I’ve always loved September. When I was a girl, it meant the start of a new school year. Even as that starting date has inched back almost a month, I still love it for its endings and beginnings. September marks the end of summer and the treasured family memories we made. At the same time, it marks the beginning of the beautiful season of fall which will ultimately lead to the holidays and—hooray— more family time! Our September issue is our Texas issue and a great chance to celebrate being “American by birth and Texan by the grace of God”. I hope you enjoy our stories on Texas food, Texas landmarks, Texas trivia, Texas-fashions, and some goodold-fashion Texas-style fun. This is always an exciting issue for us, and we hope it is for you as well. One last thought on September. Did you know the second Sunday in September is Grandparents Day? One of the sunniest blessings in my life is being “Mimi” to six grandchildren, each bright and beautiful in their own way. They have added innumerable blessings into my life. To quote Author Lois Wyse, “If I’d known how wonderful it would be to have grandchildren, I’d have had them first.”

In fact, 39 schools increased their scores by at least one letter grade and 95% of schools received an A, B or C rating. This is astounding considering the disruptions our schools and educators have faced, due to the COVID 19 pandemic. I couldn’t be prouder of the outstanding educators, administrators, and school staff who’ve work tirelessly to provide our kids with one of the best educations available in this country. Keep up the exceptional work!

The Last Picture Show is both a rambunctious coming-of-age story and an elegy to a forlorn Texas town trying to keep its one movie house alive. Adapted into the Oscar-winning film, this masterpiece immortalizes the lives of the hardscrabble residents who are threatened by the inexorable forces of the modern world.

Houstonian Wes Anderson’s first feature film, Bottle Rocket , is a quirky crime comedy based on Anderson’s 1994 short film of the same name. Written by Anderson and Owen Wilson (who met at the University of Texas at Austin), the film was primarily shot in Dallas and is the acting debut for brothers Owen and Luke Wilson and features their older brother Andrew Wilson in a smaller role as Future Man. Although the film was not a box office success, Martin Scorsese listed it as his number seven pick in his top ten movies of the 90s.

TEXAS TUNES
This wonderfully inventive, compelling novel set in Texas is both serious and funny. Louis Sachar weaves a narrative puzzle that tangles and untangles until it becomes clear that the hand of fate has been at work in the lives of the characters — and their forebears — for generations. It is a darkly humorous tale of crime, punishment, and redemption.

HOW DO I LOVE my neighbor? BY SHANON THOMAS LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF – MATTHEW 22:39 22 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | september 2022 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE
23september 2022 | LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET
“We can start by embracing the fact that every human is created in the image of God. As such, we are all loved, valued by God, and worthy of being treated with dignity.”
Pastor Shanon Thomas is the Senior Pastor at Rockwall Friendship Baptist Church in Rockwall, Texas. He’s served as pastor since founding the church in 2004. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor that has preached and taught for over 30 years, with a particular focus on teaching young adults and married couples. He resides in Rockwall with his wife Sophia and son Zachary
Fred McFeely Rogers is a name that may not be immediately recognizable. He is most affectionally known as Mister Rogers. A well-known and lovable character from the show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Rogers appeared on all 895 episodes and composed over 200 of the songs performed on the show. One of his most notable songs is “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” The song’s message is that everyone is valued and welcomed in the neighborhood. While we can learn from Mister Rogers’ example, the Bible provides a commandment regarding the treatment of our neighbors In the book of Matthew, Jesus is questioned by religious scholars and experts about which commandment is the most significant. He is asked, “Which command in the law is the greatest?” The question was a test intended to trip up Jesus. The religious scholars and experts were well versed in the scriptures. They doubted the authority and knowledge of Jesus. To their disappointment, he could not be tricked or confused. In response, Jesus provides two commandments that are the foundation for all other commandments. The first to love God with our entire body, soul, and mind. The second is to love your neighbor as Whileyourself.easilyinterpreted, this commandment has significant meaning and challenging practical application. The word “love” used in this verse originates from the Greek word Agapaō. It can be described as a love that is selfless, unconditional, unmerited, and unfailing. This means there is no circumstance under which this love is not active or ceases. It is the same love God has for all of humankind. A love where humans are the undeserving benefactors of his care and affection. Christ sets a high and excellent standard for the treatment of others. How do we put this kind of love into action?
We can start by embracing the fact that every human is created in the image of God. As such, we are all loved, valued by God, and worthy of being treated with dignity. We are diverse, uniquely nurtured by our culture, nationality, and society, but all equal as image-bearers of God. We love our neighbors by valuing them as God values them. When we value our neighbors, we treat them with dignity, compassion, and understanding. Exemplifying this love toward our billions of neighbors is our privilege and work to carry out. Loving our neighbors is not reserved only for those we know and share things in common. It is the limitless compassion we are to have for all people without condition. We can give this love through a kind gesture to the unknown neighbors we encounter. A quick prayer when hearing disturbing news and headlines. Spending time getting to know neighbors different than we are. Examining ourselves and addressing barriers and blind spots that keep us from being the neighbor Jesus commands. Desiring to see our neighbors relieved of their pain, tragedy, and suffering. Challenge yourself to bring the words of scripture to life by putting them into action. Now is the time to take action. Consider how you can begin today to love your neighbor.
Father, show me how to see my neighbors. Teach me how to love them in ways that speak of you. Allow your love to spread in my actions, thoughts, and the words I speak. As I do, may my neighbors know you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

When Al isn’t working, he and his wife, Shalyn, enjoy attending local theater productions, Fort Worth symphony, ballet concerts, and traveling. If you’re looking for a partner to help you achieve your short or long-term goals and protect what you value, look no further than Al Clark and his award-winning State Farm team.
– ALBERT SCHWEITZER
“THE ONLY ONES AMONG YOU WHO WILL BE REALLY HAPPY ARE THOSE WHO HAVE SOUGHT AND HOW TO SERVE.”
A l Clark is many things. He’s a devoted husband and father. He’s an Arlington business leader and community volunteer. He’s a national award-winning insurance agent and experienced advisor. And those who know him will attest, he’s an all-around good guy. For 43 years, Al has built one of the most successful State Farm Insurance and Financial Service offices in the country mentoring many younger agents along the Educationway. is important to Al, whether he’s counseling with a client on the best coverage for their home, life, and auto, guiding an up-and-coming agent in their career path, sponsoring college scholarships for area children, or lavishly supporting University at Arlington. Lovers of the theatre, Al and his wife, Shalyn, are longtime patrons of Theatre Arlington, serving on their board of directors and happily donating $100,000 to their recent remodel and revitalization. And the local YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and Salvation Army depend on the Clark’s generous support each year. For Al, it’s all about living out the State Farm motto, like a good neighbor. “We want to make the place where we live better by being that good neighbor,” Al said. “This community has been good to my family and me and we’re always looking for ways to give back. I love my career because I love helping people protect their families and possessions and realize their financial dreams. It’s really true what they say—love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

CELEBRATING 43 YEARS OF SERVICE TO
“My goal early in life was to plan my fi nances so I could retire comfortably by the time I was 55,” he said. “Through saving, budgeting, and investing, I did achieve that goal. But the truth is, I enjoy working on my business, working with people, and making a difference in their lives. I’ve had a rewarding business career. The employees I’ve had the opportunity to work with each day have been a pleasure. Meeting clients and friends over the years, being able to offer service in time of need and provide counsel in times of grief or disaster has been extremely rewarding. And the recognition I’ve received within my industry has been humbling. The value of the contributions I’ve been able to make for scholarships and gifts to the community have fulfilled my desires to make a difference in the life of many people. So, I may never retire. But if that time does come, I’ll still need something to do to make a difference.”
THE COMMUNITY.
Since Al launched his Arlington State Farm Insurance agency in 1979, hard work and a fi rm belief in the services he provides has helped him live out that adage and have kept him consistently in the top ranking of agents around the country. “I work with clients who’ve been with me for years and become like family,” he said. “I’ve been blessed to work with parents, then as their kids grow up, they become my clients, too. In fact, after 43 years, I’m now serving three generations of some families. Nothing is more encouraging to me than when a loyal client recommends me to their friends, family, and coworkers.”

Our stomach has one essential job — to digest the food we eat and send it to the small intestine. But what we put into our stomach can make that job more complicated and exacerbate problems ranging from an old-fashioned tummy ache to acid reflux disease, peptic ulcers, and in some rare cases, cancer. Food isn’t the only culprit for the gut-wrenching discomfort we can experience in our stomachs. That old health nemesis stress, as well as lack of sleep, anxiety, and depression, can get your stomach churning. So does the overuse of anti-infl ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen. If problems persist, then it is time to visit a gastroenterologist. Numerous tests are available to determine the cause of your gut pain. They include a barium swallow to look at the stomach and esophagus, a lower barium enema for the rectum and intestines, an endoscopy, which is a tube inserted in the throat under anesthesia that enables a doctor to view the esophagus and stomach, a colonoscopy, and various imaging tests. The goal is to make your stomach’s job as easy as possible.

Finally, calcium carbonate is what you pop into your mouth when acid indigestion is mild and occurs infrequently. You chew a couple of Tums and usually get relief quickly. Calcium carbonate can be taken several times a day, while medical experts recommend that an H2Blocker be taken no more than twice a day. PPIs are generally taken once daily, typically in the morning before eating. Doctors say that none of these medications should be used for longer than two weeks at a time, and please, no mixing or matching. You can reduce their effectiveness if you take multiple medications. Finally, consult your physician about possible interactions with other medicines you take. Stomach These Medications?
40 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | september 2022 wellness | GUT CHECK
What is your remedy of choice when your stomach is misbehaving? Do you prefer proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or a histamine-2 receptor blocker H2-Blocker? Maybe, your preference is calcium carbonate. You probably do not know these over-the-counter medicines by their chemical classifications. You might recognize PPIs by brands such as Nexium (esomeprazole) and Prilosec (omeprazole). A popular H2-Blocker is Pepcid and Tums is calcium carbonate. Does it matter which one you PPIstake?such as Nexium and Prilosec work by reducing stomach acid and treating acid reflux. These medications are taken daily and take longer to work because they are intended for frequent, chronic heartburn. An H2-Blocker like Pepcid also reduces stomach acid and helps prevent peptic ulcers. It is also effective in reducing a bout of acid reflux. It is intended for occasional heartburn but not a chronic problem.
While the stomach’s job seems simple, in practice, it is a complex organ that is home to what medical science has found to be between 300 and 500 types of bacteria. Some are bad bacteria, but most are the good kind and necessary for proper digestion and a healthy immune system. So, what can make the job of these so-called “gut bacteria” harder? Eating too much processed food. A diet high in sugar. Spicy food, over-eating, eating too quickly, yo-yo weight gain and loss, and undiagnosed food allergies can all contribute to the discomfort you may feel after eating. And while none of those things will cause a peptic ulcer, they worsen symptoms. A peptic ulcer is usually caused by an infection of the Helicobacter bacteria – one of the good kinds. Burning pain in the pit of your stomach, heartburn, bloating, and nausea can be signs of a peptic ulcer. But be aware that symptoms of acid reflux are like those of heart disease.
The key to a healthy stomach is eating a balanced diet with more fi ber and less high-fat foods. Studies show that Americans consume only 40 to 50% of their daily allotment of fiber. Avoid foods your stomach has difficulty digesting, limit alcohol and caffeine, and try to reduce stress, manage your weight, and get enough sleep.
A more common disorder is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This occurs when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus, which is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Frequent bouts of acid reflux disease can irritate the esophagus lining and make swallowing difficult. Untreated, chronic GERD may even lead to esophageal cancer. Other GERD symptoms include chest pain, a burning sensation in your chest, and the feeling that you have a lump in your throat. Unfortunately, coffee, caffeine, alcohol, and acidic and fried foods all tend to aggravate acid reflux disease, so consume them at your own risk.

LEADING PLASTIC SURGERIES OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS
42 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | september 2022 aesthetics
Almost anyone who longs to correct or enhance something about their physical appearance can do so today with plastic surgery if they’re a good candidate. Benefits include improved self-confidence and looking as rested and vibrant on the outside as you feel on the Accordinginside. to the American Plastic Surgery Society’s 2020 Plastic Surgery Statics report, more than 2.3 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in the U.S. alone. Although nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) took the #1 spot that year, and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) came in second, breast augmentation usually tops the chart. Looking at the last fi ve years, the most common — yet highly customizable — surgical procedures are the same, although the comparative percentages vary year to year.

Eyelid Surgery (blepharoplasty) – Sagging, heavy upper lids, bags underneath the eyes, and droopy lower lids can make you look tired, gloomy, sad, or even mad. Depending on your goals and personal needs, surgery can be performed on your upper lids, lower lids, or both. Check out before and after pictures of a plastic surgeon’s actual patients. Look for telltale signs of less than stellar eyelid surgery, including an unnatural change in the position of the eyebrows and a hollowed-out look created by removing too much fat around the eyes.
Liposuction – Several nonsurgical body contouring options are available these days, but when dramatic results matter, liposuction is generally the preferred method. This suction technique used to remove fat from specific areas of the body is also convenient for a plastic surgeon to use in conjunction with another surgical procedure, such as a Mommy Makeover, to sculpt a shapelier silhouette.
Choosing Surgical Over Non-surgical Cosmetic Procedures
Breast Augmentation – Breast implants are used to increase breast size, address asymmetries, improve general breast shape, and reverse the loss of fullness due to pregnancies and aging. Today, women have more choices than ever in terms of implant size, shape, and projection, as well as the type of implants available, from saline-fi lled implants to more natural feeling next-generation silicone-gel options. Most breast implant procedures take one to three hours to complete as outpatient surgeries. If you’re uninterested in implants, ask your plastic surgeon about breast augmentation via fat transfer.
Facelift (rhytidectomy) – Often combined with subtle liposuction to improve contour around the jawline, some facelifts can turn back the clock up to 15 years when performed by an experienced, talented plastic surgeon. Highly customized to the patient, they vary from advanced procedures like deepplane and SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) facelifts to minimally invasive mini facelifts that offer faster recovery times.
44 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | september 2022 aesthetics | PEAK PROCEDURES
Choosing surgical versus nonsurgical procedures usually comes down to results and longevity. Also, some, like a tummy tuck or Mommy Makeover, don’t have a good non-surgical alternative. When weighing options with your surgeon, remember to discuss the following points. How long should the results last?
Nose Reshaping (rhinoplasty) – Because the nose is a facial focal point, even people with decently shaped noses get them tweaked with cosmetic nose reshaping for a more perfected look. Regardless of the things about your nose you wish to address — including perceived changes in the nose due to aging — choosing the right plastic surgeon for nose surgery is imperative. Look for a board-certifi ed plastic or facial cosmetic surgeon who is highly qualified and experienced in nose surgery with good outcomes.
In general, surgical cosmetic procedures last longer than non-surgical services that may require regular maintenance procedures or touchups to maintain results. Can the changes be dramatic? Surgical procedures such as nose reshaping, mommy makeovers, breast implants, and facelifts typically help you achieve more dramatic, noticeable results. This doesn’t mean, however, that your results can’t look natural. What is the typical recovery time? Surgery can be more intensive and thus require a longer recovery period. However, keep in mind that plastic surgeons often offer less invasive procedures such as mini facelifts and endoscopic brow lifts, which typically require less time to recover.

Luckily, plenty of fruits and vegetables grow extremely well in Texas. In fact, in 2021, Texas was listed as the state with the most farms at over 247,000 across the Lone Star State, according to the Texas Field Office of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Our main crops include cotton, corn, and feed grains, but plenty of delicious citrus fruits, vineyards, olive and pecan orchards, and more. Here are some foods that grow best in Texas if you want to plant a garden or eat locally grown produce and like knowing what’s in season.
PEPPERS September is the perfect time to plant peppers in Texas, right before chili season. Red, green, orange, and yellow peppers are a good source of vitamins C and A and minerals, according to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Sweet peppers, like Bell Tower and Gypsy, and hot peppers, like jalapenos and long red cayenne, grow well in warm weather. Plant them about 12 to 16 weeks before the fi rst expected frost.

GRAPES Whether you live in Texas wine country or not, it’s evident that grapes are a big crop in the south. According to the Texas Wine & Grape Growers Association, Franciscan priests established the fi rst vineyard in North America in Texas around 1662. So, we’ve been enjoying delicious grapes and homemade wine for 360 years. According to Austin.Eater.com, most Texas grapes are grown on the Texas High Plains due to the hot summers and cool nights that balance grape acidity.
CORN According to the Texas Corn Producers, millions of acres of corn are planted and harvested annually in Texas. Usually planted between January and June and taking 120 days to mature, this includes many varieties, such as field corn (used for cornstarch, ethanol, plastics, and more), sweet corn for eating, and white and specialty corn, typically used for corn chips and tortillas, among other things).
BLACKBERRIES Easy to grow, blackberries handle hot weather beautifully and produce good fruit in spring, summer, and fall, making them one of the best fruits to grow in Texas. This sweet berry comes from biennial plants, which are flowering plants that take two years to complete a life cycle.
PECAN Don’t forget pecans grown on the Texas state tree. Millions of pounds of these sweet, soft-shelled nuts are harvested annually, according to the Bullock Museum. They’re used for candy, cookies, breads, salads, and, of course, delicious pecan pie. IN show BETTER IN TEXAS, INCLUDING THESE FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND NUTS SYDNI ELLIS

Texas is known for its relentless summer heat, but it has been known to frost and snow on occasion, too. For gardeners, it can seem impossible to know what to grow in these conditions. It must withstand extreme heat and random freezes as well to survive here.

It’s an open secret — some fi lms about Texas are shot elsewhere. Texas movies fi lmed here are less common, but that doesn’t mean they don’t make up a long list. Big-screen-worthy locations from well-known movies span the Lone Star State from east to west, so we came up with a handful of suggestions to help you see Texas through a whole new lens. Big country and rugged scenery get the star treatment enough to merit an outdoors category. We did our best to pick places where you’d want to spend at least an hour for our historical category. HISTORICAL Ghost stories are rife at the Gonzales County Jail Museum. Cells inside were used for scenes from The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, the story of a Tejano folk hero, but it was also where the real-life Gregorio Cortez would have been held. The old cells and cold breezes gusting through make this location chilling and interesting.
