“And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18
I hope, like me, you were blessed with a wonderful father. He was that one person who could make you laugh with his corny “dad jokes”. Maybe he embarrassed you, when you brought home your first date, or cried, when he gave you away on your wedding day. Maybe he taught you to change a tire and barbecue the perfect burger or read you a bedtime book and prayed with you each night. Whether you had a father who followed the Proverbs 22:6 mandate to “trained you up in the way you should go” or not, the Bible tells us God will “turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” (Malachi 4:6) The third Sunday in June is a great time for that to happen. If you’re blessed to still have your dad with you on Earth, you may be shopping for the perfect Father’s Day gift. But remember, the greatest gift you can give him is the gift of yourself. Block out some time to be together. Take him out for a meal. Plan a hike. Watch a movie. Go out on the boat. Tuck a hand-written note inside his Father’s Day card recalling a fond memory you have of him. Let’s celebrate the dads we were given and honor them the way the Lord intended. (Exodus 20:12) Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful dads out there. “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.” Psalm 103:13:

Mansfield is brimming with summer activities. Our city is ready to host the fine arts, music festivals, and a plethora of sports activities and fun events for the whole family. To begin our exciting update: We have our residents to thank for voting to approve the completion of the Walnut Creek Linear Trail. The Walnut Creek Linear Trail connects six parks, multiple neighborhoods, and business districts throughout the city. By approving this project, our already award-winning network of trails will double the length of the entire walkable trail system, adding paved scenic walkways to the city limits, including a connection to "Man's Best Field Dog Park." Included in the approved trail proposition is the Pond Branch Linear Trail. This linear trail is in Historic Downtown and currently runs from Sycamore to Pond streets. The expansion would add a trail from Pond Street to South Main Street,

Be sure to visit the calendar at ArlingtonTX.gov for a list of upcoming, family-friendly events and I hope to see y’all at some of them! We are celebrating our newest national holiday, Juneteenth. The Juneteenth weekend (June 17–June 19) is shaping up to be a weekend of fun and festivities meant to cater to people of all ages. Fresh off a bad breakup with a longtime boyfriend, Lizbet Keaton desperately seeks a second act. When she’s named the new general manager of the Hotel Nantucket, a once Gilded Age gem turned abandoned eyesore, she hopes that her local expertise and charismatic staff can win the favor of their billionaire owner as well as that of a wildly popular Instagram tastemaker who can help put them back on the map. The staff (and guests) have complicated pasts, and the hotel can’t seem to overcome the bad reputation it earned in 1922 when a tragic fire killed nineteen-year-old chambermaid Grace Hadley. With Grace haunting the halls, a staff harboring all kinds of secrets, and Lizbet’s romantic uncertainty, is the Hotel Nantucket destined for success or doom?

STANDING IN
the gap?

Years ago, when my first three children were young, I had the opportunity to step back into my old life and play the role of Maria in The Sound of Music. Before kids, amateur theatre had been my life. Now, my kids were old enough that I thought we could enjoy this adventure together. I was a fairly new Christian and a full-time mom. Why couldn’t I incorporate the theatre into a life centered around the church, my husband, and kids? The next thing I knew, I was in the limelight, singing with, dancing with, even kissing a handsome man who wasn’t my (very handsome) husband. Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t ever in danger of having an affair or even entertaining the idea. But my thought life was a different story. I’d find myself going through my kid-saturated day and suddenly thinking of something he’d said or done the night before or how it had felt when we were dancing. It never went further than that. But it certainly didn’t feel “right.” I wanted to ask a Christian friend to pray for me, but something stopped me. That something was pride. What would she think of me? Would she assume things had gone further than just stray thoughts? Would she think I was a bad Christian, a bad wife, a bad mother? Hello, pride. Hello, believing the enemy’s lies. Thank God for my friend, Cheryl, who matter-offactly mentioned over coffee one morning that she was praying for me. Without me
ever confiding in her, she’d known. She said something like, “I SAW that guy. I know how I’d be feeling. I’m standing in the gap for you.” Now, I was convicted not just for failing to “hold every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ” (Rom. 12:21) but for my pride in not being able to admit to my closest friend that I was human. That was my first experience with having someone stand in the gap for me in prayer. We finished the run of our show, and I had the time of my life, acting, singing, dancing, and connecting with the audience. My following shows were all-female casts, and I haven’t auditioned for a romantic role since. What exactly is standing in the gap, and is it Biblical? In Ezekiel 22:30, God tells the prophet, “I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.” In ancient times, cities were built with walls surrounding them to provide protection from enemies. When the wall was breached, the city was vulnerable, and citizens would risk their lives by literally standing in the gap in the wall and fighting the enemy. That’s what my friend, Cheryl, had done for me. In Jesus’ day, soldiers’ shields were equipped with brackets that could latch onto other soldiers’ shields, creating
a wall of protection. Once they were locked in this way, the soldiers could move forward as one in a barricade against the enemies’ attack. Alone I could only cower behind my single shield. But once I allowed Cheryl to latch her shield to mine, my defense doubled. And when that prayer was answered, it was a blessed for both of us. The Apostle Paul understood firsthand the power of standing in the gap. In his letter to the Roman church, he implored them to pray for him, writing, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.” (Romans 15:30). He likewise beseeched the church in Ephesus, “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains.” (Ephesians 6:19). Throughout his epistles, Paul urged his fellow believers to stand in the gap for him. In Ezekiel, God had gone looking for someone to stand in the gap and pray for sinful Jerusalem. Is He calling you to stand in the gap for someone today? If He is, why not send that person a text and let them know you’re praying for them? Or do you need someone to stand in the gap in prayer for you? Ask Him to lay that person on your heart, put your pride aside, and ASK!

P
eople don’t necessarily seek the help of the foot and ankle experts at Accent Podiatry Associates because they’re in pain. They turn to them because that pain is keeping them from the things and the people they love. They don’t make an appointment because their ankle hurts so much as because that painful ankle pain prevents them from playing tennis or golf or because beginning and ending each day with foot pain makes it hard to be the loving wife or husband, mother or father, grandmother or grandfather, brother or sister or friend they want to be.
CONSIDER THIS The average moderately active person takes about 7,500 steps a day. If that’s maintained until the age of 80, you’ll have walked about 216,262,500 steps. Congratulations! But what happens when those steps become painful. You’ll probably take fewer of them. And less exercise can negatively affect your length and quality of life. Many people write off foot and ankle pain to normal aging. Getting old and being in daily pain is just part of being human, right? The doctors at Accent Podiatry Associates have a technical term for that—BALONEY! It’s their mission to help you stride into the next decade (and the next and the next) pain-free. If your feet or ankles begin to hurt—whether from an injury, repetitive use, or a degenerative issue— the Accent

Podiatry docs consider it their blessing to offer you comprehensive and conservative foot and ankle care including: • Foot and Ankle Pain • Bunions • Heel Pain • Plantar Fasciitis • Diabetic Wound Care • Flat Feet • Neuromas • Children’s Foot Care • Hammertoes • Achilles Tendonitis
TREATING THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM— NOT MERELY THE PAIN Drs. Dharmesh Bhakta, Shae Paschal, Jacob Jasper, Parth Bhakta and Steve Silvey have dedicated their careers to understanding the intricate workings of the human foot and ankle complex. Together with their dynamic team, they spend their days looking for and treating the root cause of foot or ankle problems—not merely masking symptom but finding and addressing the source of your pain or disfunction and helping you function the way you were created to. Patients report Accent Podiatry Associates “makes you a number-one priority and ensures you’re 100% satisfied”. One very satisfied patient even wrote, “I wish my foot wasn't getting better so I’d have an excuse to keep seeing them.”
ALL UNDER ONE ROOF The doctors at Accent Podiatry offer their Tarrant County neighbors diagnosis and care for everything from simple fungal nails to complex foot surgery—all under one roof. The Accent Podiatry offices are fun places to visit, with doctors and staff who joke and laugh and remember your name. It’s easy to have that attitude, when you love what you do. It’s no wonder so many of their patients were referred by other patients—and doctors. Let the professionals at Accent Podiatry Associates help you find the root cause of your foot/ankle problems and regain your active, pain-free life again. aybe you dream of escaping to a beachfront bungalow or a cozy cabin in the mountains. Buying a second home can lead to greater fulfillment, whether you get a place in your favorite resort town or a residence close to your grandkids. A second property can also have significant financial benefits, from tax breaks to potential rental income. More people are interested in owning a second home now than before the pandemic, according to Inman, an independent news publisher for the real estate industry. More than half of Americans (55%) who don’t own a second home say they now want one, compared to just 46% who wanted a second residence before the pandemic. If you’re thinking about buying a second home for a private getaway, a retreat for your family and friends, or a way to bring in extra income, read on. We’re sharing a step-by-step process for purchasing a second property. First, Know Your Why If you’re buying a second home to rent out, look for homes in popular destinations. Buying in a desirable area can help ensure your property gets rented more often. If you’re hoping to use your second home as a weekend getaway, look at communities closer to home. Also, consider whether you value low-maintenance living over more privacy. Condos and townhomes require less upkeep, but a single-family home gives you more of your own private space.

MOVING ON FROM SKIN CANCER – MOHS SURGERY MAKES IT HAPPEN
WHAT IS “MOHS” SURGERY?
about the expert
DR. ASHISH ARSHANAPALLI
UNITED DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES
While his primary focus is skin cancer surgery and reconstruction, Ashish also enjoys general dermatology and cosmetics. He has been published in multiple medical journals involving laser therapies for scar reduction. Dr. Arshanapalli graduated at the top of his class at the Indiana University School of Medicine, then conducted his residency in Dermatology at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He completed a Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, the birthplace of Mohs surgery.
Mohs is a technique developed by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs, in which your dermatologic surgeon will remove a skin cancer, layer by layer, and microscopically examine each section. This enables total removal of the cancer while sparing your healthy skin, reducing scarring and speeding your recovery. Mohs Surgery provides the highest cure rate for removal of skin cancer – up to 99 percent for a skin cancer that has not been treated before, and up to 94 percent for a skin cancer that has recurred after previous treatments.
WHEN IS MOHS THE RIGHT TREATMENT? Mohs is the gold standard of treatment for many basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), including sensitive and critical areas around the eyes, nose, lips, ears, scalp, fingers, toes, or genitals. In these cases, removing the least tissue necessary is essential to minimize scars or limited function. We also recommend Mohs for recurring cases, or aggressive cases where BCC or SCC are large, growing rapidly, have indistinct edges. Mohs has also been successful in treating certain cases of melanoma.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING MOHS SURGERY? The surgery happens in three primary steps, all in one visit. First, the skin around the cancer will be anesthetized (numbed), and the visible skin cancer will be removed. Second, a thin layer just beyond the visible cancer will be surgically removed, processed, st a ined, a nd ex a mined microscopically. You will have a short wait
while the tissue is analyzed to confi rm we have removed all the cancer. If any cancer cells do still remain, steps one and two will be repeated. In the third step, once the skin cancer is f ully removed, your surgeon w ill recommend the best way to treat and close the wound to minimize scarring, promote healing, and speed your recovery.
WILL I NEED A SKIN GRAFT? How your wound is closed will depend on the size and location of the cancerous cells. In most instances, we can repair the wound immediately after confirming the cancer is fully removed. It may be best to leave the wound open to heal, or to close it with a few stitches. Some cases may require a reconstructive skin fl ap, where neighboring tissue is moved into the wound, or by a skin graft. Your Mohs surgeon may coordinate the repair with another specialist such as a plastic surgeon.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER MOHS SURGERY? There is usually minimal pain for a few days after surgery, and you should limit exercise and vigorous physical activity the first couple of weeks. You can expect some swelling and bruising, and even numbness around the site for up to a year. While scarring cannot be prevented, we make it a priority to minimize it. This is a defi nite benefit of Mohs Surgery.
WILL I HAVE TO RETURN FOR FOLLOW UPS? Once you have had a skin cancer, you are at a higher risk for more. So, take care of yourself by following up with your general dermatologist on a regular basis. You are worth the extra care – we want to see you healthy!

ORTHODONTIST
YOUR CHILD’S NEW SMILE
WHAT IS THE IDEAL AGE FOR BRACES? An orthodontic check-up should be done on all children at age seven. Braces usually go on at age 12, once all the permanent teeth are in. But most kids will benefit from an expander made with the new digital scanner to develop space for the permanent teeth. You can schedule a free exam with Dr. Hildebrand by calling (817)468-4141.
HOW MANY MONTHS IS A NORMAL BRACES TREATMENT? Most cases with Dr. Hildebrand take up to 15 months to get the teeth aligned and a great smile and bite. By starting early and utilizing the newest small brackets, with flexible wires and no appointments, Dr. H can give patients beautiful smiles in just 15 months. If your orthodontist is still using bands around teeth in the back, get a second opinion with someone that uses mini brackets on the outside of the teeth. The best two treatment options today are mini braces and Invisalign clear aligners. With them we can monitor your teeth movements and give you the perfect smile.
WILL BRACES INTERFERE WITH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES LIKE SPORTS, PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT, OR SINGING? No – Advances in the mini braces and wires has limited the effect they have on your child’s sports or band participation. If you’re concerned with having braces on your teeth, ask your orthodontist about Invisalign.
HOW DO I IMPROVE MY CHILD’S AIRWAY? Dr. Hildebrand will help create room for developing teeth and a better airway for children starting at age 7. By using a free digital x-ray he can diagnose and treatment plan a process that helps establish a better airway for you child and avoid the excessive crowding that leads to problems in your teens. Using the new digital scanner he is able to get the highest quality results in less time.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO BEGINNING TREATMENT? Same Day braces are a great way to get started straightening your teeth. Look for an orthodontist who allows you to start treatment the same day as your consultation, so you or your child can start treatment without missing another day of school or work.
DO BRACES HURT?
WHAT TYPE OF RETAINERS ARE AVAILABLE?
No, the new, mini braces lightly move the teeth into a straighter position which limits the soreness and some patients say they don’t feel a thing. The new f lexible wires used by Dr. Hildebrand were designed by NASA to slowly align your teeth into a perfect smile.
Find an orthodontist who offers clear retainers as well as glued-in retainers so your teeth can stay straight and beautiful after treatment. Some orthodontists don’t offer both types of retainers, so patients end up having to redo braces years later, after their teeth have begun shifting, which isn’t ideal for anyone.

ask the EXPERT HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY
THE WONDERS OF BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT
WHAT ARE BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES?
about the expert
MANDY COTTEN
MANDY COTTEN, DNP, APRN, FNP-C
Dr. Mandy Cotton APRN has performed over 25,000 pellet procedures, averaging 300 a month. As clinic coordinator at BioTE, she helps train others in the importance of hormone optimization to assist patients in achieving the highest quality of life. She’s on the clinical advisory board of BioTe, and Formula 30A and is currently involved in research to investigate the long-term benefits of hormones and the BioTE method.
Bioidentical hormones look exactly like your naturally occurring hormones. So, they can enter your body, go directly to the receptor site, and achieve the desired results. Conversely, synthetic hormones must be metabolized through the liver first where they must convert to a different hormone and sometimes can cause the opposite effect then what’s desired. Where conventional hormone therapy is often only available in one or two set doses, bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) dosage can be tailored to the individual patient’s needs. BHRT can be administered through creams, patches, pills, or pellets. Patients can contact Institute for Hormonal Balance at (817) 467-7474 or Donovitz.com to schedule a consultation and determine which is best for them.
WHY DON’T MORE PRACTITIONERS UTILIZE BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES? U n f o r t u n a t e l y, t h e r e w a s a—n o w d i s c re d it e d—s t ud y i n 2 0 02 c a l le d the Women’s Health Initiative which incorrectly indicated that hormones were dangerous for women. Due to the media’s exacerbation of this study, many providers and patients were scared away from hormone therapy—conventional or bioidentical. The primary investigators in this study have walked back their findings realizing they didn’t show bioidentical hormones to be dangerous for women. (However, synthetic progestins did increased risk for breast cancer and cardiovascular issues.) One of the primary investigators, Dr. Robert Langer has since said, “Over-generalizing the results from the women who were on average 12 years past menopause to all post-menopausal
women, has led to needless suffering and lost opportunities for many.” Many women have unduly suffered due to the overgeneralization of these fi ndings.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BHRT? Balanced mood, improved sleep, reduced br a i n fo g, de c r e a s e d hot f l a s he s , decreased vaginal dryness, increased stamina and energy, increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, increased libido, heart protection, bone protection, brain protection, and enhanced sexual response and desire.
HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT RESULTS FROM BHRT? This depends on the type of hormone therapy you’re using. Typically, you should start to notice a difference within seven to 10 days of starting a new therapy. With pellet therapy, you should notice a larger difference around the four-to-six-week mark. Sometimes adjustments to the treatment plan are needed
HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO FOLLOW UP DURING MY THERAPY? Hormone therapy is not black and white. We obtain initial lab testing, then test again four to six weeks after initiating therapy. The patient shouldn’t require labs again for another year, unless we’re adjusting their dose. Most male patients need pellet therapy every four to six months. Most female patients need pellet therapy every three to five months.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY? Pellet therapy for women is $350 every three to five months. For men it ranges between $650 and $750 every four to six months.

ask the EXPERT CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON
A PROMISING FUTURE FOR HEART PATIENTS WHAT IS A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON? A cardiothoracic surgeon is a medical doctor trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the chest, esophagus, diaphragm, heart, lungs, and trachea. A cardiothoracic surgeon completes medical school then a five-year general surgery residency followed by a two to three-year cardiothoracic surgery residency program or enter into a sixyear integrated cardiothoracic surgery residency. Some choose to do additional training in a subspecialized area.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CARDIOLOGIST AND A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON? While they play equally important roles in the care of a patient with heart disease, in general cardiologists handle diagnosis and medical treatment or nonsurgical procedures such as balloon angioplasty, coronary stents, ablation procedures, or placement of devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators. Cardiothoracic surgeons tackle more aggressive treatment such as bypass surgery and surgical valve replacement procedures. The patient generally follows up with a cardiologist once a cardiothoracic surgeon has released them. Some newer procedures involve both cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgery such as TAVR or percutaneous valve replacement procedures.
WHAT ADVANCEMENTS HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOUR FIELD? Over the past 30 years, I’ve been blessed to pioneer many minimally invasive thoracic surgery technique and technologies such as video and robot-assisted surgery of the chest, heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, and trachea. These lessinvasive procedures mean shorter recovery time, less risk of infection, negligible scarring, reduced recovery time, less blood, less pain, fewer complications, and
far greater success rates. I’ve also had the privilege of pioneering a new mechanical heart valve requiring less anticoagulation. And minimally-invasive Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) allows me access to difficult-to-reach areas of the lung, aiding in the diagnosis of lung disease and leading to earlier, personalized treatment, potentially saving lives.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER PROCEDURES YOU PERFORM? As a cardiothoracic surgeon for 30 years, I’ve performed thousands of angioplasties to restore a healthy blood fl ow to the heart, stent placement to open up narrow heart arteries, ablations to treat abnormal heart rates and rhythms, implantations of pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators to correct abnormal heart rhythms and help hearts beat more efficiently, openheart surgery to treat heart blockages in the coronar y ar teries or correct problems or defects, coronary artery bypass grafting to bypass a coronary artery that’s narrowed or blocked, heart valve repair or replacement for damaged or diseased valves, ventricular assist devices to treat heart failure, and carotid surgery to remove plaque in a carotid artery.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THESE PROCEDURES?
about the expert DARIEN W. BRADFORD, MD
METHODIST HEART AND LUNG
Board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Darien Bradford has spent 30 years as a leader in his field, pioneering many life-saving techniques, such as minimallyinvasive surgery for coronary artery disease, cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest wall, abnormalities of the great vessels and heart valves, as well as birth defects of the chest and heart.
Cardiothoracic surgeries can help open coronary arteries narrowed by fatty plaque buildup, repair weakened heart muscle or defects, or correct heart rhythm problems. Because each patient is unique, each receives highly tailored treatment in collaboration with their primary care physician, cardiologist, or other healthcare providers. With new minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgeries the risk factors involved in these procedures is greatly reduced and success rates are greatly improved. WHAT’S A GOOD AGE TO START RETIREMENT PLANNING?
about the expert
AL CLARK
STATE FARM INSURANCE
Over his 41 years as a top agent for State Farm, Al has made his mark in the company, in the lives of his clients, and in our community. Rookie of the Year his very first year, he’s placed number one out of 19,000 agents companywide and has been one of only three people who have earned Chairman’s Circle every year, including his wife Shalyn.
Start with your very fi rst job. Set aside 10% of every paycheck for saving and investing. If there are two wage earners in the household, increase the savings percent age. A lmost ever y f inancial planning course, financial planning book, and even the Bible says to save at least 10% for the future. As a teenager, I learned the rule of 72. An investment that returns an average of 12% w ill double every six years. 6 X 12 = 72. A 6% return will double every 12 years. If you have a 401K at work and they match your money, maximize that match. 100% return! Never remove your retirement money to purchase something. Keep your retirement money protected. Build the nest egg and leverage your money by having a good fi nancial statement.
HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT RETIREMENT PLAN FOR ME AND MY FAMILY? It depends on the opportunities available in your life. Mutual funds are a great way to save and invest. It’s important to take advantage of 401K, Roth IR A, traditional IR As, and cash-value life insurance in combination with other investment opportunities. Pick the type of investment that fits your risk tolerance. If you have the talent and time, you can buy investment properties like rental homes and/or buildings that create income. Be sure to have six months to a year of liquid reserves to support your family. Avoid all get-rich schemes! Instead, associate
with people leading successful fi nancial lives. You need a plan and the discipline of saving and investing.
DO YOU OFFER A WAY TO HELP ME SAVE FOR MY CHILDREN’S COLLEGE EDUCATION? Yes, the IRS-qualified 529 plan is a good way to provide money for education. I’ve set up plans for my four grandchildren by gifting money into a mutual fund 529 plan designed to fit the needs and risk of each child. Although this plan can be used for elementary or secondary education, it works the best for college because the money has time to grow and compound. Start the plan the month the child is born—or earlier. You can gift as much as $15,000 per year per child or $75,000 as an advanced five-year gift, getting full advantage of time and money.
DOES MY CREDIT RATING AFFECT MY INSURANCE COST? A bad credit rating can negatively affect the cost of your insurance and the cost of any loans, including home, auto, and other loans. It’s free to keep track of your credit rating and keeping a high-quality credit rating is essential to your financial success. An experienced financial advisor can talk to you about this as well as things like combining home and auto insurance for substantial savings and saving up to 45% on car insurance by applying Drive Safe & Save on your vehicle just for being a better than average driver. It’s important to have an experienced financial advisor on your team to help you make these and other savvy fi nancial decisions.

SURGICAL ASSOCIATES OF MANSFIELD
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY?
HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN I EXPECT TO LOSE?
If you’re obese, and other treatments— including diet, exercise, and medication— haven’t worked for you, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery. Diets, shakes, and fad diets have less than a 5% success rate compared to 70-85% with bariatric surgery. An experienced bariatric surgeon will consider your age, weight-loss goals, and any other medical problems before recommending which is the best procedure for you.
Each patient is unique. It depends on how much weight you have to lose and how willing you are to partner with us and make the lifestyle changes necessary to lose weight safely—and keep it off. Factors like age, starting weight, and which operation you undergo can all have an impact on how much weight you lose. We’ve seen our bariatric patients lose anywhere from 40 to over 200 pounds.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT BARIATRIC PROCEDURES AVAILABLE? Bariatric doctors are having success every day providing safe weight loss with the help of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and duodenal switch. At Surgical Associates of Mansfield, we’re able to perform these procedures with the help of a state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic surgical system which allows these life-saving surgeries to be performed with very small incisions, fewer wound complications, less pain, faster and easier recovery, and superior outcomes.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY? The ultimate goal for us is to see you live a healthier, longer, safer life. Losing excess weight through one of our cutting-edge weight-loss surgeries can also mean saying “good-bye” to obesity-related conditions such as sleep apnea, hypertension, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, depression, degenerative joint disease, and more. These are conditions which negatively affect your quality of life and often lower your life expectancy. Weight loss surgery can jumpstart your new, healthy lifestyle and improve your relationship, self-esteem, employment opportunities, and overall health and happiness.
DR. JEREMY PARCELLS
CAN I STILL GET PREGNANT AFTER HAVING WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY? Absolutely and research suggests that weight-loss surgery before pregnancy can lower the risk to women and their babies of obesity-related problems during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, blood pressure disorders, newborns who are large for their gestational ages, postpartum hemorrhage, and cesarean delivery. For some women, losing weight has made it easier for them to get pregnant. It is, however, recommended that you wait at least one year, and preferably two years, after bariatric surgery to become pregnant. Your OB-GYN should perform nutritional deficiency testing before conception to determine your individual need for supplements, as well as monthly tests during pregnancy. But many women deliver healthy babies after bariatric surgery.
ARE THERE RISKS WITH WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY? There are risks with any surgery. But when compared to the risks of living with obesity, the risks of bariatric surgery are minimal. The main thing to keep in mind is to have a skilled and reputable surgeon who can successfully address any risks that arise in a healthy and safe way. Very rarely do complications arise.
DR. ANDREW STANDERWICK

DRAMATIC SURGICAL ADVANCEMENT
HOW HAS GENERAL SURGERY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
about the expert
GARY K. ALEXANDER, MD, FACS
SURGICAL ASSOCIATES OF MANSFIELD
With his background in computers, Gary Alexander has trained extensively in all applications of the da Vinci robotic surgical platform. After years as a board-certified general surgeon, he’s still fascinated by the human body and its ability to repair itself. Dr. Alexander emphasizes patient education and empowerment, partnering with his patients to find the most viable, least invasive treatment options.
Surgery has always had the glorious tradition of innovation, physicians who push the boundaries of the profession and advance the science. Over the last 20 years, I’ve seen significant advances with instrumentation and optics. These changes have allowed us to perform operations—that used to require large incisions—with small, barely noticeable i n c i s i o n s . M o r e i m p o r t a n t l y, a s communication and interconnectivity have blossomed, so has the availability and the expression of new ideas. We’re not simply limited to a few textbooks or journals but have vast resource of ideas and surgeons around the world can talk to each other instantaneously and share their experiences and innovations.
WHAT IS ROBOTIC SURGERY AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? Robotic surgery in its simplest sense is the marriage of the human brain and experience with today’s technological advances. Robotics allows our eyes to see with clarity and magnification anatomy that we could not previously see. Robotics allows our hands to move instruments with gentle precision in places where our hands could not previously reach. The benefits of this visualization and precision has proven to be fewer complications, less blood loss, and faster recovery.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM REFLUX SURGERY? The most insidious part of acid reflux disease is that it robs people of a freedom they used to have when they could live a life that didn’t revolve around heartburn, being able to have a cup of coffee or share a
meal with friends without having to worry about the misery to follow. Reflux and heartburn are often a fi xable condition. Ref lux surger y has fantastic results allowing patients to stop taking antacids. There are several surgery options, all of which include fast recovery and resolution of heartburn symptoms.
HOW MUCH RECOVERY AND TIME OFF WORK CAN I EXPECT AFTER ANY GENERAL SURGERY? Recovery from surgery varies depending upon the operation. However, with most minimally invasive procedures, major recovery is anywhere from three to five days and full recovery is anywhere from four to six weeks.
WILL I HAVE A SCAR FROM MY SURGERY? Scar-less surgery is a noble goal. However, until we discover more rapid cellular regeneration, such things are in the realm of science fiction. The reality is most, if not all, operations require an incision that needs to heal. The wonderful thing about modern technology though is that scars are becoming fewer and smaller every day. We also have advanced technologies that help these incisions fade to the point where they’re nearly invisible.
WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO A PATIENT BEFORE THEY SEE A SURGEON? Take your time. Do your research. People spend more time reading reviews for products on Amazon or restaurant reviews than they do looking for a surgeon. Know why you’re going to see a surgeon. Ask questions. If you don’t understand the answer, ask the question again. Have a good dialogue. Remember that you’re the customer.

WHAT IS PLASTIC SURGERY? Plastic surgery quite literally means reshaping. It comes from the Greek word, etymology, meaning “the art of remodeling”. Plastic surgery is the surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR PLASTIC SURGERY? Each cosmetic surgery patients comes to us with their own unique concerns, p er s on a l it ie s , a nd go a l s for t hei r appearance. After a consultation visit, we will discuss your concerns and desires and review your health history. We then devise a plan of surgical care that will give you the most natural results for your age and history.
IS PLASTIC SURGERY SAFE? Choosing to have plastic surger y is an important decision and selecting a plastic surgeon is vital. Look for someone with experience, skill, and training, preferably with board certification from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Investigate your surgeon, his reputation, and the facility where the procedure will be performed. We offer a fully certified American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities accredited operating room which assures our patients the level of care they need and the comfort and privacy they deserve.
AM I ABLE TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE PROCEDURE AT A TIME? Yes, one of our most requested procedures is a Mom my M a keover, wh ich is a combination of breast procedures and tummy tuck. In addition, some women also ask for liposuction to contour their
bothersome areas. Multiple procedures are considered based on the surgery time needed.
HOW MUCH RECOVERY TIME/TIME OFF WORK SHOULD I EXPECT? Of course, each person is different, so each recover is different and dependent on the surgery performed. You’ll be up the day of surgery and will be given oral pain medication for early recovery as well as local blocks administered by an anesthesiologist to decrease discomfort in the first 24 to 72 hours of recovery. Most patients return to work three to ten days after surgery, depending on the surgery and type of work they do.
IN 2021, WHAT HAVE BEEN THE FIVE MOST POPULAR PROCEDURES AT YOUR SURGERY FACILITY? The plastic surgeries procedure we’re most often asked to perform are breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, waist tuck and liposuction. As a boardcertified plastic surgeon with 30 years’ experience, I’ve performed thousands of these procedures with beautiful results.
ARE THERE THINGS I CAN DO TO AID IN MY RECOVERY? Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do to facilitate the healing process. If you’re a smoker, quit a minimum of four weeks before surgery, and don’t smoke for at least four weeks afterward. Nicotine slows healing and increases risk for complications. Take it easy but don’t do nothing. Get up and move gently and frequently, as soon as possible after your procedures, to promote good circulation, prevent blood clots, and ease stiffness and discomfort. Go to all follow-up appointments with your surgeon and listen to him, not the internet. Don’t take any herbs, supplements, or medications without your doctor’s permission.

P ODI AT RY
PUTTING YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD
WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM YOU SEE IN YOUR CLINIC?
about the expert
DR. MATTHEW MCCABE, DPM BOARD CERTIFIED
WATER OAK FOOT AND ANKLE SURGERY
Dr. Matthew McCabe DPM, MS, DABPM, FACFAS completed his undergraduate work at Utah State University. He did his medical training at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago also earning a Master’s in Healthcare Administration. He completed his foot and ankle surgical residency at Christus Saint Patrick Hospital and the Center for Orthopaedics in Lake Charles, Louisiana and his fellowship training at the Midwest Foot and Ankle Fellowship in Omaha, Nebraska.
Heel pain is more common than most people realize. It could be caused by several factors. Most often, it’s plantar fasciitis, but it could also be a stress fracture or tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). TTS is like carpal tunnel syndrome but in your ankle. All are easily treatable inclinic. Other problems include bunions, hammer toes, and Achilles pain.
ARE YOU FELLOWSHIP-TRAINED AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Yes, I am fellowship-trained. Fellowship training is specialized, focused training after residency. My residency years were focused on trauma, such as ankle fractures and foot fractures, and sports medicine and surger y. My fellowship training was focused on limb salvage, including wound care and office procedures to prevent wounds and problems related to diabetes. It also included complicated reconstructive surgery such as Charcot foot and traumatic deformities.
WHAT’S A DIABETIC PREVENTATIVE EXAM? People with diabetes often experience complications related to their feet. Regular preventative diabetic foot exams can help prevent wounds, infections, hospitalizations, and amputations by identifying and addressing risk factors that may lead to problems related to feet. We also employ custom-molded diabetic orthotics and diabetic shoes. If you have diabetes, your primary care doctor can refer you for a diabetic foot exam.
WHAT’S THE NEW BUNION PROCEDURE? It’s a procedure aimed at correcting the root cause of a bunion deformity. In the
past, procedures were aimed at addressing the prominent bump next to the big toe. In recent years, we discovered the main problem really lies in the joint behind the big bump. This new procedure, called Lapiplasty, allows for better correction, faster return to walking, faster return to activity, and lower complication rates. I can do this if you have bunion pain. This ain’t your grandma’s bunion procedure. We’ve come a long way since then.
IF I REQUIRE SURGERY, WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT? Many factors contribute to surgical outcomes. With the exceptions of trauma, I always exhaust all conservative measures fi rst, making surgery my last option. I believe this leads to better outcomes. It’s important to understand the goal of surgery. There are plenty of problems I can fi x, after looking at an x-ray, but I always ask myself, “Will this help the patient or will it make the patient better?” I believe in treating patients like family. If I don’t believe a procedure would be helpful, I tell the patient so. If I believe surgery is indicated, I have a collaborative discussion with the patient to discuss goals and expectations.
WHEN DO I NEED TO SEE A PODIATRIST? Any ankle or foot issue can be seen by a podiatrist. Many injuries will get better with rest, ice, anti-infl ammatories, and activity modification. However, if you’re still experiencing pain or limitations, it’s time to see a podiatrist. Podiatrists specializes in foot and ankle problems and are experienced in problems and pathologies of the ankle as well as the foot including diabetic foot exams, fractures, heel pain, foot pain, ankle sprains, and everything in between.

ask the EXPERT B R E A S T HE A LT H
THE BRIGHT FUTURE OF BREAST CARE
WHAT LED YOU TO SPECIALIZE IN BREAST HEALTH? Dr. Jones: My mother was diagnosed with colon cancer when I was in medical school. After that experience, I knew I wanted to care for cancer patients. I feel strongly about being a woman’s health advocate and enjoy helping women pay attention to their breast health and get the care they need. When it comes to health, I feel women often put themselves on the back burner. When I decided to specialize in surgery, taking care of women with breast cancer and breast conditions combined my passions perfectly. I’m honored to care for women through one of the most difficult times of their lives – and help them come out on the other side. Dr. Nabeel: Taking care of women affected by cancer is incredibly fulfilling. The treatment of breast cancer has evolved dramatically over the last 30 years. As cancer care becomes prog ressively sophisticated, mortality for breast cancer declines. A main reason is widespread screening mammograms, which allow detection of cancers when they are small and contained, thus with higher cure chances. Today, women with operable stage I-III breast cancer have a high chance of cure. In many women with advanced disease, cancer can be maintained for a long time with reasonable quality of life.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD WOMEN BE SCREENED FOR BREAST CANCER? Dr. Nabeel: Screening means looking for signs of disease before symptoms present, with a goal of fi nding cancer early when it’s more easily treated and possibly cured. Generally speaking, American Cancer Society recommends: • Women 40-44: Annual breast cancer screenings w ith mammog rams if they wish. • Women 45-54: Annual mammograms.
• Women 55 and older: Mammograms either annually or every two years. • Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and expected to live 10 years. I advocate starting annual mammograms sooner rather than later.
WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS EXIST IF BREAST CANCER IS DETECTED? Dr. Jones: Treatment depends on the kind of cancer, its size and if it has spread. The most common treatments are surgery, chemotherapy and hormonal, biological and radiation therapy. Your doctor will help you determine which is best for you.
about the expert KORY JONES, MD
USMD
Dr. Jones specializes in breast surgery at USMD. A Texas native who has practiced in Arlington and Mansfield since 2007, her mission is to provide women with advanced and comprehensive breast care from diagnosis through survivorship.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT WOMEN TO KNOW? Dr. Jones: Early diagnosis of breast cancer is key to survival. Don’t disregard changes or concerns with your breasts. If you notice a change, even if you think it’s small, go see your doctor! You’ll never regret having it checked, but you may seriously regret ignoring it. Dr. Nabeel: A woman will probably be the first to notice changes in her breasts or nipples. The fear of malignancy may lead to delay in seeking care. However, early-stage breast cancer is potentially curable so delaying care may decrease chances of cure. Don’t ignore changes in your breasts. Talk to your physician.
HOW CAN SOMEONE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU? Dr. Jones: I practice at USMD Arlington South General Surgery Clinic. To make an appointment call (817) 275-3309 or visit USMD.com. ask the EXPERT PEDI AT RIC S
PARTNERING WITH YOU IN THE GREATEST JOURNEY OF YOUR LIFE
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CHOOSE A PEDIATRICIAN? SHOULD I SELECT ONE BEFORE MY BABY IS BORN?
about the expert
ERIN WALLACE, MD
USMD MANSFIELD PEDIATRIC CLINIC
Dr. Wallace considers it a privilege to help children grow and develop from birth through young adulthood. A graduate of University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, she completed her residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and now practices at USMD. She’s board certified by American Board of Pediatrics and particularly enjoys helping families learn about their child’s character and development.
It’s a great idea to select a pediatrician before your child is born. Having a baby changes so much and having this important decision made ahead of time is one less detail to worry about. The great news is many pediatricians provide free prenatal visits. This allow you to sit down and talk with potential doctors. If you don’t have this opportunity or you’re looking for a new pediatrician, I always suggest taking with your OB/GYN or your friends. They can often provide great recommendations. It’s also important to check with your insurance and determine if the pediatrician you selected is on your insurance plan. Not doing this ahead of time can cause stress down the road.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CHILD SEE A PEDIATRICIAN AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT THESE APPOINTMENTS? Your child will see a pediatrician from birth through adolescence, with frequent wellchild visits happening every few months throughout their fi rst few years of life. These well-child visits will become annual visits once your child is older, generally around the age of three. Each well-child visit is a bit different depending on your child’s age. Generally, however, they include weight and height measurements, developmental screenings, blood pressure, vision and hearing checks, and vaccines— and blood work as needed. These visits are also opportunities to talk with your pediatrician about any developmental concerns you may have. This includes things like school readiness or behavior and physical concerns. Pediatricians
will also see children as needed for sick visits, injuries, chronic conditions, and follow-up exams as they grow.
WHAT’S CONSIDERED NORMAL? ARE THERE CERTAIN THINGS OR WARNING SIGNS I SHOULD LOOK FOR AS MY CHILD GROWS? This depends on your child’s age. Your pediatrician will give you information on what to expect when it comes to your child’s development and behavior. If you feel your child isn’t developing at a normal rate, not achieving developmental milestones appropriately, or if family members, teachers, or daycare providers expresses concern about your child’s development or behaviors, ask your pediatrician. That’s why we’re here. You’ll never regret asking questions.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PEDIATRICIAN? I love getting to know children and families. Babies grow up overnight it seems—from needing everything as a newborn to a two-year old who often tells parents and siblings what to do. For me, it’s a privilege to be an extension of your family and to educate you on your child’s growth, development, and milestones. My goal is to partner with you to help your child be as healthy as possible as they transition from newborn to adolescent.
HOW CAN SOMEONE MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU? I care for children at the USMD Mansfield Pediatric Clinic located at 252 Matlock Road, Suite 330, Mansfield, Texas 76063. To make an appointment with me or one of my partners call (817) 557-5437 or visit USMD.com.

ask the EXPERT ONCOLOGY
PIONEERING THE LATEST IN ONCOLOGY TREATMENT AND CARE WHAT LED YOU TO THE FIELD OF ONCOLOGY AND TO USMD?
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE SELECTING AN ONCOLOGIST?
My desire to become an oncologist began while obtaining my Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biology. I researched molecular causes of cancer and gained confidence that humankind could discover how to treat cancer. From then on, I knew I wanted to lend my talents to fighting cancer. I joined USMD in 2020 to lead the organization’s efforts to create and launch its new medical oncology and hematology division. I was excited to join USMD and help the organization build a different type of cancer care program. At USMD, we know every patient’s cancer journey is unique, so we tailor treatment plans to each patient. We partner with and support patients from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.
Look for an oncolog ist who’s up to date on the latest cancer knowledge, developments, and treatment—and who wants to share that knowledge. You want someone who encourages and is willing to answer questions and address concerns. This includes questions from patients and loved ones. It’s also important your oncologist offer clear and concise explanations of diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and expected outcomes, including any side effects and benefits. Finally, you want an oncologist with access to the latest technologies and treatments, including precision medicine clinical trials.
THAT SOUNDS ENCOURAGING. CAN YOU TELL US MORE? Our brand new facilities offer the most advanced care and treatment as well as access to precision medicine and clinical trials. We have a compassionate team that treats patients like family, board-certified doctors, experienced advanced practice clinicians, and nurses certified by the Oncology Nursing Society. We also offer patients after-hours support, a nurse navigation program, and financial counselors.
HOW IMPORTANT ARE PREVENTIVE SCREENINGS IN REGARD TO EARLY CANCER DETECTION? Preventive screenings are important to overall health, but they’re also important when it comes to catching cancers early. The goal of screening is to fi nd cancer before it has time to grow and spread, when it can be more easily treated and possibly cured. It’s important to talk with your doctor about which screenings are appropriate for you.
WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FIELD OF ONCOLOGY? ARE THERE NEW DEVELOPMENTS ON THE HORIZON? Oncolog y is a lways evolv ing, w it h new treatments and breakthroughs on the horizon. Even now, precision medicine, sometimes called personalized medicine, offers a new approach to cancer treatment. Precision medicine is a type of care that lets doctors select treatments matched to molecular characteristics of a patient’s cancer, allowing oncologists to provide new and personalized treatments. I’m happy to have access to precision medicine at USMD and am confident this will lead to more successful treatments with better outcomes.

WALKING WITH WOMEN THROUGH ALL LIFE’S STAGES
about the expert
ANGALENE JACKSON, DO
USMD MANSFIELD OB/GYN CLINIC
Dr. Jackson specializes in obstetrics and gynecology at USMD. She’s a Fort Worth native who loves the longevity of the patient-physician relationships in women’s health. There are many milestones that occur in a woman’s life and Dr. Jackson feels blessed to be a part of them. She strives to give each patient the time, attention, and care she needs and deserves.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE KEY HEALTH CHALLENGES FACING WOMEN?
WHAT ARE SOME STEPS WOMEN CAN TAKE TO ACHIEVE BETTER HEALTH?
Women’s health issues are as multi-faceted as the lives women lead. Though a woman can present with a physical issue, the problem can have major implications on the complex and varied roles a woman plays, including mother, professional, wife, or daughter. It’s important for women to be aware of how lifestyle, stressors, and mental health impact their physical health and longevity. We know the leading causes of death for women in the U.S. are heart disease and cancer, both of which can be either reduced by staying on top of health and wellness or detected early with screenings when there’s a higher chance of cure. As women, we tend to put everyone else’s needs ahead of our own. But if we neglect our own health, everyone loses.
Generally speaking, to achieve overall better health, women can practice things such as healthy eating, being active, getting reg ular checks up, avoiding unhealthy behaviors such as tobacco use or excessive alcohol use, being aware of mental health, which includes managing stress and getting enough sleep. Try to take some “me” time when you can fit it into your schedule.
ARE THERE IMPORTANT PREVENTIVE SCREENINGS WOMEN SHOULD RECEIVE? We recommend women come in for an annual well-woman visit. These once-ayear checkups serve as preventive visits to review screening tests, assess risk factors for inherited diseases, follow up on chronic conditions, and check for any early signs of disease. Specific tests include pap smears beginning at age 21, mammograms around the age of 40, colonoscopies at age 45, and bone density scans at age 65. These are general guidelines. Your doctor may recommend screenings earlier and/or more frequently, if you have certain risk factors. These visits are also a great opportunity to talk with your doctor about birth control, trouble with periods, sexually transmitted infections, depression, and more.
WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT? As an OB/GYN, I care for women through all stages of life for conditions that involve the female reproductive system. This includes heavy, painful or irregular periods, abnormal pap smears, fertility assessment, pregnancy and postpartum, pelvic pain, fibroids, ovarian cysts, bladder infections, vaginal infections, menopause, breast issues, and depression to name a few.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? I love the relationships I’m able to form with patients and being able to care for women through the different stages of life. I feel so fortunate that my patients entrust me with such personal and major moments. It’s my honor to partner with women of all ages to help them realize optimum wellness and wellbeing.

ask the EXPERT
UROLOGIST
THERE’S HELP FOR INCONTINENCE
WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS DOES A UROLOGIST ADDRESS? Urologists are surgeons who complete a five-to-six-year residency after medical school. They treat diseases of the urinary system in men, women, and children, as well as any condition related to the male reproductive system. Common problems urologists treat include kidney stones, cancers of the urinary system, bladder issues, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, male infertility, prostate problems, vasectomy, hormonal disorders, and urinary tract infections.
WHEN SHOULD I SEE A UROLOGIST? There are many reasons to seek care from a urologist. Do you feel like you urinate too often, or not often enough? Have you ever seen or been told you had blood in your urine? Do you ever leak urine on accident? Are you waking at night to urinate? Do you suspect you may have a kidney stone? Do you or your partner have issues with sex drive or erections? These are all common questions and concerns urologists can provide answers for.
HOW MANY DAILY TRIPS TO THE BATHROOM IS NORMAL? Most people urinate six to seven times per day. Although that “normal” can var y from person to person, if how frequently you urinate is bothersome to you, it’s considered a problem. Urinating frequently can also be an early sign to underlying issues, such as overactive bladder, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, enlarged prostate, or a more concerning problem such as bladder cancer. If you feel you’re rushing to the
bathroom throughout the day or night, if you have to know where the nearest bathrooms are at every store you visit, or if your bladder is limiting your daily life, it might be time to schedule a visit with a urologist.
I SOMETIMES CAN’T MAKE IT TO THE BATHROOM IN TIME, OR HAVE AN ACCIDENT WHEN I COUGH OR SNEEZE. IS THIS JUST A CONSEQUENCE OF GETTING OLDER? Leakage of urine, or urinary incontinence, is not simply “part of getting older,” and can cause significant stress. Whether you leak before you can make it to the bathroom or you leak with coughing, sneezing, or exercising, it’s usually due to a treatable issue a urologist can address. Urinary incontinence can affect both women and men but urologists specialize in helping get these symptoms under control.
I THINK WE’RE DONE HAVING KIDS. WHAT DOES A VASECTOMY ENTAIL? A vasectomy is much less complex, with fewer complications, and less expense than female sterilization (getting tubes tied) making it a great option for those considering a more permanent option for pregnancy prevention. Most urologists perform vasectomies in-office or at outpatient surgery centers where you can go home the same day. Most men do well after the surgery, usually requiring only over-the-counter medications for pain. Recovery is typically one to two weeks, with most men back to normal activity, seven to ten days after the procedure. If you’re contemplating a vasectomy, I’d encourage you to schedule a consultation with a urologist to get more information and have all of your questions answered.

ask the EXPERT HOME DECLU T T ERING A ND OR GA NI Z AT ION
DESTRESS THROUGH DECLUTTERING about the expert CATHY ORR
THE UNCLUTTERED LIFE Cathy is certified and trained at the Master Level in Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method, yet uses this as only one piece in a holistic approach to decluttering and organizing. Cathy believes that organization helps you simplify your life, eliminate waste, and saves you time and money. She has been organizing homes for over twenty years.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DECLUTTERING AND ORGANIZING? Decluttering means to remove clutter by donating, recycling or discarding, not packing things away, giving them to others, or moving things from room to room. Decluttering is the fi rst step to organizing a home. Once you have decluttered, it is easier to organize. Of ten conf used w ith declut ter ing, organizing is the step that comes after decluttering. Organizing means creating a plan for an area of your home, such as a closet. Decluttering and organizing save you time, money and energy, with the end goal of creating a functional and peaceful environment in which to thrive.
WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF CLUTTER?
about the expert DANICA ORR
THE UNCLUTTERED LIFE Danica takes a visual approach to organization. Having graduated from UC Berkeley with an interdisciplinary major combining fine art, visual studies, media, communications, history and sociology, she uses a wide lens to look at organization from a creative, visual perspective. She has coined the term “decorganize,” using decorative items to organize a space to enhance its beauty and function.
Clutter can increase cortisol, the “stress hormone.” A study by UCLA found a link between a high density of household objects and elevated cortisol levels. Messy spaces signal the need for future cleaning, and the mental weight of this increases stress. According to the UCLA study, clutter mentally and physically affects women more than men. And, the Mayo Clinic suggests that clutter can decrease your ability to focus and be productive. Existing in a cluttered environment taxes your brain because the cluttering objects compete for your attention. Further studies by St. Lawrence University and Princeton University show people with cluttered homes tend to suffer from insomnia or exhaustion because the stress of clutter affects their mental energy.
WHAT SHOULD I KEEP/DISCARD WHEN I DECLUTTER? Keep the things that ref lect who you
are today, not who you were, or where you anticipate being in the future. In other words, your external and internal environments need to match. Many people hold on to things from their past, such as clothing that no longer fits or is outdated. They frequently ask themselves the “what if” questions, “What if this comes back in style?” or “What if I want this again in the future?” These questions can be paralyzing during the decluttering process. The real purpose of decluttering is to surround yourself with the things you love, give your life purpose, and reflect your true self. Life changes, and decluttering focuses on letting go of things that no longer serve you. By surrounding yourself with what you love, your mood is lighter and you feel less overwhelmed.
CAN I DECLUTTER BY MYSELF? Having help in the decluttering process makes letting go of items easier. Many people get anxious or have difficulty making decisions about what to keep or discard. With the help of a professional and an objective perspective, decisions flow more easily and help you feel more confident in your choices.
ISN’T HIRING A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZER EXPENSIVE? In the long-run, hiring a professional organizer saves you time and money. When you’re organized, you know what you own, reduces overbuying, rebuying, and allows you to live with less. By living with less, you actually create a life of more. Not only does organizing free up time, money, and resources, it also allows you to feel happier. Hiring an organizer is an investment in your future and wellbeing.

PAIN MANAGEMENT
GETTING YOU BACK TO THE LIFE YOU ENJOY
WHAT IS PAIN MANAGEMENT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Understanding pain is the fi rst step in managing it. The goal of pain management is to minimize pain, rather than eliminate it because quite often it’s not possible to completely do away with pain. Two other goals of pain management are to improve function and increase the quality of life. These three goals go hand-in-hand. Pain management is important because it allows patients suffering from chronic pain to explore all their treatment options before committing to surgery. At Regency Pain & Therapy Institute we offer most treatment options under one roof for the convenience of our patients. There are many suitable treatment options for patients to choose from, including but not limited to physical therapy, manipulations, medications, procedures, injections, and surgery.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE YOU AS A PATIENT? In many cases you DO NOT need a referral from another provider to see one of our pain management specialists. You can simply call our office directly to schedule an appointment. The practice accepts most major insurance plans, and we have dedicated staff to help you fi gure out what’s covered by your particular plan.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT? As a pain management specialist, I begin every new patient appointment with a complete pain evaluation. This includes developing a medical history, reviews of any tests or bloodwork, and a physical examination to help me better understand your pain. This initial evaluation is one of the most important parts of the pain management process because a full and complete assessment is a key component in developing a customized treatment plan. No matter the cause of pain or how long it has been present, a patient should
expect to have a better understanding of their pain and treatment options after the initial evaluation.
WHAT PAIN CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT? Throughout my 15-year career, I’ve treated many acute and chronic pain conditions, and have successfully helped my patients manage neck and back pain, joint pain, headaches, nerve pain, and pain caused by injury or accidents. If a patient’s condition is something I can’t treat, I’ll work to get them set up with an appropriate specialist.
DO YOU HAVE A PROFESSIONAL MISSION STATEMENT? My focus is to decrease a patient’s pain while increasing their productivity, minimizing medication use, maximizing physical activity, and improving their overall quality of life. I believe quality care is fi rst achieved by performing a thorough physical exam and taking a detailed history of the patient to obtain the right diagnosis. Once diagnosed, I provide new patients with detailed information about their diagnosis and spend quality time with them making sure they understand everything. From that point, we work together to move forward with an individualized treatment plan. Often by the time a patient sees me, they’ve been to multiple doctors and may have given up on ever having their quality of life back. I want to partner with them and help them live a full, meaningful life again.

Sleep apnea is a serious medical problem in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you are sleeping. This prevents your body and your brain from getting optimal levels of oxygen at night. If you snore loudly or gasp for air in your sleep, you could have sleep apnea and should seek treatment right away. Long-term untreated sleep apnea can lead to or cause excessive daytime sleepiness, cardiac issues, memory issues and much more.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE SLEEP APNEA? If you experience symptoms like excessive daytime sleepiness, chronic fatigue, cognition issues and loud snoring you could have sleep apnea. You can speak with your primary care provider or fi nd a dentist that specializes in dental sleep medicine. My practice offers at-home sleep apnea testing which tracks your breathing during sleep in the comfort of your own bed! The test will allow us to see when you stop breathing and any decreases in your oxygen levels.
IF I SNORE DO I HAVE SLEEP APNEA? Not all people who snore have sleep apnea, but it is a sign of resistance in the airway. As snoring gets louder, the chances of having sleep apnea are greater.
The only way to know is to seek a sleep test with your doctor or a dentist who treats sleep apnea.
WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE? The most well-known treatment for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. This is a machine that uses a hose and face mask to deliver constant air pressure to your lungs while you sleep. The pressurized air prevents the airway from collapsing. Many people complain about the face mask, hose and/or the increased pressure during this treatment. My practice offers an alternative – an oral appliance that moves the lower jaw forward during sleep which opens the airway and allows for better breathing at night.
WHAT ARE POSSIBLE SIDE-EFFECTS OF ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY? Most people do not experience side effects if they follow instructions from their dentist regarding therapy. I prescribe stretching in the morning and the use of another appliance that brings the jaw back to its natural position. Occasionally, patients may experience mild jaw soreness that improves throughout the day. Overall, oral appliance therapy is a great nonsurgical and conservative way to treat sleep apnea.

WALK
the walk S T R O L L I N G Y O U R WAY T O B E T T E R H E A LT H BY M I M I G RE E N WOOD KN IGHT
The average American takes about 5,117 steps per day — equivalent to walking approximately two and a half miles. Compare this to UK residents who average 6,322 steps daily. The Japanese average 7,168, the Swiss 9,650, and Western Australians average 9,695 steps a day, almost twice that of Americans. Here are some compelling reasons we should all work to get those numbers up. According to the American Heart Association, research has shown that walking at a lively pace for at least 150 minutes a week can help you: Think better, feel better, and sleep better Reduce your risk of serious diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and several types of cancer Improve your blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood cholesterol levels Increase your energy and stamina Improve your mental and emotional well-being and reduce the risk of depression Improve memory and reduce your risk of dementia Boost bone strength and reduce your risk of osteoporosis Prevent weight gain

wellness | WALK THE WALK
Get Creative Take a walk during your lunch break alone or with a coworker. Schedule walking meetings. Walk while talking on the phone. Set a reminder on your phone or smartwatch to get up and move every 30 minutes. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park far from your destination and walk to and from your car. Per the Better Health Channel, you carry your own body weight when you walk. This is known as weight-bearing exercise. Some of the benefits include: Increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke Improved management of conditions such as hypertension, joint, and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes Improved balance Increased muscle strength and endurance Reduced body fat
pain, blisters, plantar fasciitis, and soft tissue injuries. It’s also good to vary the surface on which you walk so your foot isn’t always landing the same way. The proper walking form is heel, instep, toe with a light, easy step, head up, spine elongated, and core tight.
If you live in a walkable town, do as many errands as possible on foot.
KEEP IT FUN
Walk to another restroom instead of using the one closest to you.
Vary your route to keep things interesting. Walk with a friend or coworker or even join a walking club. If you have a dog, by all means, take him along. Listen to a podcast or audiobook as you go. Vary the time of day you walk or drive to a park or downtown area to enjoy new sights and sounds.
GET YOUR 30
CHALLENGE YOURSELF
Health experts agree that 30 minutes a day at a brisk pace is a good goal for most of us, but what’s considered brisk? If you can carry on a conversation but not necessarily sing, you’re walking briskly. Of course, as with any exercise, if you’re not already walking, consult your doctor before beginning a walking regimen.
Keep things interesting by challenging yourself to walk farther or faster. Introduce light hand or ankle weights or hand movements such as boxing the air. (Never extend the arm all the way.) Walk uphill and downhill — alternate walking and jogging. Wear a pedometer or smart watch that chronicles your weekly averages and always try to improve.
BEST FOOT FORWARD
And remember, if the weather is uncooperative, the mall can be a fun place to get in your daily 30.
Don’t scrimp when it comes to walking shoes. The wrong footwear can lead to foot or shin

MANAGING
migraines SYMPTOMS, TRIGGERS, AND T R E AT M E N T O P T I O N S BY AN N E T T E BROOKS
It’s estimated that up to 39 million people in the United States live with migraine headaches. If you or a loved one are in this group, keep reading to learn more about these complex brain events, including symptoms, triggers, and treatment options.
SYMPTOMS AND POTENTIAL CAUSES Although migraines affect everyone differently, attacks last from four to 72 hours and range from tolerable to highly debilitating. Symptoms usually include a throbbing, pulsing headache on one side of the head. Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and sensitivity to light may also occur. Around one-third of migraine sufferers can predict the onset of a migraine because they experience auras, which usually occur before head pain and last up to an hour. They include visual disturbances such as blind spots, tunnel vision, and seeing flashing lights, zig-zag lines, sparkles, or stars. Auras may also involve changes in smell, taste, touch, or speech. One type of migraine — a silent migraine — doesn’t involve head pain but includes auras.

wellness | MANAGING MIGRAINES
MIGRAINE FAST FACTS There’s no complete cure for migraine because the cause is complicated and not fully understood. Migraine frequency has risen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Migraine runs in families. Up to 80% of people with migraine headaches have a first-degree relative with the disease. Migraine risk is highest in 35-to-45-year-olds, although they can affect people of all ages, including children. According to John Hopkins Medicine, the average onset for migraines in children is around age seven for boys and 10 for girls.
Genetics play a role in migraines, and lifestyle factors can trigger attacks. They include stress, change in sleep patterns, skipping meals, changes in routine, alcohol, and hormonal changes. Additionally, certain conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can worsen migraine headaches. Sex also plays a role, with women two to three times more susceptible to migraine than men.
TREATMENT OPTIONS Migraine attacks remain an enigma because there’s no definitive cause or cure. However, the good news is that migraine treatments are evolving rapidly. In fact, the 2022 Migraine World Su m m it l ist s over 30 0 med ic a l treatments and alternative therapies for migraine, from preventive supplements like Coenzyme Q10 to new medications, neuromodulation devices, and Botox. Ask your physician to review treatment options with you and explain how each works. Medications – Prescription drugs for migraine are either acute (abor tive) medications designed to stop a migraine attack if taken as soon as you notice symptoms or preventive, meaning they’re designed to reduce the frequency and severity of expected attacks. Acute migraine treatments include a variety of drugs, including triptans (serotonin receptor agonists), ergotamine derivatives, gepants,
People diagnosed with chronic migraine have headaches at least 15 days each month, and at least eight are migraines.
ditans, nonsteroidal anti-inf lammator y drugs (NSAIDs), and analgesics. Preventive treatments include anticonvulsant drugs, triptans, CGRP monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), beta-blockers, and angiotensin receptor blockers.
Studies indicate that migraine headaches are often misdiagnosed. Some studies suggest that less than half of those suffering from migraine get an accurate diagnosis. Misdiagnoses include tension headaches, an inner ear disorder, medication overuse, and sinus infection, to name a few.
Devices – SPG stimulation devices, implanted by your doctor, stimulate a small bundle of nerve cells behind the nose called the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG). External neuromodulation devices that deliver an electrical current to either lessen or raise nervous system activity include Cefaly, which works on the trigeminal nerve, Nerivio, which you wear on your upper arm to modulate the body’s pain-regulatory system and control with your smartphone, and gammaCore. GammaCore Sapphire is a small, FDA-cleared, non-invasive handheld device that treats and prevents migraine by activating the vagus nerve with gentle electrical stimulation through the skin.
KEEP A MIGRAINE SYMPTOM JOURNAL Tracking symptoms and triggers can help your doctor figure out the type of migraine you’re experiencing, evaluate the effectiveness of treatments, and make adjustments if necessary. There are a variety of convenient mobile apps you can use to log each migraine, including Migraine Buddy, Migraine Monitor, N1-Headache, and Migraine Healthline.
Botox – OnabotulinumtoxinA was approved in 2010 for adults who experience chronic migraine attacks. Doctors inject it into multiple spots around the head and neck to help stop muscles from tensing and prevent the onset of migraine. Results last around three months, so regular injections are required.

comeback PROCEDURES ON THE RISE BY A NN E T T E B R OOKS
We saw a surge in cosmetic procedures during the pandemic, and the demand remains as we continue to embrace and value self-care. Home-office and hybrid work arrangements also help, giving us greater flexibility for longer recovery times. The American Society for Plastic Surgeons reported that facial plastic surgery outpaced breast augmentation and liposuction for the first time in years during the pandemic’s “zoom boom.” Interest in facial plastic surgery continues today, although body contouring is poised to reclaim the top spots as we lose the extra pandemic weight and seek to regain a smoother, sculpted silhouette.
FACELIFTS A facelift might be ideal if you’re looking for a solution that turns back the clock a decade or more yet offers naturallooking results. Some skin laxity and sagging can be addressed with nonsurgical solutions, but facelift results are typically far more dramatic and longer lasting.

Three Nonsurgical All-Stars If you’re not ready to undergo surgery or want to improve your appearance with less downtime, non-, and minimally invasive aesthetic services may be right for you. Some require regular maintenance procedures one or more times a year to maintain results.
We’re seeing a national trend where facelifts are becoming more popular with people in their 40s. Highly customizable, they typically involve elevating the skin and tightening the underlying tissues and muscles. Fat in the face and neck may be sculpted, removed, or redistributed. Surgeons can also reposition fat pads in the cheeks, creating the appearance of a more lifted mid-face area. Procedures range from mini facelifts with minimal downtime to deep plane facelifts, an advanced facelift procedure.
NOSE RESHAPING It’s difficult not to dwell on a less than flattering view of your nose up close on a video call or in a selfie once you see it. Fortunately, plastic surgeons offer a time-tested solution — rhinoplasty — and not surprisingly, nose reshaping surgeries have been on the uptick lately. Interestingly, more people in their 40s and 50s are getting nasal rejuvenation surgery. The goal is to restore their nose to a more refined shape and appearance like when they were younger. Even if you are dissatisfied with your nose, you may not need as drastic a change as you think. The goal of nose reshaping is to bring your nose into balance with your

face to create a natural-looking result. Conservative rhinoplasty procedures often bring remarkable changes that make you look great without looking “done.”
LIPOSUCTION This surgical procedure uses a suction technique to permanently remove fat cells from specific areas of the body. Liposuction can remove more fat and provide more dramatic results since it’s a more aggressive fat reduction method than noninvasive procedures. It also requires a more extended downtime than noninvasive body sculpting services. Since liposuction doesn’t tighten the skin, providers may package skin tightening treatments with liposuction for optimal results.
EAR RESHAPING AND PINNING Otoplast y has traditionally been performed on children once their ears are fully formed. Today, with our heads featured front and center in video calls and selfies, more adults seek to improve their appearance with ear pinning and reshaping than ever before. Ear pinning addresses protruding ears while reshaping enhances the ears’ shape, position, and proportion to give them a natural and balanced appearance.
Neu rot ox i n s l i ke B ot ox , Dysport, and Xeomin reduce f ine lines and w rink les between the eyebrows (the “11s”), in the forehead, and around the eyes. Providers also use these injectables during a lip flip procedure that subtly enhances the upper lip without fillers. Dermal fillers are injected to help diminish facial lines, restore facial volume and fullness, and augment the lips. They’re also used increasingly on the backs of the hands to restore a plumper, more youthful, and less veiny appearance and to plump up def lated, w r in k led ea rlobes of ten associated with aging. Nonsurgical fat reduction technologies are all the rage because they require little to no downtime and produce not ice able resu lt s. Cold treatments like CoolSculpting employ temperatures cold enough to kill fat cells without damaging your skin. Other treatments use heat, ultrasound, or radiofrequency energy to melt fat away. Talk with your licensed provider about which nonsurg ical body contouring solution is right for you.

homestead | HERE COMES THE SUN
How to Find a Solar Panel Installer Get at least three quotes. Check qualifications and references. Hire an installer certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). Consider working with a contractor who handles all the paperwork.
WHAT ARE THE FOUR TYPES OF SOLAR PANELS? If you’ve already begun shopping, you’ve noticed that all solar panels don’t look alike. But it’s not just cosmetic — it’s performance as well. Each has different capabilities, energy-efficiency levels, and total installation costs. The four most popular types of solar include: Solar Shingles. This modern answer to a beautiful roof looks like and is as durable as architect ura l aspha lt shingles but offers solar energy. But t he y of fer t he adde d b enef it of equipping your home with a solar energy system. Each solar shingle can produce anywhere from 13 to 67 watts of solar energy and withstand just about any weather. However, the cost to install solar shingles is higher than standard asphalt shingles. Polycrystalline Solar Panels. These solar panels were developed first and are recognizable for their rectangular shape, created when silicon is melted and poured into a mold. They are cost-effective, but polycrystalline cells are not as heat-tolerant or efficient as other options and don’t generate as much electricity from the sun. Monocrystalline Solar Panels. This option has a more uniform color, a cylindrical shape, and a purer silicone formula that offers higher levels of efficiency. Monocrystalline panels are more expensive than polycrystalline, yet they last longer and often come with longer warranties.
Ask if the permit process is included in the labor cost.
Thin Film Solar Panels. This newer type of solar panel is gaining popularity. Layers of semiconductor materials (e.g., silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium gallium selenide) are rolled out as a film on a surface. They are less efficient than crystalline panels, take more roof space, degrade more quickly, and have shorter warranties. However, they are inexpensive, more flexible than crystalline solar cells, and can be manufactured into shingles.
Find out if the contractor or a subcontractor will be installing your panels. Work with a contractor who has experience with your specific utility company. Never work without a contract that includes project start and end dates, down payment details, an agreed-upon payment structure with milestones, and a final payment checklist. Your contract should also include warranty information, a cancellation policy, and the contractor’s business license number and contact information. Before signing, always read the agreement thoroughly, including any legal fine print. Consider having an attorney review the contract as well.
You’ll also want to consider which kind of solar inverter works best with your solar energ y system and roof. There are three basic kinds: Central or string, microinverters, and power optimizers. Talk to your contractor about your specific needs. DETERMINING COST The exact cost and savings of your system may vary depending on several factors, including: Your home’s average utility costs and energy usage Your rooftop’s solar potential, or the amount of sun it receives yearly The average local price for a solar panel system in your area
Keep receipts, detailed records, including when workers arrived on-site and left, interactions with a project manager or supervisor, and progress photos.

If your child will be living in a dorm, help them streamline the things they ’ll take. If they ’re flying to school, consider shipping the essentials. Then let them get settled and tell you what to send additionally.
2. If you’re traveling to college by car, plastic stackablestorage drawers are handy for packing, then stacking under a dorm bed or in the closet to hold toiletries and school supplies. When they come home for summer, everything can stay packed. 3. Coordinate with roommates and decide who’ll bring one. Your child might bring the dorm fridge while the roommate brings a microwave. Don’t send anything irreplaceable, though. Items can easily be broken or borrowed in a shared space and not returned. 4. Whether for a dorm room or apartment, don’t forget a good mattress cover since they may be sleeping on a heavily utilized mattress. 5. Speak with your child about their expectations and apprehensions about college. Even the most confident and high-achieving high school student can lose confidence, doubt their abilities, and question their social likeability when faced with the uncertainties of college. Let your child know some anxiety and self-doubt is normal. 6. If they didn’t need to apply themselves much to succeed in high school, they need to understand college can require more effort. And it can take time to adjust. If their grades aren’t stellar right out of the shoot, it doesn’t mean they ’re a failure at college. Their first semester (or year) is about learning to be a college student, not nailing a 4.0.

Ask your child to consider how much time is healthy/ reasonable to spend on social media now. Remind them that social media isn’t reality but a carefully curated impression of someone’s life that may appear perfect or “better ” than theirs but probably isn’t.
8. College will be fun but also stressful. Doing anything new is scary. Just because those around them may look confident and well-adjusted, doesn’t mean they ’re not stressed. 9. Talk to them about the importance of communication between roommates and discussing any problems (messiness, loud music, taking their things) in a direct, respectful way, rather than allowing resentment to fester. Teach them to use “I” statements such as, “I’m worried someone will steal my laptop if you keep leaving our door unlocked.” 10. Lastly, make sure your child knows there’s nothing wrong with asking for help. It ’s their academic advisor ’s job to help them. Most colleges also offer mental health counseling, and dorms have RAs (resident assistants). These people are at their disposal, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with going to them for help.

CELEBRATING AT HOME Fire Safety Tips According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks start over 19,000 fires and send over 9,000 people to the emergency room every year. Sparklers account for onequarter of fireworks injuries. The NFPA offers these safe alternatives: • Use glowsticks and noisemakers • Host an outdoor movie night • Spray red, white, and blue silly string • Make a patriotic craft • Throw a birthday party for the USA • Go to a professional fireworks show If you are handling fireworks, follow these safety tips from the National Safety Council (NSC) • Never allow children near fireworks
RED, WHITE AND BOOM! The City of McKinney celebrates the Fourth of July at Red, White and BOOM! with free family activities, live entertainment and a spectacular fireworks show. MckinneyTexas.org
• Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol • Wear protective eyewear • Never hold lighted fireworks • Keep fireworks away from people, houses, and flammable material • Only light one device at a time • Never re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks • Soak spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding • Keep a bucket of water nearby
ADDISON KABOOM TOWN!
The sky is filled with more than fireworks at Addison Kaboom Town. This event, taking place from five to 11 PM on July 3, is known for its fabulous airshows featuring historic warbirds, specialty aircraft, aerial aerobatic displays, and parachute jumpers. Other activities throughout the day include live music, a Splash Zone for kids with inflatable waterslides, and more. Admission is free with a ticket. AddisonKaboomTown.com
Don’t forget your pets! The Humane Society recommends: • Keep pets away from fireworks, preferably indoors with a TV on
• Ask a vet for anti-anxiety medication for your pet • Keep your pet hydrated • Keep a collar and ID tag on your pet in case they escape • Attend a laser or drone display instead of fireworks june 2022

If you can haul it, you can rent sturdy kayaks and boards of every kind — surf, paddle, boogie, skim, and body. Catch the best waves Port A offers in December or ride a jet ski into the sunset during the summertime and fall when the water is at least 77 degrees. As for fishing, it’s a big deal here. Port A was called Tarpon, Texas, until 1910, according to Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association Executive Director Cliff Strain. Back then, anglers wore their best clothes in case they caught a tarpon and had a photo taken with the violent, fighting trophy

fish, he said. Today food species like redfish and red snapper keep fishing competitions alive and charter boats booked for deep-sea excursions, while casual fishing off the bays and rocky jetties is year-round. In the winter, quiet but friendly couples from around the world pull in catfish on the Port Aransas Jetty. Rent fishing gear from the Port A pier shop, Keeper’s, to cast off there, or rent from Island Tackle to roam further.
RELAXATION Throw a towel down to bask in the sunshine on these coasts, but find seclusion on San Jose Island, a hidden gem accessible only by boat. Littered with millions of tiny shells, the island is a treasure chest of colorful souvenirs from the ocean floor. Dogs are allowed, but cars are prohibited, so arrive via Jetty Boat from Fisherman’s Wharf on Port Aransas but be sure to make the last boat back at 6 PM. Camping is permitted, but you’ll find no shade, showers, bathrooms, water hookups, or electricity, so bring what you need. This sandy area is public, but only on the Gulf side, so stay on the ocean side of the dunes.
Chapel on the Dunes
Around 400 species of migrating birds pass through these islands and are visible, especially during cold fronts, so look out for scarlet tanagers, painted buntings, roseate spoonbills, and many more. Dolphin-spotting is also common, with dolphin tours at least three locations - The Scarlet Lady, Dolphin Watch Nature Tours, and Captain Kirk’s - to ferry you out to catch the playful mammals as they breach the waterline. But they’re easy to see from the shore, too, especially around small bays and jetties.
FAMILY FUN Named for wild horses that once roamed the area, Mustang Island’s 18 miles of pristine shoreline include Port Aransas and Mustang Island State Park, but don’t get the park confused with the island itself. Families and friends cluster around to cookout under pop-up tents outside the state park, where you can swim and camp for free. You’ll find camping sites with grills, shade, water, electric hookups, primitive sites, and great birdwatching areas in the park, making it a great deal for family vacations.
CULTURE The tiny, whitewashed exterior of Chapel on the Dunes is a striking must-see attraction set on a hill in Port Aransas. Built in the late 1930s, interior dream-like murals are open to the public with a free tour scheduled through the Port Aransas Museum. Grounds are lovingly cared for, but

You can’t book a lousy location when you’re ready to wash off the stick y sunscreen and hit a soft bed in Port Aransas. Small but luxurious and modern, Balinese Suites and Spa is a short walk or golf cart ride to the beach, or you can wake up and see it from the balcony of beachside vacation rentals like The Mayan Princess.
GETTING AROUND Golf carts are a fun, low-impact way to get around the island. Rent a cart from a local spot by the day or the hour.
