25 LOST

POUNDS IN 3 MONTHS.

I've tried so many diet plans that just didn't seem to fit what I was looking for, or just didn't work at all. I found myself feeling sick at the weight I was at, while I was trying to lose the weight. Hearing about Diet Solution Center from my daughter Michaela, and seeing her weight loss I decided to give it a try! Since starting Diet Solution Center I've lost a total of 25 pounds in just 13 weeks. I've never felt more comfortable than where I am at! Diet Solution Center has given me more confidence. A huge thank you to Dr. Knight and Michaela for all their help and encouragement! Without that I wouldn't have results and I have today! Thank you to all the staff at Diet Solutions Center.

We have any number of safe, family-friendly communities from which to choose and political leaders who serve unselfishly and with an eye toward advancement and innovation. This month, we hope you’ll enjoy our “Best of” edition as chosen by you, our readers. We asked for your choices in 150 categories including local dining, retail, entertainment, healthcare, and home and garden businesses. And for the eighth year in a row, the response was overwhelming. Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a business. We think you’ll be pleased with our 2021 “Best of” winners. Let me close with this reminder from the Lord.

The city of Mansfield rocks as literally thousands of people were able to enjoy a premium fireworks experience from all sectors of the city. Fourth of July weekend provided a variety of entertainment options that featured not only a dazzling fireworks show, but a dog parade, movie night at The LOT Downtown, a farmers market, and a home run derby at Big League Dreams. Summer in Mansfield continues to be a festive time, but our city continues to pay close attention to a menacing pandemic that threatens public health. We thank the hard-working people who serve as real life heroes that work daily to protect our citizenry. Speaking of heroes, Mansfield's Emergency Medical Services Chief Kevin Sandifer was awarded the Jesse Fernandez Front Line Leadership Award for his leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Chief Sandifer has been

instrumental in positioning the Mansfield Fire Department to act as both a public health entity and an emergency response body. We are grateful for his service. Speaking of service, the award-winning Mansfield Independent School District (MISD) will officially kick off the 2021-2022 school year with its annual Back to School Bash, which takes place from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 7. At the bash, school supplies will be provided free of charge to MISD students. More info can be found on the MISD website. Lastly, MISD will officially dedicate three new schools in August: Brenda K. Norwood Elementary School, Alma Martinez Intermediate School, and Charlene McKinzey Middle School. Yes, the summer is almost over, but the fun never stops in Mansfield.

Grand Prairie City Manager Tom Hart will retire at the end of October 2021 after successfully leading the City of Grand Prairie for 22 years. Tom created the city’s popular and successful mission to Create Raving Fans by Delivering World Class Service, and will leave a legacy of service, integrity and commitment to people. While City Manager in Grand Prairie, Grand Prairie grew in population from 118,000 to 200,000. Tom has overseen the reconstruction of the historic Uptown Theater and construction of the Texas Trust CU Theatre, the Ruthe Jackson Center and Gardens, Grand Prairie Memorial Gardens, Tony Shotwell Life Center and Library, Prairie Paws Adoption Center, the Splash Factory, the cabins and lodge of Loyd Park, Alliance Skate Park, the Public Safety Training Center, Municipal Courthouse, the Public Safety Building, the Summit Active Adult Center, Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark, PlayGrand Adventures, downtown façade improvements, City Hall Central and

GRA ND PRAI RI E campus renovation, and The Epic Arts, Fitness and Entertainment Center. Most recently, voters approved a $75 million Economic Development Bond Proposal, ensuring Tom’s vision for Epic Central to be a destination hub for entertainment, the arts, recreation and food, by adding two hotels with a shared conference center, a Grand Lawn, and restaurants along the lakes. The City of Grand Prairie is fortunate that Tom has had a succession plan in place for some time. He has prepared his Deputy and Chief Operating Officer Steve Dye to be ready to step in and continue the many great projects that are in the works. I wish only the best for Tom in his retirement as he continues to teach customer service classes, explore new business opportunities, enjoys travel with his wife and time with grandchildren. You don’t have to look far to find a happy story in Arlington, Texas. Here’s one that made me smile. Local artists, Eddie and Mary Phillips, recently made a whimsical addition to Meadowbrook Park’s sculpture garden with their interactive art piece, “Brighten My Day,” a Kaleidoscope of Grandeur. Their art installment is an actual oversized kaleidoscope park visitors can peer through to enjoy a riot of changing color. I hope you’ll swing by and see it. The giant kaleidoscope joins other unique sculptures in the garden including "The Sea" by Otello Guarducci, “Leave Your Mark” by Janna Tidwell, “Blue Sky Dream”

by Seth Vandable, “Dragonflies” by an uncredited artist, “Fern Fronds” by Pascale Pryor, and “TexScape” by Rock Romano. It’s been fun watching the sculpture garden grown and we can’t wait to see what’s next. I want to say a big “thank you” to everyone who’s helped make my first days as your mayor so warm and welcoming. My team and I are feeling more settled in each day and excited about serving you and your family. Please, let us know how we’re doing and how we can make The American Dream City an even better place to live, work, worship, and play. august 2021

AUGUST 3 // VALEDICTORIANS AT THE GATE: STANDING OUT, GETTING IN, AND STAYING SANE WHILE APPLYING TO COLLEGE BY BECKY MUNSTERER SABKY After spending years as an admissions director at Dartmouth, Becky Sabky had seen it all. The perfect grades, the perfect scores, and the perfect extracurriculars. Valedictorians were knocking at the gate, but Becky realized that in their quest for admission, many of these students were missing something. Their transcripts were golden, their interviews polished, but they weren’t applying for college — they were competing for it — and in the end, didn’t know what prize they were striving for.

In Valedictorians at the Gate, Sabky looks beyond the smoke and mirrors of the intimidating admissions gauntlet and places the power firmly where it should be — in the hands of the students themselves. Offering prescriptive, actionable advice for students and their (hopefully not helicoptering) parents, Sabky illuminates the pathway to finding the school that is the ideal match. Witty and warm, informative, and inspiring, Valedictorians at the Gate is the needed tonic for overstressed, overworked, and overwhelmed students on their way to the perfect college for them. YOUR PLAN TO CONQUER CHRONIC PAIN SHOULD START WITH BAYLOR SCOTT & WHITE ORTHOPEDIC AND SPINE HOSPITAL

O

vercoming chronic neck, back or joint pain can bring incredible improvement to your quality of life – but not if you put off dealing with it. Some have endured the pain for so long that they have forgotten what “normal” feels like.

Does this sound familiar? If so, you (or a loved one’s) relief begins with having a plan and then taking action. Your plan begins with a place. Arlington is fortunate to have one of the nation’s top-rated facilities for treating and solving the issues that cause these types of pain. Helping people “get back to normal” is Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital – Arlington’s reason for being. This unique, industry-leading specialty hospital centers on comprehensive outpatient and inpatient treatment and provides orthopedic surgery, spine treatment, joint replacement, diagnostic imaging, pain management, sports medicine and physical therapy and rehabilitation. This is Dallas-Fort Worth’s only hospital that concentrates strictly on providing orthopedic and spine care. This allows Baylor-Scott & White – Arlington to provide a safe, serene and focused health care environment to reduce the tension or apprehension patients might feel about going to a hospital. Combining exceptional care with personal attention and compassion is the hospital’s priority, whether treating a simple neck strain or a complex joint surgery. The

boutique-style facility offers an exceptional staff and 10 operating rooms, complete diagnostic imaging capabilities, and a Pain Management Center. The hospital also has a full-service ER open 24/7 making it a great alternative for emergency care. The hospital provides an optimal environment for all patients thanks to its state-ofthe-art multi-stage air fi ltration system that kills viruses right in the air. For all inpatient rooms and operating rooms, UV lighting systems scan the rooms after each cleaning to eliminate all types of bacteria that might remain. Operating rooms are equipped with new double HEPA filtration, and aerobiotic machines clean the air and decrease particle counts in each room. Baylor Scott & White – Arlington’s staff take extraordinary measures and wear appropriate PPE at all times, ensuring patients are protected. Even with state-of-the-art systems to ensure your health, the hospital takes temperatures at the door, masks are provided, and social distancing is encouraged. As always, if you do feel sick, please stay home and protect others.

THE REVIEWS ARE IN – AND THEY ARE STELLAR The hospital recently received a fivestar “high performing” rating from U.S.

News & World Report, and for three years straight (2019, 2020, 2021), Healthgrades has awarded it the prestigious America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award™. Healthgrades also awarded the hospital with its Patient Safety Excellence Award™ (2021, 2020, 2019), recognizing that it is among the top providers in the nation for excellence in patient safety for preventing infections, medical errors, and other complications. These high scores are thanks in part to reviews from actual patients following care. In patient surveys, Baylor Scott & White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital received an overall rating of 9 or 10 from 86% of patients, and a “Would definitely recommend” rating from 87% of patients Both of these ratings are 17% higher than the national average from other hospitals.

TECHNOLOGY & ROBOTICS The hospital’s commitment to superior treatment is symbolized by its use of advanced technologies. Every patient is unique and has their own individual anatomy, which means measuring for precise bone and joint fit is crucial to recovery, mobility and long-term comfort. Baylor

Scott & White – Arlington utilizes multiple systems to help your specially trained surgeon custom-tailor the placement of your knee or hip implant just for you. They use several different robotic platforms for the treatment of Total Joint and Spine procedures and also use advanced imaging for customized implants This precise implant fit is important to your comfort and overall experience following joint replacement surgery. These systems use data collected before and during surgery to inform your surgeon and care team of nuances of your unique anatomy that may affect your implant fit. By using this data to make more informed decisions, your surgeon is able to plan for and carry out a personalized surgery based upon your individual needs. This leading-edge technology helps Baylor Scott & White – Arlington improve your total care experience. Before surgery, 3-D

models of your bone and joint anatomy to help your surgeon plan for specifics of your operation. During surgery, your doctor will perform the procedure to guide the robotic systems’ every move with precision and the best decisions for your care, with cameras and computer tracking to understand the exact position to place your implant with the utmost accuracy. This leads to better outcomes after surgery, with activities such as driving after just two weeks, gardening after three to four weeks, and golf after six to eight weeks. In other words: You can get your life back.

YOUR PLAN TO CONQUER PAIN You may have put up with your pain up to now, but those days can be over. When you are ready to get back to getting around, Baylor Scott & White – Arlington is ready too. Visit www.bswarlington.com for a full list of physicians, services and to schedule an appointment.

LESSONS FROM THE BOOK

of Esther

PA R E N T I N G YO U R C O L L E G E -AG E C H I L D BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

s I raised my second, third, and fourth child, I always thought I’d know how to handle each developmental stage since I’d already been there, done it. But each time, I was surprised to realize how little I knew, remembered, and understood. Of course, my four children were remarkably different. Haley O’Hara, our first and therefore (we tease her) “experimental child,” was easy and compliant, eager to do the right thing and make her mom and dad happy. Then, came Molly who lived to test the boundaries and rewrite the rules. She was a bundle of spunk and sparkle and cheek, which made me question daily everything I thought I knew about parenting.

Next, was Hewson who was all large-motor skills and independence. He required — and accepted — little assistance from us, but, fortunately, as long as he could run, jump, kick, climb, and explore, he had no interest in breaking the rules or causing a fuss. God is full of delightful surprises, and in our middle age, He led us to adopt Jonah (pictured). Partially because we’re older, more mellow parents and partially because that’s just how God made him, Jonah is an old soul with a bent toward loving the unlovely, gathering in stray people, and just generally making the world a kinder place. His childhood was a breath of fresh air, and I did whatever I could to slow it down. Lo and behold, though, last fall, it was time for our Jonesy Boy to head off to college. We were thrilled when he chose to attend a small, Baptist, liberal arts college. But his new school would have him four hours from home, and I learned, once again, that just because I’d already sent three kids off to college, it didn’t mean I knew squat about letting my sweet boy go. I turned to God for guidance, and He offered it from an unlikely source, opening my eyes to Mordecai in the Book of Esther. Here was a father who allowed his own adopted daughter to leave and live in the palace yet remained a guiding force in her life, even parenting her from outside the palace walls. Consider this. Esther 2:11 tells us, “And every day Mordecai walked in front of the court of the harem to learn how Esther was and what was happening to her.” Mordecai kept tabs on his daughter without a cell phone or social media and remained near and available should she need him. I had mixed feelings as Jonah’s freshman year advanced, and we heard from him less and less. On the one hand, it meant he was feeling more confident and finding his way. On the other, it reminded me I was almost out of a job. Back in the Book of Esther, Mordecai continued to challenge, instruct, and inspire his daughter, even after she moved to the palace and became the queen and even when she didn’t necessarily want to hear his admonition. As Esther left for the palace, Mordecai instructed her to keep her Jewish identity to herself (Esther 2:10), and she obeyed him “just as when she was brought up by him.” (Esther 2:20) Once she was queen, he got word to her when the king was in danger. “And this came to the knowledge of Mordecai, and he told it to Queen Esther, and Esther told the king in the name of Mordecai.” (Esther 2:22) And he did not hesitate to challenge her when he learned of Haman’s plot to annihilate the Jews, speaking hard truth with authority. “Do not think to yourself that in the king’s palace, you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:13-14)

ALTHOUGH YOUR CHILD MAY HAVE MOVED BEYOND YOUR PROTECTION, THEY’RE NOT OUTSIDE OF YOUR INFLUENCE. THE TRUTHS YOU’VE PLANTED IN THEM REMAIN.”

The book even has a word for empty nesters wondering what’s next for them. “For Mordecai, the Jew was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers.” (Esther 10:2-3) Mordecai’s life didn’t end when his child left home, and neither will yours. Although your child may have moved beyond your protection, they’re not outside of your influence. The truths you’ve planted in them remain. Although you’re not parenting in the flesh daily, you’re still likely the person who prays most fervently for them. Ask God to give you — as He gave Mordecai — peace as you watch from afar, discernment to know when to speak and even reprimand, and wisdom as you transition into this new chapter of parenting. And above all else, never stop praying, praying, praying for this child the Lord has given you. august 2021

PROFILE servative treatment before considering surgery. “I’m passionate about limb salvage,” he said. “I work closely with Dr. Van Dyke, an endocrinologist as well as with the practitioners at Methodist Wound Care Clinic, working to prevent limb amputation and I’m on call at both hospitals 24/7 for anyone needing foot and ankle attention. But surgery is always our last consideration.” Dr. McCabe and his team place an emphasis on personalized care. “The feedback I receive most is about the time I take to really listen to my patients,” he said. “Medicine is about balancing what the patient wants with what the patient needs. If I really listen, they’ll tell me what they want. Years ago, physicians were people the community could lean on and look up to as leaders. I’d like to restore the physician’s place in the community.” No two days are the same for this award-winning podiatrist. “The great thing about podiatry is it encompasses a wide variety of pathology,” Dr. McCabe said. “Although I’m focused on the foot and ankle, I’ll see diabetic patients, patients with deformities, patients with arthritis, fractures and everything in between. I’m in the clinic four days a week and surgery one day a week. On a surgery day, I might do a bunion procedure, fix an ankle fracture, do a complex muscle or skin flap, an ankle scope and a hammer toe, all in one day. The varying nature of podiatry keeps it fresh, challenging, and interesting.” When not on the job. Dr. McCabe enjoys time outdoors with his family. “I love to hunt and fish,” he said. “I joke that, during duck season, work is what I do between duck hunts. I do want to give a big “thanks” to my wife, Brooke. Without her, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.”

r. Matthew McCabe and his wife, Brooke, have been blown away by the welcome they’ve received, since opening his private podiatry practice in Mansfield. “We feel incredibly blessed to be here,” he said. “We can’t think of a better place to raise our four kids.” A former high school athlete, Dr. McCabe learned early about foot and ankle injuries. Now as a fellowship-trained podiatrist, he takes seriously his role of educator to his patients of all ages. “It’s important for me to educate my patients on available options—conservative and surgical—to review expected outcomes of each option and collaborate with them to find the right plan for them. Bottom line—if I wouldn’t recommend it to my mom, I won’t recommend it to my patient.” Although, Dr. McCabe is specially trained in limb salvage, reconstruction, and orthoplastics (a relatively new specialty that marries plastic surgery techniques and or-

thopedics) and dual board certified by American Board of Podiatric Medicine and American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, he believes in exhausting every viable con-

BRAIN

games G I V E YO U R M I N D A G O O D WO R KO U T BY PET E ALFANO

re you the type of person who enjoys playing mind games? Not the kind where you try to antagonize or mess with someone’s head, but games that stimulate your brain and give it a good workout. There are a few things you should know ahead of time that eliminate any misconceptions about how our brain works and the benefits derived from brain exercises. First, let’s separate fact from fiction. A survey completed in 2013 found that 65% of Americans believe the longheld notion we use only 10% of our brain. But according to neurologist Barry Gordon in Scientific American, we use most of our brain all the time, depending on what we are doing. It’s working even when we sleep. Physical exercise is a key component to having a healthy brain, which applies to people of all ages. Exercising your brain is not just for older people having an increasing number of senior moments. From yoga and tai chi to dancing, biking, jogging, swimming, or simply going for a walk, any physical activity is as important for maintaining a healthy brain as it is for your heart and other bodily organs. Then, of course, there are ways to improve cognitive health while you are sitting down. Crossword and jigsaw puzzles are popular choices. Crossword puzzles can improve vocabulary and knowledge. Jigsaw puzzles improve visuospatial function, which is the ability to see where the pieces of the puzzle belong.

From poker and bridge to gin rummy, hearts, solitaire, Go Fish, Uno, and war, every card game makes you think and tests your memory. Which cards have been played? What cards might the other players be holding? Board games such as chess and checkers, Concentration, Clue, and Monopoly can challenge your mind as well. If you prefer technology, popular apps are another option. Lumosity may be the best known. It offers dozens of games that test your speed, memory, attention span, and problemsolving ability. Among others are BrainHQ, CogniFit Brain Fitness, Sudoku, and Mind Games. Some are free, while others have a minimal cost. Reading also gives your mind a workout. A book stimulates the brain because it makes the reader visualize the characters and setting. Meditation may also reduce the decline of cognitive function. Find a quiet place and turn off personal electronics, so they don’t interrupt. Tune out all the background noise in your life. Be alone with your thoughts, and you may find it easier to solve problems. Meditation can be calming, which reduces stress. Learn a new skill or language. Didn’t we all want to be rock stars at one time or bilingual? Go ahead and sign up for guitar lessons or begin studying French, Spanish, or a more challenging language with different alphabetic symbols. Or take on a do-it-yourself project around the house. Remember, a healthy mind and body are like ham and eggs. They go well together.

CHECK-UP

checklist NEWBORNS THROUGH TEENS: A GUIDE TO WELL-CHILD VISITS BY D AVI D BU ICE

ne of the most important things any parent can do for their child’s health is to schedule regular well-child visits with their pediatrician, in addition to doctor visits when they are sick. A minor health issue today could become a major problem tomorrow if not addressed.

WHAT IS A WELL-CHILD VISIT? Sometimes called a checkup or a physical, a well-child visit is a medical exam given to children from newborn to late teens. Well-child visits enable your pediatrician to examine your child holistically, assess their physical and emotional needs, support their growth and development, and intervene quickly if they find any problems. Schedule them at close intervals during your child’s first years of life, then once a year after your child has reached age three if they are healthy and don’t have any chronic medical conditions.

RISKS OF SKIPPING WELL-CHILD VISITS If your child is generally healthy, it’s easy to let wellchild visits fall by the wayside, but pediatric specialists insist they are essential for various reasons, including to ensure your child gets the required vaccinations to go to daycare, attend school, and participate in sports. Visiting your pediatrician when your child is well also gives you a chance to ask questions and get expert answers about your child’s health, development, and well-being. Additionally, many common developmental delays can be discovered during these routine visits, and early inter vention can make a sig nif icant difference in getting your child essential care before something small turns into a much greater issue.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A WELLNESS VISIT Your child’s pediatrician will: Determine if your child is meeting growth and developmental milestones for their age. Evaluate your child’s sight and hear ing. It ’s important to catch these issues early. Ask about sudden changes in your child’s usual activities, mood, and overall health. Assess your child’s mental health, asking questions about how they are coping with school, friends, family, and any other outside influences.

Well-child Visit Benefits

Provide immunizations for diseases and conditions that affect children and teens, such as measles and HPV.

Regular well-child visits may seem like just another thing to include in your family’s already hectic schedule but skipping them can put your child at greater risk of illness or delay needed interventions.

Give sports physicals to children who want to participate in competitive sports at school or in the community.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the following are some of the benefits of regular well-child visits.

Help your child establish healthy habits and provide tips for parents to reinforce these at home. Provide age- and behavior-based counseling to teens on topics such as depression and drug and alcohol use. Check on how your family is doing overall and help identify any supportive resources if needed.

SCHEDULING WELL-CHILD VISITS

Prevention – Your child gets scheduled immunizations to prevent illness, and you can ask your pediatrician about nutrition, safety in the home and at school, and other matters

Tracking growth and development – See how much your child has grown since your last visit and talk with your doctor about their development. Discuss your child’s milestones, social behaviors, and learning.

Raising concerns – Make a list of topics to discuss with your

child’s pediatrician, such as their development, behavior, sleep, and eating, or relations with other family members. Present your top three to five questions or concerns to the pediatrician at the start of the visit.

Then at one, two, four, six, and nine months

Team approach – Regular visits create strong, trustworthy

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends this schedule for well-child appointments.

relationships among pediatricians, parents, and children. The AAP supports well-child visits as a way for pediatricians and parents to serve the needs of children. This team approach helps develop optimal physical, mental, and social health of a child. Younger children, understandably, may fear doctor visits. However, parents can ease some of these fears by “playing doctor” with a toy doctor’s kit and using age-appropriate books to teach children what will happen during their visit. Also, regular well-child visits show your child that each time they see the doctor doesn’t mean they always get a shot. august 2021

ccording to the American College of Prosthodontists, around 178 million American adults are missing at least one tooth, while approximately 40 million Americans have no teeth. It’s no wonder that dental implants are growing in popularity.

THE ABCS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS (SORT OF) A. The Actual implant comes first. This is a metal post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. It is placed in your jawbone to provide a base for the artificial tooth. B. The aButment is next. It is placed above the gum line and connects the implant to the new tooth. C. The Crown is the realistic artificial tooth that the world will see when you flash your smile. The crown is made especially for your mouth.

WHY CHOOSE AN IMPLANT INSTEAD OF A BRIDGE? Tooth replacement has been around since 700 BC, but until dental implants arrived on the scene, no option addressed a missing jawbone. The bone grows around the implant (osseointegration), providing support for jaw health. Dental implants can have up to a 95% success rate. Most implant posts are made of titanium, although some are ceramic and are meant to last a lifetime. The average bridge lasts ten years, though many need to be replaced after only five. Bridges and dentures are designed to replace the look of missing teeth, but either lack a natural appearance or lose it over time. Bridges, unlike implants, may cause an increase in cavities around the surrounding teeth and can also compromise the longterm health of adjacent teeth by removing the enamel and placing additional force on them. Getting one or more dental implants can help you avoid difficulties with eating or even speaking. Each tooth is important, and a single missing tooth can cause your face to sag, your cheeks to sink, and your mouth to shrink from a loss of jaw support. This is often called facial collapse.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants also provide the security of having “rooted” teeth. They feel, function, and look like natural teeth, and they require no special care. Brush and f loss as you normally would.

CAN YOU GET A NEW SMILE IN A DAY?

WHY IS SOONER BETTER THAN LATER? The longer you wait to replace a missing tooth, the more bone you will lose, which can prevent your ability to get a dental implant or increase the likelihood that you’ll need a bone graft before the implant can be placed. Even the loss of a single back molar can cause your other teeth to shift, and the area may become difficult to keep clean, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and potentially the loss of more teeth.

Your health history should be evaluated. Some conditions can impact healing following a dental implant procedure. People on medications such as steroids or immunosuppressants may not be good candidates either. However, most people are good candidates, so schedule a consultation to see if you are a fit for the procedure. Following your initial consultation, it may be possible to get one or more dental implants in a single day. However, if you have any periodontal disease, it will need to be addressed before getting implants. Additionally, bone grafting may be required if your jawbone isn’t thick enough due to bone loss.

PAYING THE TOOTH FAIRY Check with your dental insurer to see if dental implants are covered. Many dental practices also offer their own membership plans. An annual membership fee may include some basic exams, cleanings, and X-rays, plus a discount on other dental services. If you have a flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA), you can tap into some tax-free funds. If not, your provider may offer a payment plan.

WHICH BREAST PROCEDURE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? BY M IMI GR EENW O O D KNI G H T

f you’re like most women, when you stand before the mirror, there are things you’d like to change. If it’s your breasts that have you less than satisfied with your shape, you’re not alone. A recent study reported in The Journal of Body Image found that of 18,541 women surveyed in 40 countries, nearly half said they wanted larger breasts, more than 20% said they wanted smaller breasts, many wished to change the shape of their breasts, and most reported that dissatisfaction with their breasts affects their self-esteem.

Happily, we live in a time when a skilled plastic surgeon can change the shape and size of what nature gave us and offer us the larger, smaller, shapelier, or less droopy breasts we want. But how do you decide which procedure is right for you? Let’s look at the options.

BREAST AUGMENTATION Also known as breast implant surgery, breast augmentation involves placing silicone or saline implants into the breast to enhance its size, shape, and volume. A less common type of breast augmentation is fat transfer. Breast augmentation offers a perkier, fuller, more symmetrical, and appealing breast. Patients report better fitting-bras and clothes and a boost in self-confidence that lasts for years.

BREAST LIFT This procedure doesn’t involve implants but manipulates your existing breast tissue to lift and tighten your breasts, reduce sagging or drooping, and improve symmetry. If you were relatively pleased with your breasts before childbirth, weight loss, or aging, a breast lift could restore

your natural, youthful, perky breasts. However, it doesn’t enhance the fullness of the top of your breasts or increase your cup size. You need implants for that. It’s common to combine the two procedures to add fullness with implants and reduce sagging with a breast lift.

BREAST REDUCTION Breasts that are too large can lead to any number of health issues such as neck, back, shoulder problems, migraines, and tingling in the arms. Large breasts also make it difficult to enjoy fun fashions since you’re often limited to what you can fit into. And forget about finding a comfortable or adequate sports bra. Breast reduction surgery may be the answer. This procedure removes excess fat, tissue, and skin from your breasts, giving you the pert, shapely breasts you’ve always wanted. A successful reduction can eliminate chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, improve your self-esteem, make sleeping more comfortable, allow for a more active lifestyle, improve your posture and breathing, and make it possible to enjoy a greater assortment of fashions again. Of course, deciding to alter your breasts is a personal decision, and no surgery should be entered into lightly. Research the procedure you’re considering. Spend time consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast surgery. Talk to them about your reasons for considering surgery and the goals you hope to achieve. Breast surgery isn’t the end-all-be-all to happiness. But if having the breast shape and size you want helps you love your body more, it can certainly improve your life.

GOTCHA

covered THERE ARE A LOT OF OPTIONS FOR NEW ROOFS BY CH E RYL AL E X A N D E R

f you’re in the market for a new roof, too few options will not be a problem. New technologies and innovations now make it possible to have just about any look you desire, no matter where you live. When choosing roofing materials, consider the following questions: How heavy is this material? Does it require special framing? Does it come in a variety of colors and styles that complement your home? Does it meet the fire codes in your area? Are there any installation and maintenance issues? Does it perform well in your climate? What is the cost, life span, and warranty? The answers to these questions, along with the following information, will help you determine the best choice for your home.

homestead | GOTCHA COVERED

ASPHALT SHINGLES Pros: Asphalt comes in a variety of colors, is widely available, and is one of the least expensive materials. Cons: Typically has a shorter life span than other roofing materials, doesn’t provide the insulation other materials offer, and the quality varies. House Styles: Work with many architectural styles, especially traditional styles. Cost and Life Span: From $70 to $120 a square and, if maintained properly, shingles will last 20 to 25 years. (In roofing terms, a square refers to 100 square feet of roof or a roll designed to cover 100 square feet of roof.)

CLAY AND CONCRETE TILES Pros: Long-lasting and non-combustible. They are great options for hot climates where salt air and high winds are present. Cons: They are expensive, heavy, and usually require additional framing. House Styles: Work well with Mediterranean, Mission, and Spanishstyle homes. Cost and Life Span: Runs $200 to $800 and clay $500 to $1,000 per square installed. Life expectancy is 50 to 100 years.

METAL ROOFING Pros: Durable, lasts longer than asphalt or wood, and offers high solar reflectance. Cons: Relatively expensive, and installation may be an issue with some companies.

SYNTHETIC ROOFING PRODUCTS

House Styles: Looks great on bungalows, cabins, contemporary and cottage-style homes.

Pros: Often they are not as fragile, heavy, or expensive as natural products.

Cost and Life Span: Starts around $100 to $300 a square, but some styles can cost $600 to $800 a square. Metal roofing can last 40 to 75 years.

Cons: Some products can absorb water, and the quality varies. Newer products aren’t as time-tested as traditional materials.

SLATE

House Styles: Work well with different architectural styles.

Pros: Durable, fire-resistant, and a sustainable roof material that can be recycled.

Cost and Life Span: Starts at about $300 a square and are usually warrantied for up to 50 years.

Cons: Expensive, heavy, and requires extra framing and professional installation. The quality can vary with imported slate.

GOING GREEN

House Styles: Work well on homes with Colonial, European, Tudor, and French chateau architecture. Cost and Life Span: Starts at about $600 a square and up. Slate can last more than 50 years and sometimes 100 years or more.

WOOD SHINGLES AND SHAKE Pros: Wood shingles offer a rustic look and are a natural product usually made from cedar, redwood, or southern pine. Cons: Fire codes in some areas prohibit their use. Wood shingles can be a concern in wet climates and can mold, split, or rot. House Styles: Rustic aesthetic pairs well with bungalow, Cape Cod, cottage, Craftsman, and Tudor-style homes. Cost and Life Span: Shingles — about $4.50 to $9 per square foot, installed. Shakes — around $6.50 to $11 per square foot, installed. In dry climates, a wood shingle or shake roof can last 60 years. In damp conditions, maybe 20 years.

A g reen roof is a layer of veget ation planted over a waterproofing system installed on top of a flat or slightly sloped roof. Green roofs are also known as vegetative or eco-roofs. Pros: A living roof offers improved air quality, less pollution, better insulation (reducing heating and cooling costs), water conservation, and wildlife habitat. Cons: Expensive to install. Reinforcing the roof of an existing home can necessitate expensive structural changes. Improper installation, inadequate drainage, or roots penetrating the protective membrane can cause leaks. House Styles: Work with many different architectural styles. Cost and Life Span: Depending on intensive, extensive, or semi-intensive, costs range from $10 to $50 per square foot. The average lifespan when properly maintained is 40+ years.

The fashion-conscious know the cost of a new wardrobe often depends on whose name is on the label. But that potential sticker shock doesn’t compare to a college graduate’s cost of a cap and gown. This price tag can exceed $200,000. Nowadays, there is a high price to pay for higher education as costs continue to soar, leaving many graduates saddled with debt as they enter the job force after graduation. According to collegeboard. org, the average price for one year at a public institution in 2020/2021 is $22,180, including tuition, fees, room, and board. That number can often be more than double for a student attending a private university. If you were wondering, the average cost per year for tuition and living expenses at public universities in Texas exceeded $19,000 for in-state residents and more than $26,000 for out-of-state students. The price tag for tuition and fees at private universities such as SMU, Baylor, and TCU averages $50,000 per year. Working part-time as a server at a local restaurant or finding a full-time summer job isn’t going to cover much of the tab. Some students are fortunate that their parents pay for all or part of their college education. For the rest, financial aid is not just an option but a necessity. There are several ways of finding financial help, ranging from scholarships to loans. Scholarships can be merit-based or awarded on financial need. And by scholarships, we mean those based on academic achievement. No matter how good an athlete your son or daughter is, the sobering truth is that less than 2% of high school athletes receive an athletic scholarship, and most of those do not cover the total cost of a college education.

Websites such as scholarships.com and studentaid.gov are excellent resources for students and parents to begin their search. In addition to scholarships, grants are another source of financial aid. Grants are free money that doesn’t have to be repaid unless stipulations are attached, such as the requirement to graduate. Federal and state governments are a source of grants, as are private organizations. Pell Grants, for example, are based on financial needs using a formula that considers the parents’ income and assets. It does not mean that parents are required to contribute financially to their student ’s college education. Studentaid.gov also lists work-study programs as a means of obtaining financial aid. Under this program, students are provided with part-time jobs that help defray some of their education costs. Undergraduate students who participate in a work-study program are paid an hourly wage that will be at least as much as the federal minimum wage. If you don’t qualify for a scholarship, grant, or work-study, there is always the option of a federal or private college loan. But the borrower beware. This is not free money. Students are expected to pay back the loan with interest. It is estimated that the average student debt from loans exceeds $37,000. The website studentloanhero.com estimates that almost 45 million Americans have student loan debt. And there are serious consequences for those who default on their college loans. It will reflect on their credit rating, making it more difficult to borrow money for a car or house going forward. The lender may garnish the borrower ’s wages or claim any federal or state income tax refund. If the loan required a co-signer such as parents, they become responsible for the unpaid loan, which could wreak havoc on their financial standing. What students and their parents should know, however, is that there are ways of securing financial aid so getting a college education becomes a reality. In addition to websites that make it much easier to sort through the various options, students can also talk to their high school counselor for guidance. And don’t wait until their senior year in high school. The process should start much sooner so students and parents can find the financial option that works best for them.

HIT THE ROAD TO THE ORIGINAL ROUND TOP A N T I Q U E S FA I R BY C O URT NEY WARREN

’d say I’m a pretty good mixer. I love people, love to hang out, and share good times. But when it comes to The Original Round Top Antiques Fair, which is the ultimate good time to my vintage-loving heart, I must draw the line. It’s not that I don’t want to share the experience with friends. It’s just that it’s hard to socialize when I am moving at warp speed from one antiques-filled shop, tent, fi eld, and warehouse to another! Thousands flock to Round Top, Texas, in April and October each year for what has been billed as the nation’s largest antiques and vintage show. Located midway between Houston and Austin near Carmine, you’ll wonder how thousands of shoppers can fit in a town with a population of 90. But the fair is actually spread over several small towns along an 11-mile stretch of Highway 237.

There is a bit of confusion over when it’s open because no official body governs the fair. One of the field owners recently posted this online: Round Top Texas Antique Show — only two venues charge admission, and a few charge for parking, but some offer free parking. Some venues are open for two to three weeks, and others are only open for a week. The event has over 65 venues and encompasses about 21 miles. Each venue is independently owned & operated. Clear enough? Both the April and October shows take place officially over a couple of weeks and unofficially include weeks before and after. Some businesses in the area are now open year-round. The April 2021 show was a huge success, thanks to truckloads of masks and sanitizer. The show from October 25th through the 30th promises to be the biggest yet. How big? Think Canton’s First Monday on steroids times the number of Friends reruns on TV. Even if you stay the entire two weeks of the show, you cannot possibly see it all. Here are a couple of other things to remember from a Round Top veteran. First, this vintage shopping mecca is in rural Texas, so be forewarned that cell phone service is spotty. And it may be tough to find a bathroom that can’t be carried away on a truck. But don’t let these small inconveniences deter you. If you can soldier through, you will experience the most unique flea market experience anywhere. Are you looking for old neon signage or French linens? Vintage cowboy boots or estate silver? European antiques with glowing patina or rusting American hay rakes? Maybe your collection needs just one more ironstone pitcher. Or bread tray. Or camera. Paper ephemera? Antlers? Oil portraits? I can’t begin to describe the incredible variety of goods I always fi nd at Round Top. I haven’t started to see it all, even after years of shopping there — besides, the inventory changes with every vendor’s new finds. au ug gu u ss tt 2 20 02 2 11 || LL II VV II NN GG MM AA GG AA ZZ II NN EE .. adventure | FANTASTIC FINDS

HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE SPOTS AT THE ORIGINAL ROUND TOP ANTIQUES FAIR: Where: Bar W Field Warrenton Types of finds: Flea market finds, good deals. Know before you go: Bring cash, comfy shoes, and maybe a hat because the fields get dusty.

Why we love it: You’ll find fantastic deals and really interesting pieces. Where: Roundtop Square, by Royers Cafe Types of finds: A charming square of small shops and businesses. Know before you go: There is a separate freestanding Royers Pie Haven location when you need to sit for a delicious snack.

Why we love it: Enjoy a nice afternoon of browsing, a public restroom, and a picturesque old church that makes for a great photo op.

Where: Townsend Provisions Types of finds: Darling gift shop that also houses an extensive collection of vintage cowboy boots. Know before you go: If you’re hungry, eat next door at Garden Co. In fact, eat there even if you aren’t hungry. It is fantastic. Why we love it: Lots of cute tees and gifts to bring home to friends who missed the trip. Where: Blue Hills at Round Top Types of finds: Fabulous booths with higher-end antiques, rugs, art, eclectic finds.

Know before you go: Parking is free here, easy in and out. Why we love it: If you need a big-ticket item, this might be a good place to look. Where: Marburger Farm Types of finds: Higher-end finds. Know before you go: If you’re a big name or celebrity in home decor, start shopping here. At the last show, Chip and Joanna Gaines bought frames from a vendor friend of mine. This is the only location on the list that charges a ticket price to get in. It’s not always open at the same time as other shows, so check before you plan your trip. Currently, the dates are posted for October 26th through the 30th.

Why we love it: Marburger has a little more expensive finds but also things you won’t see in other places. If you’re up for purchasing a ticket (only $10 per person for general admission), it’s worth it just for the experience. Visit Roundtop-Marburger.com for more information. Where: Excess Field ABOUT THE WRITER Courtney Warren is a Waxahachie interior designer whose awardwinning work has been featured in numerous national magazines and media and whose clients span the North Texas area. She believes,“You deserve a beautiful home you can be proud of, and it doesn’t have to be complicated.”

Types of finds: Industrial, unique pieces. Know before you go: Shop this in the morning. There is little shade, so hot afternoons can be brutal.

Why we love it: Quirky finds. Where: Paul Michael and surrounding stores. This collection of indoor antique stores sells high-end, expensive, and unique antiques, including vintage finds, European antiques, old signage, and neon signs.

Know before you go: One of the few that have covering, this is a good one to shop when it’s raining. Go around lunchtime and try the huge lunch buffet. Most of these stores take debit and credit cards.

Why we love it: You’ll definitely see things you can never get somewhere else. For more information about the fair visit, RoundTopTexasAntiques.com.
