letter from the publisher

“Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”

– Proverbs 11:14

Welcome to our May edition where we take time to acknowledge some of the women who make the Arlington/Mansfield area everything it is. These leading women are hard-working and motivated, effective communicators who inspire others—particularly other women. They’re innovators, problem solvers, trailblazers, and world changers.

Throughout the Bible, we see women who led their communities. Miriam was a prophet and led her nation in worship (Exodus 15:20). Deborah was a prophet and judge who led even men into battle (Judges 4-5). Esther saved a nation through her bravery. Phoebe was a deaconess who taught in the Cenchreae church. (Romans 16:1) Tabitha loved, cared for, and led the widow women in Jaffa. (Acts 9:36-42) And Miriam led the Israelites alongside her brothers, Aaron and Moses. (Exodus 15:20-21)

We hope you enjoy meeting and reading about some of our own leading women who leads with insight, empathy, wisdom, and compassion.

Grand Prairie residents have many reasons to be proud of our Police and Fire Departments. Our city prioritizes public safety and benefits from exceptional police and fire protection.

Kudos to our Police Department for their dedication in keeping our crime rates low. With an estimated population of 204,973, Grand Prairie saw another 11 percent crime decrease becoming the fourth safest major city in Texas (FBI) and the safest city in the Dallas-Fort Worth area according to WalletHub.

Our Fire Department has also earned top honors, achieving the ISO #1 rating for the second time. Grand Prairie is one of only three cities in Texas with this distinction and has been awarded the American Heart Gold Plus Award for eight years. This superior service results in insurance savings for our residents. The renewed ISO #1 status means residents will continue to enjoy insurance savings for the next 7-10 years.

I hope you and your family are taking advantage of the gorgeous weather and all the family-friendly things there are to do and enjoy in the American Dream City this month. And I want to extend a hearty Arlington welcome to Sportec Solutions, a Munich-based sports technology company, that has established its US headquarters in Arlington. MAY 3 // THE FALL GUY IN THEATERS

Inspired by the hit 1980s TV series, Ryan Gosling stars in The Fall Guy as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie — being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt — goes missing.

Baz Luhrmann captures the extravagance and decadence of the Jazz Age. Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jay Gatsby is charismatic yet tormented, while the film’s opulent visuals and modern soundtrack add a contemporary flair to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless tale of love and disillusionment.

MAY 7 // THE HAZELBOURNE LADIES MOTORCYCLE AND FLYING CLUB

It is the summer of 1919 and Constance Haverhill is without prospects. Now that all the men have returned from the front, she has been asked to give up her cottage and her job at the estate she helped run during the war. While she looks for a position as a bookkeeper or — horror — a governess, she’s sent as a lady’s companion to an old family friend who is convalescing at a seaside hotel. Despite having only weeks to find a permanent home, Constance is swept up in the social whirl of Hazelbourne-on-Sea after she rescues the local baronet’s daughter, Poppy Wirrall, from a social faux pas.

And then there is Harris, Poppy’s recalcitrant but handsome brother — a fighter pilot recently wounded in battle — who warms in Constance’s presence. But things are more complicated than they seem in this sunny pocket of English high society. As the country prepares to celebrate its hard-won peace, Constance and the women of the club are forced to confront the fact that the freedoms they gained during the war are being revoked.

Whip-smart and utterly transportive, The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club is historical fiction of the highest order: an unforgettable coming-of-age story, a tender romance, and a portrait of a nation on the brink of change.

THE RICH YOUNG RULER: could he be you?

I imagine the crowds looking on with eager anticipation . Finally, someone is ready to get to the point. Someone willing to stop wasting everyone’s time and ask the question they all want to know the answer to.

18 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | may 2024

“Teacher, what good thing shall I do so that I may obtain eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16)

Immediately, a hush falls over the crowd. Nothing but silence as that rich young ruler, and everyone else, awaits the Rabbi’s response.

Jesus seems to almost toy with him as he responds with a few statements about him keeping the Law. But then, like the rich young ruler, He gets to the heart of the matter and gives the final answer everyone has been waiting for:

“If you want to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” (Matthew 19:21)

You likely know how the story ends. The man goes away grieving because he is wealthy and owns a great deal. The price of eternal life is too high.

It’s not over, though. As the man is walking away, headed toward eternal damnation, Jesus turns to His disciples and adds more fuel to the fire:

“Truly I say to you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19:24)

Can we get really clear about what just happened for a minute? A man — clearly seeking eternal life — has come to Jesus and asked Him how to obtain it. The question this man asked strikes at the very purpose of the Gospel message. Jesus was literally walking the earth at that very moment so that He could provide the answer to that question.

But what does Jesus do? Does He lead him in a prayer and tell him he is good to go? Does He say, “Come follow me, and we can work out that whole money issue along the way?”

No! He goes for the jugular. He found the one thing the man wouldn’t give up and demanded it from him!

Where was His grace? Where was His patience and gentleness? The man was seeking salvation from the only One who can grant it, and he walks away grieving! Why doesn’t Jesus go after him? Not only does He not pursue him, He digs His evangelistic hole deeper by making that little camel statement. It’s as if He isn’t even aware that this whole thing is about grace – not works! How grateful we should be that in the two thousand years since He walked the earth, we have finally gotten this evangelism thing straightened out!

As I continue to read the Gospels, and I take a step back and look at the totality of what Jesus said in those four books, I can come to no other conclusion but this: There was only one option — ABSOLUTE SURRENDER! It was everything or nothing. He had no interest in anything in between.

But in America, we have come to believe in a different version of the Gospel. We think we get this world and that one! My friend, that was not the message He preached. He could not have been clearer: “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:25)

I find that most professing believers agree — as do I — that America is a land of the rich. They agree that even the lower and middle classes in America are rich by the world’s standards. But then, as I talk with them further about a passage like this, I hear them say something that worries me.

“But, Mike, we know that Jesus is speaking of the heart. He knew the condition of the rich man’s heart. The question we must ask ourselves is this: ‘Are we willing to give up everything for Him if He asks us?’”

Now, I have to believe there is an underlying message (sometimes even said out loud) being conveyed in that statement.

“I have assessed my own heart, and I am willing! I would give it all up tomorrow if He asked me. But He has not asked. He doesn’t ask everyone for this level of commitment.”

Those words cause me to tremble.

I assume that most are not waiting for some audible voice from God to instruct them to lay down their lives for Him. Which leads me to one conclusion: they are waiting for the Spirit within them, through some strong inner desire or feeling, to make the request. When and if that request from within comes, they will answer in obedience. While I do believe that every now and then a man may be overcome, out of the blue, by a strong desire or feeling within himself to lay down his life for the Kingdom, I don’t believe that is the norm.

I fear that on Judgment Day, many professing Christians will encounter a common fate as they stand before His throne. He will ask them …

“Why didn’t you lay down your life for me? Why didn’t you ‘lose your life’ for my sake?”

They will reply, “Lord, I was waiting for you to ask. Why didn’t you ask?”

He will reply with one of the simplest and most piercing questions they have ever been asked: “Did you not read the Book?”

And in that moment, all things will become clear! They will realize their entire lives were one big rich young ruler conversation. They stood before Him as they read those pages of scripture. They looked Him in the eyes as they glossed over all those difficult things He said. They turned the pages of their Bible each morning, highlighting their favorite passages, without ever really hearing His words. They didn’t want to hear His words. Their hearts refused to hear His call. The price was too high. They deceived themselves as to what it means to follow Christ. And like the rich young ruler, as they are cast away into the outer darkness, they will be grieving as the reality of the mistake they have made grips their perishing soul.

TIFFANY YOUNG & CREW

Bringing A Softer Side To Construction & Remodeling

Construction has historically been viewed as a manly and gritty profession requiring a strong back and rough hands, but this is not the case with Tiffany Young, owner of Tiffany Young & Crew. Tiffany brings a softer side to construction with her sole focus on providing a positive remodeling process for her clients. Tiffany and her crew walk their customers through every step of their remodel project from design to build out and color selection to punch out. Tiffany is a creative visionary, and her passion is transformation. Tiffany has a deep faith and loves “transforming the worn-out and damaged into the beautiful and restored, just like Jesus does with our lives”.

Tiffany Young & Crew is a company that was born out of necessity. After doing a few remodels of her own and struggling to fl ip houses, Tiffany realized there was a lot of frustration associated with finding dependable contractors. Reliability, honesty and true craftsmanship was severely lacking. With 2 sons heading off to college, the need for a second income was prudent. Tiffany saw a need in the industry and decided to capitalize on her God-given talents of vision and creativity. Being reliable, providing excellent craftsmanship and being completely transparent is at the core of her business. Some of her unique business practices include:

• Utilizing crews that work exclusively for Tiffany Young & Crew, allowing more control over scheduling and quality.

• Exclusively using licensed tradespeople, including electricians and plumbers.

• Complimentary design services for her clients.

“To be invited into someone’s home and help them create beautiful spaces is a high honor that I take very seriously. To give our very best effort to every client, every single time and leave them with more than they expected is our goal, and it is what drives me every day,” Tiffany said.

20 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | may 2024 ON THE COVER

Tiffany Young & Crew’s primary goal is to exceed the expectations of their clients. They attribute a large part of their success to the countless referrals they receive from satisfied clients. “Tiffany walked through every step with me and was the visionary that I couldn’t be,” said Valerie, a former client. “Her crew is wonderful and are very hard working and conscientious about taking care of your home.” I also can’t rave enough about the customer service they provide months/years after they have completed the job."

While Tiffany is the founder and visionary for the business, she has surrounded herself with incredibly knowledgeable and experienced people. She is supported by her father and business partner, Mike Hanner, who keeps all things in order. “My dad is someone I have always admired. I have learned so much from him, and now I am so blessed today to have him as a partner in my business,” Tiffany said. “He keeps everything organized behind the scenes so I can fully focus on serving our clients.”

Other talent on Tiffany’s team includes Stephen Dedwylder as Vice President and Zack Nixon and Jay Matthews as Project Managers. Tiffany also gains insight from her husband, Clint Young. Clint is a certified Master Builder with a degree in Construction Management and has over 29 years of experience in the construction industry. “He is my fi rst phone call if I ever get stumped." Tiffany said.

“To be invited into someone’s home and help them create beautiful spaces is a high honor that I take very seriously. To give our very best effort to every client, every single time and leave them with more than they expected is our goal, and it is what drives me every day.”

Tiffany and her family reside in Mansfield. Tiffany and Clint have three sons. Hayden and Hunt are in college, and Hayes is in the 8 th grade. As a family, they attend Lakeside Church of Christ, where they are involved in various ministries. Tiffany and Clint love being together, and when they aren’t talking shop, they enjoy entertaining, watching football and cooking. Clint loves to cookout, and I love to cook so you can always fi nd something good to eat at our house!

Tiffany Young is a rarity in this world and in her industry. Unlike most, she is not driven by money, and she doesn’t put a lot of stock into material things. Her motivation comes from helping others and creating beautiful spaces. Whatever your construction or remodel needs may be, Tiffany and her team are ready to assist you in bringing your vision to life and making your space truly special.

Exploring STEM, Robotics, Engineering, and More

The Girl Scouts have been around as long as traffic lights, electric blankets, and zippers.

In fact, all four came into the world in the year 1912. That was the year Juliette (Daisy) Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop in Savannah, Georgia. She began with 18 girls and the idea of helping them “unlock their full potential, find lifelong friends, and make the world a better place.” Over the next 112 years, Girl Scouts did their part for the war effort, helped break down racial barriers, combatted environmental issues, and tackled problems like illiteracy, drug abuse, and child abuse while still promoting traditional outdoor activities.

24 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | may 2024

Recent decades have seen continued efforts in all these arenas and a new emphasis on STEM subjects, including robotics and space science. Embracing these additions, the Girl Scouts introduced 30 new badges girls can earn in various STEM and environmental areas. The organization’s website, GirlScouts. org, promises, “New programming will prepare girls to address some of society’s most pressing needs through hands-on learning in cybersecurity, environmental advocacy, mechanical engineering, robotics, computer science, and space exploration.”

That’s good news for girls interested in technology and science. It’s great news for industries that can benefit from increased female representation. Focus on cybersecurity, space science, and mechanical engineering begins as young as kindergarten and continues with junior Girl Scouts (girls in fourth and fifth grade) earning badges in mechanical engineering for designing cranes, balloon-powered cars, and more as they absorb lessons in

buoyancy, energy, machines, and jet propulsion.

Sixth through 12th graders work toward badges in robotics and environmental stewardship. While nature stewardship has been part of Girl Scouts since its inception, the new environmental badge is designed to mobilize girls to be “advocates who address problems, find solutions, and take leadership roles to protect the earth.” Troops are even helping 11th and 12th-grade girls navigate the college admission and financial aid process.

Introducing the

Girl Scout Journey

In addition to badges, sixth through 12th-grade girls team up with friends in what’s called a “journey” to identify problems in their community and world, brainstorm solutions, develop a team plan, and put their plan into action. Examples of “journeys” are

In addition to lessons in STEM, today’s Girl Scouts are also learning about car maintenance, woodworking, politics, money management, first aid, fitness, fine and performing arts, entrepreneurism, and more.

“Think Like a Programmer,” which teaches girls problemsolving through computational thinking, helping them prepare for careers in cybersecurity, computer science, and robotics. The “Think Like an Engineer” journey involves girls engaging in hands-on design projects, teaching them how engineers think through problems and create solutions.

Women have made huge strides in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology since Girl Scouts first came on the scene in 1912. However, females are still significantly underrepresented in all these industries. These new Girl Scout programs, with their emphasis on real-world problems and solutions, promise to help girls interested in science and technology establish equal footing with men and position themselves to make a real difference in health, education, the economy, the environment, and more.

STEM Stats

Statistics from the National Science Foundation show that women make up just 29% of the science and engineering workforce.

Currently, women represent only:

• 35.2% of chemists

• 11.1% of physicists and astronomers

• 33.8% of environmental engineers

• 22.7% of chemical engineers

• 17.5% of civil, architectural, and sanitary engineers

• 17.1% of industrial engineers

• 10.7% of electrical or computer hardware engineers

• 7.9% of mechanical engineers

With the Girl Scouts’ new emphasis on STEM education, we can soon hope to see a more balanced gender demographic.

DR. TOMI OLA-PETERS

Dr. Tomi Ola-Peters has always dreamed of starting her own, private medical practice. She enjoyed her time at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, enjoyed caring for the patients there and forging lifelong friendships with her coworkers. She loved the community and excellent schools surrounding the hospital. Yet, she longed for a time when she could really slow things down, get to know her patients, and truly become their wellness partner.

“I have a passion for empowering my patients, educating them to make savvy lifestyle choices,” Dr. Ola-Peters said. “That kind of partnership takes time.” Now, that she has her own practice, DivineTouch Medical Center, she’s able to place that emphasis on patient relationships, education, and empowerment.

“I want to understand each patient’s priorities, goals, and challenges and truly make an impact on their lives,” Dr. Ola-Peters said. “While I loved my seven years as a hospital physician, I frequently offered services to patients then never saw them again.” Today, Dr. Ola-Peters is forging

deeper patient/doctor relationship offering holistic and preventive care, wellness testing, chronic-disease management, and medical weight loss as well as sick care.

“I want to walk alongside my patients as they embrace a healthier lifestyle and practice self-care for improved well-being,” Dr. Ola-Peters said. At her internal-medicine primary-care clinic she integrates lifestyle changes into the prevention, treatment, and management of chronic conditions, working in collaboration with patients creating and executing customized wellness plans that enhance their quality of life. It’s proactive health management that’s easily accessible, reasonably priced, and convenient—but first and foremost it’s compassionate.

Dr. Ola-Peters considers it a privilege to serve her patients and community as their primary care physician. “I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to serve my community, and I’m excited about what He has in store for me in the coming years,” she said. If you’re in need of a primary care doctor, you can contact DivineTouch Medical Center at (682) 422-9950 for sick visits, preventive care, physical exams, wellness test, allergy treatments, chronic disease management, and weight management.

Dr. Ola-Peters is a board-certified internal medicine physician. She completed her postgraduate certificate in public health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth and an internal medicine residency at The University of Tyler Health Science Center. She worked in outpatient and inpatient medical centers at Good Shepherd Medical Center Longview, John Peter Smith Hospital, and Methodist Mansfield Medical Center. Now at her private practice, she combines 16 years of medical experience with a compassionate “bedside manner” and a friendly, family-like rapport with her patients. When not on the job, Dr. Ola-Peters enjoys gardening, music, and spending time with family. She also serves as an adjunct associate professor at the TCU School of Medicine mentoring the next generation of healthcare providers and volunteers in the children’s ministry at her church. GET READY FOR GRADUATION: PARTY IDEAS, GIFTS, AND MORE

ue up “Pomp and Circumstance” on the playlist: Graduation season is upon us. Whether your graduate is donning a cap and gown for high school, college, or graduate school, they deserve a celebration in honor of their achievement. What can you do to mark the momentous occasion? Read on. We’re sharing a few ideas that can help you raise a toast to your grad and show them just how proud of them you are. Let’s get the party started!

Determine your party budget. You can host a party your grad will be proud to share on TikTok — and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The average graduation party price tag is about $1,000 for a guest list of 60 people. You can keep things more intimate — and cost-effective — by inviting just close friends and family. Ask the grad who they’d like to invite and go from there.

Decide on the décor. Think about what your grad likes best and personalize the celebration to their interests. If your high school grad is

going on to a university, mark the occasion with yard signs and banners in their new school colors. Are they playing sports in college? Incorporate their activity into the theme. You could also display photos of the grad through the years and use large balloons as photo props.

Get festive with food. Whether you’re hosting a full-blown bash or a casual open house, you can celebrate your grad with some A+ snacks. If you’re serving appetizers, just replenish the food as it’s consumed, and if you’re serving a full meal, plan to serve about a pound of food per person.

Choose a thoughtful gift. Everyone appreciates cold, hard cash, but when it’s your loved one graduating, you might want to give something more heartfelt (and that won’t get immediately spent on gas). Consider whisking your grad away for a weekend getaway, treating them to concert tickets, or showering them with personalized gifts like engraved jewelry or a custom photo book. You

could also gather some wisdom for the new grad. Ask relatives and friends to write down their best piece of advice on a slip of paper. Add all the papers to a “wisdom jar” and encourage the graduate to read when they need inspiration.

Do something unconventional. You don’t have to follow hard-and-fast rules when preparing for your grad’s big day. Think outside the box and do something different. Plant a tree to symbolize growth in their life. Surprise them with a video compilation of congratulatory messages from loved ones. Or, host a scavenger hunt that takes the grad to important places on their academic journey and culminates with a celebratory dinner or party. The key is to make it about the grad. Focus on their likes and dislikes and what would make them the happiest.

Graduation is an important milestone. You can make your grad feel extra special on their big day by incorporating personalized touches, thoughtful gifts, and creative gestures.

EULANIE LASHLEY

Texas Health Hospital Mansfield

Eulanie Lashley didn’t have to look far for role models. “When I was younger, neither of my parents had a formal education,” she said. “My mother went back to school late in life, got her GED, and went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.” Her parents modeled a strong work ethic, unshakable faith, passion for excellence, and a strong desire for their children to learn as much as they could. Eulanie also saw how her parents happily gave from the little they had to help others in need.

Growing up on an island in the Caribbean, Eulanie never dreamed she’d leave her small community. “Fortunately for me, there were those around me who dreamed of a brighter future for me,” she said. “They entered me in a scholarship competition, which I won.” This act of benevolence opened doors for Eulanie to study at Atlantic Union College and, later, Andrews University.

“During the course of my studies, I was introduced to AdventHealth and felt a strong personal alignment with their mission of ‘extending the healing ministry of Christ,’” she said. In 2007, Eulanie was awarded a finance internship at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in Kansas. This position ultimately led to full-time employment in the financial planning department at AdventHealth Orlando, where she worked as a fi nancial analyst.

Over the next 16 years, Eulanie held various leadership positions, including senior accounting manager, assistant finance director, fi nance director, chief operating offi cer at AdventHealth Winter Garden, and most recently, chief operating officer at AdventHealth Apopka. In March of this year, she was named president and chief executive offi cer for Texas Health Hospital Mansfield, a joint venture between AdventHealth and Texas Health Resources.

with the physicians and care teams to continue to grow our impact and provide exceptional care.”

Eulanie is already having an impact and forming partnerships with her team thanks to her natural authenticity and ability to connect and build relationships. “My goal is to create safe, nurturing environments where individuals are inspired to explore, collaborate and excel, not to simply fulfi ll the job requirements, but to answer our divine calling to serve and uplift each other.”

We’re expecting to see big things from this passionate and innovative leader.

“I’m someone who comes from humble beginnings but has always had big dreams,” Eulanie said. “I’m grateful that those dreams have brought me here to Texas Health Mansfield, and I’m passionate about the difference that we as healthcare professionals can make in the lives of our patients, community and teams.”

MELISSA DANCHAK, AU.D., CCC-A

Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids

Dr. Melissa Danchak is humbled by the opportunity she and her staff are given to help people hear better. "We are given the opportunity to help people reconnect to their life in so many ways. The positive quality of life differences that we have been making are humbling - it reminds us why we do what we do!"

Hearing and understanding clearly what is being said is more challenging than ever before. "So many of the environments that we are in on a daily basis have competing background noises. Even for someone with 'normal' hearing, it is challenging to understand what is being said when there is background noise present. For someone with hearing loss, hearing and understanding what is being said is one of the biggest challenges they face."

Dr. Danchak and her staff recognize that hearing loss is a very unique and personal experience. "Hearing loss makes it challenging to really engage with family members and friends in social gatherings. Each person has their own story to tell about how hearing loss has been impacting their life. Personally, I've been helping people hear better for over 24 years. It's exciting, and emotional. When someone wears hearing aids for the fi rst time, they almost immediately realize that they can reconnect to the important people in their life. They realize just how much they've been missing.”

Although hearing loss is a natural part of the aging process, the signs are not always obvious. "Because hearing loss isn't as noticeable as blurry vision or a toothache, it's understandable that people deny that they may need to get their ears and hearing checked. However, hearing well is an essential part of everyday life - using the phone, communicating with friends, family, and coworkers, and understanding important medical discussions. Regardless of age, we all depend on our ears and our hearing."

Your better hearing experience begins with a discussion about your unique and personal hearing challenges. A hearing evaluation is then conducted and, if appropriate, a live listening demonstration with hearing devices will be provided. Dr. Danchak and her staff understand that investing in better hearing is not just about technology. "Our Complete Hearing Health Care program includes all of the services people need to be successful with their investment in better hearing, including free batteries for the lifetime of the devices!" The long-term relationships Kos/Danchak Audiology forms with their patient's, and their family members, is just one reason they have earned over 300 fi ve-star reviews on Google, Facebook,

MANDY COTTEN, DNP, APRN, FNP-C

Institute for Hormonal Balance

A leading woman is defined by her dedication and impact. Mandy Cotten, family nurse practitioner, has embodied this by helping her patients feel better and live more empowered lives. Her passion for health and the well-being of her patients is evident in her care. As we age, many things slow down. One of those is hormone production. For women, that means our estrogen, testosterone and progesterone levels decline leading to unpleasant symptoms, such as night sweats and mood swings. Mandy has come to the aid of thousands of her patients— male and female—by educating them about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and how it can restore their vitality and wellness. At her Institute for Hormonal Balance, she’s spent years helping her patients live happier and age healthier with this revolutionary treatment.

“BHRT can be used to restore the normal level of hormones in your body when they’ve plummeted or are out of balance,” Mandy said. “Without proper hormone levels, your body deteriorates, which can lead to other problems such as osteoporosis and hearty disease because BHRT closely matches the chemical makeup of our own natural hormones, it can help decrease symptoms quickly and allows for a seamless transition as it restores your vitality and wellness.”

THE PROBLEM

Reduced hormones in women can cause vaginal dryness, loss of sex drive, painful intercourse, urinary incontinence, memory problems, dry skin, hair loss, insomnia, weight gain, and depression. Low testosterone levels in men can manifest as low energy, loss of sex drive, erectile dysfunction (ED), loss of muscle mass, weight gain, insomnia, diffi culty concentrating, and mood changes.

THE SOLUTION

Because BHRT mimics your own natural hormones, it enters your body, goes directly

to the receptor site, and alleviates these symptoms. With this therapy, Mandy’s patients have experienced balanced moods, improved sleep, reduced brain fog, decreased hot fl ashes, decreased vaginal dryness, increased stamina, increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, and increased libido, typically noticing an improvement in seven-to-10 days. Mandy can tailor BHRT to your specifi c needs and administer it through your choice of creams, patches, pills, or pellets. “We recommend pellets because they maintain balance by delivering a steady flow of hormones,” Mandy said. She has performed over 30,000 pellet procedures—averaging 500 a month.

Mandy Cotten completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology, her Bachelor of Science of Nursing (BSN) both from Texas Christian University, her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Loyola University in New Orleans, and is certifi ed through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). DONNA SMIEDT, ATTORNEY

The Family Law Firm of Donna J.

Few of us think about divorce on our wedding day. As we repeat those fateful words “for better or worse” we never imagine that “worse” will happen to us. Yet, no matter how hard you try things can fall apart. When it does, you need an experienced family-law attorney ready to help you navigate this difficult journey with as little collateral damage as possible.

For hundreds of your Tarrant County neighbors, that attorney is Donna Smiedt. If fact, they named her “Top Family Law Attorney”. Whether you need qualifi ed legal counsel on inheritance, divorce, child custody, family member rights, or any other area of family law, Donna and her team give the same attention to detail to the smallest, uncontested divorce or will as they do a multimillion- dollar, complex estate division. And few attorneys in this area possess the litigation experience and family law expertise she does.

“I have almost 40 years ‘experience representing families going through all types of divorces—many of which include tracing complex separate property estates,” Donna said. “These cases require the knowledge and expertise of a boardcertified litigation lawyer experienced in their fi eld.”

Many of Donna’s clients are facing family law issues for the fi rst time. “The ‘win’ doesn’t mean much, if the family is fractured and the children destroyed by the wars fought in family court,” Donna said. “By strategizing and guiding my client through the family law system I can maximize a favorable outcome—not only for the client I represent, but the entire family unit.” Donna brings to the table her decades of trial experience litigating and winning and managing high confl ict custody cases, achieving the best outcome for her clients, their children, and the entire family unit.

Donna graduated high school at age 15, a year after moving to the United States

from South Africa. By age 19, she’d earned her undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and became one of Southern Methodist University School of Law’s youngest graduates in history, fi nishing her law degree at 22.

Donna credits her passion for helping clients move through troubled times to the fact that she fully believes in the importance of the work she does. She takes pride in offering her clients a safe and understanding system of support as well as effective legal solutions.

It’s no wonder Donna has been named Family Law Attorney of the Year in Arlington and was voted Top Family Law Attorney in Fort Worth by her peers. “Our

family law center exists to provide families with a variety of options, at one of the most diffi cult times of their lives, when emotions run high,” Donna said. “We are the calm voice of advice, tempered with empathy for their situation, guiding them from the dark to the light in their divorce or custody experience.”

TERRI BAUER

Mansfield Family Dentistry

Terri Bauer feels blessed every single day. She not only gets to spend her workdays with her best friend, husband, and business partner, Dr. John Bauer, but with their son, Dr. Cody Bauer. She’s able to work in the challenging and ever-changing medical fi eld that keeps her on her toes as offi ce technology advances. She gets to forge lifelong friendships with generations of Mansfield families as her family meets their oral-health needs and work with a medical team that has become like family to her.

Outside of the office, Terri is blessed to be a mother to outstanding grown kids and grandmother to amazing grandchildren. And she enjoys an exciting hobby of cutting horses and mentoring young cutting-horse riders. Life for Terri is full and fulfi lling. That life began with parents she says taught her the value of hard work, the value of a dollar, and the value of giving to those in need. “My parents encouraged me to be a giver—not a taker,” she said. “They taught me to never stop learning, never stop serving others, and never stop feeling grateful for what I have.”

It’s that intentional spirit of gratitude she takes with her throughout her day and it leads her thoughts, words, and deeds. “My goal always is to ‘let go and let God’, to follow the spiritual path He’s ordained for me; to give to others and help them fi nd their own spiritual path; to remember life is a journey and to enjoy that journey; to be a good example to my children as they begin their own journey, and to give my true self to my life partner and soulmate, John.”

Whether she’s spending quality time with her large and growing family or working side by side with Dr. John and Dr. Cody at Mansfield Family Dentistry, those who know Terri can attest that she doesn’t stray far from the principles she’s laid out for herself. She truly walks the walk and talks the talk of a Christian woman.

For 40-plus years, Mansfield Family Dentistry has focused on building relationships, treating people with respect, and making patients feel like

DIANE BLAISING AUD, ADA, ABA, FAAA

Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids, Inc.

It should have been no surprise to Diane Blaising’s family when she found her calling helping others live a better life through improved hearing. Way back in elementary school, it was a young Diane who wowed her classmates with a science project demonstrating bone conduction hearing. “This was back when we had portable record players,” she said. “I took the record player to school and instead of using the needle on the record, I had a sewing needle stuck into a pencil eraser. We’d hold the wooden end of the pencil between our teeth and place the needle on the turning record and could hear the record through our teeth and bones in our skulls. It’s not coming through your ear canals. It’s bone conduction hearing.”

The workings of the human auditory system haven’t ceased to amaze Diane. Now as a board-certified doctor of audiology, she’s discovered she likes the human side of audiology even more than the medical/ science side. “I love the patient contact and making a difference in the lives of my patients the most,” she said.

After more than 32 years serving as an audiologist, the last 20 with her own practice, Dr. Blaising sees herself as a source for total hearing care. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing,” she said. “I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients. For instance, we offer a free aural rehab class for anyone who wants to learn coping strategies for people with hearing loss and their families. Sometimes family members need a little education about how to communicate with the one with hearing difficulties.”

Dr. Blaising says she has the best staff on the planet. “They join me in my mission to help our patients obtain a better quality of life by enhancing their ability to communicate with their families and friends, for deeper, more meaningful relationships,” she said. “We love helping working men and women be more successful in their careers.

Sometimes people are bothered by ringing in their ears. That is called Tinnitus. We often can evaluate what is going on and offer treatments to help. We live in a time when hearing aid technology is extremely sophisticated and we have the ability to treat any hearing loss successfully. Every patient is different. So we stay abreast of advancements in the programming software that allows us to correctly fit hearing instruments to each patient we see.”

Dr. Diane Blaising began her career in audiology in 1992. She received her doctor of audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences and her master’s degree in audiology from the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. She

has years of experience working with hearing-impaired adults and children in otolaryngologists’ offices in Louisville and as a pediatric audiologist at the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Dr. Blaising is board certified in audiology by the American Board of Audiology and has twice been given the Ace Award for continuing education. She and her husband attend First Baptist Church in Dallas and Dr. Blaising is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association. Visit Find out more at CityviewHearing.com.

MICHELE ROSS

Ross Wealth Group

Michele Ross has a favorite quote. It’s from motivational speaker and author, Zig Zigler, “Live in such a way that if someone should speak badly of you, no one would believe it.” That principal guides Michele’s days and her work at Ross Wealth Group. She was also greatly infl uenced by a mother who “walks the walk” of a solid work ethic.

“I grew up in a single-parent home,” Michele said. “Mom worked three or four jobs to make sure my sister and I had everything we needed. She taught us that circumstances don’t control the outcome of your life. You do! From her I learned that, through hard work and dedication, you can become everything that you want to be. At 81 now, Mom is still working in Dallas, selling real estate, and impacting lives.”

Michele began her career in the mortgage industry where she worked in various positions for 17 years. When she and her husband, Russ, started their family, she was blessed to stay home as a full-time mom. “I wouldn’t trade those years for anything,” Michele said.

In 2001, she and Russ became licensed representatives and insurance producers and began building their business out of their home. They worked primarily with educators, assisting them with saving and preparing for their future retirement. The firm grew through word-of-mouth recommendations. Now in their 24th year, they have clients from all walks of life.

“The biggest blessing for us have been the connections we form with the families we serve,” Michele said. “We’re intentional about making our clients feel like extended members of our family.” One way they do this is through a proprietary planning process they call, Ross Wealth Financial Flight Plan that addresses five major areas, offering their clients a comprehensive solution for their retirement and beyond.

“I realize now that my two greatest accomplishments in life are our children”, Michele said. “But when they started college, I realized I didn’t know who I was besides

their mom. I went through a difficult period trying to figure out my new purpose. Over time, I realized I needed to go back into our business full-time. Now, as the Director of First Impressions, I’m the fi rst point of contact for anyone calling our office, and I can begin showing them how different we are from that fi rst conversation. We begin building our relationship from our fi rst contact.”

When not on the job, Michele enjoys traveling with Russ and spending as much time as she can with her recently widowed mother. She also loves a good estates sale or antique mall.

“Russ and I believe that everyone deserves a financial home where they’re treated

SARAH DUKE Destiny Voice & Music Studio

It never ceases to amaze Sarah Duke how her life can be redirected—in the best ways. Growing up with a mom who was forever singing and playing the piano, a life in the musical arts seemed like a foregone conclusion. But it wasn’t until a diagnosis of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 23 that motivated her to move back home to Mansfield that she was able to live out that destiny.

The ink had barely dried on Sarah’s Commercial Music diploma from Belmont University in Nashville when she found herself back in her hometown gratefully in remission of her cancer and contemplating her next steps.

“In 2009, I accidentally started Destiny Studio in a spare bedroom in my mom’s home, just trying to fi gure out what to do with my life,” she said. In God's providential way, Sarah says one “next right thing” led to another and more than 15 years later, she is founder and owner of two thriving music studios teaching voice, piano, guitar, drums, ukulele, and early childhood music. Of course, she and her team do so much more.

“We specialize in cultivating confi dence in singers and musicians of all ages and levels of experience, developing the whole person - far beyond musical abilities,” Sarah said. They do this through meaningful and lasting relationships with their clients.

Over the last 15 years, Sarah amassed a dynamic faculty of 20 coaches and has worked with hundreds of singers with varying experience levels and genresfrom pop to R&B to worship to Disney and musical theatre. “Confidence changes people and people change the world,” Sarah said. “I believe with all my heart that we’re training up world changers ... one lesson at a time.”

“Our retention for staff is very high. We have coaches who’ve been with us nearly 10 years and all hold degrees in music and/ or work as professional musicians,” Sarah said. “You won’t fi nd more passionate and qualifi ed mentors anywhere.”

“We specialize in cultivating confidence in singers and musicians of all ages and levels of experience, developing the whole person - far beyond musical abilities. We do this by building meaningful and lasting relationships with our clients.”

Looking back, Sarah knows she owes her own success to her family and mentors.

“My Mansfield High choir teacher, Asa Low, encouraged and inspired me to pursue music professionally,” she said. “He told me, ‘Sarah, you can do anything you want to do’. And I believed him!" Her husband, Chad, is her biggest cheerleader today. He continues to believe in and support even her wildest dreams.

When not on the job, Sarah’s highest calling is as mom to Sadie, Sophia, and Tate—and bonus mom to Tucker. A close second is helping people recognize their God-given gifts and walk confi dently in

the direction of their dreams. She and her husband are also active members of Life Church Mansfi eld where she works with 4th-6th graders.

MISTY CARRILLO

101 Beauty

She brings out the beauty in others. Call it a talent. “I know the Lord Almighty did not give me this gift to just keep it to myself,” said Misty Carrillo. “It’s also to help inspire and encourage [grieving] women, showing them that life can go on.” On the cusp of opening 101 Beauty MUA Academy and 101 Beauty Studio, an eyelash-extension suite, the Dallasbased makeup artist and lash instructor reflected on her path.

MAKEUP MAVEN

Blessed with an early passion for glam, Misty often asked to do her mom’s makeup as a child. Her mother would run errands in the looks, beaming with pride. “She had the biggest heart,” said Misty. Today, the MUA has real skill and she’s debuting her makeup academy this June, during her birthday month. Misty will also create a hub for eyelash extensions — which she instructs in — for budding artists and businesswomen.

Essential lessons at the academy will cover skin prep “to make sure the outcome is 100% gorgeous.” Spoiler: Exfoliating facials followed by an appropriate facial moisturizer are key. Students will learn to check for an oil or water base before mixing foundations, and that doing the same when coordinating foundation to primer avoids cakiness. But these are only the tip of the iceberg, and Misty is excited to share her wealth of knowledge.

FAITHFUL

The eldest daughter born to a family in the Rio Grande Valley, Misty was taught to value a traditional career path and tried to live by those strictures. Though she was sought out as a makeup artist among her peers, she pursued education to instruct in visual art instead. Later recognized as the best makeup artist of her 2014 Ogle cosmetology class, she graduated and cut hair. After taking on just a few makeup clients, tragedy derailed her.

In a devastating turn of events, Misty’s mother was diagnosed with early-onset

“My faith and trust in Christ is what also got me through it all. He always spoke to my heart and encouraged me. Our stories are testimonies that Jesus' love never fails us. That the same love He gives us, we need to give back to our community.”

Alzheimer’s, but after she passed away, death struck again just nine months later. When Misty’s teenage son lost his life in a car accident, Misty sank into depression. Down but not defeated, she found strength in her beliefs. “My faith and trust in Christ is what also got me through it all,” she said. “He always spoke to my heart and encouraged me.” Buoyed also by her mother’s memory, she remembers how the simple act of applying lip gloss became one of the first physical steps she could muster as she broke through the ocean of sorrow she’d almost drowned in.

Starting fresh, Misty moved towards the field of lash application, discovering a passion. Her students, however, began asking Misty to do their makeup for headshots and special events. Prompted

once more to renew the pursuit of her talent as an MUA, she hasn’t looked back since. “Our stories are testimonies that Jesus' love never fails us. That the same love He gives us, we need to give back to our community,” she said. Through her work, she does just that.

CAITLIN TESCH, LCSW-S Connections Wellness Group

Caitlin Tesch always knew she wanted to work in a helping profession. She considered careers in law and criminal justice. But ultimately, when it came time to choose a college major, she felt pulled toward sociology for undergrad and social work for her master’s. “Like most people, I’ve had my own struggles with mental health,” Caitlin said. “I wanted to be able to help others the way I was helped.”

Now, as executive director of a Connections Wellness Group location, she’s doing just that. “The beginning of the pandemic saw a marked increase in the need for mental health services,” she said. “We were already positioned to help clients who were dealing with something even adults were struggling with.”

Connections Wellness Group is a private practice for psychiatry and counseling focused on treating adults and adolescents offering mental health and dual diagnosis partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP). Their treatment options include:

• PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION AND MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

• GROUP THERAPY

• EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES

• FAMILY SUPPORT

• ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION AND SCHOOL SUPPORT

• CASE MANAGEMENT

• AFTERCARE PLANNING

Mental health has grown to be an increasingly serious issue in recent years. Even with increasing awareness and resources, many communities still lack the services to address mental health concerns. Because mental health forms the foundation on which every other aspect of life rests, Connections Wellness Group has locations in Frisco, Plano, Denton, Flower Mound, Arlington, Keller, Mansfield, McKinney, Plano, Prosper, Rockwall, Southlake, and Willow Park.

Sometimes a client needs more support than once-a-week therapy can provide, or they may experience a crisis in their lives requiring hospitalization. When they do, they can receive care in the hospital and then continue that care with Connections Wellness Group in Arlington in a PHP program that runs Monday through Friday

from 9 AM to 1 PM or 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM and eventually transition back into weekly or biweekly therapy.

“We want people to know that we genuinely care about our patients and want to see them succeed,” Caitlin said. “We understand that coming to a facility like ours can be scary at fi rst. Patients come to us during a vulnerable time in their lives. We want to make it the best experience we can. Our greatest desire is to see our patients better themselves, meet their mentalhealth goals, and succeed in life.”

As director, Caitlin loves that she’s able to divide her time between directly engaging with patients and working to support her staff, making sure they have the resources they need to be successful and to provide the best care to their patients. “But I love that I can jump in and help with patients, when I’m needed,” she said. When not on the job, Caitlin stays busy doing life with her two wonderful children ages four and one and a half. She loves attending professional sporting events. She’s an ardent Cubs fan and stays active in two different book clubs.

FOSTERING Fitness

Inspiring Kids to Get Excited About Physical Activity

Kids who are physically active tend to be healthier and happier than their less-active peers. They typically get better grades in school, find it easier to concentrate, and report higher levels of self-confidence. Kids need at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity, but in today’s digital age, getting them away from their screens can seem like a monumental task.

With some creativity, you can inspire your kids to embrace physical activity and make it a fun and enjoyable part of their daily routine. Consider this your no-nagging guide to getting kids excited about exercise.

Show them how it’s done. Want your kids to be more active? Lead by example. Go for a family walk after dinner, or let your kids see you practice yoga or lift weights. Kids often emulate their parent’s behavior, so prioritize physical activity in your own life to be a healthy role model.

Establish family fitness traditions. You could kick off each month with a hike around a local lake or register for the same 5K every year. By making physical

activity something you do together, you’ll create shared experiences and form closer bonds.

Offer some variety. Ask your kids what sports or recreational activities they’d like to try. You might be able to sign up for a free trial class for activities like gymnastics and martial arts. Let your kids try different things and encourage them to pursue what they really like.

Get outdoors. Encourage your kids to soak up the sunshine while being active outside. Go for a bike ride together or plan a hike where kids can climb and play freely. Check out local lakes for water activities like stand-up paddleboarding to keep things interesting.

Make physical activity fun. Exercise shouldn’t feel like a chore. You can make it more entertaining and engaging for kids by turning it into a game. Try setting up an obstacle course with household items like laundry baskets and pillows. Create a scavenger hunt in the backyard or organize a relay race at your neighborhood park.

Tout all the benefits. Exercising makes

“ Exercise has multiple benefits, both physical and emotional. In the orthopedic world, we encourage activity that helps keep both the body and the mind sharp. It is also important to remember that children are not just little adults. Their skeletal systems are not fully mature. In today’s environment of yearround sports, this can create overuse injuries and syndrome. We strongly recommend the concept of periodization. This idea is to change activities frequently to prevent undo stress in one particular area. A common place we see these overuse injuries is in shoulder and elbow problems from throwing sports year-round. Make a concerted attempt to change activities to avoid problems of overuse. Remember that rest and recovery are equally as important as the activity. These recommendations are in an effort to keep you out of the orthopedic office. Stay active and healthy.”

you feel energized, mentally sharp, and ready to tackle the world. After a challenging run or cardio session, emphasize that endorphin-fueled rush with your kids. Shift the focus away from physical activity as an obligation and instead emphasize how good it makes you feel physically and mentally.   Set goals and celebrate achievements. Giving your kids something to work toward can inspire them to stay physically active. Depending on their age, you could challenge them to run a mile in a certain amount of time or complete a set number of push-ups with proper form. When kids reach a new milestone, celebrate their accomplishment with a special outing or small reward, like getting an extra 10 minutes before bedtime.

When kids are physically active, it’s not just about burning off extra energy — it’s about building strong bodies and healthy minds. With a little parental encouragement, you can set them on a path toward a healthy and active lifestyle.

5 LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO HELP COMBAT INCONTINENCE

Sometimes living a healthy lifestyle can feel impossible when combined with all your other responsibilities, such as working full-time, caring for family and friends, or spending time in the gym. Add dealing with an underlying health condition, and it may seem almost overwhelming.

For example, a condition such as urinary incontinence is a common problem that is often diffi cult to manage and can range from a light leak while coughing or sneezing to even greater loss of bladder control.

Almost two-thirds of U.S. women over the age of 20 will experience leaking, according to the experts at FitRight Fresh Start. While stress, aging, and obesity can cause incontinence, certain health events unique to women, such as pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, can also cause problems with the muscles and nerves that help control your bladder.

Consider these healthy lifestyle changes to help combat issues like urinary incontinence:

FOCUS ON FLUID INTAKE

While it may seem counterintuitive when dealing with certain conditions, it’s essential to hydrate appropriately. Drinking too infrequently can cause other issues like dehydration. To avoid frequent or urgent needs to urinate,

the Mayo Clinic recommends drinking smaller amounts throughout the day, such as 16 ounces with each meal and 8 ounces between meals. If you fi nd yourself waking multiple times at night to urinate, try drinking more of your fl uids in the morning and afternoon rather than in the evening, and avoid alcohol and beverages with caffeine like coffee, tea, and soda.

MAKE DIETARY MODIFICATIONS

The things you eat can have an impact on your condition — both positively and negatively. For example, alcohol, spicy foods, chocolate, artificial sweeteners, caffeinated, carbonated, and citrus beverages, and high-acid foods, like citrus and tomatoes, may contribute to bladder irritation, according to the National Institutes of Health. On the other hand, consider incorporating blueberries, green beans, cauliflower, winter squash, sea bass, eggs or egg whites, whole grains, and nuts, which are considered good for bladder health.

MANAGE BLADDER LEAKS

Changing day-to-day habits may improve bladder control, but for those with leaks, it’s important to manage the condition rather than letting it disrupt or defi ne them. One way to do that is to choose products that allow you to live life to the fullest.

For example, created for women by women, FitRight Fresh Start offers a

“Have you considered medical treatments? Find an office that offers non-invasive physical therapy for incontinence and is covered by most insurance companies. EMSELLA incontinence therapy uses magnetic energy to force the pelvic floor to contract 17,000 Kegels in a 30-minute period. The results are staggering.”

range of products, including discreet underwear, surface protectors, liners, and pads that fit close to your body and smoothly under your clothes.

However, there are also medical treatments for incontinence, like EMSELLA, a non-invasive physical therapy that uses magnetic energy to force the pelvic fl oor to contract 17,000 Kegels in a 30-minute period and it can be covered by most insurance companies.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT

AND STAY ACTIVE

Two factors of nearly every healthy lifestyle include overall body strength and weight loss, which can be improved by increasing physical activity. Seek out exercises you enjoy so you can get physical while having fun. Aim for 30 minutes daily of low-impact activities such as brisk walking, biking, or swimming.

STOP SMOKING

As a habit that can be detrimental to overall health, smokers are also more likely to suffer more severe symptoms from a variety of conditions, according to the Mayo Clinic. For instance, heavy smokers may also develop a chronic cough, which could cause pressure on the bladder, further aggravating urinary incontinence.

THE HEALING POWER OF HERBS

Always consult with your physician before taking any kind of herbal medicine in any form. Some herbs are not recommended if you have certain pre-existing conditions and may be harmful. If you’re on medication, be sure to research and ask your doctor about any potential drug interactions with the herbs you’re considering. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding or plan on becoming pregnant, always consult your OB-GYN before starting an herbal regimen.

Herbal medicine has a long history. Archeological studies have found evidence of Neanderthals using plants as medicine 60,000 years ago. The Bible is loaded with references to leaves for healing (Ezekiel 47:12), purging with hyssop (Psalm 51:7), and oil to make your faces shine (Psalm 104:15). And what did the wise men bring the Christ Child but frankincense and myrrh, both medicinal balsams. Ayurveda, which originated in India more than 3,000 years ago, includes herbal remedies as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine.

You might be surprised to know how many plant compounds are included as active ingredients in modern-day pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs. So, while it might be trendy to dose your family with elderberry syrup for a winter immune boost or ginger tea to help settle their tummies, plants as medicine are nothing new. A medicinal or healing herb is any plant you grow in your garden, forage from the wild, or purchase that has curative value in its leaves, bark, stems, roots, seeds, or flowers (or all the above).

52 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | may 2024 wellness

Most herbalists today advocate an approach that embraces both modern scientific insights and traditional herbal wisdom. Personally, I like to think of herbs as a way to keep myself healthy, so I don’t have to “fix” anything with prescription pharmaceuticals.

Here’s a quick list of herbs I’ve incorporated into my daily life for basic wellness and balance, usually in the form of tea.

Ashwagandha can boost energy levels, decrease anxiety and stress, reduce pain, regulate blood sugar, and reduce infl ammation.

Chamomile is known for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidepressant, anti-infl ammatory, antidiabetic, and antidiarrheal properties.

Garlic has antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-infl ammatory, and cardioprotective properties, as well as regulating blood pressure, boosting the immune system, and reducing the risk of dementia.

Ginger is widely known for its anti-infl ammatory and antioxidant properties, which reduce pain and settle the tummy.

Lavender helps promote sleep, can improve memory, relieves pain, and lifts the mood. It’s also an anticonvulsant, antioxidant, anti-infl ammatory, and antimicrobial.

Saint-John’s-Wort can promote restful sleep, reduce stress and irritability, and ward off depression.

A relative of ginger, turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and is

considered an anti-infl ammatory, antibacterial, and anticancer herb that also tastes amazing.

Pine, which is rich in vitamins A, B, C, and D, has anti-infl ammatory, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and diuretic properties. It may also increase energy, detoxifies, promotes brain health, and enhances the immune system.

Of course, that’s the tip of the iceberg and just some things I take for daily wellness. There’s a whole world of herbs for helping fight infection, relieving pain, promoting healing, combatting diarrhea or constipation, treating fever, relieving cold and flu symptoms, healing wounds, addressing gastrointestinal issues, and so much more.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fi ts-all approach to herbal healing. Everybody is different, and herbs that work for your body might not work for mine. It’s important to fi nd an herbal approach that’s right for you. But with a little bit of research and guidance that includes talking with your physician, herbal medicine can be a powerful spoke in the wheel of your overall wellness.

MAY IS SKIN CANCER AND MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH

Did you know that around one in fi ve Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime and that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States? If you’re surprised by this, the following statistic may shock you. According to SkinCancer.org, more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the county than all other cancers combined.

SKIN CANCER TYPES

Skin cancer generally falls into two categories — non-melanomas, such as squamous and basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Non-melanomas are more common and usually curable, especially when diagnosed and treated early.

Melanoma is considered the deadliest form of skin cancer because it tends to spread quickly. Although it begins in the skin, melanoma can reach blood vessels and lymph systems and metastasize to other body organs. If you’re wondering where Texas fi ts into the melanoma landscape, it ranks third in the nation for newly diagnosed cases of melanoma.

WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN, LOWER YOUR RISK

Most skin cancers are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps. If you didn’t avoid overexposure or use sunscreen in the past, remember that it’s never too late to start protecting your skin. And, keep in mind that reducing exposure not only helps you minimize getting skin cancer, but it can also reduce photoaging, so you stay younger-looking longer.

Avoid tanning beds. Unfortunately, the incidence of melanoma has been increasing over the past few decades. According to the NIH, melanoma incidence in the U.S. grew more than 320% between 1975 and 2018. One of the culprits is the use of tanning beds, which increases the risk of melanoma, including early-onset melanoma.

Reduce the amount of time spent in the sun. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When outdoors, wear sunscreen and protective clothing, including long sleeves and pants whenever possible and wide-brimmed hats. Remember to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. According to the National Eye Institute, prolonged exposure to UV rays modifies lens proteins, leading to cataract formation and worsening eyesight.

Last but not least, apply a generous amount of sunscreen to all the exposed areas on the body 20 to 30 minutes

before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF).

GET REGULAR SKIN EXAMS

Regular skin examinations aid in early detection. It’s vital to check your skin for any changes, including existing moles and the development of new moles. Your dermatologist will perform a whole-body check and may use a dermatoscope— a small, lighted magnifying instrument — to better see a particular area. Some dermatologists use advanced skin cancer imaging technologies for early detection.

Between doctor visits, perform a selfskin exam. Look closely from head to toe for any suspicious moles. Ask a friend, spouse, or partner to help you check hard-to-see areas like your back. When examining a mole, apply the ABCDE criteria. These letters stand for asymmetrical, border, color, diameter, evolving. (Visit AAD.org/ public/diseases/skin-cancer/find/ at-risk/abcdes for more information.)

Be aware that “hidden” melanomas can develop in areas with typically little or no exposure to the sun. They include the spaces between the toes and on the palms, soles, scalp, and even genitals.

Skin Cancer

Myths and Facts

Myth: Tanning beds are safe.

Fact: Tanning beds emit the same harmful UV rays as the sun and in greater amounts. More than 419,00 cases each year are linked to indoor tanning, and women younger than 30 are six times more likely to develop melanoma if they tan indoors.

Myth: I need to burn before I tan. Since I tan after a burn, it’s perfectly safe.

Fact: Your risk of melanoma doubles if you’ve had more than five sunburns.

Myth: I have a darker skin tone. I can’t get sunburned.

Tips and Tricks to Selling Your Home Fast

Welcome to the world of home staging, where art meets real estate in a harmonious dance designed to sell your home faster and for a better price. Read on to explore the secrets of successful home staging and tips on transforming your space into a buyer’s dream.

An Inviting Entrance

As the saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” This adage holds particularly true in the realm of home staging. The journey begins at your front door, where curb appeal sets the stage for the entire experience. From meticulously maintained landscaping to a welcoming entryway, every detail contributes to that all-important initial impression.

Upon crossing the threshold, visitors should be greeted with a sense of spaciousness and serenity, achieved through strategic decluttering and thoughtful arrangement of furnishings. Infuse the home with scents, such as freshly baked cookies or a hint of citrus, to create a welcoming atmosphere from the moment they walk inside.

Emphasizing Unique Features

Every home boasts distinctive features waiting to be showcased like precious gems. Whether it’s a soaring cathedral ceiling, a cozy fireplace nook, or expansive windows framing panoramic views, these elements form the heart of your staging narrative. Lighting plays a pivotal role in accentuating these focal points.

For instance, highlighting a high ceiling with strategically placed pendant lights or recessed lighting can draw the eye upward, enhancing the sense of space and grandeur. Similarly, installing soft, ambient lighting around a fireplace creates a cozy ambiance that invites buyers to imagine relaxing evenings by the hearth. Utilizing adjustable lighting fixtures allows you to tailor the intensity and direction of light, effectively showcasing each unique feature in its best light.

Creating Flow and Functionality

Efficient use of space is a hallmark of effective home staging. Furniture placement should be carefully orchestrated to optimize traffic flow and highlight the functionality of each room. Multi-purpose areas, such as a dining nook within the kitchen or a cozy reading corner in the living room, add versatility and appeal.

Depersonalize to Enhance the Buyer’s Vision

Removing personal items such as family photos and highly specific decor choices helps neutralize the environment, allowing buyers to project their identities onto the home.

Neutralizing the space extends beyond decor to include lifestyle elements. Clearing out excessive clutter, streamlining furniture arrangements, and minimizing personalized touches like monogrammed towels or themed rooms all contribute to this depersonalization. The goal is to create a universally appealing environment that resonates with a broad spectrum of buyers, regardless of their individual tastes and preferences.

The Symphony of Staging Accessories

Accessories are the virtuosos of staging. They harmonize with the overall theme to create a symphony of style and allure. From tasteful artwork that draws the eye to elegant throw pillows that invite relaxation, these accents add to every corner. Fresh blooms and greenery breathe life into rooms, infusing them with a touch of nature’s beauty.

By embracing the art of home staging and implementing these strategies, you’ll not only enhance the appeal of your home but also increase its market desirability and potential for a swift, successful sale.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

When it comes to home staging, certain rooms hold more influence in the eyes of potential buyers. These focal points can significantly affect their perception of the entire property. Let’s take a closer look at each of these key rooms and explore the strategies to maximize their impact.

Living Room: As the heart of the home, the living room sets the tone for the overall ambiance. Create inviting conversation areas by arranging furniture in a cohesive layout that encourages social interaction. Incorporate a mix of textures and colors through throw pillows, area rugs, and draperies to add depth and warmth. A strategically placed accent chair or a stylish coffee table can anchor the space and create a focal point.

Kitchen: The kitchen is often a make- or-break area for buyers. To showcase its full potential, declutter countertops and cabinets to create a sense of spaciousness. Invest in modern appliances and consider minor upgrades, such as replacing hardware or updating lighting fixtures, to enhance functionality and aesthetics. Adding a touch of greenery with potted herbs or a bowl of fresh fruits can evoke a sense of freshness and vitality.

Primary Bedroom: Transform the

primary bedroom into a tranquil retreat that promises restful nights and rejuvenating mornings. Opt for luxurious bedding with layers of soft textures and soothing colors. Arrange furniture to optimize flow and highlight architectural features like a bay window or a cozy reading nook. Incorporate subtle lighting elements like bedside lamps or wall sconces to create an intimate atmosphere.

Bathroom(s): Cleanliness an modernity are paramount in bathrooms. Ensure that surfaces gleam with cleanliness and replace worn-out fixtures or outdated tiles if necessary. Invest in quality towels and bath linens to evoke a spa-like experience. Consider adding decorative touches like a stylish vanity mirror or a statement piece of artwork to elevate the overall aesthetic appeal.

Outdoor Spaces: Don’t overlook the potential of outdoor areas in influencing buyers’ perceptions. Stage your patio or deck with comfortable outdoor furniture arranged in an inviting manner. Incorporate potted plants, hanging baskets, or a small herb garden to add a touch of greenery and create a connection with nature. Install outdoor lighting to showcase the space’s versatility for daytime relaxation and evening entertainment.

A HOME RUN home office

CREATING A PRODUCTIVE AND INSPIRING WORKPLACE

Planning a home office that is aesthetically pleasing and conducive to getting things done takes some planning and creativity. However, the payoff is worth the effort for a place you spend up to eight hours a day occupying.

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE

Functionality is key, so you want to address your floor plan and storage needs fi rst. Think of the things you need regular, easy access to, such as a printer, binders, samples (for instance, if you are an interior designer), etc. You can create storage from built-ins, bookshelves, or my favorite, an armoire. An armoire is a great way to create storage while giving your office character. I keep my printer, fi le folders, backup ink, and all kinds of offi ce supplies in mine.

MEETING OF THE MINDS

Next, consider your view and lighting and how that will affect your computer and, in the mobile work age, how you’ll look on your Zoom calls. If you prefer to have your desk look out of the room and not towards a window, make sure there

isn’t going to be a glare on your computer. If you do have glare, you can address that with window treatments. So don’t fret, just make sure to incorporate that into your plan. Also, think about having a separate seating area from your desk. This can be useful if you need a place to brainstorm, plan. Also, think about having a separate seating area from your desk. This can be useful if you need a place to brainstorm, take a long call, or do some work-related reading. It’s nice to have that option, and it also gives you a chance to use some upholstery in a room that can have a lot of hard surfaces.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION

Speaking of Zoom calls, if you are on many of these, arrange your space so that your backdrop is interesting and not distracting. This could mean some well-styled bookshelves — go to Pinterest for inspiration on how to style them — or a wallpapered wall with art and lamps. And don’t forget your lighting. Having a spot on your desk for a ring light can make all the difference. Thinking of these things in advance will mean you don’t have to fi gure out which electrical outlets you’ll be using for your computer, printing, and lighting needs because you determined this when creating your floor plan.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Once you have your layout designed, it’s time to address the aesthetics. Think about adding an area rug and window treatments. Your window treatments add interest to your room and can also be your best friend in terms of lighting. I prefer a layered window treatment that includes panels as well as an unlined woven shade. The unlined shade can shield you from glare without completely keeping the light from your room. The panels can provide full coverage if you need that. And don’t be afraid of color if that makes you happy. You can bring color in through wallpaper, window treatments, an area rug, or the upholstery in your seating area. Bring in as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Then enjoy your beautiful, well-functioning home offi ce.

MORE HOMEOWNERS ARE GETTING SMART

“The future is now” was a saying popularized by the late George Allen, a Hall of Fame coach in the NFL. That adage also best describes the evolution of the smart home. With innovations that once appeared as futuristic as landing on the moon, smart home technology has become an integral part of our lives.

In these high-tech times, Siri and Alexa are like family members. Video doorbells enable homeowners to see and communicate with someone at the door from anywhere in the house or even remotely. Did you forget to arm your security system when you left for work or an appointment? No worries — you can do that remotely as well.

You can regulate the thermostat, turn lights on and o , and using your smartphone with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, you can turn on the oven, set a timer and begin cooking dinner before you are home. And robot cleaners save us from doing the backbreaking chore of vacuuming and mopping in hard-to-reach places.

It took more than 30 years before television replaced the radio as the primary source of news and entertainment for Americans, but it seems to take just a New York minute for a new smart device to render yesterday’s technology obsolete. Remember pagers, fax machines, floppy discs, DVDs, iPods, and yes, the landline?

So, 2024 will continue to see new and improved smart home features, which will excite all the Professor Gadgets out there who love hi-tech. One advancement is Govee’s permanent outdoor lighting system (Us.govee.com). Once installed, these lights, advertised for $399, can be used for security and holiday lighting. They have hundreds of color combinations, are waterproof, and include a smart app and voice control. Nanoleaf is another company that o ers colorful permanent outdoor lighting.

The Tom’s Guide website (TomsGuide.com) features the Linxura Smart Controller for $99. This hockey puck-shaped device operates like a click wheel that can support up to

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | may 2024 64

50 smart home devices, even those on di erent platforms. Thus, you don’t have to download multiple apps to your phone.

Remember Roomba, the robot vacuum? Perhaps you still have one. The Roomba, in fact, has a place in the National Museum of American History. It became popular in the early 2000s and cost about $200. Now, let’s talk about the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra (us.RoboRock. com), which the company bills as the “most intelligent hybrid robot vacuum and mop.” The onboard computer features a voice assistant, robot arm, and advanced obstacle avoidance. It provides a live video feed of what’s going on under the bed or other toughto-clean places and allows you to make video calls. Self-cleaning, self-emptying, and self-filling, it almost makes human intervention irrelevant. The MaxV costs about $1,500, so it pays to have a big house.

Don’t stop there. LG has a SmartWash Combo — a full-size washer and dryer in one unit. It has onboard sensors to detect the size of the wash load, soil level, and type of fabrics. LG says it has a smart home platform allowing users to check the washer’s progress. All for $3,000.

Lockly Visage adds to home security with a smart lock that uses facial recognition to unlock the front door of your house. It can store up to 100 “face profiles,” although it is unlikely you will want that many people having access to your home. And Samsung sells smart refrigerators as well as smart TVs.

Just remember, today’s new technology may be old a year from now, so do a little homework on the front end to make the best choice on what hightech options to consider. Better yet, hire an expert in smart home software and products to get your home hooked up.

OLD HOMES CAN BE SMART HOMES TOO

Most new houses are smart homes, which are already wired and configured for automation. Ethernet cables are used to connect directly with smart devices. And none of this requires additional input from the homeowner. But your house doesn’t need special wiring work to become a smart home. You just add smart appliances and devices such as lights, locks, thermostats, and TVs and connect them through an Amazon Echo or Google Assistant, utilizing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A strong wireless connection is required to enable devices to respond to commands.
