“It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them.”

During different times in my life, summer has meant different things. When I was a kid, it meant time away from school, sunny days that seemed to last forever, family trips, and time to be with my buddies. When I was a young, single mom with a growing business, summer offered a chance to make memories with my kids, but it also presented a challenge to meet the demands of my business while keeping my kids happy, safe, and occupied.

Whatever summer means to you at this chapter of your life, I hope you’ll take some time, over the next few months to notice God’s artistry all around us. Look for Him in the colors of the sunset, the song of the birds, the profusion of summer flowers, the backyard bounty of your gardening buddies, and the ephemeral flash of a firefly. Psalm 19:1 tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Let’s spend Summer 2023 looking for and celebrating that “work”.

Hope you enjoy our annual Ask the Experts section!

Special thanks to leaders from the Arlington Historical Society, the City of Arlington, and Tarrant County who have worked together since 2017 to create the Arlington Heritage Memorial Grounds. They recently unveiled a series of interactive historical markers placed along the sidewalk that winds around the grounds. When QR codes embedded in the markers are activated by a smartphone they relate moments in the city’s history and the lives people who called Tarrant County home more than 100 years ago. Special thanks also to the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation who helped fund this project through a $140,000 grants. And here’s a story that made me smile. Students at two Mansfield ISD schools made a unique donation to the Arlington Police Department recently that will be used to help kids in crisis.

The project began when Jessica Smith, an Art Educator at Charlotte Anderson Preparatory Academy (CAPA), challenged her students to create drawings of stuffed animals. Their pictures were then delivered to Summit High School, where fellow Art Educator Kayla Rich’s students were challenged to make real stuffed animals based on the concept art of the younger students.

Their finished creations were donated to Arlington Police Department’s Victim Services Department where they will be given to children caught up in domestic disputes. Thank you, Ms. Smith and Ms. Anderson. The world needs more teachers like you!

DOES GOD send trials?

THE THINGS WE DON’T WANT TO SEE!

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” (Job 1:6-8)

You likely already know the rest of the story, but just in case, here is a snapshot: Satan claims Job is only faithful because God has protected and blessed him, and if God were to remove His protection and blessing, Job would surely turn away from God. God then gives Satan permission to test his theory. Job tragically loses everything, including his children, and is himself afflicted with excruciating sickness, all at the hands of Satan. Despite his torment, Job remains faithful. In the end, God restores everything Job lost!

14 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | april 2023 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE 14 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | june 2023

I think most Christians read this story and think to themselves, what a tragic story, but look at how God was faithful to restore everything in the end. If that’s the case, I believe we are missing something very important. We miss it because we don’t want to see it. Make no mistake about it; God suggested Job to Satan . It’s right there in black and white. “Have you considered my servant, Job?” God initiated all of it! Then — as if that wasn’t enough — God permits Satan to attack Job! So, I ask you, who is responsible for all of Job’s misfortunes? They came from the attack of the enemy. But did they really? It’s likely the very thought of what I am suggesting makes you squirm and grimace. It does not fit the image we have in our mind of God. We don’t want to see what is right in front of us! But God wanted us to see it. He made sure that the exchange between He and Satan at the beginning of the story was recorded in the scriptures for all believers to see for all generations. He wanted us to know how this whole thing went down. But why? Why does He want us to know that He was the ultimate initiator and source of all Job’s torment?

There is one verse that’s easily missed, at the very end of the story, which I believe sums up the heart of God in all of Job’s distress. Job finally responds to God’s questioning by saying, “I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees you” (Job 42:5). Those are the most beautiful words in the story. The restoration of all of Job’s stuff doesn’t begin to compare. In the midst of extreme suffering, God revealed Himself to Job.

Although the scriptures don’t say it, I believe that was the cry of Job’s heart before all of this went down. He wanted God to reveal Himself. How could this not have been his desire? We know Job was a man who loved and feared God. It was the cry of Moses when he prayed to God, “show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). It was the cry of David when he said, “This one thing I have asked of the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4) And this is not only the cry of those great men in scripture. It is also the cry of all true believers everywhere. Our soul yearns for God to reveal Himself to us. We want more of Him. Because it is the revelation of Him that changes everything!

Every day He graciously sends trials and afflictions to His children so that they may be broken. So that His Spirit can pour out of a meek and humbled heart. So that His child may become “perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:4). He disciplines us as a loving father so that He can give us the very thing our soul yearns for — more of Him. When a bone is broken, it must be reset.

That process is painful. If our muscles are to grow, we must break them down first. No pain - No Gain, right? Well, our inner man is no different.

Consider those words in Hebrews, “It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?... but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” (Hebrews 12:7, 10-11)

Some may say that I am accusing God of being the author of evil. Oh no, that is not the case. We must understand that there are truths in scripture that cannot be reconciled by the finite mind of man. God is completely Sovereign, in control of all things. Yet man, somehow, has free will. And Satan also attacks! In Lamentations, it says, “Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both good and ill go forth?” (Lamentations 3:38). Or consider the words of Paul to the Philippians, “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13). Why would I work out my salvation with fear and trembling if the very next words say that God is literally responsible for the entire process? Which one is it, Paul? Well, it is both! We must accept both! We must concede that there are seemingly contradictory truths taught in scripture that we will not be able to reconcile on this side of Heaven.

I know this can be a hard pill to swallow, especially considering the unspeakable pain, tragedies, and afflictions that many of you have endured. I know it may not line up with the version of God you have in your mind. Nevertheless, this is what scripture teaches us, and we are called to embrace it!

But why, Mike? Why is it so important to embrace this truth?

Because then you will be able to submit to your trials rather than resist them, and His power will be made perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Because then you will realize that you are not in control, and upon such realization, step into the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Because then you may cry out along with Job. “I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees you.” (Job 42:5)

If you’re like the average person, you’re taking between 8,000 and 10,000 steps a day. In your lifetime, that will add up to around 115,000 miles or the equivalent of circling the globe more than four times. Each day as you take those steps, your feet experience forces totaling hundreds of tons—the equivalent, in fact, of a fully-loaded cement truck. That force and all those steps are evidenced by the fact that your feet are slightly larger at the end of each day than they were at the beginning.

As we walk our thousands of steps and experience those tons of force, few of us give our feet much thought apart from maybe shopping for some sassy, new shoes or selecting a jaunty nail polish. But what happens when your feet begin to hurt or—heaven forbid—you injure them in an accident. What happens when the years begin to announce themselves in new aches and pains and maybe even a misshapen look or when repetitive use or a degenerative issue begin to affect our feet and ankles?

That’s when you need an experienced and dedicated podiatrist in your corner, a podiatrists like the

ones at Accent Podiatry in Mansfield and Arlington. Thousands of your Tarrant County neighbors—of all ages—have depended on them to keep their feet and ankles moving and healthy.

ADDRESSING THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM

Drs. Dharmesh Bhakta, Parth Bhakta, Steve Silvey, Shae Paschal, and Jacob Jasper spend their days looking for and treating the root cause of issues ranging from sports injuries to Achilles tendonitis, from Plantar Fasciitis to diabetic foot issues—not merely masking symptom but assessing and addressing the root cause of the pain or dysfunction. They’ve dedicated their careers to understanding the intricate working of the human foot and ankle complex (all 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments). They take time to listen to each patient’s concerns and make them feel like they’re the only patient they’ll see that day. The Accent Podiatry doctors place an emphasis on patient education and empowerment, taking their time to explain each condition and recommended treatment and offering advice on how to avoid injury or deterioration in the future.

LIFTING LIVES

ACM FUNDRAISER RETURNS TO TEXAS

THE 58TH ANNUAL ACADEMY OF COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS SHOW RETURNED TO TEXAS ON MAY 11. A day prior to the award show, the ACM philanthropic partner also returned with the ACM Lifting Lives sold out all-star golf tournament followed by a concert on the green.

Jason Aldean (last minute fill-in for Morgan Wallen due to vocal injury) brought an acoustic set that even included a little rain – showing more reasons why Aldean was awarded the Entertainer of the Decade by the 54th annual ACM. “You fi ll in when another is down,” said Aldean. Morgan Wallen’s band did rock the show for the other ACM nominated artists: Lainey Wilson, Hardy, Ernest, and Bailey Zimmerman. Lainey Wilson joined Hardy on stage to perform their duo nominated song “Wait in the truck.”

At the 58th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, Lainey Wilson won Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and two shared trophies with Hardy for the Music Event Award and Visual Media of the Year for “Wait in the Truck.” Hardy also collected a trophy for Artist Songwriter of the Year.

ACM Lifting Lives provides support through Diane Holcomb Emergency Relief Fund, dollar commitments to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, The Ryan Seacrest Foundation, Music Health Alliance, and grants to organizations who help communities across America. “The support of Country Music artists and the industry as a whole are who make the impactful work of ACM Lifting Lives possible,” added the ACM Lifting Lives Executive Director Lyndsay Cruz. Flying

ALL ABOUT AIRPLANE ETIQUETTE

The summer travel season is just heating up. If you’re flying the friendly skies, it can help to brush up on airplane etiquette. You know the basics, like having your boarding pass and ID ready and not hogging the overhead bins. But there are many little ways you can make the journey more pleasant for yourself and those around you.

Remember how security works. Brush up on security updates and have your things ready to go at the security check. After you pass through the body scanner, collect your belongings quickly and step to the side to put on your shoes, belt, and other items. Be courteous in the terminal. You’re not in your living room, so don’t FaceTime on speaker or take up all the charging stations in a 10-foot vicinity. Don’t rush the gate . Resist the temptation to elbow your way to the front of the line when the boarding agent calls your group number. Everyone will get to the destination at the same time.

It’s fine to recline. You don’t need to keep your seat perfectly upright your entire flight, but please stay mindful of the person behind you. Consider giving them a heads-up and make sure you’re not cramping them. If a meal is being served, keep your seat upright.

Remember people’s personal space. Good airplane etiquette requires you to pay attention to others’ personal space. If you bump elbows with your seatmate or your knees touch once or twice, that’s okay. But don’t intrude on

a stranger’s space the entire flight. The middle seat gets the armrest. This is one of the unspoken rules of airplane etiquette. Don’t get passiveaggressive here. If you’re lucky enough to have an aisle or window seat, enjoy it and concede the armrest to the person in the middle seat.

The window seat controls the shade. You decide whether the shade is up or down if you’re seated by the window. To be polite, you can keep the shade up during takeoff and landing. For the rest of the trip, keep it down — or up — it’s your choice.

Turn off your overhead light. Please don’t keep your overhead light on unless you need it for reading or some other activity during a night flight. Be thoughtful of the passengers around you who are trying to catch a few Zs.

Nosh nicely. A bean burrito or tuna sandwich may be filling and delicious, but it’s best to avoid bringing such foods on an airplane. Good airplane etiquette means steering clear of gas-inducing or smelly foods. Instead, enjoy snacks like granola bars, fruits, veggies, or protein-packed smoothies instead.

Keep a watchful eye on your kids. Don’t let them kick the seat in front of them, scream at absurdly high decibels, or run up and down the aisle.

Cover your mouth. Face masks may no longer be required, but that doesn’t mean people want to breathe in your exhalations as you hack and sneeze for hours on end.

Keep your shoes on. As much as you might want to, an airplane is not the place to air out your feet. If your dogs are really barking, try flexing and extending your ankles or doing simple ankle rotations.

Don’t book it to the front. When you reach your destination, don’t be that person who hightails it in front of everyone. Wait your turn and file out patiently. If you’re worried about making a connecting flight, politely ask if you can move ahead.

Don’t crowd the carousel. Standing as close as you can to the baggageclaim carousel won’t make your luggage appear any faster. Give other people some room to grab their things. It will make the whole process go much quicker.

BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE THE WONDERS OF BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT

WHAT ARE THE DANGERS OF HORMONE IMBALANCE?

Hormonal imbalance is responsible for a surprising number of common health issues including reduced focus, brain fog, fatigue, lack of energy, diffi culty sleeping, irritability, anxiety, depression, decreased muscle strength, joint pain, and reduced sexual desire and performance.

I’VE BEEN HEARING GREAT THINGS ABOUT BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THEIR BENEFITS?

INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE

Mandy Cotten has successfully performed over 25,000 pellet procedures, averaging 300 a month. She’s in high demand as a trainer teaching others in her field about the importance of hormone optimization to assist patients in achieving the highest quality of life. She is board certified through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Traditional synthetic hormones must be metabolized through the liver and be converted into a different hormone, sometimes causing the opposite effect. However because they look exactly like your naturally occurring hormones, bioidentical hormones can enter your body, go directly to the receptor site, and achieve what you need them to. They can also be tailored to your individual needs and be administered through creams, patches, pills, or pellets.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Many of my patients are enjoying a more balanced mood, improved sleep, reduced brain fog, decreased hot flashes, decreased vaginal dryness, increased stamina and energy, increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, increased libido, heart protection, bone protection, brain protection, and enhanced sexual response and desire thanks to bioidentical hormones.

HOW SOON SHOULD I EXPECT RESULTS?

Most patients notice a difference within seven to 10 days of starting a new therapy. With pellet therapy, you should notice a larger difference around the four-to-sixweek mark. Sometimes we need to make adjustments to the treatment plan. I ask

new patients to commit to two rounds of pellets to accommodate possible dosage adjustments before they’re feeling optimal. To achieve the best results it’s important to follow up with your practitioner for necessary blood work and consultation no matter which method you choose.

HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO FOLLOW UP DURING MY THERAPY?

Hormone therapy isn’t one-size-fits all. There are many variables. Four to six weeks after starting therapy, we’ll want to obtain follow up lab testing, then test periodically after that. But you shouldn’t require “full labs” again for another year unless we’re adjusting your dose. The average price of pellet therapy for women is $350 every three to fi ve months. For men it ranges from $650 to $750 every four to six months. Just because you age, doesn’t mean you should feel less than optimal. Bioidentical hormones replace the hormones you lose as you age, for a healthier, happier life.

DO I NEED THYROID MANAGEMENT?

Your thyroid health is imperative to your overall health. Thyroid function is involved in multiple aspects of your health including metabolism, temperature regulation, mood, and cardiac function. That’s why it’s important to find a provider who will evaluate the whole picture is imperative. Unfortunately, most primary care providers only look at your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which doesn’t give the full picture of your thyroid status. It’s important to look at the Free T3 and Free T4 as well as looking at antibodies against the thyroid to determine if the patient has any autoimmune dysfunction causing a thyroid problem. Often, a patient with low thyroid symptoms, will have labs that appear normal. Make sure you fi nd a provider that will listen to your concerns and fi nd the root cause of the problem.

CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON THE FUTURE OF HEART SURGERY

YOU’RE A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THAT MEANS?

As a cardiothoracic surgeon, I’m a medical doctor trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the chest, esophagus, diaphragm, heart, lungs, and trachea. A cardiothoracic surgeon completes medical school then an additional fi ve years in surgery residency and two to three-year in a cardiothoracic-surgery residency program. Alternately, they can complete a six-year integrated cardiothoracic-surgery residency and can also complete additional training in a subspecialized area.

HOW IS THAT DIFFERENT FROM A CARDIOLOGIST?

While cardiothoracic surgeon and cardiologists play equally important roles in the care of a patient with heart disease, cardiologists generally handle diagnosis and medical treatment of heart conditions. They may also perform nonsurgical procedures such as balloon angioplasty, coronary stents, ablation procedures, or placement of devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators. As a cardiothoracic surgeons, I address more aggressive treatment such as bypass surgery and surgical-valve replacement procedures. A cardiologist will general follow-up with the patient once I’ve released them. Some procedures—such as percutaneous valve replacement—may involve both specialists.

IN YOUR THREE DECADES AS A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON, HOW HAVE YOU SEEN YOUR FIELD ADVANCE?

I feel blessed to have played a part in pioneering many minimally invasive thoracic-surgery techniques and technologies, over the past 30 years. Those include video and robot-assisted surgery of the chest, heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, and trachea, less-invasive procedures which can mean shorter recovery time, less risk of infection, negligible scarring, reduced recovery time, less blood loss, less pain,

fewer complications, and far greater success rates. I’ve also had the privilege of pioneering a new mechanical heart valve requiring less anticoagulation and minimally-invasive Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) which allows me to access hard-to-reach areas of the lung, aiding in the diagnosis of lung disease and leading to earlier, personalized treatment, potentially saving lives.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER PROCEDURES YOU PERFORM?

Throughout my career, I’ve performed thousands of angioplasties to restore healthy blood fl ow to the heart, stent placement to open up narrow heart arteries, ablations to treat abnormal heart rates and rhythms, implantations of pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators to correct abnormal heart rhythms and help hearts beat more efficiently, openheart surgery to treat heart blockages in the coronary arteries or correct problems or defects, coronary artery bypass grafting to bypass a coronary artery that’s narrowed or blocked, heart valve repair or replacement for damaged or diseased valves, ventricular assist devices to treat heart failure, and carotid surgery to remove plaque in a carotid artery.

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF THESE PROCEDURES?

Cardiothoracic surgeries can help open coronary arteries narrowed by fatty plaque buildup, repair weakened heart muscle or defects, or correct heartrhythm problems. Because each patient is unique, I work cooperatively with primary-care physicians, cardiologists, or other healthcare providers to offer highly tailored treatment. With new minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgeries success rates of these procedures are greatly improved and the risk factors greatly reduced. After surgery, we’re seeing patients return to enjoying a long, vibrant life.

METHODIST HEALTH SYSTEM

For more than a decade, board-certified thoracic surgeon Dr. Darien Bradford has performed minimally invasive thoracic surgery, offering patients a successful alternative to traditional open-heart and open-chest surgery. He is highly specialized in video and roboticassisted thoracoscopic surgery performing a variety of minimally invasive procedures of the heart, lung, pleura, and mediastinum.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO SET OUT ON THE ROAD TO FINANCIAL SECURITY

WHAT’S A GOOD AGE TO START RETIREMENT PLANNING?

Start with your very first job. Set aside 10% of every paycheck for saving and investing. If there are two wage earners in the household increase the savings percentage. Almost every financial planning course, financial planning book, and even the Bible say to save at least 10% for the future. As a teenager, I learned the rule of 72. An investment that returns an average of 12% will double every six years. 6 X 12 = 72. A 6% return will double every 12 years. If you have a 401K at work and they match your money, maximize that match. 100% return! Never remove your retirement money to purchase something. Keep your retirement money protected. Built the nest egg and leverage your money by having a good financial statement.

HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT RETIREMENT PLAN FOR ME AND MY FAMILY?

It depends on the opportunities available in your life. Mutual funds are a great way to save and invest. It’s important to take advantage of 401K, Roth IRA, traditional IRAs, and cash-value life insurance in combination with other investment opportunities. Pick the type of investment that fits your risk tolerance. If you have the talent and time, you can buy investment property like rental homes and/or buildings that creates income. Be sure to have six months to a year of liquid reserves to support your family. Avoid all get-rich schemes! Instead, associate with people leading successful financial lives. You

need a plan and the discipline of saving and investing.

DO YOU OFFER A WAY TO HELP ME SAVE FOR MY CHILDREN’S COLLEGE EDUCATION?

Yes, the IRS-qualified 529 plan is a good way to provide money for education. I’ve set up plans for my four grandchildren by gifting money into a mutual fund 529 plan designed to fit the needs and risk of each child. Although this plan can be used for elementary or secondary education, it works the best for college because the money has time to grow and compound. Start the plan the month the child is born—or earlier. You can gift as much as $15,000 per year per child or $75,000 as an advanced five-year gift, getting full advantage of time and money.

DOES

MY

CREDIT RATING EFFECT MY INSURANCE COST?

A bad credit rating can negatively affect the cost of your insurance and the cost of any loans, including home, auto, and other loans. It’s free to keep track of your credit rating and keeping a high-quality credit rating is essential to your financial success. An experienced financial advisor can talk to you about this as well as things like combining home and auto insurance for substantial savings and saving up to 45% on car insurance by applying Drive Safe & Save on your vehicle just for being a better than average driver. It’s important to have an experienced financial advisor on your team to help you make these and other savvy financial decisions.

DERMATOLOGIST ADVANCED TREATMENTS FOR SKIN CANCER AND HAIR RESTORATION

WHAT IS “MOHS” SURGERY?

Mohs is a technique developed by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs, in which your dermatologic surgeon will remove a skin cancer, layer by layer, and microscopically examine each section. This enables total removal of the cancer while sparing your healthy skin, reducing scarring and speeding your recovery.

Mohs Surgery provides the highest cure rate for removal of skin cancer – up to 99 percent for a skin cancer that has not been treated before, and up to 94 percent for a skin cancer that has recurred after previous treatments.

WHEN IS MOHS THE RIGHT TREATMENT?

Mohs is the gold standard of treatment for many basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), including sensitive and critical areas around the eyes, nose, lips, ears, scalp, fingers, toes, or genitals. In these cases, removing the least tissue necessary is essential to minimize scars or limited function.

We also recommend Mohs for recurring cases, or aggressive cases where BCC or SCC are large, growing rapidly, have indistinct edges. Mohs has also been successful in treating certain cases of melanoma.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MOHS SURGERY?

The surgery happens in three primary steps, all in one visit. First, the skin around the cancer will be anesthetized (numbed), and the visible skin cancer will be removed.

Second, a thin layer just beyond the visible cancer will be surgically removed, processed, stained, and examined microscopically. You will have a short wait

while the tissue is analyzed to confi rm we have removed all the cancer. If any cancer cells do remain, steps one and two will be repeated.

In the third step, once the skin cancer is fully removed, your surgeon will recommend the best way to treat and close the wound to minimize scarring, promote healing, and speed your recovery.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER MOHS SURGERY?

There is usually minimal pain for a few days after surgery, and you should limit exercise and vigorous physical activity the fi rst couple of weeks. You can expect some swelling and bruising, and even numbness around the site for up to a year. While scarring cannot be prevented, we make it a priority to minimize it. This is a defi nite benefit of Mohs Surgery.

WILL I HAVE TO RETURN FOR FOLLOW UPS?

Once you have had a skin cancer, you are at a higher risk for more. So, take care of yourself by following up with your general dermatologist on a regular basis. You are worth the extra care – we want to see you healthy!

WHAT IS SMARTGRAFT FOR HAIR RESTORATION?

At United Dermatology Associates, we are proud to offer a state-of-the-art solution for hair loss for men and women with the revolutionary SmartGraft device. With SmartGraft, we can provide natural, permanent results utilizing the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method of hair restoration. With FUE, there is no linear scar like with the older method of follicular unit transplantation (FUT). With FUE there is no scarring, no need to shave your hair, and there is minimal down time or pain.

ACCENT ON YOU PLASTIC SURGERY AND MEDI SPA

With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Y. Anthony Nakamura is a recognized expert in plastic surgery and body contouring. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. During his celebrated career, he has performed thousands of successful plastic surgeries.

PLASTIC SURGEON FOR A NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL YOU

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST REQUESTED PROCEDURES?

The plastic-surgery procedure we’re most often asked to perform are breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, waist tuck, and liposuction. As a boardcertified plastic surgeon with over 30 years’ experience, I’ve performed thousands of these procedures with outstanding results.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR PLASTIC SURGERY?

Each patient is unique with their own concerns, personalities, and aesthetic goals. We always begin with a consultation discussing your concerns and desires and reviewing your health history. Then we devise a unique surgery plan to offer you the most natural results for your age and history.

IS PLASTIC SURGERY SAFE?

The most important decision you’ll make is your choice of plastic surgeon. Do your research looking for someone with experience, skill, and training. Look for board certifi cation from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Investigate your surgeon’s reputation and read reviews of the facility where the procedure will be performed. At Accent on You Plastic Surgery and Medi Spa, we are an accredited operating room by Quad A which assures our patients the level of care they need and the comfort and privacy they deserve.

CAN I HAVE MORE THAN ONE PROCEDURE AT A TIME?

Absolutely, one of our most requested procedures is a Mommy Makeover, which

is a combination of breast procedures and tummy tuck. In addition, some women also ask for liposuction to contour their bothersome areas. Multiple procedures are considered based on the surgery time needed.

HOW MUCH DOWNTIME SHOULD I EXPECT?

Of course, each person is different, so each recover is different and dependent on the surgery performed. You’ll be up the day of surgery and will be given oral pain medication for early recovery as well as local blocks administered by an anesthesia to decrease discomfort the first 24 to 72 hours of recovery. Most patients return to work three to ten days after surgery, depending on the surgery and type of work they do.

ARE THERE THINGS I CAN DO TO AID IN MY RECOVERY?

There’s actually plenty you can do to facilitate the healing process. If you’re a smoker, quit a minimum of four weeks before surgery, and don’t smoke for at least four weeks afterward. Nicotine slows healing and increases the risk of complications. Get up and move gently and frequently, as soon as possible after your procedures, to promote good circulation, prevent blood clots, and ease stiffness and discomfort. Go to all follow-up appointments with your surgeon and listen to him, not the internet. Don’t take any herbs, supplements, or medications without your doctor’s permission.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY FOR THE SMILE OF A LIFETIME

I HAVE A COUPLE TEETH THAT ARE BEYOND HOPE. WOULD DENTAL IMPLANTS BE A GOOD OPTION FOR REPLACING THEM?

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Implants give you the ability to eat virtually anything and to smile with confidence, knowing your teeth appear natural and your facial contours are preserved. The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts placed into your jawbone wherever teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

WHAT IS THE IMPLANT PROCESS?

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. During the fi rst procedure, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone and you should be able to wear a temporary tooth or teeth and eat a soft diet. After the implant has integrated into the bone, a permanent restoration is made. The entire procedure takes from two to four months and most patients don’t experience any disruption to their life.

WHAT ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that bond directly to the front and top surfaces of your teeth. Veneers can correct gaps between your teeth, stains, or badly shaped or

crooked teeth and help you achieve a beautiful smile. They’re an ideal choice for improving your smile and have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity and versatility.

WILL THEY LOOK LIKE MY NATURAL TEETH?

Absolutely, when bonded to your teeth, the ultra-thin porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable and highly resistant to coffee, tea, or even cigarette stains. For strength and appearance, their resemblance to healthy, white tooth enamel is unsurpassed by other restorative options. Because they’re thin, light can shine through them and they take on the natural color of the underlying tooth. With proper care, porcelain veneers will brighten your smile for well over a decade.

I’M A DENTAL CHICKEN. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE MY TIME IN THE CHAIR EASIER?

Many patients have dental anxiety because of past experiences. For them, nitrous oxide can help take the edge off, offering a pleasant level of sedation within 30 seconds to four minutes. About a third of patients will also experience a numb feeling in their cheeks and gums. After the gas is adjusted to the appropriate dose, and the patient is relaxed and sedated, the dentist can comfortably administer an anesthetic injection (if needed). After treatment is completed, the patient is given pure oxygen to breathe for about fi ve minutes, and all the effects of sedation are reversed. We also offer sedation dentistry. Under sedation most patients feel no discomfort and afterwards have little to no memory of their visit.

WATER OAK FOOT AND ANKLE

Matthew McCabe completed his medical training and master’s in healthcare administration at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago. He completed his foot and ankle surgical residency at Christus Saint Patrick Hospital and the Center for Orthopaedics in Lake Charles, Louisiana and fellowship training at the Midwest Foot and Ankle Fellowship in Omaha, Nebraska.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

I HAVE BURNING AND TINGLING IN MY FEET. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

This can be a complicated topic. Most of the time it’s related to diabetes and is called “diabetic neuropathy”. Fortunately, if it’s related to diabetes there are multiple conservative options as well as surgical options. The most common treatment is oral medications but there are other treatments that can be done in the office that are FDA approved for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy. If you don’t have diabetes there are topical options and injections. Some people can get neuropathy after ankle surgery, such as an ankle fracture repair or an Achilles repair. There are very effective treatment options for post-trauma neuropathy as well.

WHY ARE DIABETIC FOOT ULCERATIONS PROBLEMATIC?

What most people don’t realize is, if you have a diabetic foot ulceration, you’re considered a limb-salvage patient. What this means is that the diabetic foot ulceration could become severe enough to require amputation of the foot—or even the leg. Diabetic foot wound care should not only be focused on healing the ulceration but also in preventing hospitalization, infection, and reoccurrence of the wound. This is where fellowship training can separate wound healing from limb salvage and prevention. The ability to prevent problems before they occur is what fellowship training has helped me learn. Often, simple conservative measures are enough to heal the wound. However, in some cases, a simple surgical procedure such as tendon lengthening can prevent future infection, hospitalization, and amputation, not to mention the patient’s time and money.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A PODIATRIST?

Any ankle or foot issue can be seen by a podiatrist. Many injuries will get better with rest, ice, anti-infl ammatories, and activity modification. However, if you’re still experiencing pain or limitations, it’s time to see a podiatrist. Podiatrists specialize in foot and ankle problems and are experienced in problems and pathologies of the ankle as well as the foot including diabetic foot exams, fractures, heel pain, foot pain, ankle sprains, and everything in between.

WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM YOU SEE IN YOUR CLINIC?

Heel pain is more common than most people realize. It could be caused by several factors. Most often, it’s plantar fasciitis, but it could also be a stress fracture or tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS). Basically, TTS is like carpal tunnel syndrome but in your ankle. All of these scenarios are easily treatable in-clinic. Other problems include bunions, hammer toes, and Achilles pain.

I NOTICE YOU ARE FELLOWSHIP-TRAINED. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Fellowship training is specialized, focused training after residency. My residency years were focused on trauma, such as ankle fractures and foot fractures, and sports medicine and surgery. My fellowship training was focused on limb salvage, including wound care and office procedures to prevent wounds and problems related to diabetes. It also included complicated reconstructive surgery such as Charcot foot and traumatic deformities. Fellowship training has allowed me to offer my patients a wider range of podiatric treatment and has broadened my diagnostic abilities.

COSMETIC SURGEON IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER RIGHT FOR ME?

WHAT IS A “MOMMY MAKEOVER”?

A “Mommy Makeover” is a combination of cosmetic surgical procedures performed at the same time to improve the appearance of your breasts and tummy after childbirth.

WHAT SURGICAL PROCEDURES ARE PERFORMED DURING A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

Cosmetic surgery procedures commonly performed during a mommy makeover include liposuction, abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, breast augmentation with or without a mastopexy (breast lift), breast reduction, or buttock fat grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift). Typically, combined procedures for a mommy makeover are performed simultaneously during a single operation and you will have one post operative recovery period.

HOW DOES A MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURE IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF MY TUMMY?

A tummy tuck targets the entire abdomen area, including the muscles, skin, and fat. During the tummy tuck procedure, an incision is made just above your pubic area, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and skin excess and laxity are removed. This helps to eliminate loose or saggy skin, eliminate c-section scars, reduce stretch marks, and create a fl atter and fi rmer abdominal contour. In addition, liposuction may also be performed to remove stubborn fat pockets from your abdomen, fl anks, and back.

WHAT BREAST ENHANCEMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE WITH A MOMMY MAKEOVER PROCEDURE?

The look and feel of your breasts are often one of the main focuses of a mommy makeover procedure, as lactation may

leave some mothers with saggy and droopy breasts following breast feeding. Therefore, a breast lift or mastopexy is a cosmetic surgical procedure commonly performed during a mommy makeover that creates more uplifted and youthful breasts. In other circumstances, you may only need to increase the volume of your breasts following postpartum defl ation and will benefit from a breast augmentation procedure using either saline or silicone gel breast implants. Lastly, a breast lift mastopexy can be combined with breast augmentation to restore lost volume and correct for saggy and droopy breasts performed during one operative session.

IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER RIGHT FOR ME?

If you are contemplating a mommy makeover, there are several important considerations. First, while the results of your mommy makeover are considered long-term, additional pregnancies may adversely affect all the wonderful surgical work that was performed. Therefore, it is ideal to complete your family planning prior to considering a mommy makeover procedure. In addition, it is equally important to reach your ideal weight loss goals before considering cosmetic surgery, as liposuction and tummy tucks are not meant to be used in lieu of natural postpartum weight loss. Finally, if you are interested in having breast cosmetic surgery following pregnancy, you will need to discontinue breastfeeding approximately three or four months before breast enhancement to ensure that your breasts have settled into their natural volume. It is essential to consult with a qualifi ed and boardcertified cosmetic surgeon who specializes in mommy makeover procedures to discuss your goals and determine the most suitable approach for achieving your desired results.

SURGEON THE FUTURE OF SURGERY

GENERAL

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO A PATIENT BEFORE THEY SEE A SURGEON?

Take your time. Do your research. People spend more time reading reviews for products on Amazon or restaurant reviews than they do vetting a surgeon. Go to your initial consultation with a prepared list of questions. If you don’t understand the answer, ask until you do. Remember you’re the customer.

YOU’VE BEEN PERFORMING SURGERY FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. HOW HAS SURGERY CHANGED IN THAT TIME?

Over the last 20-plus years, I’ve seen significant advances with instrumentation and optics. These changes have allowed us to perform operations that used to require large incisions with small, barely noticeable incisions. More importantly, as communication and interconnectivity have blossomed, so has the availability and the expression of new ideas. We’re not simply limited to a few textbooks or journals but have vast resource of ideas. And surgeons around the world can talk to each other instantaneously to share their experiences and innovations. Surgery has always had the glorious tradition of innovation and physicians who push the boundaries of the profession and advance the science. I can’t wait to see how it advances, over the next 20 years.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC SURGERY?

Robotic surgery in its simplest sense is the marriage of the human brain and experience with today’s technological advances. Robotics allows our eyes to see with clarity and magnification anatomy that we could not previously see. Robotics allows our hands to move instruments

with gentle precision in places where our hands could not previously reach. The benefits of this visualization and precision has proven to be fewer complications, less blood loss, less risk of infection, smaller scarring, less downtime for the patient, and markedly faster recovery.

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM REFLUX SURGERY?

The most insidious part of acid refl ux disease is that it robs people of a freedom they used to have when they could live a life that didn’t revolve around heartburn, being able to have a cup of coffee or share a meal with friends without having to worry about the misery to follow. Refl ux and heartburn are often a fi xable condition. Reflux surgery has fantastic results allowing patients to stop taking antacids. There are several surgery options, all of which include fast recovery and resolution of heartburn symptoms.

HOW MUCH RECOVERY AND TIME OFF WORK CAN I EXPECT AFTER SURGERY?

Recovery from surgery varies depending upon the operation. However, with most minimally invasive procedures, major recovery can usually be expected between three to fi ve days with full recovery in four to six weeks.

WILL I HAVE A SCAR FROM MY SURGERY?

Unless we discover more rapid cellular regeneration, scar-less surgery aren’t possible. The reality is most, if not all, operations require an incision that needs to heal. The wonderful thing about modern technology though is that scars are becoming fewer and smaller every day. We also have advanced technologies that helps these incisions fade to the point where they’re nearly invisible.

ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON FIND RELIEF FOR CHRONIC PAIN

HOW MUCH IMPROVEMENT CAN I EXPECT AFTER MY SURGERY?

The choice of proceeding with a surgery should be made after careful discussion with your surgeon, and only the two of you have determined that further non-operative care options are likely to fail, based upon your surgeon’s experience and training. The surgeons at The AOA and Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital have consistently scored at the top of North Texas hospital systems for providing excellent cutting-edge care with the lowest complication rates. Of course, performing your post-operative therapy as instructed by your surgeon is key to ensuring you maximize your improvement and get as close to 100% as physically possible.

HOW SOON AFTER SURGERY WILL I START PHYSICAL THERAPY?

Therapy should start anywhere from the first few hours after a total joint replacement or spine surgery, to the first few days after arthroscopic surgeries. Or it may be delayed for six weeks for certain fractures, joint reconstructions, or rotator cuff repairs. Therapy may last for a couple of sessions, or may take three or four months, depending upon the extent of the surgery, formation of scar tissue, and how often you do your prescribed daily exercises. Physical therapists are true “teachers” there to teach you the exercises you need to perform and to demonstrate how to perform them perfectly, so you feel confident doing them on your own at least twice every day.

HOW LONG WILL I BE OUT OF WORK? CAN I DRIVE?

The type of surgery you have determines when you might be able to drive. The most important aspect of this decision is your safety and the safety of others on the road. First, you need to be able to safely get in and out of your car, so braces and slings will necessarily prevent the ability to drive. If you’re taking strong pain medications (narcotics, muscle relaxers, nerve medications) you shouldn’t be driving. You must have complete use of both arms and at least your right leg for driving safely and must be capable of slamming on the brakes in an emergency situation. Returning to work is a more involved discussion with your surgeon, as some procedures may allow for return to work within three days, while others will need weeks or months to adequately recover.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IF I DECIDE IDON’T WANT TO HAVE THE SURGERY?

It’s important to partner with an orthopedic subspecialist or spine surgeon who can expertly inform you as to the options and expectations of the different non-operative treatments and surgical options. An extensive exploration of non-surgical measures such as therapy, exercise, braces, appropriate medications, injections, activity optimizations, etc. can often help resolve orthopedic problems without resorting to surgery. Surgeons will typically push these measures as aggressively as appropriate, as it not only allows those who don’t need surgery to successfully improve but can also help those patients who need surgery be in a better physically and psychologically position to improve afterward.

SPINAL SURGEON MINIMALLY INVASIVE HELP FOR SPINAL ISSUES

ARE

THERE NEW METHODS FOR PERFORMING SPINE SURGERY?

There certainly are. In the last ten years, there’s been a push toward minimally invasive spinal procedures in which the portals for the incisions are much less destructive as the surgeon accesses the spine through a significantly smaller incision allowing for earlier recovery and mobilization. With these less-invasive surgeries, there’s less bleeding, less tissue destruction, less risk of infection, less pain, and a more rapid recovery.

WHAT SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY IS ALLOWING YOU TO PERFORM SURGERY IN THIS WAY?

Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital – Arlington has invested in a million-dollar Globus Excelsius Robotic Navigation System. This advanced robotic platform allows surgeons to be even more accurate with spinal instrumentation thereby making spinal surgery more precise for our patients. It also allows a less invasive approach to the placement of spinal instruments. The robot synchronizes preoperative CT spans with live intraoperative imaging to allow for more accurate surgical precision and better patient outcomes.

HOW WILL THIS SURGERY HELP MY SPINAL CONDITION?

The goal of any spine surgery is to treat and alleviate the underlying pathology affecting your quality of life. Surgery is selected to be the smallest surgical intervention for the best benefit and patient outcome. The Globus Excelsius Robotic Navigation allows us to select small surgical options for maximum benefit to the patient. One common spinal pathology is instability of the spine called Spondylolisthesis. The robot allows us to offer spine stabilizers in the effected segment of spine experiencing

instability and decompresses the nerve structures causing the symptoms to decrease significantly post-operatively.

AM I TOO YOUNG OR TOO OLD FOR SPINAL SURGERY?

There are no age parameters necessarily for spinal surgery, but we practice a conservative approach, only recommending surgery after all conservative treatment options have been exhausted. There’s not a specific age when surgery is recommended or not recommended, as physiological aging is different for everyone. Age is just a number. What matters is whether your problem is interfering with your quality of life and whether you’re medically able to undergo surgery.

IS THERE ANY HARM IN WAITING TO HAVE SURGERY?

That depends upon the problem you’re experiencing. There are a few true spine emergencies in which case patients are urged or required to undergo surgery. For the most part, spinal surgeries are elective in the sense that they’re aimed at improving or maintaining your quality of life. But if you’re experiencing neurologic deficits including sensory for motor, there is a risk of permanent or worsening neurologic deficits.

TELL US ABOUT A NEW ADVANCING TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS YOU EXCITED.

Intraoperative imaging is allowing surgeons to access real-time modifications to surgical procedures. Globus Excelsius at BSW Arlington is one such technology. It’s offering surgeons the advancement of minimally invasive technique to allow complex surgeries that otherwise would have been done through a large surgical procedure and required a lengthy hospital stays. It can now be performed quicker with more precision and with better patient outcomes.

BARIATRIC SURGEON YOUR NEW LIFE STARTS TODAY

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?

The ultimate goal for us is to see you live a healthier, safer life. Losing excess weight through one of our cutting-edge weightloss surgeries can also mean saying “good-bye” to obesity-related conditions such as sleep apnea, hypertension, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, and more. These are conditions which negatively affect your quality of life and often lower your life expectancy. Weight loss surgery can jumpstart your new, healthy lifestyle and improve your relationship, selfesteem, employment opportunities, and overall health and happiness.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT BARIATRIC PROCEDURES AVAILABLE?

Bariatric doctors are having success every day providing safe weight loss with the help of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, duodenal switch, and revision surgeries robotic. At Surgical Associates of Mansfi eld, we’re able to perform these procedures with the help of a state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic surgical system which allows these life-saving surgeries to be performed with very small incisions, fewer wound complications, less pain, faster and easier recovery, and superior outcomes.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY?

If you’re morbidly obese, over 35, and other treatments—including diet, exercise, and medication—haven’t worked for you, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery. Diets, pills, shakes, and fad diets have only a 5% success rate compared to 90% with bariatric surgery. An experienced bariatric surgery will take into account your age, weight-loss goals, and any other medical

problems before recommending which is the best procedure for you.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN I EXPECT TO LOSE?

Each patient is unique. It depends on how much weight you need to lose and how willing you are to partner with us and make the lifestyle changes necessary to lose weight safely—and keep it off. But on average our bariatric patients lose between 35 and 100 pounds and most maintain their weight loss.

ARE THERE RISKS WITH WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?

There are risks with any surgery. But when compared to the risks of living with obesity, the risks of bariatric surgery are minimal. The main thing to keep in mind is to have a skilled and reputable surgeon who can successfully address any risks that arise in a healthy and safe way. Very rarely do complications arise.

CAN I STILL GET PREGNANT AFTER HAVING WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY?

Absolutely and research suggests that weight-loss surgery before pregnancy can lower the risk to women and their babies of obesity-related problems during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes, blood pressure disorders, newborns who are large for their gestational ages, postpartum hemorrhage, and cesarean delivery. With recent fi ndings, it is recommended that you wait one to two years after bariatric surgery to become pregnant. Your OB-GYN should perform nutritional defi ciency testing before conception to determine your individual need for supplements, as well as monthly tests during pregnancy. But many women deliver healthy babies after bariatric surgery.

FOCUSING ON PREVENTION ABOVE ALL ELSE FOR OUR PATIENTS

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A DENTIST?

It can be extraordinarily difficult to find healthcare from quality providers, especially when we are presented with many options. We encourage patients to find a dentist that matches their own healthcare philosophy and can provide the services that they need in a comfortable environment. Modern dentistry has seen an explosion in the services available to patients and I would recommend a patient familiarize themself with them so they can understand if their doctor offers them. As healthcare has become increasingly driven by technology it is important to visit a provider that takes advantage of these changes to increase the quality of your care. Finally, you want a doctor that is committed to continuing to learn as the industry has changed.

WHAT IS THE BEST TOOTH REPLACEMENT OPTION?

This is a question I get perhaps more than any other. The answer is simple: for most patients, a dental implant is by far the best option to replace a missing tooth. No other procedure provides the function and comfort of a tooth like a dental implant. Done well and maintained regularly, a dental implant can last the patient’s entire life. This can be done at the same time the tooth is removed and with sedation to provide you the ultimate comfort while preserving your teeth.

WHAT CAN I DO TO AVOID DENTAL PROBLEMS?

I focus on prevention above all else for my patients. The best treatment is the one that was never needed. We advise patients to eat a diet low in carbohydrates while practicing high quality oral hygiene. Water fl ossers are a great tool to “up your game” as well. Regular dental visits are also a preventive measure, as your dentist and hygienist will often identify small issues before they become more serious. Many dental offices utilize high end technology like lasers and AI-based software to help you quickly identify and solve dental problems.

WHAT TREATMENTS DO YOU PROVIDE?

We provide nearly every dental procedure that exists in our offi ce. From simple fi llings and crowns to more specialized procedures like implants and root canals. We have multiple providers that provide all levels of sedation too. We have recently added laser therapy to help treat gum disease and Botox for cosmetics and jaw pain. We try our best to truly be a one stop shop.

GETTING YOU BACK TO THE LIFE YOU ENJOY

WHAT IS PAIN MANAGEMENT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Understanding pain is the first step in managing it. The goal of pain management is to minimize pain, rather than eliminate it because quite often it’s not possible to completely do away with pain. Two other goals of pain management are to improve function and increase the quality of life. These three goals go hand-in-hand. Pain management is important because it allows patients suffering from chronic pain to explore all their treatment options before committing to surgery. At Regency Pain & Therapy Institute we offer most treatment options under one roof for the convenience of our patients. There are many suitable treatment options for patients to choose from, including but not limited to physical therapy, manipulations, medications, procedures, injections, and surgery.

DO I NEED A REFERRAL TO SEE YOU AS A PATIENT?

In many cases you DO NOT need a referral from another provider to see one of our pain management specialists. You can simply call our office directly to schedule an appointment. The practice accepts most major insurance plans, and we have dedicated staff to help you fi gure out what’s covered by your particular plan.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

As a pain management specialist, I begin every new patient appointment with a complete pain evaluation. This includes developing a medical history, reviews of any tests or bloodwork, and a physical examination to help me better understand your pain. This initial evaluation is one of the most important parts of the pain management process because a full and complete assessment is a key component in developing a customized treatment plan. No matter the cause of pain or how long it has been present, a patient should

expect to have a better understanding of their pain and treatment options after the initial evaluation.

WHAT PAIN CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT?

Throughout my 16-year career, I’ve treated many acute and chronic pain conditions, and have successfully helped my patients manage neck and back pain, joint pain, headaches, nerve pain, and pain caused by injury or accidents. If a patient’s condition is something I can’t treat, I’ll work to get them set up with an appropriate specialist.

DO YOU HAVE A PROFESSIONAL MISSION STATEMENT?

My focus is to decrease a patient’s pain while increasing their productivity, minimizing medication use, maximizing physical activity, and improving their overall quality of life. I believe quality care is first achieved by performing a thorough physical exam and taking a detailed history of the patient to obtain the right diagnosis. Once diagnosed, I provide new patients with detailed information about their diagnosis and spend quality time with them making sure they understand everything. From that point, we work together to move forward with an individualized treatment plan. Often by the time a patient sees me, they’ve been to multiple doctors and may have given up on ever having their quality of life back. I want to partner with them and help them live a full, meaningful life again.

HAVE YOU BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELD OF PAIN MANAGEMENT?

Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege to be recognized throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area as a leader in the field of Interventional Pain Management. To be consistently acknowledged by both patients and peers for my personal and professional commitment to Excellence in Patient Care Delivery is the best compliment I can receive as a doctor.

AUDIOLOGIST HEARING HEALTH CARE MATTERS!

KOS/DANCHAK AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AIDS & ADVANCED HEARING AID CENTER

Melissa Danchak is a Doctor of Audiology and owner of Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids in Arlington, Texas and Advanced Hearing Aid Center in Fort Worth, Texas. KDA has been “helping North Texans hear better for over 35 years.” Dr. Danchak has been the owner of KDA for more than 20 years and owner of Advanced Hearing Aid Center for a year.

WHEN AND WHY SHOULD I GET MY EARS

& HEARING CHECKED?

Hearing loss occurs gradually over time. In many instances, by the time someone makes the decision to get their ears and hearing checked, they have not been hearing well or understanding clearly for over seven years!

Dr. Melissa Danchak, Owner/Audiologist at Kos/Danchak Audiology & Advanced Hearing Aid Center, encourages everyone over the age of 50 to have a baseline hearing evaluation, especially if it has been more than 2 years since your last hearing test.

WHEN WAS YOUR LAST HEARING TEST?

Regardless of age, if you fi nd it difficult to hear and understand clearly what is being said, especially when background noise is present, or if you have ringing in your ears (called Tinnitus), the best thing you can do for your hearing health care is to get your ears and hearing tested!

ARE HEARING LOSS AND DEMENTIA REALLY LINKED?

Over the last 10-15 years, the role of cognition in a patient’s overall hearing and communication performance has captured the interest of clinical and research audiologists.

The brain will compensate to overcome challenges brought on by hearing impairment. “In other words, the increased cognitive load can lead to cognitive deficits. Hearing loss is not normal, and neither is the extra workload that it puts on the brain. The brain is

constantly working overtime trying to fi ll in the blanks.”

WHERE SHOULD I GO FOR A HEARING EVALUATION?

For over 35 years, Kos/Danchak Audiology has been helping North Texans hear the best they can! “We are very humbled by the online reviews and recommendations our patients consistently share on Google, Facebook, and healthyhearing.com. Having them share their experiences helps others that are searching for hearing health care they can trust and believe in,” says Dr. Danchak.

“Call us. We will walk you through the process of hearing better. Visit our website. We have a lot of valuable information and engaging videos to learn from.”

WHAT

HEARING AIDS ARE BEST FOR ME?

The first thing to know is that there are levels of hearing aid technology available. The style and level of technology you may need is as unique as your fi ngerprint. Understanding the different types of hearing aids does not have to be overwhelming.

Dr. Danchak says, “at Kos/Danchak Audiology, we use the results of your hearing test to demonstrate the best fit for your lifestyle. Hearing aid technology can enhance clarity of speech – which is what most people need and want. They want to be able to hear and understand speech better. They want to clearly understand what is being said, especially when there is background noise present.”

A LITTLE MAINTENANCE CAN SAVE A BUNDLE

IS THERE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE THAT CAN EXTEND THE LIFE OF MY ROOF?

Tree limbs, leaves, and other debris love to make a home on your roof system. Unfortunately, this can harm your shingles and deteriorate your roof. You never want limbs scraping the shingles and loosening the granules. Keep tree limbs trimmed out of reach of your home’s roof. Depending on the type of trees in your yard you could have leaves, needles, or other tree debris accumulating onto your roof system. Routinely use a broom or leaf blower to keep debris off your roof. If not, they can trap moisture and cause mildew to form.

WHAT ABOUT MY GUTTERS?

Keeping gutters clean can save you money. Clogged gutters hold moisture which can grow mold and mildew. This not only makes them harder to clean, but it can spread to other areas of your home and create an insect nesting site. Since clogged gutters aren’t able to drain the water away from your home, you run the risk of flooding and water damage on the exterior of your property. Or trapped water can seep into the interior of your home and create problems. Additionally, when rainwater spills over your gutters instead of draining away from your property, it can rot your wood facia and trim and soak into the ground and soften your foundation which can cause cracks and make your foundation unstable ultimately costing you thousands of dollars.

HOW CAN I STORMPROOF MY ROOF?

Roofs are often the most affected structures when a storm strikes.

Shingles that aren’t fastened tightly can be blown off, leaving your roof exposed to the elements and water able to leak through. Make sure shingles are fastened with at least five to six nails and the waterproof underlayment underneath the shingles is securely in place.

From the shingles to the flashing to the gutters, it’s important to ensure your home’s barrier from Mother Nature is doing its job properly. A roof inspection is the best way to determine the safety of your roof system. Have a professional roof expert inspect and make any repairs to your roof system to make sure it’s secure before high winds and falling leaves make their way to North Texas.

HOW CAN I PREVENT ANIMALS LIKE SQUIRRELS FROM DAMAGING MY ROOF?

We already talked about keeping your gutters clean. Here’s another reason since clean gutters are less appealing to critters who may be looking through gutter debris for goodies. The next thing you can do is trim any trees that are close to your house to prevent animals from scurrying along the branches and ending up on your roof system potentially seeking a way into your home. Look for any tree limbs that are encroaching on your roof and cut them down in small sections to prevent a large branch from falling on your home or landscaping. While you’re up on your ladder, look around your roof for any missing shingles, loose flashing, or other suspicious roof mishaps. Squirrels love to chew and sharpen their teeth. It is easy to know when you see it. If you notice anything, call your local roof expert.

PERSONALIZED, COMPREHENSIVE MENTAL HEALTH SOLUTIONS FROM A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM

ARE WE REALLY FACING A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IN THE U.S., AND IF SO, WHY?

Yes, and it was exacerbated by the pandemic. People had an opportunity to evaluate what was most important to them during that time and are searching for more meaningful connections with family, friends, and the community. They desire a more fulfi lling, well-rounded life. At the same time, this has caused an identity crisis, and we’re seeing patients whose well-being is affected by this. My message to all is that it’s vital to proactively seek help before depression and anxiety set in and worsen. Think of mental health care as preventive medicine that helps you fi nd emotional well-being and be the best version of yourself before things snowball.

WHAT’S THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR IOP AND PHP PROGRAMS?

Sometimes people need a higher level of structured care than weekly therapy sessions. Our PHP (partial hospitalization program) provides the most intensive mental health care available without being admitted to an in-patient program. It includes four hours of group therapy fi ve days a week, nutritional wellness, psychiatric evaluation, active medication management, and much more. Our goal is to help patients who come to us unable to manage their stability to attain a healthy level of functionality in their daily lives.

Our IOP (intensive outpatient program) helps those going through a rough patch, such as life transitions and relationship issues, meet daily living requirements before the situation becomes more acute. It offers structured therapy and support and a healing journey with more flexibility and independence than our PHP.

WHAT IS A DUAL DIAGNOSIS PROGRAM, AND WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM IT?

Mental health disorders and substance abuse often go together. When someone struggles with stressors and mental health issues, they can be tempted to use alcohol or drugs to cope. This further impacts family and work and leads to an intertwined, downward cycle. We believe in treating the whole person versus just one aspect of their illness to help break the cycle. WHY IS EASE OF ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND SEAMLESS CONTINUITY OF CARE SO IMPORTANT?

Instead of trying to find different providers in various locations, such as a therapist, a psychiatrist, and a nutritionist, we offer everything under one roof. Just one phone call gives you access to different service lines and coordination among providers. Plus, we’re in-network with almost all major medical insurances. From a provider’s point of view, it enables them to offer a higher quality of care due to ease of collaboration and open, crossprovider communication.

WHAT ELSE SETS CONNECTIONS WELLNESS GROUP APART?

In addition to our innovative, integrated treatment model, we have a dynamic team of mental health professionals that work closely together, share ideas, and support one another to provide comprehensive mental health care.

WORLD BLOOD donor day

ROLL UP A SLEEVE TO SAVE LIVES ON JULY 14

Whenever there is a natural or man-made disaster, it is customary to hear offi cials request food, clothing, and other essentials for those affected. Inevitably, there is always an additional plea for people to donate blood to help those injured and needing transfusions.

Donating blood, however, is not just for catastrophic events. The American Red Cross estimates that someone needs a blood transfusion every two seconds in the United States, which means a hospital can require up to 44,000 donations a day.

Although scientists in England began a trial using whole blood to create red blood cells in a laboratory in 2022, medical science still has a long way to go before it can manufacture blood. Thus, the nation’s blood supply depends on the goodwill of donors who meet the health criteria.

According to medical experts, men can donate blood every three months, and women, whose iron totals are usually lower, can donate every four months. Blood donors must be 18 years of age. Those who are 16 or 17 can donate with their parent’s consent. The minimum weight for donating blood is 110 pounds. A pint of blood is taken each time, and the process from start to fi nish is about 45 minutes.

What people may not know is that donating blood is also an investment in their own health. There are several benefits for regular blood donors. It can reduce blood pressure and the risk of heart attack and stroke. It can help prevent blood clots that develop into life-threatening pulmonary embolisms.

It can lower the risk of liver, colon, throat, and lung cancers. And it enables people to feel good about themselves as one pint of blood can help save three lives. Believe it or not, donors also burn more than 600 calories during the process. Before donating blood, people are given a brief physical exam and asked about their health history. In most cases, those who have medical conditions under control are eligible to donate blood to help others and, perhaps someday, themselves. High blood pressure, for example, does not disqualify a potential donor if the hypertension is controlled by medication. The same is true of diabetics if the condition is under control. Most prescription drugs do not disqualify a donor either. Pregnant women must wait six weeks after giving birth before donating. People who have had the COVID-19 vaccine can donate, and so can those who have had COVID-19, although they must be symptom-free for at least two weeks.

There are people, however, who are not eligible for blood donation. Current cancer patients or those who have had blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma are excluded. Anyone with cardiac or lung disease, HIV, AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD), drug and alcohol addiction, Hepatitis B or C is also prohibited.

Becoming a regular voluntary blood donor is a simple step that everyone can take to support local health systems and save lives.

For more information on donating, visit redcrossblood.org.

MAKE THE connection

HOW HORMONES CAN AFFECT YOUR OVERALL HEALTH

Did you know your body makes more than 50 different hormones? These powerful, complex chemical messengers created by the endocrine system glands, as well as the testes and ovaries, regulate everything from mood, development, and growth to the sleep/wake cycle, reproduction, and metabolism. Even the slightest imbalance or hormone over- or under-production can wreak major havoc on our health and quality of life.

Various things affect hormone production and balance, including prescription medications and diseases like diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome — a rare condition, and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). And, of course, a major culprit that eventually affects everyone is age, which impacts the sex hormones — estrogens (estradiol, estrone, and estriol), progesterone, and testosterone.

You’ll experience different signs and symptoms depending on your hormonal imbalance.

Signs of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) include:

Nervousness, anxiety, and irritability

Mood swings

Sleep disturbances

Persistent tiredness, weakness

Heat sensitivity

Goiter (enlarged

thyroid gland)

Heart palpitations

Twitching, trembling

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) may create these and other symptoms:

Fatigue

Weight gain

Increased sensitivity to cold

Constipation

Dry skin

Puffy face

Muscle weakness, aches, tenderness, stiffness

Elevated blood cholesterol level

Impaired memory

Goiter

Thinning hair

Symptoms and signs of hormonal imbalances that affect your metabolism include:

Unexplained weight gain or loss

Irregular body fat distribution

Fatigue

Slow heartbeat or rapid heartbeat

Higher-than-normal blood cholesterol levels

Depression, anxiety

Intolerance to cold or warm temperatures

Dry, coarse skin and hair

Thin, warm, and moist skin

Extreme thirst, frequent urination

Sex hormone imbalance has been linked to:

Weight gain

Low libido

Hot fl ashes, night sweats

Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, cognitive issues

Loss of muscle mass

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

Mood changes, depression

Painful intercourse due to a lack of vaginal lubrication

Vaginal atrophy

Insomnia

Hormone problems cause a wide range of symptoms. See a doctor if you persistently don’t feel right, and especially if you have any symptoms of hormonal issues. Don’t be tempted to self-diagnose or use DIY treatments such as transdermal creams and oral supplements. You can do more harm than good without an accurate diagnosis and customized, measurable treatment plan.

Your primary healthcare provider is a good place to start, but it’s also wise to see an endocrinologist. These medical specialists are uniquely trained in endocrinology, a field of medicine that studies, diagnoses, and treats hormone-related conditions. Tools and tests used to diagnose endocrine problems include urine, blood, genetic, and hormone tests, as well as imaging, such as MRIs.

If you’re diagnosed with age-related sex hormone imbalance, seek a provider experienced in using traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and/or plant-based bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) who will regularly measure your hormone levels and adjust your treatment plan based on these and your reported results.

POST-WEIGHT LOSS procedures

THE SKINNY ON BODY CONTOURING AFTER SHEDDING POUND S

You’ve done it! You’ve lost weight, and now it’s time to celebrate your new body, but something’s holding you back — excess skin — and you’re not alone. With weight gain, collagen and elastin in the skin can become damaged, leaving it unable to fully retract after weight loss. Not only is this extra sagging, folded skin prone to rashes and even fungal infections, but it also makes it difficult to fi nd clothing that fits right.

Instead of living with additional skin for the rest of your life, check out plastic surgery procedures for a fi nishing touch that addresses this and other post-weight loss issues like droopy breasts. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will educate you about recommended procedures based on your goals and discuss realistic results.

The surgeries below are focused on a specific area of the body, but they may be combined if your plastic surgeon believes it’s safe for you to do so. For example, if you’re a good candidate, you can get a complete lower body lift that addresses the waist, thighs, hips, abdomen, and buttocks in one procedure.

TUMMY TUCK (ABDOMINOPLASTY)

This highly customized procedure removes excess abdominal skin and fat and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating a smoother and fi rmer abdominal profi le. Results can be dramatic.

ARM LIFT (BRACHIOPLASTY)

During an arm lift, excess sagging skin on the underside of your upper arm is removed. Supportive tissue tightens and smooths to reveal a shapelier upper arm. Ask your plastic surgeon about the different types of arm lifts available — full, extended, short scar, etc. Understand which one is recommended and why.

THIGH LIFT (THIGHPLASTY)

A thigh lift reshapes your thighs by reducing excess skin and fat. Several types of thigh lifts are available — inner, outer, vertical, and mini. Your plastic surgeon will explain which is recommended for you and may suggest including liposuction with your thigh lift to sculpt the area.

BUTTOCK ENHANCEMENT

During weight loss, your buttocks can go from rounded and plump to flat and saggy. Buttock enhancement can give you the curves and volume you desire. Options include a Brazilian butt lift, where excess fat removed from one area of the body via liposuction is injected into the buttocks. For some, a butt lift alone will suffice. This entails making an incision along the upper back, lifting the buttocks, and removing excess skin.

BREAST SURGERY

Weight loss often affects the breasts, leaving them deflated and droopy. Breast surgery, which includes breast reduction, breast lift, and implants, is designed to lift, restore, and reshape your breasts. Based on your goals, one or more of these surgeries may be combined to help deliver the results you desire to achieve.

Don’t Forget Your Face

When we think of plastic surgery after weight loss, we tend to focus on procedures that address the body. But changes in volume and skin laxity also apply to your face. Even moderate weight loss — 20 to 30 pounds — usually makes your face look thinner, but this reduction in facial and neck volume can create skin laxity and make wrinkles look more pronounced. Procedures designed to help these areas appear more refreshed and youthful include surgical face and neck lifts and minimally and noninvasive nonsurgical services. One of the nonsurgical solutions, among many, is Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound to lift and tighten the skin.

Pro Tip – Consult with a plastic surgeon who provides both surgical and medical-grade nonsurgical solutions. This way, they can truly recommend a plan that’s in your best interest and is most likely to deliver the results you desire.

DON’T BE alarmed

STAY SAFE WITH HOME SECURITY

Your home should feel like the safest place in the world. It’s where you spend time with loved ones, share laughter, and create memories. If you want peace of mind that your family and property are safe, a home security system can help.

About one in four Americans use a home security system, according to U.S. News & World Report. These systems may be unmonitored or monitored, and they may run the gamut from wireless cameras and video doorbells to 4K image sensors and video analytics.

You could set up your home security system or get it professionally installed, which can be ideal if you’re not particularly handy or tech-savvy. With professional installation, you can kick up your feet while a home-security expert sets up your system. Many security companies offer same-day installations and the peace of mind that it is done right.

Wondering what kind of home security options are out there? Here’s a breakdown of some of the available products. Pick and choose what suits your home security needs best.

Video doorbells. Whether you want to protect against porch pirates or keep an eye on package deliveries, doorbell cameras can help. Features vary by model, but many video doorbells provide night vision, facial recognition, voice control, and high-definition video. Some home security companies also offer optional storage plans that allow you to store motion-triggered video clips in the cloud.

Entryway sensors. When placed on doors and windows, sensors will alert you immediately if one opens when it shouldn’t. You can choose from wireless and wired sensors, with variations between contact sensors, glass-break sensors, and motion sensors.

Security cameras. These cameras may be mounted inside or outside your home, and you can choose to record continuously or only when motion is detected. Some cameras may feature two-way voice, mobile access with live streaming, pan and tilt, and a smartphone app that activates features, including a siren on the device.

Floodlights. Potential burglars can’t sneak around in the shadows if you

install security fl oodlights. Typically motion-activated, these lights feature super-bright LEDs and can be mounted quickly. Some floodlights include a built-in siren and may double as security cameras.

Panic buttons. This security option can be helpful during home invasions or medical emergencies. Just push a button to alert the company’s monitoring center. Some panic buttons offer two-way voice capabilities so that you can communicate with a dispatcher.

Automated options. If you want hightech home security, look for a company that lets you control everything from an app on your phone, Alexa, Google Home, or a smart panel. You can watch live or archived videos, arm or disarm your home, and check your system’s status from anywhere.

If you’ve been thinking about stepping up your home security, you have plenty of options. Whether you want to turn your home into an expertly protected fortress or want to deter potential break-ins or thefts, use the options above as a starting point.

DECISION Finding the Perfect Private School

An excellent place to begin searching for the right one is with parents you trust and respect, ones with similar parenting styles and priorities to yours. Ask them what they know about private schools in your area. Take time to contemplate your preferences. What are your must-haves? On what are you flexible?

Nothing is as helpful as seeing the school itself in action. Schedule a visit to the school, preferably while school is in session. Ask to visit a class in progress. Observe the energy level of the teachers and the students. Do students appear engaged? Are teachers and students enjoying lively interaction? What do you think of the facility and grounds? What’s the overall vibe on campus?

Here are some questions to ask during your school tour.

• What’s the school’s overall philosophy, academically, socially, behaviorally, and community-wise?

• What’s the academic approach?

• What’s the student-to-teacher ratio?

• What’s the experience/education level of the faculty?

• Is the school accredited? By whom?

• What STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) offerings are available to students?

• What extracurricular activities are available, and can most students participate in more than one?

rom the moment you discovered you were going to be a parent, you’ve had a decision to make. Cloth diapers or disposable? Breast or bottle? Nanny or daycare? Full or part-time employment? Each choice impacted you, your child, and the rest of your family. If you’re trying to find the best private school, all that decision-making practice is about to come in handy.

• How do teachers and the school keep in touch with parents, and how often does that happen?

• What’s the level of parental involvement? Am I welcome on campus and encouraged to be involved in my child’s education?

• If the school includes high school, what are the average SAT and ACT scores, total award amount of scholarships offered, and percentage of students going to college? Are there courses available that are considered more challenging, like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and dual-credit courses?

Feel free to ask for names of current or past parents you may call to ask about the school. Ask them why they chose this school and whether they’ve been pleased with their decision. What are some of their favorite aspects of the school? Ask if you may call recent graduates or their parents. Inquire how prepared they felt for college. Did they feel more prepared than some of the students they saw around them?

After your tour, revisit your priorities and the questions you had. How do the things you found at the school align with what you’d hoped to see? What was your gut feeling about the school, administration, and teachers? The school you select will become a large part of your child’s and your family’s lives. Take time to have all your questions answered, and don’t feel pressured to decide until you know what’s right for you.

A safe bet

A BRIGHT SUMMER IN BROKEN BOW, OKLAHOMA

Sightings can’t be planned, but Bigfoot roams near Broken Bow. The Southeastern part of Oklahoma seems to be a magnet, drawing the illusive creature to the forests and springs. Gift shops sell the t-shirts. Local news reports the sightings. In 2021, an Oklahoma state representative even fi led a bill to create an official Bigfoot hunting season. But more than a nexus of living lore and centuries-old legend, Broken Bow is a getaway for families chasing outdoor fun. It’s come a long way. In 1911 two Nebraska loggers named the town after their own home and started processing trees. Before that, the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce says Choctaw people lived in villages there and called the area Con-Chito. Today a part of the Choctaw Nation, the area is a gateway to a beautiful wilderness that includes Beavers Bend State Park at the base of the Kiamichi mountains.

In those gentle rolling foothills, Broken Bow is the entrance to a well-loved woodland hideout. It’s a retreat with naturally secluded digs and a greenwood playground for all ages. Just three hours north of Dallas, the small town saw a surge in home buying and building in the last two to three years, which continues today as Broken Bow grows in popularity.

BEAVERS BEND STATE PARK

At Beavers Bend State Park, 180 miles of pine forested shoreline surround Broken Bow Lake and Mountain Fork River. Visitors can jump into canoes and kayaks, available for rent inside the park, for a two-and-ahalf-hour float. They can also dive or go boating. The park keeps trout plentiful in crystal-clear streams for fi shing year-round too. Fishing guides are often hired outside the park and brought in by those eager to learn. Hikers venture out on a dozen hiking and nature trails of varying diffi culty for the sprightly and the sluggish alike.

Just a few miles up the highway, you can rent boats, slips, and jet skis at Beavers Bend Marina or an ATV at Bandits. For golfers, the 18-hole Cedar Creek Golf Course books out weekend tee times online up to a week in advance or a month in advance by phone. Walk-up times are available on weekdays. Horseback riding is popular, as is ziplining, each offered by multiple area outfitters.

FOOD AND DINING

Hungry travelers fi nd a lot to feast on in Hochatown, a resort area just 12 minutes north of Broken Bow by car. Everybody likes pizza, but they must put something in the water at Grateful Head Pizza Oven & Taproom. The praise they receive hints at local gem status. “You have to stop at Grateful Head when you arrive and when you leave,” said one yearly visitor, echoing many a Broken Bow adventurer to go on record about the parlor. Grateful Head is located in an old school house and serves what many say are must-try, delectable pies.

Visitors also give the local wine tasting room Girls Gone Wine another big helping of applause. Winners in a sort of David and Goliath triumph against an infamous video franchise, the GGW vintner’s got to keep their name despite opposition from the franchise’s millionaire owner. Girls Gone Wine ferments its own fruity wines and offers free wine tastings at its dog-friendly boutique.

At The Eat Out, lucky guests park their fannies in barside rope swings or chairs on the cozy outdoor patio. The restaurant offers a “chef-driven menu” focused on creativity (think peanut butter on your patty) and traditional burgers. Upscale dining at Abednigos has become another top recommendation in the area, among many other dining options.

LODGING

Chalets offer a wide array of “luxury” lodging and simple abodes. One three-story cabin styled as the “Slideaway Hideaway” in Hochatown boasts multiple hot tubs and indoor slides, including one massive twisting tube from the third to the fi rst floor. On the opposite end of the spectrum, quaint cottages with the bare necessities pepper the landscape with rustic charm. Nearby campsites, RVs, and lodges round out accommodation options. Beavers Bend State Park itself offers advance booking (up to 11 months early) for 60 cabins, over 375 camping sites, and a 40-room lodge.

Planning a getaway that pleases everyone in your group can be a bit of a gamble, but Broken Bow is a safe bet for the whole family. Just watch out for Bigfoot.
