Looking for a good night’s sleep?
Do you suffer from chronic snoring or sleep apnea? If the thought of wearing a breathing mask while you sleep doesn’t appeal to you, here’s some good news. Many people with sleep apnea can benefit from a more subtle form of treatment: an oral appliance that is made just for you. This lightweight device fits over the teeth and slightly repositions the jaw to unblock the airway. It’s a more comfortable and less noticeable way to get a good night’s sleep—and it may be right for you!
Looking for an Alternative to CPAP? Contact Dr. Sandi Hamm at 817-477-4441 to schedule a FREE consultation!

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
JAMES 1:17
Of course, there have been trying times, too. And we’ve had to say “good-bye” too soon to some loved ones who went on to their reward. But more than anything, the Lord has blessed us and grown us through the beginning of this century, and we’re excited to see where our journey takes us next. Here’s wishing you and yours a blessed and bountiful 2020 as we look—amazingly—forward to the next decade of the 21st century.

How can it be that this year marks the end of the second decade of the 21st century? It doesn’t seem real. So many wonderful things have happened in my life, over the past 20 years. I’ve watched each of my children leave home and start their adult lives. The Lord blessed me with a loving, Christian husband beyond my wildest dream. Together we’ve been blessed with precious, priceless grandchildren and—thanks to the support of this community—we’ve realized wonderful success with this magazine. Our community has grown by leaps and bounds and welcomed many new families

Grand Prairie is looking forward to great things in 2020: • Open PlayGrand Adventures, a playground for people of all abilities. • Manage resources within the 3.5% property tax cap imposed by the state of Texas, which means few improvements and possible discontinuation of services in future years. • Implement new online permitting software for Planning, Zoning, Building Inspections and Code Compliance. • Promote the 2020 Census to accurately count Grand Prairie residents, securing vital federal funding. • Ask voters whether or not to continue the ¼ cent Crime Control District Sales Tax. • Through a private-public partnership, develop two hotels with a conference center and restaurant row in Epic Central Park. • Expand the Lone Star Trail west from Beltline Road to Wildlife Parkway; build the Great Southwest

It’s a new year and things are looking bright in the American Dream City! With so much going on in and around the city, we want to shine a light on one local program that’s teaching Arlington boys the importance of good manners. My Little Gentleman Etiquette Classes are fun and interactive events where boys ages five-12 can learn good manners, grooming, and other etiquette skills to help them grow into polite young men. Classes include guest speakers who work with the boys on skills such as proper handshakes, eye contact, and respectful behavior for formal occasions, proper grooming, even skills like how to tie a tie. Hats off to Arlington Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator Jheron Thompson for leading these classes which culminate in a formal graduation where parents are invited to celebrate their sons’ achievements. Thank you, Mr. Thompson, for your investment in Arlington’s future. Another bright light is the “kindness benches” project

Mayor
COOK
R E FL ECTS O N M A N S FI E L D S UC C ESSES AS HE E MB RAC ES A NE W OPPORTU NITY.
It is the start of a brand-new decade and I am taking on a huge new opportunity. I have filed to run to be our State Representative in the Texas House. District 96 covers portions of Mansfield, Arlington, Burleson, Crowley, Fort Worth and Kennedale. Although I have officially resigned as Mansfield’s Mayor to begin this important new work, I will continue to serve until such time as my successor is sworn in. This dramatic change has given me the chance to reflect back on all that has happened here in Mansfield while I served as Mayor. When you elected me in 2008, my goal was to have the City come together and to work together in order to guide the city through explosive growth without facing the problems other cities have had. I wanted to maintain Mansfield’s charm and sense of close-knit community while also building new amenities to create an ever-improving quality of life. I wanted to have great neighborhoods, a strong local economy, additional retail and commercial development and to build that excellent quality of life people here have come to expect. With lots of help from an amazing group of citizens and fellow Council Members, we have accomplished that goal. In my term as Mayor, Mansfield was named four times to Money Magazine’s list of Best Places to Live in America. Our parks system was named the best in Texas. We have been recognized here in Texas and nationally for everything from our water service, to our volunteer efforts, to being the second-safest city in Texas. Our historic downtown has been revitalized and transformed into a wonderful destination for residents and out-of-towners alike. Visitors come here from all over the country to visit our outstanding sports, recreational and entertainment venues. The attractiveness of Mansfield has helped us continue to draw citizens and businesses to our wonderful city. The reason we have accomplished so much is because of our greatest natural resource: our citizens who run businesses, volunteer across our community and commit to giving our children a safe and successful future.
I saw what volunteers can really do when I worked with Mansfield Cares, when I helped establish Mansfield Churches FOR the City and in volunteering with groups like the Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mansfield Historical Society and the Mansfield Independent School District (ISD) Strategic Planning Committee. I also saw people reach out to help bring up our next generation as our kids grew up here by volunteering with Mansfield Youth Basketball and the Mansfield Soccer Association. We were also able to establish an annual celebration here for National Day of Prayer and our very own Veteran’s Day Parade and Salute to honor our veterans. This city is not led “top-down;” we are led from the grassroots up. Our people make our city better by volunteering, by building incredible successful businesses, by helping their local schools and churches and by often giving elected officials like me the ideas, the information and the insights we need to make better decisions. Our community works the way a community is supposed to work, and that has made us flourish. In my time as Mayor I have seen many changes in the city and in my own life. Our four children have grown into responsible and mature adults, and two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law and our first granddaughter have joined our family. And now I have a very large, new challenge. I humbly request the prayers of everyone who reads this to help me make this effort at the state level be as successful as what has happened here locally in Mansfield, Texas. And I look forward to your thoughts and ideas to make Texas even better. I am grateful you allowed me to serve as your Mayor for nearly 12 years and I hope to continue working for you in the next exciting decade.

Though Dr. Dolittle might seem a bit of an unusual selection for the $175 million live action and computer graphics treatment, Universal Pictures has seen fit to furnish such a film for us, ostensibly more faithful to the original 1922 novel by Hugh Lofting than previous efforts such as the 1998 series starring Eddie Murphy. A star-studded cast featuring the likes of Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, and John Cena provides voiceover work as the animals Dolittle learns to speak with.

BIKES FOR MISSION ARLINGTON M
OST OF US HAVE CHERISHED MEMORIES
of zipping around our neighborhood on our bikes. Legs pumping furiously, wind whistling in our ears, we felt like we could take on the world. For the past several years, Bikes for Mission Arlington has made that childhood experience possible for thousands of local kids. Mission Arlington Executive Director Tillie Burgin was on hand, again this year, to celebrate the generosity of corporations, churches, individuals, and families who donated bikes and toys for kids in our area. “Mission Arlington exists to help people at their point of need,” she said. “We’re grateful God allowed us to have another year to give away bikes.” Each year, the community comes out in force to help those families who don’t have a way to buy a toy or bike for their children, at Christmastime. And everyone who receives a gift also hears the gospel message. “Last year, 1,000 accepted Jesus as their Savior,” Ms. Tillie said. Excitement mounted, the second week of December, as bikes and helmets were loaded up and paraded through town, with a police escort. “For many kids, that bike is the only thing they ask for,” Ms. Tillie said. “The blessing of a family receiving a bike is unexplainable.”

NOWN WORLDWIDE FOR THEIR DELUXE FRUITCAKE, which makes
up 98 percent of their total sales and is shipped to more than 195 countries, Texas’ famous Collin Street Bakery, headquartered in Corsicana, is set to be the subject of a feature film starring renowned funnyman Ferrell (Step Brothers, Anchorman) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), according to a press release issued by the bakery. The film is to be centered around the story of accountant Sandy Jenkins (Ferrell) and his wife Kay (Dern), who embezzled over $17 million from the bakery for nearly a decade to fund a lavish lifestyle that attracted much attention from suspicious neighbors. Much of the story was told in a widely shared piece written by Katy Vine and published in the January 2016 edition of Texas Monthly. The film is to be directed by Max Winkler (son of Henry Winkler) and written by Trey Selman, with shooting set to begin early this year.

FROM UTA STUDENT-ATHLETE TO GLOBAL LEADER
T
he arena is packed. Your family is gathered around you. The crowd is stoked. And the Mavericks are pulling off a win. Not a bad return on your $20 investment. But there’s more going on here tonight—in the lives of the players and our community—than most fans realize. UTA athletics is about winning championships, sure. But it’s about so much more.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT On any given day UTA student-athletes can be found reading to and mentoring students at local elementary schools, gathering food for local food pantries (a total of 5,000 cans in their last food drive), collecting shoes to ship to impoverished countries, or volunteering at Mission Arlington. “Our student-athletes won awards the last three years, within the Sun Belt Conference, for their outstanding service to the community,” said UTA Director of Athletics Jim Baker. “That shows the commitment they have. And it’s not us pushing them. They do it all themselves.” “Many of our student-athletes participate in mission trips in this country and abroad,” said Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics Debbie Garcia. “They participate in leadership retreats to learn how to impact their community and the world.”
BY M E R E D I T H K N I G H T P H OTO S BY L A N D O N D AY
OPPORTUNITY “What many people don’t consider is that many of our student-athletes wouldn’t go to college, if not for their sport,” Mr. Baker said. “Many of them are the first in their family to attend college and we have an 80% to 85% percent graduation rate among our student-athletes—much higher than the national average.”
EDUCATION That exemplary graduation rate is something UTA leadership works on, from the first time the student athlete steps on campus. “Our involvement in their education begins with advising them about a major within their interests and passions,” Ms. Garcia said. “Then we work from the point of admission through graduation to make sure they’re on the right path. We offer study groups and tutoring and act as liaisons between them and their teachers. We keep them apprised of what’s happening within their major. And through it all, we emphasize making connections and building relationships that will benefit them throughout their lives.”
WELFARE The workload of the average college athlete is staggering. “Our student-athletes are carr ying a minimum of 15 hours plus
training, practice, and games,” Mr. Baker said. “Many of them are also finding time to volunteer around the community. Their days are jampacked. So, we host events where they can meet deans from their majors. They’re provided some insight other students aren’t and the deans walk away with an understanding of the type of day our student-athletes endure.”
SUPPORT UTA athletic managers and academic advisors are often former student-athletes who’ve been there, done that. “We know what they’re going through,” Ms. Garcia said. “We help them coordinate their schedules and get them in to see renown nutritionists, sports medicine specialists, and trainers— some of the same experts working with the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Stars— and provide the tutoring and study groups they need.”

have student-athletes from no less than ten countries and our goal is to help each become the global citizen and leader they want to be.”
WINNING Deputy Director of UTA Athletics Russell Warren is quick to point out this is still a business and student-athletes come here to play their sport—and win. “Our goals are many—to educate our student-athletes for life, to grow and educate our staff, to make a positive impact on the Arlington community, to engage with corporate partners, fans, alumni, and students, and to make a difference in the lives of Arlington/ Mansfield residents,” he said. “But our student-athletes came here because they’re elite athletes and competitors, they want to win championships and we want to create an environment where they can do that. Our facilities are some of the best in our conference and we have tremendous coaches. UTA has a long history in this community and the fans share in our successes, which have been many. However, in the end, we measure those successes— not by wins and losses or ticket sales—but by whether our students are learning to succeed globally and share the gifts they’ve been given. That’s a win for everyone.”

e a l l h ave he a r d t he phrase that “practice makes perfect” but I don’t necessarily agree with that statement. I loved playing basketball as a teenager and practiced every single day. I didn’t have great coaching but enough to develop a jump shot that in my opinion was a thing of beauty. However, without the coaching I never developed the rest of my game at the same level I developed my shooting form. I knew how to shoot a basketball, but dribbling, passing, movement, and lock-down defense were things I knew very little about. I practiced but I didn’t know what I was doing or what drills to do to get better. Because it was misguided practice, I never really got better. The right knowledge, coaching, and direction can lead to making something much better. Doing something the wrong way over and over just leads to frustration.
Another area where you could start this
So this year as we all attempt to make things better in our lives, let me share with you a few areas of change that have proven to be solid and are considered good coaching. These are areas where practice may not lead us to perfection, but they can lead to health and wholeness as we try and figure out how to start being the kind of people we want to be.
the father looking out and running to meet
If you are going to start one thing this year, this is it. Start with you. The one element I’ve noticed as the common denominator in all my strained relationships at home, work, and school was me. If I wanted to have better relationships with others, I only had power over one person in all of those scenarios and it was me and my inner world. This year, start looking at yourself and asking the question, “What do I need to change?” Instead of always asking what other people need to do differently, give that up and only focus on you. This is good practice. As you start to work on you, you will see change in others around you. It’s unbelievable how this works. Here are some practice habits that you should start this year: see a counselor or therapist (I have discovered that this is what healthy people do), take a class, get in a book club, and get in some type of group that will help you get outside of yourself.
year is by finding a place to be totally honest about what is going on in your inner world. I firmly believe that healthy people are fully known somewhere and unhealthy people like to keep things in the shadows. The more vulnerable I can be with trusted friends or a counselor the more weight that is lifted off of my shoulders. I believe when our hurts, pains, and sin patterns remained tucked away in our inner world, they have too much power and can cause great damage. When we allow our inner world out these monsters that have haunted us in the past become less scary. Start with a counselor or a safe friend but take the first step and start finding some freedom. Lastly, I am so glad that I chose to put my life and hope in God. One of my favorite stories in the Bible is that of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32). I love the imagery of his lost son. Often times I imagine this as a one-time deal—the father running to his son. However, the more time I spend in Scripture I realize that for every one of us, the father will run to us again and again. He never stops running to his children. If you feel like you have left the Father, the church has hurt you, or you have damaged your relationship with God beyond repair, please start by saying a prayer or just simply turning your eyes toward Him as a sign of need. He has been running toward you for all of your life. Start. What a horrible and beautiful word this time of year. I pray that you and I can start being healthy in our souls, in our minds, and in our hearts this new year. Start these great practice habits that were mentioned and start seeing growth and maturity come your way in 2020. re you over 50 and haven’t worked out much to speak of? Are you 20-something and uber fit? Or like most of us, are you somewhere in between? Have you tried working out with no guidance, no inspiration, no commaraderie, and no real results? If any of that sounds like you, you’ll want to hear about this revolutionary, science-based fitness model. It’s called Orangetheory Fitness and it’s sweeping the nation, changing the way men and women—of all ages and all fitness levels—are staying fit, improving their health, making friends, and learning to love their workout. Orangetheory is a science-backed, technology-tracked, coach-inspired group workout designed to produce results from the inside out.
GET IN THE ZONE If you’ve ever felt intimidated in a class or gym trying to keep up with the fittest members there, you know it can be discouraging. At Orangetheory Fitness members do variations of the same workout wearing heart-rate monitors to capture how hard their own body is working. As you work, your heart rate number is measured against a range based on your age to create your “splat points.” Splat points are achieved when your personalized heart rate zone is above 84 percent of your max heart rate. This is dependent on individuals and will be dependent on your personal body.
MODIFY YOUR EXPERIENCE Each Orangetheory workout is a little different, so you never get bored. But each one is a full-body workout generally consisting of 30 minutes on a treadmill either power walking, jogging, or running and 30 minutes either on a water-rowing machine or in the gym doing a series of moves such as squats, crunches, or assisted pull-ups, which can be modified as you need them. While each day’s workout is different from the day before, members across the globe are doing the same workout together as designed and tested by Orangetheory Fitness certified trainers. Continually changing the workout helps you continue to challenge and change your body, while never hitting plateaus.
COACH-GUIDED While the workout only lasts for 60 minutes, the benefits last long after your workout is over. And there’s never any guesswork because professional coaches are there throughout your hour, helping you reach your goals. It’s like having a personal trainer without paying the price for one. Go at your own pace choosing between walking, jogging, or running as
you feel comfortable. If you’re recovering from an injury or orthopedic issue and need special guidance, simply tell your coach and they’ll help you find options that work for you. OTbeat technology helps you measure your heart rate and performance data throughout your hour, as evidence of a job well done.
COMMUNITY Orangetheory Fitness places an emphasis on building community. Go in for a workout and come out with a new group of friends. After all, when you’re enjoying the people you work out with, you’re much more likely to return. And there’s nothing like a call or text saying, “Hey, we missed you in class last night” to get you up and at ‘em today. Orangetheory holds member events and socials and special fitness challenges, so you’ll reach milestones and cross finish lines with cheers from your peers and thrive with a group of people with a common goal—to become better versions of ourselves.
“ME” TIME Working out isn’t always about losing weight but about doing something nice for yourself. For some busy members, their 60-minute Orangetheory workout is the only “me time” they get all day. The tag line “More Life” isn’t just hype and it means something different to each individual. It’s about gaining better health. It allows you to play with your kids or grandkids, prepare for your first 5K, get off your blood pressure medicine, or reach any other goal you’ve set for yourself.
ALL AGES Members range in age from 14 (with a parent’s signature) to the high 80s and they can use their membership at any of the over 1,200 Orangetheory Fitness locations nationwide. But there’s nothing like your own studio where faces light up when you walk in the room and coaches who know you by name and are onboard with your personal goals. If you’re ready to meet your new “Fit Fam,” visit OrangeTheoryFitness.com for a list of class times at the 31 locations right here in the DFW area (with an additional three under construction right now).
T H E TA G L I N E “MORE LIFE” ISN’T JUST HYPE AND IT MEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO EACH INDIVIDUAL. IT’S ABOUT GAINING B E T T E R H E A LT H . IT ALLOWS YOU T O P L AY W I T H YOUR KIDS OR GRANDKIDS, P R E PA R E FO R YOUR FIRST 5K, GET OFF YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICINE, OR REACH ANY OTHER GOAL YOU’VE SET FOR Y O U R S E L F.

A LASIK SURGEON
BY J E N N I F E R S I M O N S O N
SOME LUCKY FOLKS WAKE UP EACH MORNING and simply open their eyes
to begin their day, thinking nothing of the fact that the world shows up in perfect clarity. But for the rest of us, the need to fumble with glasses first thing in the morning just to turn off the alarm or squint through the fog is just part of reality. Glasses and contacts can help compensate for the imperfections in our eyes, but they are only temporary solutions. For those wanting to make a long-lasting change, LASIK surgery is the best option. This proven laser eye surgery reshapes the cornea to help improve vision without the need for corrective lenses.
Once you have decided it’s time to go ahead with a LASIK procedure to correct your vision, the next step is to find the most qualified LASIK surgeon. To do this, first ask for referrals. Your eye care practitioner and any friends or family members who have undergone the procedure are great places to start. If you know of a surgeon in another state with a seller reputation, contact their office to ask if they could recommend a doctor in your area. After compiling a list of referrals, do your homework on each doctor. Research online reviews. Check credentials like board certifications and memberships with The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), which also have qualified eye surgeon directories on their websites. After narrowing down your search, make an appointment for a LASIK consultation. Think of

the consultation like a job interview. It is best to have questions prepared beforehand. How long has the surgeon performed LASIK? How many procedures has the surgeon completed? It is not uncommon for a LASIK surgeon to have 25,000 or more procedures under their belt. What is their experience with new LASIK technologies? Ask about their screening process. LASIK is not recommended for patients with health issues, thin corneas, young patients, and pregnant women. You want to make sure your surgeon follows industry standards for selecting patients and doesn’t perform the procedure on people who aren’t good candidates. You should also ask about the possibility of re-treatment. Some patients do not respond well to the procedure and need follow-up treatments. What is the follow-up policy if complications do occur? Will you have to pay for additional treatments? What does post-procedure care and maintenance look like? It is also important to find out if the surgical center has had any outbreaks of eye infections. They can be very serious. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria is on the rise, so it is essential that the center follows impeccable standards of sterilizing instruments and equipment. Ask for recommendations of past patients who can talk to you about their experience. Surgery of any kind can be intimidating. Taking the time to find the best LASIK surgeon for your procedure will put your mind at ease and increase the likelihood that you too will be one of the lucky ones that open their eyes first thing in the morning to see a sharp new day.

AN AUDIOLOGIST
BY A N N E T T E B R O O KS
APPROXIMATELY 20 PERCENT OF ADULTS IN THE U.S. report some degree of
hearing loss, according to the Hearing Loss Association of America. If you’re one of them, it can profoundly affect your ability to communicate and relate to others. Left untreated, it may lead to a host of problems, including feelings of isolation, negativism, stress, depression, and memory loss. It’s important to have your hearing checked regularly, even if you think your hearing is fine. And if you suspect a loved one suffers from hearing loss, urge him or her to see an audiologist for evaluation.
In addition to routine diagnostic and hearing evaluations, today’s full-service audiologists provide comprehensive hearing healthcare. This typically includes hearing aid fittings, programming, and repairs, and services such as live speech mapping, tinnitus treatment options, cerumen removal, and more. Since you will likely see your audiologist on a regular basis, look for one with an office that is conveniently located from where you live or work. Location is important, but finding an audiologist who meets your individual needs and is up-to-date on the latest innovations can be worth a drive. Amazing technological advancements have been made over the last few years in the field of audiology. With this in mind, it is paramount that you find an audiologist who is up-to-date on the latest advances in diagnostics and treatment options, including cutting-edge digital programmable hearing

aids. These new generation devices are not only powerful, but so tiny they are barely perceptible. And they come with enhanced features such as the ability to pair them with your cell phone. The more hearing aid options an audiologist offers increases their ability to customize the technology to your needs and lifestyle. When researching audiologists, remember their credentials can help you know you will be seen by a professional with extensive training who has demonstrated a commitment to maintaining the highest levels of professional competency. Someone who is board certified by the American Board of Audiology (ABA) has completed graduate study in audiology from a regionally accredited university, has earned a doctoral degree in audiology (AuD), has completed a minimum of 2,000 hours of mentored professional practice, and must engage in 60 hours of continuous learning to recertify every three years. Other credentials may include CCC-A, which signifies the audiologist holds a certificate of clinical competency in audiology, issued by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Professionals awarded the CCC-A have completed a rigorous academic program and a supervised clinical experience and have passed a national examination. F-AAA delineates audiologists who are Fellows of the American Academy of Audiology. Lastly, finding an audiologist with whom you feel comfortable and who educates you is an advantage. Success with hearing instruments depends on the relationship you have with your audiologist as much as it does the actual hearing device itself. Better hearing and easier communication are a journey. You want an audiologist who will work with you in partnership every step of the way.

A SUMMER CAMP
BY M I M I G R E E N W O O D K N I G H T
SUMMER CAMP IS ABOUT GIVING YOUR CHILD AN OPPORTUNITY to make true
friends, connect with nature, grow more independent, get out of their comfort zone, and develop lifelong skills (in art, sports, cooking, technology, and other fields). It’s about letting (making?) them unplug from technology, enjoy unstructured playtime, and who they are away from their family and familiar circle of friends. Camp means being physically active all day and bone tired at night. It means feeling homesick when they get to camp and “campsick” when they leave. But how do you decide which of the many camp adventures is right for your child?
The first step is to consider their interests. The kid who adores computer camp might not care for football camp. The one who loves gymnastics camp might not enjoy science camp. Consider a camp that offers what they’re into. But also keep in mind the need for exposure to activities they’ve never done before. Has your child always wanted to try horseback riding, pottery, drama, or martial arts? Summer camp is a great place to test the waters outside of their sphere of interest. And there are also traditional camps with activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, archery, and arts and crafts. Talk to your child and see what they think sounds exciting. Ask other parents what camps they’ve tried and what they liked or didn’t like about them. Read some online reviews. If you think your child will feel more comfortable going to camp with kids they already know,

find out where their buds are going. If you’re considering day camp, that’ll make it easier to carpool. But kids who are seven or older may be ready for overnight camp and the adventure of a lifetime. Consider coordinating overnight camp with an out-of-town cousin or a friend who’s moved away. They’ll enjoy a new adventure and new activities in a whole new environment but also share their adventure with someone they don’t get to see during the school year. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, it’s time to vet the camps on your list. Do a little research and find out about each camp’s accreditation, camper-to-counselor ratio, and stated mission. Once you know the basics, pick up the phone and talk to someone involved in the camp. The camp staff should go out of their way to set your mind at ease but also help you make sure their camp is right for your child. If a camp seems perfect for your child but it’s out of your budget, inquire about possible scholarship options. If you experienced life at camp as a child, you probably already know the profound positive effects it can have—effects that last a lifetime— and you likely want a similar experience for your own kids. If you didn’t go to camp as a child, talk to your friends who did, then start doing your homework to find out how you can offer this special experience to your child.

PET OWNERS KNOW THE IMPORTANCE of finding a top notch veterinarian to
care for their precious pets. Considering that your pets are part of your family, it makes sense to carefully select a kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable veterinarian who will provide the best possible care. From preventative check-ups and routine care to treatment for injury or illness, the right veterinarian can make all the difference in your pet’s overall health. Whether you’re a new pet owner or you’re interested in switching veterinarians, it’s important to use the same care and criteria when selecting a veterinarian as you would when choosing your family’s doctor or dentist.
First, consider what’s most important to you. Aside from a veterinarian’s friendliness and warmth, think about office location, office hours, payment options, and the types of medical services offered. Is it easy to make an appointment and get to the clinic? How are “In veterinary medicine, not only are we caring for the pet, we are caring for the family. you own a purebred dog or cat, local breed clubs or rescues can also offer insight. Many of these clubs and organizations have established relationships with veterinarians who are familiar with a breed’s potential health issues or reoccurring problems. When you find a veterinarian you’d like to get to know, schedule an initial visit and ensure you and your pet feel comfortable. Take this time to learn more about the veterinarian’s background and specialties and see if your communication styles and philosophies align. Keep in mind that you and your pet will also interact with other people at the practice. When you tour a potential clinic, observe what you see. Is the team calm, friendly, and courteous? Or is the atmosphere frantic and stressful? It’s important that you feel comfortable with the entire team as each individual plays a role in your pet’s experience. You should be able to easily communicate with each staff member and express your pet’s needs. Do you feel like the staff works to build a rapport with you and your pet? If you don’t get a good vibe, it might not be the best practice for you. Veterinarians don’t just care for pets—they also care for pet owners. The right veterinarian will create an inviting atmosphere where pet owners can ask questions and feel at ease. Make an informed choice when it comes to your veterinarian, and you will enjoy a rewarding and beneficial partnership that puts your pet’s health and happiness at the forefront.

MOST OF US HAVE SOMETHING ABOUT OUR PHYSICAL APPEARANCE we’d change

Whether you desire complete body transformation with a mommy makeover or dream of facial rejuvenation, cosmetic surgery can be a positive, life-changing experience that boosts self-confidence and may even advance your career. Choosing the right cosmetic surgeon is the key, so educate yourself on all available treatment options, and then select a cosmetic surgeon that’s right for you. You’ll be glad you did.

In addition, when interviewing potential cosmetic surgeons ask them: How did you train for this procedure? Did you have successful and reproducible results? How many surgeries have you performed? Furthermore, make sure you receive straightforward answers to your questions, as you should feel at ease and comfortable. Remember, you are going to be spending quite a bit of time with your cosmetic surgeon, so make sure you have a positive and encouraging connection. Now, look carefully at the before and after photos of previous patients. Be sure the photos represent actual clients versus stock photos used for marketing purposes. Additionally, pay close attention to patients who have similar qualities as you. Look for someone with a similar figure or facial structure, age, and body frame. Next, ask your cosmetic surgeon where they perform surgery and whether it is an “accredited” facility. This could be at a hospital, an outpatient surgery center, or a private office. For a facility to receive accreditation, it must adhere to strict standards in personnel, sanitation, emergency equipment, patient care, anesthesia, and inspections. Therefore, look for symbols of national accreditation including, AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO, as a competent cosmetic surgeon will proudly discuss their accreditation as a symbol of excellence and patient safety. Lastly, you want to be sure you are being well treated by the office staff. Was the staff friendly and helpful during your visit? Did you receive supportive materials and office pamphlets during your consultation? Were the fees clearly stated on the quote in a non-confusing manner? Remember, you will be living with the results of your surgery for years. So, take time finding the cosmetic surgeon and staff that’s right for you.

vascular conditions such as varicose veins, aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). Of course, any time you choose a doctor to trust, the decision is important. But when dealing with the health of your veins, finding a vascular specialist who’s knowledgeable, confident, skilled, and capable is vital to your future health. While you can see your primary care doctor for vein-related issues, a vascular and vein specialist is someone who’s dedicated their life to specifically treating venous health concerns and will know much more about venous insufficiency than a general practitioner.
Once you decide you want to take your condition to a vein specialist, you might go a step further and search for a specialized vascular surgeon, who is a specialist with the knowledge to diagnose your specific problem and the understanding of the optimum treatment available to correct it. While there are now many viable, non-invasive treatment options, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. The doctor you choose should be committed to taking adequate time and conducting extensive testing to develop the best treatment plan for your unique venous insufficiency. Begin by asking your primary care physician for referrals. You can also ask family and friends about experiences they’ve had with local vein specialists. Look for a specialist who’s committed to exploring all non-invasive options before discussing surgery. Except in rare cases, vein stripping has become a thing of the past. Newer treatments are minimally invasive with little pain, reduced stress, and minimal recovery time. Some of the non-invasive treatments a specialist might recommend are endovenous laser treatment, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, spider vein sclerotherapy, and veinlite sclerotherapy. Unlike older methods of treatment, these procedures involve minimal discomfort and don’t require long hospital stays. They address venous problems without leaving scarring, so patients aren’t trading in one visible condition for another. And patients are usually back on their feet and enjoying life the same day. Seeing a specialist about your venous health concerns should be a productive, comfortable process that ends in the best results possible for you. Take the proper time now to find a specialist who’ll deliver the venous treatment you need and deserve.

the day spa to destress and rejuvenate. Today, we have medical spas (med spas) that blend traditional relaxation services with medical technology to rejuvenate skin, hair, nails, and other areas while easing mind, body, and spirit. Typically operated under the supervision of a medical doctor, med spas offer a range of services such as acupuncture, hair and tattoo removal, facials, injections, fillers, chemical peels, weight loss, skin tightening, and skin rejuvenation. But it’s important to thoroughly vet potential medical spas to ensure they’re safe and able to deliver the results you want.
Begin by considering your goals. Then do some research to see who in your area offers the specific treatments you want and need. Gather names of potential spas from friends, the Internet, and local advertising. Once you have some candidates, read a few online reviews while looking for an overall pattern of satisfaction from their clients, especially those who’ve had the same procedures you’re considering. Book an initial consultation at a few locations to get a firsthand impression. Inquire about who’ll be performing your procedure and how much experience they have with that treatment. How long have they been doing it and how many do they perform each month? What are their credentials? You want your procedure performed by someone with the proper training, licensing, background, and

Do staff members seem knowledgeable? Professional? You want to feel comfortable with the entire practice, not just the person performing your procedure. The spa should outline the procedure for you and let you know what you can expect. They should ask about your goals for the treatment. While there, assess the cleanliness of the facility. Ask about any technology used for your procedure. Look for a med spa that keeps up with advancing technology and one that’s passionate about continuing education. Take notes on the technology they use, especially any that will be implemented in your procedure, then do some research to see if this is the most up-todate and least-invasive technology available. Ask how many treatments it should take to see the results you want, keeping in mind that individuals differ. Some clients may see results after one treatment while others need several to achieve the results they desire. But they should be able to give you an average. You should not feel pressured into purchasing additional services. If you’re feeling pressured to sign up for treatments you don’t think you need, be skeptical. To recap, begin by identifying your problem or concern and considering the results you hope to achieve. Investigate which med spas in your area offer those services. Then use the above criteria to determine who stacks up and where you feel most comfortable and welcome. Once you find the med spa that’s perfect for you, you’re on the road to a better, less stressful life.

MANY OF THE DECISIONS YOU MAKE AS A PARENT impact your children’s
overall success in life. The schools they attend are very important considerations. Because of this, a growing number of parents are considering private schools. Studies indicate that better discipline, a better learning environment, smaller class sizes, and improved student safety are some of the top reasons parents send their children to private schools, as well as higher standardized test scores. Other factors include special needs, religious curriculums, programs that further develop a child’s natural talents, and environments that support the development of emotional and interpersonal social skills.
Start by considering your child’s needs along with your own desires as you begin your quest to find the right private school. Make two lists of questions—ones to ask yourself and ones for the schools you tour. Ask yourself what type “Education doesn’t happen in a classroom, under the instruction of a stranger, 5 days a week. Education begins in the home, it’s shaped by our environments, and it’s supported by a community of teachers. Education happens everywhere; our farms, our shops, our pulpits. Teachers are everywhere; grandparents, neighbors, pastors, and friends.”
of student your child is and answer honestly. Then think about the general characteristics of a school that you believe he or she will be most successful in. Ask what some of the challenges are that your child struggles with—socially, academically, or from a learning ability perspective. How will your child benefit from small class sizes? How important are athletics or a robust fine arts program for your child? What kind of school-sponsored

If you have more than one child who will be attending a private school and want to keep them in the same school, then you need to consider the traits, skills, and abilities of all of your children. Since they may vary, be prepared to look for a school that can generally benefit all of them. Once you’ve done this, start doing some research and create a list of best prospects. As you search, prepare a list of questions for each school you will be touring. For example, what is the school’s philosophy and vision and how do they apply it in the classroom and on the campus? What is the current student to teacher ratio in each specific grade level and what are the school’s accreditations? Ask about the teachers’ qualifications, the school’s co-curricular activities, and how technology is integrated into the classroom and curriculum. Inquire about college matriculation, available AP classes, and even travel-abroad and community service programs. Ask what type of student the school is looking for in general, because you want your child to thrive and feel comfortable as opposed to leaving them feeling out of place or unwanted. When visiting schools, take your time and observe the students, teachers, and parents. If it helps, take notes. Do the students and teachers appear engaged? Do students seem attentive? Can you envision your child being successful at this school? Lastly, get your child’s input on the schools they’ve visited. Listen with an open mind. If your child is staunchly opposed to a particular school, get to the bottom of these feelings before making a final decision.

ARE YOU READY TO IMPROVE WHAT MOTHER NATURE GAVE YOU? Do you want to
restore your body after having children or losing weight, rock a slimmer, smoother figure, or turn back the years on your facial appearance? If so, now comes the next step—selecting a plastic surgeon. With so many to choose from it is natural to feel a bit overwhelmed, but fortunately it’s easier than you think. Resist the urge to buy into hype and follow a few simple steps that can help you choose a plastic surgeon that’s right for you.
First, remember that there is no substitute for credentials, reputation, and experience when choosing a plastic surgeon. Any licensed physician can say they perform appearance-improving surgery, but there’s one easy way to determine if they are qualified to call themselves a plastic surgeon. Physicians who specialize in plastic surgery have completed a general surgery residency followed by a plastic surgery residency, or an integrated residency that includes both. Some plastic surgeons opt to then complete a fellowship in a subspecialty, such as aesthetic surgery. If you’re uncertain about a surgeon’s credentials and training, ask, then validate. A surgeon who hesitates to answer should throw up the red flag. Board certification is another way to determine if a plastic surgeon has the training and focus you are seeking. Look for surgeons

It’s important to note that physicians such as maxillofacial surgeons and otolaryngologists (ENTs) may perform facial cosmetic surgery. Many of these medical specialists have completed a post-residency fellowship focused on plastic, reconstructive, or cosmetic surgery. For example, an ENT can complete a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Just as you would ask a plastic surgeon about credentials and board certification, ask these physicians as well then verify. Next, schedule consultations with at least three plastic surgeons so you can compare. Develop a list of questions and bring them to your consultation. You should feel your surgeon has genuinely listened to your goals and concerns and has answered your questions to your satisfaction without making you feel rushed or pressured into making a decision. Note whether or not options and recommendations are provided and compared based on your unique needs, budget, and time available for recovery. Before you leave, ask to see before and after pictures of actual patients. Also notice the staff and how they treat you. Before and after surgery, you will interact often with them. Lastly, ask for patient references and contact them. These will be people who have agreed to be used as references in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. They can provide insight and opinions that are honest and real, compared to online reviews with unverifiable ratings. If you still can’t determine which plastic surgeon to choose, keep looking. Go on more consultations. A decision as important as this shouldn’t be rushed.

unless the feet inside are suffering—then the boots either stay in the closet or move slowly in short strides. Painful, uncomfortable, irritated feet are problematic and require immediate attention. In some cases, minor foot pain can be addressed by a primary care physician. Other times, a foot specialist, known as a podiatrist, is required. While selecting a podiatrist may initially seem straightforward, many specialties and sub-specialties exist. In most cases, your primary care physician will assess your need and steer you in the right direction, but it doesn’t hurt to be well informed during the process.
According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, “Feet are complex anatomical structures, all-in-one stabilizers, shock absorbers, and propulsion engines that are instrumental to overall health and well-being.” Since feet require the care of specialists “Don’t try to live with foot and ankle pain. Foot and ankle problems can stem from a variety of root causes such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and vein disease. Make sure to understand what’s actually happening with your feet and ankles, and find a specialist who understands the cause and doesn’t just treat the symptom. Other issues include arthritis, injuries, skin disorders, nerve damage, muscle and tendon issues, toe or toe nail problems, and joint conditions. Ask questions and do your best to get a full picture of your particular affliction. Don’t hesitate to do your own research. Once you’ve narrowed down your options for a podiatrist that fits your needs, look at online reviews and check the American Podiatric Medical Association website (APMA.org) for more information. Your feet need to last a lifetime, so preventative care is important as well. Choose properly fitting shoes and avoid those that don’t offer stability and comfort. If pedicures are among your must-haves, select a place that is known for its cleanliness, one that uses disposable liners in the foot wash. If you have children, be aware their feet can grow a half size in just a few short months, so frequently check their shoe fit. Don’t wear closed toe, tight-fitting shoes without socks and make sure to keep shoes clean and properly aired. Your feet are your foundation, and while it may be easy to overlook them, make it a priority to include routine care and maintenance before they demand it! And if you find yourself in need of a podiatrist, many great resources are available to help in your selection. Use the tips above to get started and you’ll be on your way to successful treatment.

A COSMETIC DENTIST

IF MOTHER NATURE DIDN’T BLESS YOU WILL A GREAT SMILE, today’s cosmetic
dentistry can give you that “Hollywood smile” you’ve always wanted. Cosmetic dentists can reshape worn teeth, straighten crooked smiles, and replace teeth that are missing, which can have an enormous impact. Beyond improving your appearance, cosmetic dentistry can benefit you in numerous other ways. Being able to smile without embarrassment helps build your self-confidence, putting you more at ease at work and in social situations. It can even enhance your career! But first you’ve got to find the right dentist for the job.
Ask for referrals. If you have a relative or friend who’s had cosmetic dental work, ask how satisfied they are with the result. If you already go to or know a dentist who doesn’t perform cosmetic procedures, ask them for recommendations. They might also recommend other specialists depending on your situation before you undergo the cosmetic treatment. Look at online reviews and local publications. Patient reviews and testimonials can tell you a lot about dental procedure success and the overall office atmosphere. A simple search can yield a wealth of information from past patients on the cosmetic dentist you’re considering. Look at before and after photos and verify that the practice has the technology required to perform procedures you might be interested in.

One excellent way to validate the credentials of a cosmetic dentist is to find out if they’re a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Members of the AACD receive extensive training beyond dental school on the latest advances and techniques in cosmetic dentistry. They’re also required to pass rigorous written and oral exams and take regular continuing education classes to keep abreast of the latest developments in cosmetic dentistry. You can also check the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, which has licensee information available online. Consider their location. This might seem trivial, but cosmetic procedures can sometimes require multiple office visits, and you probably want a dentist who is reasonably close to your home or work. You may also consider in-office comforts such as various types of sedation, headphones, or less intrusive x-ray technology and 3D scanning. Ask about payment options. Talk to your insurance company to see what sorts of services it covers, and confirm with the practice that they will accept the type of payment you’d prefer—or if they offer payment options that will make the cost of service reasonable for your budget. Schedule an initial consultation. Done correctly, cosmetic dentistry is safe, effective and long lasting. But done incorrectly, it can lead to long-term problems. During the consultation, explain what outcome you desire and listen carefully to the treatment options they propose and the outcome they expect. And don’t hesitate to ask questions about any lingering doubts you may have. Finally, as you’re considering your options, remember that a strong, beautiful smile can build your self-confidence and open doors of opportunity you never knew existed—while it can sometimes come with an investment of time and money, the dividends are hard to place a price on.

If your spine becomes damaged, it can be excruciatingly painful and restrict your movement, preventing you from being able to participate in your favorite activities and severely impacting your quality of life. Beyond pain relief and mobility, benefits of spine surgery include reduction in prescription drugs, ability to return to work, improved productivity, better fitness, stronger movement, and heightened mood.

A strong outcome from a spinal operation relies on selecting the right doctor. You can follow a few simple steps to find a surgeon you can trust with your back. Clarify if the doctor is an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. Either of these two types of surgeons have the expertise to perform most spinal operations (although the former typically addresses tumors, while the latter usually treat deformity). Verify how much of the practice is spine operations. Doctors who center their work on the spine will tend to use more innovative methods and have greater expertise. One way to check how much surgery a doctor is performing is to see if they belong to the North American Spine Society, since anyone who joins that association must confirm that half or more of their practice is committed to the spine. Another important number
Confirm the credibility and education of the surgeon by checking that they are board-certified. You can check certification with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) by calling (866) ASK-ABMS. Make sure that the surgeon has certification in neurological or orthopedic surgery, or is at least board eligible in those fields. It is also a good idea to verify how much training the surgeon has received. When you meet with the surgeon, think about whether they make you feel comfortable and are helpful in addressing your concerns. The doctor should be clear in their responses. Select a doctor who is focused on informing you and helping you determine if the operation is the right choice. The surgeon should explain the challenges involved, along with a balanced view of benefits and risks. Speak with other patients. Ask if they thought the surgeon was highly skilled and if they would seek additional treatment from them. Verify that the doctor didn’t rush through explanations and treatment, and that it was not difficult to reach them, particularly following the operation. Check that the surgeon’s staff was friendly and helpful. Speak with other doctors too. It can be helpful to ask other physicians for their perspective. Be aware that doctors will often not want to speak poorly of their peers, in part because negative comments can lead to slander lawsuits. However, a strongly positive assessment is a good sign. Spinal surgery can improve your mobility, alleviate pain, and allow you to return to work. While picking out the right doctor is fundamental, you can meet with a happy outcome by putting sufficient care into the selection process.

Before meeting with your surgeon, it’s helpful if you ask your cardiologist, oncologist, or pulmonologist what questions you should ask the surgeon based on the specifics of your case. What can you do to best prepare for surgery? How long will you be in the hospital following your surgery? What should you expect as far as recovery time, and what limitations should you be prepared for in your recovery? Once your meet with your surgeon, they should complete a thorough exam and help you to feel comfortable about the upcoming procedure. It’s also important that your surgeon answers your questions fully and understands your concerns leading up to your surgery. The right surgeon will not only provide clear solutions for your medical problem, but will explain those solutions with details you need and will make sure you are comfortable with your choices regarding surgery. Understanding your procedure and what you need to know before going under the knife can help properly set your expectations for recovery and can help you heal faster. A surgeon who best explains your options, outcomes, and recovery period can be the best fit for you. When your surgeon has the expertise, experience, and empathy to treat you as an individual and not just a patient, you know you’ve found the right surgeon for you and your future. If you are faced with the difficult prospect of a major surgery, it’s comforting to know that you are in the most experienced hands possible, and that the surgeon is a good fit. SMILING IS POWERFUL. It can instantly improve your mood, reduce
stress, and even retrain your brain to encourage positive-thinking patterns. Unfortunately, those who don’t like the way their teeth look try to hide their smile. The truth is that many beautiful smiles are the result of spectacular orthodontic work, not good genetics. Orthodontic treatment is a complex process that involves changes in jaw bones, facial bones, and soft tissue. Orthodontic treatment also helps reduce the development of tooth decay and gum diseases caused by overcrowded teeth, decreases problems with grinding teeth, and aligns protruding teeth or jaws. By choosing a good orthodontist, you can solve many issues at once. So how do you find the right one?
Start by asking for recommendations. Orthodontic work is so common that it is likely that several of your friends, family members, and co-workers have had it done. Ask them who they like and why. Your dentist is also a great reference point. and dentofacial orthopedics after graduating from dental school can be a member of the American Association of Orthodontists. For a doctor who goes the extra mile, check to see if they are board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics. Once you create a list of orthodontists in your area, schedule an initial appointment. Take this time to make sure their office is up-todate with the latest technology. For the best in equipment, look for a 3D scanner that makes electronic molds of teeth. If you are worried about radiation, look for an office that uses a digital x-ray and a cone beam x-ray machine. Digital x-rays use half the radiation of traditional film x-rays, while the cone beam is like the medical CAT scan except it exposes patients to much less radiation. During the consultation, make sure you ask questions about the scope, length, and cost of treatment. It is important to know how long the treatment plan will take and what type of post-treatment is necessary. Ask about the processes and tools they use that are specific to the procedures you’re planning to undergo, and get a sense of what will be required to achive the best result. Compare costs and payment plan options with other orthodontic practices. If you are not 100 percent satisfied with your initial consultation, it never hurts to get a second opinion. You will have the chance to compare pricing and treatment plans before making your final decision. If you go to the staff pages of local therapy center websites, you can see the names of the physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and other professional staff. A reputable
Look at the services offered and make sure they include a variety of hormone replacement therapies. Most will provide HRT for women and for men, but a few stick to one or the other. So it’s important to check that out before showing up at the front desk. You should also find out what type of therapy is offered—there are many different vehicles for therapy from tables to patches to creams to subcutaneous pellets. Next, it’s time to do a little leg work. Pop in and visit those that interest you the most. Even though you haven’t made an appointment, staff should welcome you and take time to answer your questions. Some questions you might ask include: What are the benefits of bioidentical hormone therapy for men and women? Do you offer prescriptive vitamin supplements to support wellness and nutrition? What types of tests will you require to determine what therapies I need? What does hormone replacement therapy typically cost? If the staff members answer your questions professionally and to your satisfaction, that’s a great sign. Also glance around the facility itself. Take home some brochures or any other materials they’re able to provide. One consideration still worth mentioning is location. Choose a treatment center that meets the other criteria, but is also convenient for you. Certain hormone replacement therapies may require more frequent check-in visits. You don’t want to have to drive more than necessary to get the help you need to live your best life.

The breadth of their general dermatology training includes seeing clinical patients of all ages from newborn through mature adulthood, reading skin pathology, performing surgery, and cosmetic training. Many dermatologists elect to spend an additional (10th) year to subspecialize in pediatric dermatology, skin cancer surgery, pathology, or cosmetic procedures. Their expertise encompasses medical, surgical, and cosmetic concerns as well as all age groups.

If you require dermatological expertise, first verify that the physician is board-certified in dermatology. The initials “FAAD” after their name means that they are a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. This designation means that the dermatologist has a license to practice medicine, has completed an approved internship and dermatology residency, and has passed the board exam. Second, verify whether you will see the dermatologist or a mid-level provider. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are mid-level providers and they are not board-certified in dermatology. They do not have the depth of expertise that a dermatologist does, though they often can handle simple issues very effectively. Third, if you have a rare condition or a specific concern, ask the scheduler if the dermatologist’s practice can address that concern when you are scheduling the appointment, Once you meet your dermatologist, ask yourself whether they communicated well with you and understood your concerns. As with any relationship, if it is not the right fit, look for one whose style matches your needs. Dermatologists are the experts when it comes to conditions involving the skin, nails, and hair. By following the steps above to assess potential doctors, you will find a physician that is able to address your needs in the manner that makes you feel well-cared for.

THE SWELTERING DAYS OF SUMMER ARE A DISTANT MEMORY, and especially in
our neck of the woods it’s getting to be time to think about comfortable outdoor living. The pool may be closed, but the grills are about to heat up, and patio seating and deck dining becomes more appealing. Nothing is quite as inviting as a sweet patio set up or a freshly built deck to accommodate outdoor entertainment or even late night star gazing. Being outdoors is not only fun, it’s necessary for our health. The EPA says indoor air pollutants can be 2 to 5 times greater than outdoor pollutants and in some case, exponentially worse!
Many of us would probably like to spend more time outside, but we just haven’t gotten around to updating or transforming that muddy backyard or rickety old deck. Say you’re now ready to get started on an outdoor project and know you can’t handle it yourself—where do you start? How do you choose the right patio and deck company to fit your needs? Outdoor living spaces have grown in popularity over the years, and so have the number of companies offering to create them. With so many professionals to choose from, it’s important to do thorough research. You might start with referrals from people you know, online reviews, or both. Look to local pros if possible, as you can often save money if they don’t have to travel a long distance. Select a handful of companies whose work you like (not every contractor will have the same vision) with a solid track record and

good reviews. From there, schedule them to come to your home, offer ideas, and give you an estimate. Most companies offer free estimates and it pays to comparison shop. Be prepared with ideas and pictures of outdoor spaces you like, as well as realistic expectations on cost. Consider what size deck or patio you desire, the levels, the materials you prefer, and any additional features you may want. Railings, lighting, and unique designs will add to the base cost. As the professional evaluates your space, ask for their opinion. Someone with extensive experience will have ideas you haven’t considered. If budget is your main concern, be upfront about it. Having a company bid for a fully loaded project when you have a limited and locked budget will be a waste of time for both of you. Ask questions during the estimate. How many decks and patios have you built? May I see photos of your previous work? Who pulls the permits and marks the utility lines? What kinds of materials do you have available and where do they come from? What kind of insurance do you carry? What is the work and payment schedule? You may have more questions but these are a good place to start. If you have done your homework and are fully engaged with the contractor during the estimate, you are far more likely to acquire the finished result you envisioned.

CPAs are specifically qualified in tax preparation and accounting, undergoing extra education and passing a specific certification test as well as yearly training to maintain licensing. As a result, CPAs can represent clients before the IRS if necessary. Plus, CPAs can do more than just your taxes. With the help of the right CPA, your business could enjoy growth opportunities you may not have considered. Improving cash flow, guidance in financial planning, and cutting unnecessary costs could help profoundly improve your business.
What services are you looking for? What do you need? Not every firm or individual provides the same service packages, so you need to know your needs. Seek recommendations from other business owners, particularly those in your industry, for CPAs. Look for CPAs who specialize in your industry or the areas you want to focus on in your financial goals. As you interview possible candidates, ask for references. Although they will likely refer you to their happiest clients, you can get an idea of how they work with clients. Here are just some example questions you could ask references: How often do you receive reports? Does the CPA respond to your contact in a timely manner? Does the firm contact you about new opportunities or updates to tax laws that affect you? Of course, you can’t forget the bottom line. How much will the services cost? Before you hire anyone, look around and compare rates— whether hourly or fee-based. Perhaps you will find that a small company meets your needs for a more affordable rate. However, mid-sized to large firms usually offer more extensive opportunities for a higher rate. Either way, ensure you’re that whoever you pick will provide the resources you’re looking for. Make sure you interview multiple CPA candidates before hiring. With your business at stake, you want to make the right choice.

YOU MAY HAVE GROWN UP SEEING THE SAME FAMILY DENTIST as your parents—
and there’s nothing wrong with that! But there are many good reasons to take your child to a professional who specializes in pediatric dentistry. Pediatric dentists attend an additional two years of residency training to learn to care for the specific oral needs of babies, kids, and teens, including those with special needs. They are specially trained to address problems particular to children, such as dental developmental difficulties and root canals on adult teeth that have not fully formed. And their offices are usually kid-friendly, kid-sized, and fun.
Like many of the choices you make for your child, your first and best resource when selecting one can be other parents. Ask around at your child’s school or preschool, play group, or story time at the library. You’ll likely notice two or three names coming up again and again. If you have dental insurance, check to see which of these are covered. You might also ask your pediatrician for recommendations or look for candidates on The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry website. The AAPD recommends taking your child to see a dentist as soon as their first teeth appear. This visit is usually just a time for the dentist to take a “look-see,” and for your child to meet the dentist, see the office, and get used to the idea of someone looking in their mouth. That makes it an excellent time to test drive a pediatric dentist or two. The person you ultimately choose should set the stage

for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums and positive association with visiting the dentist. That first appointment should be relaxed with no freaking out, screaming, or cajoling. If there is though, observe how the doctor and office staff react and whether they can defuse the situation. The doctor should ask you questions about your child’s dental habits, such as thumb sucking, teeth grinding, or pacifier use, about your pregnancy, and about the dental care your child is receiving or has received until now. They should explain anything they’re going to do to your child before they do it. Ask how the doctor will handle after-hour emergencies. Will there be a dentist on-call at nights? On weekends? You should feel comfortable asking any and all questions. The dentist and staff should be friendly and welcoming. The office should be cheerful and kid-friendly with colorful paint, hands-on toys in the waiting room, and touches that make the experience fun. And dental instruments should be appropriately sized for your child’s mouth. You want a pediatric dentist who places an emphasis on parent/child education, talking to you about things such as how your child’s diet affects their teeth, and how best to care for baby teeth. If your child is old enough, they should be given a tutorial on the proper way to brush and floss. If your child leaves the appointment looking forward to their next visit, you’ve probably found a good fit! And if you’re looking forward to it, you’ve got a great one.

CHOOSING SOMEONE TO CARE FOR YOUR BELOVED PET in your absence is a
very important decision. Whether you plan to be gone for a couple of days or for an extended period of time, it’s important that you feel confident and your pet will be safe and comfortable with your choice. Picking the right place for pet boarding will help both you and your beloved pet sleep easy during your absence.
There are multiple options available, ranging from your local veterinary hospital, where you take your pet when they are sick, to boutiquestyle facilities such as very high-end pet resorts offering upscale rooms and personalized care. Other choices might be the neighborhood kid “We consider it the highest honor to be trusted to care for furry family members. I purposefully kept my facility smaller so that our team can truly know each guest staying with us. They know their names, their personalities, their preferences. Our guests and their humans become our family too!"
or the in-home sitter. Both of these have many inherent problems, some obvious and some not so obvious. However, the choice that the majority of pet owners make is a proper well established boarding kennel that has been around for a while. A real kennel is located on acreage, has plenty of green grass for dogs to run and play and has multiple different types of accommodations, both indoor and outdoor.

These kennels have millions of dollars invested in facilities and staff and can be depended on to be there. As with any important service, a good place to start is with personal recommendations from friends and family.

Once you compare your options and decide on a handful of potential caretakers, formulate your list of questions. Do they offer services to both cats and dogs, and are they housed separately? Do they board sick and contagious pets that could make your pet sick? Are additional services or amenities available such as grooming, bathing, and behavioral training? Is medical documentation required, including vaccinations? Is the provider or facility up to date on any necessary kennel licenses or certifications? Is there any way to check in on your pet while you are away, through a smartphone app for example? Or better, can you have a friend or relative visit? Remember to consider the characteristics of your individual pet. Is your pet energetic? If yes, then ensuring they will have plenty of opportunities to interact with other animals as well as get adequate exercise will be important for you to consider. Do you have an older pet? If so, then boarding at a veterinary facility with access to medical care might be an important factor. If bringing your pet with you is an option, you can also research service providers in the area where you will be traveling so you can visit them. These options may help to reduce the risk for stress-related complications such as food protest among others. Finally, remember to allocate some time to visit the facility in person. You should look for any boarding facility to maintain a clean, temperate, and spacious business with plenty of space for dogs to run and play. A friendly and engaged staff who cares about animals should be evident. No matter what you choose, remember that no amount of research will take the place of your gut instinct, so if you see red flags, heed them. In the end, choosing a pet provider you feel confident about can help ensure your pet enjoys their own “staycation” during your absence, and it will help to mitigate the feelings that come with leaving your furry friend behind.

PRESCHOOLS ARE CRITICALLY IMPORTANT for how well prepared your child
will be for school. Children build confidence in pre-school as they realize they can do things by themselves, such as going to the bathroom and taking off their shoes. They learn how to be students. They learn how to take turns and how to raise their hands. Children develop emotionally and socially. These institutions help kids develop their cognitive and language skills. Pre-schools get them introduced to pre-literacy and pre-math knowledge, with letters and numbers introduced in interesting ways.
You may know you want to get your child into pre-school, but it can be challenging to select the right one. Here are a few considerations to guide your decision-making process. Make sure the classroom is joyful. You do not want the classroom to be out of control, but it is key to recognize that kids will learn through play. The environment should not be one of tests and flashcards. You want to see teachers helping to promote deep thought through compelling questions and diverse activities. Verify that teachers forego punishment in favor of helping correct misbehavior. Children who are in preschool are learning how to communicate their frustrations and how to share. Techniques such as games and songs, establishment of appropriate conflict language, turn-taking times, and specific routines help kids learn self-regulation. Teachers should be strengthening kids' emotional and social skills. Determine if there is naptime. Naps are important for preschoolers. They should be shorter than two hours, at a scheduled daily time. Find out if a sheet, pillow, and nap mat will be sent home weekly or washed by the school. Inquire about the staff members' and teachers' experience and educational backgrounds. The credential that you want to see as a minimum in a teacher is Child Development Associate (CDA). Find out about the teachers’ experience and training related to a preschool curriculum and young children. You also want to see first aid and CPR certifications in the staff and teachers. The level of dedication and concern among the staff is probably a more important factor than the curriculurriculum. Consider your child and the type of environment that would be best suited for them. Some kids will perform better in more contemplative settings, while others will thrive in places that embrace more running and climbing. Think about the ways in which you are looking for development in your child during preschool. Preschool is an opportunity for a child to grow in various ways. By thinking over the above elements, you can choose the school that is an ideal fit for your and your child’s needs.

MORE THAN A THIRD OF ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES SUFFER FROM OBESITY,
according to the Centers for Disease Control. Another 32 percent, per the National Institutes of Health, are overweight. With statistics like these, it’s clear that our country has tipped the scales to a national health crisis. It puts people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and certain types of cancer, among other things. As the obesity rate has increased, so has the multi-billion-dollar diet industry, yet millions of Americans continue to struggle to lose weight and keep it off. Fortunately, bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, offers another option.
If you’ve tried dieting time and again without reaching or maintaining your goal, don’t give up. Instead, find out if weight loss surgery may be right for you. Start by researching weight “Once you’ve decided bariatric surgery is the next step in your weight loss journey, finding the right surgeon to help you reach your goal is essential. Other things to consider when selecting a potential surgeon include their experience and credentials. These days, bariatric surgeons are often fellowship-trained, although many excellent surgeons with a proven track record and extensive experience began their practice before these fellowships were generally available. Also evaluate his or her staff, because you will likely interface more with the staff than with the surgeon for ongoing support, questions, and general follow-up. Facility accreditation further helps ensure quality of care. The Metabolic Bariatric Surgery and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the gold standard in accreditation, recognizes facilities that implement defined standards of care, document their outcomes, and participate in regular rigorous reviews to evaluate their bariatric surgical programs. Last but not least, don’t overlook the ancillary and follow-up services provided by the program a bariatric surgeon is associated with. Weight loss surgery is only a tool—one piece of an intricate puzzle. During your weight loss journey, you will likely benefit from emotional support and encouragement, guidance with exercise and healthful living, and information about nutrition and making the right food choices. A comprehensive surgical weight loss program will offer these things and possibly more. Ultimately, your success depends on your commitment to making permanent lifestyle changes that support weight loss and maintenance. Choosing a surgeon and program that’s a good fit for you will help you achieve this, and your weight loss goals.

You will get access to a broader range of roofing materials than are available at home improvement stores. Look over samples of the contractor’s work. Any reputable roofer should have a portfolio. These samples will give you a sense of the expertise or focus certain contractors have. The level of sophistication within a portfolio will help to showcase breadth of skill. The best-case scenario is that you can get a few addresses and go look at the outcomes in person, possibly even talking to the homeowners. Watch out for scams, especially related to hail damage or immediately following a series of storms. Roofing scammers or “storm chasers” often attract people by leaving fliers on doorknobs or through door-to-door sales. Either way, the people involved will talk about how many people in the area do not know that their roofs were damaged but that insurance carriers are providing compensation. Generally there is not roof damage unless the hail diameter is quite large—over an inch in diameter—and it is usually not substantial unless they are at least golf-ball size. The BBB noted that damage from a hailstorm will be inconsistent across your roof, so some individuals will take advantage of that randomness and misrepresent your roof damage. Hiring a roofer can be tricky, so you need to make sure you are trusting someone with the necessary experience, credibility, and skill to perform the job. By talking with multiple contractors, knowing what you should expect from credible firms, and being aware of scams, you can increase your chance of satisfaction with the roofer you select.

Visit the gym at the time you’re most likely to use it. Check out the machines and other equipment to see if they have what you want. Is everything clean and well-maintained? Do they offer classes, one-on-one training, tracking systems, or other methods to encourage and support progress? Can they provide customized routines that fit your needs? For some, an external form of guidance is critical, so be sure you ask about any programs they might offer. Ask about emergency plans. This is especially important if you have some existing health situation. For example, if you had a cardiac event, is the gym prepared to handle it? Most gyms have staff trained in CPR, but in addition, you want a gym equipped with an automated external defibrillator (AED). This device can vastly improve your chances of surviving a sudden cardiac incident. Make sure the gym has one and several staff members trained to use it. Ask about billing and cancellation policies. The most common complaint about health clubs and gyms involves automatic billing after your cancellation. So check on that, and ask if the classes that are offered come with an additional charge. Finally, when you’ve found the gym that you think is right for you, ask for a trial membership. Most gyms will offer one at little or no cost, and this temporary membership gives you an opportunity to evaluate the staff, try out the equipment, and determine your comfort level while working out there. Once you’ve done your homework and found the right gym, be sure to make good use of it. After all, it’s an investment in your health and your future.

A LANDSCAPER
BY M I M I G R E E N W O O D K N I G H T
LUSH OR SKIMPY, VERDANT OR DREARY, YOUR LANDSCAPING OFFERS the first
impression of your home. If your yard doesn’t compliment your house— or your lifestyle—installing new landscaping or making improvements to existing features can be a major financial investment. But it can also increase your home’s value and your family’s outdoor enjoyment. Choosing a landscaping company to help make it happen can be challenging, especially if you don’t yet know what you want. But the right firm will know what plants, trees, and hardscaping are appropriate and how to help it all flourish for years to come.
Begin by considering your goal for your property. Most contractors specialize in certain areas, whether hardscape or plantscape, decking, patios, driveways, fences, retaining walls or lawns, Japanese gardens, edible gardens, and others. “When choosing a contractor, make sure you read their reviews online and find out whether they are licensed and/or certified for the work they will be doing. Ask about their timeline to complete the work and who will meet with you after to make sure it went as expected.”
Giuseppe Baldi, General Manager BALDI GARDENS
The American Society of Landscape Architects Firm Finder at ASLA.org can help you determine who in your area specializes in what you want. You might also ask friends and neighbors who they recommend, especially if they’ve done the type of project that interests you. Keep your eyes open for newly installed landscaping as you drive around town. Often, the landscape company will post a sign in the yard they have just completed advertising their phone number and website. Local nurseries may also recommend reputable contractors. When contacting potential landscapers, one of the first questions you’ll want to ask is

whether a firm is licensed and insured for the type of work that you’re requesting. Ask about their training, any certificates or degrees they hold, as well as their membership in professional landscape associations. Before you hire anyone, ask for a copy of their insurance binder and license. Contractors generally will meet with you at least once free of charge to discuss your project and many give free estimates. Try to find three or four contractors to come for an initial consultation to discuss your needs and explain their services. Ask them to bring a portfolio of photos of past landscape projects and prepare a list of questions in advance to ask each potential firm. Remember, contractors who’ve been in business for decades have experience and reputation behind them, while new contractors may have fresh ideas and may charge less. Find out the contractor’s experience level with the type of project you have in mind. The more specialized your project, the more important it will be. Ask for a final budget and timeline in writing (at least a good ballpark). Ask about permits for decks and fences, sheds, gazebos, and pools. Their familiarity with these details is a good sign of how experienced they are. Ask about warranties for defects in craftsmanship and improper installation of decks, patios, and irrigation systems. Ask whether they offer continuing maintenance of your landscaping (although this isn’t a deal breaker). And call a few former clients. Ultimately, you’re looking for the lowestpriced, best-qualified candidate with solid references, professional integrity, and an artistic eye. Good luck!

IF YOU’VE EVER SAT FOR HOURS IN A HOSPITAL’S EMERGENCY ROOM surrounded
by far sicker or more badly injured people, you probably felt equal parts thankful that your “emergency” wasn’t dire enough to move you to the top of the list and frustrated when you realize you’d be there for a while. That scenario led to the creation of urgent care facilities. Urgent cares are same-day clinics that can handle a variety of conditions that aren’t life-threatening but require immediate attention. Urgent care is a great option for times when your doctor’s office is closed or can’t accommodate you with a timely appointment.
The first thing to decide is whether your emergency is a candidate for urgent care or whether it warrants a trip to the emergency room. Most urgent care clinics are well equipped to handle conditions such as a fever with“When choosing an urgent care facility, find out how long it’s been in operation and how long the providers have been practicing there. Longevity means they are familiar with you and your family. Also, a facility that has two providers per shift allows them to spend more time with you and offers the patients more choices, such as a male or female provider.”

If you’re unsure whether your condition is life-threatening or not, it’s always a good idea to opt for an emergency facility and let the experts be the judge. The moment you need care isn’t necessarily the best time to shop for an urgent care facility. It’s far better to evaluate the options

suffering from them won’t feel like traveling all over the city looking for treatment. Look online for facilities in your area and visit their websites to see what level of care they provide, what their hours of operation are, and what insurance plans they accept. Some facilities offer 24/7 care. Some don’t. If you don’t have insurance or they don’t take yours but you decide to go there anyway, most facilities will accept your credit card or check and may even allow you to arrange a payment plan over time. But that’s another decision it’s best to make ahead of time. If you live in an urban or suburban area, you probably have several options close to you. And if your medical condition isn’t something they treat, any of them should be able to stabilize you then help you get transported to an emergency facility. If you have kids, look for a facility with a doctor who’s qualified to offer pediatric care and with a kid-friendly bedside manner. Ask other parents about their experiences. Also, see what services they offer in addition to traditional urgent care. Many centers offer preventive care such as sports physicals and immunizations or can assist you in managing chronic problems such as diabetes, saving you all that time waiting in the doctor or hospital waiting rooms. Do keep in mind that if you have a true life-threating emergency, it’s always a good idea to head to an emergency room or call an ambulance to get you there as quickly as possible.

Consider doing some personal research. There are several online resources that offer listings of attorneys by state and specialty, and many of them are used by attorneys themselves when looking for legal talent. You can also find lawyer and law firm ratings based on peer reviews, and these may be helpful in choosing between two equally qualified candidates. SOONER OR LATER, most of us will need the assistance of a good attorney
to help with some kind of issue. It might be to draw up a will or create a trust, purchase property, or renegotiate a loan. Perhaps you’re going through a divorce or being sued, or you’re thinking of bringing a legal suit. In a worst case scenario, you might need a defense attorney. With about 1.1 million practicing attorneys in the United States, you have no shortage of choices. Here are a few suggestions for choosing an attorney that best meets your legal needs.
You can possibly start with your employer, as some companies have an employee assistance program (EAP). This could be a way of getting a basic legal document such as a will or power of attorney done at a reasonable cost. Through an EAP you might also be able to get a free initial consultation to help you make determinations such as if declaring bankruptcy might make sense or if you have a valid legal claim to file a lawsuit before looking for a more specialized attorney to help you handle such matters. Whether or not your employer has an EAP, you should consider asking family members, friends, and work associates for recommendations. Lawyers that they know can be useful in your search even if they specialize in another area of legal practice. Lawyers tend to know other lawyers, and most importantly those that are reputable.

Once a consultation is arranged, prepare a list of questions in advance. These could include the following. “Who will I be working with?” You don’t want to settle on an attorney only to find they’re passing your case off to a junior associate or a paralegal. “How will you be paid?” Are they charging a flat fee, an hourly rate, or working on a contingency basis? It’s essential to how how payment and fees will work up front. “How much experience do you have dealing with situations like mine?” And don’t be shy about asking about credentials. If you’re creating a trust, for example, you might want an attorney who has earned the designation of AEP (Accredited Estate Planner). “Do you have questions for me?” A good attorney should be focused on you and your needs and should have some questions of their own to ask you. It’s also a good idea to check the Texas Bar website to see if any of your prospects have been subject to any disciplinary action. If you notice something, allow your attorney a chance to explain. Finally, consider the personal chemistry you have with the lawyer. Whatever their experience or credentials, you want to work with someone you like and trust, so don’t overlook the importance of personality and personal chemistry.

A BANK OR FINANCIAL INSTITUTION
BY M I M I G R E E N W O O D K N I G H T
Credit unions, as not-for-profit memberowned institutions, tend to have higher annual percentage yield (APY) on deposit accounts and lower fees than traditional banks. Online-only banks often have even better terms because they don’t have the cost of maintaining brick and mortar locations. EACH OF US REACHES A POINT IN LIFE when we need to make an informed
choice and select a bank or financial institution to house our money. Whether you’re new to banking or feel like you need to make a change, no single banking option is right for everyone. And the choices are seemingly endless when it comes to products, accounts, and services available. Technology has made banking even more complex but also more convenient and productive. Choosing the institution that’s right for you begins with considering your bank usage, financial situation, and the services and features that matter to you.
Begin your bank search by considering whether you want all your accounts—checking, savings, money market, certificates of deposit, credit cards, loans, and other products—at a single institution or whether you’d like to spread out your money to get the best deal on rates and fees. If you prefer a one-stop shop, a large national bank might be your best bet, since they offer a fuller suite of accounts. Next, you should think about the cost of banking. Since some institutions can charge fees for monthly maintenance, ATM use, overdrafts, transferring money between accounts, and sending paper statements, fees can really add up if you’re not careful. Investigate fees, interest rates on credit cards and loans, and the rates you’d earn on deposit accounts at any institutions you’re considering. Most banks and credit unions publish them right on their websites.

Consider your lifestyle and your preferences in conducting your financial business. Do you value the ability to visit a physical branch and talk face-to-face with a banker or account manager? If your transactions are strictly digital and you rarely use cash, you might consider an online or mobile-only bank. If you travel a lot, investigate the number and location of ATMs and branches of institutions you’re considering. If you send money internationally or make online purchases from stores based in other countries, ask about exchange rates and foreign transaction fees. National banks have more branches and ATMs across the country. Credit unions that are part of networks such as Allpoint and Star should have the greatest ATM coverage. If you don’t want to step into a branch, you’ll need a bank with a mobile app that offers remote check deposits and the ability to transfer money easily. Consider electronic features you may want such as budgeting tools, automated savings plans, or security measures. If you don’t carry checks, make sure your bank is able to send out checks on your behalf if you request them. Once you decide what matters most to you and examine your available options, browse financial institutions’ websites, visit a branch or two, and ask family or friends for recommendations. Now you’re ready to select a financial institution that allows you to bank the way you want to bank.

KEEPING YOUR SMILE IN TOP CONDITION is important for your health as well
as from a personal perspective. An attractive, well-maintained smile can enhance your life and even boost your career, but there’s more to a beautiful smile than aesthetics alone. There’s evidence that our oral health is linked to our overall health. Untreated or undertreated gum disease can be a cause and effect of systemic inflammation and chronic disease. Plus, by examining oral tissues, a vigilant general dentist may detect signs immune disorders, heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers during a routine dental exam.
Start your search for a general dentist with the basics and must-haves, such as location. It’s easier to keep appointments if your dentist is conveniently close to where you live or work. Check the office hours, too. If you require “Look for someone who has been practicing for many years with plenty of continued education. The office needs to be inviting and comfortable. extended weekday or Saturday appointment options, seek a dentist who can meet your scheduling needs. Also consider the scope of specialized services offered and the dentist’s continuing education and credentials. Some general dentists strive to perform as many services as possible themselves. Specialty services include root canals, dental implant placement, periodontal therapy, and orthodontics, to name a few. Others bring dental specialists into the office when needed, practice in a group that includes specialists, or they refer patients to specialists with whom they have developed a close relationship and may co-manage complex cases. Once you’ve identified a few dentists, stop by the office before making your final choice. Does the office appear clean, neat, and orderly? Is the staff helpful and friendly? Is the reception area filled with patients griping about a long wait, or do they seem happy and content to be there? Does the front office staff appear courteous and helpful? Last but not least, make note of things during your first appointment. How you were greeted? Was information provided about fees and payment plans before scheduling treatment? Inside the treatment room, note how your dentist, the hygienist, and other staff members treat you. Are they pleasant, attentive, communicative, and compassionate? Are diagnoses and treatment recommendations and options well-explained? Did they review steps you can take to help you maintain and improve your dental health? If the dentist you initially select doesn’t work out, keep looking. A general dentist who makes you feel comfortable and treats you and your family with care and attention is worth searching for.

AN ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY
YOU MIGHT STILL HAVE A FEW YEARS—OR MORE THAN A FEW—to go before you
reach retirement age. But, as you may very well realize, it takes a little preparation to ensure you’re able to live your best life during your second act. One crucial factor in preparing for this time involves choosing a retirement community. It’s important to know that unlike in decades past, there are now several types of communities to choose from as you decide where you’ll spend those senior years. Whether you have mobility or health issues that require you to seek out a place offering assisted living services or simply want to spend more time around active people who are closer to your age, there’s sure to be somewhere that’s a good fit for you.
How do you choose a senior living community that’s right for you? Before setting out on the task of researching your choices, you must first decide what things you find most important. A well-run retirement community provides a pathway that leads from the "Assisted Living properties should always offer their residents a wide variety of options and choices in their pursuit of quality accommodations and services. ability, overall health, and other age-related concerns. Schedule an appointment with the property’s sales representative to discuss how they handle varying levels of care. Some seniors just want a place where they don’t have to mow the lawn and keep up with everyday home maintenance. Others hope to engage in social activities and hobbies with people their own age. Whatever you envision for your life as you approach retirement, discuss it with the sales representative. Active adult communities usually allow people to buy their homes starting at age 55. These communities sometimes don’t provide much in the way of elder care for later on down the road. That’s important to know because you’d either have to sell your place and move to a community with an appropriate level of care, or pay for private in-home assistance. What they do offer are numerous amenities for those still leading very active lives, including aquatic facilities, salons and spas, dining services, housekeeping, exterior home maintenance, social activities, fitness classes, and spiritual growth sessions. Regardless of the amenities a retirement community may offer, consider asking yourself some key questions when conducting your evaluation. What is my first impression? Are the public areas appealing and well-maintained? Do they offer enough group social and recreational activities? Do the dining facilities offer foods that I enjoy and that are healthy? Are the personal and healthcare services in line with my needs? You deserve to live the retirement life you’ve dreamt of. A little preparation can make it happen.

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM CHRONIC PAIN in Texas and through-
out the United States is incredible—100 million nationwide. That means 1 in 3 Americans currently have this condition. Unfortunately, pain often goes untreated. Neglecting to relieve it can poorly impact the immune system. If the pain results from tissue damage, it will heal more slowly if the pain is not mitigated. Pain that is unaddressed can also make it more difficult for us to cope with stress, chemotherapy, and surgery. As with any healthcare field, the quality of care you receive will differ from one pain management provider to the next. However, knowing how to evaluate clinics will lead you to a team you can trust.
Your doctor should have received specialized training in pain management and be board-certified in the field. Check if the clinic’s doctors are members of the Texas Pain Society, American Pain Society, or American “Your pain doctor should take time to hear your story, evaluate you completely, review with you all the available imaging, and explain your diagnosis and the plan in words that you understand. Chronic Pain Association. Another straightforward way to find a high-quality clinic is by getting a referral from your general physician or specialist. You may also be able to get a strong recommendation from a hospital or general health clinic in your area. A pain support group could provide a referral as well, as could friends or family. Check online reviews. Ask the clinic if you can speak with current or past patients about the

If a clinic runs a pain support group, that is a good sign. These groups can be helpful for referrals, but also for emotional support, since that part of pain is so significant. In fact, pain experts believe so strongly about the emotional aspect that the definition of pain from the International Association for the Study of Pain calls it “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience.” Find out about the therapies that are offered through the clinic, which may be diverse, given that today’s standard approach to pain management is multidisciplinary—combining various medical, conventional, and alternative specialties into the approach. Clinics that are primarily focused on narcotic pain relief should receive extra attention, since these medications have many side-effects and can lead to addiction. Pharmaceutical drugs can also have negative interactions with other medications you may already be taking. If your doctor does prescribe medication, it should be in combination with physical therapy, rehabilitation, massage therapy, chiropractic, mental healthcare, and/or other modalities. The selection of a chronic pain clinic continues through the initial appointment. You should feel comfortable with the doctor. They should not be focused on the pain but on you. Understand the treatment plan. The doctors should be able to customize a plan that is directed toward meeting your objectives. They should communicate with you throughout the process and track your recovery closely. Chronic pain is a common health issue, and addressing it is critical to immediate and longterm health. Selecting the right pain management center is challenging, but step-by-step assessment upfront can lead you to a healthcare relationship you can trust.

Patients today partner with their caregivers to create healthy lifestyle habits to ward off the signs of aging and keep them at optimum health—proactively. Today’s wellness care providers spend more time getting to know their patients, their health history, lifestyle habits, and preferences, and educating them about savvy nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle choices they can make to stay young and feel great—for a lifetime.
But how do you go a b out f i nd i n g a forward-thinking, proactive wellness care practice who’ll place you in the driver’s seat of your own best health? Begin by asking friends and family whose opinion you value. How about that sister-in-law who always looks amazing and whose kids are the picture of health or the friend who holds down a full-time job while heading up charity committees—and training for a 5K? I’m betting they know the name of a great anti-aging wellness center. You can also ask medical professionals you trust, such as your OB-GYN or dentist who they recommend in your area. And of course, you can peruse the internet. Once you have a short list of providers who place an emphasis on proactive wellness and anti-aging care, read some online reviews. Now visit their websites. How are these centers different from the outdated sick care model? What do they offer by way of patient education and empowerment? You want a wellness center that respects you as the ultimate authority on your own health. You don’t want someone to dictate care but to work with you in a symbiotic relationship, someone who offers concierge medical care, so you get what you want, when you want it. Look for an anti-aging wellness center that emphasizes non-invasive treatment, working with your body’s natural systems, not against them, someone who treats patients as a whole—physically, emotionally, spiritually, nutritionally, environmentally, and socially— and considers how the different systems of the body relate to one another. You want someone who searches out and treats the root cause of any health issues, who considers pharmaceuticals as a last resort, only after all conservative treatment options have been exhausted. Before you visit with wellness centers, consider your wellness goals. Are you looking to stabilize your hormone levels? Boost your immune system? Drop a few pounds? Are you interested in medically supervised aesthetic services? Now schedule some initial consultations. You’ll know a lot by how much time they allocate to get to know you and conduct a thorough examination. You shouldn’t feel rushed or “talked down to” but like your opinion and preferences are as important as theirs. Once you find the wellness center you can trust, you’re ready to embark on your own proactive journey to lifetime wellness.

The benefits of using an OB/GYN include the availability of high level services which offer peace of mind, and often life-saving procedures when called for. OB/GYNs can often provide services such as cesarean birth operations, genetic testing, ultrasound, and other medical technologies. Additionally, their special training in placenta previa, preeclampsia, and other complications can help to manage those conditions with success. Anyone can find a high-quality OB/GYN to meet their needs by going through a conscientious series of steps.
First and foremost, ask for referrals. You can talk to your friends or loved ones for their recommendations or information on their positive experiences with a particular OB/GYN. Online peer reviews and patient reviews can also be revealing. You may get a referral list from your primary care physician or insurance provider. Once you find a couple of top candidates, call and check about getting an initial consultation so you can meet and get a feel for them and their practice. Look for specialty focus. You should seek niche focus if you are facing a high-risk pregnancy. You want an OB/GYN who has experience with your specific concern or issue if you have previously experienced pregnancy complications or if you have a condition that increases your overall risk level. the proper medical knowledge and specialized training. Verify their board certification. You also want to be certain that there are not disciplinary actions or malpractice claims against them. Look up their license information with the Texas Medical Board. Another marker of credibility is membership in a professional organization, such as the Texas Medical Association. Make sure that the hospital where your OB/GYN practices is high-quality. You want the hospital to have a great rating, because that translates to a better survival rate and lower risk of complications. The location of the hospital is another factor worth considering. You want to be certain that receiving care remains manageable, especially if you end up having to schedule unexpected appointments. Consider your insurance coverage. While you want to focus as much as you can on quality, you will also need to ensure your insurance policy covers the doctor. You want to know what you will have to pay, as certain services— such as genetic testing—may require a significant contribution. Check which hospitals and OB/GYN doctors are in your network to control your costs. While finding the right OB/GYN is crucial, as a standard rule, it can be a good idea to stay in-network so your bills don’t balloon due to the unexpected. There are various reasons that women choose to seek pregnancy care from an obstetrician/ gynecologist. By carefully choosing your OB/GYN, you can verify that you will get the care you need in a setting that is both credible and comfortable.

too late and your gum recession has gone too far? Fortunately, modern dentistry offers several solutions.
GUM GRAFTING SURGERY Traditional gum grafting surgery involves tissues being cut and stitched to cover exposed roots. This may include taking tissue from the palate to graft onto existing gum tissue, or it may involve cutting the gums, stretching them to cover roots, and then suturing them together.
CHAO PINHOLE GUM REJUVENATION
HOLD On R E S TO R AT I V E T R E AT M E N T S F O R YO U R G U M S C A N H E L P YO U R T E E T H S TAY H E A LT H Y A N D RO OT E D I N P L AC E BY AN N E T TE BROOKS
um recession happens to people of all ages. Most of us aren’t aware of it right away because gum loss usually occurs gradually over time. Symptoms include but are not limited to tooth sensitivity, pain at the gum line, exposed roots, and swollen gums.
G
This technique is considered to be less invasive, less painful, and requires less recovery time than traditional gum grafting. During the procedure, a small pinhole is made in the gums so they can be repositioned to cover exposed roots. Collagen is then injected into pinholes to ensure the gums remain as they have been positioned. Results are immediate.
LANAP PROCEDURE During this relatively quick, virtually painless, and minimally invasive procedure, a precision laser is used to eliminate bacterial pockets formed by periodontal disease, allowing gum tissues and even bone to regenerate. The LANAP protocol is the first and only protocol to receive FDA clearance for True Regeneration, which is re-growing new cementum, new periodontal ligament, and new alveolar bone. Patients can usually return to normal activities within 24 hours after treatment.
TISSUE REGENERATION
You can take proactive measures to help prevent gum loss, but once it occurs it’s impossible to naturally reverse the process on your own. Left untreated or undertreated, gum recession can cause a snowball effect. Bacterial build-up, for example, leads to inflammation and more recession, giving you that long in the tooth look, loose teeth, and even tooth loss.
Tissue regeneration uses a platelet concentrate gel applied to a collagen membrane as the graft instead of using tissue from the roof of the mouth. The graft is soaked in the patient’s platelets using blood drawn in the same visit. Placed over the receding tooth root, the graft is then surgically secured.
With regular dental check-ups, your dentist can determine whether you suffer from gum disease and/or receding gums. The goal is to treat your gum loss to keep it from worsening. But what if it’s
If you have or suspect you have gum loss, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away. Effectively treated, you can reduce the likelihood of further gum recession and keep your teeth from becoming loose and falling out.

the homework hassle H ow m u c h to h e l p a n d w h e n to b a c k o f f
By Mimi Greenwood Knight Kids today are busier than ever. Between sports, dance, music lessons, after-school clubs, and any number of other activities, it can be tempting to kick homework to the curb. But the National Education Association says homework still serves a purpose. “Research indicates that children who spend more time on regularly assigned, meaningful homework, on average, do better in school.”
The National Education Association offers these suggestions for helping your child with their homework—without helping too much.
Classroom teachers use homework to:
• Familiarize yourself with what regular homework will be assigned and when weekly tests are scheduled.
• help students understand and review the work that’s been covered in class • ascertain whether everyone understand a lesson
104
• Schedule a regular time for homework each day. • Provide a quiet, well-lit place to work where supplies are close at hand. • Turn off TV and other distractions.
• Direct them toward appropriate resources, but don’t do research for them.
• help students learn how to independently find and use more information on a subject
• Work on your own project nearby so they get the message that you’re there if they need you, but you have confidence they can do a good job themselves.
Homework also serves as a link between school and home, helping parents stay informed about what kids are studying. But how can we make sure our kids are getting all they should from the homework they do?
• Find out what resources are available to your child (such as a homework hotline, other classmates, and public libraries that offer help) and guide them in finding help when they need it.
That depends upon your child’s grade level, learning style, and study habits. Younger students usually need more homework help than older ones. Some kids will need to be called “back to task” more than others. The trick is to guide your child toward independence.
One of the most helpful things you can do is demonstrate to your children that you think homework is important. Be supportive and provide help only when they ask for it.

adventure | LIFE'S NOT A BEACH
LIFE’S (NOT) A Beach M Y I N L A N D E X P E R I E N C E I N C O S TA R I C A BY J ENNI FER SI MO NSO N
nce upon a time, I lived in a small beach town on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. While living as a beach bum was a great way to spend a year of my 20s, when planning a recent trip to the small Central American country I decided it’d be better to spend most of my trip inland.
O
Most tourists rush to the coasts as soon as they land in Costa Rica to join a yoga retreat, surf beginner-friendly waves, or drink too many Imperials (the country’s official beer), but in my opinion the center of the country is where it’s at. Sure, Costa Rican beaches are pretty, but in reality the Caribbean has bluer oceans, Florida has finer sand, and Hawaii has bigger waves. What makes Costa Rica stand out is its green spine, running through the heart of the country and giving life to lush rainforests, volcanic mountains, sprawling coffee plantations, and therapeutic thermal hot springs. The shining star of Costa Rica’s interior destinations is Volcano Arenal. The cone-shaped volcano rises up from the fertile landscape of Arenal Volcano National Park. Arenal is the most famous volcano in a country known for its volcanoes. Today it sits dormant, but less than ten years ago it was the most active volcano in the country, with an average of 41 eruptions a day. The small city of La Fortuna sits at the base of the volcano. Originally named El Burio, the story goes that it was renamed La Fortuna— the fortune—after being spared by the 1968 volcano eruption that destroyed other nearby towns. Though it was actually named for the fertile lands in which it’s located before the eruption, the story is still charming, as the eruption caused extensive damage and “fortunately” left this town untouched. La Fortuna is home to cheap hostels, dollar beer specials, and tour companies. During the height of my budget travel years, when I rarely spent more than $7 a night on accommodations, public buses and hitchhiking where my only means of transportation, and lunches more often than not consisted of peanut butter and saltine crackers, I passed through La Fortuna twice. Despite those one-time budgetary restrictions, my friends and I managed to shell out what for us was big money to buy passes to the nearby Tabacon hot springs. In addition to checking out a nearby waterfall and taking day hikes through the rainforest, locals assured us that the hot springs were not to be missed. We arrived just after sunset. The volcano was still erupting at the time. We watched red lava flow down the volcano as we soaked in the thermal waters of the springs. Just as we were about to order our second drink, a staff

member ushered us out, telling us that after 8 PM the springs were only for hotel guests. I remember thinking “one day, when I am really old, I will be able to afford to stay at a place like this.” Fast forward 16 years to the present, and I decided to keep that promise my younger self made and book three nights at the Tabacon Thermal Resort and Spa. The hotel has since been fully renovated into a fivestar resort and spa that sits on 900 acres of tropical rainforest. Five main springs pump thousands of gallons of hot water every minute through the hotel’s thermal pool system, which also happens to be Costa Rica’s largest network of naturally flowing hot springs. The volcano’s magma heats the mineral-rich water. Minerals such as silica, calcium, and lithium can be absorbed through the skin and are linked to health improvements such as stress relief and relaxation, improved circulation, joint mobility, and increased energy levels. A long soak in these healing waters turned out to be necessary, because on the first morning of my vacation I took a two hour horse ride through the Costa Rican mountainside. Upon hearing I was from Texas the guide said “Oh, you must know horses very well.” This was not entirely accurate. My horse was older with a slow gate, but every so often she would take off running to show everyone that she still had it. I get that, so I hung on for dear life and let her do her thing. That might have been a mistake because during the next three days my aching muscles reminded me that I too was no longer as young as I used to be.

Later that night, as my muscles began to stiffen, I found relief when a heavy downpour canceled a nighttime nature and wildlife walk across hanging bridges in the nearby jungle. While it would have been a cool experience to see sloths and tree frogs at night, going to bed early to be fully rested for a coffee and chocolate plantation tour the next day was appreciated. On my last day at the hot springs I booked the “Kapi Kapi,” an 80 minute spa service that included a wrap made with the resort’s craft beer, a local IPA. I have all but given up drinking beer since my backpacking days, so I was a little weary about the body treatment smelling of beer, but when the therapist lathered on the body gel all I could smell was hints of honey. Before drifting off to a mid-massage blissed-out slumber in the open-air jungle bungalow I remembered my younger self getting kicked out of the hot springs, promising myself that one day I’d return when I was “really old.” If this is what being really old is like, I could get used to it.
