L E S AY A B O U T M A N N E R S ? BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

s a mother of twelve — including seven girls — my mom worked hard to impart the manners and social “niceties” her mother had taught her. I, in turn, am trying to pass them along to my own four kids. But, as I do, I’m starting to realize proper manners in the 21st century have less to do with knowing a demitasse spoon from an oyster fork and more with considering the feelings of others. Think about it, nobody has to tell you to hold the door for someone. If their welfare is your first concern, you’ll just naturally hold it. You don’t have to remember to wait for every guest to be served before you begin eating. If you’re considering their feelings above your own, you’ll want to wait. That got me thinking. If Jesus wrote a book on etiquette, what would He include? Good manners God’s way would, I think, look something like this.

JUST A NOTE TO SAY

Consider a time you opened your mailbox to find a pretty little card from someone offering you a word of encouragement when you needed it most.

My mother was big on “the little note.” Consider a time you opened your mailbox to find a pretty little card from someone offering you a word of encouragement when you needed it most. That’s the power of the little note, and it’s absolutely Biblical. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 tells us, “Encourage one another and build each other up.” Proverbs 25:11-12 says, “Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances.” And Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a good word makes it glad.” Surely this includes a good written word. It takes five minutes to lift someone’s spirits with a few heartfelt words written inside a little note.

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST If you love entertaining as I do, Jesus offered a model for your next get-together when He stopped His meal and — much to the surprise of His disciples — bent to wash their feet. Welcoming guests into your home should never be about impressing them with your décor or wowing them with your culinary abilities but about loving them, serving them, and making them feel like royalty, as long as they’re under your roof, just like Jesus did.

SAY WHAT? Dissing has become a national pastime. And though I’ll admit, I love a good Julia Sugarbaker rant, Proverbs 10:19 tells us, “He who restrains his lips is wise.” James 1:19 calls believers to “be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to get angry,” and Matthew 12:36-37 warns, “every careless word people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.” Yikes! Unkind words, put-downs, or criticism should never become a sport for a Christian. Jesus told his followers that others would know them by their love for one another. That includes speaking loving words.

THE COMPANY YOU KEEP

AFTER YOU If Jesus were on earth today, He’d never take the last cookie on the plate, cut somebody off in traffic, or sneak into the ten-items-or-less-Line with fifteen things. How do I know? Consider Philippians 2, where God through Paul tells us to be like-minded with Jesus, then writes, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard others as more important than yourselves.” So, there’s our blueprint. Of course, putting others first is anything but instinctive, for we are mere mortals. Good thing Paul goes on to say, “It is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13) Now we know God wants us to put others first, like His Son, and that He’ll enable us to do so.

Religious leaders were shocked to see Jesus associate with the dregs of society. But Jesus looked past socioeconomics to the people within, healing lepers no one else would touch and loving the woman others were waiting to stone. He looked past the rags of the beggar and the sins of the prostitute. Then he told us in Matthew 25, “Whatsoever you do for the least of our brothers that you do unto Me.” Choose your friends not for what they can do for you, but for what your Father can do for them through you. I suppose Jesus’ book on etiquette could be summed up in His golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (Luke 6:31) Of course, there’s nothing wrong with teaching our children to keep their elbows off the table and how to conduct a proper introduction. But all the social graces in the world pale by comparison to simply doing unto family, friends, neighbors, and total strangers as we would have them do unto us and loving them the way Jesus loves us.

Estate planning does not always have to be a complicated process. For most of us, a few vital documents will ensure that a sad situation is not made worse by prolonged legal controversies.

Basic Estate Planning Documents A Will Even a young person in their 20s just starting their career needs a will stating how their assets should be distributed and to whom. If you die intestate — without a will — your estate will be distributed according to the intestate laws of your state. These laws are typically designed to reflect what the deceased would most likely prefer to happen, but there’s no guarantee the distribution of your assets will reflect your personal wishes. If you have minor children or plan to have children, your will should contain a guardianship clause naming the personal guardian(s)who will care for your children if you no longer can. Your will also enables you to name a guardian for your child’s finances, who may be the same individual as the personal guardian or someone different. Durable Power of Attorney This document gives a trusted person authority to handle your finances and property if you become incapacitated and unable to handle your own affairs. This person is called your agent or attorney-in-fact, but they do not have to be an actual attorney. Medical Power of Attorney This document names an agent to oversee your medical treatment if you cannot do so and work with your doctors and other health care providers to make sure you get the kind

of medical treatment you desire. Your designated agent is legally bound to follow your directives to the extent they know them. In preparing your powers of attorney, you can name one agent for both or one for each document. If you designate two agents, they must be able to work together amicably when making decisions on your behalf. Health Care Directive Also known as a living will or Texas Directive to Physicians, this document becomes important if you are terminally ill or in a persistent vegetative state and unable to communicate your wishes about medications and life-prolonging procedures. It clearly states the medications and procedures you want, or don’t want, to prolong your life. People often have both a living will and medical power of attorney to ensure they receive the medical treatment they desire. Today you can find online templates enabling you to prepare these documents yourself, but not all are equal in quality, and even the best of them cannot provide the personalized guidance of an experienced estate attorney. Additionally, you might overlook significant issues because of your lack of understanding of all the details involved in estate planning. While your estate plan doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, a comprehensive plan drawn up with professional legal assistance will ensure that the people who mean the most to you are adequately cared for when you’re no longer here.

The team practices safe social distancing within the confines of the office. A C OHESIVE TEA M O F PROFES S I ON AL S “Very few dental teams that worked together prior to the pandemic have continued to work together to date,” Dr. Brimhall says. The Smile Doctors Arlington team is a close-knit family, truly caring for each other. Their compassionate and considerate demeanor is an important ref lection of the concern and care they give not only to patients, but others as well. Prior to becoming a Smile Doctors’ affiliated orthodontist, Dr. Brimhall owned a private orthodontics practice in Colorado. He realized there’s strength in numbers, referring to Smile Doctors’ numerous practice locations and colleagues nationwide.

“The decision to affiliate with Smile Doctors four years ago has been a huge blessing for me,” he says. After the move to Texas, Dr. Brimhall and his wife, Kristin, successfully blended their two families and children together. “It’s awesome to have a big family,” he says, both personally and professionally. He treats each patient like extended family, with the utmost respect and integrity. CE L E B R AT I N G SU C C ESS When a patient’s treatment is complete and braces are finally removed, it’s time for office festivities to begin. Congratulations are fun and exciting at Smile Doctors, with the entire team celebrating, cheering, and applauding along with the patient. “We go all out, turning the lights down and the disco ball on,” Dr. Brimhall says, “making it an experience they’ll always remember.” Dr. Brimhall attended Brigham Young University as an undergraduate and earned his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry and master’s degree in science from the University of Kentucky. He is a member of many dental associations, including the American Board of Orthodontics, the American Association of Orthodontists, and the American Dental Association. Leisure time for Dr. Brimhall is actively spent hiking outside. “I love exploring our national parks and have been to 27 so far,” he says. His bucket list includes traveling with his family to visit the rest of our nation’s beautiful parks.

THE WONDERS OF

IV Therapy

I M M E D I AT E D E L I V E R Y O F T H E THINGS YOUR BODY NEEDS BY D R . M AN D Y COT TE N

-list celebrities and elite athletes are discovering the benefits of IV therapy to quickly access the essential vitamins and nutrients their bodies need for optimal wellness. Others are utilizing IV therapy to help their body heal itself naturally and recover faster from health setbacks. IV drips allow the body to absorb the things it needs — the things it craves — at a higher percentage, feeding cells directly and fueling a balanced life, as well as helping battle the toxins that, unfortunately, are part of our day-to-day lives. Just like your car needs gas to run, your body needs essential nutrients and proper hydration to function at its best. Enter IV therapy, a breakthrough wellness trends that enables anyone to obtain both hydration and missing nutrients directly into their bloodstream and right where they need it most. With IV treatment administered by a qualified healthcare professional, fluids go directly into your bloodstream, so your body doesn’t have to wait hours for the digestion process before reaping the desired benefits. Trained healthcare professionals know how to prepare and insert the needle into your vein and deliver the fluids from the IV line, minimizing any risk of infection or contamination and ensuring you’re comfortable during your treatment. With regularly scheduled IV therapy, it’s

easy to realize your health goals — looking, feeling, and performing at your best. For years, IV therapy was associated with a stay in the hospital. It’s now widely available at select healthcare facilities, “drip bars”, and even right in your home. Most report that IV therapy helps them feel relaxed, re-energized, and revitalized with ingredients delivered into the bloodstream promoting sensations of relaxation. If the pandemic of the last year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of a robust immune system. IV therapy is also an excellent way to strengthen and bolster your immune system, as essential nutrients and hydration are delivered into your bloodstream to keep it working the way it should, fighting off threats to your health. IV therapy isn’t one-fits-all but a highly personalized treatment that can be adjusted based on individual needs. Whether you’re hoping to enhance your athletic recovery, fight off symptoms of a range of illnesses, even recover from a hangover, your healthcare provider can talk to you about creating an IV delivery that’s specific to your individual lifestyle, needs, and desires. Ask for IV treatment with natural ingredients such as vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and B12, the very things your body craves, delivered directly into your bloodstream helping you feel your best — faster.

A ROUTINE MAMMOGR AM S AV E D M Y L I F E — I T C O U L D S AV E Y O U R S , T O O BY ANNET T E BRO O KS

hen you hear that a 15-minute, noninvasive imaging test could potentially save your life, chances are, you wouldn’t think twice about doing it. Yet every year, millions of women skip or postpone their annual screening mammogram despite knowing that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

48

wellness | SCREEN SAVER

Sure, it’s tempting to skip or postpone a mammogram. Life is busy, and for many of us, mammograms are uncomfortable during breast compression. Other things can sway us, too. Perhaps previous mammograms have been clear for years. Maybe you don’t have a family history of breast cancer. Or, since you feel nothing abnormal when doing a breast self-exam, you think you’re good. Well, here are some facts to consider. More than 75% of women with breast cancer have no family history of the disease, and less than 10% have a known gene mutation that increases risk. Mammograms can detect cancers before a lump is ever felt via breast self-exam or a clinical breast exam. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Trusted Source, doctors most often diagnose breast cancer in females aged 55–64 years, with 62 being the median age.

BENEFITS OF EARLY DETECTION Breast cancer is more treatable than ever before, and your chance of survival increases if it’s detected at an early stage before it has spread. Per the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for most breast cancer cases diagnosed early at the localized stage — Stage I and not having spread to lymph nodes or other places outside of the breast — is estimated at 99 to 100%. These are odds to celebrate. Also, depending on your diagnosis (some breast cancers are extremely aggressive while others are not), early detection may mean you can choose less invasive and less extensive treatment options. You could, for example, be a candidate for lumpectomy versus mastectomy and radiation therapy without chemotherapy as I was. Options like this are a big deal. They make treatment easier to get through and help ongoing post-treatment side effects be more bearable. Many of us pink sisters deal with side effects from surgery, lymph node removal, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy for years, if not our entire lives. And if you’re diagnosed with estrogen-positive breast cancer, the side effects from pharmaceutical drugs taken for years to block/reduce estrogen production are a supreme challenge for many survivors.

Breakthroughs in Breast Imaging Breast imaging has come a long way since mammograms went mainstream decades ago. Breast-shaped compression surfaces such as SmartCurve help make mammograms more comfortable without compromising image quality. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosyn thesis or DBT) makes it easier for doctors to catch breast cancer early and reduces the chances of a false positive.

A breast MRI can locate some small breast lesions sometimes missed by mammography and is used to help detect breast cancer in women with breast implants and women with dense breast tissue.

FIVE-STEP MONTHLY BREAST SELF-EXAM Breast self-examination (BSE) is a useful and effective tool for checking changes in your breasts and should be part of your overall breast health strategy. Check out BreastCancer.org/symptoms/testing/types/ self_exam for a complete step-by-step BSE and what to do if you find a lump. Please remember, however, that BSE is not a replacement for screening mammograms or seeing your physician for a clinical breast exam.

WATCH YOUR

mouth!

D E N TA L H Y G I E N E A N D I T S I M PA C T O N Y O U R O V E R A L L H E A LT H BY DAVI D BUI C E

ost of us realize the importance of brushing and flossing our teeth daily. However, what you may not appreciate is just how essential dental hygiene is to your overall health. In reality, a synergistic relationship exists between your teeth and gums and the organs throughout your body. What happens in your mouth can adversely affect the proper functioning of other organs beyond your mouth, while at the same time, things occurring in other parts of your body can negatively impact your teeth and gums.

BACTERIA BY THE MILLIONS Much of the story regarding dental hygiene and your overall health begins with the approximately six million bacteria teeming in your mouth. Most are relatively harmless, but not all are. Without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that lead to tooth decay and gum disease. And numerous studies have suggested the bacteria and inflammation associated with periodontitis (severe gum disease) may play a role in spreading disease via the bloodstream to other parts of your body. At the same time, diseases such as diabetes and HIV/ AIDS can lower the body’s resistance to infection and make oral health problems more severe.

wellness | WATCH YOUR MOUTH!

Finally, further complicating the situation, certain medications such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, diuretics, and antidepressants reduce saliva flow. Saliva plays an essential role in protecting you from microbes that multiply and can lead to disease in your mouth and elsewhere in your body.

CONDITIONS BEYOND THE MOUTH LINKED TO ORAL HEALTH Poor oral hygiene may contribute to several health issues, including the following.

Endocarditis – This is an infection that typically occurs when bacteria spread into your bloodstream from other parts of your body, including the mouth, and attaches to the endocardium, the smooth membrane that lines in the inside chambers of the heart and forms the surface of the heart valves.

Atherosclerosis – Although the connection is not fully understood, some studies suggest clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to the inflammation and infections caused by oral bacteria.

Pregnancy and birth conditions – Periodontitis (gum disease) has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

Pneumonia – Certain bacteria in the mouth can be drawn into the lungs, causing pneumonia and other respiratory issues.

BODILY CONDITIONS AFFECTING ORAL HEALTH These conditions, among others, may negatively affect your oral health.

Diabetes – By reducing the body’s resistance to infection, diabetes puts your gums at risk. And in a vicious cycle, periodontal disease can make your blood sugar difficult to control, making your diabetes worse.

HIV/AIDS – Oral problems, such as mucosal lesions, are common in HIV/AIDS patients.

Osteoporosis – Bones easily can fracture when they become fragile due to osteoporosis, and this condition may be connected to tooth and jawbone loss.

PREVENTIVE CARE Given the connection between oral health and other systemic health issues, preventive oral health care is essential. You should brush twice and floss once daily, have regular dental checkups and cleanings, and tell your dentist about any changes in your overall health.

Tooth Loss, Cognitive Decline and Dementia, Is There a Link? According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), about five million Americans aged 65 years or older have dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease accounting for 60 to 80% of dementia cases. To date, there is no known cure for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, and in looking for a cure for the most common forms of dementia, researchers are interested in identifying any potential risk factors contributing to the onset of these disorders. One recent study involving slightly over 34,000 participants took place at New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing. It was conducted by researchers wanting to see if there’s a connection between tooth loss, the number of teeth lost, and cognitive decline, and dementia. The researchers found that tooth loss was associated with a 1.48 times greater risk of cognitive decline and 1.28 times greater risk of dementia. And for every tooth lost, a person had a 1.4% greater risk of cognitive decline and a 1.1% greater risk of developing dementia. The NYU researchers concede that it is unclear exactly what mechanism is behind the seeming connection between tooth loss, cognitive decline, and dementia. More research is needed, but if nothing else, their preliminary findings should provide added impetus for taking good care of your teeth wand gums.

his year, along with the perfect holiday decorations and drop-dead party clothes, you can look your fresh-faced best with these proven procedures.

CHEMICAL PEEL Wouldn’t it be great to wave a magic wand and make uneven skin tones, fine lines, age spots, dull skin, rough patches, sun damage, and acne scarring disappear? A chemical peel can do this by removing the damaged top layers of skin and leaving you with a fresh, glowing complexion. Plus, it’s one of the least invasive and most affordable ways to improve your skin before the holidays. Talk to your aesthetician about the chemical peel and strength that’s right for you.

BOTOX One of the oldest and most widely used FDA-approved wrinkle-reducing injectables, Botox is highly effective at treating the little crinkles and “crow’s feet” that appear at the corner of your eyes when you smile, the crease between eyebrows when you frown, and the furrows on your forehead when you raise your brows. You can usually resume your normal activities immediately after Botox and should begin to see results within two days and full results within a few weeks. Although results vary, for most patients, Botox lasts three to four months.

DERMAL FILLERS Dermal fillers such as Juvéderm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse can give you a younger appearance this holiday season. They add volume in treated areas, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plumping lips, addressing hollowed areas of the face, and generally making thinning, aging skin look younger. Dermal fillers use various substances such as non-allergenic hyaluronic acid to plump up and add volume to the skin.

IPL THERAPY Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a skin rejuvenation process that uses pulses of light to penetrate deep into the skin and diminish sun damage, rosacea, blotchiness, and discoloration, and to reduce large pores and fine lines. The light prompts a response from blood vessels and collagen resulting in skin that looks younger, smoother, and more supple. IPL can also be used to remove unwanted facial hair. Bruising and other minor recovery symptoms may last two days to a week.

LASER SKIN RESURFACING Laser resurfacing is highly effective in repairing sun damage and improving the appearance of aging skin, quickly diminishing uneven pigment or discoloration, brown spots or age spots, rough skin texture, redness or rosacea, large pores, scarring, fine lines, and wrinkles, as well as brightening dull skin for a healthy holiday glow. You may see immediate results or may require a series of treatments, and your aesthetician may provide creams or ointment to use post-procedure. Schedule a consultation with an experienced aesthetician to discuss which of these exciting options can have you ready to shine this holiday season. Discuss and compare potential downtimes of different procedures and make sure you do them early, so you have plenty of time to heal before attending holiday parties and gatherings.

If you want to take things a bit further, an experienced plastic surgeon can turn back the hands of time with these surgical solutions.

FACELIFT A facelift is a surgery to improve signs of aging on the face and neck by lifting tissue and restoring it to a more youthful appearance, removing excess skin, smoothing folds and wrinkles, and tightening underlying facial tissue and muscle. A facelift typically focuses on the bottom two-thirds of the face and areas of the neck. It generally requires two weeks of recovery before resuming normal activities and four weeks before strenuous exercise. The best facelift is one that no one knows you had, and leaves you looking like yourself, only healthy and rested.

EYELID SURGERY Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to rejuvenate upper and/or lower eyelids and restore a more youthful appearance. As we age, fat beneath our skin can begin to protrude from behind and around our eyelids, and skin may begin to droop over the tops of our eyes. Eyelid surgery can address these issues and introduce subtle changes to make you look younger and more rested. The surgery can often be performed in-office in less than an hour, and your eyelids may be swollen and bruised for up to three weeks. The appearance of your eyelids will gradually improve over the next few months.

Always closely follow your doctor’s or aesthetician’s instructions for post-procedure care and recovery.

surroundings M E M O R A B L E D E C O R AT I N G IDEAS FOR YOUR HOME BY C O URT NEY WARREN

e all have them, keepsakes, photos, and memorabilia from the special people and times in our lives. We pull out the boxes, wipe off the dust, and probably feel guilty that these mementos are languishing in the far reaches of the closet or attic. But we don’t want to get rid of them, either, because they’re reminders of our loved ones and happy events. So how can we show these treasured objects the respect they deserve and enjoy them without cluttering our spaces or making our homes a shrine to the past?

FAMILY MATTERS People often ask me for creative ideas for decor, and one of my favorite approaches is to use memorabilia in unexpected ways. When I had the opportunity to design the butler’s pantry in my new home, I knew the perfect way to infuse it with both style and meaning. I took the recipe for my grandmother’s chocolate sheet cake — that’s in my mother’s handwriting — and turned it into wallpaper for the room! I love having this daily reminder of my family’s history in our home. In a former residence, I decorated the bedroom of our sportsloving older son with some of my dad’s memorabilia, including his framed jersey and photo, along with vintage pennants and sports equipment.

homestead | SENTIMENTAL SURROUNDINGS

SIMPLY SPECIAL Be deliberate about what you keep and how you display an heirloom, so it doesn’t look dowdy. Delicate items such as fabric or old papers benefit from the protection of framing. I framed my grandmother’s needlework and layered it with other elements on a wall-hung shelf. While it’s sentimental, it’s also decorative. A display of nuptial keepsakes can be as stale as a piece of wedding cake on your first anniversary. But you could incorporate mementos from the big day — such as an invitation, wedding slippers, and roses from the bridal bouquet — in a unique display like mine using a shadowbox and bell cloche. When I help clients display memorable photos and collections, I help them balance the sentimental with the decorative. Family photos can be especially tricky but having a theme in mind helps. For one client, we created a gallery wall using gold frames to unify the collection and interspersed photos with other decorative elements.

Sometimes our collections are sentimental items we hardly know what to do with. For my client who h ad pet boxer s a nd h ad accumulated many boxer figurines, the key was grouping. Remember that when scattered about, collections contribute to visual clutter. They always have more impact when massed. So, we grouped the figurines on the dresser and used the boxer theme for the whole room. For my clients with a Star Wars passion, we designed the whole media room on that theme. Clustering their pieces in one place gave the collection visual heft. My advice regarding keepsakes, collections, and souvenirs? A few items creatively displayed are better than multiple boxes in storage.

A BETTER

backyard U P DAT E S F O R O U T D O O R L I V I N G S PAC E S BY CHE RY L AL E XAN DE R

all weather has a way of waking everything up, including your inspiration to create new and improved outdoor spaces. Giving a little attention to where you live outside adds value to your home and lots of enjoyment, too, especially in Texas where we can use these spaces almost year-round.

GRILL OUT, CHILL OUT Everything tastes better when cooked outdoors and seems easier because, well, it’s just more fun. Plus, today’s grills are simpler to operate and clean, and everyone will love the outcome. A great backyard paradise addition is an outdoor kitchen, complete with a high-end grill, sink, bar, fridge, maybe a brick oven, and lots of prep space.

POOL TIME, PLAY TIME Nothing says fun like a backyard pool or spa. Whether you want to swim or just have a place to cool off, there is something for every preference and space, even if your yard is small. Also, pools have become easier to care for and less expensive to operate over the years. Variable speed pumps offer energy upgrades for pools and spas that offer excellent savings on energy costs and are quieter than older models.

GET DECKED OUT Upgrading what’s underfoot is a great way to add value and enjoyment to your outdoor space. Options abound from pavers, stone, slate, and more, to stamped concrete that can enhance your deck or patio. If you don’t have one but want one, or if your existing wood deck needs some TLC, consider weather-resistant materials that simulate wood, last longer, and are easier to maintain.

FUN ALL YEAR The addition of music, TV, and games are popular outdoor upgrades. It’s best to house them inside a weather proofed enclosure made specifically to protect your valuables from the elements. Look for one that includes a fan that can distribute heat outside. Consider a distributed audio system. These speakers can be disguised to blend with the outdoor environment.

LOUNGE IN STYLE This might be the year you throw out the tired, old patio furniture and upgrade your leisure style. Select from prints, color splashes, or neutrals that go with everything, and you’ll find that everyone will want to lounge outdoors.

KEEP IT COMFORTABLE Controlling your outdoor climate is a smart way to extend the use of your outdoor investment. The addition of a screened or open porch, palapa, awnings, shade pergola, or gazebo will add shade to your retreat. Ceiling fans will create a nice breeze when things get muggy, and outdoor mist systems — some even with mosquito fogging systems — relieve the heat and keep the uninvited guests at bay while you and your friends and family play. As autumn brings cooler temperatures, extend the use of your outdoor living space with a built-in fire pit or fireplace. You can also consider electric ceiling-mounted heaters and incorporate a radiant heating system into your patio tiles, brick, or concrete. A fall spruce-up is the perfect time to add value to your most prized possession and turn your home into a resort where you and your loved ones will create life-long memories. If you have big dreams but are working within a budget, ask your contractor for a design that lets you complete your project in phases.

KEEP IT CLEAN Feeders should be regularly checked and washed with mild dish soap, diluted bleach, and warm water, then airdried. Doing so will not only deter the spread of disease but give you a chance to discard stale or moldy seed, so the birds are getting good, fresh food. Spend a little time cleaning up spilled seeds or hulls underneath feeders so birds aren’t tempted to ground feed where they ’re in danger from predators.

SQUIRRELS NEED NOT APPLY Let ’s talk about the rodent in the room — squirrels. Everything you do to attract birds is going to serve as a neon sign for these little birdseed thieves who can do all sorts of damage in your yard. Many commercially available birdfeeders come with squirrel-proof features. You can also install baffles on your feeder pole or simply grease the pole to prevent squirrels from climbing to your feeders. An added bonus is the daily Cirque du Soleil performance they ’ll put on trying to circumvent your deterrents. You also need to place feeders away from anything — and I do mean anything — squirrels can use to access them.

SPIRITED

spots

EXPLORING TEX AS’ H AU N T E D P L A C E S BY ANNET T E BRO O KS

ho doesn’t love October, a month with hayrides, pumpkins, and good-natured, spooky fun? This year, buckle up for a Texas road trip (pumpkin-spice lattes in the cup holders) and check out some of Texas’ most spirited places. We’ve pulled together a brief list to kick-start your curiosity and imagination.

Emily Morgan Hotel

EMILY MORGAN HOTEL, SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS San Antonio is a perfect fall getaway destination, and the place to stay is the AAA Four Diamond-rated Emily Morgan Hotel. Located steps away from the Riverwalk and the Alamo and one of San Antonio’s most loved luxury hotels, The Emily Morgan is also known for things that go bump in the night. Named the third most haunted hotel by USA Today in 2015, stories from the staff and guests include spirited encounters, cold spots, light orbs, whispers, and disembodied footsteps. It’s believed these spooky experiences have to do with the building’s history. From 1924 to 1976, the stunning thirteen-story Gothic revivalstyle building, complete with terra cotta gargoyles, was a medical arts building that included a psychiatric ward and morgue. It’s said that ghosts of those who died in the building haunt it to this day. A few floors are reported to be haunted, but we’ve heard the 7th floor is the place to stay if you want to increase your chances of experiencing something supernatural. Rumor has it the stainless-steel swimming pool is made of melted-down hospital carts, but this is a fabricated myth. Guests staying at The Emily Morgan Hotel the last week in October and the first week in November can take advantage of their Room with Your Boo package. It features a special Halloween gift, a welcome cocktail, breakfast in bed with “Boo-berry” pancakes, and more. Call (210) 225-5100 for details. Visit EmilyMorganHotel.com for more information.

HOTEL GALVEZ AND SPA, GALVESTON, TEXAS October is a wonderful time of year to visit Texas’ Gulf Coast, and what better place to spend a few nights than Galveston Island’s iconic Galvez Hotel. The historic AAA Four Diamond-rated hotel has hosted many famous people over the years. Perhaps its most famous guest, now a permanent resident, is Audra’s ghost (“The Lovelorn Lady”).

Hotel Galvez and Spa

Audra was the fiancée of a seaman who stayed at the hotel in room 501 to welcome her love home when his ship docked. One fateful day after a storm, she heard his ship had capsized, and all were lost. Despondent, she took her own life in the hotel’s west turret. Making the story even more tragic, supposedly, her finance had survived and arrived a few days later to discover her demise. Another apparition, Sister Katherine, roams the hotel along with phantom children often heard running and laughing through the halls. After the Hurricane of 1900 ravaged Galveston Island, including St. Mary’s Orphans Asylum, the bodies of ninety children and ten nuns were found along the beach where the 110-year-old Hotel Galvez now stands. The hotel, which topped TripAdvisor’s list of the most haunted hotels in Texas in 2020, is on great terms with its friendly ghosts. Ghost tours are available throughout most of the year. In October, they usually offer a special ghost tour and dinner package. And of course, you can always book your stay in room 501 — if you dare! Call (409) 515-2154 for details. Visit HotelGalvez.com for more information.

YORKTOWN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, YORKTOWN, TEXAS Located on private property about 2.5 hours southwest of Houston, Yorktown Memorial Hospital is considered one of the spookiest — and creepiest — haunted sites in the Lone Star State. If the name sounds familiar, perhaps you saw the Ghost Adventures TV show team investigating it in season four. It’s estimated more

than 2,000 patients died in the hospital, now littered with old gurneys, hospital beds, medical equipment, and even a bizarre doll-fi lled nursery. Nearly everyone who’s been inside has an eerie tale to tell. The hospital offers daily walking tours, photography/video shoots, and overnight investigations for different fees. You’ll need to book an appointment before you arrive and please book early. October is a busy month. Visit Facebook.com/ yorktownhospital/ to learn more and schedule a tour.

THE DRISKILL, AUSTIN, TEXAS True to its fun-loving reputation, our State Capitol pulls out the stops around Halloween and throughout the month, making October an ideal time to visit. When there, stay at The Driskill, located in the heart of downtown Austin. Built in 1886, this award-winning, historic hotel has more to offer than a luxury, 5-star experience. It has spirits!

Jesse Driskill, who built the hotel, is often “seen” around the hotel smoking a cigar. One of the rooms is rumored to be haunted by a jilted bride who took her life in the hotel. It’s also reported the friendly spirit of a child who fell to her death down the grand staircase while chasing after a ball is spotted throughout the hotel, and often on the fifth floor by the portrait of a young girl holding flowers. Not to be outdone, Peter Lawless, who lived at the hotel for 31 years, never left. Keep an eye out for a full-bodied apparition of an older gentleman with black hair and in old-fashioned garb with dark pants, a white shirt, and a pocket watch. When booking your room, be sure to ask about The Ghost City Tours package, which includes a night’s stay, two tickets to a citywide ghost tour, a $25 hotel credit, and a $10 Voodoo Doughnuts gift card.
